Millennials: 0 fucks given about privacy
Study: U.K. Teens Fleeing ‘Dead and Buried’ Facebook
Răzvan Nicolescu, this week commented on the team’s findings around European attitudes towards privacy on social media platforms.
“The questionnaires we applied this summer in our Italian fieldsite showed that around 40 percent of respondents who were on Facebook had never changed their privacy settings, which means their profiles were public,” Nicolescu said in a post on the project’s official blog.
“At the same time, more than 80 percent responded they were not concerned or did not care if an individual or an organization would use their personal data available on the platform.”
Nicolescu called the percentage of Italian social media users who had a seemingly blasé attitude towards their privacy “much higher than I expected.” What’s more, the researcher described the Italian indifference to privacy as “relatively high when compared to similar data collected from other fieldsites in the project”
Millenials are going to be an interesting bunch. It looks like concepts such as privacy and going to be the new equivalent of “get off my lawn”.

Indian culture is undergoing some very disturbing trends:
India Gang Rape Victim Was Attacked Twice
A young woman was kidnapped and raped by two gangs in India - a year after a fatal rape shook the nation.
Police have arrested 10 people and charged six of them with raping the a 21-year-old victim in southern India.

I get a weekly email digest from International School Review. Following the arrest of that Indian diplomat in NYC recently, the Indian government is talking about reprisals toward Americans living in India, including teachers.
From the email digest:
The Indian government claims the manner in which the arrest was carried out is inhumane and barbaric. In response, they have revoked all diplomatic privileges for American Embassy personnel and removed protective barriers protecting the U.S. embassy. The Indian government says it will now examine what the American Embassy pays its Indian help and how much domestic help is paid by U.S. government diplomats. It was also announced that India plans to review the salaries, bank accounts and tax status of all American teachers working in International Schools throughout the country

That, as James Randi might say, is industrial grade Woo-Woo. If he simply believed it himself I wouldn’t have any real problem with his delusions. It’s the fact that he has people who listen to him, people who have real illnesses that could be treated with success, but due to his garbage they don’t get the treatment until it’s too late, at best.
It’s the same as religious who don’t get medical treatment for their children when they are ill, but believe in the power of prayer. Pray all you want, but get the kid to a doctor. You have the right to refuse treatment. Your children don’t have the ability to make any kind of informed consent. ARRRGH>>>

So what’s the attraction for these unhealthy looking bigots?
‘Duck Dynasty’ verdict analysis: Why A&E backed down
“But what probably helped turn the tide in the Robertsons’ favor was that the debate wasn’t as clear-cut as the network and many in the media initially assumed. Robertson and his supporters argued that his anti-gay statements were an extension of his passion for the Bible. Once that frame gained a foothold — that this fight is about religion, and the freedom to endorse biblical teachings — A&E was stuck in the awkward position of appearing to advocate against both its own star and orthodox Christianity (ironic, considering A&E Networks garnered such goodwill from Christians for taking a chance on its The Bible mini-series on History this year).”
Which means to me that bigotry, even—hell, especially—when inspired by the bible, is approved and perfectly fine.
Not in my view. I saw this many, many years ago as a small child and I knew it was as wrong then as it is now, and as wrong as it has been over my lifetime.

Spot on.
I might be wading into this mess at the annual family Christmas gathering later today. I’m sure there’s going to be at least one person complaining about how Robertson’s 1st Amendments were trampled by A&E.
But, yeah, at the end-of-the-day, this is A&E signaling they’re fine with being associated with homophobic religious lunatics. Money trumps endorsing bigotry, I guess.

Just like in so many war-torn areas, some folks just can’t seem to catch a break. I cannot imagine what it must be like to live in constant fear of random death being visited upon my community. Yes, we have mass-shootings, random acts of violence, etc., but the vast majority of the U.S. is a relatively peaceful place.
Edit: Not to say that there aren’t some communities here where that fear does exist.

One again - A&E has a history of this now. They own the History channel which, in between the Aliens and Nazi shows, run Bible programs.
This is Disney and Hearst at their finest as corporations - making money off of the rubes.

