David Brin: Romney’s Etch-a-Sketch Moment

The big swerve
Opinion • Views: 40,356

A great Presidential debate rant by author David Brin: Romney’s Etch-a-Sketch Moment.

In fact, what we were witnessing during the last week was brilliant prep work, perfectly timed, for his Wednesday night veer and hard charge toward the center.  When Romney flat-out denied holding ANY of the beliefs or policies cited above!  Not only that, but he blamed the president for failure to unleash the CFPB on Wall Street with more vigor!

With panache you just had to admire, Romney moved from chutzpah…  claiming that - because of his three-day-old new tax policy he had never ruled out revenue increases or asking the rich to pay more or ever proposed a vast supply-side gift of trillions to the top 1%…

…all the way to flat-out lying. For example that ObamaCare is not directly modeled on the health care system he and the Democratic legislature enacted in his home state, when he was governor, down to the details of actual language in the bill.  As more and more elements of Obamacare have come into action, and proved publicly popular, those portions have come into Mitt’s category of “oh, well, I’ll keep THAT part, of course.”  And each time, he gets away with claiming that it is not a reversal.

Or his claim that Obama’s 90 billion dollars of aid to sustainable energy was fifty times the 3-4 billions per year of tax breaks given to the oil industry… when that 90 billion is mostly not expenditure but loan guarantees resulting in much lower costs, and is spread across many years.

I was reminded of an old Saturday Night Live sketch, in which a wife comes home to find her husband in bed with a bimbo and screams “what’s this?” To which he replies: “What’s what?  I don’t know what you’re talking about.”  He keeps up his denial while calmly getting dressed and the bimbo dresses and departs. Stonewalling her rage, he maintains the counterfactual with such puzzled calm and patronizing panache, while making coffee and suggesting that the wife is having blithering fantasies, that she winds up just sitting at the table with him, letting him change the subject to how her day went.

Seriously. Are we that stupid?  And is Obama such a klutz he will just stare at the lies, in pole-axed surprise?

I an still, shocked by how be claims that he cares more about how romenycare/obamacare care to be the what it does... What a soulless (as evidenced by how he cares more about how something came to be than what it does) suit.

"[Republicans] never ever mention their own record at governance over the United States, which lasted longer and was more fierce in control than the shorter spans of democratic rule. Can you imagine this final chutzpah? Demanding power, while frantically refusing to discuss how you used it before? Or the resulting outcomes?"

Gas-lighting is abuse. We don't have to take it.

Pro-Muslim Subway Ads to Hang Near Anti-Jihad Ads

The ad by Rabbis for Human Rights turns the language of the earlier ad, placed by a pro-Israel group, on its head. The original ad says, “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat jihad.” The ad by Rabbis for Human Rights says, “In the choice between love and hate, choose love. Help stop bigotry against our Muslim neighbors.”

“We wanted to make it clear that it is in response to the anti-Islam ad,” said Rabbi Jill Jacobs, executive director of Rabbis for Human Rights, whose members include rabbis from all streams of Judaism.
....
A Sojourners solicitation for donations says: “Hateful anti-Muslim ads only result in violence, hatred, and more fear. Everyone — regardless of race, religion, or creed — deserves to feel welcome & safe when riding public transit in the United States.”

Earlier in the day, some people including myself saw some figures on what he'd have to do to close the deficit with just new jobs.

If he gets his number of 12 million new jobs, those 12 million jobs would have to AVERAGE $433,333 a year.

If the jobs he creates have an average like the current jobs, he'd need to create something like 150 million new jobs.

Funny part is, from the ODS people I know (Obama derangement syndrome), the less their lives have actually been affected by him, the more they complain and think he's ruining everything. It's an amazing feat of cognitive dissonance, because I'll bet that in almost every case (and definitely in the ones I know), their life has probably been positively changed, even if in some small way, by the past 4 years (especially compared to the utter shitocalypse of the previous 8).

"Nobody love God like black folks. Black folks love us some God, we do boy. Jesus was black. If Jesus was black, you know the apostles was black, 'cause there were no 12 white men follow no brother. Unless they was the police and Jesus had a warrant, huh? They ain't have to describe Jesus to me for me to know he was black. Jesus first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding. - Booth renters required to switch booths every hour, on the hour
- A floor map that is missing parts with others misidentified.
- Feature sessions such as:

Smirking 101: How to get that perfect sly smile you've always wanted!

