Congress Gives Itself a $93,000 Raise
Banks closing, millions of homes in foreclosure, a major recession; so what does the Democrat-controlled Congress do? They give every member an extra $93,000 in petty cash.

According to a Congressional Record Service dated November 26, 2008, lawmakers will receive a 2.8 percent increase in pay next year, from $169,300 to $174,000.
Meanwhile, a senior receiving average benefits will get a $63 monthly increase to just $1,153 per month next year, bringing their annual total to $13,836. An estimated 12 percent of all seniors are living at or below the poverty line, and one-third of all beneficiaries depend on Social Security for 90 percent or more of their income.

The guy in the video that says we ought not have a Congress has it almost correct. As voters, we should do away with ALL professional career politicians in Congress at the very next election. We have it in our power to do so and, most importantly, we do not NEED any of these people. There are well over 300 million Americans from which to pick another 535 for the House and Senate. Our current "reprehensibles" should be put out to pasture as soon as possible.

The doublethink is the effort we have to make to understand why the two contradict each other and yet both are correct. For his followers, though, it's a simple thing; practice make perfect.

To a Marxist the masses are a herd animal, to be studied, exploited, used and thrown away.
Which is why they fear and study the middle class, the religious, and the libertarian. These groups, and others, refuse to fuse with the masses; they are a heterogeneous element. When you're trying to break the social order down into the leaders and the people, these elements become very troublesome.
Soviet Union had a technique they used - famine, purges, death.
Red Guard had their ways - beatings, torture, death
Khmer Rouge had their ways - torture, death
I think these new guys aren't gonna go all "terminal" like these others. With careful work and study, I'm sure they'll figure out a way to milk every last drop of wealth and wealth-creation from these "class enemies" without having to destroy the only productive elements within society.
So, higher taxes, more burdensome regulation, and ongoing vilification are the words of the day. Confiscation (already proposed for businesses that go off-shore) can't be too far behind.

Let's not forget what we've learned over the past 8 years:
"He's not MY President, and never will be."
- Julia Roberts
"Dissent is the highest form of patriotism."
- Howard Zinn
"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic."

The American people elected Obama hoping for positive change. Even Peggy Noonan bemoans his "missed opportunity" with the stimulus bill. She calls the congressional Democrats "slobs".

Obama brother arrested over cannabis possession
NAIROBI (AFP) — US President Barack Obama's Kenyan half brother George was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis, police sources said Saturday.
George Obama was arrested on Friday with cannabis, known locally as bhang, and was placed in custody, a senior police officer told AFP on condition of anonymity.
"He was picked up in Nairobi's Huruma area with three other young men," the officer said, adding they were due to appear in court on Monday.
In his memoir, the new US president describes meeting his half brother as "a painful affair". George Obama was one of the few close relatives who did not attend the president's January 20 inauguration ceremony in Washington.

Mark Steyn predicted today's Drudge headline one month ago.
From a link there:
"For Democrats, toughness is reserved only for domestic opponents - not foreign enemies. The domestic enemy (capitalists, homeschoolers, Christians, crime victims, taxpayers, boy scouts, heterosexuals, flag wavers, etc.) must be fought "on the beaches," "in the fields," "in the streets" and "in the hills." The left "shall never surrender."
But with foreign opponents, all such toughness disappears. Obama wants only to meet with foreign dictators and terror supporters, no matter how odious and no matter how counterproductive such meetings will be. To Chavez, Ahmedinejad and Kim Jong Il, Obama offers neither a knife fight nor a gun fight. The knives and guns are reserved solely for Americans. In response to Kim Jong Il's endorsement of Obama, Obama supporters in this country - instead of pausing to rethink their positions in light of such foul company - immediately prayed for the death of Michelle Malkin. Such policy is not unique to Obama or to 2008."

That will get very messy. The fight over such issues as abortion and handgun possession alone would make forging a new Constitution that everyone can live with pretty much impossible. This will happen at a grass roots level even if the Republicans pussy out like they usually do when confronted with recalcitrant Democrats.
I don't think that, as a practical matter, it could be done again. The Union would be irrevocably shattered as Left Coast and northeast Blue States enact far Left laws and try to impose them on the rest of the nation, while the Red heartland would try to install a Right to Life policy that the Left would find intolerable.
It'd be like the gay marriage debate, only writ large; instead of effecting less than 5% of the population it will drastically impact 95% of the population (or even more than 95%). As I've said before, when Democrats use the term "bipartisan" they really mean that the Republicans give them everything they want, and the Republicans get nothing of any real value in return.
That dog won't hunt, if we are trying to reunite a splintered Union.
I was speaking of a return to original principals.... not an EU constitution.
But I'm an eternal optimist.

While I do not partake, myself, due to job requirements, I absolutely agree with you. I think it should be legal, like alcohol. The apparently silly marijuana laws, though, serve a purpose, and it is of gaining more power over the citizens. Make enough people into criminals, and you can control them. Hence, all the stupid laws and regulations that are being passed, left and right. All for "our own good", of course.

