I’m not promoting either candidate’s talking points. I was simply surprised to hear Bernie Sanders suddenly disclaim free tuition for all.

I’m getting barraged by Sanders supporters insisting he never meant to say free tuition for all.
Of @SenSanders $75B plan for free public college tuition, $30B a year comes from the states. Will your state foot the bill?

Texas lege says prolly not.
re: #4 Charles Johnson

I thought that was the whole point.
We could use a good conversation on how to pay for college. Like most of the people around me, it should also include paying for thing like HVAC schools. We definitely should have a discussion like we did over health care in 2008, which I think led to the ACA.
Now, here’s how I suspect the national conversation over paying for college will go:
President Clinton/Sanders: Here’s a detailed plan for paying for college for everyone. It’s revenue neutral.
Republicans: Democrats are trying to make every student learn evolution and turn into godless liberals!

Same with the Virginia legislature. Republicans and many Democrats here are scared of the dreaded “T” word: Taxes.

South Carolina? Hah. Gotta give you an upding for using a Bakari tweet. I love that guy!
(And, as I might have mentioned, the first time I heard him speak, I thought—this is how people must have felt the first time they heard Obama speak.)
Anyhow as I said downstairs, I like what he’s said in the past is the end goal- free and affordable college tuition for all Americans. I love that idea. I was blessed to get the education I did. But with so many goals it’s not a matter of what but rather how.

He was pretty clear at the town hall. He is still saying free tuition for public universities and colleges. So basically he is saying if you want to go to UMASS Amherst, tuition is covered, if you want to go to Harvard, good luck you’re on your own. I don’t think that is inconsistent with anything he has said.
Plus, I’ll give you another reason Texas won’t pay: They’d have to let blacks into college.
It’s really annoying that every criticism of Sanders is met with a barrage of angry supporters.
— Charles Johnson (@Green_Footballs) March 14, 2016
In the last thread I said I had heard a commercial from the National Nurses Association. They are actually called National Nurses United.
I just found their web site, and they are in Ohio right now. It makes complete sense to me this is the organization I heard in the radio commercial say Free College. Why? Because right on their web site is this:
National Nurses United Endorses Senator Bernie Sanders for President
4. MAKE COLLEGE TUITION AND DEBT FREE
Bernie Sanders introduced a bill to make all public colleges and universities tuition free, paid for by a tax on Wall Street speculation. He proposes slashing student loan interest rates.
Obviously this is confusing…it says free and also slashing student loans. Gotta tighten this up.
From Sanders’ website:
Here are the six steps that Bernie will take as President to make college debt free:
MAKE TUITION FREE AT PUBLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
This is not a radical idea. Last year, Germany eliminated tuition because they believed that charging students $1,300 per year was discouraging Germans from going to college. Next year, Chile will do the same. Finland, Norway, Sweden and many other countries around the world also offer free college to all of their citizens. If other countries can take this action, so can the United States of America.
In fact, it’s what many of our colleges and universities used to do. The University of California system offered free tuition at its schools until the 1980s. In 1965, average tuition at a four-year public university was just $243 and many of the best colleges - including the City University of New York - did not charge any tuition at all. The Sanders plan would make tuition free at public colleges and universities throughout the country.
So if we’re going to be nit pickers about it, he’s saying it will be free for everyone who gets accepted into a public college, i.e. it’s free.
BTW, I went to the University of CA in the 1970s and it most certainly wasn’t free. It was cheap, but not free. Community colleges back then were tuition free.
re: #14 danarchy

Then I’m no longer confused. That does make sense.
re: #16 Charles Johnson
It’s the anger that’s most annoying. We need to ratchet down the emotions, not ratchet them up. Disagreement is fine …
I think we all remember the ACA fight to know how such a thing would go. The GOP would fight the bill tooth and nail, leaving Bernie with no choice but to obtain support for it from Blue Dog Dems who’d demand various amendments and changes in order to secure their votes. Then assuming they could get it to his desk, the real fight would begin as wingnut lawyers and politicians would immediately begin crafting cases with an eye to taking the matter to SCOTUS with the hopes of getting the entire thing struck down. In the mean time, red states across the nation would begin looking for ways to ratfk the new law into uselessness, including denying funding or only allowing funding for certain institutions while denying it to others.
Same deal with…well, pretty much everything Bernie has proposed.

