Good.

I still want to know what Trump told Graham on that private golf outing shortly after Trump was elected. Overnight Graham went from an attack dog to one of Trump’s most devoted parishioners.

I think the new convention format is about as good as we’re going to get until some new ideas come forward. Lots of good speeches and personal stories. I’m sure the usual suspects will pick it to pieces, but fuck them, there’s no way they can do better.

I even liked the way that Bernie’s intensity built when basically telling his stubborn followers to get over themselves. If he would have spoken for two more minutes, he would have told then “NOW DON’T FUCK THIS UP!”

Sure the GOP techs were watching in an attempt to learn how it should be done. I found the format fabulous. Much preferred it to the razzmatazz of previous elections.

Michelle’s speech was amazing. The rest of the night was good but it felt much more like an infomercial than I remember most other conventions feeling like. It was probably the lack of an audience for the speeches. And multiple locations. Still… I hope they continue to pound on the lack of leadership from trump. I think it’s a line of attack that will work well with what few undecided voters are out there… and it’ll drive trump crazy

4 Copy Editors Killed In Ongoing AP Style, Chicago Manual Gang Violence (Goes to The Onion)

NEW YORK—Law enforcement officials confirmed Friday that four more copy editors were killed this week amid ongoing violence between two rival gangs divided by their loyalties to the The Associated Press Stylebook and The Chicago Manual Of Style. “At this time we have reason to believe the killings were gang-related and carried out by adherents of both the AP and Chicago styles, part of a vicious, bloody feud to establish control over the grammar and usage guidelines governing American English,” said FBI spokesman Paul Holstein, showing reporters graffiti tags in which the word “anti-social” had been corrected to read “antisocial.” “The deadly territory dispute between these two organizations, as well as the notorious MLA Handbook gang, has claimed the lives of more than 63 publishing professionals this year alone.” Officials also stated that an innocent 35-year-old passerby who found himself caught up in a long-winded dispute over use of the serial, or Oxford, comma had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Looks like Ford, Honda, VW, BMW and Volvo have obliquely told Trump to shove it.

California on Monday finalized a legal settlement with five of the world’s largest automakers that binds them to comply with its stringent state-level fuel efficiency standards that would cut down on climate-warming tailpipe emissions.

Monday’s agreement adds legal teeth to a deal that California and four of the companies outlined in principle last summer, and it comes as a rejection of President Trump’s new, looser federal rules on fuel economy, which would allow more pollution into the atmosphere.

Mr. Trump was blindsided last summer when the companies — Ford, Honda, BMW and Volkswagen — announced that they had reached a secret deal with California to comply with that state’s standards, even as the Trump administration was working to roll back Obama-era rules on fuel economy. A fifth company, Volvo, said in March that it intended to join the agreement and is part of the legal settlement that was finalized on Monday.

After last summer’s announcement, Mr. Trump escalated his legal and rhetorical attacks on California. He accelerated the release of a rule to revoke California’s legal authority to set its own state-level standards, writing on Twitter that doing so would “produce far less expensive cars for the consumer, while at the same time making the cars substantially SAFER.” His administration dismissed the California deal as a meaningless “voluntary stunt.”

But with the publication of Monday’s legal agreement, the “stunt” is no longer voluntary.

For all of Trump’s “accomplishments,” it seems like Repubs don’t want to bring in people to talk about those. No business owners to tell folks about how awesome the Trump Tax Cuts have been for job creation, no generals to talk about how they couldn’t have “defeated” ISIS without Trump’s support, no prominent minority leaders to tell folks about how he’s done such great things for their communities (i.e. “lowest unemployment evah!!!”), etc, etc.

They’ve gone all in on social grievances, which seems less about trying to win voters over than it does about driving up as much enthusiasm in their own ranks as possible.

Heard the comparison earlier today between this election and the ‘80. And I can certainly see the parallels: Unpopular incumbent facing off against a popular challenger, the latter bringing on a VP pick who not only faced off against him during the primaries but also gave him a hard time during such, a major national crisis that is dragging down any “accomplishments,” and now contrasting conventions between a challenger criticizing the current administration for being total fuck-ups…and the current admin begging for a do-over.

The only real difference? Carter wasn’t so desperate that he thought he could sabotage the postal service in an effort to keep Reagan from winning.

