As for that idea of sending in Federal agents into Chicago, that in politics is called “floating a trial balloon.” The purpose of such a statement is to see who accepts it and who opposes it.
If there were massive opposition (not just Chicago), it would likely be withdrawn. I’m guessing that won’t happen.

The true Trump supporters of my acquaintance are as delusional as Trump and their delusions arose from years of listening to propaganda from Breitbart, Fox, and other right-wing media sources. Trump did not force his delusions on his supporters; they already believed fables they heard elsewhere and flocked to him because he believed as they did. They also believe his fables about his remarkable business acumen and skill in negotiation.

Always eats me up when I find out a ski patrol died in his ski boots while on duty. First time for me was when I was about eight or nine years old, when I heard that a Vail ski patrol dude got struck by lightning and died. I’ve skied past that dude’s memorial a thousand times and I always think about his extraordinary stroke of bad luck.
Today, this happened:
Joe Zuiches, a 42 year-old resident of Olympic Valley and a member of the Squaw Valley professional ski patrol since 2012, was killed in a fatal incident at 8:35 AM this morning during avalanche control activities. The incident, which occurred at the top of Gold Coast Ridge at Squaw Valley, does not appear to be avalanche related.
A bomb he was using (or someone else was using, we don’t know right now) for avalanche control blew up too close to him, and he died.

Kurt Eichenwald writes in Newsweek about the three Marines who disappeared in the Mayaguez Incident (the last combat of the Vietnam War, in which the Khmer Rouge seized a US container ship). President Ford ordered the Marines in to save the crew and recapture the vessel.
President Ford got a huge boost in his ratings over the counterattack, but for forty years conservatives have argued the three missing Marines disobeyed orders and didn’t catch their helicopter in time, so being missing was their fault.
Their names are the last on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Now the information comes out that they were left on the beach and that was covered up to blame the Marines themselves for being left behind.
Way down in the article:
Anderson, the last American to see the three alive, according to military reports, doesn’t recall seeing them at the landing zone, but he does remember their call after the last chopper lifted off. He says he heard a recording of it in Okinawa, several days after the battle, while he was under investigation for leaving the Marines behind (he was cleared of responsibility). “There was a tape of [the Marines] that I thought the enemy had made,” he says. (According to Velie, the Americans recorded all radio communications with Marines on the ground.) “It was definitely Hall, Marshall and Hargrove,” Anderson adds. He can’t remember what they said, but he didn’t hear Cambodian voices on the tape, he says, and there was no evidence of coercion. “[The tape] got to me. I thought I was at fault.”
With the three Marines possibly still alive but no longer responding, the U.S. military had a difficult decision to make. Velie says there were many possible reasons the Marines on the beach didn’t get back on the radio. His aircraft could have moved out of their range. Or they had been wounded or forced to hide because Khmer Rouge fighters were nearby. Because of their poor swimming ability, he doubts they tried going out to sea. His aircraft stayed in the area until after midnight, hoping to make contact again, but the radio remained silent.

Trump to Hang Photo of Inauguration Crowd in West Wing for Reporters.
A panoramic photo of Donald Trump’s inauguration crowd will hang in the West Wing, the president announced Tuesday afternoon on Twitter, where reporters skeptical of his “unbelievable, perhaps record-setting turnout” will see it every day.
Trump made no reference to the clash between his administration and the press corps over the weekend regarding the attendance at his inauguration, only writing that the photo was delivered yesterday and that it “will be displayed in the upper/lower press hall.” The upper press and lower press are specific areas in the West Wing where administration press and communications officials work and to which reporters have access.
The upper and lower press areas were also decorated with photos during President Barack Obama’s administration. Those photos were rotated somewhat regularly to reflect the president’s recent activities and in the administration’s final weeks included highlights of his eight years in office.
The photo, posted to Twitter by Trump, incorrectly lists the date of his inauguration as Jan. 21, 2017, instead of Jan. 20. The Women’s March on Washington, believed to have drawn a significantly larger crowd than Trump’s inauguration, was held on Jan. 21.

