DC Comics hires anti-gay writer for Superman series
Comic giant DC has commissioned Orson Scott Card, author of the award-winning and best-selling Ender’s Game sci-fi series, to write for DC’s Adventures of Superman series. The digital comic is set to be published in April.
The news has sparked a furious backlash from Card’s critics. Card is a long-time critic of homosexuality and has called gay marriage “the end of democracy in America”. In 2009 he became a board member of the National Organization for Marriage, a group that campaigns against same-sex marriage.

People having equal rights in marriage is the end of democracy in America. Yeah… Just like letting black students be able to have the same quality of education as white ones in the South was tyrannical. I mean shit, I can actually somewhat understand if you have religious objections to gay marriage. I mean, I think it’s a load of shit to use your religion to justify bigotry but it’s more honest than claiming that giving gays equal rights somehow impedes democracy.

Frankly how pathetic is it that the GOP is having Nugent as a guest of honor at the SOTU? Yeah this from the party who’s nominee bitched because Jay-Z jokingly rapped that he had 99 problems but a Mitt wasn’t one of them. I don’t want to hear right wingers ever complain about rappers again when their ideology struts out Ted Nugent who told the President of the United States to suck on his gun ever again.

“We know that the president will have the state of the union stacked and jammed with props, children, and victims of violent crime, ” Nugent said. “And my friends wanted me to attend to counter that the way that I do: with facts, statistics and common sense and logic and a celebration of self-evident truths. So I will be taking on the media orgy following the State of the Union Address.”
Nugent said the media does not realize he is a “force to be reckoned with” and therefore he will “dominate them.”

There is the legal state of marriage and there is the sacrament of holy matrimony. They used to be identical, and to a lot of people they still are.
We need to make the distinction clear: you may still think it immoral and consider that they are not married in the eyes of God, you just may not deny them their right to enter into the civil institution of marriage and the benefits it accords.
Just as you might think it immoral to drink or gamble, but you cannot deny people access to bars or casinos.

They’re damned confused by this. Marriage started out as a SECULAR institution, not a religious one (what, they think the Christian god blessed weddings imperial China?). Let’s return it to what it was. Let it return to what it TRADITIONALLY was.
26 | Sol Berdinowitz Mon, Feb 11, 2013 11:49:37pm |
At least in Europe, the local priest was also the equivalent of the registry office or justice of the peace, he kept records and performed the ceremony, there was no such thing as a civil ceremony.
And once again, you have the freedom to disagree with and even to voice your disagreement with the morality of gay marriage, but the law states clearly that you cannot deny the right to marry to people based on race, religion or sex.
27 | Kragar (Antichrist ) Mon, Feb 11, 2013 11:55:38pm |

I think that evolved from a marriage that was sanctioned by the state for inheritance purposes, which clarified common law practices.

I haven’t kept up with him but:

2) he used to be liberal on economic issues and voted Democrat
3) he was all war-blogger gung ho for the Iraq war
4) he softened his anti-gay position slightly, being against gay marriage (on thoroughly paranoid grounds, something like “gays don’t want or need marriage, leftists are just trying to force it on us to make us submit to their power”)
5) he caught a thoroughly florid, ugly case of Obama Derangement Syndrome and is probably ranting like a fucking Bircher about how Obama impurified his vital bodily fluids. Have you ever seen a gang banger drink water? Of course you haven’t! …

Dogs are descended from wolves, who are also social creatures, their brains are obviously wired to be responsive to social cues and think and act in terms of their place in the social order. In that sense, it is natural that they share a lot of similarities to humans.

Carnival cruises have been running a couple of ads that attempt to portray the cruise as a perfect blend of serenity and ease as compared to a jaunt to a park where bears and mountain lions attack unwitting folks in a car, or go to an amusement park where the ride leaves them stuck upside down.
Guess it would be bad to point out that Carnival’s Triumph is being towed back to Mobile Alabama with about 4,200 passengers after an engine room fire that disabled the ship, resulting in a loss of potable water, power to flush toilets, and has turned the ship into a mess. No AC has meant that folks have had to sleep up on deck.
Carnival’s going to be giving refunds to a whole bunch of folks and is expected to take an $80 million charge for repairs and lost cruises due to taking the ship out of service for those repairs.
I’d take the park over having no food or operable bathrooms. Thank you very much.

