Video: Ben Carson Gets Totally Incoherent on Dealing With ISIS

“You can’t fly there”
Politics • Views: 55,586

YouTube

This has to be one of the most pathetic performances I’ve ever seen from a presidential candidate, as Ben Carson struggles (and utterly fails) to make sense about how he’d deal with ISIS. It goes on and on, getting more and more painful.

Carson says he’d shoot down Russian planes if they violated his no-fly zone over Syria, and if they retaliate — “we’ll see what happens.” Unreal.

It amazes me that someone can be taken seriously as a presidential candidate when they have zero understanding of a situation like this

It’ snot so surprising when you consider his supporters are just as clueless.

I wish our media was less clueless and made people think about things like this. They won’t though, because it’s uncomfortable and uncomfortable doesn’t make money.

I just realized Carson sounds incoherent because he’s using both frontal lobes. Both of them at the same time.

8
jaunte  Nov 15, 2015 • 8:16:09pm

Damn, he’s talking about the lobes again.

SteveMcGaziBolaGate RN  Nov 15, 2015 • 8:16:55pm

I was killing time at a Walmart looking at books when I saw a couple Ben Carson books. SO I picked one up for laughs. One of his thoughts about judges was that they should be selected locally so they would be more accountable to the will of the citizens. He seems to have mixed up judges with representatives.

In a lot of states, judges are elected. Here in California there’s a hybrid election/appointment system where the Governor appoints a Supreme Court justice, he/she is confirmed by the state senate, and then every few years, the voters get to vote as to whether they should be retained

Sorry, mixed up the process. It’s not the senate. Appointees are reviewed by a State Bar committee and then approved by the commission on judicial appointments. Then there’s retention elections

When it comes to Carson, the Republican base gives him pass after pass because he endlessly bullshits about his relationship with Jesus.

Even if Carson said he molested little kids and Jesus forgave him, the insane base of the GOP would double down their support of him!!!!

Then again, one has to remember that this is the “Republican Base”.
“Zero understanding” is taken as the baseline for almost any analysis of foreign affairs - hence “Moar War” is the default position….

Another flaw in the logic of the GOP is they seem to assume the U.S. Military is strong enough to wipe any other country in the world off the map with relative ease.

That may be true on an individual basis, but if nations start ganging up on us…

31
Dexter's New Approach  Nov 15, 2015 • 8:31:34pm

I thought i was pretty smart to predict smarmy assholes like Walker and Paul would never take hold a long time ago. And too, months ago, that Jeb didn’t have it in him and Rubio would emerge as the party favorite. And sooner, conceded that maybe Trump was going away any time soon. But I never saw this Carson thing sticking.

Amazingly, I underestimated the idiocy of the american right wing.

32
Eclectic Cyborg  Nov 15, 2015 • 8:31:49pm

I mean this perpetual war garbage that the GOP spouts is EXACTLY why a lot of the rest of the world thinks the U.S. is a bully and self designated world policeman.

The way it played out is the way it should have played out. Terrorists attack France > France bombs the hell out of the terrorists. There’s no reason for the direct involvement of U.S. forces right now.

Chuck may be feeling the heat during his deposition tomorrow. The National Abortion Federation filed a motion against David Daleiden on Friday, which names Chuck by name. I’ll post the full document later, but I have posted the document (see below for link), but here’s an excerpt.

A week and a half after forcing through this clearly overbroad production, Daleiden’s “great friend,” Charles C. Johnson, began publishing it on the Internet. (Foran Decl. Exs. 5, 7.) Johnson initially claimed that he obtained the recordings from a “congressional staffer.” (Foran Decl. Exs. 6, 8.) He would later tell the Washington Post, however, that he received it from someone with the username “patriotgeist,” and that this individual did not identify themselves as being from Congress. (Foran Decl. Ex. 9.) Rather, they told Johnson that “he” was someone who felt “morally interested in having this material come out.” (Id.) At the very same time, Johnson was in frequent contact with Daleiden himself, [REDACTED].

