US activists rap ‘military colonization’ of Okinawa

Over 100 prominent American activists have expressed solidarity with the Japanese people, who are against a US military base hosting thousands of US troops in Japans’ Okinawa Island. In a Wednesday statement, the activists, including the filmmakers Oliver Stone and Michael Moore, voiced their support for the residents of the island in their struggle for peace and dignity.

“Not unlike the 20th century US civil rights struggle, Okinawans have non-violently pressed for the end to their military colonization,” the statement said, adding, “We support the people of Okinawa in their non-violent struggle for peace, dignity, human rights and protection of the environment.”

Well, if they’re going to be set in Lubbock one of the episodes will have to feature a smug wingnut “prepper” (whose supplies got his family through the Blackout) calling the heroine a ‘whore’ or a black character the n-word.

If there aren’t obnoxious wingnuts, it ain’t Lubbock.

Bowling for Columbine would have been a fantastic film if Moore hadn’t inserted himself into the story.

He was making some really great points about the media culture of fear (“72 Things in Your Kitchen That Can Kill You! News at 11!”) and about the violent culture. Then he had to get stupid and do things like try to connect Lockheed Martin to Columbine because they’re in Littleton, and doing the KMart refund thing. He destroyed his own narrative.

Heh, I’ve gotta admit I’m kinda fascinated by the way you assign what I’ve come to think of as “points”. It’s like you have this calculator in your head or…. maybe something more like one of those machines where you dump a bunch of coins in and they all get sorted nice & neat and the readout on the screen tells you exactly how much it’s all worth. Please note that I’m NOT laughing at you or mocking you—I just can’t figure out exactly how you tally things up.

Haven’t seen anything of Moore’s since F-911. Felt like he grew or perhaps always was pretty self-righteous and I thought he was hypocritical given that he accused Clinton of waging the dog in Kosovo and yet he endorsed Wesley Clark for president in 2004 which was funny to me given the fact that he had criticized Gore as being too close to Bush in 2000 and here he endorsed someone with no ideological record and someone who was the closest the Clintons had to a candidate without formally having a candidate. I think Morgan Spurlock’s a more effective documentarian for the record. More thought provoking than Moore IMO.

The Okinawans have put up with a raft of crap, that much is certain. Ever take a look at a map of the place, US bases absolutely dominate, cut the island damned near in two with others pushed right up to the population centers. Fifty years ago the bases contributed 50% to the local economy, so the 20% of the land they took up was probably seen as a tolerable trade off. Now the bases’ contribution to the local economy is about 4 to 5 percent, and there’s a long history of violent crime and rapes of local girls perpetuated by US servicemen.

We’ve done a hell of a lot to wear out our welcome there. Moore might be an ass, but that’s independent of any sympathy he’s shown to the Okinawan position on this issue.

I’m an…eclectic…dresser. Very fond of black so I often look like a Goth gone to seed, without the make up.

I was walking along one day in one of my eclectic sets of clothes: Duster, jean shirt, jeans and cowboy boots. All in black of course.

One person walking towards me asks, “What’s it like in The Matrix?” in sort of a sneering tone.

Without breaking step I replied, “You tell me, copper top.”

He then got the oddest look on his face.

I think my suspension of disbelief suffered a severe case of metal fatigue in Reloaded and collapsed with Revolutions. I understand that the Wachowskis wanted to make one sequel that would have been more tight story-wise, but in retrospect I figure it would have been just most of the glaring plot holes of the two sequels covered up with so much action that you wouldn’t stop to question the movie until you were halfway to the parking lot.

Now that you mention it, the muskets alone would give it that dubious honor. I mean, do people really think you couldn’t make a repeating rifle without electricity? I guess they have never seen Chuck Connors as The Rifleman (similarly set where there is no electricity). Not to mention the idea that almost all modern guns would disappear in just 15 years. Hell, many preppers have enough ammo to last centuries, literally, and the guns will carry on as long as anyone wants them. That is not the only missing tech in the series either. Diesel engines are quite happy to run without electricity, and even hophead morons Hollywood screenwriters should know that are steam engines predate electricity, with all kinds of implications.

