Report: Jobs Up, Unemployment Down, Right Wing Goes Nuts

It’s a conspiracy!
Politics • Views: 34,765

A pretty good report today from the Bureau of Labor Statistics: Jobs Growth Rises 114,000 as Unemployment Rate Slides to 7.8 Percent.

Any good news on this front, of course, provokes the right wing into a frenzy of conspiracy theories.

It’s just what they do. At this point I don’t think they can even help it. It’s a reflex.

In the last thread, someone coined the term "Jobbers" for people who are buying the conspiracy theories.

As a professional wrestling fan, that term becomes quite humorous in this context because in wrestling terminology a jobber is typically someone who loses all their matches and is there simply to make the other guy look good.

If Obama only created one job over the last 4 years, that's a reason for me to vote for him. I'm talking about MY job.

Look how effective its been so far.

Once you start lobbing conspiracies, it's not just that everything looks like a conspiracy, but that maintenance of dramatic tension requires that every new issue be treated as a conspiracy.

This crap isn't going to go away.

It's so sad how partisan intent distorts simple facts in an election year. My feelings toward the parties are much like how an atheist looks at religion. Man made, artificial, and dysfunctional to a degree that harms many.

Love to see a study on how many lies are repeated by people only during election cycles.

I absolutely detest the truther movement. You can make the argument that a lot of it was fueled by liberals with Bush Derangement Syndrome.

But even at its worst, the influence of those psychos had next to no impact on Democratic Party policies.

To watch how conspiracy and paranoia has influenced the GOP since January '09 is truly, truly depressing. I want opposition grounded in reality and arguing points that don't read like fantasies of which even Alex Jones would say, "Guys? Can you take it down a notch?"

And if the numbers had favored them, they would be jumping up and down with glee.

Of course they would.

Nate Silver has an interesting analysis of the #'s. Including this:

However, the jobs numbers are one of the more hopeful signs for the economy on balance. An average of 146,000 jobs have been created per month over the past year, or closer to 157,000 with the government’s anticipated benchmark revisions accounted for.

Those aren’t great numbers by any means, and would translate to an annualized growth rate of 1.4 percent. But over the past 25 years, payroll jobs have grown at an annualized rate of 1.1 percent, or the equivalent of about 125,000 jobs added per month given today’s population. By this measure, it’s been a fairly average economic year, although certainly not enough to make up for the productivity that was lost from the economy in 2008 and 2009.

Every POTUS has these baseless accusations. "Don't worry Bush will fix gas prices before the election" "Hilary invests $1000, makes $100,000" and now this.

Gas is up now, and will likely back off some in November. Guess what we will hear then? Obama did it. He won't, he can't. Neither did either Bush. What a load.

Santorum suggests ‘eating’ Big Bird: ‘You can kill things and still like them’

CNN host Piers Morgan asked Santorum on Thursday if he would also “kill Big Bird.”

“Well, as a matter of fact, I’ve voted to kill Big Bird,” Santorum replied proudly. “That doesn’t mean I don’t like Big Bird. You can kill things and still like them. I mean, maybe to eat them.”

“That’s probably not — can we go back on that one,” the former Pennsylvania senator added, waiving his hands at the camera.

“That was beautifully, badly phrased,” Morgan agreed.

For what it is worth, I expect the economy and jobs to be improving for the next six months regardless of who wins. The main driver of this is the Fed deciding they need to boost the economy a bit with an indefinite QE3.

WaPo: There was one president who tried to manipulate BLS

As it happens, there is a historical example of improper political pressure on the BLS by a U.S. president: Republican Richard M. Nixon.

As first recounted by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein in their 1976 book “Final Days,” the frequently paranoid president — who had a history of anti-Semitic outbursts — became obsessed with the idea that a “Jewish cabal” at BLS was undermining him by issuing negative labor numbers. Nixon ordered his subordinates to tally up the number of Democrats and Jews in the agency.

“There’s a Jewish cabal, you know, running through this,” Nixon fumed in July 1971 to his chief of staff, H.R. “Bob” Haldeman, according to White House tapes. “…And they all — they all only talk to Jews. Now, but there it is. But there’s the BLS staff. Now how the hell do you ever expect us to get anything from that staff, the raw data, let alone what the poor guys have to say [inaudible] that isn’t gonna be loaded against us? You understand?”

According to journalistic accounts and documents, the task fell to Nixon aide Fred Malek, who first counted high-ranking Democrats at BLS using voter registration lists and then identified employees with “Jewish-sounding” names. He reported the resulting statistics to Nixon in a 1971 letter that became known as the “Jew-counting” memo, identifying 25 Democrats and 13 employees who “fit the other demographic criterion that was discussed.”

...

