Photos like that do give some hope, hope that sanity might have a chance to prevail, for at least the men running for president did not hate each other.
I know that sentence is disjointed, but its how I feel.

Weird as this may seem, when I first saw this photo what struck me was.... the tan color scheme of the current furniture selection for the oval office. I'd prefer a move back to blue.

Tan goes better with the wallpaper though as well as with the wood in the room.

The wallpaper and the paint is replaced every now and again.
I just find the whole color scheme too bland, with the white trim, and old books that I doubt anyone opens, and the bronze cowboy statue (did Reagan bring that in?) Other than the Stature of Liberty painting, the only splash of color is the seasonal decorations. Even the shin-killer (aka coffee table) is bland, and the bowl holding the apples blend into nothingness. The pillows on the couch are muted.
And so on.

I liked it better when it was blue also. It does look a little too much like commercial office space now for my taste. A personal office should have more warmth.

Here is a totally different kind of picture...
A painting depicting President Obama as Jesus Christ with a crown of thorns on his head, crucified against the presidential seal is currently on display at a community college art gallery in Boston. The painting, titled “Truth,” is featured in a larger exhibit at the Bunker Hill Community College Art Gallery titled “Artists on the Stump – the Road to the White House 2012.”
The artist, Michael D’Antuono, mocked his critics, arguing that his “First Amendment rights should override someone’s hurt feelings.”
“We should celebrate the fact that we live in a country where we are given the freedom to express ourselves,” he said.
D’Antuono also criticized conservative media for “trying to promote the idea that liberals believe the president to literally be our savior.”
“The crucifixion of the president was meant metaphorically…My intent was not to compare him to Jesus,” he added.

Add one more to the list of people willing to purposefully exploit religious outrage to try to get their 15 minutes of fame. This is why we can't have nice things, someone always has to push things too far, just because they can.
P.S. Thanks a lot for reviving the "Liberals think Obama is the Messiah" meme you idiot. :(

This article discusses the decorating, and has a shot of the office from a different angle:
My Opinion of 2011 Fashion Decorator Colors
I remember a few months ago we got a look at the redesign of the Obama Oval Office in the White House. Drab wheat browns and pale sepias had replaced the bright and sunny colors of the old Bush decor. It was quite a shock. Was it more contemporary and sophisticated? Was it just depressing?
The color scheme was definitely earthy and Earth Tones was one of the six new fashion colors for Spring 2011. You are probably wondering what the other colors were... so here they are - Honeysuckle PInk, Blue (Sky, Navy and Aqua), Persimmon Orange, Pale Yellow and White.

Every color photo I've ever seen of the White House interior has featured horrendously gaudy furniture. It always looks like it came from a TBN set.
I don't have much of an eye for interior design, but I know gaudy when I see it. I think the White House needs some Swiss and/or German interior designers on staff.

Let's face it - that whole building is old, outdated, and needs to be replaced. Turn it into a museum.
Our collective desire for nostalgia is just an albatross around our neck.
I propose a new Executive Office be built, one that is not a residence, that would serve as the POTUS office.
A new residence could be built on the Naval Observatory grounds, which would be much more secure and provide more privacy for those Presidents with young families.

Sigh...Catholics over at CNS are getting themselves all worked up and demanding that Nancy Pelosi be excommunicated because she is supporting birth control coverage at the churches secular businesses. I know it is hopeless but I did a quick drive by post anyway...
So much hoopla over something that isn't really an issue to begin with if you stop and think about it.
Employee health insurance benefits are compensation, they are part of your pay. If your employer offers them then they are doing so to try to attract better and higher skilled workers than someone who does not. The Catholic Church says they should not be forced to pay for insurance that includes contraception at the many businesses they run, but that isn't really what is happening here.
That is the employees money, it is a part of their compensation, it does not belong to the Church. If they did not receive health insurance benefits then they would expect a larger paycheck instead to be able to buy their own health insurance.
Does the Church tell their non-catholic employees that they are not allowed to spend any of the money they are paid on condoms or birth control pills? Of course not, because it is the employees choice how to spend any money they have earned. If they use it for something the Church sees as a sin then that is a sin that is on the head of the employee alone, not the Church.
So since the money spent on health insurance is also the employees money why is it that the Church believes it has the right to tell them how it can be spent? Imaging if your own employer was a Muslim and told you that you could only get all of your paycheck if you agreed not to buy any pork with it?
This does not apply to employees of the Churches religious organizations, those are still exempt, they are only required to include birth control coverage at the secular businesses they run. There is no loss of Religious freedom here, the Church is not being made to spend their money on birth control, that money belongs to the employees!

