Somebody Told A Guy Obama’s Columbia GPA Was Only 2.6, Daily Caller Takes 4 Pages To Explain
In 2004, after Obama’s successful speech at that year’s Democratic convention, a Columbia University official told him Barack Obama’s GPA, he explained to TheDC.
“This person told me that he [Obama] was a pre-law, poli-sci major, had a lot of incompletes, and as best could be determined after sorting through the incompletes, had a GPA of 2.6,” said the businessman, a former Marine Corps combat veteran.
See? And he’s a Marine, so to question this report is to Hate the Troops! It also makes perfect sense that a Columbia official would have looked up Obama’s records, calculated his GPA (adjusting it downward by “sorting through the incompletes”), and then tell an acquaintance about it, because the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 totally has an exception for really good gossip. Also, we hate to be all math-y, but if you reach a cumulative GPA of 2.6 after “a lot of incompletes,” doesn’t that mean that you kind of had a pretty high number to start with? But, hey, either way plays into delightful stereotypes: He’s either pretty dumb, or he’s so lazy he didn’t bother to finish his classes!

If President Obama is re-elected, health care coverage will expand dramatically, taxes on the wealthy will go up and Wall Street will face tougher regulation. If Mitt Romney wins instead, health coverage will shrink substantially, taxes on the wealthy will fall to levels not seen in 80 years and financial regulation will be rolled back.
Given the starkness of this difference, you might have expected to see people from both sides of the political divide urging voters to cast their ballots based on the issues. Lately, however, I’ve seen a growing number of Romney supporters making a quite different argument. Vote for Mr. Romney, they say, because if he loses, Republicans will destroy the economy.

DHS Napolitano in Staten Island; complaints that it took 4 days to make it to Staten Island - particularly against FEMA and Red Cross.
There's merit to that - Staten Island was among the hardest hit areas, and the resources haven't been brought to bear nearly as well as they should have. They need to "fill the zone" with help.
And the weather's turning colder heading into the weekend and next week.
NYC harbor is once again reopened. That's a huge help - marine traffic was shut after the storm because the USCG found unsafe conditions - channel bouys had to be relocated/remarked. Once the situation was deemed safe, they could reopen to traffic, including tankers with oil/gas.
Right now, there's potential for a Nor'easter on Wednesday. More to follow.

We saw yesterday that the RNC is already hauling out the FRAUD!! excuse at a national level.
And in the specific races it's already happening too:
McMahon’s camp seeks court order over New Haven ballot numbers
The campaign of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon is seeking an emergency court order requiring the city’s registrar of voters to certify how many ballots she has ordered for the election, but the official said she ordered enough for 110 percent of the voter list and state officials have that information.
Todd Abrajano, spokesman for McMahon, said they tried to get that information from New Haven, but were not able to get an answer “to our satisfaction.” He said New Haven was the only municipality that had not filed a certified document indicating how many ballots it has ordered for Tuesday’s election with the secretary of the state’s office.
New Haven Republican Registrar of Voters Rae Tramontano said the city did miss the deadline, but put the information in an email to the secretary of the state’s office and followed up by mailing a hard copy listing the number of ballots ordered for each of the 40 polling stations.
[...]
“Abiding by state law and ensuring the integrity of elections should be the top priority of all municipal election officials,” McMahon campaign manager Corry Bliss said in a statement. “The voters of Connecticut deserve to know their elections will be fair and transparent so they can trust the outcome. Our campaign has attempted to work directly with election officials in the City of New Haven to certify polling places will have enough ballots on November 6 as required by state statute.”
[...]
But, it looks like it'll backfire:
[Republican] Tramantano said she explained the situation to the McMahon campaign. “We’re good. This is petty stuff. I’m so mad at these people,” Tramontano said. “I’m getting so mad at them, I might not vote for her.”
Hehehe.
BTW, Nate Silver gives McMahon something like a 12% likelihood of winning.

Well, looks like the method I'm using to poll the server to find the number of new comments, and the pageviews and Twitter clicks, is going to have to be re-designed. When we get hit with a surge of traffic from somewhere like Reddit or Facebook (today we had both), the repeating Javascript code that runs every five seconds, in every logged in user's browser, is causing logjams in the database.
Under normal traffic it works fine, but when there are suddenly thousands more people trying to get in the connections start piling up. As soon as I disabled that repeating script, things started running just fine.
So, I have a plan to fix it.