The Quest for Truth: How to see through the lies and embrace reality (special guest speaker: Donald Trump)

Work harder energy slaves! - The secret to getting the coal clean

On my walk tonight I saw a total of two yard signs for the coming election - one (that I couldn't read because the paper sign had twisted) for a proposition on the ballot, and the other for a local council race.

Two.

In a Presidential election year.

No sign for Romney, or Obama. Even the Congressional race - no signs. Heck, none even for the California Assembly races.

This is spookily quiet.

I've seen signs. Not as usual though.

One of the pistols has faux ivory grips, and another appears to have actual fossil ivory (derived from Wooly Mammoth tusks). No pearl handled 625-9's were seen. General Patton would be pleased, and he actually owned an ivory handled S&W.

Of course, Patton's S&W was a Model 27 .357 magnum, not a .45 Colt chambered weapon.

The most common Smith & Wesson pistols used by American soldiers in WWII were the WWI-era Model of 1917 Hand Ejector, chambered in .45 ACP with half-moon clips.

Analyzing Romney's Gish Gallop:

But that is the not the whole story—or, I would argue, the most important story. As some of us have noted, Romney’s debate performance was full of distortions, just like Ryan’s speech had been. The two most important were about two of the most important parts of Romney’s agenda.

The most obvious was Romney’s claim that “pre-existing conditions are covered under my plan.” No they aren't. Romney's plan would protect people with pre-existing conditions if, and only if, they already have insurance. Current law basically does that already. The question is what happens to people whose insurance lapses, because they lost a job or because they couldn’t afford premiums or because their carrier decided to hike rates. Romney’s plan would be all but useless to them. This was such an obvious lie that Romney’s own advisor, Eric Fehrnstrom, was forced to admit as much after the debate, while speaking with reporters in the spin room.

Romney also denied that he had endorsed a $5 trillion tax cut. But the proposal he unveiled last March, which included a 20 percent reduction in all marginal tax rates, would cost $5 trillion. Not even conservatives dispute that. Romney has said he would offset that tax cut by closing loopholes, but he’s never specified which ones. An independent study by the Tax Policy Center, a non-partisan research institute run by Brookings and the Urban Institute, says Romney’s promise is mathematically impossible, given his simultaneous promises not to raise taxes on the middle classes and not to let his tax plan inflate the deficit. Romney said six other studies back him up. That, too, is false. (Peter Coy of Bloomberg Businessweek and Dylan Matthews of the Washington Post have more details.)

More meaningless chatter: Here Raw Story is running an AFP story:

Astronomers find racing star that could prove Einstein was right

Yeah, "prove" Einstein was "right".

Wait... "right" about exactly what?

Wasn't Einstein already proven "right" about the photoelectric effect (for which he won his Nobel), Brownian motion, Special Relativity, and General Relativity?

The article contains:

US astronomers have found evidence of a star racing tightly around the monstrous black hole at the heart of our galaxy — the closest ever found near the matter-sucking body.

The scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles, said the discovery will help them test Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity and his predictions of how black holes warp space and time.

[...]

There are many problems with the second paragraph. First, General Relativity has been tested several ways and has held up. Secondly, Einstein really didn't "do" black holes much. Other scientists (like Chandrasekhar) used General Relativity to explore the consequences for stars.

Anyway, too much chatter. Our modern society has created a method for "businesses" to exist, even flourish, which do nothing but spread misinformation or just plain old lies.

He has to go out and remind everyone about the 47% comments even after Obama let him off the hook.....and then commit one of the biggest flip-flops of a campaign filled with them.

(facepalm) This campaign truly is incompetent. Do they really think everyone's going to forget about the comments now that he finally said they were "wrong"?

Anonymous Leader Lives with his Mother

A so-called terrorist hackers organization, calling itself Anonymous, had issued press releases claiming to launch violent protests in the European Union. The group contended it had sparked revolutionary uprisings in Orange County California last summer.

Nevertheless, the FBI launched a sting operation on Anonymous and discovered it was nothing more than a one-person organization led by a 31-year-old man who still lives with his mother. The FBI has yet to disclose whether the accused hacker was living in a basement.

Romney On 47 Percent: ‘I Said Something That’s Just Completely Wrong’

Mitt Romney's secretly taped comment about "47 percent" of Americans never made an appearance in last night's presidential debate. But on Sean Hannity's show on Fox tonight, Mitt Romney was asked what his response would have been had the debate moderator Jim Lehrer, or President Obama, confronted the candidate about the tape.