In 2007, Timothy Noah of Slate publicized a previously unreleased 1971 memo from Malek suggesting he was much more closely involved in a BLS purge then he had claimed, outlining a reorganization that resulted in the demotions of at least four high-ranking Jewish employees. The Nixon Presidential Library and Museum has also posted some, but not all, documents related to the affair on its Web site.

Malek has remained a prominent adviser to Republicans from George H.W. Bush to Sarah Palin, and is co-founder with former senator Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) of the American Action Network conservative group. He is now a top fundraiser for 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

The funniest thing is the office of the Presidency has almost no direct influence or impact on employment. Everything a President can do can be undone by bigger events. And often is. Wars. The fed. Embargoes. Chinas economy. The Euro. Hurricanes and oil platforms. Manufacturing trends like the dot com boom that made our economy huge, and off shoring that hurt it so badly.

Now white collar jobs get off shored and college degrees are not as good as they used to be in making you more money.

Bottom line-This is a myth buried in a myth buried in another myth.

And part of the root of this is that I think the politicians, parties, and government do not like the fact that things *can* be totally beyond their control. So there is a desire to claim control that doesn't exist and also claim credit (and shed blame) for events that they did not actually have any effect on.

Pastors to challenge IRS over political endorsements, and they’re likely to get away with it

LOS ANGELES — In a matter of days, some 1,400 American pastors are planning to break the law.

And they’re likely to get away with it.

As part of “Pulpit Freedom Sunday,” on Oct. 7, religious leaders across the country will endorse political candidates — an act that flies in the face of Internal Revenue Service rules about what tax-exempt organizations, such as churches, can and cannot do.

The IRS says tax-exempt organizations, or what they refer to as a 501(c)(3), are prohibited from participating in partisan campaigning for or against political candidates. Yet, despite what’s in the rules, the agency continues to struggle to do anything about those who defy the law.

Though the regulation has been in place since 1954, in 2009, the U.S. District Court of Minnesota ruled the IRS no longer had the appropriate staff to investigate places of worship after a reorganization changed who in the agency had the authority to launch investigations...

Colbert: Lying worked for Romney, so f*&k it

Colbert examined Mitt’s curious slide to the left on many of his positions.

“I will not reduce the taxes paid by high-income Americans,” Romney insisted in one clip.

“Regulation is essential. You can’t have a functioning free market without regulation,” he said in another.

“Now you know me,” said Colbert, “I’m a staunch conservative and I condemn any Republican who distances themselves from everything he has said on the campaign trail. But it worked, so fuck it.”

Republican fury over the improved job numbers is hurting them. Their desire to see the country hurt to enhance their chances for regaining power has been communicated to the low-info voters and it has hurt them.

I'm using my low-info conservative leaning friend as a bell weather. (She's the one who actually had to ask me a year or so ago if Obama was a Dem or Rep.) She votes for the candidates she likes best and that is based on only a very few parameters, party isn't much of an issue typically. Our few and far between political chats as we're out walking our dogs every evening got her interested enough to watch the debate. We met afterwards to walk and her reaction to it fascinated me. While I was sputtering about Romney's lies and Obama's failure to pound on them, she had a real different take.

Her feelings that are leading her to vote for Obama are:

1) There's a presidency learning curve and he's had 4 years to learn the job and get better at it. He's the clear choice in terms of experience for her.

2) She is PISSED at the Republican obstruction that has prevented anything getting done. It's really at the top of her list on her reasons for voting for Obama. Romney comes off to her as an in-it-for-the-power grifter. She doesn't see any more desire in him to serve the people of the country than she has seen in the rest of the party the past 4 years and it's leaving a very foul taste in her mouth.

This current GOP rage at the improved jobs numbers is going to reinforce that (OK, with a bit of help from moi).

Republican National Lawyers Association Plan For Losing Candidates: Challenge Absentee Voters

Republican lawyers have a plan for their candidates who lose on Election Day: send operatives to absentee voters’ homes and challenge their ballots.

Christine Svenson, a vice chair of the Republican National Lawyers Association, warned repeatedly about absentee voter fraud during a panel at the Colorado Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday. To combat such fraud, Svenson recommended that campaigns gather the names of local absentee voters and search their addresses on Google to “make sure that those buildings are not crack houses, row houses, slumlord houses.” For the record, people who live in row houses or who have abusive landlords do not lose their right to vote. Neither do people unfortunate enough to live in the same building as a drug dealer.

At the end of the panel, Svenson was asked how to handle unfavorable election results. Her answer strongly suggested that Republicans should try to change the result of the election by challenging absentee ballots:

Seriously, what the fuck is this shit?

Polls: Obama Up By 61 Among Latinos In Nevada, 30 In Florida

President Barack Obama owns commanding leads among Latino voters in two heavily targeted swing states, new polling data released Thursday shows.