Interesting. You go to the Website of the photographer listed above, and it has the correct date of the inauguration.

Sounds a bit like Rollerball (1975)
Excerpt from a review by Phil H; bolding is mine:
August 13, 2012
In the future rollerskating is a deadly sport where anything goes, yes rollerskating. Its 2018 and the world is a corporate state, a dystopian future where everything is controlled by various global corporations. The ‘Energy Corporation’ based in Houston controls the Houston Rollerball team and pretty much the players of the team too.‘Jonathan E’ is the greatest Rollerball champion of his time, possibly all time. The corporation love their star player but want to retire him, Rollerball was meant to quench the public’s blood lust but also show the futility of individualism.

I took one for the team for Jim Wright. I clicked on Sarah Palin’s link, which leads to some wingnut conservative site I never heard of claiming “a liberal” set someone on fire at Mr. Trump’s inauguration.
The wingnutosphere is on it, Daily Caller is calling for people to identify a person who set someone’s hair on fire (that seems to be the going story for now);
dailycaller (dot) com/2017/01/22/can-you-identify-this-woman-who-set-a-trump-supporters-hair-on-fire-in-dc-on-inauguration-day/
They have a YouTube video clip (so did the other wingnut site), then have a blown up picture of a woman who they say they want the name of.
Watching their video (which has added text to show your attention to the scene in question), it would appear someone tried to set a woman’s hair on fire, followed by someone trying to put it out.
I am not good enough with video to tell if one is edited or not.
If someone did, we certainly don’t need stuff like that. (The video is of the Women’s March, not the inauguration.) Moreover, if someone has such a video they should be turning it over to police.

that is their dream, not only abolishing the New Deal but creating a Newer Deal, or should we say a New Order
For example, on the media blackout of government agencies, VOA has this:
“Incoming media requests will be carefully screened,” one directive said. “Only send out critical messages, as messages can be shared broadly and end up in the press.”
A review of EPA websites and social media accounts, which typically include numerous new posts each day, showed no new activity since Friday.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Tuesday that he had no information on the blackout. He said aides were looking into the circumstances.
On his claim of voter fraud that has morphed to illegal immigrant voter fraud, so far VOA is reporting it straight, but we’ll see how long that lasts.
WHITE HOUSE —
The White House said Tuesday that President Donald Trump continues to believe that voting by millions of undocumented immigrants cost him a victory in the national popular vote in November’s election.
“It’s a belief he maintains,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters, one day after the new president rehashed the election at a reception for congressional leaders, repeating the debunked claim that 3 million to 5 million immigrants in the country illegally voted for his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Spicer offered no evidence of fraud. Pressed by reporters on what evidence Trump has, Spicer said Trump “has believed that for a while, based on studies and information he has.”
Further down that article, Mitch McConnell played magic balance fairy:
Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters voter fraud does happen, adding: “There are always arguments on both sides about how much, how frequent and all the rest.”
They also have Senator Lindsay Graham’s comment to Mr. Trump that he needs to knock this off.
A provision tucked into the Defense Authorisation Act gutted the Broadcasting Board of Governors (which runs VOA).
Essentially, that gives Mr. Trump his “Trump TV and Radio” financed by the taxpayers.

Don’t give up. Don’t accept the new normal.
That Trump is going to lay waste to the US is now pretty accepted as inevitable here (in Western Europe).
A friend working at the European Space agency told me that new procedures are being set up to prevent information-sharing with the US and the UK.

That would fit in line with this futurist’s prediction of the complete collapse of the US as a world power by 2020. (TBH, it could even come sooner.)
I have a problem with people who are shown to have predicted things that came to pass.
You never hear about the predictions that didn’t come to pass. Motherboard heaps praise on this guy for predicting such things as the collapse of the Soviet Union. He was hardly the only one.
What has he predicted that failed to come true (which prophets and scammers alike will claim it just hasn’t happened yet)?
Star Trek predicted something quite like cell phones (though amateur radio operators were already working on that) and something like the Internet.
As of yet, we still don’t have flying cars as Popular Mechanics and The Jetsons predicted.

