Video: Who Stumbled on the Oath?

Video • Views: 5,747

We’ve been hearing people bashing Barack Obama for “flubbing” his oath of office, but here’s the video—and you can see that it was Justice Roberts who messed it up, not Obama.

FLV Video

ROBERTS: Are you prepared to take the oath, Senator?
OBAMA: I am.
ROBERTS: I, Barack Hussein Obama…
OBAMA: I, Barack…
ROBERTS: … do solemnly swear…
OBAMA: I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear…
ROBERTS: … that I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully…
OBAMA: … that I will execute…
ROBERTS: … faithfully the office of president of the United States…
OBAMA: … the office of president of the United States faithfully…
ROBERTS: … and will to the best of my ability…
OBAMA: … and will to the best of my ability…
ROBERTS: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
OBAMA: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
ROBERTS: So help you God?
OBAMA: So help me God.
ROBERTS: Congratulations, Mr. President.

Loyal opposition is the concept that one can be opposed to the actions of the government or ruling party of the day without being opposed to the constitution of the political system. —Wikipedia

Didn't watch it, don't care.

Some people are not blessed with oratory skill, some are. Bush obviously was not, Clinton was, Reagan certainly was.

Having conversation hone in on petty tabloid issues like this allow for distraction.

I am much more worried about the real problems we face going forward.

It seems that their signals were crossed right at the beginning when they were out of sync on the pauses. That probably increased the nervousness. It seemed to me that Obama knew the oath and tried to repair the stumble and stumbled himself.

Question: What happens when the oath is flubbed?

It the oath more symbolic? Or does flubbing it mean you don't qualify as president?

On further review, I notice that BHO seems to interrupt Roberts on the first line, which probably threw them both off.
Either way it's a non-story, but it's kind of nice to see that even Obama is occasionally capable of errors that us mere mortals make all the time.

I asked a similar question yesterday. I believe the real transfer of power happened last night but I have nothing to back that up. I was wondering because I heard a talking head who used to work in the White House talk about the football being transferred the night before the inauguration.

34 lawhawk  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 11:06:01am

WASHINGTON (CNN) — As his first official action after being sworn in, President Barack Obama signed three documents Tuesday, including a proclamation declaring a day of national renewal and reconciliation.

“I’m a lefty. Get used to it,” Obama quipped as he signed his name.
“I was told not to swipe the pen.”

The past three presidents signed similar reconciliation proclamations upon being sworn in.

If the correct meaning was said, regardless of the words, regardless of what was written, then the oath is valid.

If words conveying some meaning other than that of the written oath, then the oath would be questionable and wrong.

What was said, stumbles and all, conveyed the same meaning as the written traditional oath, so it is valid.

Israel changes the facts on the ground, militarily and diplomatically by David Bercuson

Some analysts may claim that the core of Hamas's military capability has survived in the bunkers and tunnels of Gaza City. Possibly. But the military initiative is now Israel's. The Israel Defence Forces set the agenda, drove the fight, kept the enemy on its heels, destroyed significant enemy capability (including many of the smuggling tunnels) and showed Hamas that IDF soldiers are now highly skilled in urban insurgent war. Israel now has the military initiative in the south and will set the terms. It is no longer merely Hamas's antagonist; it is its unquestioned military superior. The lesson will not be lost on Iran or Hezbollah.

Israel taught Hamas that no one but the Arab street really cares about the plight of Gaza under Hamas rule and, though noisy, the Arab street doesn't matter. No other country attacked Israel. Jordan maintained diplomatic relations. Iran fulminated but did nothing. Egypt, which once openly tolerated the tunnels, will no doubt clamp down hard on Hamas's smuggling. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was especially shrill in condemning Israel, but the $141-million Christmas deal between Israeli firms and the Turkish air force to upgrade Turkey's F-4 Phantoms remains intact.

Israel changed the facts on the ground diplomatically as it did militarily. It imposed its will on Hamas. And it has gained greater diplomatic leverage. Hamas has been humbled and with it, Hezbollah and Iran.

Amen.

