Oh, for Pete’s Sake - Now Romney Says Abortion Isn’t Part of His Agenda

Romney takes yet another stand
Politics • Views: 29,302

Oh, good grief. This is getting ridiculous.

Now Mitt Romney is trying to say that no abortion legislation is part of his agenda.

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” the GOP presidential candidate told The Des Moines Register’s editorial board during a meeting today before his campaign rally at a Van Meter farm.

But by executive order, not by legislation, he would reinstate the so-called Mexico City policy that bans U.S. foreign aid dollars from being used to do abortions, he said.

I won’t bother tracking down the links that show he’s lying again; if you’ve paid attention at all to Romney’s many conflicting statements on abortion, you already know that he’s just saying anything he thinks he has to say to get elected, depending on the audience. The man is made of pure cynical ambition.

Not only that, but Paul Ryan is now saying that Mitt's position on abortion is consistent and hasn't changed.

These guys are just shameless liars. It's breathtaking.

And exactly the same as his own opinion:

They're lying about their position, the fact that the GOP platform is pushing personhood amendments that would outlaw abortion and would put an end to IVF procedures because of the way they're written, and his flip-flops have gone on unchallenged for too long.

I really hope Obama or Biden really hit him or Ryan hard for it. The guy's made a political career of being a blatant opportunist. He's so full of shit. I think he actually believes he's honest which is why he gets so pissy the few times he's called out for being a liar.

Position: Obama campaign ad states that Romney will oppose a woman's right to choose and attempt to reverse Roe v. Wade.

Summary: Since the Romney campaign stated "no legislation with regards to abortion" is planned we find that Obama's campaign ad is misleading.

Conclusion: mostly false.

15 Charles Johnson  Wed, Oct 10, 2012 11:40:45am

Politifact: "Romney said he wasn't 'familiar' with any abortion legislation on his agenda, and since the definition of 'familiar' is 'in close friendship; intimate,' and it's clearly impossible to be friends with a piece of legislation, we rate his statement 'Mostly True.'"

no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with

I imagine he'll become "familiar" with such legislation as soon as the 'less government' teabag party takes over Congress and that it will then become a part of his agenda.

18 HappyWarrior  Wed, Oct 10, 2012 12:14:45pm

Wait, he actually claimed he wasn't familiar with the legislation. The guy is running for president and not even paying attention to the legislature he will be working with? Or more likely he's lying through his ass again. Why do people left him get away with this? At least Goldwater, McGovern, and Mondale were honest. But perhaps that's why they got landslided and why Mitt has a fighting chance.

Mitt is playing a calculated game here...he knows that coming out too strongly pro abortion could be dangerious for Obama among a lot of voters and is counting on team Obama not challenging him too heavily on it.

And he is counting on women having too short a memory to recall just what the GOP thinks about abortion, contraception, planned parenthood and sex education.

Report: Anti-choice Republican forced mistress to have an abortion

A Tea Party Republican congressman who has backed anti-abortion legislation has been revealed to have pressured a mistress to get an abortion of her own.

The Huffington Post reported Wednesday that Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-TN), a former physician, had an affair with a patient that resulted in him pressuring the unidentified woman to get an abortion in September 2000.

Earlier this year, DesJarlais denounced fellow Republican Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) over Akin’s “legitimate rape” comments. However, DesJarlais has not backed away from his support of the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” co-sponsored by Akin and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), the GOP candidate for vice president.

I saw no less than a dozen anti-Obama bumper stickers today. Some of them were openly hostile(Hey Obama,Privatize This!,with a middle finger.I'd bet money this person will not say a word about privatizing schools though.). Some were more subtle(How's that Hope and Change working out for ya?).

Has there ever been so many anti- type bumper stickers and slogans aimed at a president before? Am I just noticing this? I just don't remember seeing very many anti-Bush type things on people's cars and stuff. Of course,I'm in a really red state place and maybe that's why.

