It is 1:04 am in Kyiv, and sunrise is at 6:58am, a little less than 6 hours from now. If Russia is attacking today, it should begin soon.

This got cl’ed. An amendment has been filed to the “Don’t say gay” bill in Florida to require schools to out LGBTQ+ students to abusive, homophobic parents, in the hopes they will be abused, killed or at least abandoned.

Because who cares about a few rats around when you don’t have to worry about pesky regulations?

Daughter fishspawn in the kitchen, popping popcorn. Suddenly, she turns around and says, “Oh my gosh. Mom, come over here real quick. I have never seen this animal before.” Curiosity sufficiently aroused, Mrs. Fish and I wander over to the kitchen, where we have a sliding door that opens onto the deck. Lo and behold, there be a possum, eating from our cat’s food dish. Mrs. Fish took a picture of it and shooed it away; it was shaking, which made her suspect it may be sick.

I did suggest that he might be nervous (of being close to the house, or of the cat sitting literally feet away), or perhaps he was just really bloody hungry. She maintains that, possums being nocturnal animals, one being out in the day is a sure sign of illness.

They have very sharp teeth. I used to be a science museum docent in college (for elementary school tours) and we had a possum. I wore heavy leather gloves when I held her and she would loop her tail around me and was very friendly. But man, those teeth were a fright.

50!!!

Opossums have 50 sharp teeth in their mouths, which is more teeth than any other mammal in the U.S. If a predator approaches, they’ll open their mouths nice and wide to show those teeth off, hoping to scare that predator away!

Despite the earlier tweet thread claiming the Russian troops are in the throes of the pandemic, it would be surprising if these forces are truly disabled by COVID-19. They are not in the age group to suffer widespread serious illness and most of them probably recovered recently (a month ago or so) from a bout with omicron. I’m sure they are healthy enough to mount a serious attack, unless Putin has reconsidered his strategy.

Those guys and their caravan traversing I-40 are going to run into some rough weather starting right about now…first of all, it’s windy (not good for 18 wheelers) and Flagstaff is expecting snow starting tomorrow night through Wednesday. This is what you run into at this time of the year. Not that I want to be making any *suggestions* to the MAGA Freedumb Caravan, but they’d probably do better to take I-10 from California to where it splits to I-20 in Texas, and then take I-20 east to Dallas, and then I-30 northeast. Or something. Really, you don’t want to mess with the weather through the Intermountain West during February/March. Just not a smart thing to do.

That’s exactly what he thinks. Remember, they’re pretending to use the bogeyman of “insecure elections, Democrats are the party of ‘vote early, vote often’,” but what they REALLY want is to make it so only their privileged few can vote.

In Republican-run states with diverse populations, Republicans everywhere are working overtime to silence voters who don’t support their party. Even those who hate Trump and believe his views are toxic have no problems with this march to widespread voter suppression.

AFAICT Rand Paul is a racist as well as a Putin-supporting traitor. In March 2017, McCain accused Paul of working for Putin and in 2018 Paul delivered a Trump letter to Putin.

I guess the GOP is going to have to decide whether it’s more important to stop the Democrats or stop Putin, since the goals seem incompatible.

Certainly Saddam Hussein was as evil as Putin, though without nuclear weapons, and we used those dishonest claims to launch a war against him and bring death and devastation in Iraq and elsewhere. One key difference here is that we are not launching a war; and we will only be imposing economic sanctions if Putin actually launches one.

Fine Christian woman, divorced and everything. What’s even better is her living in NYC, that Liberal hellhole where no proper Conservative would willingly move to.

Fucking total hypocrite.

Granted but would you want to live in that meth cooking hellhole that is Wasilla?

I see no reason to believe that any western government is looking for excuses to join in a war against Russia — and if they wanted to, a Russian attack on Ukraine would be all the cause they’d need. Unlike Bush andfriends.

If Putin threatens the Baltics, Article 5 is going to come into play.

Whatever we’ve done in the past, we can’t look aside and do nothing now just because the US has done harm in the past, and we fear doing harm again. I’m waiting for Ilhan Omar to go on Twitter to say she won’t vote yes on some resolution on Ukraine, because we committed genocide against Native Americans in the past. (Tara Reade and her fellow bots have been making this point.)