Cypher had mentioned to Neo that after awhile, just by looking at the code, you could “see” what was going on in the Matrix.

So I assumed he was just “typing” it rather than “jacked-into” it… until he started talking about tasting the steak. (Dropped plot point, methinks.)

Also, you noticed that Cypher didn’t want to remember anything when he was dropped back into the Matrix and his real name is “Mister Reagan,” yes?

My wife and I saw Stone’s JFK in the same Dallas theater where it had premiered a few days earlier. We were approached outside by a blonde TV reporter and her crew. She was asking people if the movie had changed their opinion about who had actually killed JFK. My 5’11” wife looked down at her with lordly disdain and, with no hesitation at all, said, “Why yes, I now think that Oliver Stone did it.” The segment did not air.

I am one of the few people who liked Reloaded and thought Revolutions totally sucked on ice.

Probably because I’m a tabletop RPG gamer, rather than a computer gamer or tabletop wargamer, but that’s just a theory.

Reloaded worked because it introduced a lot of interesting twists and characters, the Oracle is a program, the Merovingian, his weird henchmen, Persephone, the Keymaker, the Architect, Zion. It presented the beginning of a mythology that looked like it had promise, like the first couple seasons of LOST. Then, like LOST, it became clear that going in the writers had no real story arc concept at all and most of that mythology was meaningless.

I’m back. I now have a lot more desk space, only wires / power adapters / cables that are actually IN USE are behind the desk, and things are laid out nice and neat. I took the time to vacuum out the computer at the desk, the dust screens had built up a good amount, but that what they are there for. Inside looked good.

The other machine under the desk is from the long ago, when I was part of the public beta of Windows Home Server. It’s an Athlon II x2 , 2.8 gig with 4 gig of ram. Not a super machine, but I’ll probably blow it away, end up doing something with it. Any suggestions?

My opinion of The Merovingian is that he was one of the previous iterations of The One. It explained his cynical and selfish attitude. Plus Monica Bellucci. Yum.

And when The Architect said to The Oracle, “What do you think I am? Human?” I shouted, in the theatre, “Yes! Only a human is stupid enough to believe they can make a perfect world!”

Ultimately, at least in the cold war’s theory, it is that you protect the nation by setting up places as far away as possible to be protected first. If you look at the various parts of The World War (28 June 1914 - 11 November 1918, 1 September 1939- 1 September 1945. 2 September 1945 - 9 November 1989) you’ll see that’s not a bad idea as far as the US is concerned. If you keep the bad guys as far away as possible, you have the least danger to the nation.

To put it in perspective, if another country had military bases controlling 20% of Hawaii with a history of raping the locals, we’d be pretty damned vocal about it. In part this goes on because there’s a semi-colonial relationship between the Okinawans and the Japanese. For a long time it was difficult for them to find good jobs outside their own island, where one grew up, where they went to school and where their parents came from mattered. Until the 70’s it was very difficult for anyone to travel freely back and forth, and afterwards there was a pronounced mainstreaming effort on the part of the government, intent on discouraging any separate identity or expression of Ryokan customs. It’s only recently that Okinawans living in the northern islands have started to reassert themselves as being part of a distinct culture.

Point being, historically public opinion in Okinawa regarding the bases hasn’t carried any particular importance to the Japanese government.

This is what the Japanese version of the Tea Party looks like:

Three members of Japan’s House of Representatives called on Glendale to remove an 1,100-pound statue honoring an estimated 80,000 to 200,000 “comfort women” from Korea, China and other countries who were forced into prostitution by the Japanese army during World War II.

The trio, Mio Sugita of the Hyogo Prefecture, Yuzuru Nishida of Chiba, and Hiromu Nakamaru of Hiroshima, are members of the Japan Restoration Party, a 1-year-old conservative political party that prefers a smaller central government, tax cuts and a hard-line approach to national security.

“The news that the statue was installed made a big noise in Japan,” Nishida said, as it describes the women as sex slaves. “That hurts Japan’s honor.”

