What a day of footballing in America. That return of a field goal by Auburn was one for history. So unexpected.

And as a bit of an Ohio State fan (I’m not a graduate and I don’t live for a game) it sure made a great day of arch rivals taking it to one another.

(Hat tip to Big Blue…you guys had Ohio States defensive off balance all day long)

That’s nothing; try being either a Titans (currently 5-6 and a AFC wild card long shot) or Vols (currently 4-7 and out of bowl contention) fans right now.

Now, I’m not a Vols fan myself, but as far as college football goes in TN goes, it’s got a lot of history and is a big draw statewide; it’s still as close as a state religion as we have.

It was, I would have ran a normal play and tried to end it in over time. Anyone who knows their football knows 50+ yard field goals aren’t too common and 55+ yard FGs even less so.

The decision is even more perplexing considering Alabama hadn’t shown much kicking skill all game.

The guy was still a better kicker than most college FG kickers. If it had been 7-8 yards less it would have over the bar and it had no hook at all.

Monday we are driving back to Detroit. The drive down took longer than I thought it would. Srsly what was I thinking? It’s straight down the middle of the USA, why would I think that it would take less time to drive than to New York?

Apparently, Europe buys into conspiracy theories too.

Two German students have vandalised part of the Pyramid of Khufu to help ‘prove’ their Lost Civilisation theory

Supporters of the popular story that the Pyramids are evidence of a lost civilisation from the dawn of time consider the reaction all part of an ancient conspiracy.

I’m really ticked at these scumbags for causing damage to a historical object from antiquity that is under constant study.

I hope Germany decides to extradite these Clown to Egypt to be tried and punished. Otherwise, it’ll be another entry into how the German Government is hypocritical beyond belief.

Been listening real close haven’t you?!

There’s all kinds of flubs in some of his stuff, but that looseness is also what made him…him.

I always liked Joe Walsh for some of the same. I particularly liked his rather loopy rhythms that had some off timing…and he too could get loose with his leads.

It’s only rock ‘n’ roll…and part of all that is what gives it charm. And, makes ordinary hacks like me think “I can do that.” Well, not really…there are a lot of little things to remember if you do try to do Page note for note.

I’ve been listening to JP since ‘69 and I’m well acquainted with his sloppiness. He was my guitar hero during the ’70s and I unconsciously adopted a lot of his techniques (so I’ve been told)

Been listening real close haven’t you?!

There’s all kinds of flubs in some of his stuff, but that looseness is also what made him…him.

Ever since I spent the night at my buddy’s house in 7th grade and we listened to Song Remains the Same. Three times in a row.

At times he can make me cringe a little, then will save it. But he also did The Rain Song, quite possibly the most romantic thing ever played on a guitar.

I’m watching the Celebration Day concert. Getting some good goosebumps too.

lol

Same weak logic was used by Thatcher and Reagan to support South African apartheid in the 1980s. “How can we support the poor and oppressed blacks if we boycott the industries which employ some of them?”

Simple, the boycott eventually hurts the company (or nation) enough that they make concessions. Otherwise there’s no incentive for those corporations taking advantage of others to change their practices.

It’s the exact same calculus used whenever a nation (or group of nations) imposes economic sanctions against a government that threatens others or abuses its own people (Iran, Iraq, NKorea, for example).

Well, they should speed up the process for everyone. And I see no reason to punish those who came here to work, and stayed to work more, and paid taxes and fees and contributed a hell of a lot to this country. They deserve every break we can give them. Did you know that some immigrants have served in the military, got an honorable discharge, got deported over a traffic ticket. and will be allowed back when they are dead so they can be buried here? I’d have to disagree that Obama’s done nothing good on immigration. He encouraged the Senate to pass the bill they did, he supported it all along, praised members of both parties (including Rubio, who made a good faith effort at the time), and them promised to sign it.

