re: #254 goddamnedfrank

One weird assumption that polls make is that admittedly bad data can be stacked to produce nominally larger and more trustworthy samples. Look at the CNN/ORC poll, there's only two age categories, under 50 and over 50. Now the under 50's have a margin of error of +/- 8.5, which is the very highest their stated methodology allows before they'll simply not publish the number because it's too unreliable. Now their over 50 sample has a MOE of +/- 4.5, meaning that they oversampled the hell out of the over 50 crowd vs. everyone younger. However when it comes time to publish results they add all the ages together and claim an overall margin of error of +/- 4. In other words the sheer badness of their sampling of younger voters is forgotten and the overall sample is given an MOE @ a so called 95% certainty that's nominally better than either of the constituent results.

One thing I'm not getting from these crosstabs:

In the intro, it says the Party ID for the LVs is 32%D, 32%R, 36% I (which is already sketchy).

But in all the questions where they break it down between parties, the Republican MOE is 6.0%, the Independents MOE is at 6.5%, and the Dems MOE is at 7.0%.

So....how does that happen when there are supposedly the same amount of Dems and Repubs, and more indies?

Looks to me like CNN is just really bad at conducting polls.

Please see my reply to gdf.

There are so many assumptions (and presumptions) going on with these "polls" that I have pretty much dismissed them as being predictors.

They are important in rallying the troops in a way that parallels the cheerleaders at football games. Generally speaking, the masses tend to go for bigger boobs on their cheerleaders.

I'm just wondering how it is possible for the math to work out like that. How the poll can have 36% indies and 32% for each Dems and Repubs, yet wind up with MOE's like that for questions that break down by party.

It's been a while since I've taken my statistics classes, so I could definitely be missing something here. But if there are more independents than Republicans in the poll......shouldn't the MOE be lower for independents than Republicans? What am I missing?

Yes, this may not be a great poll. But generally, most of the polls in FL are leaning to Romney.

Better to take the trend seriously.

They're discounting Dems more in the likely voter screen. That's fair, the average Republican despite their lower numbers trends older and like zombies will stumble to the polls even if half their chest is missing.

Now I don't know the Florida registration breakdown enough to gauge if the initial registered voter sample is accurate or not.

But the 32/32/36 split was supposedly their numbers from the LVs, not the RVs. So either I'm completely misremembering what I learned about margin of error, or something in their data/math is way off.

There are some fundamental problems with the CNN/ORC poll delineated in the previous thread. They look to have grossly under sampled younger voters and minorities. This is exacerbated by the fact that they only publish two age groups, over 50 / under 50 and only barely managed to get enough under 50's and non-whites to publish. They were right at their max allowable MOE for both those groups.

I'm not necessarily analyzing it to make it look better for Obama. If I had to guess right now, I wouldn't think Obama will win Florida. (And definitely not by 7% like their RV polling shows). Not unless he trounces Romney even worse in this next debate (which is certainly possible)

I'm just questioning the math they're putting out there, because it just doesn't seem to make sense.

re: #10 JamesWI

The actual number of data points is so small and similar for any category that the so called MOE isn't much different, and when rounded to two significant digits I'm not surprised they come out as something other than what one might think otherwise.

Remember, this whole "margin of error" idea is itself suspect, and depends upon what one considers the "truth", or true value, if you want to connect your measurements (literally, statistics) with the real universe.

Besides the under-sampling problem, and the non-blind-ness of the data collection, these polls suffer from not having an absolute truth to measure. By which I mean there really are people around today whose choice in a couple of weeks may still change.

Yeah, this is slightly better that the Big Bird thing but it's still nonsense from a policy standpoint. I guess it's mostly marketing executives selling candidates with catch phrases and slogans. It might work to sway some low information undecided voters but doesn't really contribute to the conversation about the problems facing the country.

Well alright. It's been a good five years or so since my last actual experience with statistics (in a class at law school), and I have avoided math like the plague since then, so I'm sure the number of things I've forgotten is much larger than the number of things I remember.