Has anyone suggested Phil Robertson run for any kind of political office yet? It has to happen at some point. After all, the man speaks for maybe 10% of the nation. At the least he will be on the Tea speaker circuit, maybe a fly-in to Iowa or New Hampshire will be scheduled.

I can see a hunting swap between Phil and Teddy Nugent. A wild boar shoot in Texas followed by a duck hunt in Louisiana.
Only problem might be Ted will want to use an AR-15 style rifle on the ducks. It might work though if Gov. Jindal grants him a special permit to go full auto on them ducks.
And thanks Darthstar for the reminder of those great Republican Rebranding get-togethers like CPAC and Value Voters Summit. Perfect for Phil to get up on that soapbox and preach the hate and take the country back from the other 90%!

Hundreds seek to flee Central African Republic on emergency flights
(Reuters) - Hundreds of people tried to flee inter-religious violence in Central African Republic on Saturday aboard emergency flights to neighboring Chad, while nearby countries appealed for help to rescue their citizens from the mounting humanitarian crisis.
“Tit-for-tat violence between Muslim Seleka rebels, who seized power in March, and Christian self-defense militias have killed more than 1,000 people this month in the riverside capital Bangui and displaced hundreds of thousands more.”

1) The Beatles went to India and made it a Place to Go. (Unlike legions of their followers, they took what they found there seriously — or at least Harrison did.)
2) The boomers grew up in unprecedented material comfort (and they could find work easily too). They never had to worry about being without food, clothing and shelter, even if they “turned their back on materialism,” so they learned the wrong lesson — sure, money won’t buy happiness, but you can’t ignore “things” if you don’t have that minimum.

It’s a publisher’s decision where to place an ad, and an editor’s on where to place a story. Just unfortunate placement. No need to defend the ad itself.
Actually, the ad department places the ads, often depending on preferred section and even page (back page, full-color, for instance) requested by the advertiser. The publisher (depending on the size of the paper) doesn’t have any interaction with the actual daily content of the paper), mainly because there’s NFW a publisher is going to be at the office until a late night deadline.
A page designer places the copy, and, depending on the system, doesn’t actually see the ad that’s going to go in that spot. Now, somebody looking over final page proofs (assuming they still have someone who does that), should have noticed the unfortunate juxtaposition.

The Beatles did it because they could and the interest was a result of their earlier experimentation with drugs and “expanding” their consciousness.
No one has to leave their own country to discover their goodness or the “meaning of life”. Introspection can be performed anywhere. The trick is, you really have to work at developing understanding—it’s not something that can simply be absorbed by adopting another’s philosophy.

The real racists are the ones on the left!!!!
A very unfortunate story from New Jersey…
A prominent New Jersey doctor well known for taking in foster kids was rocked by an unthinkable horror — when one of his adopted children allegedly stabbed another to death in their home.
“Rest peacefully, angel,” Dr. Robert Gallo wrote on his Facebook page with a picture of his daughter Teia, 20.
Her foster brother, Travis Gallo, 17, allegedly stabbed her repeatedly with a kitchen knife at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday in front of two other siblings at their Washington Township home, sources said.
Both the children were African-American. Why does this matter, because before my morning shower I was following an evolution thread over at FR and happen to hit this tread regarding the story. What follows are some actual posts, and only one person has commented that there “seem to be some racist things here”. You were warned.
I draw from this story more conclusions about race than about adoption.
I’m no anthropologist, nor am I a behaviorist (though I wanted to be both at one point) but I’m beginning to think there’s something about the Negro race that contributes to excessive emotionalism and impulsivity. The Negro race is one that evolved in response to a climate that’s hot almost all year long. Under those circumstances, excessive movement is undesirable. Yet at times, energetic movement is necessary, even life-saving. The nervous and endorcine systems of Negroes could have evolved to the point where sudden and forceful stimuli were required to move the individual from a necessary lethargy in order to take quick, decisive action where it’s needed. The conclusions are obvious.
and if that’s not bad enough, somebody else cuts to the bone…
Can take ‘em out of the jungle, but cant take the jungle out of them…..
Between this and the daily spew that comes from the likes of various RW pundits, as vile if only more subtle (in some cases), I do have a very real fear for our political process.

