Ben Carson Calls for Prohibiting Religious Hate Speech, Irony Meter Goes Wild

Sheer hypocrisy
Politics • Views: 67,094

In an obvious attempt to push back against recent reports that he’s appallingly clueless in issues of foreign policy, Ben Carson (or someone in his campaign) has penned an opinion piece for the Washington Post titled: My plan to defeat the Islamic State.

And one of his prime directives is to ban “hate-based propaganda disguised as religious teaching.” Without a hint of understanding that right wing religious speech is often every bit as hateful as ISIS propaganda.

We have in place both the technical and legal capabilities to prohibit the widespread dissemination of hate-based propaganda disguised as religious teaching. We can monitor social media by expanding the search algorithms already in place to safeguard against inappropriate behavior, including religious hate speech. Once flagged, we can notify platform providers and encourage them to censor communications (and block users) that violate the terms of constructive discourse.

Oh, really now? So does that mean Carson would also support banning the dissemination of groups like Kevin Swanson’s “National Religious Liberties Conference,” which was attended by presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz, at which host Kevin Swanson openly called for the execution of homosexuals?

Does that count as “hate-based propaganda disguised as religious teaching” in Ben Carson’s weird world? I’m guessing it doesn’t. But in truth, the kind of extremist propaganda regularly circulated by groups like Swanson’s, with the support of top GOP politicians, is amazingly similar to the hate speech spread by ISIS and other radical Islamists.

Sorry to go OT right away, but…

We went out to dinner tonight with my brother-in-law and his fiancee, and the restaurant had Fox News on a TV that was directly in my line of sight. For better than an hour, I watched a pretty much non-stop loop of Paris footage.

No wonder their viewers are so scared.

One headline pissed me right off - ‘Russian and French air strikes kill ISIS radicals.’ Reinforcing the idea that this country is doing nothing.

And I have two questions:

1) What did Kerry say that’s so ‘controversial?’ They were harping on that like crazy.

2) Da fuq is a ‘soda can bomb?’ That got a lot of play, also.

The GOP, the party that regularly bitches about “thought crimes” and portraying Christians as one of the most oppressed groups in America, has a front-runner who is actually suggesting the government monitor social media sites for “hate-based propoganda”? What does Ben suggest the government do if the social media sites respond to their requests for the person engaged in “propaganda” be censored/banned by telling them to go pound sand?

I don’t know what Kerry said to cause outrage, but the ‘soda can bomb’ is the bomb ISIS is claiming brought down the Russian plane in Egypt-a bomb put in a soda can that had been sawed in half, filled with explosives and detonator and then put back together.

re: #11 makeitstop

Rachel talked about this tonight. In 2006, British authorities caught 8 men making bombs out of plastic soda bottles using syringes and apparently you can bring all those components (at the time) on an airplane and put them together and boom! Anyway, fast forward to the bombing of that Russian plane, ISIS released a picture of bomb they put on the plane and then there are pictures of syringes at the hotel room of where the terrorists in Paris stayed.

Hope that made sense.

Does anyone with two functioning neurons believe that Carson wrote (or ever understands) what those two sentences actually mean? That language is so un-Cardon like it boggles my mind that he (or his ghost writer) would associate his name with it. Yeesh.

He did indeed, wanted to set up a system by which college students could submit complaints about “extreme bias” and the government would have to investigate.

Since it’s Arabic, and Arabic doesn’t have much in the way of vowels (a, i and u), I’d guess Daesh —- which is what you’ll find if you look online too.

Edit: Oh, and most likely like “father.” Arabic also has 1500 years of separate development in different places, while keeping the same (Koranic) written language. This is a gross oversimplification.

The Ku Klux Klan, with its long history of violence, is the most infamous - and oldest - of American hate groups. Although black Americans have typically been the Klan’s primary target, it also has attacked Jews, immigrants, gays and lesbians and, until recently, Catholics. Over the years since it was formed in December 1865, the Klan has typically seen itself as a Christian organization, although in modern times Klan groups are motivated by a variety of theological and political ideologies.

Someone remarked in an earlier thread that presenting facts to a lot of people just runs into a monstrous wall of disbelief and refusal to accept presented links or materials since they run (or could run) counter to the desired narrative.