but he sure as hell implied it, even though his original point was that PUBLIC universities (not community colleges) will be free. But we don’t have national public universities, as far as I know. And control of the budget is in the hands of GOP-controlled state governments that have cut the fuck out of public education. He still has a lot of explaining to do.
re: #18 Skip Intro
I got my start at a community college and it helped me get into a 4 year university. I think it is a wonderful idea to have free college.
I’ll bring up something again that I brought up downstairs but I’d like to see more investment into community colleges. I think the community college system is properly funded can really do a lot of good. I was a transfer student from one when I got into GMU.

re: #7 Belafon
What many GOP/TP politicians and supporters will conveniently forget is that the GOP/TP governor and majority in Tennessee has already passed a law giving qualified students two years of tuition-free community college. If they start saying what you and I think they’ll say, they should be reminded of this. They are some very strange individuals because things they once supported, if a democrat suggests doing it, they’re hellbent on making sure it doesn’t get any support from them. It’s party over country and citizens every d*mn time. All of the GOP/TP republicans in Congress knew that Romney developed Romneycare in Massachusetts, and the plan was working rather well, but when Romney ran in 2012, they all forgot that Obamacare is very similar to Romneycare and began with the gloom and doom pronouncements.

Help me here.
The Art College I went to is probably now about $20,000 thousand a year, or more. That would not be covered obviously as it is private. If that is the case, I so hope they can get loan rates way down and also drum up more scholarships. I know from the type of background I came from, I would never have been able to go at these kinds of rates.
Yeah. The whole Education System in the country needs a complete redo. Talk about infrastructure.

GInsberg has stated that it might be time for a new Constitution to be done, pointing Canada’s, South Africa’s, or the European Convention on Human Rights as being superior to the current US one.
Fewer new constitutions are modeled along the lines of the American version, according to a study by David Law of Washington University.[26] Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg views the United States Constitution as more of a relic of the 18th century rather than as a model for new constitutions, and she suggested in 2014 that a nation seeking a new constitution might find a better model by examining the constitutions of South Africa (1997), the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982) and the European Convention on Human Rights (1950).[26]
I would not look to the United States Constitution if I were drafting a constitution in the year 2012.

Sure is. I think we are just trying to make something clear that is not all that clear. It is why I have been saying Bernie needs to tighten some things up. If he becomes the Democratic Candidate, I want him and his campaign running like a fine machine.
That machine could be facing having people sticking bananas up the tail pipe, sugar in the gas tank and rocks thrown down the throttle body by “opposition” in the general election in November.

I do have one suggestion for an improvement. It deals with preparing a Page and the suggested Tabs. When I go to the Suggested Tab link the new search/suggestion program identifies very few suggested Tags related to the article. Usually just one or two. Also if I select a Tag it does not show up in the Tag block. It does show up when I preview the page. Sometimes I would also like to add my own Tag to the page but the system doesn’t allow it.
Can this be fixed?
And, a direct email button would be nice.

Couple of points. Free tuition at public universities and colleges does not mean there will be no more student loans, there are still many that will choose to go to private institutions.
Also Tuition is not the only cost related to going to school. Student loans may still be necessary to cover room and board and books and whatever else for full time students.

That is one of the reasons why I was attracted to O’Malley. O’Malley signed a repeal of the DP in Maryland and shocker Maryland isn’t overrun by murderers killing everyone in sight because of the lack of DP.
So, here’s a question for everyone: We know that infrastructure, health care, defense spending, and college need to be overhauled in the US. How will we get those things fixed? Will it take getting unconditionally defeated by another country, or aliens, for it to happen? How would we get there? Would it take a virus wiping out 2/3 of the whites so that they’re on par with the rest of the country?

re: #81 Charles Johnson
@Green_Footballs: My name has become a talisman that right wingers invoke to warn other right wingers not to start thinking for themselves.
Honestly for as much as I’m told that liberals are prone to emotion in their policy views. The DP is one purely based off of emotion and not logic and reasoning. It’s always “Well what if your loved one was killed?” or something like that and honestly I get that. It IS an emotional issue but law shouldn’t be emotional. When you’re talking life and death, that shouldn’t be taking precedence. Just one innocent executed is a travesty on all of us.
If we’re waiting on Congress or the states to agree to abolish the DP, then we’re going to be waiting a very long time. For example, the VA assembly just got done passing a bill that says if the state cannot get its hands on the drugs for lethal injection, then it will default to the electric chair for executions. I strongly suspect if someone determines a way to cut the power to the chair during executions, the state will seriously consider bringing back hanging next.