Whether or not Johnson’s incredible cover story is to believed (NAF will depose him next week), one of two things must be true: either (1) a Congressional staffer, out of the tens of millions of potential candidates, happened to select Daleiden’s “great friend” Johnson to leak materials covered by this Court’s TRO; or (2) Daleiden forced the overbroad disclosure to Congress and then used it as a smoke screen in order to pass the same materials to Johnson, an individual notorious for publishing on the Internet intimate, private details of people’s lives (including, to take one of many abhorrent examples, the names and pictures of rape victims). (Foran Decl. Ex. 10.)

The material Johnson posted included things like a 36-minute clip from a [REDACTED]
, and an hour-and-a-half panel discussion on [REDACTED] (Foran Decl. ¶¶ 17-18, Ex. 11.) Such videos have nothing to do with material sought by the congressional subpoena. Yet the videos, now publicly disclosed, identify multiple physicians by name and show their faces. (Id.) Moreover, as explained more fully in NAF’s Motion for Preliminary Injunction which is incorporated by reference, Johnson’s disclosure of the overbroad materials [REDACTED] notwithstanding this Court’s clear and unambiguous order has led directly to further instances of harassment and intimidation against NAF’s members. (See NAF Mtn. for Prelim. Inj. at 13 (collecting instances of online harassment and death threats as a result of Johnson’s disclosures).)

NAF is asking that Daleiden be held in contempt of court for failing to produce all the documents and videos demanded of him.

Interesting factoid about France’s hate speech laws:

In 2013 Bob Dylan was placed under judicial investigation in France for allegedly provoking ethnic hatred of Croats. It followed a legal complaint lodged by a Croat association in France over a 2012 interview Dylan gave to Rolling Stone magazine. [12] In April 2014, the case against Dylan himself was dropped, but the director of Rolling Stone‍ ’s French edition was ordered to stand trial.[13]

GotNwes files this report:

BREAKING, EXCLUSIVE: Abortion group seeks contempt charges against David Daleiden, mentions his ‘great friend’ Chuck Johnson in motion

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) filed a motion Friday in federal court, seeking contempt of court charges against the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) and its leader, David Daleiden.

The NAF claims that Daleiden has not complied with a temporary restraining order against release of CMP’s controversial video hackjob of Planned Parenthood. It asks for relief, including NAF’s costs and attorneys’ fees.

A hearing on the motion (see text below) is set for Dec. 18 in US District Court of California, Northern Division.

The motion cites in some detail the related activity of blogger and Award Winning JournalistTM Chuck C. Johnson, a college friend of Daleiden, who published some of CMP’s Planned Parenthood videos on his website, GotNewsDotCom (which is not this one.)

And oh God, some people are blaming it on the Black Lives Matter movement?

[Embedded content]

Looking at the timeline for the hashtag, the actual Black Lives Matter movement members were using it almost exclusively before November- thus it having nothing at all to do with the Paris attacks. When I looked at November 13, it was the first the Infowars conspiracy crowd, followed by a very small number of individuals who might well be associated with BLM, then the trolls with fake accounts and white nationalists with accounts pretending to be African Americans (the timelines for those is a dead giveaway) started to dogpile. At that time the rightwingers started noticing and attributed ALL of it to the BLM associated people.

I’m not sure about that. Neoconservatism is driven by hyper-Americanism. The problem with some very religious evangelical groups is that they can be pacifists, or at least have pacifists in their midsts, which gets in the way of the continual war impulse of the neoconservatives. Cruz’s father is still fighting his Cuban version of the cold war so to that extent Ted Cruz fits the neoconservative mold, but I am quite sure that neoconservative masterminds are not really the same crowd as the very evangelical crowd. The former simply use the latter as needed.

My understanding of the neoconservative movement is that it is an outgrowth of Cold War strategy and the so-called military-industrial complex. They don’t want a multi-polar world. They believe that the US should be the single dominant power in the world.

