There is one aspect of our own mentality for which it’s difficult as yet to foresee what type of explanation would even be relevant. I’m referring, of course, to consciousness. The point is that although I have no reason to believe that my consciousness is implemented by anything other than my brain, I remain convinced that there’s something impenetrably mysterious about the relationship between brains and thoughts. And you can understand, therefore, why it’s so hard to imagine, let alone tolerate, the idea that the death of the brain necessarily leads to the end of the personal self – and this, of course, is the “trump card” with which religion has consistently played.

Just an interesting tidbit. My friend asked me the other day how, in few words, I would sum up the Tea Party.

I replied: "A supposed grassroots movement that's really driven by rich and powerful people with the main goal making them richer and more powerful."

I loved that scene. It makes me think of the human anatomy class I had in college. Our professor was showing us a human brain in formaldehyde while he was playing off that same scene. He them passed out. Never stand over a beaker of formaldehyde for a length of time, that was our lesson for the day.

Goodnight all.

"Think, too, about why we sometimes remind ourselves that "life is short." It is an impetus to extend a gesture of affection to a loved one, to bury the hatchet in a pointless dispute, to use time productively rather than squander it. I would argue that nothing gives life more purpose than the realization that every moment of consciousness is a precious and fragile gift."

Note to Miller: prolifer religious people are not phenomenologists, for a reason. Or should I say, a rationale. The very concept of "reason" is anathema to a lot of them.

I posted this the page about fundamentalism and evolution. Want to show it here, as it is interesting:

Speaking of things in Holy Books, I found this on Cracked. Apparently, there is now some idea what happened (scientifically) to Sodom and Gomorrah

Scientists now think that "something" might have been a half-mile wide asteroid. Before it could land, it apparently morphed into a three-mile-wide fire ball before clipping a mountain range and exploding in a rain of fiery debris. But don't beat yourself up for not getting that from the Biblical account.

About 150 years ago, two seemingly unrelated discoveries were made in different parts of the world. First, a Cuneiform tablet known as "The Planisphere," which was a copy of a sky chart from June 29, 3123 BC. Among the stars it seems to depict a moving object, one so large that it could be seen from the ground.

Meanwhile, over in Austria, geologists discovered evidence of what they think was an asteroid impact site. They found signs of explosions and rock-melting, typically caused when an asteroid breaks apart before impact, raining hell down on everything below.
You can see where this is going. But the impact was in Austria, right? What does this have to do with Sodom and Gomorrah?
Well, According to the scientists, the mushroom cloud of the explosion would have reentered the Earth's atmosphere over the Mediterranean Sea, and would have flashed across the Middle East, leaving a trail of debris and superheated air in its wake. To quote the article, the heat "would be enough to ignite any flammable material -- including human hair and clothes. It is probable more people died under the plume than in the Alps due to the impact blast."

Via wheelerroad.org
So imagine you're a guy living in a city in the Middle East, thousands of years ago. Maybe you herd sheep. You know absolutely nothing of asteroids or meteors or comets. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, the air fills with smoke, ash and debris. And then the air gets hot -- not hot like a summer day, but hot like the oven you use to fire clay pots.
Then, all around you, screams. Everything that is flammable spontaneously combusts. You are now on fire.

It would be to your eyes nothing less than the fiery, vengeful judgment of God. Believers will say that's just what it was. Nonbelievers will say the tale of Sodom and Gomorrah is just the handed-down account of whatever refugees were lucky enough to escape the now-forgotten burning city -- and from witnesses who stood, horrified, and watched it happen from afar (and "saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace").
You can be damned well sure that no ancient Middle Eastern nomad would forget the time they saw an entire city on the horizon spontaneously burst into flame. That's the kind of story that gets told and retold for a few thousand years.

I think there is a lot that is interesting. Troy used to be a myth --the underground statues of some Chinese Warlord used to be myth. What we know they (most likely) are not are proof of supernatural intervention. More likely, clues to history, but not absolute fact.

A ballot measure to ban circumcision in San Francisco has taken a strange twist with the publication, by the measure’s sponsors, of a comic book in which an anti-circumcision superhero -– blond, buff and handsome -– battles evil Jewish characters who recall the stereotypical images of classic anti-Semitism.

"Foreskin Man" was written and created by Matthew Hess, one of the leaders behind the initiative to ban circumcision, the ritual cutting of foreskin on a baby's penis that, in the Jewish religion, is considered central to the covenant between the Jewish people and God. Opponents consider it painful and barbaric, akin to female circumcision rites in Africa that have attracted international condemnation.

