Science • Views: 3,152

Space shuttle Atlantis is about to latch onto the Hubble Space Telescope to begin its repair mission; here’s the live feed from NASA TV as Atlantis approaches the telescope:

[Live feed now disabled…]

UPDATE at 5/13/09 10:17:48 am:

It’s so cool to watch this live — the shuttle has successfully used its grappling hook to grab the HST, and the repair mission can now proceed.

Thanks Charles...this is amazing.

I've had this up for the last hour. They've had to do some wild loop-de-loop maneuvers to get into place.

Its nice, but its no buzzing prayer rug.

Best of luck on the repairs, and wishing a safe return to the crew.

Keep in mind that while the video shows that both the shuttle and Hubble are moving slowly relative to each other - both are zooming around the planet at an astounding ~17,500 mph.

This is nail-biting stuff, though. They send out that arm at just the wrong angle, and they either ruin Hubble or they send it off on a trajectory in the deep space. It has to be perfect.

I hope the astronaut running the arm has on some heavy-duty deodorant.

25 WWID  Wed, May 13, 2009 9:54:58am

Then re: #22 lawhawk

Then again, we on Earth are hurtling even faster through space, and our solar system is moving even faster than that. It's all quite relative.

The orbital speed depends on radius.
Yes, an object is always falling.
What makes it an orbit is that it misses the Earth. That is, its speed is such that instead of hitting the Earth, it ends up as far away from the Earth as it was earlier.
This is hard to explain without "visual aids", though.
Let me see if I can do it in text "art"
Start:
O-->

--- ground

Later
---
---
--- O
--- %P%
--- V

That is, by the later picture, it is as far from the earth as it was in the first one, but it has not only "fallen" well below where the ground would have been if Earth were flat, but it has moved as far away from the surface as it was (for a circular orbit)

As I watch this, some much needed improvements to the space program have become obvious to me:

1) Where is my picture?

2) Those big blue desk thingys that the engineers sit behind don't look cool enough. They should be transparent acrylic with cool apple monitors on them.

3) All the engineers need a makeover. They need longer hair and tats.

4) Where is my picture?

5) Dead air - what is with that? These geeks come on and talk once in a while but there is dead air in between. Maybe an announcer should come on in between and talk about how wonderful I am.

6) Atlantis? Didn't that sink? Why that name? I think "Ostranomy 1" would be a better name for a ship that works on telescope.

7) Hubble? That name makes me think of fat white guys watching NASCAR. We need to rename it "Ostronomy scOpe 1".

8) Where is my picture?

9) The cameraman sucks. Got steadycam? I should get my buds in HWood on this one.

10) Change!

10)

Hubble has a lot of mass, it would weigh 24,000 lbs on earth.

The arm is very slender on earth the arm can't lift itself. So pulling Hubble into the shuttle is a slow operation. With Hubble's mass they can't accelerate Hubble very much while moving it lest they break the arm.

No. First, orbits are longer than an hour, and it is the circumference of the orbit divided by the orbital period that gives the speed.

The higher the orbit, the longer the circumference - but the slower the orbital velocity. At around 23,000 miles, the orbit takes 24 hours, keeping the object over the same spot on Earth. That is the geostationary orbit communication satellites use.

re: #71 cheesehead

Can someone explain in simple terms why an object needs to reach 17,500 MPH in order to reach and maintain orbit? What is it about that particular speed? Also, is it true that objects in orbit are actually in a perpetual fall-back to Earth? Thanks.

Its not a magic number for an orbit, the value will change based on the altitude you want to orbit at. It is true that in orbit an object is in perpetual freefall. The way to think about it is as if you had a ball on the end of a string and were to swing it over your head. The string is always exerting a force on the ball directed back to the center. Assuming you swing the ball faster, the force on the string will increase.

In space gravity replaces the string, always pulling the object back twords the center of the earth. For a circular orbit to be stable the force provided by gravity must be just enough to keep the satalite at the same elevation. If the satalite is moving too slow, gravity will pull it back to earth, if it moves too fast, it will move farther from earth, possible to a higher orbit.

