Meet the Press: Anti-Science Gov. Jindal Still Pushing His Scam

Phony reformer says nothing needs to change
Politics • Views: 28,603

Here’s Louisiana’s creationist Governor Bobby Jindal on Meet the Press today, helpfully explaining that even though he’s been saying the GOP needs to change its ways (to help position himself for a presidential run), they don’t actually need to change anything — anything at all! — about their policies.

Starting with gay rights, which Jindal of course is utterly opposed to. When David Gregory ever-so-gently presses him on typical Republican issues, it becomes clear that Jindal’s public relations push is simply a scam — kabuki theater for the Beltway media. He might as well have ended his spiel with “nudge nudge, wink wink,” because he’s not fooling anyone.

Since the GOP has no interest in changing, I propose NBC no longer waste its hard-earned dollars on something called “wingnut-monitoring.”

How does he expect this to work? This is like double-Kabuki— there’s no way Jindal can be dumb enough to think that taking this approach and talking about it is going to be successful.

Republicans can hate on gays and still win national elections. And

vegetarians can eat meat and still call themselves vegetarians.

Works for me.

It will be successful controlling the base. At this point, the GOP can’t do anything else.

Nobody else trusts them, and even a cautious move to the early 20th century will antagonize the base and get The Great Limbaugh belching fartfire at them, marginalizing them even more.

Mich. GOP pushes on with electoral vote plan

Republicans handed Bobby Schostak another two-year term as state chairman Saturday and overwhelmingly endorsed a plan to change Michigan presidential electoral vote rules in a way opponents charge is intended to distort election results in favor of GOP candidates.

By a 1,370-132 margin at the party convention in Lansing, GOP members approved a resolution backing a proposal from Rep. Pete Lund, R-Shelby Township, to divvy-up 14 of the state’s 16 electoral votes according to which candidate got the most votes in each congressional district. The other two would go to the state-wide vote total winner.

re: #11 jamesfirecat

This party is stone dead!

They have painted themselves into a corner: they have to maintain their base and can win state and local elections with their fundamentalist, anti-tax, anti-gay, anti-abortion/contraception approach, but they will have trouble fielding a candidate who has a chance at a national level.

14 dragonath  Sun, Feb 24, 2013 11:34:03am

From further down in that same article:

Schostak bridges divide

Schostak had to rally his strongest backers to remain chairman. The official count wasn’t announced, but GOP officials said his proportional margin was 52 percent to Todd Courser’s 48 percent.

Courser is a Lapeer attorney and accountant who describes himself as a constitutional conservative and claimed to have support from party members who’d backed the candidacy of Ron Paul in last year’s primary election.

Did anyone on the panel, at any point in the conversation, point out to Jindal that this was the problem with Republicans?

Eh, you know what? Never mind. The Republicans on this board barely acknowledge there’s a problem, and they appear to be grounded in reality. I can’t see Beltway Insiders on the Sunday panel shows doing this, for fearing of upsetting their guests.

18 dragonath  Sun, Feb 24, 2013 11:44:32am

Michigan has a history of doing this:

All states had discarded this method of elector selection [electoral districts] after 1832.

However, this method reappeared in Michigan for the 1892 election.[59] Before the election, the Democratic Party had gained control of Michigan’s state legislature and changed the method used from at-large popular voting to electoral district voting in order to capture at least a portion of the state’s electoral votes (at the time, Michigan tended to vote Republican).[59]

The plan worked, and Michigan split its vote: nine votes for Republican Benjamin Harrison and five votes for Democrat Grover Cleveland. Once the Republican party regained control of the state legislature, the method of elector selection was switched back to at-large popular voting.[59]

19 Tigger2  Sun, Feb 24, 2013 12:01:22pm

If these guys were really smart they’d devise a system where they would choose how to divvy up the EVs after the election, so they could always choose the method more favorable to them. Hell, they’re already admitting they can’t win honestly any more, so why not?

I expect to hear Prince Rebus propose this before 2016, to overwhelming Republican support.

I doubt whether it has much potential bearing on American politics, but Canadian politics offers a somewhat historical example of what can a happen when a conservative movement splits apart.

