Reposting from downstairs because I caught the tail end of a thread (as usual).
Hey, check this out, you guys: I just got around to reading today’s Google Alerts and Charles got a shout out in an article over at the SPLC. Cool, huh?
See what happens when you’re irrelevant. //
Less than a week after the killings in Charleston, S.C., Amazon, Walmart and eBay banned the sale of items bearing the symbol, also known as the “Southern Cross.” Conservative Southern politicians who had never said a critical word about the flag, along with many who had defended it as a legitimate and non-racist symbol of Southern heritage, came out against it. Writers like Charles Johnson of the Little Green Footballs blog penned thoughtful essays about why it should finally come down. On July 5, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley ordered a variety of Confederate flags removed from the statehouse grounds. And on July 8, encouraged by conservative Gov. Nikki Haley, the South Carolina legislature passed a law that mandated the removal of the battle flag. […]

Kasich, Rubio, Paul, Christie, Cruz, all come away from the debate looking a little better than yesterday in the polls. Trump is Trump, a fucking blowhard. Carson will slip rather drastically in the polls. Jeb! is finished. Fiorina is finished. Huckabee is finished.

I generally order 3-4 (depending on number of guests at dinner) and then ask them to surprise me with the colors/flavors selected. There are normally 5-6 different types there.
And we often end up halving or quartering them so that more people can try the different flavors.

Agreed, except I wasn’t impressed with Paul or Christie — I would put them in the “finished” category.
(I’m still catching up, so if either of them has a good moment, I may revise.)

Agree on all but Fiorina.
Notice that the biggest cheers of the night from Boulder’s only conservatives (seriously, you could fit every Boulderite who calls themselves conservative in that one room) was when Rubio and Cruz whined about the media.

For people who want to run a country there was an awful lot of kvetching, whining and complaining. They were all like Goldilocks with something to bitch about.
I’m pretty sure Carson was the only candidate that brought up “political correctness.”

Considering the news about his campaign’s finances, I think Jeb? was hoping to hold out til at least Iowa, with the expectation that a good showing there would buoy his campaign and make investors reconsider their abandonment of him. But after tonight, I’m not sure he’s gonna be able to keep things together til January.

I’m torn between the satisfaction of knowing Christie won’t get to the White House, and the depression/nausea from realizing he’s coming back here to continue running NJ into the ground.
Jeb* will hold on ‘til January out of sheer spite, have a poor showing in Iowa, and then disappear.

Yeah. CNBC is so liberal. All pre-debate those liberal CNBCers discussed how republican the youth of CO are and the conservatives know how important U of C is to reaching young people who are already 5 out of 9 republican. Uh huh. Totally liberal.
The story became about CBS…and it ended a giant in journalism.
This is rather awkward…for reasons.
Rubio bitching about the “mainstream media” really turned me off. MSM, eh? Like AM talk radio, Fox News and the Wall Street Journal? And the endless cavalcade of vicious, toxic shit on the internet that gets several hundred thousand page views a day? Marco, GFY.
It is “unresolved” that the documents were fake?
Uh oh.
The documents have still not been proven to be fakes.
Charles…you out there? Are you watching this?
There was no disagreement among the candidates tonight. None. It was personal attacks (mostly directed at Trump) and “drown government in a bathtub.” That’s it.
Maddow does have a point in that the questions about W’s service were ongoing until Rather blew it for everybody. That’s the way I remember it. The thing is that there was no equivalent of the Throbbing Memo that could have aided John Kerry. Showing the Bush docs to be fake was unusually effective because the refutation was quick and easy enough to simple to communicate. The things wrong in it were clear. The “things wrong” in John O’Neil’s vendetta against John Kerry were much harder to find and explain and could not be as nearly as clearly proven or shown.

Well, there was also the small matter of the sheer quantity of money and press attention given to assembling and disseminating the SBVT.
And also, it was a giant organized disinformation campaign facilitated by the willingness of right-wing pundits to act as unquestioning mules for talking points issues by PACs and Republican campaigners.

Keep telling yourself that.
On March 13, 1969, Kerry commanded one of five Navy Swift boats in a raid up the Bay Hap River and won a Bronze Star for actions under enemy fire. Thurlow commanded one of the other boats, and he has claimed in constant media rounds that there was no enemy fire. But, as the Post reported, Thurlow also won a Bronze Star that day, and the citation that accompanied it referred to “enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire” directed at “all units.”
That’s all it ever took for me, Thurlow and the other SBVFTruthers were a bunch of lying hacks.
Does anyone know this guy?
Ouch. That was a little close to the bone. Poor Jim Webb.

