The Blumenthal book lays out the connections between the Rushdoony cult, the Frances Schaeffer weirdos, Dobson, Falwell, etc. -- and their scary influence on the modern GOP.
He did a really good job. It's disturbing to see it all laid out like this.

When you make social conservatism the center of your party, it only invites sex scandals every election year. Some of the "family values" the GOP is currently supporting are not possible to adhere to for the majority of the populace.
It's ok to have a diverse party, just not one based primarily on this stuff.

Without meaning to intentionally cause offense:
Why can't the republicans mind their own FUCKING bizness w.r.t. a person's individual moral framework and simply concern themselves with running a small, efficient, highly effective government that maximizes individual freedom and individual responsibility? Ya know - the 'provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and ensure the liberties' etc etc stuff?

Have you read Kejda's "Beyond Conservatism: Freedom in a Godless Future" before?
[Link: www.kejda.net...]
Social Conservatives seeking to use government to legislate morality to the masses have been poisoning the well for too long by destroying the consistency of negative rights, thus opening the door to government co-optation by demagogues with various agendas and malignant vested interests from all sides of the political spectrum. Their religiously inspired diatribes against full American freedoms continue to alienate people in droves, particularly because most Americans today are rightfully oversensitive regarding matters of conscience, religion, social institutions, and private behavior.
Until it extirpates this reactionary faction, the Conservative movement’s defense of free markets is hopelessly doomed to intellectual impotence. Economic self-reliance through free proud enterprise on the one hand, but moral paternalism in matters confined to the bedroom or uterus on the other hand, are ideologically irreconcilable positions both of which sound hypocritical when preached by the same voice.

I use NoScript, and it is one of the first things I check. Maybe there should be a standard note to try "temporarily allow all on page" before reporting a bug.
I use it because it defends against malicious sites, and also really cuts down on the crashes due to bad Flash ads.

Taking sides in the Culture Wars. The modern reality of American politics. It's the reason Charles is getting whipsawed by the Left (Muslim baiter!) and by the Right (traitor!).
You just can't win with the whacks on either fringe. It's why I am comfortable here. There are some people on the board who can't abide me (Hello, Gabby Johnson!), but by and large, the ad hominem attacks have significantly decreased as the Rads have flounced or been whacked. It's nicer here, now. You can discuss issues with some expectation of civil give and take.

A waste of $15 IMHO. He wrote this when Obama was flying high and the vultures were circling. Too bad for him the lifeless corpse is not so lifeless now. Gould was one of the great science writers for the public. He made evolutionary theory not only accessible, but lyrical. He was never the in-your-face atheist that Dawkins has become (which is a shame, because Dawkins, as a science writer, is also killler bee - read The Ancestor's Tale for the most cogent explanation of modern evolutionary thinking available).

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Lord, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.

General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.

He claimed at the time that his site gives equal time to all topics of the day when in reality his site has become Evolution Debate 101 Central. Except there is nor debate. Its his site so he can do whatever he wants. But to pretend that he does not focus on Darwin on frequent basis is kind of silly.

Because women are just as capable of viciously hating other women, and employing sexual slurs against them, as women-hating men are.

I'm now controlling Hot Air! Bwa hahaha!
Chalres Johnson and AP are the guys that helped take down Dan Rather after he tried to single handedly elect John Kerry. LGF was once the gold standard of mostly non-partisan truth dealing on the ‘net. It devolved into its current state because Charles Johnson forgot that Radical islam killes 3000 Americans one day.
Charles’ lackey Kilgore Trout decided nothing would liven up HotAir like dropping twenty or so N-bombs….
Ed as is his wont decided to go full blown five alarm Fargo nice and “reiterate the rules” so the end result is that a former friend of HA’s lackey came in shat on the rug and Ed’s puppies are getting their noses rubbed in it.
Thus Charles Johnson now has some measure of editorial oversight into HA thanks to KT’s passive aggresive soiling of our board.

