We might not need to be as emotionally invested in most of the next four years, but the next presidential election determines how stable we are going to be. Switching back to the GOP will basically indicate that we’re not going to be a stable country to deal with.

We just can’t act like the past four years didn’t happen. As VP Elect Harris said echoing Rep Lewis, Democracy is fragile.

I know someone posted the percentages, but here’s how the Native American vote really helped in Arizona:

And this is great, because my coworker was complaining about Arizona voting for Biden.

Obviously I can’t expect the same thing in Alaska but I wonder if that Native American vote count signals some hope for the Alaska Senate race.

No. Completely different tribes and completely different organizing groups.

Until the electoral college vote is certified or one of the clowns in the GOP talks Clownstick into walking away with a little bit of dignity, I’m not celebrating too much.

I still see too many futures that involve a civil war or trying to escape to Canada.

Ah ok. That’s what I thought. That turnout is amazing. I knew Navajo country had been hard hit but damn.

I don’t see a civil war. We have a lot of tension in this country, but it’s not at the level of ending slavery. I would be more worried had Trump gotten reelected, because Trump and Barr were more than willing to go after political opponents and I think people would have retaliated for arresting Obama, Clinton, and Biden.

The problem i have with the internet is that there’s so much worth seeing:

21
Belafon  Nov 7, 2020 • 10:17:49pm

Edit: neither of these most likely had nothing to do with the election, but more about local things, though there were small celebrations, but I do think its pretty wild that there were celebrations at all in other countries.

I’m not surprised about native americans going super anti-Trump. There have been some truly incredible steps taken by the admin against native populations. It hasn’t gotten a lot of coverage, because native issues never do in this country, but it’s reached mortal-enemy levels.

…which is no surprise - this administration has been brutal with non-whites that fall under their direct power.

I don’t know how the Alaska populations are distributed, but with so many votes out we can dream.

re: #22 NetworkKed

It’s worth noting that not every Native American group has gone anti-Trump. There’s at least one tribe in NC that went for Trump in this election, likely tied to anti-Black sentiment.

They’re not a monolith any more than any other multi-faceted ethnic group. See, say, Cubans in FL.

Fair enough. And obviously the groups have widely assorted histories, but I’d assume some general commonality of reaction to a government inclined to act against them.

The problem is the vast geographic isolation and dispersion of the Alaskan native population…and there’s not a lot of funding to support that.

And unfortunately, nearly all of the challenges will succeed. These won’t be Trump clown-lawyers making the arguments. Instead the arguments will come from real lawyers who know how to make arguments that partisan R judges will accept.

Who would take some of these EOs to court? Doesn’t there have to be an injured party beyond “The Government is doing unconstitutional crap” while I’m a citizen? If that’s the bar, I want to take the GOP to court right now.

The Senate would be the likeliest plaintiff on the grounds that overly ambitious executive orders infringe on prerogative of Congress.

As used by Republicans it’s a shitty bad faith argument because everything from Republicans is axiomatically bad faith. But it will get them into court, and then the R judges can do their thing.

I caught something interesting that I think Biden probably knows how to use to his advantage. He can easily be seen as a working class person, folksy, and down to earth. I think it could end up being easy for him to portray the GOP as attacking working Americans by attacking him.

Tropical storm Eta is off Cuba’s southern coast, about to make another turn, to the north and then to the west.

It is a determined storm, surviving against an onslaught of cold dry air.

Probably will hit Florida twice.

We need to convene a Truth & Reconciliation commission to investigate and recommend prosecutions for the various crimes of Fuckface Von Clownstick and the Flying Monkeys of his administration. There’s no walking past this, looking forward or moving on, fuck no.

I came down the hallway earlier today, saw “Biden Wins!” on the TV and have been spiritually doing the Snoopy dance ever since. I feel like a ton of weight has been lifted from my shoulders and I’ve been nothing but laughing and smiles, as has been my wife and our kids. We have a long battle ahead of us but it’s nice to savor the moment and our tremendous win.

We’re muddling along okay here. Some health issues (not COVID so far, at least), but nothing too major. I pretend to have goals for the year but at this point it has boiled down to “finish the first draft of this damn book” and also hopefully “get Christmas presents sent off in time because we sure as fuck aren’t travelling anytime soon.”

I hope things are mostly going well for you and yours - at least as well as 2020 can go for anyone.