I think it’s because they honestly don’t realize that it’s an ineffective deterrent and is more costly than life sentences. “Common sense” would tell you that severe penalties for crimes would disincentivize committing them, but that isn’t necessarily true.

The ACA is not perfect and there are a fairly large swath of folks who get right fucked by it. My plan now has seen my premiums rise by about 50% and it is only that low because I have taken on larger and larger deductibles(up to a $4000 deductible now.)

Knowing our state, you’re absolutely right. Too many people love them the DP. It’s not just legislators. It’s zealous prosecutors trying to make their careers being “tough on crime” which really shouldn’t be the goal of a prosecutor. There’s a different between prosecuting people who violate the law and “tough on crime”, one is a noble and thankless pursuit, the other is a job interview bragging statement.

re: #93 Targetpractice
I evolved on the death penalty. I used to be for the death penalty. I now want the death penalty abolished.
Luckily in Colorado, people seem keen to the idea that the death penalty should be done for. The most encouraging news I’ve seen on that score is the Aurora movie theater shooter who is now serving a life sentence; the jury could not agree on a death sentence, of which the decision must be unanimous.
re: #87 goddamnedfrank
I think whether one’s health insurance premiums have increased quite a bit has a lot to do with the sitting governor and state lawmakers. I know here in GA, they rejected the Obamacare Medicaid expansion, then, passed law forbidding the governor to do anything about expanding Medicaid. The state’s largest newspaper, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, has reported on how GOP/TP politicians, who occupy the governor’s office and have a majority in the legislature, look out for the interests of the insurance companies. AJC reported that our own insurance commissioner is wined and dined by health insurance execs and sees no conflict in attending conferences at posh resorts and working to promote their interests over citizens’ interests. What pisses me off are the right-wingers here who whine about their health insurance rates and keep voting for pols who are denying them affordable health insurance. I’ve never witnessed so much stupid in one place in my 60+ years. There’s a total lack of ability to connect the dots between their increased healthcare premium payments and the politicians they support being the bought and paid for lackeys of insurance executives.
There are numerous reasons to eliminate the death penalty in this country. I don’t think moral superiority to a life sentence is one of them.
I am not sure that the DP is the mountain HRC should die on. She has to win the general too.

According to one “serious” wingnut I know, it’s totally a deterrent because the executed person will never offend again. What’s that you say? What if the condemned is really innocent? No system’s perfect, we just got to do the best we can to ensure that only the guilty end up on death row. And if we execute an innocent man or two, it’s okay because man more guilty men will never again walk the Earth.

Makes for a nice graphic but it is bullshit. CEO salary has next to nothing to do with healthcare costs. United Heath Care revenue for 2015 was 157 Billion dollars. Yeah the CEO is overpaid, but it is a drop in the bucket for their budget.
re: #41 20Hz
I think it is funny how we have all these arguments about how it would be so challenging to have “free” education but the resistance to wasting huge amounts of money on programs like the f 35 is met with a meh.
I’m pretty sure you have heard of the people known as conservatives. They would love to only spend taxes on the military and everything else would be up to the states. That is what they like to refer to as ‘small government’ or what is left of government after it has been drowned in their bathtub.
If you can get them to change that very fundamental conservative thinking in the next few months I am all in on everything Bernie wants to do.
I also do not see all states being able to do anything that approaches what we already have as National agencies and programs and the like. It is one of the reasons Federal Government grew.
So, Bernie and every Democrat has to face that. It is then up to everyone to judge who can get anything done at all.
It is one of the reasons I think many worry about Bernie’s plans. Do enough people really understand that Bernie can only give it his best shot in the face of the conservatives that he has to work with? To me that seems so simple, but appears to be hard for some.
I think that is why some think Hillary is more realistic and can possibly get more done because of the very things she gets criticized for. Her connections in government. Her connections to Wall Street.
Everyone needs to be real about how government works. You can ask for a revolution, but you face a good chance of being denied.
As an example. You can ask the banks you call out to change and they can give all their money to your opposition to bury you. A good chance nothing gets changed. If you are not a totally enemy of Wall Street, do you stand a better chance to work with them to get some changes?