Obama Enters the Great Game

The major challenge he faces is not Gaza; the Israeli-Palestinian dispute is not one any U.S. president intervenes in unless he wants to experience pain. As we have explained, that is an intractable conflict to which there is no real solution. Certainly, Obama will fight being drawn into mediating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during his first hundred days in office. He undoubtedly will send the obligatory Middle East envoy, who will spend time with all the parties, make suitable speeches and extract meaningless concessions from all sides. This envoy will establish some sort of process to which everyone will cynically commit, knowing it will go nowhere. Such a mission is not involvement — it is the alternative to involvement, and the reason presidents appoint Middle East envoys. Obama can avoid the Gaza crisis, and he will do so.

Report from Gen. Barry McCaffrey on Mexico

The incoming Obama Administration must immediately focus on the dangerous and worsening problems in Mexico, which fundamentally threaten US national security. Before the next eight years are past – the violent, warring collection of criminal drug cartels could overwhelm the institutions of the state and establish de facto control over broad regions of northern Mexico.

US intelligence is deeply worried about the possible collapse of two countries deemed to be of vital importance to US interests. One is Pakistan. The other is Mexico. Yes, Mexico.

IMHO, Roberts was the one who messed up. His timing was off right from the start and then he totally screwed up the "faithfully" line. It looked to me like a bit of nervousness.

As a matter of historical record, it's certainly inartful, but does it matter beyond that? No.

Roberts flubbed the second line, but obama stepped on the first line by repeating the line before Roberts had finished the line. Obama then flubbed the line by saying 'faithfully' after the United States.

This is my opinion, by the way and has no bearing on the legality of what was done,

In 1965 my family was visiting the Khyber Pass and my brothers and I were having great fun hopping back and forth across the border chanting: Now I'm in Pakistan, now I'm in Afghanistan . . . the guards became angry and threatened o lock us all up. Our dad made us sit int he car fro there4st of the visit. We thought that was overkill . . . just because the guards had real bullets in their guns and all didn't mean that they would really lock us up . . . right?

I've noticed that a sense of humor is a quality few border guards in any country have.

They won't stop terror because of Israeli military action. Terror is too easy and too cheap a tool to use, and until they (Hamas/extremists) are all dead or Israel is gone, they won't stop the attacks.

Sad but true. Israel will be dealing with people like that forever. The goal is to crush them to a level that is tolerable and get other nations (Syria, Iran, the rest of the Middle East) to stop supporting them.

When I saw it live, I was expecting Roberts to pause after saying Obama's name. It seems that is the natural timing that they've been using for the oath for the last several Presidents. I'll have to go back and listen to the oaths from Reagan on and see how they do it. Anyway, I believe he was supposed to pause there but didn't - and that's what messed up Obama jumping in.

The IDF demonstrated absolute mastery over Hamas. Recall the Hezbollah war, when several IDF tanks were destroyed or damaged? Not one was seriously hit in Gaza. Iran had boasted to Hamas they could help them do this. They failed.

Israel hammered Hamas for 19 days. Nobody came to their rescue. Nobody. Hamas was hammered. Iran was humiliated. And the Arab street knows it.

THEY BOTH SCREWED IT UP.

They should have practiced together until they got it right.

Then again, but for the Grace of God go i, so I ain't mad at any of them. bashing over this is silly. but they both screwed it up.

vxbush,

Obama still is called Senator, even if he isn't anymore, just as Bill Clinton is still called President. it seems weird, but it is normal speech. Of course after the oath was administered the right term is President Obama and so he will be for the rest of his life.

If the goal was to stop the attacks, that failed; Hamas is still firing mortars at Israel. In any other situation, that would be the end of the ceasefire, but not when Israel's involved. It will simply be ignored.

Israel's failures in the Hizbullah war were the result of political failures first and foremost. They were also dealing with a terror regime that had been preparing years for that moment. Hamas had far less time and capabilities at their disposal.

I find this whole thing fascinating. A little OT, but a related point:

I recently watched two documentaries on The History Channel, one about Siberia, and one about the construction of the railroad that crosses Canada. The experience of native people in the Canadian documentary just about completely mirrored the experience of them here (the herds they hunted were driven off, the were sent to the Canadian version of reservation land), and of course, the Siberian experience was far worse (tribal leaders who tried to negotiate with Stalin were imprisoned, some just plainly executed) - and yet, you'd think the only people in the world who were ever in conflict with Indian tribes were in the United States.