The sore losers are still whining, still angry, America is still doomed, and it is all the fault of Blacks, Hispanics, and Sluts... /
The Democrats achieved a major long term goal in November, one that they have worked on for over 40 years: dumbing down the population (complements of the teacher's unions), along with the assistance of the vast quantities of communist professors in our colleges.
You see, if the average American voter's intelligence was that of what it was even 20 years ago, there would be NO WAY that Obama would be in office, let alone re-elected (whatever THAT means nowadays). There is NO WAY that the Democrats would get away with a third of the corrupt anti-American stuff that they're freely doing now, and laughing in America's face as they do it.
But now - we truly have a Nation of Idiots....
- Blacks that only vote on the basis of color and Da Free Ride, and a chance to 'stick it to da man', ala OJ Simpson murder trial verdict style.
- We have a vast quantity of Hispanics that really don't know or care about America, but as long as their illegal relatives can stay, that our southern border door is jammed open, and their invading families get the Ultimate Free Ride in the form of the Democrat-supported Dream Act, hey, yo quero, hombre!!!!! La Raza will RULE this country, you stupid gringos!
- Finally, we have a huge amount of young white single liberal slutpuppies that are programmed to feel guilty that they're white, that care only about their personal Right to Kill their unborn inconvenient children, OMG who is texting me now, and the ability to be a causal semen recepticle for the next cute guy in their college class when and how they choose....
Put all of these groups all together, and there isn't enough collective, objective intelligence to light the average home.
And we wonder how Obama got re-elected, and the Democrats still hold most of the power...
I wonder now if it'll ever change, but this country won't be around long enough for another presidential election. - America is dead - RIP

re: #67 wheat-dogghazi
What's broke about it?
"It" being our institutions of governance, I'd say there is quite a bit.
As for the executive office, other than some over reach of powers (which would likely take clarifications of the Constitution to fix), I think most of inadequacies surrounding the institution are in just making it more efficient. And, not having a Regent or aristocracy we've turned the Institution of the Presidency into the replacement ceremonial head office - one reason I wish to abandon the current WH as the Office and move the President into a office-like Office is to remove the air of landed gentry/Baron from the the whole scene.
The real problem is Congress, namely, that it is becoming less "representative". The numbers of Representatives has not increased even though population has, and now each Congressman has a district so large there is no way he/she can really be in touch with all that goes on in the district. Plus some Americans, such as those who live in DC, are still being taxed without full representation, in contradiction to our own proclaimed beliefs, and this can be extended to our "territories" and their powerless tokens in Congress.
The Senate is obsolete and anti-democratic.
The Judicial branch likewise hasn't expanded the USSC, though the case loads are much larger and as administrators of the Federal system the Supremes have to manage the growing system. If we weren't so inclined to try and imprison such a large share of our population perhaps the Federal courts wouldn't be so overwhelmed, but Americans it appears do like to send people off to prison.
Nostalgia and sentimentalism are chains.

re: #84 freetoken
Well, your suggestion to move the president out of the WH into a new office building ain't gonna do any of that.
What you want will require several amendments to the Constitution, plus some laws to limit corporate influence on Congress and reduce the number of drug offense cases that end up with imprisonment.
You can dream, anyway.