Bryan, more water evaporates into the atmosphere with more heat. So when things cool down during local weather and it snows, more snow falls because there is more precipitation in the air because of more heat evaporating it. Good morning Lizards. Some sun today in Philadelphia after yesterday’s foggy day.
Was awakened this morning by cat warfare.
L.C. has discovered that the laundry baskets make good cat bunkers from which to sortie to make assaults on Puffin. After which he retreats back to the basket to lurk until the next attack. Puffin, in turn, has seized the high ground of the window sill and hides behind the venetian blinds by the bed.
The open ground in between has been the location of several cat tussles with no effective victor. A truce was declared when staff finally got out of bed and provided rations to all parties.

GI Bill which many credit with establishing the modern American middle class which is a bad thing if you’re in the almost feudal mindset of many conservatives these days. Of course, it’s all hypocritical nonsense since the right in this country has never liked a new prison, new drug ban, etc that they haven’t liked. Ashley Judd’s humanitarian work has revolved around becoming a global ambassador for YouthAIDS, a prevention program under the Population Services International. She has been a member of their Board of Directors since 2004, also. Judd has travelled with YouthAIDS to places affected by illness and poverty such as Cambodia, Kenya, Rwanda, and many others.[27]
Inspired by her travels, which allowed her to witness the life of the poor and uneducated, she has since become an advocate for preventing poverty and promoting awareness internationally. She has met with political and religious leaders, heads of states, diplomats, and leaders on behalf of the deprived to convey the message to those who have the power to bring about political and social change.
There you go, more foreign policy experience than Sarah Palin ;)
She’s also very active in causes promoting women’s rights in Africa:
On September 8, 2010, CNN interviewed Judd about her second humanitarian mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo.[34] Judd traveled with the Enough Project, a project to end genocide and crimes against humanity. In the interview, Judd discussed her efforts to raise awareness about how conflict minerals fuel sexual violence in Congo. During her trip, Judd visited hospitals for victims of sexual violence, camps for displaced persons, mines, and civil society organizations. On September 30, 2010, cnn.com published an Op-ed titled “Ashley Judd: Electronics fuel unspeakable violence”[35] by Ashley Judd and the Enough Project’s co-founder John Prendergast regarding the continued violence in Congo.
Here she is with “LOL you went with rape-baby-gift-God-guy instead of me” Richard Lugar.

The corker is that the incumbent Dem, the late Jon Adler, basically went Blue Dog Democrat to save his job. He practically voted against everything Obama did, mainly due to pressure from the Tea Party/conservatives/village idiots.
And Adler still lost.
To Runyan’s credit, he does a lot of work with veterans. To his detriment, he fucking votes lockstep with every obstructionist policy (a.k.a, all of them) that the GOP throws up.

Yeah name recognition and capitalizing off of anti-Democratic sentiment. What the incumbent did reminds me of something a Virginia Congressman did. Glenn Nye pretty much ran away from Obama even though he had been elected in part due to the high turnout in 2008. I mean whatever, it’s politics but I hated the atmosphere created in 2010 where people had to run away from what had just elected them two years earlier simply because a lot of people were buying TP revisionist nonsense.

Details on the quake that indicated that North Korea detonated its third nuclear device.
The precision with which we can identify quakes has come in handy in figuring out what the North has done - to a point. We have some idea of the output of the weapon detonated based on the magnitude quake detected, but we don’t know the size of the weapon itself - how much it’s been miniaturized, efficiencies, or whether it was meant to be an even bigger weapon (or smaller - a fizzle) without additional information that could potentially come if radioactive particles are released through the access tunnel.
In any event, the test has rankled both the Russians and Chinese, and could lead to still more UN sanctions against North Korea. Separately, the US and other western countries should be expected to impose still more unilateral sanctions.