Congress is doing this at the first opportunity, because in 2 years, when many are up for re-election, any bringing up of this by their opponents will meet again with American indifference to "old news." That is, if it is even reported.
Does anyone remember how Clinton ran the first time on lowering taxes, and what--5 minutes?--after he was sworn in, he found, to his sorrow, that he could not cut taxes? Did anyone call him out on his lies 4 years later? We did not. We are enthralled with the bright shiny object the magician is waving in front of our eyes, whether it is a new cell phone or a veritably unknown but plausible candidate for POTUS, or any other seat, for that matter.
The flaw is human nature, and our child-like enthrallment with shiny surfaces. The result is not just the current administration, but much of our financial straits, too. God, I wish I could see this when I was younger; I do better now, but when I'm almost irrelevant.

OK, getting closer. Each Congressman gets a Member's Representational Allowance of about $1.5 million to pay for staff wages, office expenses, mailing travel and the rest. There is a automatic increase cost of living increase each 1 January for both their pay and Member's Representational Allowance that they'd have to vote not to accept.
The $93,000 appears to be that adjustment, but can't find anything that tells me how Fox arrived at that figure.
The only thing I do know, is that's it's not a raise. They have to report every dime spent on staff wages and the rest and as far as I can tell, it was not a new bill that wa passed under Obama.

Marijuana is a part of that, but not the large part. To destroy that trade by legalizing the substances, you also have to include the "hard stuff", like cocaine, heroin, and so forth.

Yes, the prospect of "hard" drugs hitting the market openly is a bit scary to me as well. However... people who want them already have them. There may be arguments made about these freaks being out on roads, driving, whatever... But they already do that. One can draw a parallel in relation to murder... However, do we really believe that the fact that murder is illegal is more of a deterrent than the fact that murder is immoral? Murder and self-destruction by drugs are two different things. Now, if ones drug-use negatively affects others, he or she should be punished, severely, but if they are only hurting themselves?
The point I am trying to make is, why have "for your own good" laws? Why not have sensible laws that concern the impact one's behavior has on others? What do I care if some idiot decides to OD on heroin in his house, with just the cockroaches to see the spectacle? As long as he did not hurt anyone else, what is the harm? I hear you, but I'm sot so sure the republicturds wouldn't pull the same shit if they were running the show. Remember, if they weren't such pigs themselves, we wouldn't b in this mess, with a Dem. congress, senate and White house. In my book ALL politicians are the enemy. I'm also not so sure that the republicans recent growing of testicles isn't just politicking, instead of getting back to conservative ideals.

I have children (now fully grown, over 30) whose lives were affected dramatically when their "friends" in high school OD'd and in one case committed suicide. Took years for them to put the image away. (If they have.)
I have watched friends of my own destroy themselves, and I have watched familes and parents disentegrate because of that.
Allowing it to happen legally is no remedy in my mind.
I am so terribly sorry to hear that. No one should be witness to something like that. Of course, events like that always should be taken into consideration. But, substances that are already legal, such as alcohol and prescription painkillers are causing exactly the same damage, as we speak.

frogmarch ...chemo is a slow death to bring you back to life ...I long for the day when we find a cure for all cancers ...
jwb ...so glad you are better ...
This wasn't the "normal chemo". I had bladder cancer. What the 'cure' is involves running a tube up your d*ck, and putting some really nasty chemical straight into your bladder.
You "hold it in" for 3 hours, lying on each side, back, stomach so the chemical soaks in to all sides.
Then, you get to pee blood for six hours and it burns like hell for 3 days. You have to Clorox the toilet for the next 48 hours after this, because the chemical can/will cause tuberculosis for the next user otherwise.
I was grooving on the peeing blood stuff. Before that I was so freaked I was getting sick to my stomach.

re: #79 littleoldlady I totally remember that. One who was voted in over and over again got the boot. He is now being investigated for criminal behavior. One other, that is a near and dear friend of mine, actually gave his BACK. But, alas, he is in trouble too now since he was a partner of the person I mentioned above. There was a huge shift here, at least on MY side of the state. Murtha's district? IDK what the hell is wrong there.

The MSM won't think it's news. The difference between the scheduled increase in the 1.5 million budget per congressman is small and and has to be spent on constituent service and took place before Obama. Not that much heat in the story over going from 3% increase to 5 or 6 % especially the way they'll sell it.

Exactly my point, the Repubs and Dems are essentially indestiguishable. Even GWB, who I will always admire and respect for keeping us safe and ignoring world opinion on matters of national security, spent like a drunken sailor (AKA a Democrat) and never vetoed pork ladden legislation and massive government spending. We needed spending cuts combined with tax cuts.

Pre Obama. So what. B Hussein was working with the Dems on the economy well before the 20th. His Dems control Congress and could have rejected it. Furthermore, B Hussein could publicly chastise them and insist they give it back. He had no trouble making Citibank give back their jet.

Have you seen that commercial where the lady said she woke up from surgery, the doctor looked at her, and said "You have cancer", then left?
Brings back memories, kind of, because in my case, the doctor was talking to my wife about my chances of survival. He said "very small", and left.