With the onset of cooler weather I’ve tripled my electricity usage, since I use electric to heat my place. Bummer… my summer electric bills were really low. SDG&E is moving to a new price structure (as are all California utilities I believe). There have been times when we were briefly in that position, as we were at the end of WWII before the USSR developed nuclear capabilities. We need to recognize that we got there by default, namely from Europe self-destructing in WWII or the USSR collapsing at the end of the Cold War.

And our dominance, however enthralling to policymakers, was only temporary. There is no staving off the inevitable rise of other nations, ideologies and economic systems.

TI am so glad we don’t vote for judges or Supreme Court Justices here in NJ. How am I supposed to know who would make a good jurist?

In Jersey you get to be a judge by making lots of political donations. It’s still better than elections. They made my last landlord a judge and he’s the most unethical attorney I’ve come across. Fortunately it appears that he made some enemies quick as not everyone buys his suck up bullshit. He was ratted out by the court administrator for waiving fines that he shouldn’t have been waiving. He did it for me but not to be nice. It was more like, “Look at me and how powerful I am. I’m going to waive your client’s fine!” Other judges get away with waiving fines because they don’t make enemies. Word on the street says he won’t be reappointed. Happy dance!!

Again, I do not make the rules, I am telling about cops. What he said to my brother was, “I’m really scared of the dentist and thank you for such a great job. While artists like Foo Fighters and U2 were forced to cancel or postpone their European shows in the aftermath of the Paris terror attacks, Madonna decided to soldier on with her own trek with a Saturday night concert in Stockholm, Sweden, where the singer delivered a moving, heartfelt and tearful speech about the massacre in the French capital.

Blow up the oil fields he says. As if that’ll solve anything other than giving Halliburton and other oil companies yet another shot at lucrative rebuilding contracts.

No, you want to retain the oil infrastructure as intact as possible because there’s a lot of people who aren’t involved in ISIL who rely on it for their livelihood. Iraq for starters. Cripple their oil infrastructure, and you’ll only end up radicalizing even more Iraqis who figure that it’s better to join with folks who will at least give them some pay than those who bomb the key infrastructure.

And that doesn’t begin to address the ecological toll of blowing up the oil infrastructure too.

ISIL power runs along the same basic rat lines that the insurgency ran from 2003 onwards. Their center of power is in and along the Iraq/Syria border. That’s got to be the focus, not the oil wealth. ISIL profits from the fear and power vacuum in the region. Oil is an ancillary means (and who are they selling the oil to that enables them to have money in the first place - a question going unanswered). There’s also the human trafficking and other depravities that ISIL engages in that includes sales of antiquities and looting.

And if you’re an Iraqi or a Lebanese and see the outpouring regarding the Paris attacks, you can’t help but wonder why the world didn’t show a similar outpouring when Beirut was bombed just weeks earlier. Or when any of the dozens of terror attacks hit Iraq - and for months and years at a time, attacks with triple digit casualties were all too frequent.

Paris > Beiruit > Baghdad > Nigeria (re: Boko Haram). That’s the calculus that ISIL is using. It’s the one that those living in the Middle East see - both in the terror attacks and the reprisals (that some lives are more covered and seemingly worth more. ISIL knows that its attacks in the ME simply don’t get the coverage as say a Paris attack would, which is why they carry out high profile attacks to serve as recruitment posters, but they continue the slaughter virtually uninterrupted in Syria and Iraq.

The refugee crisis that ISIL has helped spur, likewise helps create new terrorists and radicalization - both as countries seek to shutter their borders against people fleeing the violence and some rage against the governments for turning their backs on the defenseless, while others plum those refugees for those who they can turn to their cause of jihad.

Ignoring that the pace of attacks relates to how many targets there are, who’s fighting and with what gear.

Kosovo involved targeted actual army units, not merely terrorists who blended into the woodwork. Identifying targets much harder, and trying to avoid collateral damage is important as it’s just as easy to blow up a wedding as a terror cell gathering.