With the left, no matter what happens, there will always be a problem, and white Americans will always be at fault. And regardless of the circumstances, white Americans will always be the most evil bastards to ever occupy a portion of the planet.

I can't believe Obama allowed a slap at white people in the benediction of his own inaugural ceremony. Talk about irony.

So what if Hamas thugs say they won. They lost and the whole world saw them loose. What's more, they whole world saw that nobody came to help Hamas. Even Hamas does not believe they won. I see no reason why you should believe their bullshit.

Many years ago, in college, I witnessed a fight between an Iranian student and a good ol' Canuck from a mining town up north. The Iranian provoked the Canuck repeatedly until he couldn't ignore it anymore. The Canuck proceeded to beat the living snot out of the Iranian. It wasn't even close. The Iranian couldn't even contact with a single punch. When the Canuck tired of teaching the punk his lesson and walked away, the Iranian, who couldn't even stand up by this point, started shouting, "See you running away, I f*cking won, I beat you, youf*cking coward! ! F*ck You" and on he went. It didn't matter. He lost and everybody saw he lost.

But of course, this is not the last battle. More will come. This was only shaping the battlefield. The next phase will directly involve Iran.

Give it a couple of days. In the meantime, Israel is retaliating by hitting those launch sites. Hamas may need a few more remedial lessons. But like Hezbollah, they will be quiet for a while. The big difference is, Hezbollah has Syria supplying them across an open border. Hamas may find Egypt has decided to stop the weapons smuggling.

I see no benefit to joining with Hamas in agreeing they won. Hamas does not believe it & I fail to see why I should.

Who from the international community supported Hamas? Talk is cheap, and as Hamas learned, empty. Aside from the usual condemnations and hand wringing, nobody came to their aid. Nobody. Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan were notably unenthusiastic in their criticism of Israel and repeatedly blamed Hamas for the war. The IDF destroyed 80% of the tunnels,3/4's of their missiles, and killed several senior Hamas thugs. It is counter-factual to say Hamas retained "all of their power in Gaza".

I listened to it on the Internet (was hoping to find Rush carried by some website, but didn't), and my own, honest opinion, Obama flubbed it, not Roberts. Obama butted in before Roberts finished the first line. Then they were both out of whack from then on.

Interesting, I thought, Obama did not say the traditional last line "So help me God." As I understand it, that last line was added by George Washington during his first inauguration, and has been used by every president since. Obama sounded like he was caught off line by it.

Late to the inauguration party.

Missed the oath. Caught the speech.

Speech seemed flat in both delivery, and content.

One line did piss me off big time. IMHO opinion clarifies for me that BHO does not like this country, the things it has accomplished, the things it stands for.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things.

Yes, Mr. President we are a young nation in span of history. We however are not young it our government. Since our inception all other nations have changed their form of government, we are the longest standing form of government. Among governments we are the adults. We have set the mark and all other nations have in the last 200 years moved in our direction not the other way. In that time a competing way has arisen, socialism. And socialism has proven to be a bankrupt philosophy. The remainder of the Thugs left, paint their regimes with facade of what we established, holding faux elections.

Among deeds we have been the adults of the planet. Upholding liberty around the world time and again. Spending our blood, our treasure to secure the liberty of others. There is no more mature, adult, selfless deed than that.

What childish things would you have us put aside? Our rights? Life? Liberty? Property? Happiness? Those are far from childish. We should never, by any means put away those things. Those where bought with blood are the most precious things and in no way childish.

Should we put away the free capitalist economy? The very thing that propelled us to our economy place in the world. That individuals are free to presue their talents, dreams and abilities to the maximum extent. That these individuals take full responsibility and credit for there lives, failures, and success, that the product of their labor, toil and sweat is theirs and theirs alone. That is not childish.

Are you speaking of charity? No nation is more charitable than we, from blood spilled on foreign lands, to food and medicine sent to disaster areas no nation is more generous than we.

Calling our past childish is a deep insult to the founders, the generations that have upheld and fought for the ideals. It desecrates the blood of patriots who died to establish and protect his nation.