After the Progressive Conservative (also known as the Tories) party was all but obliterated in the 1993 election (that’s not an exaggeration, they came away with only TWO seats, far less than needed even for official party status) there were many who doubted they’d ever be relevant again and backers fled the party in droves.

Eventually this led to the morphing of the Reform party (a conservative 3rd party) into the Canadian Alliance, which included elements from both the Reform and PC side. Despite the formation of the Alliance Party, the PCs/Tories limped on. As a result, the conservative vote was routinely split in Federal Elections and the Liberals were able to stay in power for 13 consecutive years.

What finally changed the tide?

Well, aside from damage the Liberal party did to itself (by way of a scandal), the other major development was that the PC/Tories and Canadian Alliance finally agreed to kiss and make up and become the Conservative Party of Canada.

They regained power in 2006 and still hold it today.

So it seems to me that this Tea Party Republican/Rove Republican split is a natural part of the process the GOP will have to undergo in order to emerge once again as a united, viable party in American politics.

As you said, you don’t know how much potential bearing this has on American politics: was the Canadian conservative movement taken over by racist, misogynist, anti-abortionist, creationist, gun-nut neanderthals who lived in an echo chamber made up of their own news sources and bloggers?

Did they write off enormous blocs of the Canadian populace as being too dependent on government largesse to have any interest in their message?

No but the PCs did end up in a position where they were practically irrelevant to Canadian politics on a national level and might well never be again. They gotten beaten so bad in that 1993 vote practically nobody took them seriously anymore.

I don’t think the Bloc will be around much longer. Like the GOP demographics are going to do them in.

The upcoming generation of Quebecois aren’t nearly as isolated intellectually and emotionally from Canada. The Bloc was founded by people in reaction to decades of, well abuse isn’t quite a strong enough description. Malevolent neglect maybe better. Being French Canadian often kept a person from any sort of power in Canada. Quebecois were pretty much second class citizens.

Plus Quebec for a long time was under the sway of Maurice Duplessis who was pretty much like an Old South political ‘boss’. I believe that sharpened the anger of a lot of Quebecois. Most of the

separatistes

were opponents of Duplessis.

But that era is long over and most of those separatistes are gone, and their anger with them. Without those people, the Bloc will go the way of Duplessis’s Union Nationle.

They aren’t a national party. From what I read, the Bloc Quebecois doesn’t much care what happens to Canada outside of Quebec. They are something of an ethnic nationalist party, where as the other three major parties are much more about ideas, although geography still plays a strong role.

The latest fauxtrage over at Breitbart:

Former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), President Barack Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, co-authored a 2009 report that called for U.S. troops to lead a peacekeeping force that would patrol the future borders between Israel and a Palestinian state.

The report, referenced Saturday by Israel National News, also suggested that peace could be imposed from outside by the U.S., describing arguments to the contrary as “invalid.”

The report, co-authored by Hagel with Carter administration Secretary of State Zbigniew Brzezinski, and former George H.W. Bush adviser Brent Scowcroft, among others, was produced in an effort to influence Obama administration policy in the president’s first term. It called upon the new president to make resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict a top priority “early in his presidency” and to override “certain domestic constituencies.”

The report called for the U.S. military to be deployed as part of its suggested plan for peace:

A non-militarized Palestinian state, together with security mechanisms that address Israeli concerns while respecting Palestinian sovereignty, and a U.S.- led multinational force to ensure a peaceful transitional security period. This coalition peacekeeping structure, under UN mandate, would feature American leadership of a NATO force supplemented by Jordanians, Egyptians and Israelis. We can envision a five-year, renewable mandate with the objective of achieving full Palestinian domination of security affairs on the Palestine side of the line within 15 years.

National Prayer Breakfast speaker lectured Obama on flat tax to ‘please’ God

As the president was forced to sit and listen, Carson had suggested that Biblical “tithing” would be a better system than the current progressive tax where wealthy Americans pay a higher rate than the poor.

During an interview that aired on Sunday, Fox News host Chris Wallace asked Carson if he had any regrets about upstaging the president and hijacking the non-partisan prayer breakfast.

“I serve God,” Carson explained. “And my purpose is to please Him. And if God be for you, who can be against you?”