Here's his answer, portions of which likely would have been prepared ahead of the debate:

"Well, clearly in a campaign with hundreds if not thousands of question and answer sessions, now and then you're going to say something that doesn't come out right. In this case I said something that's just completely wrong. And I absolutely believe however that my life has shown that I care about the 100 percent and that has been demonstarted throughout my life. This whole campaign is about the 100 percent. When I become president it'll be about helping the 100 percent."

Bullshit.

Have to agree but I am amazed he's going on Hannity after gaining some momentum for the first time in months. Even more that Hannity would rehash the 47% comment which I am sure he wants to be completely forgotten and for more people to ask him about the debate. And I don't believe he feels bad about what he said for a second given that he lied his ass off last night.

Early in his political career, Mitt embraced progressive policies. Then he decided that it would be better to characterize himself as a moderate. In the current campaign for POTUS, Romney has been attempting to portray himself as a conservative, essentially disavowing most of his previous policy positions.
More recently, he has begun touting the virtues of RomneyCare in an effort to appeal to women. And finally, Mitt has decided to portray himself as a champion of the middle class, disavowing all of his former tax policy proposals and proclaiming his dedication to tax relief for struggling middle class families.

What will tomorrow bring?

MItt's tendency to flip-flop on his policy positions is somewhat akin to coherent superposition in the field of quantum mechanics. In much the same way that light is both a particle and a wave, Mitt Romney is both a moderate and a conservative, depending on the situation. It is not that he is one or the other; it is not that he is one and then the other. He is both at the same time.

However, what type of political ideology Romney displays at any given moment will depend on the audience's expectations -- what he thinks you want to see is what you'll get.

The Onion pointed out that his position on immigration tends to change the further he gets away from the border. Anyhow, very much agree about Mitt. The problem is he doesn't seem to know who he is. He tried selling himself as someone eager to work across the aisle last night but yet he acts super partisan in other quarters when he appears with the most partisan and divisive members of Congress like Steve King.

Greetings from a departure lounge at Heathrow.

I didn't get to see the debate (time zone issues), but I gather that Mitt tacked left. the only surprise about that is how long it took. I would have thought he'd do that 5 seconds aftr the convention.

That said, I am not sure that BHO can do much with it. Mitt has exhibited so little short-term memory that he's like the guy from Momento, having to write his true beliefs on his arms so he can remember them. I suspect that everyon is used to it by now, and he has become a political rorschacht test, allowing everyone to see in him whatever they need to see. I don't see a lot of upside here for BHO, and I think as a purely tactical move it is pretty damn smart of Mitt.

I'd actually be surprised if his campaign didn't ask Hannity to bring it up. I bet they actually intended to get that soundbite out during the debate, to an audience of 70m or whatever, when they expected Leher or Obama to raise it. Living in a swing state, it's hard to overstate how frequently I see that ad that consists simply of his words and the clinking of cutlery on dinner plates.

Haaretz: U.S. citizen opens fire at Eilat hotel, kills worker, is then shot dead by police

An Eilat hotel worker was killed on Friday morning by an unidentified suspect who stole a firearm from a security guard at the Leonardo Club Hotel in the southern city, and opened fire.

The shooter, an American citizen in his 20's, and also an employee of the hotel, was later killed by police during an exchange of gunfire.

Guests were instructed to remain in the rooms, following the original shooting. Shortly afterwards, a large police contingent arrived on the scene. They started investigating the incident and searched for the suspect.

Guests were allowed to leave their rooms after the shooter was killed by police.

...

According to police, the shooter was participating in a program called “Oranim,” and has been in Israel for roughly two months. Apparently, there was a conflict between the shooter and one of the other workers. According to other employees, he was in the process of being fired, and there was some kind of money-related conflict. It is not known why the specific employee was shot and killed.

Chevy dealer sells car for wrong price, apologizes after having buyer arrested
Dennis Ellmer, president of Priority Chevrolet, says he owes Sawyer an apology on behalf of the dealership, and had intended to do right by the buyer by letting him have the vehicle at the agreed-upon price. But Sawyer's lawyer says it's a little too late for saying, 'sorry.' The briefly-incarcerated owner has filed two lawsuits against the dealer, accusing the business of malicious prosecution, slander, defamation and abuse of process. All told, the suits seek a total of $2.2 million in damages, plus attorney fees.

Job growth remained tame in September, with the economy creating just 114,000 net new positions though the unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent.

...