I like that quote. As I said earlier bonus points for any candidate who can explain to the public that the DP does the opposite of save money. I mean I’d rather get it abolished for humanitarian reasons but if we can convince tight belted people that the DP is their taxdollars at work killing people maybe that could change some minds.

Assuming that there is no chance of him being rehabilitated and an in some small measure of restitution for his crime, then he needs to be isolated from society for its protection. Overheard at work this week: Someone talking about getting ready to send their son to college - Baylor University here in TX is over $60K a year?? Is that true?
I don’t know how anybody affords to go to school at all, if prices are that high for private universities. That’s fully double what an upper-tier school cost in the Boston area when I was preparing to go to school.

Hell, I went to a state school as an out of state student. By the time I finished there - and this was a public school - my tuition/room/board was up to $30,000 a year. I like the ACA but I do have two complaints. The first is that you must sign up at the beginning of the year and then start paying for it. If you qualify for a subsidy you get it as a tax credit the following year. If you’re on an extremely tight budget it’s very difficult add in an insurance payment every month. This is really tough on low income taxpayers so they don’t sign up and then get penalized at an escalating rate at tax time next year. Low income people need the subsidy directly each month to make the system operational.
The second complaint is that multi State and Regional pools need to be established to help spread the risk for smaller states. Right now, Alaska has only one insurer offering ACA insurance and the rates are climbing. Being part of a larger pool such as AK, WA, ID, and OR would help reduce the spiraling cost increases.

No, but if he can negotiate a good deal with a hospital network, or guide the company through a tricky acquisition, a good ceo can cover the cost of his salary many fold.

Thanks. I have given this issue a little bit of thought as it’s an area my opinion has fluctuated a bit over the years. I’ve never exactly been a big fan. As others have noted, racism plays a huge role in whether someone is likely to be sentenced to death. It’s also irreversible, so innocent people are killed. There’s also the issue that it makes us look barbaric to most of the rest of the planet.

About the Wall Street Tax:
Sanders has proposed something he calls a speculation tax, a small levy on every stock, bond or derivative sold in the United States.
While Hillary Clinton has proposed a similar tax on high-speed trading, Sanders’ plan would go much further. Both candidates say their tax would cut back on computer-generated, high-speed trading, which is often accused of destabilizing the markets and giving an unfair advantage to large firms.

It has it’s issues. Just think what could happen if all the government, insurance and healthcare people decided it is the law of the land and they were all going to make it work. I happen to think it would be what it was always hoped to be.

CEO wages tend to correlate strongly with company size. Whether a CEO is objectively good or bad does not seem to be as much of a factor. Absolutely atrocious CEOs can still collect massive pay packages and even more lucrative severance packages when the board finally kicks them to the curb. Alternately, many founder CEOs do amazing jobs while pulling in little compensation besides the appreciation of their own stock in the company.

This is the same deal as when a sports team signs a large contract. You do it hoping it will pay off. Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn’t, and yeah the whole CEO and Board situation is too incestuous in most industries and it leads to companies making bad decisions. There really is a pretty limited pool to pull from for managing a corporation that large though.
I know I would be about as successful at running a company with 157 Billion dollars in annual revenue as I would be at hitting a major league fast ball. I wouldn’t even know what information to ask for or who to delegate what to.

I’m mulling over going to meet someone at the Serbian Orthodox Church.
I want to meet someone who is Serbian, to see how close they are to the image I have in mind that was created from all the TV I watched when I was 4-9 years old, and the books I have read since.
re: #16 Charles Johnson
I think that is why Sanders is liked by both the young, and we 60’s somethings, who shouted ‘hey hey lbj how many kids did you kill today’, back when then was then…68? Memory failing, its just too bad McCarthy’s followers did not have the same melding of the young, and matured.

I’m 110% against death penalty. Clinton is very wrong on this one.
But IIUC it doesn’t depend on the President directly, it depends, realistically, on the SCOTUS, no? So elect someone who will put liberals on the SCOTUS and one day you may see DP abolished.
It is no longer civil disagreement based on respect of opinion, if you vote for Donald Trump I have no belief that you are a moral person.

