re: #16 Anymouse
He’s not wrong. He’s not _in the right_, but he’s not wrong.
Sarah Kendzior in an opinion piece in Toronto’s Globe and Mail today, more at the link:
A week ago, the Trump administration was in trouble. Its health-care plan failed, the President’s ratings were at a record low and more nefarious campaign dealings with Russia had been revealed. The LA Times ran a viral, multipart series outlining that Mr. Trump is an authoritarian leader who lies compulsively and is unfit to hold office.
But by the end of the week, an LA Times columnist awarded Trump’s week a “B” for a job well done. That job, of course, was bombing Syria.
When the media cheers Mr. Trump’s bombing, seemingly forgetting the policy failures that preceded those explosions, we’re all in danger. He is a man who craves praise - and if he receives it through brute force, he’ll keep doing it.
Case in point: On Thursday, Mr. Trump dropped something called “the mother of all bombs” - a bomb so large it’s never been used in combat - in eastern Afghanistan.
He seeks praise for this - and hopes that the smoke will hide all of his many transgressions.
Wow. I’m sad, but this is awesome. Went to CL’s page and started reading to remember. She made many really good Pages with LGF’s sweet and slick interface.
I thought ‘wonder how some of my old Pages look.’ I rolled down looking at some old Pages of mine laughing and cringing and smirking at my old words. Lo and behold one of my first Pages where I got real and poured me guts out.. and CL posted a most CL response.
Awesome.

Husband and I ran away from home for a couple of nights to celebrate or 25th wedding anniversary yesterday. Bittersweet reminder of something I’ve seen in fandom for 30 years, that mail/chat/online communities and friendships can be as real as any “in real life” even when you seldom — or never — meet face-to-face.
Sharp reminder that I need to catch my “notify when I croak” list up to date, and finish the damned list of all my online accounts and passwords to go with my will and power of attorney. Cyberspace is a real place in all of our lives now, with legal and financial ramifications.
Curious reminder that as I’ve gotten older, the words “quietly, in their sleep” resonate differently now. “Peacefully.” Perhaps a blessing, albeit a hard one for those left behind.

My regional paper is reporting on a different aspect of Rep. Mike Coffman’s (R-Colo.) angry town hall in Aurora. (Bear in mind our newspaper leans so far right it could fall over.)
Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman told an angry crowd that he’ll oppose Donald Trump at the right time but won’t do it every day.
Coffman held his first town hall of the year Wednesday night. It was packed with anti-Trump constituents who booed the congressman. Coffman had pledged to stand up to Trump during his re-election campaign last year in a district won by Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Coffman said the president and members of Congress should be forced by law to release their tax returns. But he insisted he could not force Trump to do that retroactively.
He grew visibly frustrated at jeers from the crowd saying “Those of you on the extreme left will never be satisfied until Trump” leaves office. (emphasis mine)
re: #31 Anymouse
Something tells me his definition of the ‘extreme left’ doesn’t coincide with mine.

The GOP wants to have it both ways: They want their constituents to believe that they don’t really like Trump and are opposing him BUT they are angry that people think that opposition should be more than just empty words said between votes.

Around these parts, I am the “extreme left.” Holding Rep. Coffman to his words somehow in his mind makes you “the extreme left.”
At least Rep. Coffman had enough courage to show up for a town hall (something a lot of GOP reps haven’t been doing lately).
I don’t understand why Democrats who are considering running for office in Republican-represented districts simply don’t get up on a stage when a GOP rep doesn’t show for a town hall (unless there is some sort of rules or laws against that).

I’ve no idea, but it might simply be that its getting them more mileage to let angry voters hound the GOP rather than giving them something to attack. Because lets be honest, if the Dems did try to jump up on stage like that, the GOP would be quick to scream bloody murder and portray themselves as the “victims.”
Overall, what we have is a GOP that is trying desperately to play both sides, convincing moderate and liberal voters that they’re not onboard with Trump, while at the same time convincing conservative voters that they’re totally best buds with Trump. There’s no real way to thread that needle without temper tantrums like this where they’re called out for their bullshit and resort to calling their critics “liberals.”
re: #36 Targetpractice
Exactly right. These fuckers think they can skate by on their Trump denial, but when the facts are out there these fuckers think they can play the plausible deniability card, that they don’t actually believe the Trump sewage. Mike Coffman is walking a very thin tightrope in Colorado with his politics.

I suppose that is true. Moreover, not all of the people going to Republican town halls are Democrats. I imagine a Republican voter seeing in person his or her representative call them “liberals” will not leave a good taste in their mouths.

Plus, as Charles Pierce quoted over at his blog:
Turner on Thursday accused one of the organizers for Saturday’s town hall of fraudulently misrepresenting herself and said he would not attend a meeting organized by a group he considers illegitimate. According to Turner, the Dayton Indivisible group pretends to be a constituent community organization when really it is an “arm of the Democratic Party” that is part of national protest efforts.
The GOP is claiming that any oppposition to them is being organized by the DNC, so having a Democrat jump up on the empty stage would legitimize that BS. Best to just let these sorry SOBs dig themselves in deeper by insulting their own constituents or avoiding them altogether.

And what is an “illegitimate group” anyway? Even if his town hall was organised by an Indivisible group:

b) isn’t he smart enough to find organisers aside from those who are generally opposed to the GOP’s agenda?

Same for me but unfortunately this is a pro-military, pro-war country. Trump’s popularity has probably shot up because of these (useless) bombings because his supporters can argue that he’s strong and decisive. We’ll be embroiled in another Iraq pretty soon and those of us who oppose future wars will be told that we’re not patriotic and need to shut the hell up and support our troops. Sigh.

