It will be interesting to see if shortly after January 20th groups of government lawyers take on Trump and start to file challenges that he is operating against the dictates of the U.S. Constitution.

The issue then will be the courts and how they react.

You would hope the Courts would be more than eager to protect The Constitution but I wonder if Trump can get enough judges in place to make that tough to do.

I always thought a judge would look at that document and feel a strong need to do all in their power to look after it. Of course judges should be impartial and all that, but I am fresh out of assurance that is true.

I always thought we would never see a President as unfit for the job.

What we are going to see is a President that might lead to an actual Constitutional crisis that makes Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky look like a kiddie play and Watergate/Nixon a High School drama.

I worked on the the 2010 census in south-central Indiana. A lot of my work was in nursing homes, so that was not too hard except for the dementia patients who weren’t already on the Alzheimer’s/Dementia ward. But the worst was going out into the “hollers.” I had lived there for years and had been a hardcore cyclist who rode those back roads, but on the census I got off those back roads and was a bit frightened. Lots of signs and unleashed dogs. I always thought there was a chance I’d take a bullet.

In the county seat we have a steakhouse, a Mexican restaurant, a burger joint and an ice cream shop.

Sixty miles south in Sidney, there are several diners, two Chinese restaurants (one run by Cambodian immigrants the other by Chinese immigrants), a Greek restaurant, and several fast food restaurants.

Sixty miles west in Scottsbluff, there are several good Mexican restaurants, several sit-down family dining restaurants, and a couple fast food places.

Proponents of the death penalty trying to assuage themselves by claiming they are concerned about liberals’ concerns will say things like “well, we can reserve it for only those who are convicted without a shadow of a doubt.”

Such “no shadow of doubt” cases have been overturned before. (For example, Trump’s hobby horse, the Central Park Five.)

They will also assuage themselves by claiming liberals are opposed to the death penalty because “brutal methods are used” (such as hanging or electrocution). Nope, opposed to the death penalty, not the method used. (I get the idea they are trying to rationalise killing people to themselves, not me.)

Unfortunately here, the state governor paid to circulate a petition to put the death penalty on the ballot to overturn the Unicameral repealing it then overriding his veto. The referendum passed (narrowly), so as of January 1, it is back in force.

I sometimes bite off more than I can chew in an argument. And while the central point of Steve’s argument was mathematical (Dems need more votes), he wasn’t able to address such things as voter suppression. So that could only mean appealing to those voters who could vote mostly unmolested; whites, IOW. I was a bit inflexible there too.
Hence the embarrassment.
I was a kid when I marched in Brisbane against the Iraq war, then in its second year.
If my government decides to throw its lot in with Trump (a distinct possibility) I’ll be doing what I can on this side of the pond.

Nope. Fleet would sail out of port. Any nuclear missiles on land would be secured, sabotaged by the military if necessary to prevent them from falling into the hands of terrorists.

And it only takes ONE US Navy ship today to wreak havoc on California. Not a fantasy.

One aircraft carrier and its ninety aircraft can strike hundreds of miles inside a nation’s coast. Got an air force and navy to oppose it? Nope.

Water mines laid over only a few minutes ends any shipment capability from California’s ports, until the California minesweeper force can get out there and get all the mines out. (Oh wait, California doesn’t own any minesweepers.)

Submarines from the US fleet can torpedo incoming or outgoing commercial shipping, until the anti-submarine forces of California can hunt and kill them. (Oh wait, California doesn’t have anti-submarine forces in its state militia, does it.)

At least on the Naval installations I was on, we had contingency plans to destroy and deny an enemy the use of the installation or its facilities should it fall into enemy hands: That would include buildings, airfields, hangers, aircraft, equipment, fuel dumps, ordinance dumps, &c. The US Government would absolutely view a rebellious force as an enemy force.

Moreover, a declaration of secession is all it would take to declare the state in rebellion and its leaders traitors. You don’t think conservatives would not do that, or would they just want to sit in Sacramento and hash out your grievances with the GOP? More likely, a cruise missile or drones for Sacramento would be your negotiations.

We are near the mountains - well about ninety miles away. The Nebraska Panhandle is extremely rural with few people and has lots of wildlife, like mountain goats, elk, deer, antelope, and other such critters that allow mountain lions food.