But statue opponents, including the three Japanese politicians, say the women acted willingly and claim the estimated number of comfort women is greatly inflated.

In addition to calling for the Glendale statue’s removal, the Japanese politicians also said they wanted the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to revise its account of the comfort women system and for their colleagues in Parliament to retract an apology to comfort women made by Japanese officials in the 1990s.

It’s a shame that Japan tolerates this kind of shit from their government officials, but who are we to judge I guess.

There is a glaring difference though between how Germany has historically confronted its record of WWII atrocities and how the Japanese government has repeatedly sought to whitewash and downplay theirs. Nationally the Germans wallow in their own shame, to a degree that is at times almost embarrassing, whereas Japanese PMs keep visiting that war shrine and wondering what the big deal is.

I think a lot of this is the result of the atomic bombings, which gave the Japanese government a convenient cloak of victimhood - which in itself is kind of messed up considering the horrible discrimination the Hibakusha and their descendants have faced within their own country.

The word “honoring” in that report on the subject of “honoring comfort women” made me have to read it back over a few times/pick up context to realize it was more like “remembering” or “to keep people from forgetting about” and not a “whores, what great gals they were!” kind of thing….

I was very confuzzled…

I don’t know how my day tomorrow or even rest of this night is going to turn out. My daughter puked all over her bed a little while ago. She is in bed with mom for the rest of the night. Mom put a towel in front of her and a small trash can next to her in case she had to puke again. A few minutes ago she puked again…all over our new comforter. I not count on getting very much sleep.

Is there a semi-comfortable chair you could move into the bedroom and sleep in?

Indeed, this is one of many issues that come between Japan and China, the latter of which has not forgotten or forgiven the crimes committed during Japanese Occupation. Japan refuses to apologize for or even acknowledge any war crimes. As you can tell from the attitude of these three ultra-rightist Japanese politicians, there is a lot of denialism and double-think regarding Japan’s wartime activities. Suggesting the “comfort women” came willingly is ludicrous, as any idiot would understand they were prisoners-of-war and had little choice in the matter. “Come fuck our soldiers, or die!”

funky chicken is probably right. Norovirus is highly contagious, so make sure the bedcovers and towel are washed thoroughly and aired outside if possible. Wash your hands often, and try to encourage your girl to sneeze or cough into the crook of her arm. Anything y’all touch will need to be wiped down, too.

Norovirus is what makes those cruise ship passengers sick every so often.

ADDENDUM: Oh, nurse is in the house! You’re in good hands.

My mother’s soda of choice for sick people was 7-Up if Canada Dry was not around. But ginger tea would work fine, too, if carbonation is a problem. Ginger helps settle the stomach.

And that’ll do it as the Chicago Blackhawks end a losing streak in decisive fashion. Trailing by 2 goals early in the 2nd period, they delivered 4 unanswered goals by the end of that period. Joined by an empty net power play goal late in the 3rd period, that gives the Blackhawks a 5-2 win over their rivals the Vancouver Canucks.

The one time I you super sick at college (got sick on Saturday and was still so sick I had to miss classes on Monday and Tuesday, honestly just walking down to the cafeteria put such a strain on my body that I threw up into a trash can once I got there, and onto the floor of my dorm building (the lobby of it basically) when I got back) the school medical staff gave me some Gatorade powder to help make sure I could drink some calories if nothing else.

I honestly love Gatorade anyway so that was a square peg in a square hole situation if ever there was one…

I actually fell asleep in the theater during the second Matrix film. During the rave scene, no less. I think I woke up about 15-20 minutes to the end. I have never gone back to watch it, and have never seen the third movie.

Sorry, I don’t think China would invade Japan if we shut down all our bases on Okinawa. There isn’t any reason for the massive expenditure or antagonization of the Okinawans. I figure they understand threats they face better than we do anyway.

