John Oliver: Just f*cking ignore Sarah Palin’s turd supermarket of self-contradictory nonsense

“I just don’t even know where to begin with her,” he said. “I mean — hold on. I think I’ve just realized something. Fuck it, this is exactly what she wants. Just because I walked into a turd supermarket doesn’t mean I have to buy anything.”

Though Oliver could mock Palin in the typical Daily Show-esque fashion by mashing up clips of the conservative commentator contradicting her own “nonsense,” the more prudent move was to “just fucking ignore her.”

“I promise America it will feel so good,” he remarked. “It will be like we give our brains an enema together.”

over at Balloon Juice, they refer to those people as “the poniless”. Everytone else got thios cool new black President, but they didn’t get THEIR pony. Because despite all of things that the man has helped manage through the sausage machine ( and kudos to Nancy Smash for her huge assistance), because he didn’t put the Bushies in jail and didn’t get single payer and didn’t repeal DOMA or any other number of pet issues he’s just as bad as the Texas Asshat. Still marvel at what might get done if the Dems can finally find their balls and defeat those gerrymandered R’s out of the house. That supposes that Harry Reid tired of the bullshit and does some rules modification to prevent the casual abuses currently employed by the Minority Party in Power. Still, footwork has to be done and the media is ripe to finally be ignored and we have this wonderful track record of what the House has done, so maybe it’s doable, certainly worth working for.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. There’s a couple of old stories back in the news this morning. The FBI and NYPD are digging up the driveway, backyard, and basement of notorious mass murderer Sirius Black mobster Jimmy the Gent Burke.

If his name doesn’t quite sound familiar, maybe you’re more familiar with his movie persona - Jimmy Conway from Goodfellas. The FBI and NYPD are following up on a lead about whether Burke buried human remains or some of the famous $5m Lufthansa heist (the biggest heist in US history to that point). Nearly all of that was never recovered.

Halfway across the country, law enforcement is digging up a Michigan field looking for another Jimmy. Jimmy Hoffa. That’s based on a credible source.

I didn’t much care for Reagan, especially after he basically evicted all the mentally ill people who were just too expensive to care for, but he did appear to have some desire to do something for the country, and he didn’t seem to me to be crazy (we’ll leave off the last couple of years of his presidency when he was starting to slip into Alzheimer’s). And while we were talking about how minimum wage earner gets ripped off by being paid in a debit card that charges a fee every time it’s used, here is what Teh Dumbest Man on Teh Internets is Derping about today:

And then there’s this (wrongly, IMHO, named article) about Guitar Center (bought by Bain Capital in 2007):

Workers at Guitar Center make the legal minimum wage plus commission, but they aren’t paid that commission until they sell a certain amount of product against their base pay.

“Where that becomes an issue is during slower months, like this month for example, or if a sales person has a bad month, which everyone eventually does, sometimes you don’t sell enough product and you ultimately don’t make enough money for the company to cover minimum wage, even though you’ve worked full-time and you’ve showed up to work on time and did your job to its fullest, you’re making minimum wage that month,” he says.

That’s problematic for a number of reasons. All the money workers make in heavily trafficked months, they hang onto in preparation for months ahead. There’s never a consistent pay check. They’re never fully sure what they receive in pay is going to cover their bills because minimum wage in New York City is extremely low.

“We’re in this grey area where we have solid jobs, which are hard to get in New York and we have benefits, but at the same time, we’re not making enough money to survive, and a lot of us end up selling our instruments to make rent and living off of credit cards.”

And the problem isn’t just in New York.

“There were many weeks where I only ate one meal a day, sometimes none, due to low wages,” said another Guitar Center employee in a southern state who asked to remain anonymous out of concern for their job. “Some brands pay more than others. Successful sales people sell what makes money, not what is truly needed.”

Her medical issues were a result from a fall, IIRC. That shouldn’t have anything to do with her running or not.

Whoever is the Dem candidate, they get my vote. Across the board. We see what the GOP has in store for America, for American women (and by extension of policies they implement, women around the world), for those not at the top of the financial ladder, for the middle class, etc., etc., etc. ad nauseum.