Yeah, there's no anti-semitism here.

Oh wow.

WTF?

Wait, it get better.

I'm sorry but this is straight up nazi hate speech, the blond aryan superhero takes the child from the dark, gun toting, evil Jews.

re: #25 Slumbering Behemoth

all art is basically a form of propaganda, it's all just pushing ones' personality and views out into the world

Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position so as to benefit oneself.

And if the cause IS yourself, then that's art, right? With no community, art has no hold. if the community is racist, if it's not, if it's evil, if it's altruistic, doesn't matter, it's all the same mechanisms. Just the same people getting paid by exerting their will, waving their personalities around.

It's why I get tired of the blog-war politics thing, it's why i'd rather play guitar and draw than argue about Jim Hoft, or Pam Geller, or whichever dull cow-like pseduo-human who is the flavor of the week. it's a game. It's a game everyone agrees to play, Pam Geller isn't crazy, she's playing a confidence game. Glenn Beck isn't crazy, he's playing a confidence game. it's all just personalities and will and intent. Internet makes it easy. Made it easy for me!

I read a lot of B&W indies, but they were often too political for me, too angry, I loved Matt Howarth because he was the real deal, a creator interested in worldbuilding and music over politics. Politics of the 90's is so dated, I have this compilation of the Answer Me! zines ([Link: en.wikipedia.org...] it's important, but as art it has this achingly dated dusty 90's quality to it, it's just not relevant, besides the court case they won

Bachmann at the Eagle Forum Collegians Summit yesterday. After the small talk, she starts into the heart of her stump speech a little after the 2.00 mark. The beginning and end are nothing other than pure revanchism, about how the US was the "greatest force for good in the world" and how we're losing that position and have to get it back. Along with voodoo economics which she also preaches in the speech-ette, this will be the heart of her campaign - religiously laced fanaticism for supremecy:

Early corneal lenses in the 1950s and 1960s were relatively expensive and fragile, resulting in the development of a market for contact lens insurance. Replacement Lens Insurance, Inc. The contact lens thing sounds more like an "aging grandma story" than that of a serious politician. I think I may be fixating on that part due to my own ocular impairment.

re: #75 freetoken

To break down her story...

She worked baby sitting jobs, at fifty cents an hour. Likely not the wage given to college age students in her time, and not at all likely the kind of job given to college age students in her time.

She also claims she did this work, at that wage, for three years, to buy contact lenses.

She also claims that she spent half that wage, and saved the other half for said lenses, over that same time period.

She also claims that she was riding her bike when the wind blew a contact lens out of her eye, and she needed her mommy to help her find it.

Being extremely generous, in the tough financial times she grew up in, I'll pretend she baby-sat three nights a week, the average being four hours per night.

With 52 weeks in a year...

(52 * 3)*(4*0.5)/2 = 156

I highly doubt $156 could buy the contact lenses she describes in the era that she seems to be describing.

/Yes, I know. No need to point out how weird it is for me to fixate on this particular point. I have ocular issues. 'nuff said.

I got eyes prettier than most for a dude. But they've been hidden behind frames of plastic and glass since I was nine.

I don't mind fuckers making fun. I got over that in grade school. I do mind fuckers who assume I'm a genius about any subject they need help with, just because my eyes suck. But I only mind that a little.

But as I said, I have ocular issues. I can take all the jokes and stereotypes in stride, but I don't like fuckers reaching for my lenses or my eyeballs.

Just ask the dude who threw something at me that hit my frames. I chased him down, tossed furniture out of my way like a beast, and damn near chocked him out.

And I have never been one to resort violence. But... I have ocular issues.

Yes. And it's not so much holding onto them, but buying more. They give the lowest returns of all bonds, since they're short-term.

Or getting rid of them is smart if we default because they'd be worthless?

If we default, we probably won't default on the entirety of the debt, but those payments might not be made, or a portion of them. So they wouldn't be worthless, probably, but be less than what you bought them for.

Stolen Data Is Tracked to Hacking at Lockheed
New York Times 06/04/2011
Author: Christopher Drew

"Lockheed Martin said Friday that it had proof that hackers breached its network two weeks ago partly by using data stolen from a vendor that supplies coded security tokens to tens of millions of computer users.