Sadly, yes. Now I watch movies and it’s like ‘WHERE ARE THEIR MASKS?” The health issues caused more stress here than the general pandemic stress - June was pretty much a complete wash. We’re vaguely back to functioning now, although this week has been …less productive.

re: #56 Nyet

Just looked it up and it can be requested as long as the margin is less than 0.5% so I don’t think we’re likely to hit that, unless there are a LOT more ballots that got cured and arrive from overseas.

On the other hand, the examples we have from modern recounts are that vote totals have shifted ~1k so as long as there are no shenanigans, I am not super concerned about it in this case.

The ecosystem around my house has been getting intense lately. In the past year I’ve seen a coyote in the open space behind my fence, heard a bobcat in the open space at night, had owls and hawks swoop down to try and grab my 100lb dog and at the last minute realize he’s too big to catch. The squirrel population has exploded due to volunteer oak trees in the area. The neighbors oak volunteered on my fence-line 25 years ago. We tried to get the previous two owners take it down but it is now 16” wide at the trunk and pushing the fence over. Gophers have taken over the open space and in the past 3 year invaded the yard, also we’ve had a rat explosion from the open space for the last 2 years. They like our garden veggies and the acorn meat the squirrels drop from the oak tree. There was so much food around until this week that the rats wouldn’t eat the poison bait, now that the garden is done and the squirrels have finished the acorns the rats are finally eating the bait. We had mourning doves in our trees but a cooper’s hawk killed them in our courtyard. I’ve got the tail feather of the hawk and chest down of mourning doves, and no more dove calls as forensic evidence.

I’m wondering how long until the scorpions, rattlesnakes, and mountain lions show up.

Netanyahu may be a crook (though a crook with more political “lives” than a gaggle of cats), but he ain’t stupid: he knows that Biden isn’t likely to have forgotten Bibi’s attempted sandbagging of the Iran nuclear deal back in Obama’s Admin. Or that with Trump - and his connection with the “Christian Zionist” pulpit-pimps - out of the WH, he’s lost a source of policy leverage (for now).

As usual, ME policy is going to be a brain-bending maze for the Biden Administration to have to thread…

I reckon he can keep that grift going until about mid-to-late December. Then he’ll grudgingly concede in a “Yeah, I concede, but I still think something’s fishy about all this” way and move on to something else - unless the NY AG throws the book at him, and then he’ll be ‘moving on’ to a cell in Rikers Island.

Haven’t heard anything about Hunter Biden’s laptop(s) since Monday.

Sort of like how we never heard anything more about the migrant caravans after election day in 2018.

Sort of like how we didn’t hear any more about Anthony Weiner’s laptop after election day in 2016.

Sort of like how we didn’t hear any more about Ebola after election day in 2014.

Sort of like…

yeah - like this ever would have happened

Trump offered to cut his campaign a check heading into the final week of the race. His advisers told him it wasn’t necessary — the campaign had enough resources. While people close to the president defended the decision, it ensured he would be overwhelmed by Biden on the air as voters headed to the polls.

Whatever Biden does as president, this will be a huge part of his legacy:

Whatever Joe Biden does as president, a big part of his historical legacy will be having been the white guy there while history was made, first as President Obama’s vice president and then through his choice of Harris as vice president. And for all Biden’s mixed past record on both race and gender—remember, Harris herself hit him hard over his record on school segregation during a primary debate—he has leaned into that role.

That’s clearly what they are going with. A FB friend posted a link to some RW site that claimed Benford’s law has shown that the election was being stolen. The friend tagged me and several others who had mathematical backgrounds to get our feedback. I responded that I wasn’t going to waste my time with an article written by authors who don’t identify themselves making claims based on evidence that cannot be verified. In any case, I don’t really know anything about this supposed law (hint: it’s not really a law) but definitely could envision some lawyer trying to wow a Trump judge with this nonsense.

Depends on the basis for the EO, most likely. And of course, Republicans challenging the EOs will have to argue against the precedent Trump set, which’ll be fun

They will have no problem doing that. You’re going to see the Senate spend the next four years (starting Jan 20th) railing about how the executive is out of control, acting like a dictator, etc. etc. etc.

Which will also play right into their total obstruction strategy.

And the most annoying thing about it is that all of the MSM will simply play right along with it. And also blame Biden and the House for nothing getting done since it’s their fault for not collapsing like wet tissue paper to GOP demands.