Claiming that pace of strikes is a sign of indifference or inability to take ISIL seriously ignores the facts on the ground.

So Neo-Liberals completely and utterly fucked up the Middle East into oblivion, and now it is regular old Liberalisms job to clean up the mess(like it probably should be).

Very well, bomb these fucking death cultists into oblivion. I’m tired of seeing pictures of what looks like a version of the Khmer Rouge in Syria and Iraq.

I really think if Liberals fall back onto an isolationist position regarding this, than we will be seeing the Republicans controlling every lever of the federal government in 2017.

I don’t really think one can call themselves a Liberal if they would do nothing about an apocalyptic cult with enough territory to call itself a state, that enjoys broadcasting it videos of homosexuals, intellectuals, and religious minorities off the tops of buildings or having their heads chopped off.

This is a cult with a military force, that passions itself as one of the Medieval conquerors such as the Khans or Timur. With the accompanying savagery that those armies brought with them as well.

It has to be stopped. You can’t reason with it, you just have to destroy it. If human beings decide to act as animals against their fellow man, then they deserve to be treated as animals.

re: #205 subterraneanhomesickalien

The ME has been a mess long before the so called neo-liberals got their war on. AQ was there. So too were regional rivalries. And before those, you had longstanding religious animosities between Sunni and Shia - majorities v. minorities (which in Iraq is flipped as Shia are the majority, Sunni the minority, and Ba’athists were a minority of Sunni dominating the much larger national population). On and on it goes - where if you want to push back in time, you can go to the colonial period after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, which arranged arbitrary borders along lines of convenience and brokered in back rooms often without regard to which regional group, tribe, or ethnic group was in control but rather who the European leaders thought should be in power.

Sectarian violence continues as it has, now with more concentrated violence. We’ve got offshoots of already nihlistic terrorist groups that consider even their predecessors to be insufficiently violent and Muslim enough.

All the while, there’s tens of millions of people who just want to be left alone without fear of violence caught in the crossfire.

We now return to our regularly scheduled war on Christmas, now with more capitalism.

Want to sit in Santa’s lap at some malls? Pay up for the “experience”.

Sure. Go for it.

Some people have way too much time complaining about this kind of thing. No one is forcing you to pay for sitting in Santa’s lap (though I thought if you were doing that, you were paying for photos of your kid with Santa?). It’s the same outrageous outrage as when a few malls decided to go modernist and drop the pagan trees in favor of Frozen-tundra backdrops.

What all these folks ignore is that the malls do these displays not for religious reasons but to make money. Drive traffic. Get people to stick around and spend more money (even as more people buy stuff online).

I’m nearly done with all my holiday shopping - nearly all of it online. Of course, that Hannukah is early this year means that waiting until the end of November isn’t totally feasible with items that might need a lead time.

Three Simple Truths About Terror, Religion, and Islam

One: Terrorism is the illusion of power. It only becomes powerful when people fall for it. […]

Two: Like advertising, terrorism exploits our emotional vulnerabilities. I don’t suppose terrorists sit around studying evolutionary psychology, but they don’t have to. […]

Three: Islam, per se, is not the problem. Neither is religion generally. […]

If you’re going to reply, please read the whole thing first.

lawhawk  Nov 16, 2015 • 7:45:00am

The media have their narratives, and they simply can’t stray from them, even when the facts suggest otherwise. The President is loathe to use force (except for the 8k airstrikes, killing 10s of thousands of ISIL, AQ, and other insurgents, terrorists, and threats from Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Sudan, all the way to Afghanistan and Pakistan).

The President isn’t adverse to using military force. It’s knowing where and how to apply it to maximum effect to further our interests while denying ISIL benefits (as say in killing innocents, arming rebels who aren’t up to fighting ISIL and would end up losing their lives and their weapons to ISIL, inadvertently making ISIL stronger), etc.

Of course, trying to enunciate a strategy that doesn’t fit into 140 characters doesn’t play well with the right wing crowd that has snappy comebacks like bomb ‘em., rock’em, and sock’em, etc.