OTOH, two-thirds of the Senate Republicans (as opposed to zero of their Dem counterparts) voted AGAINST the bill. And the House is even more anti-immigration; they won’t even consider comprehensive reform. Failure to pass immigration reform is on the GOP, not Obama.

Yeah, my blame goes to the Republicans. I don’t know what Obama could have done differently, except to do immigration first and health care second, which would mean health care never would have happened. That was the tougher battle, I think. And I wouldn’t change the priority between those two issues, although I say that from the privileged position of a native born white person, and the self-interested position of a person without health insurance.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Hobby Lobby and other companies aren’t being forced to pay for anyone’s birth control. Same for individual taxpayers, we’re not being forced to pay for others’ BC.

Rather the insurance companies will simply provide BC at very low generic prices for all patients. Then the insurers will “eat” the cost because that approach is more cost-effective long term for them anyway.

It may seem like a fine distinction. But it’s not really. Hobby Lobby isn’t paying extra. What they object to is any of their employees even having insurance that covers BC. And what they want is to be able to provide coverage that specifically excludes any coverage of birth control/family planning, regardless of who pays for it.

Why do people like Doug give a shit about every phrase allegedly spoken by every founder? Only a simpleton would think, “Oh, if Washington said it, it must be true forever and under all circumstances.”

BTW, Washington also said things like, “I will purchase that slave for $300 and make him/her work on my plantation until he/she dies. But I won’t have sex with the slave, probably, I’ll leave that to Jefferson.”

These were just men—albeit great men—but deeply flawed like all others. Hanging on their every word stunts intellectual growth.

Sources close to Paul tell us he was in Santa Clarita for a car show to support the Philippines typhoon relief effort, and had been taking friends out for rides in his new Porsche GT. The accident happened during one of those test spins.

A rep for Paul confirms he was leaving the charity event at the time of the wreck.

Therefore, Paul Walker was clearly murdered to distract the public from the troof about BENGHAZI!!!!111

Paul Walker was in that movie where Jessica Alba swims all over the place in a bikini.

So….you’ve got this car. Heard it was fast.

Too fast, very sad.

Yes, and the ‘e’ is pronounced.

Into the Blue.

That sounds bad enough to be fun. Might have to download it. Rest in the light, Mr. Walker.

Well, all I know is my tree is up. I will rest my eyes on it for relief.

His movies will see an uptick in showings on TV and downloads, to be sure.

Paul Walker was a good man by all accounts and the world is poorer for having lost him.

This shouldn’t have to be said, but it does:

When so many celebrities are embroiled in feuds, controversies, scandals, marriages, divorces, sex tapes, and the spotlight, I only saw him on a movie screen. I guess that’s a good thing.

Reports I hears was that Walker was returning from a fundraiser for the Phillipines typhoon.

Ack.

Have you seen “The Five(ish) Doctors”?

bbc.co.uk

Written and directed by Peter Davison, starring him, Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker… cameos by lots of the whoniverse…

I enjoyed it as much (maybe even a little more) than the actual Day of the Doctor episode.

re: #295 gwangung

Walker was a passenger in a friend’s car and both were attending a charity event for his organization, Reach Out Worldwide, in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles north of Hollywood.

The website for the charity said the Saturday event was intended to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

This is more depressing the more I hear about it (apparently PA isn’t the only one with ties to him; some pals were work associates of his…).

Re: Michael Hastings/Paul Walker conspiracy theories

I can understand many reasons for wanting an investigative journalist dead, but what good reason could there be for wanting an actor dead?

Re: Michael Hastings/Paul Walker conspiracy theories

I can understand many reasons for wanting an investigative journalist dead, but what good reason could there be for wanting an actor dead?

Because the conspiracist wants to see a pattern wherein all roads like back to whatever it is they think is the conspiracy. It’s worldview reinforcement, like the fake quotes many wingnuts post.

I did see it and enjoy it.

However, I still enjoyed the Day of the Doctor more.