Perhaps the best that comes out of this is Trump fucks things up so bad that Republicans don’t get near the Presidency again for a long, LONG time.
My bet is that far-left third party candidates will continue to eat at the edges for Democrats offsetting what they would gain through Trump incompetency unless there is a clear message a move out to the central states all the states.

Yeah, I’m not holding my breath on anyone moving here. I’m guessing the first time someone in a coastal state heard you have to drive sixty miles for a veterinarian or a department store, or all the jobs are in farming and ranching, the answer would be “hell no.”
What? Your nearest cinema is sixty miles away?
The message needs to be “help us help ourselves” out here. These same rural areas used to be the progressive areas of the country. We were abandoned long ago.
Since there is no way the Electoral College is going away, we go back to my standard argument: start counting those states you wish to cede, as each gets two electoral votes.
“It costs too much” or “we need to focus on areas we can win” means there will be no wins.
Liberals like to claim they base their positions on facts, but somehow become curiously fact-free when the Electoral College comes up.

As I’ve said before, I don’t think abandoned captures it entirely. Most of my family were farmers in Illinois. Much of that land is now owned by a few mega-ag complexes. Almost none are in farming, and this just a generation difference. You could have FDR Democrats among family farmers, but that’s unlikely when farming is becoming more like corporate anything. Ultimately, though, it comes down to who will fork over the subsidies and in places like California and Arkansas who will look the other way on undocumented workers.

Most of the land here is owned by individuals. As far as I have seen living here there are no mega-ag corporations owning the land, just individual farmers and ranchers complaining about how high our property taxes are. (NE is right near the top.)
Property taxes are a good example of a flat tax: Regardless of how much you make, every square foot is taxed the same. If you’re a family farmer or rancher, those can be quite high.
However, as ranchers and farmers die and others choose not to take their place, I would expect corporations to move in and buy land at estate sales. That is how it was done in other states.

Well, maybe the Dems can be the party of subsidies. I don’t know how you change it then. There’s no incentive at your local level and in many places the next biggest employer is either Walmart or the local penitentiary.

We don’t have any local Walmarts. The nearest is over sixty miles away.
I wonder what would happen if the Democratic Party (nationally) were to offer infrastructure improvements to areas such as ours. (I dunno, maybe wireless service. Perhaps encouraging corporations to invest in Internet service. Maybe 911 service - our county got that in 2012 but most of the rural counties here don’t have it. A few paved roads might be nice too.)
Businesses prosper more under Democratic administrations than Republican ones. Perhaps encouraging businesses to make investments in underserved areas would help.
I dunno, I am not an economist (nor for that matter a farmer). I do know that the national party blowing off the state parties and the state parties blowing off the county parties is not exactly a recipe for success.

When we moved to Nebraska, we wrote the Kay County, Oklahoma elections clerk to remove us from the voter rolls there after we were registered here.
Kay County required us to obtain notarised letters stating our intent to abandon the voter rolls.
For a time, we were registered in both states.
In person voter fraud or impersonation requires (like any other crime) an intent to carry out the crime. Being in Nebraska and registering to vote here hardly would qualify as intent to commit voter fraud in Oklahoma.

Trump Uncertainty Fuels South Korea Nuclear Talk (goes to Voice of America, more at the link with analysis):
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA —
Some South Korean conservatives are citing President Donald Trump’s past statements on reducing U.S. security commitments in Asia to argue that their nation must now prepare its own nuclear option to defend against the growing North Korean nuclear threat.
“I’m not saying we should develop nuclear weapons overnight. I’m saying that if there are the right conditions, then we should go nuclear,” said Lee Choon-kun, a researcher with the Korea Institute for Maritime Strategy, at an event sponsored by the East Asia Foundation in Seoul Tuesday.
…
Proponents say South Korea could quickly develop nuclear weapons using existing nuclear power plant facilities and fuel, and with the military’s advanced conventional weapons production capability.
However, South Korea would likely face severe consequences for violating the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty (NPT) that could include diplomatic isolation and international sanctions similar to what North Korea is facing.
And it could also lead to Japan and other countries developing their own nuclear deterrent.

