re: #105 Hecuba’s daughter
The 10 Commandments say nothing about lying, only about bearing false witness against your neighbor. Wonder how that extends to those who are not your neighbors — like a judge or a prosecutor in a case against you.
If I wanted to use a legalistic definition of “bear witness” as shown in God’s Own Bible, the Abridged Version of the King James, I would go with Merriam-Webster. Neither requires a court.
Definition 1
: to show that something exists or is true
—+ to
His success bears witness to the value of hard work.
Rising ticket sales bear witness to the band’s popularity.
In the first example: He was later convicted of embezzlement (which could be hard work I guess).
In the second example: The band was able to book more venues (because they quit their jobs and had more time)
Definition 2
formal : to make a statement saying that one saw or knows something
asked to bear witness to the facts
She was accused of bearing false witness at the trial.
In the first example:
Concerned woman: Did you see my husband in a bar with his secretary?
Homewrecker: Yes. He’s been there with her a lot (she lied).
re: #5 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
My response would be, “And who is my neighbor?” Which, following a New Testament interpretation, would imply “everybody” - the supposed lesson of the Parable of the Good Samaritan, which was given in response to that exact question. (Note how this parable is frequently ignored in many right-wing fundamentalist interpretations of Scripture.)

Even things like universal health care and gun bans can be complicated/complex. Complex issues require complex solutions.
As someone who has voted third party more than once, I get the desire to vote for the person most inline with your world view and/or ideology. And I always find it interesting that Republicans and Democrats say the same thing about voting third party - that you’re throwing your vote away or essentially voting for the other major party nominee (this is, by the way, a terrible argument because as a voter it’s my vote, so I’m not throwing it away, and I’m not “voting for the other guy”, [1] I’m voting for the person most aligned with my beliefs - all it does is make you sound like a condescending jackass who isn’t actually listening to the person you’re “debating”).
Why is it a terrible argument (throwing your vote away)? How many third-party candidates have won a federal election? In my lifetime, I am aware of only one person who ever won (Lisa Murkowski as a write-in, then immediately rejoined the Republican Party). There’s no debate here.
It is not condescending to tell a person that their vote will not have an effect (that is a fact), but third-party voters actually condescend that they’re voting their “principles” while they watch people losing their rights as long as they think it won’t affect them personally. They were principled though.
The argument is similar to a religious argument. A fundamentalist believer says evolution by natural selection is untrue, and you’re a “jackass” for not listening to the person you’re “debating.” There is no debate there; evolution is a fact.
But unfortunately, we don’t have viable third parties in our system at present. And the system is set up in a way to quash them, which in turns leads to most [2] third parties being generally unserious entities unable to actually deal with the complex issues facing the country and the world.
See, I don’t get the contrast between #1 and #2 I bolded there. The “system” is not set up to quash third parties. Voters generally align themselves with two large groups (parties) most closely aligning to their wishes (Duverger’s Law). You state in one sentence that you’ve voted for third party candidates even though their parties are generally unserious entities.
So if they are unserious parties, why would you vote for their candidates?
“I’m not voting for lesser of two evils” argument (used by third-party supporters as a pejorative) rejects two premises:
a) “Lesser evil” can in fact be defined as “good”
b) Even if it’s not good, lesser evil is preferable than greater evil.

The signs had the right message, as required by law. One stated “In God We Trust” over a rainbow background. Another was in Arabic. But the Carroll school district in North Texas rejected the signs, saying it already has enough for its buildings.
“Why is more God not good?” came the retort from Sravan Krishna, a local resident who sought to donate the colorful signs at a school board meeting in Southlake, a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, earlier this week.