Economists had been expecting 110,000 more jobs and the rate to rise to 8.2 percent. Last month saw 96,000 new jobs as the rate dropped from 8.3 percent in July.

Wall Street reacted positively to the report, with the stock market futures rising after the report.

261 lawhawk  Fri, Oct 5, 2012 6:56:48am

It's hardly the first time that someone has claimed that the unemployment data is being gamed to political advantage. This time, the beneficiary of the good news is President Obama, as the unemployment rate dropped to 7.8% and is below 8% for the first time in a couple of years.

The data itself has a bunch of mixed messages:

Employers added 114,000 jobs during the month, down from a revised 142,000 jobs in August, the Labor Department said Friday. But revisions to July and August mean the economy added 86,000 more jobs than originally reported in those months.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 7.8% in September, from 8.1% the prior month.

Most people (the ones who aren't political junkies or aren't watching blogs nearly as closely) will see that below 8% rate as a significant step in the right direction. That plus what people in many parts of the country are seeing as far as real estate and jobs. Some areas are still in bad shape - those that were hit hardest by the real estate collapse (I'm talking about FL, AZ, NV, CA, among others). Those states are dragging on the rest of the nation's figures.

The U3 rate (the 7.8%) shows improvement, but there are lagging indicators, including the U6 rate, which held steady at 14.7% from the prior month (but down from a year ago).

Here in the NYC metro area, real estate has rebounded and one of the indicators that things have stabilized and/or improved is that we're seeing more furniture stores opening (at all points on the price spectrum). During the real estate crash, those kinds of companies shuttered or reduced their hours or both. Now, they're opening up to take advantage of pent up demand and renewed optimism on housing.

You never can tell. Some of my former students have been models, but nothing much came of it for most. One girl was a print model in her native Pakistan and then became a singer/dancer/actress. Barbizon is very well known, and I'm sure they've got connections everywhere, so your daughter might have a bright future.

Modeling looks easy, but it ain't. My students convinced me of that. It's like acting -- lots of idle time standing or sitting around looking pretty until bossy people order you around to act on camera exactly the way they want you to. Again and again and again. Takes stamina, I think.

re: #261 lawhawk

It's hardly the first time that someone has claimed that the unemployment data is being gamed to political advantage. This time, the beneficiary of the good news is President Obama, as the unemployment rate dropped to 7.8% and is below 8% for the first time in a couple of years.

The data itself has a bunch of mixed messages:

In the Chicago metro area, real estate prices have stabilized, but we're still suffering a slow bleed of retail furniture stores. Prices haven't gone up yet where I live, though that's because I live near some newer buildings that opened as the crisis hit.

The 47% walkback is a funny thing. Instead of repudiating the comments immediately, he and his backers doubled down and made all kinds of claims. Now? He's gone and flip flopped, leaving his supporters in the lurch. They invested heavily in backing those comments, and now Mitt's turned on them.

Don't think for a moment that Mitt's walkback wont be used against him by the Obama campaign. It just goes to his truthiness quotient. Can we really trust Mitt on anything he's saying? The more we see of him, the more the answer seems to be no.

Theory:

People who hit retirement age in 2009 and 2010, taking note of how pathetic their IRA's and 401(k)'s looked... stayed on longer than they'd planned. Now the market is fully recovered. And people born in 1947 (*very* big birth year) are hitting 65 this year. Up to 1950 (now age 62), can take early retirement with only slightly reduced SS benefits.

Lots of retirements, equals lots of new hires, lots less unemployed even without lots of jobs added.

It's really sad that they have the muppets, too.

Big Bird will get by. Disney already owns the Muppets, so he's got Kermit in his corner. With the frog backing him, Disney will give Big Bird a job.

Don’t cry for Big Bird

Sesame Workshop executive vice president Sherrie Westin told CNN Thursday morning that the giant yellow creature will be just fine.

“The Sesame Workshop receives very, very little funding from PBS,” she said. “So we are able to raise our funding through philanthropic, through our licensed product, which goes back into the educational programming, through corporate underwriting and sponsorship. So quite frankly, you can debate whether or not there should be funding of public broadcasting. But when they always try to tout out Big Bird, and say we’re going to kill Big Bird – that is actually misleading, because Sesame Street will be here. … Big Bird lives on.”

Of course, that hasn’t stopped Sesame Street actors from asking Congress not to cut PBS funding.

Update: In an interview with the Post, Westin clarified that the ties between Sesame and PBS are strong. “Sesame Street been a partner with PBS for 43 years,” she said. “But more importantly, we’re dependent on them to distribute our education programing to all children in the United States.”