This whole “media bias” thing is a conspiracy theory-lite: conservative media gets to lie and distort in self-defense, because any criticism or skepticism is evil media liberalism.
We’re fucking doomed, because for every person using this idea cynically, there’s one who really believes it. And the cynic has to keep the believer convinced, so the no chance of a self-correction. Eventually the people who really think there’s a media conspiracy will win enough influence to fuck up the nation.

If memory serves correctly, the only big raucous noise that came from the audience in tonight’s debate came when the candidates talked about the media and how awful it is. Even agitprop policy talk was greeted with a mostly tepid response. Now, this was a roomful of Republicans from Colorado and perhaps surrounding states in freaking Boulder. Please do. You saw earlier the excerpts I posted from the Mapes book. She and Rather have been driving this narrative since they got the axe from CBS. Mapes to this day is convinced the documents still might be legitimate and there’s a good chance Rather is too. Trump basically laid out the gameplan he is using today.
Yeah, he should’ve totally owned that 47% quote, he would have totally won over the other 53%…

re: #92 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)
The case against Dubya was clear: he used family ties to duck service in Vietnam and then did not even show up for that. But they managed to totally derail the discussion into long Internet arguments about IBM vs Microsoft Word character spacing and saved his sorry ass to be elected again.
It’s better to say that Mary Mapes and Dan Rather set the issue up to be derailed by deciding to run with documents they hadn’t verified. They both screwed up big time and they are even now in denial about it. There’s nothing that George W. Bush or his 2004 campaign did that excuses the mistakes Mapes and Rather made.
Even if a letter handwritten by George W. Bush were to be found tomorrow wherein he wrote “Fighting on the ground is for the little people and I’m too important to do it.” it would not change what Mapes and Rather did wrong: They ran a ‘gamer-changer’ story or a massively covered issue relying on documents whose authenticity they had not verified and which turned out to be phonies, while overlooking what should have been clear warning signs in the documents themselves.

re: #114 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)
We forget that no candidate has a single delegate to date. And if you read the polling questions carefully, most people have not made any sort of final decision on which candidate they would ultimately vote for. Their support of T & C is an expression of their dislike for professional “establishment” politicians, but in the end, they know darn well that is who they have to nominate.
I disagree. The 27% will vote for whomever the teabagger candidate is. If the GOP does a run around to give them Jeb! or perhaps even Rubio, they are going to lose a percentage of that 27% because they are the kind that won’t vote for anyone but the craziest of candidates. The GOP may know who they have to put up but if the GOP does an end run around the most populist candidate, they are going to lose support from the base. And while there may be some die hard Vote For Whomever The GOP Nominates voters…if they go off into crazy land, they are going to lose some Always R voters.
An unhappy postscript to an dismal story:
Eric Garner’s son, 16, arrested for riding a stolen Citi Bike in a playground after dark
Emery Snipes was arrested Tuesday in Manhattan on a charge of possession of stolen property
Snipes and his friends were stopped by police inside a playground after they were spotted riding the wrong way
The 16-year-old was ordered to perform one day of community services; charges will be dropped if his stays out of trouble for six months
His mother, Esaw Garner, grounded Emery and stripped him of phone privileges indefinitely
Mrs Garner said her son told her he didn’t know the rental bike was stolen
Eric Garner died July 17, 2014, after an NYPD officer put him in a chokehold during a confrontation with police
The good thing is that unlike his father’s (fatal) last arrest, that of Emery Snipes was handled properly and he has been punished fairly and not overly punitively.

For one, the gangs aren’t everywhere, the police are present everywhere from the largest cities to the smallest towns. For two, the police are in a position of authority I.e ability to arrest and detain that gangs cannot. If I were black, I’d absolutely mistrust the police with all that happens.
Remember the Guy Who Gave His Employees a $70,000 Minimum Wage? Here’s What Happened Next.
The 20 percent raises Price implemented in 2012 were supposed to be a one-time deal. Then something strange happened: Profits rose just as much as the previous year, fueled by a surprising productivity jump—of 30 to 40 percent. He figured it was a fluke, but he piled on 20 percent raises again the following year. Again, profits rose by a like amount. Baffled, he did the same in 2014 and profits continued to rise, though not quite as much as before, because Gravity had to do more hiring.

I don’t understand why this makes conservatives angry. It’s a private business owner doing what he wants with his company’s money, no government coercion or any other kind of role involved.
It’s because it destroys the Republican narrative, that’s why it makes them angry. Once you cram the JOB CREATORS!!!11!! bullshit down every American’s throats, that they deserve everything while the people doing the work should be happy with whatever scraps they’ve been thrown, this is the exact narrative they need to destroy. Because both narratives can NOT exist.