Morons at Lambeau Field interrupted yesterday’s league-mandated moment of silence for Paris terrorism victims with all manner of ejaculations, including “MUSLIMS SUCK!” (We isolated a crowd-level audio feed of the moment in the above video.) Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers addressed the remark in his postgame presser, and the result is one of the more thoughtful reactions seen from an NFL star in a long time:

Things like these and Obama’s reponse are the only thing keeping me from just chucking in my membership card for humanity. It’s a thin relief though, since the more I see and read outside of safe havens like this, the more I come to realize that the rest of the country is far more in tune to the Ben Shapiros and Bobby Jindals than to the President Obamas.

The Xenophobia and hate of the silent majority is real and it’s pretty much ubiquitous. And it feels like no matter how hard I do my part to fight it, the result is either angry rejection, angry contrarianism, or simple apathy. It feels like any contribution I can have to change minds instead changes minds toward the other way. I’ve seen liberals go full on xenophobia over shit like this and immigration and never any similar vice versa reaction. It’s always a lurch rightward toward hate and knee-jerk retaliation.

Paris has only convinced me further that this country is hard-wired for the right and its brand of hate and prejudice, and any attempts to fight it seem to only feed it the more as people decide to shun you.

I fucking hate feeling like this to, because it underscores one simple thing: I am not American. I am not American because I’m not allowed to be American. I am an outcast in the country, and I’m not even Gay, Black, or Muslim, the unholy trinity of Truly Super Motherfucking Not-American.

This country was never meant for someone like me and it never will be, because it feels like any attempts to fight will simply cause the rest of the country to hate me and ideas like mine all the more.

Statistically, you’ve got a better chance of being killed driving or by a DUI than a terror attack. Especially if you live outside NYC metro area (which has been targeted more than any other US city, and which suffered more casualties than any other US city) or OKC, which on a per capita basis suffered more than NYC.

Risk of dying from health maladies far exceeds those of terrorism.

But it’s the perception of risk that leads to media outlets stoking demands of war.

I’ve said before that I sometimes catch the first half hour of Morning Joke on MSNBC to see what Joke is going to be popping off about for the day. It is also a good way to know the day’s Republican talking points…they get them out early for Joke Scarborough to get everyone going on for the day. It’s the Republican version of caffeine.

I knew it would be quite the show because of the Paris attacks. No disappointment.

The big thing outrage for the day was “President Obama refuses to acknowledge ‘Radical Islam’ and call it for what it is…and so do all the Democratic presidential candidates.”

And everyone on the panel was mouthing off about Obama/Democrats can’t say ‘Radical Islam’ and how they are in denial, etc. Apparently saying Jihadists or terrorists is not enough…you have to get Islam in there.

Then he had a guest on (Black guy, I didn’t catch his name/position but seemed to be a terrorist expert) who came on an shot a big hole in the whole stupid plea to say ‘Radical Islam’ and said ISIS really is not Muslim, they are nutcase terrorists that use Islam as an excuse. He went on to say that Muslims do not use the term ‘Radical Islam’ because there is no real radical Islam. He made a point that Muslims do not want “Radical” associated with “Islam” and I think that is the thinking of Obama. I think he made a speech/statement about it a few times.

Well, that apparently didn’t meet the needs of Joe. No one on the panel said anything to contest the guy, they just moved on. I changed the channel after that.

Why is it so damn important to say Radical Islam??? I don’t get it.

The guy that I was talking about being on Morning Joke in thread #347 mentioned that one of the reasons they attacked Paris is because they are being beaten up pretty good in Iraq and Syria (from all the bombing Obama isn’t doing I guess) and “controlled” so they need to move around and create havoc elsewhere.

Again, that didn’t go over well with Joke.

Funny thing, I was looking to see if I can find video of the Morning Joke guest. On Joke’s own page they have several videos covering today’s show. Guess who is not covered?