Even if it is an overheard remark, it makes the speaker sound like an asshole to me, because ‘agreeing’ with another person’s lifestyle is often as relevant as ‘agreeing’ with another person’s race or religion. It’s nobody’s business, and someone who feels compelled to express their disapproval of another human, especially if that human has no impact on the disapprover’s life, is an asshole. It’s a little stronger of a term than I would post, unless I knew of maddening specifics, I would say jerk.

Speaking of moralizing over other people’s lives being destructive, example number one is the pope. The human being who carries the unborn life is a human being. The unborn life is a potential human being. The actual human is in control of her own body, and whatever she wants to do with the unborn life within her is her business. That’s my position.
The idea that some institution’s definition of the life within that woman causes the woman to lose the right to say what happens to her body is abhorrent to me. That idea has repercussions for that woman’s life that need to be thought about long and hard before going ahead with such an inherently fascist idea that she should lose her control. Most men have not done that long and hard thinking, and a lot of women also have not. Some have done that thinking and sided with the unborn life over the woman. I will always disagree with them.

I have to say “if God takes that many” isn’t the way I look at it. That early in development there is nothing there to take.
For the rest of it, I’m not as far to the other side as you seem to be — I would allow the fetus some rights, even against the mother, late in gestation (and certainly once it’s viable). I don’t have a problem with “necessary for the life and/or health of the mother.” But that’s a decision for the woman and her doctor. (What woman gets an abortion at that stage unless it’s absolutely necessary?)
I almost forgot the “quality of life” issue. But again, it’s the mother and doctor who decide what to do about a fetus that is certain to die (well, we all are, of course), or to live a short, miserable life.

If you page back, you’ll see where I wished everyone “merry Christmans.” No, it’s not a Freudian slip, sometimes a typo is just a typo.

re: #271 Snarknado!
The bolded part is why I think there need not be any restrictions on a woman’s choice to abort. Sure, we can all imagine an instance where a woman waits too long, and her reasons for waiting weren’t good (actually I don’t have to imagine, I knew a woman who fits this description), but if the health system and other systems are functioning well, these instances will be so few that it isn’t worth imposing restrictions when the restrictions will cause way more problems than they will solve.
It’s not that I see nothing wrong with any abortion at any time, it’s that preventing those problem cases is not best done by restricting anyone else’s decisions.

Okay, but I’m still for leaving it in the law. It might also be the only shelter for a doctor who doesn’t want to perform a medically unnecessary procedure on a viable fetus.

You KNOW I covet them.
Beautiful.
Thanks! I told my folks I was taking the pixs for you! They bought them at an estate sale of an old family friend about 25 years ago.

Wow. They are very unique. I’ve never seen any like them.
Finding a Grandma’s stash is the goal. Really hard now a days.

Thou shalt not covet the ornaments nor the decorations nor the garlands of your fellow lizard. Neither their natural or artificial tree shall thee lust after.

Here in the mid-west every estate sale shows photos of a little card table set up with the home’s christmas decorations. Most now are from the 1980’s and not that great looking.

Thanks, those windows get lots of sun and run all along that wall, so it does look cool.

There are few things more hostile than expressing disagreement with another person’s choices, especially if unbidden, and even more especially if it is a stranger.
Be like me walking up to everyone I see wearing a cross and berating them for believing in fairy tales. And telling them they are abusing their kids by teaching them things like that.
It is not my business, it is not other peoples business. So they should just shut the fuck up.

40%? I hadn’t understood the number was so low.
The intelligent Designer’s debugger wasn’t working right that day. Left a few unintentional spontaneous abortion bugs in the products code. Those will be fixed in the next version coming out after this version exterminates itself (which will also be fixed in v2.0)

The reasons behind the spontaneous abortions can be fascinating.