Wait, they want to shut down IH 495, the Capital Beltway?

Oh dear, I don’t think they know just how many vehicles that are available to push their trucks into the ditches on the sides of the Beltway.

All I know about Ilhan Omar’s position on Ukraine is that she retweeted Mehdi Hassan on Putin ‘s contributions to Ukrainian solidarity — why would you expect her to do any such thing? (I can think of one or two more likely candidates on the democratic side, but I’m hoping from some party discipline, in a situation as grave as this one.)

Ilhan Omar speaks for herself and herself only. That will always be the D spin. She speaks for her constituents, not the D party.

Well, I’m off for the rack. But some notes.

We have booked our flights to the UK in early April and got a split-city fare (Austin —> Edinburgh, London—>Austin) for $648 each, round trip, the best fare we have ever gotten, and it’s on British Airways, where the food is good and the wine flows freely.

Y’all may want to look at spring travel, there are some fantastic deals out there.

I was just going to say the first time I drove on the beltway, trying to get from Rockville to Silver Spring, it was shut down for 2 hours because someone dropped a suitcase out of their car.

(I then figured out how to go all surface roads, which was fine, except for the time I turned one street too soon and pulled into Walter Reed and was surrounded by peeps with guns.)

There are a bunch of nearby govt facilities that are unmarked. But if you accidentally pull into their driveway at all, a bunch of security comes out to greet you and have a little chat. I suspect that they are so used to lost motorists by now, that the show is somewhat pro forma.

There is also a local building in a nearby urban area that is unmarked. But if you try to take a picture of that local street, a bunch of security comes over to direct you to delete those pictures.

On the other hand, a highly secure facility used to be across the street from the DC Juvenile Detention Facility. Escapees were well known to cross the street, go into the facility’s parking lot, hotwire employees’ cars and later ditch them in DC. The parking lot had high barbed wire fences and signs saying that the guards were authorized to shoot. I have not heard of anyone actually getting shot. Probably too much paperwork.

The DC Region’s roads do tend to get snarled up by traffic. Although not as bad as before the pandemic.

However, I suspect that those deliberately contributing to the traffic mess are not going to be appreciated. Not by local commuters. Not by local businesses. And not by the various constabulary.

DC and Maryland politicians will also likely be actively and aggressively against these idiots. As will Regional Virginia politicians.

I do not know about the Virginia State level officials such as Youngkin, though.

Here’s an idea. Maybe these truck idiots can go down to the county of some ‘Constitutional’ Sheriff and screw with their traffic instead.

I wonder how committed China is to any alliance with Russia. They need us — not their neighbor — for their economy to prosper. Other than some natural resources, what economic advantage does Russia really offer to China? Or is there some military Russian military asset that China believes will help them? Doesn’t China’s plans involve world domination through non-lethal economic and social domination, rather than use of their military?

That’s actually a pretty interesting point when it comes to international competitions: just maybe an off-the-cuff opinion (worth every penny one doesn’t pay for), but with the possible exception of energy imports, I can’t see China - in the longer term, which they always think in - being anything but a rival to Russia, not an “ally”. I think the main arena for any conflicts is likely to be in Central Asia (the “‘stans”), which Russia has considered its backyard since Czarist times, and still maintains a lot of influence in. Although I have read that the Chinese have outlined serious plans (like the “Belt and Road Initiative”) to tie that whole region to China as economic dependencies, making them look East, not West (to Russia), for trade and development. Which is probably a more-attractive prospect - as China never seems to care how local governments behave…

Yes, I suspect that they are used to lost motorists turning in the wrong spot. Glad that they didn’t give you much aggravation.

By the way, if you were heading inbound on Wisconsin Ave, pay very careful attention to the speed limit signs. That area is, or used to be, a really bad speedtrap.

I suspect that the group at Bethesda Naval Hospital was carefully positioned by tfg operatives after coordination with base officials.

I know of Syrian Christian immigrant while heading to a client’s office, turned one driveway too soon into an unmarked Govt facility. He realized his mistake and started to back out, but was stopped by security.

The security folks had a talk with him and then let him go. And did not take him out of his car. But still, not a good way to be late to an appointment with a client.

Doesn’t China’s plans involve world domination through non-lethal economic and social domination, rather than use of their military?