There is no reason to ever vote for a Republican, ever. No matter how pretty their words sound, they are a collective, like the Borg. Once they get to Washington, they vote as a block for shit that serves no one but rich white men (and the occasional rich white woman or rich person of color…but only peripherally).

Sometimes your friends aren’t really helping.

E.g.:

Explaining the Global Warming Hiatus

Grappling with climate-change nuance in a toxic political environment

The subtitle looks promising. Let’s check out the first paragraph:

Even as scientists asserted an incontrovertible consensus on climate change, a funny thing has happened over the last 15 years: Global warming has slowed down. Since 1998, the warmest year of the twentieth century, temperatures have not kept up with computer models that seemed to project steady warming; they’re perilously close to falling beneath even the lowest projections.

Good grief.

1) “computer models that seemed to project steady warming” - NO. No, they did not project “steady” warming. The dude has confused first of all smoothed (multi-model runs) surface temperature with “warming”. This is a common set of misunderstandings.

The author may mean well, but once you’ve led the reader down the path of wrong thinking it is hard to recover.

This confusion between SURFACE temperature and the entire climate system isn’t helped by his later several paragraphs of trying to explain that indeed the Earth is more complex than a single graph can convey.

The meaning, denotation, of “esoteric” is “intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest “. Climatology like all other modern sciences are indeed esoteric. Science writers struggle with communicating these subjects to the laity and compromises have to be made, but in this particular case the tradeoffs were not a particularly good one.

The hardest thing to explain about climate change is what is meant by “climate”. Simply saying it is the long term average of “weather”, though not totally inaccurate, is misleading. Because to most people “weather” consists of (1) what’s the temp outside, and (2) is it raining. But those two questions don’t do your physical environment justice, because the physical environment is too complex to be explained by those two questions.

While I believe the global inaction on climate change has much more to do with the short-horizon nature of human decision making (which manifests itself in all of human decisions) - we really have a short temporal horizon - than it has to do with the lack of understanding climatology (or physical science in general), I do believe increasing the awareness of people to their physical environment may lead some to make wiser decisions.

[continued]

67 freetoken  Tue, Jun 18, 2013 6:40:12am

[continued]

The article also demonstrates how the laity does not really understand the scientific establishment or why science as a field of human endeavor has succeeded as well as it has:

In the end, the so-called scientific consensus on global warming doesn’t look like much like consensus when scientists are struggling to explain the intricacies of the earth’s climate system, or uttering the word “uncertainty” with striking regularity. Nowhere is there more uncertainty than in the clouds. “It’s like cancer,” Herd said, referring to the “many, many problems” posed by the many kinds of clouds, each with their own special properties that might reflect or trap more or less of the sun’s heat. Some progress has been made on clouds, especially with cirrus clouds.

If any scientist presents her findings to me and does not spend a significant amount of time discussing measurement uncertainties then I would cast doubt on how well they’ve analyzed their results. It’s part of the territory - it’s what it means to do empirical science.

And, btw, this hyperventilating over clouds is a misdirection. There have been clouds since the Earth has had an atmosphere, and in the big picture of the Pleistocene the changes in temperature were not driven by clouds nor did the ice not advance, or retreat.

The State of Our Nation’s Bridges

Despite billions of dollars in federal, state and local funds directed toward the maintenance of existing bridges, 68,842 bridges — 11.5 percent of total highway bridges in the U.S. — are classified as “structurally deficient,” requiring significant maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement.

Two key problems persist: while Congress has repeatedly declared bridge safety a national priority, existing federal programs don’t ensure that aging bridges actually get fixed; and the current level of investment is nowhere near what is needed to keep up with our rapidly growing backlog of aging bridges.

Not to mention, you have a greedy bazillionaire who owns a Bridge all by himself, and spends $$$millions$$$ to PREVENT BUILDING ANOTHER BRIDGE because wants to keep the Bridge Monopoly all to himself.

Oh and he doesn’t put a dime into repairs and maintenance on HIS PERSONALLY OWNED BRIDGE preferring to spend it all on propaganda.