Have you looked at the Disney 'princesses', who are usually supposed to be teenage girls?

Not to mention that the message of most of their movies (Wulan and Brave excepted) is that you're not worthwhile as a woman unless you find a guy, and you're also not worthwhile unless you're actually a princess.

You should check out the old Shirley Temple movies. A lot of the references were pretty naughty and by today's standards would be considered very inappropriate.

I don't mind movies that raise the topic of or deal with sexuality. But Disney's depiction of sexuality is just weird. Really, it's the bizarre messages about the role of women and ethics that I find most creepy in Disney movies.

Now, I'm just talking about the animated stuff. Some of the classic Disney live-action movies are actually rad and subversive and cool, like The Absent Minded Professor. Flubber rules. The old one, obviously, not the new one.

In other election news...

Chavez ‘Likely’ to Lose, Supporting Bond Position, Barclays Says

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will “likely” lose this weekend’s election, Barclays Plc said after a poll yesterday showed opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski widened his lead.

Capriles’s lead grew to almost 5 percentage points in a poll by Consultores 21, with 51.8 percent of Venezuelans who said they’re sure to vote saying they’d vote for the opposition candidate, Saul Cabrera, vice president of the Caracas-based polling company, said yesterday. Chavez had the support of 47.2 percent. The poll of 1,546 people taken between Sept. 27 and Oct. 2 had a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.

“Taking into account the Consultores 21 poll and Mr. Capriles’ momentum, an opposition victory looks likely,” Barclays analysts Alejandro Arreaza and Alejandro Grisanti wrote in a research note today.

So there's a good chance Dinnerjacket will lose another friend. Heh. Maybe Chavez can get Sean Penn to come down and try to help him with a few speeches.

Not to mention that the message of most of their movies (Wulan and Brave excepted) is that you're not worthwhile as a woman unless you find a guy, and you're also not worthwhile unless you're actually a princess.

Usually when I see the sexist remark they exclaim how the princesses helplessly wait to be rescued. At least you side-stepped that one.

Pardon while I note that picking on Snow White for this (just to pick one) is to ignore the majority cultural standards of the time. So let's pick a breakpoint - say, 1972 - and list the Disney animated features since then while seeing if they support your hypothesis.

1973 Robin Hood. Yep, Maid Marion.
1977 Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Nope.
1977 The Rescuers. Nope.
1981 The Fox and the Hound. Nope.
1985 The Black Cauldron. Nope.
1986 The Great Mouse Detective. Nope.
1988 Oliver and Company. Nope.
1989 The Little Mermaid. Yes, Ariel.
1990 The Rescuers Down Under. No.
1991 Beauty and the Beast. Well, Belle wasn't a princess to begin, but it sorta supports your point.
1992 Aladdin. Yes, Jasmine.
1994 The Lion King. Yes, Nala.
1995 Pocahantas. Yes.
1996 The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Esmerelda isn't a princess. Needs her man? maybe.
1997 Hercules. Yes.
1998 Mulan. Already noted by you (but she got her man).
1999 Tarzan. Not really a princess, but she got her man.
2000 Fantasia 2000. Ummm.
2000 Dinosaur. Ummmm.
2000 The Emperor's New Groove. No.
2001 Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Sorta, but in this case I'd almost argue that Milo needed (and got) Kida.
2002 Lilo & Stitch. No.
2002 Treasure Planet. No.
2003 Brother Bear. No.
2004 Home on the Range. No.
2005 Chicken Little. No.
2007 Meet the Robinsons. No.
2008 Bolt. No.
2009 The Princess and the Frog. Yes.
2010 Tangled. Yes.
2011 Winnie the Pooh. No.

So... most of their movies? I'm seeing less than half, actually.

Mitt Romney Jobs Report Reaction: 'This Is Not What A Real Recovery Looks Like'

This is not what a real recovery looks like. We created fewer jobs in September than in August, and fewer jobs in August than in July, and we’ve lost over 600,000 manufacturing jobs since President Obama took office. If not for all the people who have simply dropped out of the labor force, the real unemployment rate would be closer to 11%. The results of President Obama's failed policies are staggering – 23 million Americans struggling for work, nearly one in six living in poverty and 47 million people dependent on food stamps to feed themselves and their families. The choice in this election is clear. Under President Obama, we’ll get another four years like the last four years. If I’m elected, we will have a real recovery with pro-growth policies that will create 12 million new jobs and rising incomes for everyone.