It is about strategic posture, maintaining bases at locations all over the globe to allow for refueling and logistical support wherever we choose to employ our military. (I was about to write “wherever we need to”, but realize that is a rather subjective criterion)

In Ukraine, death and protest come with a history

washingtonpost.com

Kiev, Ukraine — In the gray light of falling snow, hundreds of protesters left the encampment on Independence Square, trudged uphill and, after a brief halt in front of the Ministry of Interior, went on to the headquarters of the Security Service of Ukraine.

“They were demanding the release of one of the most popular organizers of the long-running protest here, Ihor Lutsenko, who had been abducted from a hospital 12 hours earlier, along with another man, Yuriy Verbytsky.

(snip)

“Forty-seven years earlier, at the height of Soviet power, a similar group had staged a similar demonstration in the same place — though in 1967, the imposing gray building housed not the Ukrainian security service, but the KGB.”

Morning, all. Woke to the noise of firemen putting out a house down the street. They’re earning their pay in these conditions. One aspect of this storm system in the South—our short-range weather forecasting has gone to hell. We are 10 degrees above the overnight prediction, and the rest of the week has been revised sharply upward. The low Saturday is to be 57. Part of the mess in Birmingham was caused by an error of about 50-100 miles in the storm track.

Ukraine’s president Yanukovych takes sick leave amid calls for resignation
Has a nice palace to “recover” in, though.

No indication of how long Viktor Yanukovych will be on leave after statement on presidential website

theguardian.com

How nice. Its est value $75—100M. Pure luxury and amenities galore, both inside the residence and in the surrounding acreage.

Image: Panorama_villa.jpg

Check out how he surreptitiously acquired this palace.

opendemocracy.net

“Viktor Yanukovych spent his entire working life as a government official, and his wife is a pensioner. Before he was elected president he received a Ukrainian MP’s salary, equivalent to up to $2,000 a month. He has no official income to explain this level of expenditure. To buy one door for his residence for $64,000, he would have had to put by three years’ worth of salary, without even allowing for living expenses.

“Admittedly, Yanukovych’s latest tax return put his income somewhat higher. It turns out that last year, on top of his salary, he received $2,000,000 from a Donetsk publisher for an as yet unpublished, and indeed unwritten, book of memoirs. Given that his previous foray into literature was a fiasco - he was accused of plagiarism and the book removed from the shelves - it is not surprising that this large fee was immediately interpreted as a means of laundering the president’s shadier sources of income.

“In Ukraine, which occupies 152-nd place (out of 182) in global corruption listings, such facts about Yanukovych do not even raise an eyebrow. Corruption is endemic in the whole power vertical, from traffic policeman to government minister. That is why there was no public outcry at ex-Premier Yulia Tymoshenko’s seven year prison sentence. Her reputation is as stained by corruption scandals as Yanukovych’s. “

One of the major complaints of the Euromaidan is the widespread corruption in the country.

Couldn’t find a similar breakdown here in the Czech Republic, but I do know from observation that Prague - the capital - is certainly the most expensive area to live in. A studio, like the one I rent for $236/month (the price I pay includes all utilities) is about $491/month (not including utilities, which is an extra $120/month) for a similar-sized studio outside the Prague downtown core, and about $550/month ( + $120/month utilities) in Prague 1 and 2, so basically, an apartment is a good deal more expensive in Prague vs. Ostrava.

Everything else is pretty much the same, food, transport, etc.

Bulgaria has not been getting much press but there has been a protest movement going on there for months, even years: has to do with an odd combination of the lowest wages and the highest electreicity prices in Europe, along with some enormous bonuses paid to the people who “regulate” the energy sector…

Yes, well rents are always higher in big cities.

Still, I simply don’t think too many “world leaders” are looking at the dissatisfaction, misery, and cost of living for the majority of people in the world. Trickle down isn’t working anywhere and it never will. It simply leaves behind the disaffected, impoverishment and failure.

This is the most important world wide problem we’re facing today, and it’s everywhere. It’s not your old “colonialism” or “imperialism”, it’s an entirely new phenomenon in which capitalists everywhere are driving down wages and people are scrambling to live.