‘Trump 2020′ designed parking spaces vandalized at Lubbock-Cooper High School in Texas

For the past four years at Lubbock-Cooper High School, students are allowed to decorate and paint their reserved parking spots before the school year begins. This year is no different.

One group of students purchased paint and decorated their connecting parking spots to spell out ‘TRUMP 2020.′

Lubbock-Cooper High School parking spaces vandalized. School officials will seek to prosecute any individual responsible for destroying or defacing school property.

Overnight their parking spaces were vandalized. Officials with Lubbock-Cooper High School say the district will seek to prosecute any individual responsible for destroying or defacing school property. There were at least 11 spots were vandalized. All of them had a Trump theme. At least one Trump-themed spot was not vandalized.

A parent of one of the students said, “My son and several of his friends spent over $750 painting their parking spots. They spent eight hours creating this. Their spaces have been completely vandalized and all boys have been threatened.”

And since their endgame move is probably likely to be kicking the table over, anyway, it doesn’t matter. You’re right that to “normal” voters, a national Convention (however staged) showcasing freakshows like Sandmann or the McCloskeys is going to be offputting, but then again, the Trump Republicans don’t seem to give much of any shits about any voting bloc but their hardcore, fearful, hate-driven “base”. And getting that “base” to turn out in near-unanimous numbers is the only real strategy left to them. And they will stoke any and every fear, hate, resentment and paranoia they can to achieve it.

How is that even close to being a winning strategy? Their base is like 30% of voters.

I have too say that the way this is playing out the RNConvention is going to be wildly amusing in a plane crashes into a train wrecked kinda way.

Trump’s apparently pardoned Susan B. Anthony.

Am I supposed to be moved by this? Am I going to think that this sways anyone anywhere to vote for Trump? It’s a purely hack move because we know that the symbolism of pardoning Anthony is more than offset by Trump’s refusal to change the $20 bill that was scheduled to honor Harriet Tubman. He’s keeping the racist slaver and genocidal Andrew Jackson on the $20.

Tubman was not only an abolitionist and former enslaved woman, but she became a suffragist as well.

Trump thinks pardoning Anthony somehow will curry favor with white suburbans. Doubt many will know who Anthony was (even as she was honored with a $1 coin).

But I also think it is a setup for Trump to pardon Stone. Stone has cut bait on his appeal, which would suggest that he’s about to get a pardon or commutation from Trump. It’s corruption in plain sight.

in general it’s a question of how the gator winds up wherever it’s finally discovered
ie a lake or sump that’s got no inflow or outflow
it’s not gonna walk the streets (or get very far if it did)
so there likely has to be a flowing waterway nearby - a canal likely
and it still has to decide to leave the water and cross lawns, then maybe roads, etc.
and that’s before fences and other obstructions come into play

plus, in our case, i dont think the birds are gonna pass on our location to the reptile population. they’ve got an exclusive right now.

I wonder if this is the real reason they’re holding up the $1200 stimulus payment. Last time they tossed these crumbs to the peasants someone realized that $1200 was the estimated cost of building a guillotine. Plans and cost estimates went viral.

True story:
My sister has a good friend who emigrated from the Soviet Union 40 years ago. After receiving the stimulus check this spring, the friend told my sister Obama never would have given this money. And why not? Because he wasn’t a billionaire who could distribute his own funds to help struggling Americans!

Clearly some people are delusional enough to believe that the letter Trump sent (and his signature on the check for those who received a check) meant that the money was Trump’s. This is reason #1000050 why we cannot have nice things.

Well, there’s the answer right there: you can take the Russian out of the Rodina, etc….

Maybe in Russia, you really DO have to rely on the whim/largesse of deep-pocketed billionaires to distribute economic stimulus on a national level: fortunately (despite some peoples’ delusions) we don’t HAVE to.