Richard Engle tweeted a NYT article about this earlier today.

My guess is that China is using Russia to see if the US is in retreat. Which would allow China to grab up portions of Asia, such as Taiwan, without risk.

From the article:

The Biden administration plans to build up global coalitions to counter a pact between Vladimir V. Putin and Xi Jinping, portending a new type of Cold War.

*snip*
In recent weeks, the two nations negotiated a 30-year contract for Russia to supply gas to China through a new pipeline. They blocked a demand from Washington that the United Nations impose additional sanctions on North Korea for new missile tests, even though the two nations had agreed to similar sanctions before. And Russia moved large numbers of troops from Siberia to its west, a sign that Moscow, in preparing for a potential invasion of Ukraine, trusts China along their shared border in the east.

*snip*

“It’s certainly concerning, and it is not a positive development from the standpoint of U.S. national security or U.S. national interests,” said Susan Shirk, the chair of the 21st Century China Center at the University of California, San Diego, and a former State Department official. “They have a kind of common perspective on the U.S. right now, and there is this affinity between the leaders.”

*snip*

China and Russia are not united by ideology, and they are in a marriage of convenience that Russia needs more. While Mr. Xi appreciates Mr. Putin’s defiance of the United States, he does not want the economic uncertainty that a European war would bring. China also traditionally insists on respecting every nation’s sovereignty, as Mr. Wang made clear on Saturday.

There are limits to what China would do to help Mr. Putin if he invades Ukraine. After Washington imposes sanctions on Russia, Chinese companies could buy more oil and gas from Russia and help fill some technology gaps, but the major Chinese state-owned banks would probably refrain from overt violations of the sanctions for fear of being shut out of the global financial system.

Richard Engle tweeted a NYT article about this earlier today.

[Embedded content]

My guess is that China is using Russia to see if the US is in retreat. Which would allow China to grab up portions of Asia, such as Taiwan, without risk.

From the article:

The Biden administration plans to build up global coalitions to counter a pact between Vladimir V. Putin and Xi Jinping, portending a new type of Cold War.

nytimes.com

Yeah, the long and short of it is that Beijing is likely to take advantage of any damage done to the Russian economy to feather their own nest, but this is not the beginning of a new Russo-Sino Alliance. They’ll happily buy up Russian oil and gas while it’s cheap, and they might provide some materiel help, but they’re not going to help Moscow defy any economic sanctions or launder their money through Chinese banks.

Reminds me of back in the 1990’s, somebody announced to the local Linux User Group that there was some malware designed for linux. A bunch of hobbyists reported that they had downloaded it and then dissected it, like some insect. In the end, they sounded unimpressed and even disappointed with it.

Apparently times have changed.

Decades of being on the internet have taught me that the people most likely to encounter issues with computer viruses are the ones who will, when asked what they did, admit to doing the very things that they were warned dozens of times in various languages not to do.

Illicit drugs are flowing into the country at an alarming rate because of Biden’s open border.

839 pounds of deadly fentanyl was seized at the southern border in January alone.

As a rule, authorities seize no more than 10% of the overall volume, so that means another 3.8 tons of it most likely did get through

But blaming it entirely on Biden’s border policies is a conscious over-simplification of a much bigger problem.

“New Cold War” is a term to be used with great care and caution: the Cold War was a global struggle for dominance over ideology and economic systems.

The new conflict is more about nations expanding their spheres of political, economic and military interest. And “recovering” lost territories (Former Soviet Republics/Taiwan).

Of course, any autocrat who can boast of military successes has a better hand, but again, Putin has a concrete short-term goal of re-establishing the Russian Empire either by direct annexation or forcing the countries into its political, economic and military sphere of influence.

China is pursuing similar goals in reoccupying Taiwan and expanding its hegemony over SE Asia.

Sounds quaint and Machiavellian, but in today’s climate that is playing with fire: they will see that call to “boycott” as an invitation to storm state capitols and/or polling places along with threatening poll workers and other election officials.

SpaceX is targeting Monday, February 21 for a Falcon 9 launch of 46 Starlink satellites to low Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The instantaneous launch window is at 9:44 a.m. EST, or 14:44 UTC.

What about “The Penis Length War”? I mean, that’s what this appears to be at the end of the day. Whose d*ck is the longest. That, and “chasing the dragon” (choice of expression very intended) of the glory of days gone past, just like any other junkie.