Libs are JUST as capable of being misogynists as people on the right. Even prog/lefty blogs that I like, ten comments in on a post about Malkin or Coulter or Palin or any woman on teh right you'll find an inappropriate (sometimes very ugly) comment.
But I don't remember Laura Bush ever coming in for anything like this. Ever. Even people who didn't like her-- the worst I remember are nasty gibes that she killed her HS bf. And that's horrible, but that was it.
The worst they said about her after that IIRC was that she was dumb. And not everyone said that. She generally got a lot of sympathy and people liked her literacy work.
But it's also possible I wasn't exposed to the super crazy people. (That is likely.)

re: #242 Jimmah
Oh i love that Bill Maher column. I generally can't stand him, but that column is spot on.
It's been a week now, and I still don't know what those "tea bag" protests were about. I saw signs protesting abortion, illegal immigrants, the bank bailout and that gay guy who's going to win "American Idol." But it wasn't tax day that made them crazy; it was election day. Because that's when Republicans became what they fear most: a minority. The conservative base is absolutely apoplectic because, because ... well, nobody knows. They're mad as hell, and they're not going to take it anymore. Even though they're not quite sure what "it" is. But they know they're fed up with "it," and that "it" has got to stop.
Here are the big issues for normal people: the war, the economy, the environment, mending fences with our enemies and allies, and the rule of law.
And here's the list of Republican obsessions since President Obama took office: that his birth certificate is supposedly fake, he uses a teleprompter too much, he bowed to a Saudi guy, Europeans like him, he gives inappropriate gifts, his wife shamelessly flaunts her upper arms, and he shook hands with Hugo Chavez and slipped him the nuclear launch codes.
Do these sound like the concerns of a healthy, vibrant political party?
It's sad what's happened to the Republicans. They used to be the party of the big tent; now they're the party of the sideshow attraction, a socially awkward group of mostly white people who speak a language only they understand. Like Trekkies, but paranoid.
I know. It's not about what Obama's done. It's what he's planning. But you can't be sick and tired of something someone might do.
Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota recently said she fears that Obama will build "reeducation" camps to indoctrinate young people. But Obama hasn't made any moves toward taking anyone's guns, and with money as tight as it is, the last thing the president wants to do is run a camp where he has to shelter and feed a bunch of fat, angry white people.
Look, I get it, "real America." After an eight-year run of controlling the White House, Congress and the Supreme Court, this latest election has you feeling like a rejected husband. You've come home to find your things out on the front lawn -- or at least more things than you usually keep out on the front lawn. You're not ready to let go, but the country you love is moving on. And now you want to call it a whore and key its car.
That's what you are, the bitter divorced guy whose country has left him -- obsessing over it, haranguing it, blubbering one minute about how much you love it and vowing the next that if you cannot have it, nobody will.
But it's been almost 100 days, and your country is not coming back to you. She's found somebody new. And it's a black guy.
The healthy thing to do is to just get past it and learn to cherish the memories. You'll always have New Orleans and Abu Ghraib.
And if today's conservatives are insulted by this, because they feel they're better than the people who have the microphone in their party, then I say to them what I would say to moderate Muslims: Denounce your radicals. To paraphrase George W. Bush, either you're with them or you're embarrassed by them.
The thing that you people out of power have to remember is that the people in power are not secretly plotting against you. They don't need to. They already beat you in public.

You know, I was being racist tonight cause I was discussing Obama's refusal to set up the missile defense in Poland with another person at work.
And then I was being Un-American when I switched topics to health care and my opposition to many parts of the current proposals.
And someone called me a right wing fanatic because I was happy that Kazi in Denver was caught before he could plan any possible backpack bombings.
All in the day of a conservative.
Hey, we were all pretty happy about what happened in Aurora (Denver) today. The other stuff we bounced around. I'd be game with the Poland stuff but I wore myself out on that early today.

I also generally can't stand most things that fly out of Bill Maher's piehole, but he at least has this right (and it's been something that Charles and most of us have been saying for a while now)...unfortunately, the Republican Party is running to embrace their crazies, not reject them. The only way conservatives are going to earn power again is to tell the Paulians, the Birchers, and the racists to fuck off, and I don't see that happening anytime soon, sadly.

I miss Art Bell...long ago, when I worked third shift as a guard, I used to catch him on the radio every chance I got. He is definitely a showman and a great one at that...no matter how strange or out there his guests were, Art has a knack for keeping it a neutral as possible and asking the right questions to keep things interesting, even if you don't believe what his guests were talking about. I know he still has a guest host spot open on CtoC whenever he wants to get on the air, even though he says he retired for real this time, but I can never seem to catch him when he's on live nowadays

That's actually a pretty good description of most political commentators. Depending on whose ox is being gored.
I remember when Maher said that the 9/11 attackers weren't cowards, that it took balls the size of grapefruits and a clear vision of will to fly planes into buildings. He was, of course, correct, in my opinion. Those bastards were *absolutely committed* to their mission.
But it flew in the face of national rage. They just *had* to be cowards! The Prez said so! We wanted to believe it! To believe otherwise would *empower* this new threat with something we didn't want to give them- legitimacy.
We didn't want to give them that power over us, so we called them cowards, and Maher lost his show. But you know what? He was right. They weren't and aren't cowards. Evil, committed, murderous, yes. But not cowards.