For instance, migrant workers from Moldova and Belarus go into Ukraine to work on farms, as domestics, etc, while Ukrainians go out to EU countries to get a better wage, and that’s a situation happening everywhere. Because of globalization, people are not settled and in self-contained, self-sustaining countries anymore; you simply can’t make any money unless you’re willing to relocate. For most people, that’s impossible or simply not feasible.

Yep. My (still) stranded daughter also told of several fires among the cars stuck in Birmingham. I’m guessing that many of them might be cars that had pulled into high vegetation on the roadsides, then dried and ignited the weeds via their catalytic converters. Army regs prohibited vehicles with cat converters in ammunition storage areas for that reason.

Have wages changed very much over the years, actually? I remember in 1975 when I was attending comm college, an acquaintance had taken 2 yrs of computer programming and landed a job making $9500/yr. I almost regretted taking college transfer courses since I was only making about$40/wk PT, at $2.10/hr min wage in the admissions office. $9500/yr seemed like a fortune.

I converted those wages into 2014 amounts, and got $42,658 for the $9500, and $9.42/hr for the $2.10 in inflated dollars. Inflation was an average 3.93% and total inflation was 349% during that period.

What does an inexperienced programmer w/2 yrs of schooling start out these days? Anyone know? I went to work as a legal secy later that year and made $150/wk, with bonuses, iirc; that would have been $7800/yr, and the avg LS salary in Charlotte today is $28K, but adjusted for inflation mine would have been $35K. In checking ads, it seems corporate type LS make the most money, not those toiling away in criminal defense or civil practices. I’ve work for both and hated corporate—you learn much more working for individuals or small practices and have more responsibilities. We used to joke about corp law being “factories” In fact, some larger practices gave secys a “clothing allowance” because they wanted them dressing a certain way. In 1993, I was making $36K/yr as a paralegal, including bonuses; today I would be making $59K, adjusted for inflation.

Wages seem to be all over the place, though.

The guy sitting in the cubicle right across from me would know—he is a new hire and this is his first job. But it would be rude (not to mention against policy) to ask.

CNN says it’s about $55K, but in Detroit it’s probably lower since we have a lower COL.

I was making $50K 3 years ago. I had been unemployed for a couple of years and I took whatever I could get JUST TO GET BACK IN THE GAME.

Now I am making in the high 5 figures. Someone with my skills & experience could be making in the 6 figures if I was more aggressive about it, but I enjoy my job and my co-workers.

Well, adjusted for inflation, minimum wage should be at least $9.42 right now. And the Rs don’t want to raise it above $7.25/hr? You know they’ll fight it tooth and nail, even though it hasn’t gone up since 2009.

My mahuteneste is a big balabusta and entertains large groups of guests, so she has a big house and always has a lot of food available, and plenty of blankets and guest beds.

Meanwhile my son is up in Huntsville. They didn’t get the snow and ice, but the pipes in the house burst.

Lousy about the pipes—we really don’t build for severe winters, just as you don’t find universal A/C in the North.

US economy grew at 3.2 percent rate in Q4

hosted.ap.org

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy grew at a 3.2 percent annual rate in the October-December quarter on the strength of the strongest consumer spending in three years, an encouraging sign for 2014.

“The fourth-quarter increase followed a 4.1 percent growth rate in the July-September quarter, when the economy was boosted by a buildup in business stockpiles.

“The Commerce Department says that for 2013 as a whole, the economy grew a tepid 1.9 percent, below the 2.8 percent increase in 2012. Growth was held back last year by higher federal taxes and government spending cuts.”

OK I checked your links and I am satisfied that what I am making is typical for the industry here in MI, and I’m not making significantly less than my male co-workers.

I see that Sharepoint is a hot skill to have, I keep getting calls about it. They are offering $70/hr for Sharepoint developers in NYC and DC but I guess you’d need to make something like that just because of the COL in those places.

Myself? I believe it’s the same mindset that led to the kamikazes, a code of honour known as bushido. Like all ethical codes it can be twisted to serve the ends of its adherents. It can be used as an excuse rather than a guideline.

Which is what is happening in this case. Rather than admit they fucked up big time they’re hiding behind a cloak of giri.