The only poll that counts, on Nov 6, will have a sampling of not 600 or 900 people, but of around 110 million people.

There are counting errors in actual votes, but the errors are much much smaller than in these media "polls".

And, as I asserted earlier, there are people out there whose vote on Nov. 6 is still not conscious to them. Deep down they may have made a decision, but they couldn't expound upon it today.

Yep,if we don't know what a candidate plans to do as President by now, well, then they've done a totally sucky job of telling the country. There's really no excuse for that, not with all the forms of media available these days. I think the voters deserve most of the blame. We don't hold our leaders to a very high standard and cheer stupid slogans and vapid rhetoric. If someone did decide to display real leadership and focus on complex issues and hard decisions I don't think the public would like it very much. No. I didn't start this shit, the GOP did and it's time they own it since they think it's so amusing and they're so right about everything.

That was a truly beautiful rant. Thank you.

Treating the two party system as a tribal death match is a core Republican principle.

Cooperation is a core Obama principle.

Now who the fuck are you gonna vote for in November? It's not a tough choice.

He'll vote for Rmoney. That's been obvious in his behavior for some time. The only real question is if he'll admit to it or keep pretending.

re: #73 allegro

My parents went to a church where they preached that anyone who wasn't "saved" should just be cut out of the family. Since I wasn't in the special club,it was real easy for their minister to drive a wedge in there. When my mom went to him with concerns because she was in my house and a)couldn't find a Bible and b)saw all my books about paganism and stuff about history and liberal politics he told her that I was evil,my house was evil and that my autistic child was punishment for my sins AND that he was probably going to be a criminal because of who was raising him. Now,she chose to cut herself off from me,but this asshole"man of god",who had never even met me,drove the wedge in and scared her to death. My siblings and my dad followed her right into the abyss. This minister has books by Glenn Beck in the church library and they have GOP party leaders and politicians at their Bible studies sometimes. Many members of the congregation are active in the Tea Party too. It took TEN YEARS to undo the damage even a little, and it only happened because my dad was in the hospital, scared of dying and he begged my sister to call me and have me come to his room. They don't go to that church anymore, but the damage may never be fixed. My son can't forgive them,he doesn't understand it.

I didn't start that shit, right wing evangelical christians who are staunch Republicans did and I'll be damned if I'll smile and agree that I'm just as bad as they are. No.Fucking.Way. Own it assholes, clean up your own party first, then we'll chat about how awful liberals and democrats are.

I think the voters deserve most of the blame. We don't hold our leaders to a very high standard and cheer stupid slogans and vapid rhetoric. If someone did decide to display real leadership and focus on complex issues and hard decisions I don't think the public would like it very much. I would like to see our leaders try although I don't think it would be well received.

I'm trying to figure out how that matches with your obsession with sensationalistic reporting and facile and exploitative partisanship.

It's not like there isn't any good reporting going on - and actually I'd say that a lot of people do care fairly deeply about issues. As shallow as the debates are - where both candidates turn every question around so they can spout talking points - the fact that we do have candidates debating before the public is actually pretty impressive.

Maybe if you spent less time focused on the least common denominator, it might seem less ubiquitous to you.

Which has been the heart of Republican strategy for 4 years or more. They set the trap and you fell for it.

Their strategy was to oppose the President on EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME, even stuff they support before, so people like you will will say, "I've had it with all the partisan bickering," and the GOP will say, "I know, right? Ain't it awful? Vote for us!"

Just listened to this interview:

[Link: www.npr.org...]

Very interesting listening. This reporter spent some six months hanging out with Obama to write this article. One of the things he noted was that Obama underestimated how little of a price Republicans would pay for pure oppositional behavior - for example opposing to the the death policy proposals that were Republican proposals only a few years ago. It isn't so much that Congress on the whole hasn't paid a political price (look at the Congressional popularity ratings), but that individual politicians haven't paid a price but instead, actually, have gotten much political support for obsessively hating on Obama.