NPR, today:
MOSCOW — A Russian court has sentenced a United States soldier to nearly four years in prison on charges of theft and threatening to murder, the latest in a series of arrested American citizens in Russia amid simmering tensions over Ukraine and other issues.
Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, 34, had been stationed in South Korea and was preparing to return on leave to the U.S. when he made a decision that U.S. Army officials say was in violation of rules.
Without informing superiors, Black traveled to Russia’s Far Eastern city of Vladivostok, entering via China, to see his Russian girlfriend with whom he had started a relationship during his posting overseas.
The judge convicted Black on all charges and sentenced him to three years and nine months in a prison colony. Prosecutors had asked for four years and eight months. Black had plead guilty to taking money but said he had no intent to harm, and plead not guilty to the charge of threatening to murder his girlfriend, a Russian national named Alexandra Vashchuk.
Regarding the US Army decision, since he violated standing orders by going to Vladivostok, when he gets back he faces military trouble as well. Additionally, no pay whilst he’s in a Russian prison camp.

Just a reminder, the Nicene Creed was proposed as a statement of faith at last week’s Southern Baptist Convention. It never came up for a vote, in part because Baptists have historically been anti-creedal. And because there are more than a few Baptist pastors who hold a view of the Trinity that is sub-Arian (the whole reason for the Nicene Creed in the first place). We have heard again and again about how Trump was going to finally pull himself together, be “presidential,” and shock the fuck out of his critics. And then he shows up, plays to type, and they tell us “Well, he didn’t feel comfortable doing what they told him, he had to be himself.”
So yes, he’s going to show up to the debate, he’s going to be a loud and brutish asshole, and that’s going to include screaming loud enough to be heard over the muted mic because he thinks it will trip up Biden. Illinois Republican Party chair resigns weeks before RNC over infighting
Illinois Republican Party chair Don Tracy has resigned — citing GOP infighting — just weeks before the Republican National Convention is set to take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Tracy, who had assumed the position in 2021, announced the decision to the party’s state central committee airing grievances about warring amongst fellow Republicans instead of focusing on issues and besting the left.
“When I took on this full-time volunteer job in February, 2021, I thought I would be spending most of my time fighting Democrats, helping elect Republicans, raising money to pay for more Party infrastructure, and advocating for Party unity,” according to the letter. “Unfortunately, however, I have had to spend far too much time dealing with intra party power struggles, and local intra party animosities that continued after primaries and County Chair elections.”
In a subsequent statement, Tracy blamed the bleak state of politics.
“In better days, Illinois Republicans came together after tough intra party elections,” he said. “Now however, we have Republicans who would rather fight other Republicans than engage in the harder work of defeating incumbent Democrats by convincing swing voters to vote Republican.”

The Southern Baptist Convention adopted a ridiculously long creed in May 1963 as a statement of faith.

The Baptist Faith and Message (Caution for badly-designed Website even by Nineties standards) (Bible Canada, an interactive Bible Website. Whatever you do, don’t go to the main page if you believe in sin against the Gospel According to Graphic Design. That said, the main page links to scores of apologetics arguments, all of them bad.)
Most Protestant churches reject the Nicene Creed in favour of the Apostle’s Creed. That said, various Baptist sects have said that if they adopt and promulgate any creed written by men, it puts those words on par or above the words of the Bible.
That leads to a question which will be hand-waved away if an atheist asks a Baptist about it: “If the words of people might be construed as equal to or more important than the Bible, why do you preach and proselytise at all? Those are the words of people. Why not read the Bible and only the Bible?”
A question like that will not be answered in good faith.

I like this part, which highlights the unreality of perception by conservatives about American cities.
On June 7, some 20,000 people attended a concert headlined by Detroit native Diana Ross to celebrate the reopening of the Michigan Central Station. The passenger hall has been lavishly returned to its original glory. The hotel that once rose above the station has been restored and repurposed as a retail and cultural space. A PBS camera crew led viewers through the renewed terminal, so you can see for yourself.
The rebuild was funded by private investment, principally from the Ford Motor Company. The investors will put the space to new use, as the anchor of a 30-acre technology hub near a residential district that’s being revived. The reopening of the station capped a year of good news for Detroit. In 2023, the city’s population grew for the first time since 1957. Crime in the city plunged, with double-digit drops in carjackings and shootings—and the fewest homicides since 1966. Home prices rose faster than in any other city in the nation, surpassing the annual gain of more than 8 percent set by the previous front-runner, Miami.