According to a puritopian of my acquintance my volunteering for Elizabeth Warren and my work on the (failed) legislation helping independent workers not get screwed over by employers were just ‘cover’, because I obviously have an agenda to sap the progressive movement of its energy through casting doubt on the heroic Snowden.

What is interesting about this exchange was that he basically said it was fine for him to (I feel rather baselessly) speculate on my motives, but me speculating on Snowden’s motives was petty and foul.

Meanwhile, on the ‘other’ side, a ‘libertarian’ (really GOP) friend of mine sent me a smug email about how at least Bush was open about being authoritarian. Authoritarian. He’s now basically just using it to mean ‘any kind of law that I decide is too restrictive’. The FISC court getting a subpoena reviewed by a federal judge in accordance with a law passed by an overwhelming majority of reps and senators who were and continue to be elected in open elections is ‘authoritarian’.

Yup. Gas taxes aren’t keeping up with higher fuel economy and lower consumption, and other sources aren’t filling the gap either. State taxes aren’t keeping up with infrastructure needs either.

The ARRA of 2009 did help close the gap to some degree, but that was a one-shot, and the nation needs a long term sustained investment in infrastructure and not just highways and bridges. There’s a ton of infrastructure needs that needs replacement - anything from when the Interstate Highway System was built out in the 1950s and meeting the end of its functional life to bridges and systems built at the end of the 1800s.

There’s also sewage systems that need modernization and upgrades, water delivery systems that need upgrades, and a power grid that need to be far more robust to handle natural disasters of all flavors.

It takes money, and the cost cutting GOP pays lip service to infrastructure all while they continue cutting the very programs that sustain infrastructure over the long term.

Sadly, the Free Market GOP doesn’t seem to get that Market’s can’t survive if farmers/manufacturers don’t have infrastructure to get their goods to said market. Perhaps they just want to outsource the construction and have privateers charge tolls on each bridge to recoup their costs.

There’s also no market when people cannot afford to purchase. A far reaching middle class with no money to burn cannot sustain the US economy. We can buy a bunch of cheap shit from China, but that doesn’t do much for the American economy.

Collections of large amounts of cash in the upper echelons of US society does nothing for the US as a whole. The memes of makers and takers are pointless because, even assuming you by into the whole taker bullshit, they still spend. And spending is what an economy is all about.

Citigroup’s plutonomy memos

We project that the plutonomies (the U.S., UK, and Canada) will likely see even more income inequality, disproportionately feeding off a further rise in the profit share in their economies, capitalist-friendly governments, more technology-driven productivity, and globalization… Since we think the plutonomy is here, is going to get stronger… It is a good time to switch out of stocks that sell to the masses and back to the plutonomy basket.

Just to clarify, Christian Nation isn’t a Beck book, it’s by Frederic C. Rich.

From Amazon:

“They said what they would do, and we did not listen. Then they did what they said they would do.”

So ends the first chapter of this brilliantly readable counterfactual novel, reminding us that America’s Christian fundamentalists have been consistently clear about their vision for a “Christian Nation” and dead serious about acquiring the political power to achieve it. When President McCain dies and Sarah Palin becomes president, the reader, along with the nation, stumbles down a terrifyingly credible path toward theocracy, realizing too late that the Christian right meant precisely what it said.

In the spirit of Philip Roth’s The Plot Against America, one of America’s foremost lawyers lays out in chilling detail what such a future might look like: constitutional protections dismantled; all aspects of life dominated by an authoritarian law called “The Blessing,” enforced by a totally integrated digital world known as the “Purity Web.” Readers will find themselves haunted by the questions the narrator struggles to answer in this fictional memoir: “What happened, why did it happen, how could it have happened?”

Slave owners fed, housed and clothed their little slavelings.

Speaking of which - here on Long Island, DoJ and Homeland Security raided 14 7-11 stores and arrested the owners on charges of human trafficking and ID theft.

More than a dozen 7-Eleven franchises took in more than $180 million in revenue by running a “modern-day plantation system,” prosecutors in New York charged on Monday, built on the unpaid labor of dozens of illegal immigrants hired using sham Social Security numbers.

Through the scheme, the defendants, who as franchisees for the parent company were licensed to use 7-Eleven buildings, trademarks and Slurpee and hot dog machines, recruited more than 50 illegal immigrants and gave them identities stolen from American citizens, including children and dead people.