Moreover, the Nebraska Sandhils (one mile north of my town) stretch four hundred miles across northern Nebraska from the Laramie Range in Wyoming to the eastern reaches of the state. Most of it is empty, much of it is nature preserves (such as the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge), and most of the rest is ranches. The largest city in the Nebraska Sandhills is Scottsbluff/Gering/Terrytown (all together 14,000).

Lots of places for mountain lions here. West of town in Banner County, in the sandstone bluffs are caves. The Wildcat Hills south of town stretch between my town and Sidney all the way to the Laramie Range as well, including such things as Jail and Courthouse Rocks (a city park in Bridgeport), Chimney Rock National Monument (in Bayard), and Scott’s Bluff National Monument (in Gering).

Driving west on Road 78/NE-88 you follow rocky bluffs from just south of town all the way to US-85 west of La Grange, Wyoming. The only towns on that route are Bridgeport Redington (in my county, population 8 when the Bible Camp isn’t running), Alden (ghost town), La Grange (300).

Sure beats loading up a van, travelling halfway across the country and playing for 50 euros (on a good night) and then loading out and driving home at 3am…

The GOP has no replacement plan, but they’re going ahead with repeal votes. That doesn’t strike anyone odd? Speaker Ryan long claims to have a better way. That’s all bullshit.

This is the GOP plan: #GOPDontCare.

They don’t care that repealing ACA would add trillions to the debt over the next 10 years.
They don’t care that millions would lose coverage.
They don’t care that it’s been estimated that 45k people would die each year because of loss of coverage.
They don’t care that hospitals would again suffer from having to pick up indigent care and hospital bankruptcies would increase.
They don’t care that premium increases have slowed since the ACA was enacted - from over 30% average per year to about 20%.
They just don’t care.

The two lease cancellations address outstanding concerns about the potential for oil and gas development in this culturally and ecologically important area.

“We are proud to have worked alongside the Blackfeet Nation and the U.S. Forest Service throughout this process to roll back decades-old leases and reinforce the importance of developing resources in the right way and the right places,” Interior Secretary Jewell said Tuesday in announcing the move. “The cancellation of the final two leases in the rich cultural and natural Badger-Two Medicine Area will ensure it is protected for future generations.”

The BLM notified J.G. Kluthe Trust of Nebraska and W.A. Moncrief Jr. of Texas of the cancellations of the final two leases in the area. States weren’t able to overturn these due to the Supremacy clause, however they can be undone at the federal level by a simple majority vote.

I have more experience, given that my dad used to run housing programs in NYC and went out with him to job sites, watched him get housing projects built under federal, state, and local housing programs, deal with mortgage companies, nonprofits, and others to get more affordable housing built. I know what NAHRO is. And Section 8.

Carson knows none of this. Trump doesn’t care that Carson doesn’t. His supporters certainly don’t.

His chances of being reelected are slim. Unless Republican becomes a 4 letter word between now and his reelection, West Virginia will almost certainly elect a real Republican instead of whatever Manchin is. The thing is I actually have sympathy for him.

The voting population of his state has apparently deluded itself in the face of a mountain of evidence that voting Republican is the path back to the glory days. The state has been poor a long time and even a decent uptick in coal demand is not going generate a more than a paltry number of jobs, yet the people vote for for the party and the politicians who say they’ll do X because it’ll make the coal jobs come back. They do this despite the fact that the coal industry destroys the 2 most important assets that West Virginia has left: it’s People and its Land.

I fully expect that the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 (and subsequent amendments) and Voting Rights Act of 1965 will both come before a repeal vote in Congress during this session, and Republicans will strip 100 years of progress from minorities in a few short days’ time.

Keep in mind that things like redlining, fair housing, gerrymandering, literacy tests, and the like are NOT explicitly banned via the Constitution, but by legislative action. States weren’t able to overturn these due to the Supremacy clause, however they can be undone at the federal level by a simple majority vote.

Again, it’s part of the GOP suicide pact. They want to permanently install a tyrannical dictatorship and will probably get it.

The only outcome from this tyranny may not come with elections, I’m afraid. The GOP is daring for us to rebel against them, and those are never peaceful.

Looking at losing the ACA is going to have big impact on me.

So feeling more than a little hopeless, I figured the only thing I can do is start by writing emails to politicians.

I usually keep them to myself, but today I am going to share what I just sent to GOP Ohio Senator Rob Portman.

Who knows, maybe my words will help lead to other to do the same.

Here is what I wrote, I admit it is a bit more heated than my usual, but these are unusual times:

Senator Portman,

I see you and your buddies in the Republican Party are well on the way to tearing apart the ACA.