Roman Polanski now out at the Cesar Film Awards in France (still perusing the Polish news here in Nebraska) after outcry and petitions:
thenews.pl (Radio Poland in English)
Feminist groups have collected over 60,000 signatures on a petition calling for Polanski to be prevented from performing the prestigious role next month at the César awards, which are known as the “French Oscars”.
The director, now 83, fled the US in February 1978, shortly before being sentenced for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. He settled in Paris, where he has been chiefly based ever since.
A lawyer representing the director said on Tuesday in a statement that the outcry was unwarranted, adding that the controversy had “deeply saddened” Polanski and affected his family.
French Minister for Women’s Rights Laurence Rossignol had expressed concern at the “shocking” selection of Polanski.
During his long career, Polanski has received six Oscar nominations, two BAFTAs, four Césars, a Golden Globe Award and the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.
Trump’s double fisting the derp this morning. First with the immigration crap that he’s going to limit access from Muslim-majority nations, even though those seeking refuge here are trying to escape the likes of ISIS.
It’s the same fucking thing these fascist yams were doing back in the 1930s - preventing Jews from entering the US because they suspected Jews were spies or German infiltrators. How many thousands - nay hundreds of thousands of Jews - perished because the US refused to allow entry? How many died because these nationalist nuts think that people coming to the Shining City on the Hill are the enemy and not because they are trying to live up to the mythos of being a refuge and welcome people from around the world (ignoring that all but the Native Americans are people who came here to escape tyranny from around the world, and then promptly tried to impose their own brand here - up to and including screwing over the very Native Americans whose lands were expropriated).
Speaking of Native Americans, Trump is pushing the pipelines that would directly harm the Standing Rock Reservation should the pipeline leak. The threat of a leak was sufficient to justify changing the route away from other cities, but that pushed the risk of harm on to Native Americans. This is Trump screwing over Native Americans once again - just as he did back when he was running his casinos into the ground.
On top of all that - he’s pushing the voter fraud nonsense again - but that’s a lie with a purpose. Get enough people to recite/repeat the lie and push voter suppression methods that limit the vote of minorities and people who would otherwise vote against the GOP. The GOP fears voters. They lose when people turn out to vote. That’s why this is the most dangerous of the lies he’s told to date. It’s the one that has no basis in reality - and it’s quite besides the point.
The GOP will use the lie to fashion voter ID laws and make other restrictions that reduce the access to polls.
Meanwhile, Senate Democrats continue to piss me off by not voting against clearly unqualified and incompetent nominees for positions sought. Carson’s nomination should have been a slam dunk NO and yet Democrats including Warren are saying that they’ll back him for HUD.
All these nominees are getting rubber stamped by the GOP in any event since Democrats don’t have the numbers to stop any of the confirmations. But the Democrats aren’t even showing that they’re learning the new rules - which is to say the rules don’t exist. The GOP tossed all the rules out the window when they engaged in obstruction from day 1. Democrats have to learn this or else we’re going to see far worse in the years to come. Schumer isn’t helping matters either.
So far the only Democrat who seems to have gotten this is Gillinbrand.
Unqualified nominees should be unceremoniously voted against. This isn’t even a question, and yet Democrats are waffling and thinking that this somehow improves their chances down the road? This is the same mess that led to Democrats losing control of Congress in midterms in 2010 and 2014. Running away from the principled stand (which at that time was supporting Obamacare). Now, they’re running away from no votes against unqualified nominees.
Seriously, what the hell needs to happen for Democrats to grow a fucking spine against the fascists across the aisle who are rushing headlong into depriving all Americans of their rights and privileges.