OK, so even if the minimum wage got raised to $10/hr, a lot of the raise would get eaten up by inflation anyway, right?

$7.25/hr should already be $8.04, since inflation is rather low. However, that’s just treading water, it’s not getting ahead by any means.

A raise to $10.10 would even kick some people off food stamps, Medicaid, etc, depending on the number of dependents and where they were located, although many would still be living in poverty. That’s an extra $2.85/hr, or $114/wk if you got 40 hrs (which really, most don’t). Still, that amount of money would make a big difference in people’s lives. A FT worker would increase his or her’s family income by $6K/yr. That could mean a rent payment for some. A person working for $7.25 FT is making $15,080/yr.

Oscars strip a nomination from a song in a movie, and the Washington Times tries to spin this as somehow being an anti-Christian move, since the movie was Christian themed.

Let’s just ignore that the film’s composer took advantage of his position to improperly sway other voters. Or that the film was so obscure in the first place that it was a head-turner when initially announced as a nominee.

Alone Yet Not Alone, the theme song from a little-seen film with the same title, was the headscratcher of nominations morning two weeks ago. Few had heard of it before it secured a coveted place among the top five movie songs of the year.

Now it’s out of the race completely as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rules that its composer, a former governor of the music branch and current member of its executive committee, took advantage of his leadership position to improperly lobby fellow members of the branch.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Clark Collis after the nominations, Bruce Broughton acknowledged that he urged the members of his branch to consider the song, but insisted he had done nothing wrong.

“What happens is that the music branch of the Academy puts all the songs on a disc and I was concerned that this song would be really easy to overlook. So, yeah, I wrote some people and said, ‘Could you just take a look.’ That was literally the extent of the campaigning. I received in the mail songs from other films that were pressed and recorded CDs. We didn’t do anything like that at all.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn’t think his actions were so innocent. In a meeting of its Governors Board on Tuesday night, the panel voted to rescind the Original Song nod for Alone Yet Not Alone — one of the few times in history the Oscars organization has yanked one of its nominations.

I’m frankly surprised we don’t have more of this kind of move, whether for the Oscars or other awards shows.

The HS my granddaughter attended allowed the local Pepsi franchise to put machines in the lobby and also gave a contract to a local pizza restaurant and had a kiosk for burgers right there in the cafeteria, too; of course, it was more expensive. Hardly any of the kids ate the regular food. It wasn’t as though these were poor kids, either; there was an upper income neighborhood it served and some of the kids actually drove expensive late model autos, BMWs, Mustangs, etc.

Yes, and I think this is rather uncommon, honestly, and German society deserves a lot of Kudos for acknowledging it. Try to get the Turks to acknowledge the Armenian genocide, or many an American to acknowledge the evil of slavery or the Indian Wars.

Ukraine: Police ‘attack wrong protesters’

Ukrainian riot police have allegedly beaten up a busload of government supporters, after mistaking them for opposition activists.

A coach carrying pro-government demonstrators was stopped just outside Kiev and boarded by riot police, according to anti-government activist Dmitriy Belotserkovets. Despite the passengers shouting “we’re on the same side as you”, police proceeded to beat them up, he said.

Speaking to Russian news website Novy Region, Belotserkovets said the coach was attacked because its number plates were from western Ukraine, where many anti-government protesters have travelled from. The group was in fact from the Crimean city of Sevastopol.

Realising their mistake, the police allowed the bloodied demonstrators to continue on its way, Belotserkovets said.

I see there was a bit of bad blood going on last night here at LGF. I visit a few sports-related forums and I notice the last few days the snark is way up. Must be a full internet moon, or a bunch of folks showing theirs.

Outside that…morning. Looking for Columbus to hit 32° today. Hooray! Or, is that HooRaw?!

Just loaded a new anti-virus program too…so we’ll see how that goes. It can’t be any worse than the old one I was running that was taken over by Symantec and turned my machines (especially this XP one) into muck. I went with Bitdefender as it seemed to overall rate pretty well on an average of all the ratings sites. It seemed to be in the top 4 or 5 just about everywhere, and number 1 at a few too.