What a heartless man you and they are.

Anyone reading this that works for Senator Portman fits the same category.

You are killing people literally.

I’ll use the words to the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, a document I don’t think any damn Republican is capable of supporting.

Those words are: “insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare.”

That is what the ACA was doing. You?

No, you do noting for the general welfare. You work for the welfare of the rich, who for some godforsaken reason must not be rich enough.

And yet, many of you and your buddies in the GOP are career politicians.

You know what a career politician is? A taker. A person on government welfare.

Do those words sound familiar?

Again…you do nothing for the common people, therefore you do nothing for the general welfare of the country.

The ACA has helped me, but I guess I am just one person among millions that you really don’t care about as long as YOU get your government check, your government benefits, your government health care.

You and the GOP Senators proved last evening you are all a danger to this country and are destroying it, one dollar to you and your rich buddies at a time.

It is disgusting and unAmerican.

I hope the people of this country come back to vote you and the rest of Republicans out of your seats, sooner than later.

But then, that may not happen as you do everything you can to mess with them actually being able to vote.

What a mess of so many lives you have just made. I hope all the souls of the people you just gave a death penalty come back to haunt you and GOP for the rest of your pathetic lives.

A reminder to all: when the preamble to the Constitution states that one of the purposes of the document was to “promote the general welfare” that did not apply to the millions of Americans who were slaves nor to the native Americans. The Republican party wants to restore the term to a more limited group: namely only those wealthy Americans who are in the 1%. Baby Whiplash exemplifies their philosophy: if you are poor, you have no rights, especially any right to health care.

Officer: So you say you saw who mugged you, sir?

Brooks: Yes. It was a big guy. With a bat. Also liberals were involved.

Officer: Leaving aside the liberals for a moment, what did this “big guy” look like?

Brooks: About six foot. Maybe 200 pounds. White. But the Democrats unreasonable position on Medicare contributed…

Officer: Like I said, sir; we’ll get back to the Democrats and liberals later. Now about the man who mugged you. Could you describe what kind of clothes he had on?

Brooks: Yes. He was wearing a “Bush/Cheney ‘04” t-shirt, a tri-corner hat and was carrying one of those “Don’t Tread On Me” flags. (pauses) Officer, you seem to be deliberately ignoring the liberal involvement here.

Officer: No sir — I’m writing all of it down. It’s just important that we start with the facts.

Brooks: Well the fact is, officer, that Democrats are clearly implicated here as well as a fringe nutcase who in no way represents the main body of Conservative thinking.

Officer: Alrighty then, Mr. Brooks, you seem to be going into shock or maybe you have a slight concussion, so lets try coming at this another way. You say you were mugged, right?

Brooks: I was definitely mugged. Assaulted and mugged.

Officer: OK, then. How many people were physically holding the baseball bat? How many different people had their hands on it?

Brooks (pauses): Uh…just the one guy.

Officer: The man with the “Bush/Cheney ‘04” t-shirt?

Brooks (pauses): Yes.

Officer: And how many people actually said to you — and I quote — “Gimme your fucking wallet or I’ll fucking kill you you fucking Commie”?

Officer: Between them, they’ll give us a very accurate count of how many physical, real people were involved.

Brooks: Oh.

Officer: So you were estimating something about it being between five and none?

Brooks: Uh, let’s just go with “none” then. To keep it simple.

Officer: Of course sir. So there were no people other than you and the assailant within 30 feet of the incident. How about 50 feet?

Brooks: None.

Officer: 100 feet?

Brooks: None.

Officer: So it would be fair to say, then, that the entire street was deserted except for you and the big man in the Republican t-shirt, and Tea Party flag and hat who called you — and, again, I’m quoting — a “fucking Commie”…

Brooks: Yes.

Officer: …clubbed you on the head…

Brooks: Yes.

Officer: …and stole your wallet.

Brooks: Yes, yes, yes. If you want to be a pedant about it, technically that is a description with which I cannot disagree.

Officer: “Pedant” is a big part of my job description, sir.

Brooks: I see. So are we through?

Officer: Not quite sir. A few minutes ago you were quite worked up over some people you seemed to imply were in some way conspiring with big man in the Republican t-shirt, and Tea Party flag and hat.

Flips through his notebook.

Officer: You identified a “Nancy Pelosi” and a “Harry Reid” by name, and implicated two groups called “liberals” and “Democrats”.