It infuriates them because it proves the gospel they believe about low wages= good for business being sound. Just like they always focus on Cuba, North Korea, or Maoist China or the Soviet Union when socialism comes up. If socialism is such a problem, then where all the migrants from Scandinavia? But that’s another issue I concede so I’ll stop rambling. It all makes sense to me. If you compensate your employees well, they’re going to work harder and they’re going to want to work. Pay your employees like shit and they won’t work as hard. It’s just common sense IMO. Not all of us have delusions of grandeur where one day we’re the “boss” and sitting on a multimillion dollar bonus. Would it be nice? Sure but is it realistic nope.
To me the biggest problem is a lot of these police departments don’t even seem to care about building up trust in heavily African-American communities. Force and power are valued more and that’s really a shame. I see right wing pundits and commentators give the African-American community especially a hard time when it comes to gang violence for not trusting the police but after seeing how the police are in places like Ferguson and other places, what reason do they honestly have? To paraphrase a quote in Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello in the Departed, if it comes down to gangsters or cops, what’s the real difference anyhow? A lot of us here in Suburbia have a rose eyed vision of the police. They’re our protectors. They were at Ground Zero on 9/11 etc. Just saying, I think it’s easy to see why this mistrust exists and why someone sadly would want to become an ex-pat.

Dillon Taylor’s family sues Utah city and ‘trigger-happy’ police over ‘vicious culture’
It all starts with the initial training of an officer..
“That detachment begins in the earliest days of officer training, the lawsuit claims, pointing to a “gruesome, horrific” video that is shown to all cadets in the state’s police academy to make officers needlessly fearful of the public.
The video depicts “shocking and violent deaths of police officers at the hands of alleged criminal assailants,” the lawsuit claims.
“The rationale behind the [academy] video is to instill in officers the unrealistic fear that every time they put on their badge, they could be going to a grisly death,” the suit states. “Police officers are trained — either explicitly or implicitly — to view all citizens as potential enemy combatants, and to approach all encounters with them from the perspective that each and every one could lead to the officer’s death. Those officers come to accept as fact an extreme and irrationally aggrandized view of the risks inherent in their job as a police officer … and that any hesitation or judicious use of restraint will result in their death.”

Well phase two of the great genealogy hunt has began. I’ve contacted researchers in the places where my relatives lived both in the US and in Europe. Son of a president, brother of another, and grandson of a Senator. FDR was a distant cousin of TR’s. The connection probably wouldn’t be as well known if FDR had a different surname. A 5th cousin is pretty far removed. Put things in perspective, I’ve only recently met my 2nd cousins.
re: #203 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

Yeah I mean obviously Quincy had the more legendary father but pure pedigree speaking, he’s got 12 years of presidents and another 8 years of vice presidents and a few terms in the Senate from his Dad, brother, and grandpa. That’s quite unique and that’s why it’s laughable for Jeb to attack Washignton. Without Washington, Jeb Bush is just another guy honestly.
I do agree that Jeb Bush is trying and failing to play “outsider” to a primary voting base that doesn’t want to nominate an insider (and a member of the Bush family is a Washington insider, regardless of how he or she wishes to be seen). And in doing so he’s doing the Republican Party a disservice. He should accept that the party’s rank-and-file don’t want someone like him this time around and drop out.

Yeah a 5th cousin is someone you share a relation with who was born 150-175 years prior.
re: #207 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

Though their prestige reflected off of each other in a number of ways. Certainly TR’s sons and grandsons in the US Army during WWII felt driven to excel by the fact that their name associated them with the president. And excel for the most part they did (though the elder Kermit Roosevelt killed himself due to the combination of family pressure and depression).
Hell though, I bet a good chunk of my 5th cousins may be overseas still. By the way, FDR and TR weren’t the only presidential cousins. We just see TR and FDR as closely related since A) they shared a name and B) FDR did marry his niece and C) Both wre larger than life types

IT’s actually remarkable how a lot of the presidents are related to each other. The only presidents who come to mind that probably don’t have much connection to the others are the uniquely mostly Irish Kennedy and Reagan.

If I could go back in time, I’d tell my granduncle not to sell his hotel near Columbus Circle until after WWII, with the stipulation that he leave me 50% of the proceeds in his will. His wife would get the other half. (They had no children.)
The hotel was torn down in the 1950s for the Lincoln Center development, so selling in 1946 would be about right.
I’d also advise my parents to hold onto that parcel of land they had on Long Island.