Which will also mean the media will portray all attempts to bring GOP malfeasance to justice as simply “more partisan politics” as well.

People spreading this same shit also support people who were open to just making their state legislatures choose the electors. They also are okay with Republicans trying to split the EVs even in states they lose. I remember when Obama won Virginia the second time, some asshole Republicans in Richmond announced they’d introduce legislation to divide our EVs by district even though Obama won by good sized margins.

CA hasn’t finished counting votes yet. It’s just that the presidential tally is no where near close so we had that called as soon as the polls closed. This is neither new nor different than any other election.

Trump has always been, and always will be, a selfish spoiled brat. And that is why his supporters love him so much. He is what they want to be. They absolutely hate they can’t whine and scream and stiff people out of money. He says and acts exactly how they would love to act, but can’t because if they did it, they would be fired, dumped or abandoned.

I finally get it. Trump appeals to his supporters deep, unfulfilled selfishness. For decades they have long desired to tell minorities to get out, or gays to go back into the closet, or women to be more subservient to men. They’ve wanted to play golf all day while doing nothing but complain for a living. They’ve wanted to spend other people’s money like a drunken sailor and not worry about the financial consequences.

He did, and it inspired them. But that party is over. It’s back to reality and back to maturity.

Some of my RW acquaintances are still convinced Trump is going to pull it out in court and win.

Yeah, and I’m still gonna win the lottery, just as soon as I get the courts to agree that my failure to pick the correct numbers doesn’t mean anything because I declared my victory before the drawing began.

I know someone posted the percentages, but here’s how the Native American vote really helped in Arizona:

And this is great, because my coworker was complaining about Arizona voting for Biden.

Speaking at a meeting of Navajo elders and taking it as an occasion to rail against “Princess Pocahontas” was a truly amazing move on Trump’s part. You could see the Navajo delegates trying to hide their discomfort and cringing.

This fucker is going to pull out all the stops all the way till the end to put himself above democracy. our system really isn’t built to respond to this.

Will Pence sign off on the EC vote? I’m sure he’ll be pressured not to. Does the system depend on his compliance?

AFAICT the official receipt of the EC votes by the VP’s office is just a formality: Pence can accept them, trash them, wipe his ass with them; machts nicht: the (legal) results aren’t dependent on any one person.

re: #228 NetworkKed

Chuck is vaguely right, in the wrong ways as usual. The thing he’s noticing is the third party vote was a lot smaller, but it went in both directions depending on the state, it looks to me. But GA and AZ swung by more than the 3rd party.

Yeah, I agree: maybe on pure math, but the non-R/D vote four years ago was 5.6% of the total: and on lower aggregate numbers: I don’t think we’ll be seeing that this time round.

The thing is that… they sort of have to be (every bit as narcissistic and inept I mean).

Running fascist candidates the way they have is like an athlete taking steroids. Yeah they might temporarily juice your muscles (turnout) but they get your base addicted to them. I don’t think the GOP base is ever going to accept a candidate who won’t scream the quiet part out loud ever again.

Barring a major sea change/civil war, whoever wins the 2024 GOP Primary will have to be an open Q supporter or whatever brand alphabet soup craziness they’ve come up with by then (I hope it’s X because X sounds so much more awesome).

TLDR: Why vote for a cold clinical schemer like O’Brien when could support some obnoxious loon to own the libs instead?

re: #178 JC1

Given that the presidential pardon power is pretty much unlimited, Trump can pardon himself. Of course that would mean that he’d have to admit that he crimed.

I very much doubt this. The idea that the president is above the law is not one that even a bunch of originalists are going to support, because they would most definitely find nothing in favor of it in the Federalist or elsewhere. The president cannot pardon himself for crimes. He also cannot resign and let Pence be president for a day in order to pardon him, because that would be quid pro quo, and is definitely a crime.

I don’t know that it matters. I think there is a good chance he won’t face federal charges because “we need to come together and move on.” Also, indicting a former president is generally not a good look.
But. There’s always NY which involves things unrelated to his presidency and a federal pardon might actually increase the perception of legitimacy for those state charges.

