WASHINGTON — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) denied any involvement in a political payback scheme carried out by some of his top aides on Wednesday, saying the whole thing was “inappropriate and unsanctioned.”“What I’ve seen today for the first time is unacceptable,” said Christie in a statement. “I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge.”

The fact that he did nothing earlier like what you suggest tells me he had the closures done, thought it was funny then and thought he could blow by it all. Now he has found himself trapped and he is not going to go down easily. He may have known a real investigation was going to be a problem.

I’m still hesitant to say he knew what was going on, I could see scenarios where those in his office were operating without his knowledge. But that’s more damning, in my mind, because it invokes in one’s mind images of Iran-Contra, of an administration that had truly bad shit going on with the head honcho purposefully left out of the loop to afford him plausible deniability.

The FWST does journalism? What?
Ft. Worth Star-Telegram apologizes for Obamacare story
“The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram’s executive editor apologized to readers this week for a story it published in November about the trouble people were having getting affordable insurance under the Affordable Care Act.
“In a column teased on Monday’s front page, Jim Witt said the reporter and editor of the story did not do their due diligence to discover the background of the people profiled in the story, some of whom turned out to have tea party connections and were actually able to obtain more affordable coverage through Obamacare.
“Knowing the background of the person quoted can give readers important clues about someone’s motives, but you didn’t learn that from reading our story, because we neglected to investigate the background of the people we quoted. That’s something you learn to do in Journalism 101. I remember my old professor saying, ‘If your mother says she loves you … check it out,’” Witt wrote. “

MRAP. Coming to a police department near you.
Since the military is now blowing off excess armored vehicles for as little as $2000 police departments are buying in. Makes some people nervous, why would a city way down the violent crime list need one? Answer-They actually don’t. It is pointed out that a special armored SWAT vehicle is $100,000 or more new. I gotta wonder why a special vehicle is needed at all. I see these armored vans and trucks that Brinks uses. Good enough for tens of millions in diamonds or gems, bit inadequate to a SWAT team?
So what if I was a big truck fan. as a civilian could I buy an MRAP truck with the turret? Heck of a storm chasing vehicle. But I think there is a law against re selling armored vehicles except for police. LAPD had a Bradley, used it a little with a big battering ram. It’s now kept in a police museum.
So what is a little town like Banning California going to do with an MRAP? Might be cheap to buy but expensive to run. And a little unnerving to those who would like police departments to equip like police, not the army. Any little accident in traffic would be far worse. At least for the poor guy that thing runs into or over.

Yeah, that’s a tough one.
Personally, I’m leaning towards Christie letting it be known that Fort Lee needed to be taught a lesson; verbally and not in writing. That way, even if someone tries to implicate Christie, he can go with the whole “I never explicitly said to punish the mayor and Fort Lee.”
That then moves on to Christie’s appointees, drunk on power and the hubris of the upcoming landslide victory, figuring they can do anything they fucking well please.
Funny how this stuff spirals out of control when your ego gets the best of you.

Well, you sure as hell can’t buy an armored van for $2000.

GWB lane closures delayed EMS response to 4 calls in Fort Lee
Wednesday January 8, 2014, 5:00 PM
FORT LEE - Emergency responders were delayed in attending to four medical situations - including one in which a 91-year-old woman lay unconscious - due to traffic gridlock caused by unannounced closures of access lanes to the George Washington Bridge, according to the head of the borough’s EMS department.
The woman later died, borough records show.
In at least two of those instances, response time doubled, noted EMS coordinator Paul Favia, who documented those cases in a Sept. 10 letter to Mayor Mark Sokolich, which The Record obtained…

Any little accident in traffic would be far worse.
And it looks like one of those little accidents was how the city found out its police chief bought the thing.
“I don’t think the city needs it and I don’t like the way it was acquired,” Council Member Don Peterson, who learned of the acquisition after the Sept. 16 crash in Arizona, said in a phone interview Dec. 17.
[….]
The Banning police MRAP sustained a tire blowout and crashed into a pickup on Interstate 10 west of Phoenix, which has resulted in a claim of more than $42,000 against the City of Banning.

1) You will kindly note I did not say that. However, it is an entirely sufficient argument.
2) It’s not worth the time and bureaucratic headache to determine how much they are worth, between this newish one here and that dinged up one over there, the military doesn’t want the damned things anyway, people cost money, and they just want the fucking things gone. I’m half surprised they aren’t selling them for a cent apiece.

I think it’s a bad idea with a very poor rationale. Short term thinking. By both the military and the police. They should be mothballed until needed or scrapped. or if sold, how about to the national guard? Or an allied military?