The employees worked for 100 hours a week but were paid for a fraction of that time, and were forced to live in substandard housing owned by the operators of the convenience stores, the authorities said.

The 7-11 around the corner from my house was among the stores that were seized. I’d always thought that something was weird, because the whole crew that worked at the store lived in a house directly across the street, and I’d go into the store in the morning and then late at night, and the same guys would be behind the registers.

Those owners are in a world of hurt, as they should be. And I’m assuming the counter staff is already on their way back to Pakistan.

It kind of sucks to think I’ve been tacitly supporting human trafficking for the past ten years.

Scientists: Timber at possible Griffin shipwreck site has been in Lake Michigan for centuries

FAIRPORT, Mich. - Scientists say a wooden beam extending from the floor of northern Lake Michigan appears to have been there for centuries, an important finding as they try to determine whether it’s part of the Griffin, the first European-style ship to sail on North America’s upper Great Lakes.

Marine archaeologists from the U.S. and France are studying the timber and digging a pit beneath it. They said Tuesday a probing device has detected what appears to be a solid surface up to 20 feet (6 metres) below the lake floor.

They say they’re not certain they’re dealing with a shipwreck. But Michel L’Hour of France’s Department of Underwater Archaeological Research says the timber appears to be a bowsprit, a pole that extends from a vessel’s stem.

The Griffin disappeared in 1679.

Huh. The original observation, questionable as it is, was of a 32 week FEMALE fetus.

Any media reports on masturbation by fetuses can almost exclusively be traced back to a single letter written by two OB/GYNs in Italy in 1996 and published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The letter related an anecdote in which the two doctors had “recently observed a female fetus at 32 weeks gestation touching the vulva with the fingers of the right hand” before the female fetus experienced prolonged spasms, and “finally…relaxed and rested.”

I think many are honestly surprised when they are accused of rape.

Alcohol doesn’t absolve one of responsibility tho.

Yunno, there was this odd and outdated tradition of “courtship” that was practiced in rural parts of the USA well into the 2nd half of the XXth century: it involved giving the male partner a chance to demonstrate that he could be a gentleman and respect a lady’s wishes in all situations, even compromising ones…

re: #266 FemNaziBitch

Booze and drugs lower inhibitions which naturally is related to questionable judgements and impaired decision making. I agree, it doesn’t absolve one of one’s actions but that does play both ways, I can see where two people get buzzed and/or blitzed and wake up in each others arms and then instant regret/remorse sets in or at least leaves room for doubt. Those are always hard to unravel imho.

and let me clarify… that just because the woman has a couple of drinks doesn’t mean that she’s asking for it…. just saying that I’ve seen a few ladies under the influence of alcohol do things and/or people that I would rarely see them consider doing while sober.

Man, this 1000x. It’s not just DKos. It’s Crooks and Liars (which I left years ago because they’re fucking crazy. One of their now editors would write something one day and then write something diametrically opposite in a matter of days [or sometimes hours!] I felt I was the only one who noticed the complete craziness. Even after bringing it to their attention, it was like, Hey, no biggie. So I just left.), AmericaBlog and many other lefty sites I used to peruse. Leftists used to be about facts and reality, not hysterical bullshit.

They have all been Hamsher’d. They are nothing but hysterical bullshit purists who have no fucking idea how government works (and should work!), but have ideals which they think should govern governance.

There is a vast difference between what is ideal and what is achievable. There seems to be an extreme lack of realism in far too many people and their ability to understand the difference between reality and EVERYONE GETS A PONY THAT FARTS RAINBOWS. Reality is completely absent.

I, like you apparently, follow sanity, wherever that road may go.