This reminds me a lot of something mentioned in Shirer’s _Rise and Fall of the Third Reich_ where he interviewed people after the war who said that the Nazi control of all media content had been so deep and repetitive that eventually they believed what the radio and papers told them. And the occasional report or rumor to the contrary was simply not true, or enemy lies trying to deceive them.

Daesh: al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham.

“…The term “Daesh” is strategically a better choice because it is still accurate in that it spells out the acronym of the group’s full Arabic name, al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham. Yet, at the same time, “Daesh” can also be understood as a play on words — and an insult. Depending on how it is conjugated in Arabic, it can mean anything from “to trample down and crush” to “a bigot who imposes his view on others.” Already, the group has reportedly threatened to cut out the tongues of anyone who uses the term.”

Respectfully beg to differ. Kerry’s record is far superior to GWB. Kerry made hard choices and suffered for them at the hands of the GOP’s worst operatives, but he didn’t shrink away. He’s long winded (and faced), but W (who is of course not as stupid as I think he is) would not be able to take on the diplomatic mission that Kerry has.

An actual comment from downstairs, from someone who has stated that they oppose admitting refugees because the background checks are not stringent enough in their opinion:

Given the track record, I have no faith in our ability to screen or monitor people entering the country.

His example, of course, is the Tsarnaev brothers, and how the process had failed because the background checks mumble mumble Russian warnings mumble mumble. Of course, point out that the timeline is such that at the time the background checks were done for the refugee application, it was 8 years before Russian intelligence had anything to say about them, and all of a sudden it’s just about how incompetent the US is at background checks and therefore we fail at screening or monitoring people admitted to this country.

I’m just pointing out the logical conclusion of those statements.

I heard on the radio earlier that Daesh released a video mentioning Times Square, so it could be about that.

That surely led to this new conference. The Comish talked about the video being a cut-up job of different scenes of Times Sq. edited together with some footage of a person strapping on a bomb belt. Crazy times. I’ve never seen a late night address that was called about a threat and not an ongoing situation. Weird timing. Maybe they wanted to sell the 24 hour aspects of the city.

No idea — Arabic doesn’t really write vowels (they’re the little squiggles you see around the letters), so there seems to be a lot of flexibility in transliteration, depending on who does the transliteration and what their native language is.

Well, after avoiding it until today, one of my FB friends went on a rant about how Muslims were evil.

It was my cousin. She is blocked now, after a message about how disappointed I am with her.

Should note that I seem to be the favourite of my grandparents, partially because my paternal cousins (of which she is one), have made dumb choices in life and relationships. She is proud to be engaged to a redneck for example. My sister had trouble with the law a few times, which leaves me being the clean one. Because of how logical I was earlier with the relationship with the Iranian lady, they actually approved of it, and they have said they will approve of anyone I end up meeting.

Meanwhile, I graduated college (though I struggle to find a job in my field, I could use help with that if any of you could).

To add to that: The “d” comes from al-Dawlah, (actually pronounced ad-Dawlah) the short “e” sound from the “i” in al-Iraq, and the “sh” from the Levant (al-Sham in Arabic, but actually pronounced ash-Sham and the “sh” sound is represented by a single letter).

The “al” in Arabic is the article “the”. I’m not sure why the first part is “Da” as Dawlah is the only word with an “a” sound near the beginning—the second word is al-Islamiyyah, which has a short “e” sound (or “i” sound, depending on the transliteration).

That said, “Iraq” starts with the letter ‘ayn (as does the word “Arabic” itself), whose pronunciation confounds most non-native speakers, including yours truly.

Oh, and there are no capital letters in Arabic, however some letters have up to three different forms depending on where they fall in a word (beginning, middle, end) and whether or not the letter can be connected on the right (some cannot).

Then there are the diacritical marks and something like 13 pronouns. Fun, huh? Between the difficulty of pronouncing some letters and the complexity of the grammar, you guys can see why I never learned it fluently. Simply learning to read & write it was the best I could do.

I bought a relatively cheap fountain brush pen a couple of months ago that I really like, but I bought it mostly for drawing and possibly trying my hand at some English brush script. I love the expressive lines you can get.