Lockheed’s finding confirmed the fears of security experts about the safety of the SecurID tokens and heightened concerns that other companies or government agencies could be vulnerable to hacking attacks.

The tokens, which are used to protect remote access to computer networks, are sold by the RSA Security Division of the EMC Corporation. RSA officials said Friday that they accepted Lockheed’s findings and were working with customers to offset the risks through other measures.

RSA disclosed in March that hackers had stolen data that could compromise a company’s SecurID system in a broader attack, and the breach of Lockheed, the nation’s largest defense contractor, is the first time that is known to have occurred.

A rash of prominent breaches has brought new attention to an increase in the frequency and sophistication of computer hacking. Google said this week that it believed an effort to steal hundreds of Gmail passwords for accounts of prominent people, including senior American government officials, had originated in China.

The Pentagon, which has long been concerned about efforts by China and Russia to obtain military secrets, announced separately that it would soon view serious computer attacks from foreign nations as acts of war that could result in a military response."

I think there’s an important point in the comic value: The people who think they’re smart enough, and morally superior enough, to run everyone else’s lives are risible. They’re not smart enough, and they’re actually, overall, morally inferior — I mean, John Edwards, DSK, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Barney Frank, Tax Cheat Tim Geithner, just go down the list — and mocking them is inherently valuable. They pursue power, and they exercise power, as much for deference as anything else. Deny them that, and make it painful for them whenever possible. That’s my take.

An interesting thought has been running in circles - like a three-year-old on a combined espresso and chocolate high - round my brain for a while now:

What if the real truth of things lies somewhere between Silenius ("He lives with the least worry who knows not his misfortune; but for humans, the best for them is not to be born at all, not to partake of nature’s excellence; not to be is best, for both sexes. This should our choice, if choice we have; and the next to this is, when we are born, to die as soon as we can.") and Solomon ("better a living dog than a dead lion")?

That is, what if it is a fact that to be born is itself a misfortune, but, for all that, to be alive is better than the alternative, but that, in any event, the end is unavoidable and permanent?

Maybe I need some more bourbon.

I mean, it's like, religion, you really can't take it seriously, because it seems so mythological, it seems so arbitrary...but, on the other hand, science is just pure empiricism, and by virtue of its method, it excludes metaphysics. I guess I wouldn't believe in anything any more if it weren't for my lucky astrology mood watch. - Steve Martin

Oh well,

True enough, but sometimes, one finds himself a bit short on funds - or his Bitter Half sick and tired of the drinking - in which case a fellow might just have to ferment his own in a discreet place, like, say, the trunk of an old Mercedes Diesel sedan, to pick a place just off the top of my head.

I was worried that Monday night's frog noise might start to piss off the neighbors but it seems to have only made the frogs more popular, especially with the boys in the neighborhood . I was the guest of honor last night at the hippie neighbor's new after dinner tradition called a frog party. They have desert on the porch and listen to the frogs until bedtime. This morning another little boy from down the road asked me (very politely) if I would give him one of the frogs as a pet.

Wisconsin Republicans continue their political suicide....
The Wisconsin legislature's war against microbreweries

Worried that perhaps microbrewers were operating in too free a market, legislative Republicans have proposed even more restrictions on the beer distribution business. Although the motion approved by JFC will now allow microbrewers to distribute their own beer to retailers, but it will forbid them from holding wholesalers licenses, which, as some articles have indicated, means microbrewers will not be able to band together to distribute beer.*

And what would Walker-era legislation be if it didn't offer more power to state government? The legislation also takes the power of licensing of wholesalers away from municipalities and puts them under the control of the state Department of Revenue.

Update on the Gmail hacks....
Gmail hacking was directed at White House

The computer phishing scam that Google says originated in China was directed at an unknown number of White House staff officials and set off the FBI inquiry that began this week, according to several administration officials.

It is unclear how many White House staff members — or those of other departments in the executive branch — might have been targeted, according to two officials with knowledge of the investigation. But the intended victims ranged across different functions in the White House, and were not limited to those working on national security, economic policy, or trade areas that would be of particular interest to the Chinese government.

The Wisconsin legislature's war against microbreweries

Yeah, but as the article noted this bill isn't so much a GOP thing as it is a Wisconsin Legislature thing. The state government there is protecting its big beer businesses, and has consistently under both Democrats and Republicans. If microbrewers want some consideration, they should consider forming a group to protect an incumbent state senator from recall. Make yourself vital for keeping a politician in office and you'll win some favor.