Whoever set up that abomination of a Bible Website did it in 2000 from British Columbia. (Registrant’s name withheld, registered by a company named Webnames Private)
They attack the Catholic Church, Calvinism, 7th Day Adventists, evolution, speaking in tongues, Rapture theology, the Mormon Church, Islam, psychiatry (calls it more dangerous than Charles Darwin), Jehovah’s Witnesses, those opposed to Sola Sciptura theology, &c.
On psychiatry, they make the standard anti-science claim that you can’t do a lab test for it, so you should seek out a regular physician to get physical tests to “prove” you don’t have things like clinical depression or schizophrenia and seek treatment using the recommendations of the Bible.
So there are ways to get around the embargo at Whois on who this is. On the site on a back page, there is a search feature to “find a church near you.” (I presume those would be acceptable churches to whomever owns this trainwreck of a Website.) So I did that.
It coughed up this map:
bible.ca
It lists a sting of churches along Interstate 25 from the Wyoming-Colorado border to Colorado Springs, and one in Rapid City, South Dakota.
They are all Church of Christ churches. (Interestingly, it doesn’t list the Cheyenne or Scottsbluff Churches of Christ. Too liberal for them maybe?)
Using their general search function on the term “epilepsy,” they have a whole bunch of pages calling it “sinful” and “demon possession.” They claim Ellen G. White (founder of the 7th Day Adventist Church) had epilepsy, and thus was possessed by demons and her parishioners led astray.
All of that had me go back and look at the pages and pages of people with epilepsy from the now-closed but archived Epilepsy Foundation discussion forum (thanks, 4chan), where hundreds of people from many Christian denominations couldn’t understand why family members or friends or churches called them “sinful” or “demon-possessed” or disowning them.
They were trying to work through religious trauma inflicted on them whilst still holding on to the same religion.
I guess this wingnut wouldn’t want me around his church (or his house, or his town, or alive, &c).
Christian Healing (Goes to the Epilepsy Foundation, August 8, 2010, with ten pages and scores of commentators trying to uplift each other and confused why their Christian brethren would disparage them. There are no people like me telling them to “come to the Dark Side, we have cookies.” All of the comments are from Christians.)

He’s a conservative. He will not allow them to have actual power over him. Netenyahu hasn’t been around since the Eighties in politics because he’s a shrinking violet. The second his erstwhile Haredi supporters turn on him over the token yeshiva student draft, he will politically shiv every opponent he needs to, to stay in power and out of jail.
The only thing these alleged liberals are objecting to regarding the yeshivas is special treatment under the law for their religious sect. There are way more not-Haredi.

What I do know is that the fact that God didn’t lightning smoke every preacher who sullied his Son’s (and hizzown self’s!) reputation made me an agnostic.
In my case it was my Catholic upbringing and all the Campus Crusade for Christ goombahs I encountered at college.
I have since mellowed on outright anti-Christianity but am still agnostic as all hell.

you can do things like that in a parliamentary system. An awful lot of populist parties gained a lot of votes in Europe through protest voters.
These populist parties have almost never been part of any government, so they can campaign on promises and rhetoric rather than record.
Two nations that where the populists actually lost seats in the EU parliament (Slovakia and Hungary) are ones which have had such governments in power.

R candidate in Purity Precinct: 732 votes
D candidate in Purity Precinct: 497 votes
Purity voters: 25 votes. 30 didn’t vote at all.
Ballot proposition A: Preserve abortion rights fails by 15 votes.
Ballot proposition B: Defund the public library. Passes by 15 votes.
Message sent was what exactly?
Or in my village where enough people voted against me to put in the R/neo-Nazi candidate in 2018. The message they were trying to send me was “you’re not a Christian.” Lost by three votes, automatic state recount confirmed it.
I still want to know who the Green Party voters were here in 2020 who cast three total votes for Dr. Jill Stein (she qualified by petition since we have no Green Party here), or the eight Libertarian votes for Gary Johnson.
All eleven of those votes must have sent one helluva message to -uh- someone? The Stein voters here are apparently too embarrassed by that.
The only “message” I can see such a voter sending is bragging to others that they’re not beholden to “the Duopoly.” They certainly aren’t sending a message to either major party.