I also have a couple of other brush fountain pens and even some decent blue squirrel watercolor “quill” mops & (cheap) Sumi-e brushes, but they’re sooooo darned hard to control because they’re so soft.

I used to practice Arabic & Persian writing a LOT because I really loved the calligraphy. It helped me get pretty good at writing, but I don’t have the patience for trying to find a teacher or class. Plus, it’s hard to find the right pens here unless you make them yourself from bamboo or whatever (or buy a Western nib and file it down).

That community in Nagasaki was almost exactly at ground zero. The AAF probably didn’t know or care.

The Nagasaki bomb basically missed. They were off target by a very large distance even by 1945 standards - like a mile or two - and I’ve seen hints in the accounts that the crew basically dropped it blind from a single visual fix taken through a hole in the clouds without the required double-checks.

We didn’t give a rat’s ass about Japan, Christians or no. The target cities for the bombs were picked mostly because they were the only ones that weren’t yet burned. They were September-11thing our ships at sea on a daily basis and even the attack planners ten thousand miles away were numb and indifferent to the immensity of death that was pouring out of our B-29s in that last year of the war. The two big famous books on the first nukes and the Hydrogen bomb - forgot the author’s name - had some really bleak insights into the mindset of that summer.

Burning cities wasn’t a conspiracy in those days, it was a job description. Clock in, fly five hours, get shot at, burn thousands to death, fly back and clock out. I doubt anybody below the rank of Colonel even knew there were Christians in Japan, personally. :P

AAF General Curtis Lemay:

[…]The first pathfinder airplanes arrived over Tokyo just after midnight on March 10 and marked the target area with a flaming “X.” In a three-hour period, the main bombing force dropped 1,665 tons of incendiary bombs, killing 100,000 civilians, destroying 250,000 buildings, and incinerating 16 square miles (41 km2) of the city. Aircrews at the tail end of the bomber stream reported that the stench of burned human flesh permeated the aircraft over the target.

Precise figures are not available, but the firebombing campaign against Japan, directed by LeMay between March 1945 and the Japanese surrender in August 1945, may have killed more than 500,000 Japanese civilians and left five million homeless. Official estimates from the United States Strategic Bombing Survey put the figures at 220,000 people killed. and left five million homeless. These are the people the the Republicans want to block from coming here. I want everyone to see these pictures. These are not people to be afraid of.
Moreover, if we deny any refugees from coming here, we can completely give up any right of being called a moral force for good on the world stage, and forget the whole “home of the brave” part, because we turned away the needy over stupid, hysterical fears.

And anyone who is against refugees is a very bad Christian. While I am now Muslim myself, I can appreciate those who are Christian, and believe earnestly. You may recall the following, from Matthew 25:35-40

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”

To be fair, amongst other things (Nanking, Philippines, Bataan, etc.) there were the reports coming out of New Guinea, about how the Japanese soldiers trapped in the jungles there had gone cannibal. My dad’s uncle was a medic there. 40 years later, when I was talking to him, he would still get apoplectic when talking about the Japanese. His only quibble with the A-bombs was that was hadn’t glassed over the entire Japanese archipelago.

It was a total war. An ugly war. I am not giving Truman a total pass on this one, but there were a lot of factors at play at the time.

re: #147 Ace-o-aces

Traditional Islam is not a Sola Scriptura religion, so whether something appears or doesn’t appear in the Koran doesn’t tell us whether it’s a part of a given version of Islam. One also has to know what the accepted hadiths say, what the authoritative (for that version) scholars say, and so on.

It’s pretty similar to how traditional rabbinical Judaism functions - it is not based solely on the Pentateuch (or the Tanakh, for that matter).

There are of course Quranists who reject the Tradition (sort of like Karaites) and prefer to interpret the Koran directly, but they are a minority.

150
Nyet  Nov 19, 2015 • 12:15:03am

Then again, that’s how most of the traditional Christianity - the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox denominations - functions too. The Bible is usually interpreted through the prism of the Sacred Tradition - early Christian writings, Church Fathers and whatnot. Protestantism with its principle of Sola Scriptura and insistence on the direct interpretation of the Bible is a relative newcomer.