It gets better, Greece apparently now thinks the fellow found with the “Syrian passport” is really from Algeria and bought a fake passport in Turkey to cover up his return from training with IS in Syria. Not just Texas…

MS Governor Phil Bryant says state will refuse Syrian Refugees

Bryant released the following statement on Facebook Monday morning:

“I’m currently working with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and Mississippi Office of Homeland Security to determine the current status of any Syrian refugees that may be brought to our state in the near future. I will do everything humanly possible to stop any plans from the Obama administration to put Syrian refugees in Mississippi. The policy of bringing these individuals into the country is not only misguided, it is extremely dangerous. I’ll be notifying President Obama of my decision today to resist this potential action.”

461

Hell, if you really stop and compare notes, the wingnut response to the Syrian refugees is practically a word-for-word remake of the Central America refugees.

“They’re really (gang members/terrorists) in disguise.”

“If they want to fix things, they need to go back and fight.”

“We don’t want them here, putting our people in danger.”

“Obama is letting them in as part of a grand scheme.”

Etc, etc. Who knew that wingnuts were so big into recycling?

re: #308 Kryptik

Wonderful post. Only two things I question:

Are the xenophobic mouth-breathers really a majority? I try to think they’re not—for sanity’s sake.

And, I only WISH they were silent.

Do Governors actually have the power to override the Feds/Homeland Security or is this just all theatrics and posturing?

At a minimum, Welfare States like AL, MS, etc., who get so much more money from the Federal government than they pay in, should have their welfare checks stopped if they won’t do what they’re told.

Ah, christology. The single biggest mess in theology. I prefer a fairly early view of following Jesus’ Way of life that was predominantly a slightly modified Judaism that welcomed both Jews and Gentiles. Preferably along the lines of James the Just of Jerusalem, a lot of the Mishna & the Didache rather than Paul but that’s a different argument.

Lenio is a 9/11 and Sandy Hook “Truther,” a Holocaust denier and anti-Semite who used social media to anonymously spew a barrage of racist and violent invective and frequently made references to “shooting up a school.”

From Dec. 2014 to Feb. 2015, Lenio used Twitter to publicize his anti-Israel, pro-gun, pro-Libertarian views while threatening to shoot children and kill anyone who disagreed with his opinions…

“After obtaining a search warrant, officers found a 9-mm semi-automatic rifle and a Russian-made bolt-action rifle. Lenio’s vehicle contained a .32 caliber semi-automatic pistol and more ammunition. Marijuana and jugs of urine also were found in the vehicle,” wrote Megan Strickland of dailyinterlake.com.

Lenio’s defense team managed to have his trial postponed earlier this year and has been working on a plea deal with prosecutors. Hutson noted, however, that when he was released on the condition that he not use social media at all, Lenio immediately reactivated his Twitter account under the name @PsychicDogTalk3 and proceeded to retweet anti-Israel propaganda and musings on how to satisfy the “urge to kill.”

“He has violated the court’s order and shown contempt for the judge 348 times,”

Though, if you want to take it further. Rousey didn’t appear have a good strategy, Holm played really good defense (which is something Rousey hadn’t really ever seen in the cage, and never seemed able to adjust) which allowed her to control the fight until she could connect with the big kick.

Then he says, “Yeah, but when they’re pulled over on the side of the road that is when I get them.” I just explained to this asshole that the car has to be MOVING! This is what you are dealing with. Not only that, I was there on a criminal matter and I get a call from this douchebag telling me that he can’t issue a subpoena without going to a grand jury? WHAT THE FUCK! That was the point of the blow job comparison, after all. At some point there is a line where cooperating is no longer an option for most people. We’re trying to figure out which of our rights you advise giving away to cops in order to walk away from the encounter.

Meanwhile,

The South African government on Friday warned of a worsening drought whose severity is impacting negatively on the country in both social and economic terms.