This is not an "issue" to be debated in society, it is simply a fact of life.
Schmenz:
My dear friend,
No, you were not born that way, any more than one is born a bank robber, a murderer or an abuser of animals. You have, sadly, chosen this. No one is born with unnatural instincts; quite the contrary. Whatever combination of circumstances in your life caused you to take this fatal step, I know not. But I do know that no one is born with a manner of living which will bring them horrendous venereal diseases (not to mention hepatitus-B).
There is hope for you but, like the alcoholic, you must take the first steps to overcome this. You can do it, no doubt about it. The number of times I have fallen into sin, and had to pick up and start over again, are more than I can count. But we Catholics have the Sacrament of Confession. If you are not of the Faith I would strongly urge you to study the claims made by the Catholic Church that they are, indeed, the one, true Church founded by Christ while He walked on earth.
A difficult road? Yes. But it is a road that is available to you.
I simply cannot believe that one person could just flatly deny another persons own experience like that. How does someone even become that pompous, that conceited, that lacking in empathy?

There is no such thing as consensual burglary. Or consensual bestiality. Or consensual child abuse.
But to the fundamentalists, homosexuality is the equivalent to crime, bestiality or child abuse because they are all seen as abdominations unto the Lord and should be forbidden by law.
And by the way, there is such a thing as consensual assault, we call it "NHL hockey".

Something to think about...
So a 24 year old man has a thirteen year old girl stay overnight at his house, gives her alcoholic drinks and then has sex with her.
Of course practically everyone is unanimous that he should go to prison, be declared a pedophile, and put on a sex offender registry for the rest of his life. In this society that is seen as the correct way to deal with sex offenses against children.
But what if the girl said that she actually enjoyed it? That it was a kind of "healing experience" and had taught her about her sexuality? What if she said "If this was a rape, then it was a good rape?"
It does not matter, a 13 year old cannot give informed consent, especially if she is drunk. The court would pay no attention to the wishes of the child and correctly prosecute the man for statutory rape of a minor.
But what if it was a 24 year old woman who did this and not a man? Does that somehow change things, make her actions allowable?
You probably think that the woman should be treated just like the man, that she should also be charged, right? Well no, there you would be wrong, very, very wrong.
In fact this act by the woman and those words by the child would instead go on to become part of a play that celebrates the sexuality of women. One that is performed on college campuses across the country. One that ironically is now performed in conjunction with "V-Day" violence against women (including rape) day and "Take Back the Night" campus rape awareness activities at several schools as a fund raiser.
While it is true that this story is only one out of the dozens of stories told during the play as it's defenders quickly point out, does that excuse the double standard and hypocrisy? Some schools have now altered the play to make the age of the child 16 instead of 13 as if that alone alleviates any problems with its content...sigh.
The name of the play is The Vagina Monologues that first opened off broadway in 1996 and has been being performed around the country ever since. HBO has even made a version (minus the 13 year old of course) of it for television.
The more you know...

Also there is the sad story of Robert Swope who because of complaints by the Women's Studies Department was censored and fired by the college newspaper for writing about this play.
(Our guest writer, Robert Swope, is a junior at Georgetown University. This article was censored, and he was subsequently fired, by his editors at The Hoya.)
"Your vagina, untouched by man, smells so nice, so fresh, wish I could keep it that way forever." Thus spoke the 24-year-old woman before she statutorily raped a 13-year-old girl in Eve Ensler's play, The Vagina Monologues, which thanks to the New Press (and your tuition dollars), was performed last month in Bulldog Alley on the Georgetown University campus.
The older woman, who immediately before making this rather, shall we say... illegal observation, had given a vodka and orange juice to the young girl who was spending the night at her house. The girl's mother for some foolish reason admired this woman and hoped that her daughter would benefit from the two spending some time together. When she later calls to check up on her child, worrying of all things, about boys, the woman tells her to "Trust me, there's [sic] no boys around here." Wink-wink.
After getting drunk on the older woman's booze, the 13-year-old then tells the audience how "She gently and slowly lays me out on the bed and just our bodies rubbing together makes me come [sic]. Then she does everything to me and my coochi snorcher [vagina] that I had always thought was nasty before, and wow." When it's all over, the little girl concludes that thanks to the experience, "I'll never need to rely on a man."...
Nope no problems here, carry on students...

I definitely would not go so far as to state that there is no and will be no molestation of children by a priest. But I think that at least for now the systemic abuse has been stopped and the Church leadership is on notice that it will not be allowed to occur anymore.
Also the Church was badly financially hurt by the settlements, I think they see it is in their own best interest now not to try to cover it up anymore. The big payouts and international media coverage has also let the victims know that they can win against the Church.
If I was a Priest there is no way I would even ever allow myself to be in a room alone with a child at this point, I would be too scared of a false accusation by someone looking for money.

