We are getting the greatest mothers day gift of all. My wife returning safe after 2.5 weeks in Nigeria working with moms and babies looking at ways that she and her company can help them be healthier using local resources an sustainable practices.

Other then that, we got pansies, paintings, bead necklaces and an (almost) clean house for mom.

And one horny husband. Hey the guys need love too!

I still need to get my mother a card. Thanks for reminding me.

If I could pick one person in my life that really gave my life direction and meaning, it would be my mom.

I love you, Mom... and a hearty thank you to all Moms out there.

Gaah!

Do you know what a huge idiot I am?

I just slept through an exam that was going to be graded solely on attendance for me because I already had over a 90% going into it!

That exam was 20% of my grade.

Now I'm going to drop from an A to a f***ing C in one of the classes for my major because I forgot I needed to show up and thus didn't set my alarm for it.

And it was one of the people I was going to ask for a letter of recommendation because I'd been doing so good in their 400 level course.

Now?

"Yeah bright kid, strong work ethic, he'll just forget about the meeting with your top customer and sleep through it!"

Can't wait to tell my folks about this...

Mr. Head meet Mr. Desk, you two are going to be good friends till my third friend Mr. Brain oozes all out over Mr. Desk...

Sorry to threadjack/go OT just... just needed to say it...

Ah James. It sucks to screw yourself like that.

I used to be late for everything, all the time. It really fucked my life up in some serious ways. Then I decided to just start being massively early, instead. It worked.

I hope you can figure something out that works for you.

Already done, teacher isn't in office so go went and talked to the people who handle student services (since I get some special stuff like time and a half an using computer to take written exams) already sent email and left pathetic sobbing phone call reminding teacher the only other time I missed class was when I had come down with a stomach virus and was puking into a bucket.

I dreamed last night that I fell asleep at my desk at work, woke up (still dreaming) and walked to the front of the shop, and it had been completely cleaned out. Everything was gone. Turned out (in my dream) that four gentlemen of a certain age had just moved everything and cleaned my carpet for me. I slept better than usual last night, and will definitely not be falling asleep at my desk today.

I already got my mom a gift but she really cares more about the card than anything. I found a Mothers Day greeting card that will make my mom get all teary. (Hallmark of course!) But anyway, I wrote this in the Mothers Day card I got for my mom:

I lied...

Every time I said "I've lost my shoes" what I meant was "I have misplaced my shoes and Scooby Doo is on so you're going to have to find them."

Every time I said "I have to go to the bathroom" what I meant was "Pay attention to me." Until I turned 10. And then I meant "I really have to go to the bathroom."

Every time I said "I want to go to Disney World" what I meant was "Dad needs a raise, because I'm starting to get a bit more high maintenance."

Every time I said "All my friends get to do it" what I meant was "None of my friend's mothers are dumb enough to let them do it, but I'm willing to lay odds you won't take the time to call my friend's mothers to check it out."

Every time I said "There's a kid at school that's picking on me" what I meant was "Let's move. Tomorrow."

Every time I said "I don't know how I'm doing in school" what I meant was "My grades fell and I'm just hoping I die of an incurable disease before report cards come out."

Every time I said "I don't feel good" what I meant was "I'd rather lay in bed all day and watch TV, than go to school."

Every time I said "My imaginary friend Floppy did it" what I meant was "A psychologist would suggest keeping me away from explosives for the next several years."

Every time I said "I did my homework" what I meant was "I'll do my homework in homeroom in the morning."

Every time I said "I'm spending the night at my friend Jake's house tonight" what I meant was "At least three Commandments will be broken tonight, and I don't even know a kid named Jake."

Every time I said "I'm old enough to stay home by myself" what I meant was "You had better take inventory of Dad's liquor before you leave."

Every time I said "I haven't had sex yet" what I meant was "I haven't had sex yet." (By the way, thanks for rubbing salt into the wound by asking constantly. I appreciate that!!)

And every time I said "I love you" what I meant was "I love you."

There ya go Mom. The original was much worse so I took out the stuff about pawning that wedding ring you thought you had lost so I could take a road trip with my buddies to Tijuana and that time I got arrested in Las Vegas when you thought I was at a friend's house.

Just kidding mom!

You can breathe now.

This wasn't about the alarm really it was about a mental misfire.

I have two exams with this teacher, one I had to actually take, one I didn't. I though the one I had to take was Friday at 2:00 PM, the one I didn't but had to show up for at 9:00 AM on Saturday.

Turns out I mixed them up.

Ain't an alarm clock in the world that will fix that sadly...

Oh yes, this is the truest one of all. Of course, it was wasted on me as a kid because we didn't have cable or a vcr at the time... and I really didn't understand soaps either. But, I did have legos! Man, I loved playing with my legos.