151
Nyet  Nov 19, 2015 • 12:18:50am

Which, continuing the thought, is actually its Achilles’ heel, for if you reject tradition, how can you justify something as basic as the biblical canon?

I need to find something more productive to do in my doddering years.

Keeping up with the wingnutting ills of our society has gotten old after several decades.

Our society has gotten a bit weird. Have you noticed? I wonder if our population size has grown so much that it has now crossed a threshold where even a group that would be but a small percentage of our society can now, through social media, connect themselves into some noticeable blob of malcontent.

On our current trajectory we should hit 400 million sometime in the 2030’s. I wonder what the US will be like then? Should I live to be so old (and I guess the odds are in my favor if an accident doesn’t take me) will I recognize my society? Or will I be like those wingnuts of today who seem to react without thought and slit my own metaphorical throat by voting against politicians and movements that ideally will be trying to help me?

Will I be one of those geezers who screams at kids to “get off my lawn!!” ??? But I doubt that as I doubt I’ll have a lawn - I don’t believe in lawns and would rather have a garden. Maybe I’ll scream “get off my rock pile!”?

Oh, the irony!

It gets worse. He posted the same Planned Parenthood video that he posted on his website — the same one that he was subpoena’ed about. I predict either the video or the page will be gone in short order.

Plus, there’s one of his usual long-winded beg-athons praising himself and promising to be careful stewards of the money. As noted, he’s raised $10 of the $10,000 goal so far.

$10K won’t be nearly enough.

re: #97 The War TARDIS

I blocked one of my cousins last year after Ferguson, when it became clear he was going uphold the proud family tradition of being an ignorant racist. Don’t even think twice about it. Right call.

Hot off the press:

BREAKING: Chuck Johnson begs for money on ‘social justice warrior’ website

After mocking “social justice warriors” as part of his short-lived Twitter career, blogger Award Winning JournalistTM is using generosity.com to solicit $10,000 for his legal defense fund.

His own $10 donation is the only one so far.

Other campaigns at the indiegogo.com affiliate include medical care for unfortunate people, lunches for foster kids, support of a Hispanic family left fatherless, and help for Syrian refugees in Lesbos, Greece. Were he still on Twitter, Johnson would probably be mocking all of these as misguided efforts by “liberals” and “SJWs.”

Johnson is embroiled in a heated lawsuit between the National Abortion Federation (NAF) and the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) over a series of misleading videos CMP produced to attack Planned Parenthood. Johnson published some of that material on his website, GotNewsDotCom (which is not us).

Quite coincidentally, Johnson is a college buddy of CMP officer David Daleiden.

His Facebook posts, his mindless attacks on people on his website (Pauley Perrette was allegedly attacked by a (white) homeless guy, and Chuck sides with the homeless dude!), and his blatant disregard for his own legal exposure are not helping his case at all.

To be frank, if he really wanted to stand on CA’s shield law, he should just go ahead and publish more of the videos, instead of this half-assed duck-and-cover from the subpoena. Deb, Have the prices for coverage shot up? If you haven’t noticed we have a LGF member that is not happy about coverage going up 23% this year. Is that happening all over?

Well, the person I am speaking about is thinking it is the largest increase they have ever seen. I get the feeling they feel like they have been lied to by the whole program.

Of course, one of the things that hasn’t helped is all the reluctance and fighting from the Republicans. If there were more people ‘allowed’ to have access to the program it probably would be a lot more successful, just like any insurance pooling of people.

Didn’t Carson come up with a plan weeks ago to monitor college instructors for suspect speech?

Yup. He did. GOP small government in action.

Government so small it fits into college classrooms to make sure that you’re saying the right things - Comrade.

Government so small it fits up in the lady bits to make sure that they’re not fornicating except to make babies.

Government so small that they want a massive network to watch over everyone to make sure that they’re engaging in approved speech/conduct.

Government so responsible and responsive to the Constitution that they’d shutter mosques and seek to deny certain religious groups the right to be in political office.

Everywhere you turn, the GOP is shredding the constitution with their proposals - to thunderous applause no less. The GOP is looking to expand the reach of government into places it should never go and to regulate conduct and speech it has no right to regulate.

Oh, all while slashing and burning the safety net and tax structure to shift tax burdens from the rich to everyone else.