By the way…is the PC Magazine and their web site owned by Symantec?

Figure 35 hours a week per employee - a single employee getting a $1 bump would be $35 (before taxes).

A business that has say 20 employees would have to pay $700 more a week to employees. Over the course of a year, that’d be $36,400.

Some businesses may operate with razor thin margins, but if you’re that close to the margins that a $1 increase in the minimum wage, then you’re doing something wrong.

Mind you hiring and training new employees aren’t without costs as well - and if you have a higher wage, those people may be more willing to stick around and take more pride in their work, meaning higher efficiency and better work product.

Yes. The Ottoman empire collapse surely. But there have been other empires go down and those too caused some bad times, but eventually some form of order did manage to come out of it. In the Middle East that hasn’t been the case.

So, was any progress or recovery from the Ottoman control prevented by the influences of Europeans so they could apply their puppetry, or was it a mix of the Europeans versus the tribal and religious all fighting over everything that there was never any real cooperation and it has gone like that all these years?

And that begs the question, who is the most responsible, and would anything change if let’s say, the outside influences go away. If the Europeans, US. UN, the Russians, the Chinese and others step away would the tribes and religious factions left ever work it out?

At least at that point it would be a chance for the people of the region to do it without outside backing and influence. But even that seems like it wouldn’t work. Or, is that what needs to be done, but it will take time to work out the order?

And would the other countries and UN ever allow it, because that may mean some nasty waring in places like Israel? I can’t see that happening. So, it the region screwed forever?

Also, my library card has expired and I need to get that updated. Been too busy to re-register. Too much ‘net!

I’d say it was a mix of European interference combined with tribal/sectarian divisions that paved the way to what we’re seeing now. As to what can be done going forward, that’s a good question.

The Ottoman Empire finally collapsed less than a century ago, and that’s pretty recent, historically speaking. It took a long time for Europe to sort its self out after the collapse of the Roman Empire; the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages, etc.

The ME isn’t screwed forever - it’ll take awhile, but eventually, they’ll sort it out. Who knows? Maybe the Iranians or a combination of the Iranians and the Turks will be the masters of the region over the course of time. The Turks make no secret of their ambitions, which is essentially a re-imagined Ottoman Empire, but this time, as a confederation, like the European Union.

Looking that far ahead is above my pay grade. :)

Yes, we need A LOT more of economic developments like this if there’s ever to be a lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Get people working together, and suddenly they seem rather human, just like you. Also, you’re probably not as likely to kill people who are your customers and creditors and suppliers.

The economic integration between the US and China is one reason why I don’t think World War III will ever erupt between us. Also, the EU paved the way for a continent that loved going to war to enter a period of unprecedented peace.

re: #356 Dr Lizardo

A lot depends on what you consider the “Golden Age” for that region, or at least a time when the area would be considered stable and progressive (or at least tolerant) in outlook, and pro-active towards developing the arts, architecture, and expansion of knowledge.

en.wikipedia.org
(If you go by the Arab Caliphate it potentially ended in the 1200s.)

en.wikipedia.org(metaphor)
(With the Ottomans it was probably the 16th century.)

Per the reason for collapse you can probably get a lot of argument about that. Loss of economic power, external threats, etc. I also saw a remark that you can’t really connect scientific/cultural progress to a religion, but it’s that a particular government/society chooses to pursue that course at that time and sort of brings the religion along with it.

I should know better by now than to read anything my cousin recommends, anyone with two framed pictures of Reagan hung in his house should not be trusted when it comes to reading recommendations.

His latest “you have to read this” is a thin volume published by an ex-Air Force Colonel that supposedly gives inside details into the special forces operations.

My major problem with this “groundbreaking book that witnesses and takes part in some of the most significant military events in U.S. history!” Is that it was written in the third person by what you would have to assume to be a teenager who insists upon calling himself “The Hawk!”