Well, some of it is about one's decision how to identify.
The rest of it is reality: Obama looks black, and is treated as black, in the world.
Some identites are ones we choose, or we choose to make public. Like religion. Some are thrust upon us. I don't have a choice about being female, because that is what I am and what everyone looking at me sees. Similarly for some (not all) ethnic identities and races: They're imposed on us, rather than claimed. People look at you and assign you a category.
When Obama walks down a street, (before he was famous), he'd have been assigned the category 'black' and treated accordingly. Hence it's not at all surprising that he should claim that assignment.

Go ahead, give them legitimacy. No semantics.
How does correctly describing them as fanatical zealots rather than simply as cowards give them legitimacy?

Cripes, how many times do I have to post this disgusting post:
But it flew in the face of national rage. They just *had* to be cowards! The Prez said so! We wanted to believe it! To believe otherwise would *empower* this new threat with something we didn't want to give them- legitimacy.

re: #362 The Shadow Do
You're demonstrating your utter lack of reading comprehension. The point is the reluctance of people like you to acknowledge that these weren't cowardly paranoid schizophrenics who happened to get lucky.
They were committed, dedicated, fanatical. They believed they were soldiers in a religious war, and they were willing to die in that cause.
Pretending otherwise downgrades and dismisses their threat and their real commitment to jihad, idiot.
You are engaging in a very typical wingnut tactic of smearing 'teh left' as loving, defending, or justifying jihad, and at the same time deriding and dismissing the real enemy.

Dear Ice,
I did not make this comment:

FWIW, I do think that terrorist suicide-murderers are cowards, and I think Maher is wrong on this.
They do not engage in the act of suicide-murdering innocents with the full knowledge that it will be the end of their own lives, period, full stop. Nothing to follow.
They commit these acts convinced that they do not literally die, but that their eternal spirits get magically transported to a place of eternal delights.
Cowards.

That doesn't validate the notion the way you think it does - he was saying that many people erroneously thought that this would confer legitimacy on them.

A charitable interpretation, not from the poster however. If that is what was meant than he should simply say so.

I understand that, SB, and I do agree up to a point, but think about it this way: how useful is the belief that these people are cowards when it comes to predicting their behaviour? What sort of actions characterize cowardice? Throwing your life away while killing the enemy isn't really one of them. But that is how these people behave. Fanatical suicidal murderous zealot is a more accurate, and more useful way of characterizing them in my view. I

I think Jimmah nailed it above in both posts, SD.

But the radical jihadis do not believe they are throwing their lives away. They believe they are getting brand new ones, full of eternal pleasures.
No different than abortion clinic bombers/doctor murderers who believe they will receive an eternal reward for their heinous actions.

It's pretty bloody obvious actually.
They just *had* to be cowards! The Prez said so! We wanted to believe it! To believe otherwise would *empower* this new threat with something we didn't want to give them- legitimacy.
I don't know how much more obvious it could be that those words are meant as a parody of the popular thought process on this, not an endorsement.

As I said SB, I totally understand and agree that in that sense they could be described as cowards. But in terms of their actions, its a pretty useless way of describing them. Fanatical murderous zealot on the other hand gives a much better idea of what kind of behaviour to expect. And whatever description you prefer, I think you'd at least agree that that it would be an odd person indeed who felt that such a description conferred 'legitimacy' on them.

Fanatical murderous zealots, as Jimmah said. Both of them.
SB, I think maybe what you mean is that these people are moral cowards, in a way, because they believe they'll be rewarded in heaven for their horrible acts and that's what motivates them.
I'd agree with that.
Sadly, they aren't physical cowards-- they're happy to die or be executed.
Maybe that's how people are arguing past each other on this thread.

Charles, thanks for recommending the Kindle. I bought my husband one for his birthday and he loves it! Especially since we can get the Wall Street Journal and the Oklahoman downloaded everyday. As okies living in Louisiana, its nice to read hometown stuff.

Nice to see the list of Kindle stuff growing, but I'm still looking for many, many titles.