Romney is more like Obama than he would ever care to admit. He has been appointed as a "leader" of something that is outside the experience and knowledge zone of most of middle America. I'd like to think the country is past this, but it isn't.
Which is why I think that video is so damning to him. The negative reactions we are seeing are what would happen to Obama if he lost his cool. If the same thing happened to Obama in relation to church or race, we'd never hear the end of the "Angry Black Man" meme.

As was mine. Not sure if we're going to be back up and running Monday. But even if the building is open, all the NJ commuters are still screwed as far as rail is concerned. NJ Transit has huge probs.
[Link: www.flickr.com...]
That bridge is the Morgan drawbridge that has been featured on numerous photos from the region. The container on the bridge had to come from somewhere - but my friend who takes that line (NJ Coast) says there's no roads for at least 50 yards - so that container had to float in from somewhere else. Clearing out the boats and container from the bridge are easy. Fixing the drawbridge itself might be much more difficult. It appears to have been knocked off kilter.
My train line apparently still has some flooding and washouts, but it also has problems in Hoboken. The rail yard and terminal have significant damage and washouts. They've got to reset rails w/ballast and fix all the signal systems.

he argued that “political correctness” had caused him to face greater backlash than Bill Clinton, “who was accused of doing something wrong, as opposed to saying something wrong.”
“It surprised me that the saying it wrong almost seems like it’s worse than the doing it wrong,” he said. Clinton, of course, was impeached. And Akin’s comments on abortion and rape are indeed reflected in his actions, such as his attempt to redefine rape and participation in militant anti-abortion rights activism.
He went on to compare criticism of his remarks to decapitation by Islamic extremists: “We see that all the time with [what] the Islamists pull out on us: we’re offended so we’re going to cut your head off.”

The GOP is slowly fading from being a major political party out here in Golden state:
Calif. voter registration hits record of 18.2 million; Republican Party dips below 30 percent
California has reached an all-time high of 18.2 million registered voters while the number of registered Republicans has fallen below 30 percent, signaling a worrisome decline for the state’s minority party.
In its final update before Tuesday’s general election, the secretary of state’s office announced Friday that the number of registered voters has increased by 950,000 since the 2008 presidential contest. Officials attribute that surge in part to the state’s new online registration system, which helped many young, Democratic-leaning Californians sign up to vote this fall.
That system was seen as a threat to the California Republican Party, which has struggled to maintain voters, let alone add them. The secretary of state announced that Republicans now make up 29.3 percent of the state’s electorate, compared with 31.4 percent in 2008.
The GOP now has about 1.5 million more voters in the state than those registered as having no party preference, previously called decline-to-state voters. Independent voters account for 21 percent of the electorate.

I love how people like Akin imagine that even though they justify policy with personal opinions, that what they say is "personal" somehow should shield them from criticism and insult of the "...and I'll make policy for that personal opinion" component.
Hence, Bill Clinton's blowjob, in spite of not being part of some kind of No Mistress Left Behind initiative, is draw as a comparison to "I promise to use my elected powers to implement this insane, woman-hating opinion I've just uttered."

Down to a fierce finish, President Barack Obama accused Mitt Romney of scaring voters with lies on Friday, while the Republican challenger warned grimly of political paralysis and another recession if Obama reclaims the White House. Heading into the final weekend, the race's last big report on the economy showed hiring picking up but millions still out of work.

A Clackamas County [Oregon] elections worker is under criminal investigation for tampering with ballots, WW has learned. [That's Willamette Week, not me]The underlying allegation is that the woman, whose name has not been released, filled in blanks on ballots turned into the county for the Nov. 6 general election.
Sources familiar with the incident say their understanding is that the woman filled in a straight Republican ticket on the ballots where preferences had been left blank by voters.

Multiple sources are reporting - but the fact is that the marathon should have been postponed from the outset. Postponing early would have gotten attention where it was needed and avoided a logistical nightmare of now dealing with getting those folks first coming in for the race having to turn around.
BTW - Lower East Side is seeing power returned along with the East Village. That's a huge chunk of Manhattan outages. With that power returned, the subways will follow within a couple of hours - including East River Tunnel/Bridge access to some lines.
That's huge.