“The Hawk” was a desk jockey who possibly if he is to be believed worked on tasking the air missions to transport and support the special forces operations in multiple theaters of war from Vietnam to Afghanistan (a very old Hawk?).

The main subject of the narrative which one has to assume is a composite character is a special forces operator (The Raven!) who was already 23 when wounded and given the Distinguished Service Cross (anonymously, of course) in Laos during the Vietnam war.

According to the book 46 years later the same guy (The Raven!) is still leading ground missions in Afghanistan…

Not only that but I think that “The Hawk” is seriously interested in having babies fathered by “The Raven.”

I didn’t know who he was but the first minute I laid eyes on him I knew he was someone unique. Dressed in a black jumpsuit, black assault boots and an American flag attached with velcro to his sleeve, he stood on top of a berm overlooking an open field that stretched before him. His hair was dark and long, in concert with the relaxed grooming standards popular at the time, but it was his face that was so remarkable. He had the most striking blue eyes I had ever seen, like the deep blue of the Mediterranean sea….

etc, etc…blah, blah, blah…

Sigh…if this is the kind of crap rightwingers read then no wonder they are so effing stupid. I mean do the math, the author was only a baby during Nam and there is no way “The Raven” was even commanding much less leading a special forces team in Afghanistan at 69+ years old.

Arrrgh, asking me to read this shit goes way beyond simple “suspension of disbelief” and deep into “you’ll need a lobotomy to enjoy this” territory. :(

They probably couldn’t afford to buy oil and at any rate, were probably using some kind of old oil heater. See the tank on the side of the house? And it’s a small house for 11 people. No mining anymore and people are extremely poor with nothing to replace it.

re: #366 Charles Johnson

The constant flood of overt racism from today’s right is bad enough, but the *whining* when they’re called out on it is insufferable.

I swear all of this is calculated.

They always - ALWAYS - do this seemingly to send a message to that funky base they play too.

And as I always ask and wonder, how do they think it helps them in anyway? No one in that party can be that stupid to do and say the stupid things they do. So, I still say they think it plays to the base and it will help them in the future somehow. How?

The only thing they do to try to bring in new people is pay lip service with stuff like Reince Priebus saying they are working to be a more open and inclusive party, and they do not have a war against women, etc.

Blow it up! There apparently is no one in that party capable of real political strategy.

Or, the worst fear…they are all driven by ALEC, the Kochs and other big business types and regular voters no longer count and they do not care about the presidency. And why wouldn’t they care about the presidency? Maybe they think with all of their dollars, gerrymandering and selling to the base in those gerrymandered districts they can keep the house and get the senate and can continue to block and democratic president.

I think he’s testing the waters to see how much he can get away with. I don’t think there’s much danger of international action.

Unfortunately there can’t be any international action, meaning troops on the ground, without breaking the law. A nation’s sovereignty is sacrosanct. Syria is still an independent nation, and Assad is its leader.

Sucks, but the alternative is worse. You have no idea how relieved I am that the U.S. invasion of Iraq was not used as an excuse by some nations to invade other countries. We could easily have slid back to the days before WWI, when nations tried to improve their security through alliances like The Central Powers and the Étente Cordiale did. Then something would happen, like an Austrian Arch-Duke being assassinated in Serbia, and the dominoes start to fall. This time around all the major powers will have WMD.

We’ve come a long way, and it wouldn’t be a good idea to go back.

re: #353 Kragar

Responding to a caller who warned that “there’s a black cloud over our national capital” that is bringing down America, Rios said that there is a “spiritual” element to the political battle: “I do think what we’re facing here is otherworldly, there is a supernatural power to this president that I can’t—that I think most of us have picked up, those of us who believe in God and believe that there are other forces at work here, but we don’t know what God’s mind is on this.”

Hey, Ms. Rios, since you “don’t know what God’s mind is on this” why not try entertaining the idea that maybe God is behind the “supernatural power to this president”?

Oh, wait. That would mean that maybe, just possibly, you’re on the wrong side.

Huh.

No, I got it: God’s behind Obama, because Antichrist Prophecy Benghazi Arugula Alinsky. (Fixed that for you.)