There’s also an action being started by the scientists to start getting some of them running for office. I’d have to go find it.
Okay, this is just brutal: The true, correct story of what happened at Donald Trump’s inauguration:
Everyone in the world had come there at great expense. They sold all their possessions — their homes, their “Hamilton” tickets, which were worthless to them — to raise money to come and see this great sight. They could not believe that a perfect being such as Donald Trump even existed. They thought that he was a myth or a legend or a decades-long series of fabrications.
But then they saw him, and their doubts fell away.
The media was there, too, and they were very sorry. “Donald,” the newscasters said, “we were mean to you. We used to laugh and call you names. We were no better than all of the other reindeer. How can you ever forgive us?”
“Forgive you?” Donald Trump asked. “I’ve already forgotten.” He smiled a big, beautiful smile. That was just who Donald Trump was: forgiving, like Jesus, but blond.
It was a wonderful start to the day.
Everyone liked Donald Trump’s speech and the words that he used. They liked even more the part where he rolled up his sleeve and showed off his bicep. It was a great bicep. It made the Rock so upset to see it that he threw something down on the ground and said “darn.”
…
Then Donald Trump served loaves and fishes to everyone there. There were enough loaves and fishes for everyone, and they all were Made in America and said “TRUMP” on them. It was like the Oscars, but also like Woodstock, but also like the Super Bowl, but also like the Sermon on the Mount. If you were not there, you should just go home and die, because nothing in your life will have purpose or meaning by comparison, not even holding your newborn child in your arms or having health insurance. This is what FOMO was talking about for all these years.
Bono, and Bruce Springsteen, and Elton John, and the Rolling Stones, and Beyonce, and all the top artists were there. They fought hard over who would be allowed to sing. Finally Bruce Springsteen won. Bono cried and cried, and the other artists had to console him. When Bruce Springsteen had finished singing, he walked over to Donald Trump, extended his hand, and said, “You are the only real hero left in the world.”
The people were so excited that they built a very special stone pyramid just for Donald Trump so that he would not have to wait until he died to see what his monument would look like. But they were silly to be concerned. Donald Trump will never die!
Alexandra Petri should consider hiring a security detail, though.

There are elections this year - whether they’re local school boards, or governorships in places like NJ. Elections every year. Can’t just turn out once every 4 years. That’s not how it works - but that’s how the GOP likes it since they hate turnout.

Good. Mrs. DeVos would get no traction in the Senate if Republican senators were not wingnuts.

We don’t have odd-year elections here, unless there is some sort of special election.
Our next election is in 2018, where I am sure the Republicans will serve me Adrian Smith again for Representative, and the Democrats will ignore us again. They don’t need these Plains states after all. (A few reps here, a few reps there, and suddenly you’re in the minority - funny how that works.)
If Representative Car Thief can get reëlected in California, surely the Dems could run someone - anyone - in each House district.
I foresee the day when a large swath of the country’s children might ask, “Daddy, what’s a Democrat?”
re: #149 Anymouse
Roman Polanski now out at the Cesar Film Awards in France (still perusing the Polish news here in Nebraska) after outcry and petitions:
thenews.pl (Radio Poland in English)
If the State of California had launched a criminal action in France at the time (now the statute of limitations has run out) as it had the right to do, instead of stupidly misinterpreting the French-US extradition treaty (which clearly specifies that each country does not extradite its own citizens, only those from the other country), Polanski would have served a minimum of 7 years in jail (if i recall correctly) just for having sex with a minor, rape charges notwithstanding.

Has Alex Rubinstein, the RT America operative who was arrested along with protesters and legitimate journalists in DC, been released yet?
This is an embarrassing misstep by the new Trump administration. Putin will no doubt understand, as long as due compensation is given and there are no recurrences.
This is really just a hazard of the job though. If you go around pretending to be a real journalist, as the job sometimes requires, you cannot expect every storm trooper out there to have gotten the word yet. Perhaps they should issue recognition card sets so they can tell friend from foe.