My dad used to be a corrections officer at at the Riverside county minimum security prison in banning. He told me Banning PD used to rough up prisoners en route and try to get them to resist in order to justify use of force incidents where they could do a beat down on the guys. The corrections officers would then have to deal with a beat up and very angry inmate who may need medical attention before being processed in. They were not particularly amused.

Don’t Let Congress Meddle in Key Nutrition Program for Women and Kids
WIC is a national nutrition program designed to support the nutrition and health of low-income mothers and young children. In the 40 years since the WIC program began, Congress has never interfered with selecting which foods the program should provide. Instead, Congress has delegated the determination of WIC foods to experts in nutrition science and medicine.
But without your help, that could change. Potato industry lobbyists are urging Congress to circumvent the scientific review process and add language to the Farm Bill or Agriculture spending bill that would weaken the WIC food packages by requiring the inclusion of white potatoes.[…]
Potatoes have the same glycemic impact as white sugar.

Lawhawk hit that earlier. Christie’s one of the “loyal to a fault” types.
Personally, I want to see Bridget Anne Kelly, author of the “Time for some traffic” comment arrested. Yesterday.
Loyal to a fault and then some. He didn’t so much as give a slap on the wrist to anyone at NJ Transit responsible for the Sandy flooding fiasco that left the rail fleet in shambles for weeks (though he did attempt to tie it all on a lower tier employee who he then claimed was protected by civil service - even though he wasn’t).
Christie let both Wildstein and Baroni to resign/retire, rather than fire them.
Kelly ought to be brought up on charges along with Wildstein. And the families of those whose emergency response was delayed, and with one of the women dying thereafter, may also have a cause of action against them, though I’m sure the Port Authority and them individually will claim that they have immunity from those kinds of suits.

Texas man selling restaurant to save uninsured employee suffering from a brain tumor
Brittany Mathis, 19, told KHOU that she discovered a rash on her leg and the hospital determined that it was blood clotting.
“So, they wanted to keep me and do CAT scans and MRIs and the next day they came in and told me I had a tumor,” she recalled.
Brittany and her mother, Barbara, are both waitresses at Kaiserhof Restaurant in Montgomery. Neither of them have insurance, and the medical bills have been mounting over the past months.
So, restaurant owner Michael De Beyer is hoping that someone will buy his restaurant in time for him to help the 19-year-old girl.
“I just can’t be standing by and doing nothing,” De Beyer said. “I have to try something because it’s not right.”
“Here’s a family, they really work hard they have a lot of stuff against them in the past and they are not holding their hand open they didn’t even ask anybody for help.”

Exactly. And not enough access or information to produce and lean meat products. Aside from the fact that many also frequent fast food joints for quick meals while working (and never buy the salads anyway). Lots of fats and sugar in poor people diets. You get used to a certain taste and mouth feel, and don’t change. Not only that, but dense calories with little fiber lead to digestive and colon problems.

Well we got some snow here in southern Idaho this morning and the temp at this time is 39F and starting to drop. The roads are all wet from the melting snow and we are expecting about 1 to 3 inches in the morning.
Glad I don’t have to go out tomorrow as we will have black ice by midnight that will then be covered by snow. Not the best driving conditions if I may say so.

Because everybody is willing and able to sell their own livlihood to save an employee…
Funny how Texas has the lion’s share of uninsured people who would have qualified for medicaid.
Well, they wouldn’t want them to be dependent on Government. They should just die, instead.

I have a theory on that show. The first season was twisted so they decided to see how far they could go in the second season (even more twisted) this current season is pushing it even further. I. Love. It.

Christie’s excuse makes him look incompetent. You’re in charge of an entire state and yet you aren’t even paying attention to what those employees CLOSEST to you are doing?
Fail.

Hmmmm. Good point. So much - possibly ALL - of modern Conservatism is built around “pissing off/scaring Liberals/Democrats” that a bunch of (mostly) Democrats pissed off at sitting in traffic because their mayor didn’t toe the line might just get them to like him.

Yeah, he seems to be stuck in a lose-lose situation here. If he disavows all knowledge, he looks incompetent; if he admits he knew about it, he torpedoes any plausible deniability and opens himself to liability.

Indeed. I know that when I cast my vote, a candidate having acted with malice and/or having a record of hiring thugs and not having them on a short leash are real positives. ////

so here’s a bit of genius for ya. Prior to christmas my brother in law caught a jumping spider and my nephews had it in a bag with some air holes and bugs and they brought it over to my place. I went to the store, bought a critter cage and some sand, water dish and some baby crickets.
They kept the spider alive and it was doing well in its new home. Then my brother in law caught a black widow and decided to put it in with the jumping spider. Now they have a critter cage and 2 dead spiders.

By that logic, neither is Obama.