Yeah that makes sense, especially if you are considering people that never had insurance before, or up until very recently.

Ben Carson (or someone in his campaign) has penned an opinion piece for the Washington Post titled: My plan to defeat the Islamic State.

Carson: There’s a great article in the Wash Post about what we should do about ISIS.

Staffer: Yes, sir, you wrote it.

Carson: I did?

Staffer: Well, we did, sir, and submitted it to the Post under your name.

Carson: Great, let’s do more of that.

Sorry if I’m late to the party on this but according to Yahoo! news, the so-called architect of the Paris attacks is dead:

Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins’ office said 27-year-old Abdelhamid Abaaoud was identified based on skin samples, but authorities did not know how he died. His body was found in the apartment building targeted in the chaotic and bloody raid in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis on Wednesday.

But this guy has apparently faked his death before, so we’ll see.

Come to think of it, I don’t see much coverage in the media about the ACA. I don’t know if that is good or bad.

I’m sure the prices are climbing—medical costs have been the driver in the recent bump in inflation. Structural problems are certainly involved, like the loss of some of the smaller cooperatives, but the main push is the insurance market reasserting itself for its own reasons. Not hearing about Obamacare is probably a good thing as it normalizes.

Don’t discount the orchestrated agitprop that’s very obvious on the RW warsites.

re: #232 Decatur Deb

I’m in an employer health care plan, and this year’s premiums are all of 1% more than last year. That’s after 6-8% jumps each of the past few years before that.

The range in premium increases varies tremendously across the nation - and even within some insurers. It depends on too many factors to count, but insurers who are in the marketplaces are trying to cover costs for their basic plans that they may have issued at a discount last year, so those are seeing bigger increases than other plans that may actually see declines.

The best advice for someone looking to buy on the individual marketplace is to shop around as the plans and costs will vary greatly. You can find that the cheapest plan last year saw a double digit increase this year, but a competing plan turns out to be less.

As for knowing what doctors are in/out of network, it’s a game every single insurer plays - and has been playing for years.

I’m sure over time there will be plenty of research into health insurance costs and how the ACA has affected them. Yeah, I know, that doesn’t help people today.

I do think it’s wrong to assume that without the ACA that health insurance costs wouldn’t have risen just as much.

That situation is one that the state helped screw not only Health Republic, but other insurers who have had to take up the slack. The state let HR undercut the market with premiums that didn’t reflect market conditions - all to gain market share, and when they had people who were sicker than they accounted for, they couldn’t pay out their claims by late this year.

That’s not necessarily a failure of ACA, but of greedy insurers who figured that they knew better than the market and thought they could corner the market with underpriced plans, but lost that bet in a big way.

re: #116 CuriousLurker

The “al” in Arabic is the article “the”. I’m not sure why the first part is “Da” as Dawlah is the only word with an “a” sound near the beginning—the second word is al-Islamiyyah, which has a short “e” sound (or “i” sound, depending on the transliteration).

That’s where the acronym comes in. They aren’t using the sounds, just the literal letters (dal, alif, ayn, shin). It’s literally ISIS in Arabic, doesn’t mean anything more or less. The idea it means to trample or crush is confusing it with another word that is dal ayn siin (دعس).

That said, “Iraq” starts with the letter ‘ayn (as does the word “Arabic” itself), whose pronunciation confounds most non-native speakers, including yours truly.

Then there are the diacritical marks and something like 13 pronouns. Fun, huh? Between the difficulty of pronouncing some letters and the complexity of the grammar, you guys can see why I never learned it fluently. Simply learning to read & write it was the best I could do.

“The two students who were involved were identified and an immediate investigation was conducted,” Allen wrote. “From the school’s investigation, it was determined that no specific threat was made in the incident. The school system is continuing to investigate the matter, and is implementing disciplinary consequences.”

Allen added that the school would “not tolerate behavior intended to bully, harass or intimidate others on our campuses.”

HA! You think he’s walking that back after running up the flag of xenophobia/racism/nativism, in which he’s actually calling for a GOP shutdown over the refugee issue?

Let me go one further - when faced with questions about his mosque closure statement, he doubled down - he didn’t withdraw the clearly unconstitutional notion, but thought his initial statement didn’t go far enough.