Photo ID can be used to register at the polls, in which case we do have to see it but if already registered, the voter need only say his/her name and address out loud.

A Warning For “True the Vote:” Do Not Intimidate Voters
PRESS RELEASE
WASHINGTON, Nov. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The following is being released by Velasquez & Associates on behalf of the undersigned organizations:
An alliance of 21 civil rights, human rights and labor organizations, including the NAACP, the Hispanic Federation and the AFL-CIO, today urged True the Vote and its affiliates to halt immediately its national campaign to assert challenges to the eligibility of voters.
True the Vote, a Texas-based organization, has announced plans to place a million poll watchers around the country, reportedly targeting minority groups and other demographic groups traditionally under-represented in our democracy. The 21 organizations wrote True the Vote President Catherine Engelbrecht to urge her to dismantle the program, which they called “a sad revival of racially targeted voter suppression that America left behind decades ago.”

Discovery of beer gene could improve 'foam character'
Scientists have found the first gene for beer foam, a discovery which they say will help researchers perfect the frothy "head" atop a freshly poured pint.
Researchers from Spain and Australia say they have identified the yeast gene which helps produce the proteins needed to create bubbly foam, in a study published in the journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
"This novel protein is responsible for beer foam stabilization," the researchers wrote. "This report represents the first time that a brewing yeast foaming gene has been cloned and its action fully characterized... Foam quality is an important organoleptic property of beer that directly correlates to consumer appeal."
[...]
Really:
Cloning and Characterization of the Beer Foaming Gene CFG1from Saccharomyces pastorianus
Foam production is an essential characteristic of beer, generated mainly from the proteins present in the malt and, to a minor extent, from the mannoproteins in brewer's yeast cell walls. Here, we describe the isolation and characterization of the novel fermentation gene CFG1 (Carlsbergensis foaming gene) from Saccharomyces pastorianus. CFG1 encodes the cell wall protein Cfg1p, a 105 kDa protein highly homologous to Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell wall mannoproteins, particularly those involved in foam formation, such as Awa1p and Fpg1p. Further characterization of Cfg1p revealed that this novel protein is responsible for beer foam stabilization. This report represents the first time that a brewing yeast foaming gene has been cloned and its action fully characterized.

Read something in the comments on Silver's blog that Gingrich apparently sent out on accident an email that seemed to imply that Newt thinks the election is lost despite the fact Newt said publically on the 25th that he thought Mitt would win in a landslide. Apparently, the whole election rests on 2 counties in OH
Dear Faithful Friend of Liberty,
We've been updating you over the past month, letting you know that the election has hinged on only 5 swing states -
Well, that’s all changed now - for the good!
As of today - thanks to you our partners who helped make this happen, along with our highly effective FFC team - the election is now down to only one state!
The race for president can now be boiled down to two key counties in one key state - Ohio - with Cuyahoga and Hamilton counties arrayed as the final battlegrounds.
Change the voting dynamics in those two counties - and there will be a conservative government in this country once again.
I and pretty much my entire FFC team have been on the ground here in Ohio for the last few weeks wearing out shoe leather, knocking on doors, and watching the polls move our way.
Please, we need your help for this last stretch. We've used your generous donations - every penny of them - to get this far. We need just a little more gas in the tank to push us over the finish line.
If everyone getting this email today will please invest $10 in the outcome of this historic election, that will help us do our very best to close the gap in these final days of the home stretch. Could you please do that right now, while you're thinking about it.
For God and Country,

Sorta digression. As an adult who has quit games over the rampant sexual verbal abuse this is welcome. [Link: www.dailydot.com...] Paraphrasing what Microsoft says here:
Freedom has consequences. You are free to rape your opponents, to call them whores and b***s. You can ask them if their vaginas hurt, using whatever vulgarity you wish.
And if you do, we are free to permaban you from Halo 4. That's the consequence of your freedom.
Your choice: Play or troll. You can't do both.

We discussed poll watchers in my poll worker training yesterday. They are not able to ask the voter _anything_. They can go through the chief inspector only. After the voter has left the building then exit pollers and the like can talk to them, but not in the polling place.
Photo ID can be used to register at the polls, in which case we do have to see it but if already registered, the voter need only say his/her name and address out loud.
I'm guessing the laws vary by state. In Mass. the law states that anybody can issue a challenge at any time. What state did you do your training in?