Jill Biden is finally ready to be first lady. Can she help her husband beat Trump? WaPo

How they met (in re. NY Post):

Jill was not a professional model like Melania Trump, but she did pose for local advertisements shot by a photographer friend, one of which caught the eye of 32-year-old first-term Sen. Joe Biden as he walked through the Wilmington airport in 1975.
As it turned out, his brother Frank knew Jill and gave Joe her number. The rest is history, which the Bidens have written themselves in their many books: Jill was about nine years younger, a tough-cookie “Philly girl,” the oldest of five girls who had once punched a bully in the face for throwing worms on one of her sisters. He was a widower who had lost his wife in a 1972 car crash that also killed his baby daughter and badly injured his young sons. Jill and Joe’s romance was a whirlwind, but it took five marriage proposals before she said yes; she’d been married and divorced young (“to a tall ex-football player who drove a fast yellow Camero,” she wrote in her 2019 memoir, “Where the Light Enters”) and she wanted to make sure, for the sake of Beau and Hunter, that this wouldn’t end in another divorce. She raised the boys, and they call her Mom.

Having always had beagles and labs, little Mela has really wormed (probably a poor choice of words talking about pups) her way into my heart. She hears my utensils clinking at noon and waddles in my office.

The one serious “accomplishment” that Trump still has going for him — and one that appeals especially to many who are retired or near retirement and are at least middle class — is the still booming stock market. Most people these days don’t get traditional pensions but receive funds from 401(k)s. Powell seems to be doing a magnificent job at maintaining the market.

The question is: how, in the light of the disastrous economy, is the market faring so well? Is it just that interest rates are so low there is nowhere else to put one’s investments? Is it that companies that were doing well before the pandemic are still doing well, thanks to infusions from the government or (in the case of companies like Amazon and Zoom) actually making a fortune because of the needs they serve during this catastrophe? Is it just that the companies that are failing are those that are smaller businesses that are not part of the stock indices? A combination of high markets and fears of violence in the streets could indeed be Trump’s “legitimate” path to victory this November.

Those people who claim to represent BLM and who support looting are working either knowingly or unwittingly to help Trump get re-elected. As a member of the FB group “Women’s March Chicago”, I have seen posters who support these activities. Several of us engage with them but they persist. Some of them want a real revolution, thinking that they will be the ones victorious — that the whole system needs to be thrown out. They don’t understand in that scenario the fascists will be the ones emerging victorious and there will be no coming back.

Stuart who?

Stuart D. Baker has been fired from the Adult Swim animated series “Squidbillies” after posting comments about Dolly Parton and the Black Lives Matter movement on social media.

Baker, who performs under the name Unknown Hinson, posted on his Facebook profile late last week about Dolly Parton voicing her support for the Black Lives Matter movement. In doing so, he referred to Parton as a “freak titted, old Southern bimbo” and a “slut.” In another post, he wrote “HAVE FUN [sic] forsaking your own race, culture, and heritage.”

Guess he can really start living that part, now….

Lost hiker reportedly survived 14 days in New Mexico woods
By AP • 1 hour ago

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say a hiker has survived after being stranded in a forest near Santa Fe for 14 days.

KRQE-TV reports the lost hiker was rescued Sunday after he called out to another hiker on the Windsor Trail. Santa Fe firefighters arrived within the hour armed with the exact GPS location of the hiker on Saturday but he wasn’t located until the next day.

Santa Fe Fire Department Captain Nathan Garcia says the lost hiker is in his 50s and suffers from chronic back pain and hurt it again while out hiking. His name was not released.

I think the bolded part indicates tricky terrain, not slow firefighters.

Based on the clip that lawhawk posted, it certainly seems that Anderson Cooper was doing a great job of discrediting the MyPillow guy and his endorsement of a product that he is promoting to help his personal wealth. As long as the interviewer has done their homework, it can be educational to see how these Trumpsters and other conmen have no credibility underlying their assertions.

also… if your business is the kind that people can work at home, all the work is being done and you have the usual receivables, but you don’t have to run a lunchroom or pay a daily cleaning crew and there’s no business travel or meals out on your expenses.

If your office does the kind of business that they can’t work at home… you have no payroll.

re: #260 dangerman

in general it’s a question of how the gator winds up wherever it’s finally discovered
ie a lake or sump that’s got no inflow or outflow
it’s not gonna walk the streets (or get very far if it did)
so there likely has to be a flowing waterway nearby - a canal likely
and it still has to decide to leave the water and cross lawns, then maybe roads, etc.
and that’s before fences and other obstructions come into play

plus, in our case, i dont think the birds are gonna pass on our location to the reptile population. they’ve got an exclusive right now.

i dont know how the brain of a gator works. im just guessing one wouldnt leave the relative comfort of a water environment and go looking for a backyard unstocked pond