Charles Pierce nails it (and it scares the living shit out of me):
It’s been fun to point and laugh at the new administration. It’s been fun to mock Sean Spicer’s obvious discomfort at the podium, and to sit in awe at the obvious infighting within the White House this early in the game. But, while we’re doing that, slowly and steadily, an actual government has been forming, and it is the most dangerously retrograde government that our system has produced in at least the past 150 years.
It is secretive and it is resistant to any empirical information that it does not want to hear. It is grotesquely anti-science. It seeks to roll back progressive achievements dating back to Teddy Roosevelt and it has the power to do so, even if it is in its own bungling way. And it really hasn’t gotten rolling yet.
re: #216 BeachDem

Trump is so insecure that he needs daily affirmations that he’s doing what he thinks is right - all reality be damned. So we’ll cherry pick a few tweets that suggest he’s ramming through his agenda and is succeeding because the GOP wants to push the agenda, consequences to the nation be damned.

Yup, there is really no safe place. (Perhaps Mexico, because they will have a wall to keep Americans in, something-something, ah yes, what East Germany called theirs: The Anti-Fascist Rampart, designed to keep West Germans out.)

I’ve been expecting sane nations to take steps, some of them pretty drastic, to mitigate the damage Trump can do. It must be assumed, for example, that any information shared will go straight to Moscow.
I also wonder if countries like Switzerland are dusting off their nuclear weapons plans. The Swiss actually pursued nukes pretty seriously in the 50s and 60s and kept their nuclear weapons working group open until 1988. They also kept 20 kg of plutonium until 2016 when they transferred it to the US for “safekeeping.” Will they want it back now?

Well, the last 24 hours have been interesting. Yesterday afternoon I got to see a NASCAR-style crash on the freeway right in front of me. This morning, I got up at 5 am as usual, got ready and drove to work. Sixteen miles later, just as I’m about to turn in the parking lot, my brother called. Thankfully, I have one of those newfangled cars with Bluetooth so it routed right to the dashboard. It was my brother, who basically has been throwing up for the last 24 hours and needed me to take him to the ER. I turned around, drove to my mom’s and, yup, he was in bad shape. So now I’m sitting in a cube at the ER with mom and brother. What fun.

We were talking about this guy yesterday, a wingnut state senator from Papillion, a suburb of Omaha.
starherald.com
(Goes to the Scottsbluff NE Star-Herald, more at the link)
LINCOLN — Embattled State Sen. Bill Kintner is resigning from the Nebraska Legislature following months of criticism from lawmakers, constituents and Gov. Pete Ricketts.
Kintner’s resignation is effective Jan. 30.
The Papillion senator’s expulsion from the Legislature was likely to have occurred later Wednesday had he not stepped down.
Kintner, 56, announced his decision to resign during an 8:15 a.m. press conference at the State Capitol, less than an hour ahead of when lawmakers planned to take up a motion to expel him.
Ricketts will appoint Kintner’s replacement to represent District 2, which includes Cass County and parts of Sarpy and Otoe Counties. The appointee will serve until 2018.
Kintner, who admitted last year to using a state laptop to engage in cybersex with a woman he met online, became the target of a barrage of criticism during legislative floor debate this week after he retweeted a Twitter post that appeared to make light of sexual assault.
Speaker of the Legislature Jim Scheer, who planned to introduce the motion to expel Kintner, said Tuesday he thought he had the required 33 votes to adopt it.
Nearly half of the Legislature’s 49 senators told The World-Herald that they would vote to remove Kintner from office. The majority of the remaining senators said they were unsure how they would vote.
Two lawmakers — Sens. Curt Friesen of Henderson and Mike Groene of North Platte — ruled out expulsion, saying they supported censure.
Kintner’s expulsion would have been unprecedented in the 80-year history of the unicameral Legislature.
Until now, Kintner had defied calls for his resignation. That included requests from the Cass County Republican Party and Ricketts, who reiterated his call as recently as this week.
Kintner is married to Lauren Kintner, who leads Ricketts’ policy research office.
Sen. Kintner faced particular pressure from Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, who for months distributed poems and drawings criticizing Kintner.
Chambers has said that Kintner’s $1,000 fine for misuse of state property wasn’t a severe enough penalty, and chastised other senators for remaining silent on the issue.
In the 2015 videoconferencing incident, Kintner masturbated with a woman he met on Facebook.
A conservative Republican, Kintner on Tuesday said he was “very troubled by the liberal activist campaign that is using my mistake on the tweet to escalate calls for my resignation.”
He also criticized Chambers, saying the Omaha senator’s agenda to remove him from office has been clear since last summer.