The force required to keep something moving in a circle (string or gravity) is Mass of the object * Velocity of the object^2/Radius of the circle. For a stable orbit, this must equal gravitational force which is equal to G (Mass of the Earth)(Mass of the obect)/Radius of orbit^2
or
Mo V^2 = G Me Mo
------- --------
R R^2

Note that the mass of the object appears on the top of both sides so it cancels out...

So what's the deal now? They're having trouble communicating with HST?

They missed a confirmation that the attitude jets on the HST were offline. I think the shuttle is blocking the signal, so they're going to switch to a different antenna and spin the shuttle around.

I think that may be true. When he had a chance to block it, he didn't.
If he is serious the government will have to appeal. If he does that, then I would sy that he means it, for whatever reason.

I think he is just playing both sides of the fence on this. He will make all kinds of noise but not actually do anything to stop the release of the photos. That way they will in fact be released and if/when anything bad happens he can say he tried to stop it but he lost.

FWIW I'm friends with the great grandson of the guy who first wrote about geostationary orbit, Hermann Oberth.

[Link: celestrak.com...]

"In the 1920s, Hermann Oberth and Herman Potocnik—perhaps better known by his pseudonym, Herman Noordung—wrote about space stations which maintained a unique vantage over the earth.1 Each author described an orbit at an altitude of 35,900 kilometers whose period exactly matched the earth's rotational period, making it appear to hover over a fixed point on the earth's equator."

His grandfather was called the father of modern rocketry and his grand son is still working on them - top secret stuff on missile defense.

in turns simple terms if you tie a weight to a string and swing it the shorter the string the faster you have to swing it to keep it from falling.

re: #191 Honorary Yooper

I hope they got moving on its replacement a bit faster. I think I like the new Orion craft a bit better than the Shuttle.

I'm just an armchair enthusiast, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. Personally, I consider Orion a stopgap vehicle. I don't consider it an advancement in technology or capability. Project Constellation was deigned around a return to the moon, and the fulfillment of our commitment to the IIS. When NASA asks the question of how to return to the moon, it's Mother Nature is calling the shots, so it's not surprising when the answer resembles the Apollo program.

I'm not saying this it is necessarily the wrong thing to do or that Project Constellation is bad. I believe there is strategic importance to manned access to space, and if the Orion capsule and Ares rockets are what we can afford given current budgetary constraints to preserve our access to space, then I support them. To me, though, they don't represent an evolutionary advance in technology. They are a re-implementation of an older technology using modern materials and design methods. I heartily agree that there is value in a proven design. However, from a purely emotional standpoint I find them unsatisfying.

I think we would have been better off with a guaranteed buy of spacecraft that met specs, not a government design, from several companies.
Maybe some government money for companies that had a good chance of succeeding; better use of money than the GM bailout.
Instead of advancing spacecraft engineering, we're going backwards.

The problem with the Shuttle, though, is that to get the support it needed, it had to do too much in too few steps. Kind of like if the Wright Brothers needed government money to develop their 2nd airplane, and they were told it had to carry 20 tons and 50 people cross country, or they wouldn't get any money.
It took many years and many incremental steps to develop an aircraft that could do that, and we need to take the same approach with space. The only way for that to happen, though, is for there to be a market for many different private efforts, so different designs and ideas get tested in the marketplace, not in government contract negotiations. Gradually, the best ideas will be combined into a spacecraft that is reliable and efficient.

Luton mosque attack update.....
Was Islamic Centre torching a revenge attack after parade?

The secretary of Luton's Islamic Centre which was torched by arsonists last week has said he believes the attack was an act of revenge after Muslim extremists protested at a soldiers' homecoming parade.

Farasat Latif said the religious centre had banned the extremist group from its three-storey building in Bury Park Road five years ago, but has still been targeted.
....
Detectives are now appealing for two men, who are believed to have helped put out the flames, to come forward and help with the investigation.

The men, who are both of Asian appearance and in their early 20s, were in the area at the time of the fire and told a resident that they had seen two men running away from the scene.

If you are one of the two men, or you can identify them, contact Det Con Dale Mepstead on xxx-xxx-xxxc or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on xxxxx xxx xxxx.