Brooks: Finally! Yes! The Liberals!

Officer: Now if you would be good enough to point to exactly where these persons and groups were located relative to the crime scene.

Brooks: I don’t understand.

Officer: I mean, did you see Nancy Pelosi in one of those windows up there? Perhaps talking to your assailant on a cell phone?

Brooks: Of course not.

Officer: Did you hear a group of these “Liberals” hiding around the corner shouting instructions? Or maybe this “Harry Reid” person drove past you in a car in a threatening manner?

Brooks: No. It doesn’t work like that.

Officer: What “doesn’t work like that”?

Brooks: (mutters inaudibly)

Officer: I’m sorry sir, could you speak up please? I couldn’t hear you.

Brooks: “Centrism”, alright? I said “Centrism”?

Officer: Meaning…what?

Brooks: Meaning that Liberals don’t actually have to be present or in any way involved to be blameworthy.

Officer: So they’re…invisible Liberals?

Brooks: No, no! You don’t understand. They’re not “invisible”; they’re…uh…implicit. See, implicit in everything that guy with the bat did, there is a liberal counter-move or opposite-thingie which makes the Left equally to blame.

Officer stares silently.

Brooks: And that is where the real detective work begins.

Officer: The “real” detective work?

Brooks: Of course! Any idiot can look at mere evidence and blame the crazy Republican with the bat, but a real detective knows he has to keep looking and looking and looking and looking until he figures out the secret Liberal-counter-recto-converse thingie which makes the crazy Republican with a bat and Nancy Pelosi equally to blame.

Officer: Fascinating. Then what happens?

Brooks: Then you write it up in 800-words for the New York Times, go home to your suburban mansion and wait for huge bags of money to arrive.

Officer: Is that all?

Brooks: Basically. You also get invited onto national teevee and radio talk shows where your repeat your column word-for-word, but that’s just beer money.

Officer: And that’s what you think “real detective work” is?

Brooks: Sure. What else would you call it?

Officer: I’m sure I don’t know, sir. I’m a trained police detective and all I see here is one Republican who has been beaten and mugged by another Republican.

Brooks: Ah, but to the truly trained eye, Officer, the implicit Liberalness here is evident.

Officer: (sighs) Mr. Brooks , “implicit” is from a Latin word. “Implicitus”. It means “interwoven”.

Brooks: You know Latin?

Officer: Yes sir.

Brooks: (mutters) Fuck me.

Officer: So explain to my untrained eye exactly in what way are Liberals “interwoven” with a crime committed against you on an empty street by a crazed Republican with a baseball bat?

Brooks: (petulant) Look, that’s just the way it works.

Officer: The way what works?

Brooks: “Centrism”.

Officer: So according to this “Centrism”, every time a Republican assaults someone, somewhere out there is a Liberal who is at least equally to blame for it?

Brooks: Correct.

Officer: And every time a Liberal does something wrong, a Republican is also at fault?

Brooks: No, every time a Liberal does something wrong Conservatism is vindicated and Ronald Reagan smiles down on us from Heaven.

Officer: I see. (closes his notebook) I think I have all I need here.

Brooks: So what happens now?

Officer: Now we pick this guy up. Based on the description you gave us — Republican in a funny hat who screams “Commie” at random strangers before smacking them with a baseball bat — it shouldn’t be that hard.

Brooks: And Nancy Pelosi too?

Officer: No, not Nancy Pelosi too; we pedants in the police department are limited to acting only on actual evidence.

Brooks: Then what?

Officer: Then we book him, you ID him, it goes to court and he goes to prison.

Brooks: Oh no, no, no. We can’t do that.

Officer: Excuse me?

Brooks: We can’t do that.

Officer: Is there a problem?

Brooks: (drops his voice) Honestly, if there is any way for you to just discreetly get my wallet back and let the rest of it drop… (trails off)

Officer: Mr. Brooks, some very serious crimes have been committed here, and but for a little bit of luck you could be lying dead in the street. And given what you’ve told me, if we act quickly there is a very good chance we can catch the person who did it, put him behind bars and keep him from hurting anyone else.

Brooks: And I appreciate that, but you must understand, there are wider implications.

Officer: What are you taking about? This guy’s a violent lunatic — with club — who is walking around ripping people off and then smashing them in the head? Why in the world would you not want to press charges against him?

Brooks: (Looks around nervously and whispers) Because he’s my boss.