Maybe, if one doesn't count as systemic abuse telling young gay parishioners that their sexual orientation is a sinful affront to God, something to repress and be utterly ashamed of. I'm pretty sure that worldwide the Church is still fucking up the heads of countless kids, doing an amazing amount of psychic damage and fostering the kinds of sociological conditions that incubate active discrimination and violence.

Sex battery investigation leads to discovery of bombs and video depicting sexual assault
When the woman tried to leave, Aguilar grabbed her hair and forced her into his bedroom, deputies said. There, he beat her, pointed a handgun at her, threatened to kill her and bound her at the wrists with disposable handcuffs. He later cut off the cuffs and forced the woman to perform sex acts, deputies said.
A subsequent investigation led to the execution of a search warrant Monday at Aguilar's home. Inside, deputies found five homemade bombs in an office, authorities said. The Sheriff's Office bomb squad examined the devices and found they could be ignited with a fuse.
As the search continued, deputies found several digital memory cards, one of which held a video depicting Aguilar choking and beating another woman, authorities said. He is later shown shocking the woman multiple times with a Taser before forcing her to have sex with him at gunpoint, they said.

After the next hurricane devastates NYC again we can just wall it off, declare it the sole Federal prison and throw everyone in there and concentrate on guarding the perimeter. That should solve all our problems...

Gaming the Fiscal Cliff
Politics, profit, and pageantry
By Kevin D. Williamson
The so-called fiscal cliff is one installment in a series of manufactured crises, the purpose of which is to provide the political establishment with small problems it can solve or pretend to solve while steadfastly refusing to address the much thornier problem of the long-term non-sustainability of U.S. public finances. Watching the melodrama unfold, I sometimes think I should be reviewing it in my theater column over at The New Criterion rather than analyzing it for National Review.
The fundamental unseriousness of the fiscal-cliff debate can be appreciated by examining the Corker plan (as my colleague Dan Foster does here), which probably is very close to the best that deficit hawks could hope for in terms of a bipartisan compromise — which is to say, precious little. At best, the Corker plan would reduce the growth of U.S. federal debt by about $4.5 trillion over the next decade, but it would not eliminate the deficit or reduce the debt, and it would allow for trillions of dollars to be added to the wrong side of the national ledger.
The Democrats give every indication of being interested in using fiscal-cliff hysteria to achieve nothing but a modest, almost symbolic increase in federal income-tax rates for taxpayers earning $250,000 or more, which would do very little to reduce the deficit but would confer a measure of emotional satisfaction on the Left. A fair number of small-business owners, managers, and professionals would see their taxes go up, but the actual rich — the Wall Street types, CEOs, Silicon Valley princelings, etc. — would continue to have the bulk of their income taxed at the lower capital-gains rate. That rate will go up (from 15 percent to 20 percent) absent a fiscal-cliff deal, but the hedge-funders and such still will be paying a rate about half the top income-tax rate. President Obama wants that tax increase to happen, but only for taxpayers earning $250,000 or more.

Gaming the Fiscal Cliff
Politics, profit, and pageantryBy Kevin D. Williamson
The fiscal cliff is easy to explain. It is the result of a refusal to generate revenues to pay for business running against an arbitrary debt limit. Eliminate the debt ceiling and it goes away. Return taxes to what they were under Clinton (if not Reagan) and it goes away.
If we want nice things we have to pay for them. We can pay now or we can pay later, but wailing at how much we are adding up for later while refusing to pay now is just stupid histrionics. Or in modern media terms a fiscal cliff.