The neurosurgeon is retiring from his career as a surgeon in June and has said that a possible run for president was “up to God.”

The following recommendations for U.S. Middle East peacemaking were submitted to the administration of President Barack Obama by a bipartisan group of ten former senior government officials: Zbigniew Brzezinski, Chuck Hagel, Lee H. Hamilton, Carla Hills, Nancy Kassebaum-Baker, Thomas R.Pickering, Brent Scowcroft, Theodore C. Sorensen, Paul A. Volcker, and James D. Wolfensohn. All of them are Senior Advisors of the U.S./Middle East Project and members of its International Board, chaired by General Scowcroft.

Yeah, chaired by noted hippie Brent Scowcroft. There are numerous signatories and Pollak is making it sound like Hagel is the sole author. Regardless, it’s an interesting idea and one that a secretary of defense COULD NOT implement.

The latest fauxtrage over at Breitbart:

Dumb fucks didn’t read past their bias.

The report, referenced Saturday by Israel National News, also suggested that peace could be imposed from outside by the U.S., describing arguments to the contrary as “invalid.”’

Here is what they read:(Emphasis mine)

Previous initiatives having failed, the incoming administration will no doubt be urged to defer or avoid renewed engagement for three reasons:
1. Prioritizing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would distract the new president from efforts to address critical challenges to the nation’s security: Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Russia, and threats from terror organizations.
2. Peace cannot be imposed by the U.S.A. or any outside party. The only enduring solution will be one conceived by the parties themselves.
3. Pressing both sides to reach agreement may risk angering domestic constituencies.
We believe all three arguments are invalid.

Here’s what the report says about US involvement in the peace process: (emphasis mine)

To maximize the prospects for success, we urge four key steps, drawing on lessons from past successes and failures.
1. Present a Clear U.S. Vision to End the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: The dispute between the two sides is too deep, and the discrepancies of power between them too vast, for them to solve their conflict without the U.S. acting as a determined outside and evenhanded advocate and facilitator.

The rest of the report talks about the US as facilitator.

That last is minor factor against negotiations, but not one likely to change: If forced to choose, it remains clear that the US would chose Israel over the Palestinians or neutrality. IMO, that’s actually the correct stance to have.

96 Charles Johnson  Sun, Feb 24, 2013 2:27:22pm

The peacekeeping force recommended by this report IS NOT intended to “impose peace” — it’s to ensure peace and security during the transitional period to a two-state solution.

What an asshole Joel Pollak is. Just flat out lying again.

re: #94 Charles Johnson

Wow, Pollak’s description of this report could not possibly be more misleading. These people are completely shameless.

Incredibly so:

Hagel’s call for U.S. troops to be deployed to the future border between Israel and a new Palestinian state contrasts sharply with his general reluctance to deploy troops abroad, and his repeated insistence on the limits of U.S. military power.

98 Charles Johnson  Sun, Feb 24, 2013 2:31:22pm

It’s also extremely clear from the context of the rest of the report that this peacekeeping force is intended mainly to protect ISRAEL during this transition:

A non-militarized Palestinian state, together with security mechanisms that address Israeli concerns while respecting Palestinian sovereignty, and a U.S.- led multinational force to ensure a peaceful transitional security period. This coalition peacekeeping structure, under UN mandate, would feature American leadership of a NATO force supplemented by Jordanians, Egyptians and Israelis. We can envision a five-year, renewable mandate with the objective of achieving full Palestinian domination of security affairs on the Palestine side of the line within 15 years.

101 Charles Johnson  Sun, Feb 24, 2013 2:37:44pm

Pollak says:

In his Cairo speech, Obama portrayed the creation of Israel as solely resulting from the Holocaust…

Here’s what Obama actually said:

America’s strong bonds with Israel are well known. This bond is unbreakable. It is based upon cultural and historical ties, and the recognition that the aspiration for a Jewish homeland is rooted in a tragic history that cannot be denied.

Around the world, the Jewish people were persecuted for centuries, and anti-Semitism in Europe culminated in an unprecedented Holocaust. Tomorrow, I will visit Buchenwald, which was part of a network of camps where Jews were enslaved, tortured, shot and gassed to death by the Third Reich. Six million Jews were killed — more than the entire Jewish population of Israel today. Denying that fact is baseless, it is ignorant, and it is hateful. Threatening Israel with destruction — or repeating vile stereotypes about Jews — is deeply wrong, and only serves to evoke in the minds of Israelis this most painful of memories while preventing the peace that the people of this region deserve.