If you start a Tweet with an address WITHOUT the period (or sometimes a quotation mark, or another character) it will only go to that person’s timeline and followers of yours who also follow that account. With the period, it goes to all of your followers.

not disagreeing with you Sol, the hookup culture has demonstrated that yes, there are some definitive drawbacks to the dating culture as it exists today, but just because you courted someone doesn’t mean that men haven’t been raping women since the introduction of the apple. Men and women have been going at each other like rabid bandicoots for centuries, what is changing is that in our culture the lines determining those gender roles is getting blurred faster than we can draw those lines in the sand. So what I’m trying to sayi is that booze and drugs end up blurring lines in some cases making it easier for those inclined to take advantage ( for either sex) as well as in some cases for mutual bad judgement to hold sway. Still, that being said, I feel that my gender has a long way to go yet.

Human sexual interaction is much too complex a subject to sum up in one post. And altogether too easy to take a phrase out of context and blow it up as condoning or trivializing rape.

But a lot of what we called “courtship” was about allowing interaction between the sexes while still protecting women from rape, whether for their own dignity or to protect their value as family “property”.

I am in favor of sexual freedom over repression and segregation of sexes, but freedom also means responsibility - on the part of both sexes.

It’s bad.

[…]

In the interim, another servicewoman, Staff Sgt. Jennifer Robinson, had come forward to accuse Capt. Herrera of sexual assault. In her case, the incident had occurred in his bedroom, where she voluntarily accompanied him. The court-martial acquitted him of that charge on the ground that she had consented. (Sgt. Robinson, who has since been promoted to technical sergeant, revealed her identity in a March interview with the Air Force Times.)

It’s fair to say that Capt. Herrera seems to have a tendency toward sexual recklessness. Perhaps that makes him unsuitable to serve as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. But his accusers acted recklessly too. The presumption that reckless men are criminals while reckless women are victims makes a mockery of any notion that the sexes are equal.

It is all part of an internal party debate.

Nobody outside the GOP buys that line of bullshit, but the argument is whether or not to embrace blacks and other minorities.

The implied argument here is that blacks are incapable of acting in their own interests, they are too beholden to the party of “free stuff”, so there is no point in trying to appeal to them at all in the first place.

Immigration Activists Mob Kansas Secretary of State’s Home

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is calling for a criminal investigation after a huge mob of illegal alien supporters surrounded his private home Saturday and held a rally on his front porch.

The secretary of state is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment - and he said the incident at his home is an example of why Americans should bear arms. “If we had been in the home and not been armed, I would have felt very afraid - because it took the police 15 minutes to show up,” he said. “It’s important we recognize there’s a reason we have the Second Amendment. There are situations like this where you have a mob and you do need to be able to protect yourself.”

Rep. Blackburn On Abortion Bill: ‘Science Is On Our Side

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) defended legislation Tuesday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, saying that “science is on our side and public opinion is on our side.”

The legislation is slated to be voted on Tuesday and is expected to pass the GOP-controlled House, but fail in the Senate.

“We are incredibly concerned about the well-being, safety, the health of these women. The life of women. And these babies. That is why we are doing this,” Blackburn said in an interview with Craig Melvin on MSNBC. “The trial of Kermit Gosnell, the information that has subsequently come from other state, public opinion said something needs to be done about this. So you know, Craig, this is one of those issues where science is on our side and public opinion is on our side.”

No and no.

Science is fine when selectively applied to support their point of view.

Everything else is “lies from the pit of hell”.

It’s been so totally forgotten that many members of that Party would go back and unfound it if they could.

I totally stole that (and tweeted it). Good job!!

Also, too: less government. Get the government off our backs. Don’t let government come between critical doctor-patient relationship.

It’s fitting that today’s GOP spokespeople have to go back to 1860 for inspiration.

Tweeted that! (I’d copy it but I’m on my phone.)

re: #389 Lidane

On behalf of men everywhere, I apologize for Mr. Taranto. Seriously dude calling out sexual assaults isn’t a war on men. Hell if anything enabling men do get away with that kind of crap is worse for men than just dismissing this as a war on men. Why because it gives the wrong impression that men don’t give a shit about violence against women. Maybe Mr. Taranto doesn’t but this man does.

The thing about Blackburn and this abortion bill is that it’s not even HER BILL! She just replaced Trent Franks (the latest victim of foot-in-mouth disease), who was in the news last week for going down the very clearly marked as dangerous for Republicans path of “Rape rarely results in pregnancy”, aka “Women’s bodies have ways of shutting that down”.