We, as a gamers group, pay for the server, and we administrate it according to the rules we want. As a result, it's one of the most popular servers in the world. I invite any L4D2 players here to get in there. It's this one:

Wisconsin. They can challenge any voter but they have to go through the Chief Inspector, they can not delay the election and they can not see the documents used to verify residency. And if we feel they're disruptive we can bounce them on their assess. The police department is, literally, next door in the same building :)

There's also a lot of latinos who came here first as migrant workers of one kind or another, in the food industry, the building trades, and of course the entire agricultural industry. One of the biggest Latino heroes is Cesar Chavez, a labor organizer. So is Corky Gonzales, a community organizer. And so is Jaime Escalante, a (shock) public school teacher-- and he was pretty damn right wing, but he was passionate about the funding and importance of public education.
So when the GOP trash community organizers, public school teachers, and labor leaders, they're really trashing a very large portion of Latino heritage, and really the majority of grassroots latino political history.

Kudos to the Levittown mom who put the smiles on my grandchildren's faces, as well as those of all the other kids, in her neighborhood, when she came up with the idea of Trick or Trunking! She started a text amongst friends, which spread to friends of friends. They all met in a parking lot of a, now defunct, K-Mart. Adults came in costume; cars were decorated, complete with eerie sound effects. The kids got to trick or treat, with their friends, safely away from the downed lines, and limbs, left in Sandy's wake. Thank you, to my daughter's neighbor, my granddaughter's friend's mom. I nominate you Neighbor of the Year!! If nothing else you, ARE the mom who saved Hallowe'en, for these kids! I thank you for that.

From there:
When a daemon program is started, it fires up a second child process, detaches it, and then the parent process dies. This is called forking. Because the parent process dies, it will give the console back and it will look like nothing has happened. But wait: the child process is still running. Even if you close your terminal, the child continues to run in memory, until it either stops, crashes or is killed.
Oh, my.

The right seems so convinced that the odds are in their favor because they think Dem turnout will be down enough to be counteracted by a strong Republican one. I won't deny that Republican turnout will be up from 2008 and Democratic turnout will be down some from that year but it's not going to be as totally depressed as they want it to be. Hell, as Silver has pointed out, there's a possibility that Obama's support could be under-represented in some of these polls.

New York Times' Bully Knocks Stack Of Polls From Nate Silver's Hands
NEW YORK—As part of his continued effort to torment the 34-year-old statistician and blogger, feared New York Times bully Derek Kriesel reportedly slapped a stack of opinion polls from Nate Silver’s hands Friday, scattering the surveys across the floor of the organization’s newsroom. “Pick them up, you little fuckin’ dweeb,” said Kriesel, who eyewitnesses confirmed kicked the papers down the hallway before Silver could gather them up. “Hey, Silverdork, I got a poll for you. It says there’s a 90 percent chance that I’m going to beat the shit out of you, what do you think of that?...”

For those who need to ask, I didn't vote for a single Republican candidate, and will not do so until they disassociate themselves from the clutches of the theocrats and neo-Confederates who are currently in control of the party.
Here's an "amen" from another North Texan who went into the booth, and rotated the knob to "Straight Party" letter "D" for the exact same reasons.

So, the outages and gas troubles around here have me wondering about the usability of vehicles that are being touted as alternatives to pure internal combustion engines.
Hybrids, particularly ones like the the Prius, will let you get by without gas for a bit longer. A Prius could give you a range of 400 miles or more. Seems to be the best of the options. Pure electrics? You're toast after the batteries run down - about 70-100 miles. And with the power out for days? That's a brick.
Plug in hybrids? You might get away with a bit more range, but if there's no electricity, you're going to be in trouble sooner. The range on those will depend on any number of factors, so they might have an advantage over pure hybrids - say like when you've got power at your home or place of business, but gas is hard to find.

What did they have in Bush V Gore?
The Iowa Electronic Markets have been allowing selective trading for modest amounts of money on their exchange since 1988, with some success. Nevertheless, their odds were far off the mark in the 2000 election, predicting that Mr. Bush would win a larger share of the popular vote than Mr. Gore (meanwhile, the real-money “spread betting markets,” available to significant trading volume in the UK, had the electoral winner priced up as a dead-heat).