Ask him if he’s ever seen a comment(s) section on an electoral ballot where he could write out his “message” so that when the major parties wonder why they lost his vote, they’ll know it was about “corruption” and not about any of a fuckton of other issues that “protest” votes are lodged in favor or opposition to.

British politics is a prime example of how easy it is to form “protest” parties who gain a few hundred or thousand votes overall but never win seats and thus can promise or oppose whatever they like knowing that it’s all a laugh. After all, what are the odds that anybody here in the US would take somebody calling himself “Lord Binface” seriously? Or the “Official Monster Raving Loony” Party which has never won a seat yet always stands at least one candidate per general election?
Really, this is the first general election in ages where people are treating seriously the idea that not only can the Lib Dems carry a statistically significant number of seats, but that they might actually replace the Conservatives as the opposition party when Labour forms a government next month. And it is all thanks largely to two other “protest” parties, UKIP and Reform UK, whose ability to draw the nativist vote away from the Tories has pretty much doomed them as a major party for next 1-2 general elections.

Few of these people want to put in the work to actually change things. Lazy SOBs just like to complain. Don’t like the Democrats? Get out there and change things by working your butt off. How about getting a real nationwide Green party for all state offices rather than simply a Presidential one every 4 years. Where are the Green Senators and Representatives?
Texas used to be a one party state. I saw both my parents work for almost a decade in the 60s to make the Republican party viable there (it was a much different GOP then, before the conservatives took over in 1980). They helped make it a 2 party state for a while, removing a lot of the corruption of a single-party state. They were both terribly dissapointed in their last years in what the GOP has become.
And this brings up a good point - neither party is the same as it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. And, with hard work, they won’t be the same in a decade. Hardworking people change the parties. Whiners do not.

Voting third party for everything or just prez?
It’s a meaningless, throwaway statement. Which Dems or Rs? All of them? At all levels of government? In every state and jurisdiction? No, that’s just lazy “I don’t really have anything” posturing.
It’s already been pointed out sending a message to who? Who’s listening? What are they gonna do with this brilliant insight?
And it still misses the basic problem esp at the prez level: one of the two *will* be president. Who do you prefer to govern you. One of them must be better, or alternatively less bad. If you say you don’t care or it doesn’t matter you’re not paying attention and again just being lazy. That makes you a enabling contributor to the system you abhor.

These are ones partial to the (il)logic that we all probably heard at least once in our lives, that if things are made shitty enough by a Republican in the WH, then the voting public will so hunger for a “true progressive” that either the Dems will be forced to embrace one as their nominee or watch as a third party wins the presidency in their place.
The same ones who will tell you with absolute conviction that the system is “rigged” so that third parties can never win, but also that all it would take for a Sanders or Stein to win the presidency would be every Dem changing their vote in “protest.” The sort of intellectual titans who think that the sum total of the “representative” in “representative democracy” is that you vote for someone and if they don’t live up to your expectations, then you just wait a few years and try again.

Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly warning in an open letter on Thursday about the dangers of fake and compounded versions of its diabetes and weight loss medications Mounjaro and Zepbound. The company also announced new lawsuits against wellness centers and medical spas advertising these drugs.
Eli Lilly’s main competitor, Novo Nordisk, which sells Ozempic and Wegovy, has also filed lawsuits against med spas purportedly selling knockoff versions.
Both companies say the extraordinary demand for these drugs has led to shortages, which has in turn prompted black and grey market sales of other versions of their products that may pose a health risk to consumers.

Eli Lilly says that the company has done testing of compounded versions of their drug, and they have observed safety, sterility and efficacy problems. Some of the products have bacteria, high impurities, different colors or a completely different chemical structure than the company’s FDA-approved medicine. In at least one instance, the product was nothing more than sugar alcohol, Eli Lilly said.