Yes I have ...and I turn off any commericals for anything to do with cancer ... or any shows on it ... I watched more comedy movies when I was sick than you can imagine ... my family made me laugh so much and it was hard to laugh with your tongue about two inches thick ... my mother mainly took care of me and she was one tough ass woman ...she acted tough but I could hear her crying quietly sometimes at night ... as hard as it is when it is you ...I bet it is twice as hard when it is your child ...for me life now is a bonus ...I have lived ...I just want to stay around for awhile for the kids ...and I still watch many many funny movies ...so glad you made it too ...

Are you kidding me? I worked for the government for far too long to pretend to be naive anymore.
"Constituent Services" means many things, especially if you're a career politician.
This story has heat because you have grand hypocrisy here. One group is pointing their finger at another group saying "shame on you," when they are guilty of the very same thing. It's simple and the American people will listen if we can only get the message out to them.

It should be a law that BEFORE congress gets a raise ...they must send out a letter to all persons in their district advising them of what they are going to attempt ...because most Americans are not aware ...for whatever reason ...about congress salaries ...
Apparently even our founding fathers were afraid of the backlash. This particular amendment was one of the original 12 that became our Bill of Rights. This amendment and one other was not approved way back then.

A friend sent this quote from his former pastor he had back in the 1960's:
"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

Open Letter to Sen. Patty Murray:
I really appreciate the work that you are doing to help the economy along now that I have been laid off. If you see fit, I would like to borrow 55% of your pay raise so that I can also help out stimulating the economy. With that I could purchase food to stimulate the grocery business, clothing to stimulate the garment industry and pay the mortgage on my house for the housing industry. I know that you really want to help the economy and so do I. So with both of us working to that end we can stop this recession and move on to prosperity. I believe that you are kind hearted enough to help.
Thank you for all your work for the people of Washington State. I look forward to hearing from you soon and will be looking for my check in the mail.
Best wishes

What's the big deal? All we have to do is to look at the annual expense/expenditure report each congressperson files and that'll tell us how each of them is spending their allocation! Jeez, what's so bad about that? Jeez, all we have to do is to focus on the creeps who are spending their allocated funds on frivolous items.
Jeez, what's the problem since we've got so much transparency and everything is so above board.

This is probably a dead thread, but I just read on The Hill that the O is offering the position of Secretary of Commerce to Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H. The obvious tactic, if Gregg accepts, is to have a democrat appointed in his place - hence a super-majority!

I found some more information at Roll Call:
In an apparent reaction to the economic crisis facing the country, the House has decided to increase the allowances of Members of Congress so they can spend more money representing their constituents.
According to several Congressional sources, the House Administration Committee has alerted Members that their office accounts will increase by an average of $90,000 this year, an overall increase of about $40 million and significantly more that the increases of recent years.Every year, each House Member is provided a Member Representational Allowance, which pays for staff salaries, mailing costs, office supplies and the other miscellaneous costs of running a Congressional office. The amount allotted to each Member varies based on how far they have to travel to and from their district and other factors, but in 2008, the allowances ranged from $1.3 million to $1.6 million for each office, according to the Congressional Research Service.
In recent years, the MRAs have increased each year by about $25,000-$30,000 per office, several sources said, making this year’s increase remarkable.
“As a result of the current economic crisis, more pressure than ever is being placed on Member’s district offices to ensure that they have the necessary resources as they work to address expanded constituent needs,” Kyle Anderson, spokesman for the House Administration Committee Democrats, said in an e-mail to Roll Call. “Additionally, unprecedented increases in travel expenses, district office utilities and other related operational expenses must be incorporated into Member’s Representational Allowances.
“Failure to address these rising expenses could result in resources having to be diverted from key areas such as constituent service and Member outreach. The increase in the MRA will allow Member’s offices to continue to effectively serve their constituents during this difficult period.”
One House Republican chief of staff said that in his four years in the job “we’ve certainly never had a bump that big ... and it was not what I was expecting. We probably won’t use it all.”
The increases are still only projected numbers, Anderson said, based on anticipated appropriations for 2009 and 2010. The Appropriations Committee has traditionally approved a little less than the full amount the House Administration Committee has suggested, so the final number may be slightly lower, several staff members said.
And some Members make a practice of spending less than they are given each year. Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.) made a pledge to hand back money every year, and spokeswoman Anne Lupardus Hanson said that with the $82,000 he returned at the end of 2008, Kind has now given back more than $1 million to the U.S. Treasury in his six terms.

Now it all makes sense:
Although there were exceptions to the rule, the average Republican generally spent less (92.8 percent of the MRA) to run his or her office in 2005 than the average Democrat (95.9 percent of the MRA). However, partisan differences were sharper on the ends of the scale. Of the 50 top office spenders (on a percentage- of-MRA-spent basis), 37 were Democrats. Of the 50 most frugal office spenders, 38 were Republicans. In one category -- spending on franked mail postage -- Republicans represented 29 of the top 50 (when adjusted to cost per address).