The Fight for the Soul of the Republican Party Has Been Canceled
There are hints in the air that the long-predicted ideological schism within the Republican Party between populists and traditional conservatives is breaking open. Donald Trump’s unusually populist inaugural address, almost devoid of traditional conservative themes, seemed to break new ideological ground. Unlike most Republicans who try to ape the rhetorical tropes associated with Ronald Reagan, Trump instead tried to recall the stylings of Andrew Jackson. “It was an unvarnished declaration of the basic principles of his populist and kind of nationalist movement,” chief strategist Steve Bannon told the Washington Post. “I don’t think we’ve had a speech like that since Andrew Jackson came to the White House,” Bannon said. “But you could see it was very Jacksonian.” Meanwhile, Trump has hired Julia Hahn, a 25-year-old Breitbart staffer who has savaged Paul Ryan for his past support for immigration reform, alarming allies of the House Speaker. re: #292 FormerDirtDart
Martin took command of 1st Infantry Division in September, after the previous commander was removed due to “a loss of confidence in his ability to lead “
One of the things to look for in a dictatorship-in-waiting is a purge of military officers.
While officers are occasionally removed for crimes, dereliction-of-duty, or loss of confidence, look for officers who seemingly are relieved for a perceived lack of loyalty.
The Navy frequently removes commanders for everything from loss-of-confidence to running a ship aground.
Duffel Blog (a satire site) satirised the Navy’s frequent relief of commanders noting an admiral was relieved for loss-of-confidence for not relieving enough officers.
WASHINGTON — Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Robert Burke has been relieved of his duties due to complete lack of confidence in his ability to hastily lead and relieve commanders, the Navy said today.
According to the official Navy release, Burke was relieved “due to not upholding the Navy’s long-standing tradition of failing to develop competent leaders, putting them into positions of increased responsibility prematurely, and subjectively tossing them by the wayside at a unsustainable rate.”
“This is the U.S. Navy. There are no second chances when it comes to the high-stakes game of maintaining the freedom of the seas,” said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John M. Richardson, regarding the service which has not fought in a major naval battle since WWII, let alone sunk an enemy ship since 1988. “We demand the very best, and we will fire every commander in the Navy until we figure out what exactly constitutes ‘the very best.’”
“Most importantly of all,” added Richardson, “we won’t tell anyone what that is if we do.”
Outgoing Navy secretary Ray Mabus echoed Richarson’s non-committal and nebulous comments to reporters earlier this week. He also revealed that Burke had been under investigation for “quite some time” regarding allegations of “encouraging mentorship and empowerment” of subordinate commanders.
“The last 70 years of failed American foreign policy notwithstanding, this is a zero-defect environment,” said Richardson. “We want to send a clear message to our leaders: failure to enforce standards, no matter how vague or impossible to achieve, are grounds for immediate dismissal.”