Will they, though? Anyone who doesn’t vote for Trump, in his eyes, is an enemy of the state, and must be jailed or killed. That includes the protest voters; he doesn’t understand or care that their inaction got him elected, they didn’t vote for him, that is a punishable crime. A retired physician is “lucky to be alive” and credits his bike for saving his life after he and another cyclist were mowed down in a brazen hit-and-run near a Texas airport on Monday.
Benjamin Hylander, a 31-year-old cargo team member at American Airlines, is accused of running over cyclists Tom Geppert, 69, and Deborah Eads, 65, who were part of a group of bikers riding around Dallas-Fort Worth International Aiport at 6 p.m.
Hylander was seen rapidly approaching the riders in his white Subaru Forested, initially striking Eads before clipping Geppert’s back tire, which launched him into the left lane until he fell to the road.
“All of a sudden, something pushes me from behind,” Geppert told KDFW. “Then I could feel myself falling from the right, and then that’s pretty much the last thing I remember.”
Geppert said he lost consciousness for a few minutes in the horrifying crash.

Fossil fuel use reaches global record despite clean energy growth
The world’s consumption of fossil fuels climbed to a record high last year, driving emissions to more than 40 gigatonnes of CO2 for the first time, according to a global energy report.
Despite a record rise in the use of renewable energy in 2023, consumption of fossil fuels continued to increase too, an annual review of world energy by the Energy Institute found.
Juliet Davenport, the president of the Energy Institute, said the report had revealed “another year of highs in our energy-hungry world” including a record high consumption of fossil fuels, which rose by 1.5% to 505 exajoules.
[…]
Overall, fossil fuels made up 81.5% of the world’s primary energy last year, down only marginally from 82% the year before, according to the report, even as wind and solar farms generated record amounts of clean electricity.
The report, authored by consultants at KPMG and Kearney, found that wind and solar power climbed by 13% last year to reach a new record of 4,748 terawatt hours in 2023.
But that was not enough to match the world’s growing consumption of primary energy, which rose 2% last year to a record high of 620 exajoules and led to more fossil fuel use.
The review found that the world’s appetite for gas remained steady in 2024 while consumption of coal climbed by 1.6% and oil demand rose by 2% to reach 100m barrels a day for the first time.
[…]
Well, so much for natural gas removing the need for coal.

Crypto and AI are the drivers of rapid energy demand growth for sure. Another theory I’ve noticed is that the rise of EVs as a legitimate alternative has scared oil industry CEOs enough to greatly lessened the chances of any future oil price spikes. The plan now going forward is to carefully manage oil and gasoline prices so as to not drive EV growth while at the same time maximizing profits.
As far as crypto and AI there should be legislation to require solar and wind installations either directly on site or investment into collective projects to offset the required energy demand.

Josh Marshall at TalkingPointsMemo has coined the term Dignity Wraiths:
Dignity Wraiths, Resilience and Democratic Character
[…]
…a stream of posts and tweets over several years about “dignity loss” and “dignity wraiths” and like things, a whole bespoke vocabulary or a running gag about this pattern we’re all aware of in which Trump demands of people an ever escalating series of humiliations, dignity losses and more. Trump requires it — that part alone isn’t hard to understand. It’s that people give it … lavishly and fulsomely. Soon you’ve got some guy you may not have agreed with but seemed like a reasonably self-possessed adult, and they’re saying “thank you, sir, may I have another” each time Trump comes up with a new insult name for them, praising his far-reaching intellect and encyclopedic knowledge of history, clapping obediently on his approach. Trump somehow casts a spell over these people and soon they’re like a desiccated dignity husk. It’s like he’s a dignity black hole that no one can re-emerge from.

While many bytes have been spilled calling out crypto, I don’t know of any high-quality measures of the actual energy consumed.
In the US, data centers allegedly consume about 3% of all electricity generated.
However, crypto stuff may be done mostly in other countries. I can’t tell you how much, say, of Brazil’s electricity demand is due to crypto.
AI has the potential to make crypto look small, as far as energy consumption.
Apple’s plan to make AI on-device covers a limited set of functionality, which may increase a device’s energy consumption a little bit. But they are off-device partitioning the harder AI stuff, and while they will have their own data centers handle some of that, other user demands for AI will be sent to chatGPT and such.