This is what folks continue to miss, trying to appeal to the better angels of the GOP and conservatism in this country: assholes like Trump are flourishing, because this is what their audience WANTS. It’s what the audience is begging for, and they’re getting it in spades now. There’s no ‘electoral consequence’ for them saying this shit, because the rise in the polls IS their electoral consequence. The fawning media coverage IS their electoral consequence. They say this not just because they can get away with it, but are being rewarded, consistently, for saying it.

Virginia town hall meeting descends into chaos as anti-Muslim bigots scream insults

Samer Shalaby, a civil engineer and member of the Islamic Center of Fredericksburg, was discussing plans the new worship center at a Spotsylvania County meeting, on property the Muslim community owns, WUSA9 reports.

Video of the meeting shows a burly man yelling and pointing his finger at Shalaby.

“Every one of you are terrorists, I don’t care what you say,” he yells. “Every Muslim is a terrorist.”

He also tells Shalaby, “Shut your mouth. I don’t want to hear your mouth. I will do everything that I can do to keep you from doing what you’re doing. It will happen. That will happen.”

Another American flag and hat-wearing man is also seen yelling and pointing at Shalaby, who is holding a poster board with a building outline.

“This is evil,” the man shouts.

To common sense Americans, they are still unthinkable today. Unfortunately, Trump supporters have been proven to lack common sense.

That could actually work. Because if, God save us, Trump was the nominee and there was a major terrorist attack anywhere in the Western world within two weeks of the general election, then I really do feel he would defeat Hillary Clinton and become president.

Disclaimer: I do not, repeat not, want Donald Trump as president. And even in that scenario, I hope I would be brave enough to vote against him.

You’d be like the people in Kentucky. “I know he’s going to destroy this country, but, in the end, I’m a Republican.” And just remember, the second half of that sentence is directly quoted from a voter in Kentucky who is dependent on healthcare to take care of her family, and yet she voted for the guy who ran on ending it.

I need to get a copy of Sinclair Lewis’s “It Can’t Happen Here”:

In 1936 Senator Berzelius “Buzz” Windrip, a charismatic and power-hungry politician, wins the election as President of the United States on a populist platform, promising to restore the country to prosperity and greatness, and promising each citizen $5,000 a year (approximately $90,000, adjusted for inflation[1]). Portraying himself as a champion of traditional American values, Windrip easily defeats his opponents, Senator Walt Trowbridge and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Though having previously foreshadowed some authoritarian measures in order to reorganize the United States government, Windrip rapidly outlaws dissent, incarcerates political enemies in concentration camps, and trains and arms a paramilitary force called the Minute Men, who terrorize citizens and enforce the policies of Windrip and his “corporatist” regime. One of his first acts as president is to eliminate the influence of the United States Congress, which draws the ire of many citizens as well as the legislators themselves. The Minute Men respond to protests against Windrip’s decisions harshly, attacking demonstrators with bayonets. In addition to these actions, Windrip’s administration, known as the “Corpo” government, curtails women’s and minority rights, and eliminates individual states by subdividing the country into administrative sectors. The government of these sectors is managed by “Corpo” authorities, usually prominent businessmen or Minute Men officers. Those accused of crimes against the government appear before kangaroo courts presided over by “military judges”. Despite these dictatorial (and “quasi-draconian”) measures, a majority of Americans approve of them, seeing them as necessary though painful steps to restore American power. Others, those less enthusiastic about the prospect of corporatism, reassure themselves that fascism cannot “happen here”; hence the novel’s title.

Franklin  Nov 19, 2015 • 8:16:20am

Tear jerker of the day, email from Elizabeth Warren regarding the Syrian Refugees:

Edit: Decided to post the whole thing, I’m sure the Senator won’t mind:

Over the past four years, millions of people have fled their homes in Syria, running for their lives. In recent months, the steady stream of refugees has been a flood that has swept across Europe.

Every day, refugees set out on a journey hundreds of miles, from Syria to the Turkish coast. When they arrive, human smugglers charge them $1000 a head for a place on a shoddy, overloaded, plastic raft that is given a big push and floated out to sea, hopefully toward one of the Greek islands.