>The United States spends about $600 million a year on international assistance for family planning and reproductive health programs, making it possible for 27 million women and couples to access contraceptive services and supplies.
None of that money is spent on performing abortions. The Helms Amendment has prevented U.S. tax dollars from funding overseas abortions since 1973. Proponents of the global gag rule believe the policy is nevertheless still necessary, arguing that Helms isn’t strong enough by itself.
But the Guttmacher Institute and other opponents of the gag rule say that such restrictions have devastating effects on international organizations, often forcing them to close their clinics or reduce their services, denying women access to help from safe providers and even hampering HIV prevention efforts.
“In reality, attempts to stop abortion through restrictive laws ― or by withholding family planning aid ― can never eliminate abortion, because those methods do not eliminate women’s need for abortion. … Where abortion is permitted on broad legal grounds, it is generally much safer than where it is highly restricted,” Guttmacher wrote in a 2015 report.

That did not stop Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, from standing by the president’s words on Tuesday during a briefing with reporters at the White House. “As I said, I think the president has believed that for a while based on studies and information he has,” Mr. Spicer said.

I don’t use the right-wing made-up term “sanctuary city.” The whole idea is to shift the moral and legal burden, such as the made-up term “pro-life.”
Cities are not required to expend money to enforce Federal laws. That is the job of the Federal government, and no city has ever tried to prevent ICE or any other Federal organisation from carrying out their duties.
The term is a misdirection from the real goal: defunding locales. All they have to do is say “city X is a sanctuary city because it is not co-operating” and that’s it.
Call it what it is: hostage-taking. Bullying. Forcing others to do your work at their expense. Federal overreach.

Fuck off Sheriff.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones is famous for his opposition to undocumented workers. Now one of his victims has fought back and won $100,000.00!
Luis Rodriguez was hanging drywall at a construction site in Butler County when Sheriff staff members entered the work site as part of an “immigration investigation” and rounded up over 20 Hispanic workers. Twelve workers were fired after questioning by the sheriff staff. Mr. Rodriguez was arrested based on documents that he possessed. Attorney George Fee vigorously represented Mr. Rodriguez in the criminal case and won an acquittal. But once in custody, Mr. Rodriguez was removed from the country along with his wife and two children. They had lived in Southern Ohio for eleven years working, paying taxes, and attending a local Christian Church. They are now living in poverty in Mexico.
Attorney Al Gerhardstein sued Sheriff Jones on behalf of Mr. Rodriguez. He claimed that Mr. Rodriguez was “seized” when he was taken to the construction trailer at the worksite for interrogation in violation of the Fourth Amendment. He also alleged a violation of the Equal Protection Clause. In addition, Gerhardstein argued that the Sheriff did not have power to enforce the federal civil immigration law. The case was pending on motions for summary judgment and only weeks away from trial when the County agreed to pay $100,000 in settlement of the claims.

The term is actually thousands of years old, but it entered US politics only recently (courtesy Wikipedia):
This issue entered presidential politics in the race for the Republican Party presidential nomination in 2008. Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo ran on an anti-illegal immigration platform and specifically attacked sanctuary cities. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney accused former mayor Rudy Giuliani of running New York City as a sanctuary city. Giuliani’s campaign responded saying that Romney ran a sanctuary Governor’s mansion, and that New York City is not a “haven” for undocumented immigrants.
After the murder of a restaurant waitress in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in late June 2009 that was suspected to be perpetrated by three undocumented immigrants (one of whom was not deported despite being arrested for two prior DUI incidents), then mayoral candidate Richard J. Berry decried the city’s sanctuary city policy. He also vowed, if elected, to repeal the policy that has been continued by the incumbent mayor, Martin Chávez.

After a video posted on Facebook showed a group of people shouting epithets at former North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory during his trip to D.C. for inaugural weekend, a state senator from North Carolina has proposed legislation that would insulate public officials from verbal criticism.
Yes, it is blatantly unconstitutional. The NC GOP has enough votes to over-ride any veto, however, and they will absolutely use this to arrest people.

How long that would take, I really don’t know, but I presume it might be awhile.