I find this line most telling on the inner thoughts of our President. I find the line deeply disturbing.

They both flubbed it, but Roberts flubbed it more.

Here is the correct oath:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

In addition to the misplaced adverb "faithfully", which they both screwed up, Roberts further screwed up the oath by calling the office "President to the United States".

I guess they were nervous.///

re: #399 Iron Fist

Interesting anecdote, but we are drifting from the issue. Hamas lost this battle, but it was only one battle in the slow war. The next battle might be against Hamas again, or Hezbollah, or Syria or Iran. Or a combination.

Interesting detail here:

The Iranian Defense Minister went to Syria, to pressure the Hamas leadership-in-exile (who have veto power over the Hamas leaders in Gaza) to not accept any ceasefire deal with Israel. The Hamas leaders in Gaza want to cut a deal, because the Israeli ground invasion quickly revealed that Hamas fighters were no match for Israeli troops. The Israelis were much more aggressive than they were two years ago in southern Lebanon, and quickly killed any Hamas fighters they encountered, including a special unit of about a hundred fighters that had received combat training in Iran. As a result, most of the claimed 20,000 Hamas gunmen have deserted their units, leaving only some of the officers (5-10 percent of each unit) to carry on. By the second week of January, Israeli troops were mainly encountering Hamas officers in combat. This was very embarrassing for Iran, which had promised to turn Hamas into a crack fighting force. Back in Iran, this failure was blamed on the Arabs, who Iranians generally despise as lazy and stupid. In the Arab media, Iran is accused to sabotaging Hamas and causing the battlefield failures.

On the battlefield, Hamas were beaten in every encounter with the IDF. Most of the 1000+ Hamas killed were their best fighters, as the raw recruits ran away. Israel learned from their difficulties against Hezbollah in 2006. Iran had promised to make Hamas a superior fighting force. But they failed spectacularly. Not one IDF tank was seriously hit. Hamas was hammered & Iran was humiliated. And for a bonus, the Arab world is even more united against Iran.

I don't have to like it, but I do have to tell the truth. This incursion (calling it a "war" is an insult to real wars) has done more for the popular support of Hamas than anything else Israel could have done.
Much of the stench of defeat could be erased if just once Israel actually achieved one of it's goals for once and for all. Refusing to allow Hamas to imprison, and no doubt brutalize, Gilad Shalit would be a sign that Israel has learned the error of their ways, but that didn't happen.

Those flags and the creeps who waved them were already here. I don't think their numbers have increased.

The bottom line is Iran promised Hamas to turn them into a powerful fighting force. They failed. Israel demonstrated excellence as a superior military force. No country came to Hamas' aid. The Arab world blamed Hamas and is now more united against Iran than before. The UN proved it is even more useless & irrelevant than ever before.

As for so called "popular support", the Arab street is overrated in importance, and is very fickle. Force is respected, weakness is shunned. Hamas has been shown to be weak.

So what if a few jerks in London waved a Hamas flag? Feh!

Sorry not to read the entire thread, but I have to agree with those who point out that BO interrupted Chief Justice Roberts to start reciting right after his magnificent name was read. It threw the Chief Justice off, and it confirmed everything I already believe about our new President. He's so arrogant that he doesn't listen to anyone else and he's totally self-absorbed. The fact that he has now chosen to use his middle name "as an olive branch to the muslims" tells me he's coming out of the closet, as evidenced by "Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus..." Bastard now puts my people after the muslims.

Pop quiz: What was the ethnicity of the 3 civil rights workers murdered in Mississippi while registering African American voters, helping pave the way for an African American president?

Answer: 1 African American, 2 Jews. Nope, not one single muslim.

420 tbarney  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 2:06:42pm

BHO may have handled it with dignity, but W (or RR) would have found a way, as soon as practical, to make a warm, self-deprecating remark, a quick quip to indicate an attitude of "stuff happens, we're human, you're still a good man, it was probably my fault." (Especially if it obviously wasn't his fault.) W couldn't speechify off the cuff, but he could speak from the heart a whole lot better, that's for sure.

In all fairness, muslim isn't an ethnicity, and that African American could have been a muslim, since you mention Jew in the racial/ethnic sense and not religious in that context. Point is still valid, however.