The right-wing is seriously so far down the rabbit hole I have no idea how they're ever going to get back. They're more likely to wake up a Balrog than ever see the sun again.
In this case, it's an article pretending that the 'fiscal cliff'-- the increase of a taxes across the board and descreases in spending-- isn't a big deal, and is only serving as a stalking-horse to distract the gullible general public. But this brilliant NRO writer sees through this, to the real problem: the debt, oh god, the debt! We suddenly suddenly when Obama was elected really started caring about the debt so much that we have to try to repeat the mistakes of the Great Depression, especially of cutting spending right when the economy is climbing back out.
But fixing the debt is the biggest problem because they've declared it to be the biggest problem. There's no actual argument, just assertion-- it's fucking hysterical that he's claiming worrying about the fiscal cliff is paranoid insanity whereas gibbering fearmongering about the debt being the most critical fucking problem is apparently calm reason to him.
The right wing needs to stop believing in conspiracy theories and it needs to let go of the corpse of Ayn Rand. Cutting spending during a recession was fucking stupid. Cutting it right as we're climbing out-- also fucking stupid. And the massive increase in disparity of wealth between the wealthy and everyone-else is a much bigger threat to our society and country than the debt is-- and it's related. The Waltons make their money off the backs of people the US taxpayer subsidizes.
I'm so fucking tired of this bullshit. I don't want to have to devote hours and hours of my life every campaign season to fighting these whackjobs.

Yep, which rather nicely coincides not only with the metamorphosing of the Afghan and Iraq Wars into long occupations, but also the beginning of the Housing Bust. Yeah, it was effectively a bad war economy. This also included a massive ramp up into a security state.
Indeed. The contrasts between Dem and Repub presidencies are pretty stark. Reagan presided over one of the largest, if not the largest, increases in the size of the federal government. His best years on that chart came during the last height of the Cold War, when US defense spending was ramped up for the purpose of spending the Soviets into the ground. Not shown on the chart is that his successor, supposedly serving "Reagan's Third Term," saw an economy in decline as Cold War spending got slashed and the thankless job of scaling back our military overreach began.
By contrast, Clinton saw strong growth ever year after '93, when he raised taxes to protests that doing so would kill the economy. And he oversaw the continuation of the military dismantling that Bush Sr. had began. The argument has been that such growth only came because of the Internet Boom, but even if you take that out of the equation, he still showed better growth every year than Dubya did even at the height of his presidency.

Yes, thank you robot Killgore. Your obvious desire to miss the point has been noted yet again.
There are plenty of people on the left who have an overly large amount of sympathy for Bradley Manning, this is true. In terms of how important this is-- given that Manning is being prosecuted and charged under the Obama administration, obviously these left-wingers have zero input on national policy.
Dkos isn't 'reliable', but almost no one is. The factcheckers you tongue-bathe on a regular basis fuck up all the time. Dkos is avowedly partisan, holds it on their sleeve, and while I barely ever read them they look to be a perfectly good source of information as long as you realize that what's coming is from a left-wing perspective. But the article on voting rights is a perfectly good one.
Do you want to explain why you decided to lie about Dkos comments the other day to accuse another poster here of having violent fantasies? I'm not quite sure how this fits in; maybe the partisanship of DKos causes you such psychic distress that when reading it you seize up and start hallucinating moonbat comments that aren't there?

Actually no, it wasn't. The ship was identified as USS Enterprise for the film, but in actuality it was the USS Ranger that stood in for the Enterprise, which was on deployment at the time they filmed the scenes.

I remember the combination of the war with the housing boom caused plywood to skyrocket. I paid 75 bux a sheet for plywood at one time. Granted it was grade a birch but today I can get a sheet for ~25 bux.

So what happened to the U.S. hardwood plywood industry?
China grew its industrial base in hardwood plywood under a 5 year plan by 255% from 2002-2006 to over 600 producers compared to two dozen in America. Government industrial policies and programs provided subsidies to support that explosive growth. To this day, Chinese producers enjoy a reduced raw material cost advantage by using illegal logs which their government is lax to enforce. Tax rebates and other subsidies support aggressive programs to increase exports to the mature industrial economies in the United States and Europe.
When the domestic market in China cannot absorb all that is produced, and then the excess production is “dumped” into the global market. It’s a classic case. The EU put into place countervailing duties on Chinese produced hardwood plywood imported into their market. The U.S. industry seeks the same remedy.
Ironically, when the U.S. housing bubble was developing, this new U.S. demand coincided with China’s explosive capacity growth. The U.S. industry could not compete with the cheaper Chinese imports that captured the “bubble” demand and then held onto and increased their market share after the bubble burst.
The U.S. does not have an “industrial policy” to promote and protect its industry. We rely on the free market and legal trade remedies which are the only tools available to the industry. Hence, the filing of the anti-dumping and countervailing duty case against Chinese hardwood plywood producers.