There’s a Daily Beast article on Russia’s reaction to Trump’s loss. A good deal of it describes how they are making use of his treasonous attacks on American democracy:

Russian state media repeatedly aired Donald Trump’s notoriously undemocratic press conference, wherein he baselessly trashed and undermined his own country’s elections, describing the democratic process as unclean, untrustworthy and mired in fraud.
[…]
Discrediting the crown jewel of Western democracy has always been one of Russia’s top priorities—and while he failed to come through on other fronts, Trump delivered a parting gift above and beyond the Kremlin’s wildest dreams.

re: #298 steve_davis

I very much doubt this. The idea that the president is above the law is not one that even a bunch of originalists are going to support, because they would most definitely find nothing in favor of it in the Federalist or elsewhere. The president cannot pardon himself for crimes. He also cannot resign and let Pence be president for a day in order to pardon him, because that would be quid pro quo, and is definitely a crime.

agree on the first part

the second part is uncharted waters
(ianal)
from my reading, pence pardoning trump is much thornier.
apparently the pardon could stand (unless there was a threat or extortion etc).
but pence could be in a world of legal trouble if there was an agreement or something construed as a bribe

note ford’s preemptive pardon of nixon was never challenged.
doesn’t necessarily make it precedent, or legal. just no one bothered.

WHAT?

Jeopardy answers must be given in the form of a question. For ex:

” I’ll take Game Show Hosts for two-hundred, Alex. “

This man was Alex Trebek’s predecessor as host of Jeopardy.
“Who is Art Fleming?”
That is correct.

Shame that.

There’s a Daily Beast article on Russia’s reaction to Trump’s loss. A good deal of it describes how they are making use of his treasonous attacks on American democracy:

Yeah, ok, guy who loses thinks everybody else cheated.

What Russia and the rest of the world also saw was the US voting out its own right wing corrupt autocrat, and that gives people hope.

Part of the problem with Russia and the Mueller Report is some of the fuckery was legally or criminally untested or with no clear law against. That should be addressed and shored up. An investigation should be pursued even if charges or guilt are not assigned.

Mueller made that very clear when he implored us to read the Report. Our legal system needs to catch up with real life and the Information Age.

Can a president pardon himself for crimes he hasn’t even been charged with yet?

somebody pointed out in a previous thread that Ford did actually pardon Nixon for crimes that were known, and those he’d committed that weren’t yet known, or words to that effect. I can’t see the supreme court saying the president has the power to grant himself blanket protection from the law against any crimes he may choose to commit in the future.

No, “you” will not find a treatment/cure for this damned COVID-19. Partly because it’s not countries that find things like that, it’s scientists, mostly because there are no “cures” for viral disease.

But that’s irrelevant. America will be respected again when it stops behaving like a dick.

We don’t need or want American to start thinking it’s “special” or “exceptional” again. We want a friend, not a boss.

Oh my, I am actually on the current thread for the first time in several days! Took awhile to catch up, with the tidal wave of news. GOOD news, most of it. A relief to be able to breathe deep, a pleasant change to see daybreak ahead. Yeah, yeah, we all know we’ve got a long, steep mountain ahead; a stiff hike even to get back to where we were in November 2016, much less to gain altitude. But it sure helps to feel like we’re on the right trail, with a leader who knows how to read a map (and might even, y’know, ask for directions… and listen to the answers ;) ).

Not hanging my hopes on just one political ticket. I really love both Joe and Kamala, mind you, they don’t need to have superpowers to get my respect. The greatest thing about this win is the team they have going and the team they’ll be able to assemble for support: knowledgeable people interested in actual governance who value competence. Remember that? It’s been a long, long time.

Soooo much credit to the people who put in the work to make this happen, hanging lit on doorknobs, writing postcards, making calls (h/t JoeB!), entering and analyzing data. Loud call out to Stacey Abrams and her team (donations on the way), devout hopes that the Dem leadership has the sense to put her in charge of the preparation for 2022. The slog starts again tomorrow, today I’m just savoring. (Okay, and catching up on laundry now that I have a new washer/dryer stack in place and ready to go after the od one bit the big one.)

Also enjoying the Lizard reunions as everyone pops back in to celebrate!

Babushka, love the pics! Best wishes to your own 46, that’s a grand coincidence that will probably be a family legend for years to come. Michele, we’ll take pics from you too, hint hint :)

Klys, nice to see you! Wincing sympathy on the med issues, I know how that particular problem goes. Best of luck to the rest of NaNoWriMo, and yeah, no one should expect to make their word count during an historical election. Would love to see the results.

Has anyone heard from Sea Mexican? Would be interested to get the Puerto Rican perspective, if there’s a chance between storms.

Cheers, all!