422 mommydoc  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 3:01:33pm

robdouth, not really sure whatthehell your point is, since much of the world speaks of the "Jewish race" and calls antimuslim sentiment "racist." Nonetheless, James Chaney was indeed Christian and even Wikipedia refers to Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman as "New York State Jewish-Americans."

It doesn't change for a second the fact that US Jews were very much at the forefront of the civil rights movement, and, in fact, gave their lives defending the rights of African Americans to vote, and now an African American president gives muslims, who did and continue to sell kafir Africans into slavery, more importance than Jews.

They are not "new" supporters of Hamas, they have just clearly shown themselves to be supporters of a terrorist organisation and plain old Jew-haters. Muslims in Europe have always been supporters of whoever is against Israel. Lots of non-Muslims in Europe have now forcefully been confronted with the fact that all those so-called moderate, well integrated Muslims are a fifth column and that our governments are cowards and don't want to deal with the problem. Nice wake-up call. Wait for the effect of that to trickle down during future elections.

425 Charles Johnson  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 3:55:49pm

I think Roberts paused slightly after Obama's name and Obama thought it was time for him to repeat. It's sort of customary to pause after that first phrase: "I, Barack Hussein Obama...." I'll bet Obama rehearsed it that way.

In any case, Roberts definitely got the oath wrong--the word "faithfully" was in the wrong spot--and it's pretty obvious that Obama paused at that point to let him correct it. But Roberts got it wrong a second time, at which point Obama just repeated the first thing Roberts had said. Which was wrong.

Much ado about nothing. There will be plenty to bash the big O about, but this ain't it.

It asks me if I want to keep running scripts on that page.

I still think he's an arrogant, self-absorbed not-so-closet socialist, but he's now my president and he has my loyalty. And my fervent prayer that he'll prove to be better for this country than I think he will be.

427 mommydoc  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 4:46:28pm

And, proving my point that Obama is already showing signs of throwing the Jews who helped make him under the bus, with the help of the MSM, is the piece ABC just ran on the Mikva Challenge students from Chicago's South Side who came to the inauguration all full of hope for their future in politics. Most of them too young to vote themselves, they registered voters to vote for Obama.

I was intrigued by the name, since the only mikvah I know about is the Jewish ritual bath. Looky here:

The Mikva Challenge is a nonpartisan 501(c)3 organization that prioritizes the development of civic leadership in underserved Chicago high school youth. Mikva Challenge was founded in 1997 as a tribute to former White House Counsel, Judge and U.S. Congressman Abner Mikva and his wife Zoe, a lifelong education activist. We help low-income Chicago youth become meaningful actors in politics and, by doing so, we honor the Mikvas’ decades of inspiring young adults to embark on careers in public service and politics.

And who is Abner Mikva?

A belated "Thank You" to Charles for posting this. I finally got a chance to look at it, and was curious as to the real story after hearing so many different versions.

For the record, I don't think anybody on here quite got the story right.

1) Roberts didn't pause after Obama's name, which is where they customarily pause, but paused long enough before the next word that Obama reasonably assumed that it was his turn and he started. Roberts didn't have the presence of mind to realize that he should then stop, and so he kept on going, and they ended up speaking at the same time. So Obama started from scratch. The mix-up probably threw Roberts off.

2) Roberts then blew the phrase "that I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully", by putting the word "faithfully" at the end, rather than before "execute". He also screwed up by saying "President to" instead of "President of".

3) When Obama followed along, and got to the word "execute", it sounds to me like he said to himself, "Wait. That's not right." And so he paused.

4) By then I think they both realized it was f-ed up. So Roberts tried damage control by putting "faithful" next (instead of where he had put it the first time), even though it has to go before the "execute", which had already just been said. Obama, rather than process that, and adopt Roberts new plan, simply kept to Roberts' original line.

In summary, Roberts screwed up the rhythm by not pausing at the usual spot and by continuing on while Obama spoke. Then got flustered and screwed up the next phrase. Obama didn't "correct the error" as some had claimed, but I think he clearly recognized it. He was just too late to fix it.

BTW, the Constitution says, "Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation: - " So call him the President or not, he doesn't (technically) have the authority to do anything until he takes the oath.