I'm trying to figure out if Obama was naive - or that the level of opposition he has faced really was not predictable.

Anyway - it's a great interview.

Obama has talked plenty about what he wants to do. He also can point to what he has been doing as indicator of what he will do in the next four years. It's Romney who has spent the entire campaign trying to avoid saying anything about what his positions are. It's Romney who has based his entire campaign on a string of comments taken out of context (You didn't build that, the middle class is buried, they'll put you in chains, He didn't call it a terrorist attack (even though he did), etc. etc. etc.)

Try looking in the mirror if you want to see the side that has been more focused on bullshit. Obama's having some fun.

We discovered the cause of those periodic outages, where Apache would just stop running - turns out it was caused by the Cpanel app installed on that server. It was rotating the Apache logs so they didn't get too large -- and then doing a restart of Apache to force it to use the new log. Problem was that the "graceful" restart that was supposed to preserve connections -- didn't preserve the connections. It just dropped everything.

We've got it tweaked now so that won't happen any more, and right now everything is really blazing along.

One of the cables released by Issa names a woman human rights activist who was leading a campaign against violence and was detained in Benghazi. She expressed fear for her safety to U.S. officials and criticized the Libyan government.

"This woman is trying to raise an anti-violence campaign on her own and came to the United States for help. She isn't publicly associated with the U.S. in any other way but she's now named in this cable. It's a danger to her life," the administration official said.

Another cable names a Benghazi port manager who is working with the United States on an infrastructure project.

"When you're in a situation where Ansar al-Sharia is a risk to Americans, an individual like this guy, who is an innocent civilian who's trying to reopen the port and is doing so in conjunction with Americans, could be at risk now because he's publicly affiliated with America," the official said, referring to the group thought to have led the Benghazi attack.

One cable names a local militia commander dishing dirt on the inner workings of the Libyan Interior Ministry. Another cable names a militia commander who claims to control a senior official of the Libyan armed forces. Other cables contain details of conversations between third-party governments, such as the British and the Danes, and their private interactions with the U.S., the U.N., and the Libyan governments over security issues.

"It betrays the trust of people we are trying to maintain contact with on a regular basis, including security officials inside militias and civil society people as well," another administration official told The Cable. "It's a serious betrayal of trust for us and it hurts our ability to maintain these contacts going forward. It has the potential to physically endanger these people. They didn't sign up for that. Neither did we."

Quoth the Wiki:

People named Taggart

Taggart Romney, an American businessman, son of Mitt Romney
Taggart (surname), definition of the surname and list of people with the surname

Fictional people

Dagny Taggart, a character in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
James Taggart (Atlas Shrugged), a character in Atlas Shrugged

James "Paladin" Taggart, fictional character in the Wing Commander computer games
Ian Taggart, an antagonist in Prototype (video game)
Jim Taggart, a character in the TV series Taggart
Jim Taggart (Eureka), character in American science fiction drama Eureka
Samantha Taggart, character in the American drama ER
Sergeant Taggart, character in Beverly Hills Cop and Beverly Hills Cop 2
Taggart, character in the American movie Blazing Saddles
Flynn Taggart, main protagonist of the Doom series of novels.

Could just be me, but I somehow don't think that Tagg Romney was named after Slim Pickens' character in Blazing Saddles, just as I'm sure that Rand Paul's particular shortening of his given name is no accident.

Does that matter to Ryan, the Pauls, or any other deeply religious "conservatives" who are on the historical record, at one time or another, as touting and pushing Randian philosophy that is perfectly crystallized in Atlas Shrugged?

Just like with the nutjobs of the Religious Right, quite a few Randians have been playing the long con (see the Pauls)...and Romney's whole career, in business and in government, is a prime example of that "fuck you, I've got mine" mentality.

The right wing is on a freaking tear up here in Maine.

I went over to my mom's apartment tonight and we were watching the news.