Because of the drought, the country’s current state of water storage is estimated at 64.3 percent of its normal full supply compared with 74.6 percent storage level at the same time last year, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Pravin Gordhan said at a briefing in Pretoria.

This excessive heat wave, which is the result of El Nino, has grossly exacerbated the dry and arid conditions that the country is currently experiencing and is putting a strain on the already stretched water resources across all provinces.

Pay bail, which for some Americans isn’t as easy as reaching for the credit card. In many cases, especially in minority communities where racial profiling is rampant, a police stop, arrest, and subsequent attempt at bail means significant costs and hassle that shouldn’t need to be entertained in the first place had the officer engaged in proper conduct in the first place and not used their power in a corrupt manner. It’s a de facto tax on minorities that these stops result in additional costs to the community - not even beginning to count the legal costs of trying to defend against the charges alleged by the cop.

Police conduct and excessive force, the inappropriate abuse of their authority to detain, arrest, and impose costs on the community are at issue.

No I am not! You are free to do what you want. I am advising you to put out the cigarette or you could end up in court with a criminal charge, paying bail, paying a lawyer and everything else. It’s my job to advise my clients that cops are trouble and that is exactly what I do. I did not advise to give a blowjob. I advised to put out a cigarette because you could be dealing with a psycho with a badge! That is not endorsing anything. It is a warning.

I question anyone that claims to be an attorney who advises people to get out of the car if the cop tells you to.

re: #600 klys (maker of Silmarils)

At what point do you advise not cooperating with a cop that is clearly abusing his authority?

That was the point of the blow job comparison, after all. At some point there is a line where cooperating is no longer an option for most people. We’re trying to figure out which of our rights you advise giving away to cops in order to walk away from the encounter.

Please note, some of us are white and some of us are not. It might help to spell out where you would draw the line for each group, since as you said yourself, cops can be quite racist.

Good question! I give a general warning to beware of cops because they are dangerous. This is not fact specific. If someone asked me if they should put out a cigarette if the cop asked them to do so, I would advise them as follows: It is their right to smoke in the car. However, consequences could result from failing to comply. I would list those consequences, which could include a criminal charge, sitting in jail, bail money, court appearances, attorney fees, missed work and so on. The client can then decide on their own whether or not they want to smoke after the cop asks them to put out the cigarette.

I will also add that Sandra Bland was asked to put out her cigarette and she got belligerent. She has every right to act belligerent and every right to smoke. That cop was about to let her go with a warning. That is not how it turned out. Was the cop right? NO! But she could have walked away and instead she ended up in a cell. That ain’t right. That is why if a cop asked me to put out the butt I would do so. Call me a kiss ass cop lover if you want, but I have enough problems and I don’t need a psycho cop pulling me out of the car because I have a right to smoke. I will smoke later. Maybe that makes me an idiot or a pussy. So be it.

I don’t feel like this really answered my question, because everything you say about the consequences of failing to put out a cigarette could also be said about a cop demanding a strip search or blow job. In the end, you are advocating that, at least for a cigarette, you think that it’s not worth it for most people to challenge the police’s authority. That is the end result of your words and indeed, what you say you would do yourself.

I’m asking at what point do you consider it worth challenging the police’s authority, knowing the potential consequences? What rights are important enough to you that even knowing it might be a psycho cop who doesn’t give a shit about your PBA card, you would stand up for?

I have to agree here. I wanted to do it if only to please @JihadiJew because I know he means well and has a kind heart, but IMO it sends the wrong message. Why should ANY person feel the need to say it when they’ve done nothing wrong? It sets a bad precedent, and won’t have any effect whatsoever on the bigots—as I said the other day, they’ll just dismiss it as too little, too late, insincere, etc.

I mean, my default assumption is that most people—regardless of their race, creed, gender, sexual preference, or my personal feelings about them—“unconditionally denounce all violence against innocents wherever and whoever they are.” If yours isn’t, that’s your problem and I’m not going to waste my time trying to change your mind because you’re obviously seriously lacking even the most rudimentary critical thinking skills.
