GOP Debate Thread 1: The Kiddie Klown Kar

Politics • Views: 52,019

The Fox News GOP kiddie table debate is about to begin, with Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum. Rand Paul threw a tantrum and decided to take his ball and go home, but the other three piled into the clown car and they’re getting ready to square off, if you can call saying exactly the same things on every subject “squaring off.”

You can watch this debacle, I mean debate, on the web here.

I folded during the last debate, for lack of proper preparation. Will use this hour to collect nutritious food, strong drink, and out-of-date painkillers from the back of my sock drawer.

I’ve enacted the same policy against watching GOP debates that I have against snuff films. A person should guard themselves from staring into the abyss, exposing their brain and soul so much awful darkness.

Greetings from the air, glad there is no way to watch this debate here. Getting on board proved a bit more stressful with United forcing people to line up in groups, but no problem.

The real debate tonight is being recorded at my destination, so will be able to zip through that dreck to see if there are any fireworks. I will be surprised if there are.

One thing about the Navy/Iran thing that struck me - invariably, the wingnuts making a stink refer to Iran as our enemy. Allan West went on about how you don’t surrender to an enemy, etc., while others of course go on about how weak we are, letting an enemy do this to us.

But the thing is, if THEY are OUR enemy, then WE are THEIR enemy, and who would let any enemy craft enter their territorial waters and not respond? Do they imagine we were EVER so feared that any adversary would not do AT LEAST what Iran did?

re: #72 Backwoods_Sleuth

Huckabee: “I purchase guns, and I can assure you [it’s] more difficult to purchase a firearm than it is to get the ingredients for a salad.”

As John Cole at Balloon Juice put so well back in 2009:

I really don’t understand how bipartisanship is ever going to work when one of the parties is insane. Imagine trying to negotiate an agreement on dinner plans with your date, and you suggest Italian and she states her preference would be a meal of tire rims and anthrax. If you can figure out a way to split the difference there and find a meal you will both enjoy, you can probably figure out how bipartisanship is going to work the next few years.

That’s spot on. Hell some of the more honest Republicans admit their idea of bipartisanship is the Dems giving in completely to what they want. Honestly, we got one party who has its flaws but lives in reality.Meanwhile the other party wants to take us back to an America that never has existed.

The “undercard” debates exist not only to sell more advertising, but also to avoid the headache of choosing between having all 13 on one stage or dealing with complaints that the candidates excluded weren’t getting “equal air time.” The networks likely don’t want to have to argue that the debates are anything but long infomercials for the various candidates.

But that decision itself was arbitrary, as shown by leaving off Gilmore.

The choice of who gets on stage was always about getting only the most popular on stage. But after Feb 1 it will be clear that some of these current folk will follow Graham and Pataki off the campaign trail.

Are the post Feb 1 undercard debates only going to have two people? Because that is what it will come down to when Huckabee leaves, which he promised to do if he doesn’t do well in Iowa.

This is beyond double-speak.

“In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy.”

Carly can’t even negotiate her way out of the GOP undercard. She’s out of her league, and the sole issue on which she runs - her business experience - is one that would ordinarily disqualify anyone from running.

She attempted to run two legendary companies into the ground - Lucent (the former Bell Labs) and HP. She nearly succeeded in both cases because her business judgment was atrocious. But thanks to a golden parachute she ended up doing better than the thousands who lost their job due to her mismanagement.

I found out that my sister is one of those this week. At Christmas, I walked in on my sisters having a conversation about ‘women’s issues’ and they said I probably wouldn’t want to listen. I made a joke about Trump calling Hillary ‘disgusting’ and then tried to end the conversation (I’d promised myself that I wouldn’t bring up anything political).
My sister emailed me last week to demand that I explain why I hated straight women so much. She apparently hates Hillary so badly that making any kind of connection to Hillary and other women is a slap in the face to all straight women. This was her actual argument. She was mortified to be lumped in with Hillary as a woman. She thinks Hillary should be in jail.
I finally got her to apologize today. She kind of confirmed that she had written it while drunk, but she still stands by her compete and utter hatred of Hillary.
I was going to tell her to quit watching Fox News, but I decided to quit while I was ahead.

Instead of watching the debate, I participated in an act of humanity.

There was a knock on the door, and the woman on the other side spoke very little English. I speak even less Chinese. Thanks to Google translate and a phone call to a friend, however, she was able to tell me that her car had run out of gas. We happen to have a tank, so off to the gas station and $5 later, she had enough gas that her car would start again. Hopefully she is off to get more right away.

I declined her offer of payment and wished her luck, as she’s apparently recently over to study English.

I use the Logitech trackman Marble Mouse. You basically use your middle 2 fingers and thumb for a mouse click on left side and your pinky on the right.

Mine is so old the USB is getting rusty. Takes a bit of time but so worth it. Not only the wrist, but I have found it helps the whole arm.

Would never go back and in fact, I struggle with a normal mouse

I’ve used a trackball for many years. I switch between that, at home, mice at work, plus touchpad and screens, and haven’t had wrist, or even any RSI, problems in 30+ years of using a computer.

It helps to make the pointer movement as sensitive as you can get, even if it seems twitchy. You’ll get used to it and the economy of motion will save your wrist. You’ll use the fingertips to move the ball.

Kensington is the only major manufacturer of trackballs left.

Dobbs and company really jumping on bashing the SC governor.

Haley really didn’t recognize the nest of vipers into which she was stepping.

Au contraire, IMO. Nikki is a viper of the first order, and she made a very calculated move. Now, it may not work out as she anticipated/hoped, but she did it to advance her national recognition and show she’ll play nice with the party big boys.

The past has a habit of showing up in new clothes. Just move the creed and the names around and this is Trump and the GOP’s vision for us all. Immigrants, religion, nativists…. All over again.
Just keep in mind that picture listening to these illustrious grifting con men and women.

Heh. I love footnotes in old books sometimes.

Reading a scanned hardcopy print of _The Early Norman Castles of the British Isles_. Originally published in 1912, and the original that was scanned appears to have at one time been in the Cornell library.

Footnote concerns how a certain castle’s name was entered in the Domesday book:

“We need not resort to any fanciful British origins of the name Peneverdant, as it is clearly the effort of a Norman scribe to write down the unpronounceable English name Penwortham.”

Something like that.

All I can really hope for is that every time one of these nuts takes the rhetoric to “11” at least a few people blink, say “what?” and do a reassessment of what they are listening to and being fed. And, perhaps too slowly unfortunately, the insanity tide will start to recede as the support falls away in dribs and drabs.