This particular statement puts Romney into the "vast unknown" category. I'm sure that his supporters think they know what he stands for, but it's really anybody's guess as to what he would really do if he were elected. I like what I already know about Obama, so he's got my vote.

The thing we all must understand is that there are a lot of people out here who will vote for Mitt Romney simply to get rid of Obama. Romney knows this and he's more than willing to take advantage of it.

He could say he's going to paint the White House pink, hire three trained monkeys as personal assistants and outlaw NASCAR and the anti-Obama crowd would STILL vote for him.

It is pretty much what Romney and the GOP are running on. Anti-Obama.

Beyond that they're just tossing platitudes and a rehash of their 2004 and 2008 platforms in terms of reform. The only thing that seems different is the double-down in the platform on social issues.

Easy, he got elected. But yeah I understood some of the Bush hatred. Didn't think the real irrational stuff was right but some of it was legit but a lot of the Obama hatred is just racist or xenophobic in nature or completely misdirected like blaming Obama for the debt. That's why I thought the Tea Party was a sham of a movement. Where were these folks when Bush was increasing the deficit? My guess, they either didn't care or they were calling the people who criticized Bush unpatriotic "because you can't criticize the president at a time of war."*

I restarted a few times before I got comfortable with it. Built up a few officers, so I'm usually running a 6 man team of 1 Heavy, 1 Sniper, 1 Support Medic, 2 Assault and a wild card of whoever needs to get leveled up. Let my interceptors slide for a bit too long, so I had to dump some resources into upgrading those.

Yeah, that's probably part of my problem, I've been letting the computer create my squads and I tend to end up with a lot of Heavies. And I really wish it did something like pooling equipment so that you could just hand it out at the beginning of a mission, rather than trying to get the armor off the injured vet to put on the rookie for his first mission.

My problem was I went after too many shiny things, like the Phoenix cannon for my interceptors, too soon and burned up resources I could have put towards better armor for my soldiers. Here I am, running a Col. Heavy into battle still wearing Carapace armor.

News Leak: Team Romney's Secret Surprise Strategy for the Next Debate

Word has leaked out that the Team Romney plans to suddenly unleash a surprise strategy at the next presidential debate to catch Obama again completely off guard. The new strategy will be to actually tell the truth on randomly selected key points.

A Romney strategist was recorded on secret video commenting, "I don't know if this will work. We never tried truthfulness before. But I suppose if it fails we can just have Mitt do a quick flip flop again."

Team Romney expects the new strategy to be completely unexpected by Obama, and leave him trying to attack statements that are unexpectedly true.

I think there's a defect in the Romney Retroactive Engine.

re: #80 Targetpractice

Yeah, that's probably part of my problem, I've been letting the computer create my squads and I tend to end up with a lot of Heavies. And I really wish it did something like pooling equipment so that you could just hand it out at the beginning of a mission, rather than trying to get the armor off the injured vet to put on the rookie for his first mission.

My problem was I went after too many shiny things, like the Phoenix cannon for my interceptors, too soon and burned up resources I could have put towards better armor for my soldiers. Here I am, running a Col. Heavy into battle still wearing Carapace armor.

I'd been upgrading my weapons, let the armor slide for too long, so I'm
just getting around to the carapace and grappling hooks. Spent too much time interrogating and doing autopsies instead of researching gear.

I kind of like that though, it forces you to really think about what you're working on and focus your efforts appropriately.

The only thing I notice in MI is that when I see a Romney bumper sticker, the person driving has white hair. I've seen a few for both candidates, but not too many either way. Obama supporters are tough to characterize by looks. Romney's are all old and white. Always. YMMV

Interesting how Republicans are trying to pin the blame on the Benghazi attack on Obama when if anyone tried to pin the blame 9/11 on the Bush WH that was considered treasonous or unpatriotic.

I used to be against blaming the Bush WH for 9/11. After this? Not anymore.