Aren’t you describing wordle?

An anonymously written short horror story posted at sorryantivaxxer.com which is as good as any Stephen King has written, IMHO.

re: #187 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

China is not going to take Russia to task for “recovering” its “lost provinces” as they have similar designs on Taiwan. Once the precedent is set and accepted, then their next move is all the easier.

I think the Chinese know that a full scale amphibious invasion of Taiwan won’t be anything close to easy, unless one thinks D-Day was a cakewalk.

I think the Chinese know that a full scale amphibious invasion of Taiwan won’t be anything close to easy, unless one thinks D-Day was a cakewalk.

That will be a long-term project but they want to make sure that Russia has no room to object or even comment.

Don’t forget that China still has a large surplus male population. They can afford to lose six or ten million of them and it would actually help their demographics over the long term.

And IIRC, China is still in the process of building their amphibious assault capabilities. They’re not quite to the point where they could launch a straight-up Normandy-style landing - that would take them awhile longer to get there. In any event, Xi Jinping strikes me as the type to play the long game.

Then the question would be will it be a limited incursion into the separatist regions, or a full-scale invasion aimed at Kyiv?

No. It is 1 cup mashed potatoes, 1 egg, 1/3 cup flour, and “some amount” (I kinda winged it) of shredded cheddar cheese and diced ham. They didn’t quite get fried all the way through; one was still very soft in the center, the other kinda soft but not so much. Based on this information, I would say they should fry for about 4 minutes a side.

…….

Salami slice Ukraine: Rather than a full-bore invasion, Putin could effectively annex a small strip of land adjacent to Russia. By not engaging in a massive attack, he might avoid the worst sanctions. Then, after he got a small strip, he could go after the next strip. Rinse and repeat. It has worked before. If you remember your world history, you know that on August 4, 1772, there was a country called Poland. On August 6, 1772, it was still there, but smaller. On January 23, 1793, it was still there, but smaller still. On October 24, 1795, there was no more Poland until after World War I. It could be a playbook for Ukraine, except this time Germany and Austria aren’t going to help out

Stopping at the Dnieper River would be logical, but it presents a major problem, especially if the Ukrainian government relocates to Lviv and launches an insurrection to retake the Russian-occupied areas. NATO could quite easily supply a rump Ukrainian state with all manner of weapons, which would pose a real threat of a protracted and bloody insurgency war. Thus, in order to forestall that possibility, there is a likelihood that Putin could decide to continue a military offensive….right up until it runs into the borders of NATO members Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.

One of my Czech students earlier today suggested a new Beneš Decrees, though aimed at Russia.

en.wikipedia.org

The Beneš Decrees are still technically in effect, and as the article notes, are used to this day by the Slovaks to confiscate property from Hungarians in Slovakia.

That being said, there’s a strong argument to be made that the Beneš Decrees constitute war crimes, chiefly, ethnic cleansing and deprivation of due process of law. To which my student countered, “They’re (Russians) animals anyway. Europe will be a much better place without Russians contaminating it.”

Which is right. International law is playground law. There is no adult or other superior authority that is going to step in and enforce “rules”. It’s simply lesser, equal, or greater peers who may or may not decide to let you do something and get away with it.

The various agreements and the UN are attempts to make the major wars less likely and work out disagreements since the powers realized that WW1-WW2 caused themselves a lot of internal and external economic harm and to a large degree are not worth fighting compared to other solutions.

International law is enforced by the great powers, therefore it usually falls more heavily on smaller states than large ones. But this may be Putin’s attempt to back away without losing (too much) face, since those breakaway regions were already pretty much under Russian control.

It would be a very bad idea for western powers to let this pass, no matter how little it actually changes things.

Also, there’s been rumors for several years that Putin suffers from some malady (the most common of those rumors is Parkinson’s Disease, but there’s stories about cancer scares as well) and that he figures he needs to act now while he’s still in relatively good health.

It’s been suggested that one motivation for Hitler’s rush to war in 1939 was his hypochondria - he was apparently obsessed with the notion that he was going to die of cancer (no doubt caused by the trauma of his mother’s untimely death from breast cancer) and that if he didn’t act right then and there, then Germany would have no future.