During one commercial break, of the six commercials that aired:

-- Two were "No on 1" ads -- a "No" vote is a "vote to not redefine the traditional definition of marriage."
-- One was an anti-Obama ad; the one with the earnest-looking middle-class lady asking "Where are the jobs, Mr. President?"
-- Two were ads, one from the Chamber of Commerce and one (I believe) from American Crossroads, attacking independent candidate Angus King (Republican Charlie Summers is a climate change denialist).

The other commercial was a car commercial -- thank heaven for small favors.

Preceding the commercial break were two very interesting news stories, but a little history is called for. Channel 13 is the CBS affiliate; it used to be owned by Gannett (not the national Gannett, but the local Gannett) but is now owned by Sinclair Broadcasting.

The first "news piece" was a man-in-the-street bit asking for responses to Obama's latest ad. Not surprisingly, everybody interviewed was negative toward the ad.

The second was about a lady who got into a bit of trouble tearing down posters of Obama that featured him with a Hitler mustache.

The piece was no longer than sixty, maybe 90 seconds -- but they showed the "Obama with Hitler mustache" three different times.

What media bias?

My grandmother who still has traces of her thinks he retained a lot of it since a lot of his coworkers in the construction industry were from the same region. Like wise apparently my Dad's Dad from the actual city of Pittsburgh apparently sounded very non-regional but he moved around a lot.

From Tagg's own mouth:

And here I thought it was a family name. That is an unfortunate name though(the guy he's named after not Tagg himself). When I was looking through the basketball rosters for the youth basketball team I'm helping coach this winter, there were a couple kids with the same first and last name. I would hate to have that happen. Never going to happen with anyone with my last name. I'd be shocked if my surname ever got on as a surname that is also a given name.

Took this test. Says I'm from the West. Only been West of the Mississippi twice and that's been twice within the past 9 months.

Neat.

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

It says I'm from the "inland North" (i.e. Great Lakes region) and most likely say "pop" for carbonated drinks. It's entirely wrong; I'm from the mid-Atlantic region and say "soda". But my mom was from northern Ohio and my dad from Pittsburgh and later midstate Ohio.

From Tagg's own mouth:

If that's the case, so be it, but I don't tend to believe in coincidence.

Neat.

Weird given we're from the same part of Va.

From Tagg's own mouth:

Well, that settles the origin of his name, but the first part of his reply might well be used against him.

Neat.

The idea that southern Ohioans "don't have an accent" is fairly absurd, based on the southern Ohioans I've known.

Edit: Gus, that's apparently Josh, not Tagg.

When I first saw a pic of Josh at the debate, I thought he looked a lot like this fine. upstanding gentleman:

Give Josh long blond hair and he's almost a dead ringer.

Mitt Romney has an Alabama accent?

I think it's exclusive to the firmware they flash onto him when he's campaigning in the South.

re: #210 Hercules Grytpype-Thynne

Actually that's true of me too. I used to challenge classmates in college to guess where I was from based on my speech. I actually lived in the same place from ages 2 to 20, but my parents were from another part of the country and the accents blended.

I grew up in California but occasionally people can tell where I'm from. Aboot, I mean 'about', comes through some times.

This is a neat website run by the linguistics program at my alma mater.
[Link: accent.gmu.edu...] One of my English professors directed me here after reading a Shakespeare play and noticing that Shakespeare liked poking fun at the Welsh accent. In the past, I had despite having both a Welsh cousin-in law and English one unable to tell the difference between the two accents. You definitely do pick up an accent if you live somewhere for a while. The guy who taught my Irish film and lit class in Ireland was an American but had a slight Irish accent due to living and teaching there for twenty years. And my cousins who married the Brits have that a little and use British slang. I don't see their kids enough so I don't know whether their kids sound more British or American or a hybrid of both.

I have a co-worker with a true mid-Atlantic accent. He was born and raised in the U.K. but has worked in the Eastern U.S. for many years and he now sounds like a foreigner no matter where he is.