How the hell can you read “Obama portrayed the creation of Israel as solely resulting from the Holocaust” into that? Not only did he not say this, he didn’t say anything like it.

There really is something haywire in Pollak’s brain.

102 Charles Johnson  Sun, Feb 24, 2013 2:39:33pm

In fact, it would be pretty hard to come up with a more pro-Jewish and pro-Israel statement than Obama’s in that speech.

But Joel Pollak sees evidence of antisemitism.

I swear. I don’t even.

Yeah, Langfan is pretty clearly going Godwin. Supposedly Hagel is advocating for a “lasting solution” (read “Final Solution”) thanks to his German-Polish (read Nazi) DNA. This shit is WAY the hell out there:

But get this, in early 2009, Hagel proved his total obsession with annihilating Israel by his stating in the 2009 paper’s preface: “In short, the next six to twelve months may represent the last chance for a fair, viable and lasting solution.” (Toto, we’re not in Nebraska 2009 anymore!) So, in 2009, Hagel was fiercely advocating for 60,000 US troops to have been already deployed by 2010, and 45 Billion US dollars already poured down the drain!! Such defense policy insanity conclusively proves Hagel is uniquely and inherently disqualified to be US Defense Secretary. Hagel’s 2009 “White Paper” shows only one thing: Obama has, in Hagel, knowingly nominated someone whose abysmal defense policy judgment is only “exceeded” by his evident virulent genetic in-bred German-Polish hate for both Israeli and American Jews.

I give it 9.5 Taitz on the wingnut scale.

1.0 Taitz being equivalent to 1.0 Gigli in the movies, correct?

I read that some time ago. I’m still trying to get it out of my head.

Langfan has predicted $300 a barrel oil if “Israel, our bulwark against Islam, falls.”
He’s apparently making a living in the panic industry.

Yeah, and his “Topographic Map System” WRT Israel’s water supply seems to be linked to settlements and the desire to expel the Palestinians from “Judea and Samaria” (the right wingers almost always refer to the West Bank as Judea & Samaria—it appears to be some kind of dog whistle).

That woman’s torso looks really long. Her bellybutton is too high for starters.

Even if distorted, the woman’s torso excites me a lot more than the AR-15. But, then again, I’m not a Republican.

DERP: Hagel: Enforce ‘Palestine’ On The Pre ‘67 Lines By Sending U.S. Troops Into A $160B Death Trap

The real reason President Obama wants Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense so bad is not just because he’s a Republican who can be a convenient figleaf for the president’s planned hollowing out of our military.

It’s because he profoundly agrees with President Obama’s views on Israel and with top level Obama advisers like the president’s NSC assistant Samantha Power. The way to ‘solve’ what they see as the Israel problem is to invade with U.S. troops, forcibly evict any Jews living outside the pre ‘67 lines including Jerusalem and leave American ‘peacekeepers’ in place to enforce it.

That is exactly what Chuck Hagel, long time Israel hater and former Carter NSC adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, Brent Scowcraft, Arab lobbyist Carla Hills and a slew of the usual suspects proposed to President Obama in a 2009 report entitled ““A Last Chance for a Two-State Israel-Palestine Agreement”.

The report calls for an imposed settlement and of course, links the Israel problem with al-Qaeda, even though the Arabs waged genocidal jihad on Israel before al-Qaeda was even in existence. Here are a few lovely ideas contained in this document. First it mentions that America’s pro-Israel community might be a tad upset, but that an American president ought to be able to perform the massive con job needed to convince most Americans why this is so vital, and why vast amounts of taxpayer dollars need to be spent…

Unbelievable watching this grow.

So to recap…

Uh huh. That’s what the report says.

From the article:

Wow, biology fail.

That’s how the species got into the lake. When freed of space constraints, goldfish will continue to grow their entire lives, which can last 20 years or more. So a foot-long goldfish is entirely possible if it has enough space and food.