Of course. There must be severe sanctions and economic measures taken against Russia in response. That goes without saying. If I were POTUS, I’d be slapping Russia on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, with all the serious consequences that entails and then tell to Putin to go suck it.

Moldova and Romania, if they value independence, should be very concerned right now. Once they are “annexed” the now authoritarian Hungary will quickly pledge “sympathy” with Putin’s “repatriation of Russian peoples” and align with Russia. Dictators flock together.

Turkey is likely alarmed at once again having the Russian presence encircling and increasingly encroaching on their area of influence. This is not going to end well at this rate.

It is not exactly WW1 nor is it WW2. It is a new potential World War type initiated by malignant trolls with massive egos and access to nuclear weapons. The supposed deference to corporate and oligarchical interests avoiding hot war cannot be counted on when nationalist egos and the personal honor of a dictator is involved. The optimistic outlook is that the problem will ‘take care of itself” inside Russia (a body falling out of a Kremlin window) but with modern techniques and technology of internal security this cannot be counted on.

The pessimistic outlook is that it will unfortunately take the Russian people seeing a steady flow of body bags back home to be enough to have them take care of business against Putin. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

Dictators suck.

We’re talking Russia. They’ll likely never see such a thing.

re: #275 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

His generals (and especially his admirals) really wanted him to wait until 1943 until he had the army and navy properly equipped and enough reserves or fuel and munitions on hand to win a war.

Except that Hitler was working along another timeline as well (AFACBD). After Britain and France basically did nothing after he annexed the Sudetenland (and reacted to the occupation of the rest of Czechoslovakia mainly by “strengthening” their commitments to Poland) he knew he had a limited window to act before the Soviets got into the act: which he dealt with by the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact - launching the war in 1939 on the assumption that the Germans would win a quick knockout in Poland (with Russian help), and that he would be able to stall/temporize/”negotiate” the British and French into ending the conflict soon after.
He was wrong about that, of course, but was “proved right” by the results of the Battle of France in 1940…..

Many Russians are ethno-nationalists with a bent towards the old ways.

It will take a lot of pain and suffering to see Putin up-ended in a revolt.

The problem with that theory is that the other countries were beefing up their militaries as well.

And they didn’t have the resources to build enough weapons and ammo. They were too short on almost everything and lost the war by declaring war. See Tooz “Wages of Destruction” for details.

Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance tried to do damage control on Monday after retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey suggested that he is a Russian “stooge.”

After Vance said that he did not care if Ukraine is invaded by Russia, McCaffrey tweeted condemnation of the GOP candidate.

“JD Vance is a shameful person unsuitable for public office,” the retired general wrote on Twitter. “His comments are those of a stooge for Russian aggression.”

Opinion: Trump’s legal problems are about to get a whole lot worse
by Jennifer Rubin
washingtonpost.com

A federal judge ruled last week that a trio of civil claims against defeated former president Donald Trump for his actions on and before the Jan. 6 insurrection can proceed. The cases, brought by 11 members of Congress and two Capitol Police officers, are a reminder that civil liability could deal a substantial blow to the instigator in chief.

In a 112-page opinion, District Court Judge Amit P. Mehta dismissed certain claims against Donald Trump Jr., former Trump attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani and Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), all of whom joined Trump in his rally preceding the violence. But the language of the ruling was devastating for Trump. “The first ever presidential transfer of power marred by violence was over,” the court explained. “These cases concern who, if anyone, should be held civilly liable for the events of January 6th.”

A deeper look into the opinion, which cut a lot of legs out from under TFG’s arguments.

“JD Vance is a shameful person unsuitable for public office”

So Vance responds by promising a retaliatory investigation of McCaffrey, proving the general’s point.

Cold showers suck

Years ago, due to me being well…not great with money at the time, I became unable to pay my propane bill and as a result lost my access to hot water (and my stove) for a couple of months.

Fortunately, we had a neighbor willing to let us use his shower in the short term. One night, I needed a shower but didn’t feel like going through the whole song and dance of dragging my stuff to the neighbors place so I took a cold shower.

I wasn’t fond of the experience, but after I got out I started thinking about how many people the world over don’t have access to clean water to be able to do what I had just done…and it made me realize how much those of us in wealthy nations really do take for granted.