Now I have computers, DVDs, video game consoles, more entertainment than I could ever need, but I'm old enough to know that I have to bring home the income and staying home "sick" cuts into that... it's just not fair, but that's life!

Hello lizards. I've been lurking and always learning through so many LGF posters.
Regarding Mothers Day: My folks were divorced and I began living with my dad in another city at age 8. Mother needed help with her dementia when she was 86. From that time she lived with me - the two of us. It was necessary for me to do everything regarding her care. She passed at age 97 and I feel very fortunate having had that opportunity of a lifetime.

I use it on all my "clocks". I never wear a watch - can't stand the things. My timepieces are: my computer, my iPhone, my Kindle and my laptop. One of them is on or near my person at all times.

It's really very hard to confused 8:00 with 20:00.

I remember on Mother's Day when Mom was in her 70's. At the last minute I could get away to visit. Visiting meant a 300+ mile drive. Last minute. It was saturday night. No gift. No card. Desperate. A little country store was sold out of anything worthy of giving her. Then I remembered she loved strawberries as I do. I bought her a whole flat of strawberries. During the long drive home late sunday night I felt kinda dumb recalling the work this gift started because she canned strawberry jam most of sunday and insisted I take all but one jar for her. That's all she wanted.

I would not place myself there at midnight or later though. Daytime driving, no problem.

Because hoping a team loses because you don't want the leader of their nation to show up is rude and inhospitable. They should just ask Obama to stay home or pay South Africa for the extra security he needs.

You would kinda sorta think that South Africa of all places would welcome a flying visit from the first mixed-race president of the US.

Are they almost out of gold and diamonds down there, or WTF?

On LGF you can be down-dinged for saying 'Good morning'. Cant take the heat stay out of the kitchen I think is the most appropriate response to this.

They may not want to stretch themselves that thin. Providing security for the World's Cup is already a huge challenge and Cape Town is a pretty violent place at times.

If you ask me, asking Obama to pay for his own security (beyond normal secret service) would seem even more inhospitable.

Likewise I can see how a country would feel like its horribly loosing face if they have to say that either:

A) They're in bad enough economic situation that they can't easily afford the extra security.

Or

B) They've become so lawless/chaotic that they couldn't effectively promise a visiting dignity that he'll be safe within their borders.

So rather than face either of those unpleasing options (or unpleasing option C fork over the money) they're hoping the problem will resolve itself in a way that insults no one and costs them no money, the US team losing.

With that I'm gonna bale out till the next thread as no one needs to stick around and watch me and Tony get into a pissing match.

Hugo Chavez's Response to Beef Shortage: Arrest Butchers

[Link: www.cnbc.com...]

"At least 40 butchers were detained last week on charges of speculation for allegedly driving up their prices. Some say they were held at a military base and were later strip searched when turned over to police.

Butchers and wholesalers say they have the same problem facing many other industries: government price controls have eliminated profit margins. The recent arrests have prompted some to stop selling beef altogether for fear of ending up behind bars—adding to the scarcity.

"We've been working all our lives here and we've never been through this before, where they take you away, strip you, take off everything down to your underwear and then put you in a cell," said butcher Omar Cedeno, who was held for two days before being released last week

Cedeno was taken away in a truck with soldiers to Fort Tiuna, where he was held along with seven other butchers. They were taken the next day to a courthouse cell, where they were strip-searched, he said.

At least 32 other butchers were also charged last week. If convicted, they could face two to six years in prison.

The government says butchers can charge 17 bolivars—about $4—for a kilogram of beef. Butchers say they have to pay 14 bolivars—about $3 —for the meat leaving them no margin to cover the other costs of their business.

Some had been charging 24 to 40 bolivars a kilo, depending on the cut, until last week's raids stopped them from selling any beef at all. "

Maybe it goes with the revolutionary theme. If Obama is the ancien regime, then people who use the term can happily imagine getting to guillotine him.

Please note, all wannabe revolutionaries: if you say you want a revolution, please model on the American, rather than, say, the French. Less bloodshed, less psychosis, far superior resulting society. 'Kay?

Tidy, yes. But when the Senators representing a little over 10% of our population can block anything they want, tidy begins to lose its attraction.

Just start combining/splitting states to get a more equitable/sensible set of divisions. Who cares about history, we can print new books and DelaMaryLand will have always been in existence!

Don't mind me. I'll just be over here in the corner having a fangirl meltdown:

Thomas Dolby Enlists Mark Knopfler, Regina Spektor, Imgoen Heap For New Album

Thomas Dolby is "a good halfway through" his first new album in nearly 20 years, and he plans to have the first music from it out in June -- for his online fan club, at least.