Marines; No bolts in weapons for Inauguration
Again, the “bolts” were present for the Marines. Comments…
• 2001 I was on my brigades color guard when Pres Bush came to Ft Stewart. We also had to remove our bolts. Well before he came, we had a formation in the gym and the Secret Service walked down the line checking everyones rifle, and my CSMs M9 to see if our bolts were removed. They also ran a magic wand over us to make sure we didn’t have anything else. I was told by an agent that one of the females on the Div Color guard set the wand off when they ran it across her crotch. When it chirped she blurted out “Oh that’s just my ring….I mean, uh…” So much for the no piercings policy in 670-1.
• I have a friend that is a retired Washington State Patrol Trooper. He was in a detail of troopers that was sent to D.C. for the Inaugaration of Jimmy Carter. He said they had to turn in their ammo for their .357mag service revolvers for the parade and ceremonies. I was lucky enough not to have a president visit my jurisdiction when I was sheriff. Colleagues that did have one said that it was common for the people nearby to not be armed. The Secret Service is a pain in the ass for local LE. I am not in any way sticking up for the dipshit in chief, I think the Secret Service has had the policy for some time. IMHO.
• This is nothing new. When we did a parade down Waikiki celebrating the anniversery of VJ day and President Clinton came, we had to remove the bolts from our M-16s. We even had bright orange stickers put on our collars to let the SS know that we had been cleared.
• When Pres Bush came to Ft Bragg in 2008 for 82nd Div Review, we had to remove bolts from our M4s and springs and followers from the magazines. M9s had barrel removed and spring/followers removed from mags. They marched everyone through a checkpoint where we had to shotgun our weapons to show no bolt. Bottom Line, it’s a secret service req’t that’s been around for a while.
In conclusion. Try some Valium next time. //

Mornin’ everyone…looks like we had our zombie apocalypse yesterday…it was in Montana. Yeah, I missed it too.
The Montana Television Network says hackers broke into the Emergency Alert System of Great Falls affiliate KRTV and its CW station Monday.
KRTV says on its website the hackers broadcast that “dead bodies are rising from their graves” in several Montana counties.
The alert claimed the bodies were “attacking the living” and warned people not to “approach or apprehend these bodies as they are extremely dangerous.”

I love the dissonance they have in relation to the military and law enforcement. These are the “stormtroopers” that will simultaneously come to seize their guns, join the revolution, shoot down innocent civilians, and have to be given disabled weapons/no ammo when in the general vicinity of Obama.
This falls into line with my lack of surprise about some sympathy leaking out about Dorner and the situation in L.A. Piles of crap spewed about tyrannical law enforcement, the long history of police corruption in L.A., and the fact that you can rapidly make the entire affair to date look like a plot for an action movie (with the obvious caveat that there is this behind the scenes conspiracy going on that has framed Dorner.)

Yeah, we’d just have to ignore the sequester that he signed into law and that everyone is now running away from because even the brain dead GOP leadership knows austerity would cripple the slow-recovering economy.

I do wonder where their outrage is over Reagan and the Marine barracks because goddamn you know damn well if that happened under Obama, there would be calls for Obama’s impeachment but Reagan gets a pass because he’s a God to them. But no we’re to believe that only Obama has had embassies attacked in his presidency because ODS above all else.

Shit McConnell admitted that their goal was to make him a one term president. And I don’t think the spirit of that goal has changed since he’s been re-elected. Instead of of a one term president, they want to make him an ineffective two term president and then they’ll try bullshiting the American people claiming Obama doesn’t want to work with us or get things done when they’ve been obstructing him left and right. If Russia and China are condemning (and they are), that means that a SCR is quite possible with still more sanctions.
Each of the countries can impose their own unilateral sanctions or strengthen the ones already in place - above and beyond the sanctions already imposed by the UN for violations of prior agreements.
To date, China’s looked to block any action that could lead to the regime falling in Pyongyang because it could lead to a mass refugee crisis that they don’t want to deal with, but they aren’t going to want a rogue regime pulling them further into an international crisis that serves no one well. China also plays role of intermediary since it still has relations with the regime. China could let new sanctions go (by abstaining) in the Security Council as a telegraphing that they aren’t happy with North Korea.