Yeah, fire in a major refinery.

Exxon's Baytown (Houston area) refinery had a fire this week. This is the largest refinery in the US. Since California is a net importer of gasoline distributors have to hit the spot market to cover demand. Spot market gasoline went nuts this week which is puzzling since the fire was in the hydrotreating unit and should not affect gasoline production and the rest of the refinery remains in operation.

Taliban threatens unpleasantness against Moonbat drone protesters....

Taliban warns Imran Khan of SWA rally

The Taliban warned Tehrik-e-Insaaf Pakistan not to go ahead with the rally or face consequences.
...
The one-page pamphlet, written in Urdu, was distributed in Tank Bazaar on Thursday night. It said, "We inform all and sundry with humble way that Imran Khan/TIP is taking a rally into South Waziristan with a slogan of anti-drone. (He has no sympathy with the tribesmen) actually it is a drama and he is the agent of Israel, US and Britain. On the politics of drone he is promoting the Jewish and agendas of Christianity (in Pakistan)."

The pamphlet further added, "We humbly request the people not to participate in this rally otherwise Imran Khan would be responsible if something unpleasant happens."

re: #438 Lidane

Taking notes was fine. They were given a pad and pen at the podium. Bringing your own notes to the podium? Not so much.

Either way, I don't much care about Mitt having a cheat sheet. I care that he lied his ass off.

fwiw, I think it was probably a handkerchief. Note that's not yet proven either - that's an alternate suggestion by several other people. I'm still waiting to see what Romney's team says about it and then to see if Obama's team agrees they approved the handkerchief.

However, my main is that I think the "no notes" rule is abysmally stupid. Yes, we expect our candidates to be knowledgeable. But I for one expect them to use resources, to rely on more than just their memory. I'm an information professional, it makes me extremely aware of how often the person who should know gets it wrong this time.

For that matter I think folks should be thinking about this now while the horse is still in the barn. See, we're approaching the point when it's not going to take a massive t-shaped antenna and obvious earbud to have datafeeds. Google glasses (and their competitors) are still observable, but what happens if (I argue 'when') contact lens Virtual Retinal Displays (VRD) get past the "it works in the lab" stage?

All of which assumes constant connection doesn't become the norm, at which point debating after stripping the connection will seem as relevant as stripping the clothes to ensure there are no blemishes.

Code Pink activists protest drone attacks

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- About 35 activists from the U.S.-based Code Pink anti-war group say they are in Pakistan to join in protests against U.S. drone strikes that target militants.

The protesters planned to contact people affected by the unmanned aircraft strikes and to draw attention to the situation, CNN reported Friday.

"We are here to say, on behalf of those Americans with a conscience, that we apologize to the people of Pakistan for the killing and suffering [because of the drone strikes]," Medea Benjamin, a Code Pink founder, said at a news conference Thursday in Islamabad.

I was thinking of the one in Richmond, CA, but the TX fire adds to the pain.

And let's assume arguendo that it was a bunch of note card (and I don't think it was). How does that change anything that Mitt actually said? He was up to his eyeballs in misstatements, lies, obfuscations, and clear changes in his positions from what he had said just days and weeks before the debate.

The claim that he was using notes is just a diversion by some who think that Mitt won by subversive means rather than on merits (or to explain away Obama's subpar performance).

471 Big Steve  Fri, Oct 5, 2012 9:30:18am

Friend has a theory on why Obama failed to respond forcefully in the debate. As the person making policy and being intimately associated with the details he may have felt comfortable not studying too hard for the debate. Kind of like a professor would not study for a test in his own class. So he may have not spent a lot of time studying candidate Romney's positions and not felt he could accurately deflect them without falling into a trap.
Years ago I was manager of a refinery that was being sold. I planned a town hall with the union operators to explain the situation that I was extremely familiar with in that I had participated in the sales discussions. During the town hall I got asked all sorts of absurd conspiracy theory type things that were totally off the wall. I was totally unprepared for this and I am sure it came across that way.

Some libs are not happy with Obama right now...

Liberals slam Obama on Social Security

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Thursday strongly criticized President Obama for not taking a more forceful stance on Social Security in the presidential campaign.

Sanders, founder of the Senate’s Defending Social Security Caucus and a leading voice on the issue in the Senate Democratic caucus, said he was deeply concerned by Obama’s effort to minimize differences between himself and Mitt Romney.