Last month, I visited the Greek island of Lesvos to see the Syrian refugee crisis up close. Lesvos is only a few miles away from the Turkish coast, but the risks of crossing are immense. This is a really rocky, complicated shoreline – in and out, in and out. The overcrowded, paper-thin smuggler rafts are tremendously unsafe, especially in choppy waters or when a storm picks up.

Parents try their hardest to protect their children. They really do. Little ones are outfitted with blow up pool floaties as a substitute for life jackets, in the hope that if the rafts go down, a $1.99 pool toy will be enough to save the life of a small child.

And the rafts do go down. According to some estimates, more than 500 people have died crossing the sea from Turkey to Greece so far this year. But despite the clear risks, thousands make the trip every day.

I met with the mayor of Lesvos, who described how his tiny island of 80,000 people has struggled to cope with those refugees who wash ashore – more than 100,000 people in October alone. Refugees pile into the reception centers, overflowing the facilities, sleeping in parks, or at the side of the road. Recently, the mayor told a local radio program that the island had run out of room to bury the dead.

On my visit, I met a young girl – younger than my own granddaughters – sent out on this perilous journey alone. I asked her how old she was, and she shyly held up seven fingers.

I wondered what could possibly possess parents to hand a seven-year-old girl and a wad of cash to human smugglers. What could possibly possess them to send a beloved child across the treacherous seas with nothing more than a pool floatie. What could make them send a child knowing that crime rings of sex slavery and organ harvesting prey on these children.

Send a little girl out alone. With only the wildest, vaguest, most wishful hope that she might make it through alive and find something – anything – better for her on the other side.

This week, we all know why parents would send a child on that journey. Last week’s massacres in Paris and Beirut made it clear. The terrorists of ISIS – enemies of Islam and of all modern civilization, butchers who rape, torture and execute women and children, who blow themselves up in a lunatic effort to kill as many people as possible – these terrorists have spent years torturing the people of Syria. Day after day, month after month, year after year, mothers, fathers, children and grandparents are slaughtered.

In the wake of the murders in Paris and Beirut last week, people in America, in Europe, and throughout the world, are fearful. Millions of Syrians are fearful as well – terrified by the reality of their daily lives, terrified that their last avenue of escape from the horrors of ISIS will be closed, terrified that the world will turn its back on them and on their children.

Some politicians have already moved in that direction, proposing to close our country to people fleeing the massacre in Syria. That is not who we are. We are a country of immigrants and refugees, a country made strong by our diversity, a country founded by those crossing the sea fleeing religious persecution and seeking religious freedom.
We are not a nation that delivers children back into the hands of ISIS murderers because some politician dislikes their religion. And we are not a nation that backs down out of fear.

Our first responsibility is to protect this country. We must embrace that fundamental obligation. But we do not make ourselves safer by ignoring our common humanity and turning away from our moral obligation.

ISIS has shown itself to the world. We cannot – and we will not – abandon the people of France to this butchery. We cannot – and we will not – abandon the people of Lebanon to this butchery. And we cannot – and we must not – abandon the people of Syria to this butchery.

Thank you for being a part of this,
Elizabeth—-

If he’s nominated he gets 27% of the popular vote. He will finally drive a stake through the heart of the TPGOP.

On one side of my logical brain I agree. The other side of my logical brain sees a celebrity bringing out people who normally wouldn’t vote but damn, how cool would it be to vote for Mr Apprentice! Coupled with the fact that dems can often not be bothered to vote, gerrymandering, voter suppression and my two logical brain sides cannot see any certainty in the outcome of 2016.

All the work the GOP did to make sure the wrong people couldn’t vote are going to get fucked by their own hands. They created, fed and seethed the bagger masses. Now those chickens are not just roosting but breeding and growing.

I hope Trump does blow up the GOP. Into fractional pieces that cannot be put back together. Ever.

No one is forcing insurers to providing policies into the individual marketplace, so they’re contemplating withdrawing because they’re not making enough money in that segment.

And that’s why I sympathize with socialism. You can’t tell me that these guys work that much more harder than I do.

I have a lot of respect for what CEOs do. It’s not an easy job. You’re responsible for the success of the company even when many aspects of that success are beyond your control.