I was concerned that people might get cranky being woken up, oversleeping for work, or whatever. Everybody seems cool about it. It seems that there;s a very brief noisy period of a day or two at the end of the mating season when some frogs are in the mood and others aren't. I think they're don mating noise and back to just pleasant chirping. Very soothing.

Depending on how much territory you have to cover you could try a Deer Chaser....

I would suggest a large one (or two) with a fairly slow water flow. Timed to go off maybe every five minutes or so. The splash of the water and the thump of it resetting might keep the frogs nervous enough to keep quiet. I'm not sure it'll work but it's worth a try. Bamboo can be tricky to work with but you could build one out of PVC pipe in a couple hours.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is a die-hard fan of the HBO series "The Wire," a Dickensian drama about cops, drug gangs, crime and political and union corruption in Baltimore. Fervently praised by critics, "The Wire" attracted a large audience for five seasons before wrapping in 2008.

"I want to speak directly to (creators) Mr. (Ed) Burns and Mr. (David) Simon, do another season of 'The Wire.' ... I want another season, or a movie," Holder said, according to The Washington Examiner.

Well, the militia initially forming up in ranks to face the British did play right into the redcoats strength. Patriot militia, through the Revolutionary War, were seldom capable of facing British regulars in the open field (those few that could were the most experienced and best equipped, mostly those with previous service in the Continental Army). They had much better luck sniping at the British troop column as it marched back to Boston.

CNN on the Weiner story:

TRENDING: House Democratic leadership privately push Weiner

Washington (CNN) - Members of the House Democratic leadership have talked repeatedly to Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-New York, to try to get him to end what several Democrats call an unwelcome political distraction, a member of the party's leadership tells CNN.

"It's frustrating because we'll talk to him, and say clean it up, and then he goes out and does stuff," said the member of the House Democratic leadership, who declined to speak for the record about private discussions with Weiner.

"He's got to put the period at the end of the sentence," said the Democratic source, "it's painful."

On Thursday, Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, the number two Democrat in the House, was less blunt, but told CNN he had spoken to Weiner.

"I told him that he needs to handle this and he needed to give the facts accurately to the public," Hoyer said.

Weiner initially released two written statements saying he was the victim of a hacker and a prank, when a photograph of a man in bulging underwear was sent on his Twitter account.

He then refused to answer questions in a testy press conference about whether the photo was him, and why he hadn't asked law enforcement to investigate. The following day, in a series of interviews, he said he couldn't say with "certitude" if the photograph was of him.

"We'd like him to speak clearly to clear it up or quit talking about it if it's not going to solve anything," said the House Democratic leadership member who said he and others spoke to Weiner.

Do bear in mind the writer is Dana Bash, who is not a wingnut.

How’s that crow taste (see above).

Pattosensei on June 3, 2011 at 9:24 AM

“see above” is NOT what Sarah said. See below for what she REALLY said and the context in which she said it……

Transcript of Sarah’s comment on the midnight ride of Paul Revere….

“He who warned, uh, the, the British…..”

WTH? He didn’t warn the British. He was warning the patriots.

Okay, no big deal. Lets move on….

“…that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms….”

No, he was warning that the British were on the move. His main goal was to warn Adams and Hancock.

I guess all that matters is the perception, not the truth. Moving on….

“…by ringing those bells and um making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells….”

Revere’s ride was over before the warning shots and bells were happening.

The rest is simply the fluff she injects into all her comments. They are cool comments, but are flavorless because she uses them as filler.

The whole militia concept, that we could do without a standing Army and defend our nation simply with freemen grabbing a rifle off the wall and marching to the enemy, was a conspicuous failure. It got lots of men slaughtered in the Revolution, 1812, during various engagements of the early Indian Wars (those east of the Mississippi) and during the early part of the Civil War. The myth of the brave minutemen remains strong in certain quarters (see the "Appleseed" rife trainings) but it is myth nonetheless. The volunteers of the Civil War began the process of change from Militia to the modern National Guard because they were given at least some real training before being fed into the meat grinder. This was the model followed by the conscript armies of the US from WWI through Vietnam and, while decidely mixed, the results were still superior to those of the militias.

The only real impact the militia has anymore is that the 2nd Amendment was written around that mythos and there are a whole lot of people who thing they can defend themselves against the government with man portable arms or that the idea of a well regulated militia includes the carrying of concealed weapons (the founding fathers would have only expected criminals to do that).