GWB was on deck when the North detonated its first nuke, and his approach was more sanctions. Same with his successor.
The North is using the nukes as an extortion plot to wring concessions of some form from the West, all while reminding everyone that they still exist as a boil on the ass end of space. All while the South moves ahead with technical sophistication and a modern economy and technological sophistication, all the North manages is to rattle its self-imposed cage with nuclear temper tantrums and propaganda videos that crib western music and video games.
That’s all while most of North Korea can barely feed itself and the North still runs a gulag archipelago for those who question the regime.

NRA Convention Helps Distribute Literature Calling For Secession And Civil War
In “What Would Davy Crockett Say?”, author Karl P. Koenigs calls for liberating “our home country of Wisconsin.” If that doesn’t work, Koenigs advocates “a combo Civil/Re-Revolutionary War” to “restore the Rule of OUR Laws on our elected, non-elected and wannabe elected Republican and Democrat Federal servants through the refreshment of the Tree of Liberty by its natural manure.” The last part is a reference to the Thomas Jefferson quote that “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
If you understand the Constitution you throw-up every single time you turn on the TV and hear about another thing or program the U.S. Government is ‘going to do for (TO) the American People’. This is a most heinous disease that can only be cured by the constitutional De-Centralized power of our home country of Wisconsin restoring our “supreme Laws” on our Federal public servants within our borders; OR otherwise by a combo Civil/Re-Revolutionary War with the very same goal to restore the Rule of OUR Laws on our elected, non-elected and wannabe elected Republican and Democrat Federal servants through the refreshment of the Tree of Liberty by its natural manure.

LOL, GOP Hispanic outreach.
Anti-Immigrant Republicans Block ‘GOP en Español’ Outreach Program
After resoundingly losing the Hispanic vote in 2012, Republicans are making their pitch to Hispanic voters. These new efforts range from pushing for immigration reform to Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) plan to deliver the GOP’s State of the Union response in both Spanish and English. However, the House Republican Conference’s new “GOP en Español” initiative to distribute Spanish translations of Republican State of the Union reactions proved to be the last straw for some factions of the party.
Opposition from Rep. Steve King (R-IA), who has sponsored “English-only” legislation to make English the official language of the US, stalled the launch of GOP en Español. In an interview with the National Journal, King explained:
“There’s a conflicting message that comes out from the Republicans if we want to recognize the unifying power of English, and meanwhile, we send out communications in multiple languages. Official business and documents needs to be in English.” […] He says that English is “empowering and unifying” and that the GOP en Español program “sends a subliminal message in contradiction.”

Hmmm… the SOTU. The GOP response will be to sit on their hands during most of the speech and expect the usual theatrics whenever the President calls for spending on infrastructure and things that the nation needs to do to stay competitive, but which it cannot afford without raising taxes, closing loopholes, or otherwise raising revenues. Spending cuts alone will not solve the nation’s budgetary problems.
At the same time, I hope the president uses his time to tell Congress to act on dealing with the debt ceiling - that they agreed to a budget and that they have to agree to pay for it. Deem it done (aka the Gephardt rule). Mock the obstructionism on everything that has been proposed by the Administration, including universal background checks that can help reduce gun violence across the country and should otherwise have widespread support but for the NRA demonizing anything and everything as confiscation.
Go after the GOP for blocking judicial and other nominees, including the Secretary of Defense during a time of war over nonsensical ravings about Benghazi.
Let’s not forget, that after the Hizbullah bombing of the Marine barracks that killed 241 in the building and 299 overall - President Reagan warned of retaliation, and that amounted to all of a few rounds lobbed by the battleship New Jersey against several targets in Lebanon and a few airstrikes by the Navy in December (2 months after the attacks), but otherwise tucking tail and running from Hizbullah. That move emboldened the terror group and has had long term consequences for the region. It was one of the worst failings of his presidency.
The GOP is going after the President because of the fog of war in the minutes and hours after the attack became known. All the hysterical calls for impeachment are hysterical and baseless, but that isn’t stopping the GOP wingnuts from going to ground with them and peddling this nonsense on an ever more visible stage. And they’re using it to block a nominee for Defense Secretary during a time of war, which is itself unprecedented.