According to Latino Decisions, Obama claims a colossal lead among Nevada Latinos, 78 percent to 17 percent. The margin is narrower in Florida, with its high population of right-leaning Cuban-Americans, but the president still dominates among the voting bloc, 61 percent to 31 percent.

Game. Over.

There are some funny videos of Santorum, Gingrich, Perry, etc. calling Mitt a liar downstairs.

Well, we're going to hear "He should have picked Rubio" but I really don't think Rubio would have really helped him. Maybe a little but I think to the Latino community it would have been seen how many women saw Palin.

This video is comedy gold. I mean, you've got a chorus of people saying "aaamen" in the background, a politician doing his best Elmer Gantry impression, and an insane background assemblage of dead deers.

The Republican party keeps putting people like this in a position to influence education and yet there are still people willing to rationalize this away for a Romney victory.

First Here in California Republican is a lot different than say Texas. I first got political in the anti busing fight. Then I saw "my" former party abandon California as far as spending money or time. Then I saw how the other side ran and runs the state.

Both lost my confidence and faith at that point.

Coal Workers Say Murray Energy ‘Coerces’ Them To Make GOP Donations: ‘If You Don’t Contribute, Your Job’s At Stake’

According to accounts from multiple coal miners, employees were forced to attend the event without pay. “Just for the record, if we did not go, we knew what would happen,” said one miner in a letter to a local radio station. Weeks later, Romney’s campaign featured images of the coal miners in a pro-coal ad. (The Obama campaign hit back this week with an ad claiming Romney used coal workers as “props”).

But that was just the tip of the iceberg. An expose from New Republic Senior Editor Alec MacGillis shows that Murray Energy is doing far more than requiring employees to spend uncompensated time at campaign events — the company is actually requiring them to donate to GOP candidates like Romney:

The accounts of two sources who have worked in managerial positions at the firm, and a review of letters and memos to Murray employees, suggest that coercion may also explain Murray staffers’ financial support for Romney. Murray, it turns out, has for years pressured salaried employees to give to the Murray Energy political action committee (PAC) and to Republican candidates chosen by the company. Internal documents show that company officials track who is and is not giving. The sources say that those who do not give are at risk of being demoted or missing out on bonuses, claims Murray denies.

The Murray sources, who requested anonymity for fear of retribution, came forward separately. But they painted similar pictures of the fund-raising operation. “There’s a lot of coercion,” says one of them. “I just wanted to work, but you feel this constant pressure that, if you don’t contribute, your job’s at stake. You’re compelled to do this whether you want to or not.” Says the second: “They will give you a call if you’re not giving. . . . It’s expected you give Mr. Murray what he asks for.”

Well, it is Murray Energy's money after all.

I have heard more than a few on the right make the claim that the money an employer pays to an employee remains the employer's money so that taxes paid on it are taxes paid by the employer.

By that logic, the money the employer has remains the government's money because that is who they got it from.

Pretty soon they'll be saying the whole concept of numbers is a liberal conspiracy.

Mel and Norma Gabler were career school textbook protest pests for decades in Texas. They actually did claim at one point that certain types of math are a liberal conspiracy.

They consistently have opposed texts that provide students with open-ended questions, include sex education or depict women in nontraditional roles, and history textbooks that devote "too much" space to the Vietnam War, Watergate, poverty or slavery. "When a student reads in a math book that there are no absolutes, suddenly every value he's been taught is destroyed," Mel Gabler has said. "And the next thing you know, the student turns to crime and drugs."

I grew up in Orange County, I know what California Republicans are like.

You were anti-busing? The way they settled it in Fullerton was to close the school where most of the Hispanics were (it was even more segregated then than it is now) and bus them all over the rest of the district. Really hurt the neighborhood.

So are you saying that before 1990 you judged people more on what party they belonged to than you do now, because you realized that they both suck?

This is why it makes no sense, under current circumstances, to "vote the person, not the party". So what if your local Republican congressional candidate is a fine, upstanding sort? If you vote for him/her, you're just voting to give the Not-From-This-Reality Party continued control over the operations of Congress.

238 Daniel Ballard  Fri, Oct 5, 2012 1:12:35pm

re: #236 wrenchwench

I gave more weight to party than I do now, which is about zero.

Yes I was and am devoutly anti forced busing of kids to distant schools. If the local schools suck, fix them. Adding a long bus commute and a strange (In some cases dangerous) neighborhood to the learning experience is not helpful to a persons education. It's putting social engineering ahead of educating them.

239 labman57  Fri, Oct 5, 2012 6:31:42pm

This was inevitable.

Many Republican pundits and right wing extremists in the blogosphere regard positive employment reports in the same manner that they view Obama's birth certificate, climate change data, and claims that bin Laden is dead -- denial, denial, denial ... i.e., it must be doctored, falsified evidence.

Because if it conflicts with the message of their rhetoric, then it must be part of a grand conspiracy to deceive the American public.