Dolby tells Billboard.com that the "A Map of the Floating City" album -- which features guest appearances by Mark Knopfler, Regina Spektor, Imgoen Heap, Natalie McMaster, Eddi Reader and Camera Club's Bruce Woolley -- is comprised of three suites. "Amerikana" focuses on a fondness for American roots music Dolby developed while living in the United States for 22 years. "Oceanea" was inspired by "returning to my spiritual home" in the eastern coastline of England, while "Urbanoia" is "kind of a dark place, a dark city-state, so there definitely are some slightly more twisted songs on there."

Knopfler and McMaster perform on "17 Hills," which will be part of the "Amerikana" section. Reader and Woolley are part of "Oceanea's" title track, while Spektor portrays an Eastern European waitress in a song called "Evil Twin Brother."

Starting with "Amerikana" on June 12, Dolby will release all three parts to members of his Flat Earth Society at thomasdolby.com. The other two sections will come out as digital EPs during the year, and Dolby hopes to have the full "A Map of the Floating City" album, with additional tracks not released online, out "before the end of the year."

That. Is. AWESOME. I've been wanting new music from him for ages.

Just put up an ad for the LGF Cookbook 2 in the left sidebar with Jaunte's cover illustration -- a must-have for any member of LGF who enjoys eating, and reading. Not necessarily in that order.

Great!

Now, y'all, just look at that cover.
There's more of Jaunte's artwork INSIDE the book, and a poem by Cato featuring some fave lizards.

PLUS great recipes, and Killgore's Very Own Gardening Section, quite comprehensive, actually, Killgore did an excellent job on that.

All for a mere $16.51, $5 of which goes to support LGF and Soldier's Angels.

Those of you who will be using (and appreciating) the new linkage blogs - hey, this is an opportunity to help support LGF and the wonderful tools Charles provides here!

From Reuters

SUSPICION OF GARDENING

In Washington, an American of Pakistani heritage who would only be identified as Farhan, said a manager of a suburban home-improvement store prevented him from buying two bags of fertilizer for his family's lawn on Tuesday.

Farhan, who was born in northern Virginia, said police arrived soon after, investigated and allowed him to buy the fertilizer.

"What kind of a country are we living in when a 22-year-old male can't buy fertilizer?" Farhan asked. "I'm American. I'm not Pakistani."

Farhan said the store had subsequently apologized and the case appeared to be one of an overzealous manager rather than store policy.

it doesn't have to be a negative term. sometimes the word is used to describe an administration. I liked Bush, but when I heard his administration described as a "regime," i found it to be a bit "sour grapes" sounding, but not alarmingly so. Freedom of speech and all that.

Nastiness Coming to My City Tomorrow

Just found out that the Westboro "Baptist" "Church" freaks are coming to Baltimore tomorrow. To the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, no less, Baltimore's cathedral and the seat of the Archdiocese. To bring their spew to the funeral of a young college student who was recently murdered by her boyfriend.

Counter-protesters are planning to hold up a shield-wall of sheets on poles to block the sight of these monsters' signs from the mourners entering the cathedral for the funeral.

From the WBC's "godhatesfags.com" website:

Catherdral of Mary Our Queen 5200 North Charles Street WBC to picket the funeral of Yeardley Love to remind this nation that priests rape boys because Catholics pay them to lie about God and that this nation is doomed for her hatred of the word of God. The Lord caused a young man to murder this young woman, both in the prime of their lives, to show this nation His wrath and repay these people for breaking His commandments.

They plan to be there from 9:15 to 10:00 tomorrow morning. The counter-protesters are asking for calm and dignified blockage of their signs, with no confrontation.

I'm not sure I could manage the second part, so I don't know if I'll go.

Talking about the Time Square bomber.

Really, I have no clue, Matthews brought up Limbaugh after that, sputtering in disbelief, said Pataki is parroting Limbaugh.

"Regime" I don't mind so much; I personally have been known (frequently) to call the previous administration a cabal. It's an editorial comment.

What bothers me is when they just flat-out lie.

For example, Limbaugh's been pushing the meme that the wannabe bomber is a registered Democrat. Turns out, the guy wasn't actually a registered voter at all, but Limbaugh's not letting it go.

Limbaugh and his puppets in congress are saying it was just luck that the guy was caught -- rather insulting to the alert vendors, quick-moving patrol officers and fine detective work by several agencies (city, state and federal). It's luck the guy was incompetent and the bomb didn't go off, but it wasn't "luck" that he was identified within 36 hours and in custody within 16 more.

Jameer is so much better than I thought. If teams start focusing on stopping him, he'll dish it to Lewis or Vince. Orlando spaces the floor so well and Howard is playing his best ball ever. Atlanta will win tomorrow and lose the series in 5 games. Orlando will then wait for the CLE/BOS winner, which will be a battered and tired team. The NBA playoffs are really interesting right now.