Says someone who obviously knows jack all about linguistics. Language is beautiful. Each one has its quirks but they are all unique. Certain nuances and subtleties of one language can be easily lost when translated to another.
Contrary to what Mr. King thinks, English is actually considered a somewhat limited language compared to others.
Our separate languages are what make us who we are. Mr. King’s whole idea of English being “empowering and unifying” is stupid. You think the Native Americans were speaking the King’s English when they first encountered the British?

Like telling these guys who tell you they need an assault rifle because “The Minutemen fought tyranny” that the Minutemen were barely effective auxiliaries who never won a battle on their own against real troops and Washington hated them. They don’t want to hear that part.
These days, they seem to think The Patriot was based on a real story and want to believe that a rag-tag band of militia can somehow do better than organized and trained soldiers can. And while militia did play a part in the Battle of Cowpens, which is supposed to be what’s depicted as the big battle in the film, for the most part they were ill-regarded and treated with little respect by both sides.

Funny, way I remember it, Crockett died fighting a hopeless battle against a numerically superior foe. Not exactly the ideal situation that most of these numbnuts would want to face.
People always forget what actually happened at the Alamo. They seem to think that it was an overwhelming victory against tyranny or some shit.
Everyone there died. Santa Anna stomped them mercilessly, leaving only handful of non-combatants to tell what had gone on. It changed the tide of Texas independence, sure, but at the cost of everyone who fought there.

It was the symbolism that lived on long after the majority of those not killed in the battle had been executed. “Remember the Alamo” is a motto not because it was the first successful battle, but because it was a slaughter which served as a reason for revenge.

2 charged with murder in Hadiya Pendleton slaying
Two reputed gang members were out for revenge from a previous shooting when they opened fire on a group of students in a South Side park last month, killing 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton in a heartbreaking case that has brought national attention to Chicago’s rampant gun violence, police said.
Michael Ward, 18, and Kenneth Williams, 20, were each charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in the Jan. 29 attack that also left two teens wounded.
Ward confessed to police that he and Williams mistook a Pendleton companion for rivals who had shot and wounded Williams last July, police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said at a news conference Monday night at the Area Central police headquarters.

Those are all cases unto themselves. I got no trouble with English being the official language of government in the USA, but neither do I have any problem with the notion that lots of people use other languages to communicate privately.
I grew up in a household where my mom and grandma spole Croatian, the neighbors spoke Spanish at home and we we were regulars at a restaurant where the owners spoke Greek to each other and most of their staff.
But the GOP is sending a message that they consider speaking Spanish within the border of the USA to be some sort of threat to our integrity.

Likewise I expect the GOP “rebuttal” will be much the same that it has been in past years: Obama is bad, Obama is wrong, we’re right and the sooner you figure that out, the sooner we can go back to screwing you over. Though this time, we supposedly are getting the added bonus that it will be given by a Latino who’ll be speaking in Spanish. As if the GOP could be any more transparent.
Then for the political junkies, they can also listen to Rand Paul give the Tea Party “rebuttal,” which might as well be the Libertarian one: Big government bad, Obama is a socialist, we need to gut the budget, and America was so much better when men were walking around in tricorne hats.

US drone kills top Al Qaeda cleric in Yemen: reports
Sanaa: A drone strike in the eastern Yemeni province of Shabwa last month killed the top religious cleric for Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a source close to AQAP said on Tuesday.
“A drone strike had targetted Sheikh Adel al-Abab’s vehicle but he escaped and fled to a mountainous region where a raid by another drone killed him immediately,” the source told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Abab had graduated from an Islamic studies centre, the Dawa Centre, in Sanaa and had served as AQAP’s top religious cleric.

Wow…
I think we’re blessed with all kinds of progress in the last 10 years.
This was not possible. Or maybe for a very few people back then. Look at us now. We use more sophisticated satellites to view the solar system, NASA can calculate all the data with more advanced machines, post it on a nifty device called youtube and we can watch it all in glorious high definition on very fast computers.
That’s progress!