I focused on armor, since I figure it gives me some breathing room on the battlefield. Interrogations, I've only managed the Sectoid and Thin Man. And after I got Carapace armor, I think made the mistake of trying to run up the weapons tech too quickly. Not that I'm disappointed in what I got, since laser weapons are sweet.

re: #41 S'latch

"no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda"

I don't even know what that means.

It means he is lying because of the GOP platform itself. The GOP initiated anti-abortion and anti-women legislation from day one after the 2010 elections (from house bill #3...number THREE...the third piece of legislation created).

93 nines09  Wed, Oct 10, 2012 1:02:09pm

You would like to think that people actually pay attention to what candidates say, and said. Then you have Romney supposedly "win" the debate on the strength of a "better performance". Ignore the fact that he lied his ass off. It looked good. So now you have a clearly more smug and arrogant Romney just lying in bold type and retracting in small print everything he thinks he can get away with. Isn't lying a sin? Gee, I wonder why I hold such people in utter contempt.

I'm starting on using Plasma now, same stats as the lasers so far, but more accurate.

From the Onion (or is it?)

For weeks many Beltway insiders had written off the Romney campaign as dead, saying the candidate had dug himself into too deep a hole with too little time to recover. However, with a month to go before ballots are cast, Romney has pulled even with President Obama, and the former Massachusetts governor credits his rejuvenated campaign to one, singular tactic: lying a lot.

“I’m lying a lot more, and my lies are far more egregious than they’ve ever been,” a smiling Romney told reporters while sitting in the back of his campaign bus, adding that when faced with a choice to either lie or tell the truth, he will more than likely lie. “It’s a strategy that works because when I lie, I’m essentially telling people what they want to hear, and people really like hearing things they want to hear. Even if they sort of know that nothing I’m saying is true.”

“It’s a freeing strategy, really, because I don’t have to worry about facts or being accurate or having any concrete positions of any kind,” Romney added.

Romney said he is telling at least 80 percent more lies now than he was two months ago. Buoyed by his strong debate performance, which by his own admission included 40 or 50 instances of lying in one 90-minute period, the candidate said he will continue to “just openly lie [his] ass off” until the Nov. 6 election.

Same here.
Around here, they tend to have the smallest house on the block, which I find ironic.

re: #48 dragonfire1981

Anti-Obama is a billion dollar industry. Anti-Bush was not. I don't think dislike for a particular President has ever been commercialized as much as with Obama.

I fear this is the way of the future. Citizen's United opened the door to political movies (which, few explicitly say, Citizen's United was originally Citizen's United Not Timid [C.U.N.T. - with the requisite graphic {Google it}], and was over the timing of a "documentary" about Hillary) and all the awesome gear that goes along with that.

Romney:
“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,...”

I dare anybody to find a statement by Romney, this campaign, that clearly states that his agenda, if elected, would include federal anti-abortion legislation.

I bet it won't be found.

That isn't how the right does it. They make equivocal statements where the implication is there and then when they have everybody licking the stick, they deny that's what they meant. They play plausible deniability with everything they say.

What I find ironic is that, and I fully believe this, had McCain picked someone other than Palin, he would have won. Had he picked Lieberman, I think he would have won in a landslide.

Eh, part of the problem with plasma is that until you research them, you can only use what you manage to capture on the battlefield. And so far that's meant that my Support troops were the only ones who could carry plasma rifles. Everybody else was lugging around standard weapons until I researched laser tech.

105 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Wed, Oct 10, 2012 1:10:43pm

Romney's campaign walked this back already...only two hours after it hit the news.

[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]
“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” the Republican presidential nominee told The Des Moines Register in an interview.

The Romney campaign walked back the remark within two hours of the Register posting its story. Spokeswoman Andrea Saul told National Review Online's Katrina Trinko that Romney "would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life."

At this point Romney is just saying anything publicly that he thinks might garner him a few more votes while his staff and Ryan follow along behind him to later quietly tell reporters that it was a "misstatement." This campaign is despicable.

If this is the way the GOP wants to campaign then I have an even better candidate for them...

Ideal GOP Pol.