But I don’t respect them 300 times more than the average worker. We used to be sensible about this, so that it was more like 30 times. When a CEO is making more than twice median ANNUAL income EVERY DAY, we’ve lost our sense of how to determine the value of things.

Right, absolutely. I would never act like it’s just golf, cigars, and scotch for these guys but it’s a problem when the CEO makes twice median annual income on a daily basis IMO. The other problem is while CEO salaries have gone up big time, worker pay is pretty stagnant.

That was the value of the old 90% tax bracket on the highest incomes, It effectively capped salaries, because there is no point in giving someone a raise if 90 cents out of every dollar goes right to the government.

Absolutely. That probably is what angers me the most. If your company is profiting fine, by all means but when they fuck up these companies and still walk away with a pretty penny. I also would like them to stop complaining about their taxes too. If I made over a million in a year, the last thing I’d complain about is my tax bracket.

The problem with dealing with groups like the GOP and ISIS is this: You can’t stop everything, but most people’s immediate reaction is to blame people who said we’d be fine. All it would take is one person setting off a bomb for every Democrat to be in trouble.

I personally haven’t figured out how to change people’s minds. Obama’s trying. I want as many refugees here as we can get. I just don’t know how to convince the majority of the people that you can’t live in fear.

Two Syrian families turn themselves in at Texas border town

Members of two Syrian families had turned themselves in to U.S. authorities in Laredo, Texas, at the Mexican border, and were being processed by immigration officials, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said on Thursday.

Two men, two women and four children who “presented themselves” Tuesday at the port of entry were taken into custody by Border Patrol agents and then turned over for immigration processing, DHS said in a statement.

“Due to privacy issues, no additional information will be provided at this time,” DHS said in a statement.

Still, there was no evidence the Syrians had any connection to terrorism, U.S. government officials said on condition of anonymity.

The women and children were taken to the South Texas Family Residential Center in the city of Dilley, DHS said, while the two men were held at the South Texas Detention Center in the city of Pearsall.

There was no indication the two Syrian families were trying to sneak into the country.

Hatred is the mind killer.

Either that or he’s thinking of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 where the Muslim troops rebelled over the cartridges being lubricated with pork fat and assumes Muslims will be terrified of being shot with “contaminated” bullets. The key difference here is that the Muslim troops had to tear off the covers of the cartridges with their teeth, thus voluntarily ingesting pork, as opposed to being quite involuntarily being shot with a pork-containing product.

Nuance. How does that work?

Time to go do something constructive.

GOP priorities:

That’s in the Senate - not the House.

The list of priorities that the GOP has is certainly one out of tune with reality, where the priorities should be on producing an AUMF against IS, but instead, they’re demanding action on Syrian refugees now.

What did Williams say?

It seems that Williams is the one who gave the Times the name of the “advisor” that was center in the piece on Carson’s ignorance on foreign policy
Ben Carson confidant: Here’s the real story behind that bombshell NYT report

The Times sent Business Insider a statement from senior politics editor Carolyn Ryan, who points to Williams as the source of the Clarridge interview.

“It was Ben Carson’s closest adviser, Armstrong Williams, who recommended that we talk to Mr. Clarridge and described Mr. Clarridge as a ‘mentor’ to Mr. Carson on foreign policy,” Ryan said in the statement. “Mr. Williams also gave us Mr. Clarridge’s phone number. Mr. Clarridge picked up the phone and our reporter, Trip Gabriel, conducted a very straightforward interview with him.”

Ryan added: “Mr. Clarridge was the only adviser whose name was given to us by Armstrong Williams.”

Number of Americans Killed by Gun Violence Vs. Terrorism Shows Stark Contrast

Well, here are the numbers, and they’re pretty stark:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 153,144 people were killed by homicide in which firearms were used between 2001 and 2013, the last year that data are available (that number excludes deaths by “legal intervention”).
The Global Terrorism Database — which uses a criteria to determine terrorist attacks but also includes acts of violence that are more ambiguous in goal — estimates that 3,046 people in the U.S. died in terrorist or possible terrorist attacks between 2001 and 2014.

(If I’m reading this correctly)For the 7 of the states reporting —there have been just over 2000 IPV violent deaths from 2003-2013. I selected “all reporting states” in the query.