No, it was allowed. One of the few smart things Dick Morris has said since becoming a pundit was to discuss how Congressional votes are most often a sort of Kabuki dance: The Freedom Caucus had already decided to accept Paul Ryan as speaker, but to allow some of its members to mollify their own voter base those members were permitted to vote for Webster. Had it been needed, many of those voting for Webster would have voted for Ryan instead.
The votes for Webster were fake opposition, intended to allow the Congresspeople casting those votes to “fun the bozos” of their voter base.

Uncle John did pretty well anyway, selling the hotel in the 1920s before the Crash. I think he kept an interest in it, because his brother lived at the hotel for a time in the 1940s. John was able to retire in his early 50s, bought some property in the Catskills for a country home, and lived in a variety of Upper East Side apartments. He and his wife traveled a bit, too, sailing to Europe at least twice a year.
But if he had held on a little longer, he could have made even more dough. Weathering the Depression would have been a problem, though.

Interesting. Funny you bring up the depression, since in the family history group I set up on Facebook, my relatives were wondering how my family weathered it. I think they did pretty good as my grandfather was a college graduate as was his older brother who also was a law school grad too so they did alright. They do seemed to have live a good life though. The folks who had it rough were factory workers, farmers and anyone who had invested most of his money in the markets. Times for my dad’s family were lean, and he had to drop out of college (CCNY) to go to work. His dad sold insurance, and his company managed to survive the crash long enough for him to retire from it with a nice pension. My mom’s dad had a harder time, as he was a carpenter and jobs were hit-or-miss back then, but they managed, too.

No factory workers that I know of in my family but my mom’s grandfathers were both miners. They had it tough even before the Depression hit. My mom’s mom has talked a lot about how the union fought and won to get them rights. That’s one reason why I will awlays defend unions when they’re bashed.

While arguing that more college students should consider majors with better job prospects, Jeb Bush took a stab at psychology majors on Saturday at a town hall in South Carolina.
“Universities ought to have skin in the game,” the Republican presidential candidate said, according to the Washington Examiner. “When a student shows up, they ought to say ‘Hey, that psych major deal, that philosophy major thing, that’s great, it’s important to have liberal arts … but realize, you’re going to be working a Chick-fil-A.’”
This comment didn’t sit well with, well, psych majors, who took to Twitter to defend their degrees with the hashtag #ThisPsychMajor. People used the hashtag to discuss the accomplishments they’ve achieved with their education.

I woke up this morning & couldn’t remember what day it is.
Then I found out and realized I didn’t care.
When I used to travel all the time I woke up one day and realized I didn’t know what city I was in. As I would generally stay in the same hotel brand, all the rooms looked the same.
I lay there trying to remember where I was.
That’s when I realized I was traveling too much.

2 dead in attempted home invasion
EAST MILLCREEK — An East Millcreek homeowner and a man whom police are calling a home invader are both dead after an exchange of gunfire overnight.
Unified police say Jesse Lee Bruner, 34, knocked on the door of the the home at 3730 S. Twinbrook St. (3145 East) about 2 a.m. Thursday.
The homeowner, 47-year-old Russell Reed Jacobs, answered the door but refused to let Bruner inside, police said. An altercation and a chase ensued when Bruner allegedly tried to force his way inside.
The two men, who were both armed, ran down the street where shots were fired.
Sigh…

The man, whose name was not released, told deputies he was a heavy drug user but hoped to “live a drug-free life for his mother” after watching Obama’s speech, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
He showed deputies a cooler where he kept a set of digital scales, 16 Suboxone packs and patches, marijuana, 19 grams of ecstasy and more than 150 pain pills.
The deputies seized the drugs and took them to an evidence technician for disposal, the sheriff’s office said.
No criminal charges were filed against the man, who is in his mid-30s, and deputies took him to a treatment center, where he voluntarily entered a drug addiction rehabilitation program.

So, the flat taxers are looking more and more like flat earthers when facts hit them upside the head.
For instance, got someone claiming that flat tax will create economic growth. I then tweet back KS, which went all flat tax, and proceeded to have a massive deficit and no economic growth. The response was that she’s talking at the federal level, and for me to do my own research (as opposed to her nonsensical and fact-free raving about flat tax).
Vicious then jumped in with some factual stylings, but this twit-nit is still going on about the virtues of flat taxes. Even though there’s absolutely no evidence it will spur economic growth or do anything other than shift tax burdens from rich to everyone else while exploding the deficit.
These people are economic illiterates and the GOP shills like Cruz are banking on them.