Meanwhile, in Minsk….
Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made an antisemitic statement Saturday during his government meeting in which he hinted at a connection between Jews and theft.
He referred to a corruption case involving his former aide, the governor of the Vitebsk region and former Minister of Agriculture and Food Igor Brylo, as well as dozens of other people. “There are 36 people on the list. Sorry, I don’t consider myself antisemitic, but more than half of them are Jewish. Do they have a special, privileged role, that they steal and do not think about their future? Do they have privileges? All peoples living in Belarus should be equal. Jews, Belarusians, Ukrainians, Russians and Poles,” Lukashenko said.
This is not the first antisemitic statement by Lukashenko, who has been called “the last dictator in Europe.” In 2007 he said that the Jews had turned the city of Bobruisk into a “pig sty” and that “this was founded as a Jewish city and you know how Jews treat the place they live in.” In July 2021 he said that the “whole world bows” to the Jews after the Holocaust. In December 2023 he said: “Armenians are smart people. There is not even one Jew there.”
So, puttered around Ostrava today. There’s still about 10,000 without electricity, but that’s confined to the city center. Cleanup crews are working hard, and the power company is saying that power should be fully restored to all locations by tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

I’m thinking (and keeping my fingers crossed) that we’ll soon start to see Biden pulling ahead and not just nationally, but in the battleground states, too.

Explaining this would take a long time, but Jesus has to be subordinate to the Father, and because of that, women have to be subordinate to men.
I wish I was kidding. I am not.
When i was attending [Episcopal] church services, i always preferred the recitation of the Apostles Creed, as opposed to the Nicene Creed (was unable to discern reason for the choice by the priest) as it was shorter and the services were be over sooner.

Chickenshits.
They’re waiting until the very last minute to do so, because they are fully on board with stalling his criminal cases until after the election. Fucking bastards. I honestly thought they wouldn’t help him, because they’d view him as competition for King of America, and power-mad Alito wouldn’t want to share. I don’t know if they think they can control him, or what their game is, but it’s shitty that we have to sit here and watch.
Looks like we’ll have to wait until tomorrow. According to the SCOTUSblog calendar, 21 June is the last day for opinions.
The big case handed down today was a tax case: Moore v US. : The MRT—which attributes the realized and undistributed income of an American-controlled foreign corporation to the entity’s American shareholders, and then taxes the American shareholders on their
portions of that income—does not exceed Congress’s constitutional authority. 7-2 (Thomas and Gorsuch dissenting). There were concurrences from Jackson, Barrett, and Alito.
There was an immigration case, decided 5-4 (Sotomayor, Jackson, Kagan, and Gorsuch in minority), dealing with notice and recission hearings.
The latest polls almost all have Biden in the lead, and most of America hasn’t seen Trump babble incoherently lately, but they will get their chance during the upcoming debate, if Trump doesn’t back out. I think Democrats can gear down from panic mode; the President has got this.

Keep the panic, and throw down the hammer - beat the GOP in to submission at every level, and make sure we not only hold the Senate and WH, but retake the House. Make it happen, and make sure that people understand that Congress is ineffective because the GOP have deemed it so.

No we can’t. This just means the GOP will get more desperate - there is nothing more dangerous than a cornered feral rat who knows euthanasia waits for him.
Until Biden is installed in his second term, there is a Democratic majority in both houses, the unconstitutional filibuster is gone and the court has been expanded to 13 - then, maybe, we can relax.
We tried that third party thing here in Minnesota in 1998 by electing Jesse Ventura for governor mainly because of an action figure ad. I think we went about six weeks with the D’s and R’s cowering in fear until they figured out there was no compelling interest for them to listen to or work with Jesse. And, after Jesse got his pet peeve tax on ATVs repealed, I think all he cared about was sparring with the “jackals” in the press.
In other words, in this case voting third party “succeeded” but did not send a message or create any change.

I’m not saying we should relax, but we don’t have to despair, or entertain desperate, kooky ideas like trying to replace President Biden on the ticket at the last minute. We’re winning; we just have to remain vigilant and continue to work our butts off to finish the job.

The point is, however that fossil fuels are outdated technology, their supporters are the ones holding us back in the 19th and 20th centuries while the true path to the future is through renewables and alternatives, environmental concerns notwithstanding.