“It was very distressing. It was very distressing not only because it is extremely bad public policy and will cause serious damage to a whole lot of vulnerable Americans. It was also bad because he’s going against what the vast majority of the American people want and it’s going to be very bad for his re-election effort,” said Sanders in an interview.

...“My jaw dropped,” said Nancy Altman, co-chair of the Strengthen Social Security coalition and campaign, which includes the AFL-CIO, MoveOn.org Political Action, and the Service Employees International Union.

“My reaction was, ‘Then Mr. President, you don’t know the governor’s record on Social Security.’”

...Roger Hickey, co-director of Campaign for America’s Future, a liberal advocacy group and a member of the Strengthen Social Security coalition said he did not understand Obama’s answer.

“I was dumbfounded,” said Hickey. “He could have said, ‘Lets see if we agree on Social Security, I’m not in favor of cutting benefits, I’m not in favor of privatizing like you and your running mate have advocated.’”

Maybe in places like here or Kos or Huffpo but not in the real world....this one is in the books in most people's mind as a Romney win. In most cases this is sort of a meh with most and isn't swaying that many voters. I have predicted maybe tops a one or two point swing for Romney due to this debate.

It's possible that most people don't have the time, inclination, or ability to fact check (or fact check the checkers) to see who was more accurate in their statement of issues, facts, and rebuttals, so they're left with focusing on who they felt did better on style points.

But if you do too good, then you come off as being slick and rehearsed (a criticism I saw in dealing with law school debates/competitions).

Solid Jobs Report Spawns Crackpot ‘Job Truthers’ Movement

The economy added 114,000 jobs in September and unemployment declined to 7.8 percent. Not great numbers, but paired with major upward revisions to previous monthly reports and taken in the context of a slowly recovering economy, the report was viewed as good news for America.

Unless, of course, you were hoping for bad news. And apparently quite a few of President Obama’s critics were — so much so that they suggested the Bureau of Labor Statistics was part of a vast conspiracy.

The leader of the “job truther” movement: former GE CEO Jack Welch.

“Unbelievable jobs numbers..these Chicago guys will do anything..can’t debate so change numbers,” he said on Twitter.

He had some friends in Congress too. Rep. Allen West (R-FL) tweeted “I agree with former GE CEO Jack Welch, Chicago style politics is at work here.” He added on Facebook that the jobs report was “Orwellian to say the least and representative of Saul Alinsky tactics from the book ‘Rules for Radicals.’”

Gallup Tracker just dropped in their first post debate sample (10/04) into their Presidential Tracker:

[Link: www.gallup.com...]

It was at 49/45 yesterday, and today it's 50/45, so relatively static. Presidential Job Approval at net +9, 52/43 which is down a bit from yesterday's stratospheric numbers.

My wife swears that the Disney XD channel exists to create a nation of pubesent suburban skanks based on how the girls dress on the various shows and the plotlines that revole arround love trianges, kissing and dating. I think she is over reacting and has forgoten the drama of the middle and high school years.

Related, kinda: A few years back, I built and maintained a web site for a company that made clothing for pre-teen girls, and much of it was based upon Madonna's style from the 80s. Minis, bare midriffs, like that.

The two women who ran the company had their daughters model the clothes for the site. It was almost embarrassing to see the way the girls were posed in the pictures.

My wife used to refer to them as 'prosti-tot clothes.' I'm sure it's all fun for the girls who wear them, but I was actually relieved when that company moved on and I didn't have to look at those clothes any more.

Beck asserted that Barton and his work have been "ravaged" in order to undermine the credibility of his extraordinary important new book and Barton agreed, saying that the attacks on him are just like what took place when "God and Satan had debates over Job" as Satan is trying to destroy Barton's work before people start reading it:

Two suspects in the killing of U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens have been detained at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, Turkish broadcaster Kanal D reported on its website on Friday.

It said Turkish police held the two suspects, described as Tunisian citizens, as they tried to enter the country with fake passports, reports Reuters.

Romney surrogate claims ‘Etch A Sketch’ lying is ‘good campaign tactics’

“I’ve been watching and involved in presidential politics since 1960, when I first voted,” Gingrey said. “The Republican, the conservative candidate in the primary, is always going to lean right and come back to the center for the general. The opposite for the Democrat. That’s all you’re seeing here. It’s very typical. We strong conservatives understand that. There are a lot of undecideds in this country that are hopefully right of center, not left of center, and we want those votes too. So, this is campaign strategy. This is nothing new under the sun, and President Obama understands that, for sure.”