The two guys who claimed to have been trying to put out the fire still haven't come forward. It's looking increasingly likely that the fire might have been started by a member of the Muslim community. Possibly the extremists who protested the troops.

Gates’s ax severs McKiernan’s neck

Westhawk has some interesting observastions & the questions this move raises:

The decision reflects a belief that the war in Afghanistan has grown so complex that it needs a commander drawn from the military’s unconventional warfare branch.

That last sentence brings to mind a few questions:

1) What are the criteria for determining when a war has “grown so complex that it needs a commander drawn from the military’s unconventional warfare branch”?

2) By Gates’s standards are any commanders from general purpose backgrounds eligible for top command in today’s circumstances? Should Mullen and Petraeus consider acquiring some packing boxes?

I read that as the two men of "Asian" appearance saw two OTHER men running away from the scene. Truth or deflection? So hard to tell nowadays.

Pope tells Palestinians hopes wall will come down

Pope Benedict told Palestinians in Bethlehem on Wednesday that he hoped the wall Israel has built in and round the West Bank would be taken down.

"I have seen, ... overshadowing much of Bethlehem, the wall that intrudes into your territories, separating neighbors and dividing families," the pope said before leaving the town where Jesus was born. "Although walls can be easily built, we all know that they do not last forever. The can be taken down."

Stressing the need first to remove "the walls that we build around our hearts" and bring conflict to an end, he said: "My earnest wish for you, the people of Palestine, is that this will happen soon, and that you will at last be able to enjoy the peace, freedom and stability that have eluded you for so long."

Same here. Although over an extended period of unemployment, I started teaching at an online university, and still do (math and astronomy), so the degrees came in useful there.

This broadcast is probably on Nork TV right now with all the NASA logos blacked out and the controllers dubbed over with Korean voices.

We are talking about a country that has a statue of OUR Space Shuttle on display, implying that it's a North Korean achievement.

Wow. You learn something new every day.

[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]

The lobby of the Children's Palace is a monstrosity in marble and chandeliers. In it stands a model - some 20 foot high - of the space shuttle on its launch pad.

In a strange fantasy of technology and power, the space shuttle has become North Korean. It has North Korean insignia on it and North Korean slogans. There is no reference to its true origins at all.

In general, yes. The solarsystem, the sun and planets rotate counter-clockwise. This is a result of the angular momentum conserved by the sun and planets during the formation of the solar system. The exceptions are Venus which has a very slow clockwise rotation, and Uranus whose axial tilt is so extreme is it rotating at almost 90 degs from the rest of the planets.

I taught in a community college; math isn't the most interesting subject to them.
But teaching adults online is different; they want to be there, or they just stop showing up.
The pay isn't great, but how many jobs can you do whenever you want, with the TV on and a couple of dogs to pet. (Pet the dogs when I'm frustrated, and then the student gets a nicer answer.)

I'm going to have to look that up. I can see why you'd get the opposite direction, though.

re: #328 JustABill

I got a question for you. In general do the orbits of the moons in the solar system rotate in the same direction as the planets rotate around the sun? If so, why?

From the point of view of the north celestial pole, all the major planets orbit the sun counterclockwise together with their moons, if any. The moons themselves are rotating about each planet, in addition to moving with the planet round the sun. Most of the major moons rotate around the planets in the same direction as the planet is rotating. There are some exceptions, however. I think that Triton, a moon of Neptune goes around Neptune in the opposite direction, and some of the smaller moons of Jupiter do the same.

As for planets rotating on their axes, all except Uranus and Venus spin counterclockwise.

Did I answer your question?

335 SFGoth  Wed, May 13, 2009 2:34:50pm

Hmmm, any other 6,000 year old planets out there? Maybe Hubble can find the purpose of the GOP.

336 Jesse  Thu, May 14, 2009 9:23:54am

I started working on Hubble Command and Data Handling components at Fairchild Space and Defense Company back in 1980, long before it was launched. It's very gratifying to see that this machine was so well made (despite the mirror screwup) that it is still a useful tool to Astronomers long after it's projected "End of Life".

One of NASA's great accomplishments. The taxpayers got their money's worth out of this system to be sure.