Maybe some good news for the ocean.
I think it was in the book “The World Without Us” that the author gave a timeframe of about 250,000 years before a microorganism evolved to eat plastic. Maybe that was a pessimistic estimate.
That’s good news for pollution, but for industries that’s like finding out that all your high-tech materials are suddenly only as good as wood for durability. Imagine something rotting your phone…

I’m heartened to see more and more friends on my FB wall, even some who’d usually been very non-political, taking similar stands against creeping Trumpism.
But then I’ve already blocked a lot of people who’d be taking the opposite stance, so perhaps there’s selection bias at work here?
The last time I saw “white people out in force” it was at the mall.

Yes, it’s just part of the territory. Every piece you make, even the ones that other people love, has errors and omission glaring out of it.

++ I needed to read that right now. I’m on my third beer at 11 PM while writing a comic story and I was just describing it to a friend over text (damned distractions) and I was feeling pretty strange about my stuff.

Here is that “empurpled” again. English!

Empurpled is strange. I don’t think you can “em” any other colors.

I know, right. Sometimes I learn some new word, or a phrase, or a factoid, and then come upon it again shortly thereafter. Was it because I never noticed it before and now I do? I suppose.
PS: I also wonder why one can empurple but not emgreen or emyellow ;)

I suppose you can “emblacken”… but that’s it.
My gut feeling tells me that “em” is for b…/p…, for other cases “en”.

What does Tom Cruise do that is worth 20 million dollars for an 8 week movie shoot?
Ummmm…Tom Cruise is in the entertainment business. It is not a fundamental issue of life. You can choose to see his movie or not. Healthcare is a necessity. These salaries are are obscene.
Not to defend sports and entertainment money, I think that is obscene as well, but it is a choice, not life and death.

From Sanders’ website:
So if we’re going to be nit pickers about it, he’s saying it will be free for everyone who gets accepted into a public college, i.e. it’s free.
BTW, I went to the University of CA in the 1970s and it most certainly wasn’t free. It was cheap, but not free. Community colleges back then were tuition free.
I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984 and my tuition for my last semester (a full load of classes) was $212.50. The books cost more. I graduated from law school five years later, and tuition was a relatively measly $75/hour. Currently it’s $930/hour. I can’t even imagine going to law school (or undergraduate) today.
re: #258 Nyet
Yeah, I know. It just struck me as funny if you didn’t think about it too much. It’s a thing with some Americans, so many of whom are monolingual; speaking more than one language can make you seem suspicious to them. I’m talking about the kind of people who say “Ay-rab” and “Eye-ranian” and “Messkin” (i.e. Trump supporters).

There was probably already one out there that had a mechanism for breaking down and eating complex hydrocarbon chains. Question is how many adaptions were necessary in order to it to work on PET. And how often the mutation leading to that cropped up. Could be more common than we thought, but it was never of much advantage until the supply of PET “in the wild” increased significantly.

Iy’s what can happen when people aren’t compelled to go after the other side in order to placate party activists and motivate their voter base. Supreme Court justices can have cross-ideological friendships of a kind that have become very hard for elected officials.

Here in Louisiana, we gave away so many business tax incentives that the state now collects negative revenue from its business tax.

It wasn’t always that way. At least in all cases. I realize there were times when people beat or shot each other. I just keep hoping we can find our better angels, somewhere, somehow.

Wonder if they’ll force miners to appear with Mittens like they did before.
When GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney visited an Ohio coal mine this month to promote jobs in the coal industry, workers who appeared with him at the rally lost pay because their mine was shut down.
The Pepper Pike company that owns the Century Mine told workers that attending the Aug. 14 Romney event would be both mandatory and unpaid, a top company official said Monday morning in a West Virginia radio interview.

When the Bernies disdain Clinton’s Third Way in 1992, think of 1972, the one-term Jimmy Carter, Reagan, then Mondale losing in a landslide, then the Dukakis horror show — and slick Willie did find a way to get some sanity in there. The Republican party hadn’t totally occluded in Breitbartism yet. The Bush Bush again. We all know what happened then. Obama created the new, multi-ethnic coalition, and it has to keep going. It was just a matter of time until Trump’s followers went from misogyny, racism, Islamophobia, and anti-immigrant bigotry to naked antisemitism. I wish I could say I’m shocked, but I saw it coming months ago.
I’m sure most Jews aren’t surprised either, at least not the ones smart enough to know that they were being used and that there’s a certain element that will always consider them to be “other” (no matter how much they assimilate or how much the Christian far-right claims to love them).