Hybrids have their place, mostly in city driving - you see a lot of people dumping their hybrid cars here because they don't "perform up to the hype" because they're not being used in their proper role. But in a situation where you're needing to get by with a lot of short-term city driving until a gas shortage eases up, they'd be perfect.

We got broken into two years ago. Some asshole pulled up a neighbors trashcan to stand on and jimmied a window open. Instead of a kitteh, I give you this:
State Rep. David Burnell Smith was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in north Scottsdale on Oct. 21 after his car was seen swerving, police said.
Smith had blood alcohol level of .137 percent, police said. The legal limit .08 percent.
Smith, a Republican who represents Northeast Phoenix, Carefree, Cave Creek and northwest Scottsdale, appeared to be invoking legislative immunity when he was pulled over.
“Do you know who I am,” Smith asked the arresting officer, according to police reports.
He he was pulled over in the area of Pima and Lone Mountain roads and stumbled out of the car, according to the police reports.
[...]
After calling another officer to assist him, the arresting officer attempted to conduct sobriety tests on Smith, who refused. After officers placed him in handcuffs, Smith agreed to be breathalyzed but refused standard field sobriety tests.
Smith initially inhaled into the the machine several times, causing error readings before finally agreeing to exhale, officers said.
[...]
Smith is a personal injury attorney at Smith law Firm in Scottsdale. Specializations listed on his company website include DUI and DWI arrest defense.
[...]
He lost his primary bid, so he's out of office soon anyway.
Later, lizards.

This is the GOP strategy. Romney also made the same argument. Republicans are essentially saying we'll only cooperate with a Republican. Basically they holding America hostage.

I had some feral cat shelters made from rubber maid containers. They worked well. The cats would pile in together and keep each other warm. It probably wouldn't work when the weather was really cold.

LOL. I did NOT see this coming:
Actor and outspoken liberal John Cusack is developing a movie about conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, Cusack's production company said Friday.
The working title is "Rush," Cusack's New Crime Productions confirmed, offering no other details.
Hollywood director Betty Thomas, who's set to work on the film, said the production company is putting finishing touches on a script that will star the actor. Production is set for next year, Thomas said.
How's he gonna pull that off? CGI w/ motion capture. Massive, water cooled fat suit. Or will Cusack go the method route gaining 200 lbs on the double battered, everything fried in lard diet?

Two things.
First, the risk isn't one way. Reid has essentially indicated he's willing to play turnabout if Romney wins.
Second, I don't think things will be as gridlocked if Obama wins. This open statement that the blockages will continue is pretty well locking in the various Senators' intent to change the filibuster rules. On top of that it looks to me as though while the Republicans will remain in charge of the house their margin will be smaller.
The first means there's a lot less cover for politicians facing election in two years. The latter means that small blocs can give the Democrats tactical superiority on some votes. My guess is that the magic number for the latter to happen with regularity is around 10, maybe 15. If all it takes is ten to fifteen Republicans to say "this is wrong" then the power of the Teahardists is weakened.
Won't be perfect, but it'll be better -- maybe.

I am a BMW girl...there is nothing like the roadability of a BMW. That said, I am totally in love with the Acura ZDX (I'd get an X6 if they weren't insanely priced). Now that I am back to my original salary (granted from 18 months ago), I see a new car in my future (in the next two-ish years...my current bimmer should hit 100k miles by then).

Basically? No, they ARE holding America hostage and I hope if Obama wins on Tuesday he uses his bully pulpit to enlighten the masses to the bullshit they have been (and are likely to continue) inflicting pon this country.

Huh? You don't think Rush is fat? I have seen recent clips of him and the man is fat. I'd say 280 plus.

Seriously, I am talking the last three days of what Rush said about Chris Christie and Obama. They show film when he's spewing whatever shit that's draining from his mouth.
And, unfortunately for all of the US, he is not getting old enough fast enough.

Could probably go a little larger and stock it with some straw or something to help with the insulation value. The shed cats at my brother's place sleep on the hay bales in the upper level of the wood shed.
Is there any issue with other beasties interfering with the cats? Skunks, raccoons, etc?