“What you have just described, sir, sounds very much to me like an etch-a-sketch moment,” O’Brien replied, noting that Romney campaign communications director Eric Fehrnstrom himself told her in March that the candidate’s principles and policy positions would be shaken up after the primaries “almost like an Etch A Sketch.”

Gingrey didn’t respond to that, instead telling O’Brien that Romney wants to be seen as being able to work well with Democrats.

“That’s not exactly my question,” O’Brien said. “My question is, what you said is during the campaign you lean to the right and then you come back to the center when you’re actually in the general election. So, to me that is, you say one thing to a certain audience to get them to support you, then you say something different, maybe completely contradictory, to another audience — which some could define as lying. So, is that an Etch A Sketch moment that we’re seeing?”

“Well, some would refer to that as campaign tactics,” Gingrey said. “Good campaign tactics, without violating one’s principle. Nobody is more conservative in the Congress, in the House, than Phil Gingrey… I felt very comfortable with what the president said the other night during the debate. I mean, uh, what Mitt Romney said. I am very comfortable with his position.”

Solid Jobs Report Spawns Crackpot ‘Job Truthers’ Movement

Conservatives have a talent for make-belive that puts an average toddler to shame.

My only surprise in this is that the tinfoil hats didn't come out sooner.

As I've mentioned before, I occasionally work with two hardcore conservatives who, four years ago, were convinced they had found proof that the October 08 meltdown was planned to get Obama elected.

What's irritating is that the idiots pushing this crap are wasting their energy on this, instead of being happy that Americans are finding jobs.

That so many of my fellow citizens want to see the country fail in order to take out Obama angers me to no end.

"I don't see these numbers that people are talking about and I don't understand how they can come back later in this month and say that they're revising the numbers from July and August, that they go back and do another survey," he said. "So I'm very questionable of what we do see coming out of this administration because the numbers don't add up."

West was asked by the interviewer whether "the president is engaging in a coverup of the data."

"Well, absolutely," he replied.

None and he was old enough. He's a year older than Al Gore who did serve. Hell the guy actually protested in favor of the draft and then got a service exemption to do missionary work in France. The latter really doesn't bother me but the protesting for the draft and doing that when he was of age certainly does.

Nope, he worked to make sure the draft was implemented, then went and did missionary work in France.

Mitt Romney is just another chicken hawk who has never fought for his country

One thing is for sure: If Romney does get elected and does start another war, no one in his family will fight in it. Neither his father nor Mitt Romney himself nor any of his five sons ever served in the military.

“One of the ways my sons serve our country is helping me get elected,” Romney has said. Heroic.

Romney was military age during the Vietnam War, which he fervently supported in pro-war demonstrations on campus at Stanford University. But instead of running to the nearest recruitment station to volunteer, Willard Mitt Romney avoided the draft by taking three deferments to serve as a missionary in Paris for 31 months.

“It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam,” Romney told the Boston Herald in 1994.

His attitude about the whole thing really pisses me off. I would understand if he was opposed to the war and got the deferment. But he participated in demonstrations in favor of the war and draft, and then ducked out of it. I have no problem at all calling him a coward for that.

1. John Kerry was debate trainer
2. Altitude in Denver
3. Moderator was unfair
4. Been up being Presidential since 6am
5. Post debate polling was unfair
6. All a ruse to rope a dope Romney in the second debate
7. Too sophisticated to call out lies
8. Bad lighting
9. Took notes instead of looked at competitor.
10. Wasn't feeling well.
11. Mitt had notes and Obama didn't
12. Would have rather been celebrating anniversary
13. Really won debate in Bizzarro universe
14. Won on substance and only lost on style

How about - debates only tell you who the best debater is. It doesn't tell you anything else. It doesn't tell you who is accurate. It doesn't tell you who is honest. It doesn't tell you who can communicate with other leaders the best.

It can only give you a hard-on if your guy wins.

Here's the thing....the meme on Romney was that he was an automatron....that he would be Rick Perryish as a debater. In the debate he was the opposite. He was quick witted and fun.

Really? I found the whole thing very boring, especially since I knew how often Romney was lying. What's the point of listening to someone who's just lying about simple, easy to verify things?

When politicians start waving "facts" most people assume they are lying or bending them their direction. In the end, we want to elect someone who can manage the rough spots. Whether you like it or not Obama let Romney in the door.

I'm sorry, this makes no sense to me. I don't know what you mean by managing the rough spots, nor do I know what you mean by Obama letting Romney in the door.