Right, that was my entire point. That’s exactly the kind of “unnecessary liberal arts degree” that I see conservatives shit on all the time.
I will also point out that Jeb? is endorsing a higher education policy that has been adopted by social democratic European countries, whereby a smaller set of academically elite students gets a traditional university education, and the rest are streamed into vocational programs.
Besides, aren’t we told all the time about how part-time work at a place like Chik-Fil-A is an opportunity, not a dead-end? That it’s supposed to be the stepping stone to greatness if you put in effort, work hard, and look to find a better profession? Is Jeb? effectively admitting that it is a dead-end for many, which totally undercuts the whole argument that there’s no need for raising the minimum wage because nobody stays in those jobs forever?

HUGE dustup at the office this morning.
To give context, people bring their dogs to the office here. Generally it’s not a problem since the dogs tend to be well behaved aside from barking at UPS delivery men or at mail carriers. There’s a sign on the door letting people know dogs are here and to not knock on the door.
Today a UPS guy showed up and brought dog treats, which he usually does. He can do his job, the dogs are happy. Today, two of the dogs fought over a treat that fell on the floor. The dogs got separated. One of the account executives, who owned one of the dogs in the fight, packed up and left the office, ironically complaining about the noise. The other dog owner, who is a developer, was already on edge about server issues he wasn’t able to solve right away.
One guy leaves. Another guy flips out and slams the door because of the issues he’s dealing with and the dogs. And we’re not even halfway through the day.

The meeting at Holman United Methodist Church, attended by several hundred, was quickly overtaken by about 50 protesters from organizations including the national activist group Black Lives Matter, which was formed in the wake of high-profile police killings of young black men. As Garcetti spoke to a full house in the church’s cavernous sanctuary hall, the demonstrators stood and turned their backs to him.

Toward the end of the hourlong session Garcetti, ringed by police officers, struggled to reach his car as he was swarmed by a crowd of chanting activists — and once inside the vehicle, he was forced to wait amid blaring sirens until the crowd was dispersed by the LAPD.

Chuck C. Johnson was embarrassed that he doxed himself, so he made up an obvious lie to make himself look better.
So, if it was an ‘old’ address, why was CCJ there to call the cops on the process server?
He’s a liar, and a bad one at that.
re: #436 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse
I’ve never heard of people taking their dogs to work. I’d imagine little dust ups like this would happen a lot.
It might be an Austin thing. A lot of offices around here advertise as pet friendly. It’s not uncommon for people to bring their dogs in.
In general the dogs in the office are well behaved and don’t cause issues. Today a rogue treat fell on the floor. Oops.

Again with knocking professionals. The other day it was “the professional class is out to get me.” As a pediatric neurosurgeon, Carson was and is a card-carrying (literally in his case) member of the professional class.

That and stunts like this one…
Their anger & frustration is perfectly understandable, but they can’t let their emotions get the better of them if they want to have long-term success. Every mistake, every outburst, every less than civil interaction will be recorded and used against them over & over again to delegitimize them (by those who don’t want them to succeed). They need to recognize that and be smarter more disciplined, get rid of any serial troublemakers.

It is a quaint little remark and will amuse some, but it is TOTALLY FUCKING IRRELEVANT to anything to do with modern life, economics or politics.
Not only that, but Carson trained for years before they let him crack the skull of a living patient. Is he proposing to let amateurs dabble in brain surgery?

And that is why they are against classic liberal educations. The bottom line is they teach critical thinking and the GOPers just hate critical thinking. It makes it too easy to see and understand just how crooked they are.
I think you’re right on about that. They definitely aren’t fond of unconventional thinking for sure.

Yesterday we were hit with an unconstitutional demand letter from Morrison & Foerster, the firm representing the National Abortion Federation in its suit against David Daleiden and the Center for Medical Progress.
A person in plain clothes with a gun on his hip also arrived at Charles C. Johnson’s home. Johnson didn’t know who this person was & called the police. The man turns out to have claimed to be a process server and through [sic] the documents down on the ground outside Johnson’s home. […]

And yet gang violence if by far the greater danger to young black men, even if they aren’t in a gang. But I do not see people claiming asylum from the P-Stones or the Bloods.
Why are your comments on race always so tone deaf? Don’t you live in a city with lots of black people and other minorities? Do you interact with them at all?
Yeah, urban street violence is more deadly. So what? We pay the cops to do a job, thus we hold them to a much higher standard than we do street criminals. Those criminals get arrested, convicted, and locked away for very long periods of time. The cops we’re talking about rarely even get prosecuted. Moreover, we’re paying their salaries and thus have a reasonable expectation that they’ll behave better than criminals.