I've noticed a distinct characteristic of Conservatives to interpret many things by some non-existant code.
i.e:
- Women's Rights, Planned Parenthood, Contraception, Pro-Choice, Women's Health = abortion
- "We need to invest in our infrastruture" = massive government spending programs
-"We need to help people" = Stalin and Hitler
-Any reference to violence = they are going to take my guns
As has been said many times, it's all about the narrative. They're story tellers where the story is used to produce a specific outcome. The story is more important than cold hard facts so any facts which spoil the story are ignored.

We definitely felt 2 bumps in the price of plywood and OSB at our Habitat affiliate--they were the building of the vast logistic bases in SWA, and the rebuilding effort for Katrina. Together with the loss of donations that resulted from the Bush recession, they crippled us over a decade. A house we could build for under 25K is now over 60K, our yearly builds fell from 10+ to 1-2.

Well, I thought about just starting with Federal -as that seems to be the arena the Fox News Drones seems to know so much about.
Most federal programs are administered by the states. And they have different standards for both benefits and eligibility so it is hard to get a national sense of things. What most Fox analysts do is pick out the highest benefits and lowest standards and conflate them. There are also different error rates and fraud rates for each state which are also often conflated. Error rates are percentages of cases that have error (such as $1 in benefits wrong) and fraud rates which is obviously a completely different thing.

Here are a few tips for dealing with road trains:
1. Give the drivers a wave. Driving road trains is a lonely boring job with some serious responsibilities and these guys usually appreciate the occasional bit of human contact.
2. If you get the chance, have a chat to the drivers. They are usually a great source of accurate information about road and (especially) wind conditions, other cyclists in the area, places to eat etc. This also re-enforces the idea in their minds that cyclists are people, not obstacles. [NB: This technique works with truckies but not always with caravan drivers !]
3. Keep your eyes open and get right off the road if you sense potential problems, like a road train behind being overtaken, oncoming traffic, poor visibility etc.
4. If you're going to get off the road, work out early where you're going to get off, and signal you're intention to do so! Signaling gives you a bit more time to get off the road without forcing the truckie to play chicken with the oncoming traffic. [Not that these games are any contest!]
5. If a roadtrain driver blasts his horn to ask you to get off the road, GET OFF THE ROAD !!
6. Once off the road, wait until the all of the road train has passed before getting back on the road. This might be obvious but believe it or not a cyclist was killed on the Stuart Highway a couple of years ago after vacating the road for a truck, only to try to get back on after the second trailer passed to be collected by the third trailer.

re: #26 Our Precious Bodily Fluids
Every color photo I've ever seen of the White House interior has featured horrendously gaudy furniture. It always looks like it came from a TBN set.
You might be seeing some of the historical rooms, which, I readily concede, can be jarring to the modern eye. However, I know that I, as a taxpayer, would be furious if those rooms were redone to solely suit a modern taste: the White House's history is one of its sources of prestige, or, gravitas. We were always a very young country; now we have a history behind us, and it would be a bad tactical move to try to throw that away, even visually.
As for the the Oval Office, it has historically been yellow, and sometimes with blue. Me, I've always hated that, but bowed to the Occupant - the President's the one who's going to have to work in there!!. The Seal is usually the motif for the carpet, which then kinda dictates that color. I can see why some people don't like the lumpy corduroy beige couches Obama's got in there, but at least they are unobtrusive! They certainly aren't as jarring as the brick red drapes!! Who picked THOSE? They don't go with anything! (Ok, calming down, now...)
And as for the "cowboy statue"? That's a Remington, one of America's premiere sculptors, and was a gift, appropriately enough, to Teddy Roosevelt. If we are ever able to divorce the cowboy era from the genocide of the native inhabitants, we can point to Frederick Remington as the visual voice of the American Spirit.