Agree. Especially at the 11th hour when Tim Robins made a plea to vote HRC to avoid Trump. They had something, once, didn’t they?

Susan Sarandon is standing strong in her support for Bernie Sanders and refusing to vote for Hillary Clinton, but in a recent Huffington Post op-ed, ex-husband Tim Robbins begs Bernie supporters to think again.
…
For those waging a protest vote for a third party, Robbins has this to say: “Jill Stein is no Ralph Nader, and Gary Johnson is no Teddy Roosevelt ― and neither of them has shown us any examples of their past advocacy leading to any significant change.”

Too cheap to get his suits tailored. Even Orson Welles looked good in a suit.

Pretty terrible ROI. Typical Trump.

There’s a lot of anger out there at GOPers. Upstate NYers are pissed at new Rep. John Faso because he held an invite-only town hall meeting, which was his way of avoiding tough questions and angry crowds.
The crowds showed up outside the location anyways.

The only Chinese carrier which flies to North Korea has suspended service to Pyongyang.
Air China, the only Chinese carrier with regular services to North Korea, will suspend flights between Beijing and Pyongyang from Monday, China Central Television reported on Friday.
No reason was given for the suspension but flights between the two countries have been put on hold in the past due to lack of passengers.
The announcement came hours after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that a conflict over North Korea could break out “at any moment”.
“Lately, tensions have risen … and one has the feeling that a conflict could break out at any moment,” Wang said. “If a war occurs, the result is a situation in which everybody loses and there can be no winner.”

This goes back to what I was saying/tweeting yesterday. All the people who were cheering that Trump dropped this particular weapon did so without knowing who were the targets, why this weapon was chosen, and what the expected outcome was, to say nothing of what the outcome actually was. Using explosives against tunnel complexes are tricky business, and the US has always had problems dealing with them - they had problems going back to Vietnam, and underground bunkers are a continuing issue for all armies around the world - notoriously difficult to attack, which is why there’s so much spending on specialized weapons designed to bust bunkers.
If you targeted 800 IS fighters, and got only 36, that leans heavily towards a significant failure (unless those 36 turn out to be all leaders). And I’m guessing that the military itself will see it as a failure - though the right wingers will latch on to the 36 killed as proof that it worked.
Trump’s itching to bring back body counts and touting ordnance totals, as opposed to actual results on the ground.
Syria’s air base is back up and running (a MOAB dropped on that base would have wrecked it and disrupted its operation for more than a few hours than the Tomahawk mission).
The MOAB strike didn’t do nearly as much as its proponents thought it would.
Trump’s threats are turning out to be all bark and no bite, and every one of our enemies and rivals are realizing this, and from a MOAB there’s really no where else he can go without nuking someone.
Assad’s continuing to slaughter civilians in Syria (chemical weapons or not, he’s already killed more than 400,000 - only a few hundred were victims of chemical weapons of some form). IS continues slaughtering people all over the place. Nursa is also killing people.
North Korea’s going to do what it’s going to do regardless of what Trump threatens - because North Korea has nothing to lose, and if Trump preemptively strikes the North to disrupt a nuclear test, he’d restart the Korean War in a heartbeat.
There are ways of containment that don’t involve blowing up the world to save it.
Putin’s laughing all the way to the bank with this one.

A new report says Uber used a secret program dubbed “Hell’ to track Lyft drivers to see if they were driving for both ride-hailing services and otherwise stifle competition.
It’s the latest in a series of troubles for Uber, which is also dealing with executive departures and accusations of sexism and sexual harassment.
Only a small group of Uber employees, including CEO Travis Kalanick, knew about the program, according to a story in The Information, which was based on an anonymous source who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Speaking of town hall meetings. Arizona Senator Jeff Flake had a rather testy one last night.
Here is an Arizona TV station’s report. The full town hall is also at YouTube and it is 2 hours long.
Of course the one Trump supporter has to go with the “losers are angry” meme. I wonder if he went around and asked all those people if they voted for Trump. He may be surprised…just like a lot of these Republican Congresspersons are getting surprised.

You must be watching MSNBC because they have been orgasmic all morning over Trump’s presidential pivot.
Our media is nuts. Sometimes I thinks that if some crazy guy off the street chopped off a President’s head with a sword and proclaimed himself President, the media would just both sides it until proclaiming him the real President after he dropped the requisite amount of ordinance somewhere in the Middle East.
Media Hack: Good morning. The country is still whirling over the sudden ascension of President McCrazy following the death of his predecessor under unusual circumstances. Some are even suggesting that President McCrazy should step down from office. Opinions differ and emotions are high on both sides. Joining me in the studio today to discuss this issue are the Vice President of the United States and President McCrazy’s spokesperson Kelly Ann Conway.
Mr. Vice President, you believe that due to the unusual manner he entered office, that President McCrazy should step down.
Vice President: No. I believe that Mr. McCrazy should be in jail pending his murder trial for chopping off the President’s head and that I should be sworn in as President in accordance with US law.
Kelly Ann Conway: Do you see the disrespect here? President McCrazy is the President of the United States and should be addressed as such. The Vice President has been critical of this President and trying to force him out ever since he took office. This level of vitriol on the part of the President’s opponents and the Vice President is truly unprecedented.
Media Hack: So you don’t believe that US law says the Vice President assumes the Presidency upon the death of the President.
Kelly Ann Conway: Of course I do and in the tragic event that President McCrazy dies, the Vice President would become President, but we have a President, President McCrazy. President McCrazy is our President.
Vice President: The rightfully elected President did die. Mr McCrazy killed him. That’s why I should assume the Presidency.
Kelly Ann Conway: I think we’re all forgetting the most important thing here. The sword. The previous President’s head was cut off by a sword. That’s why President McCrazy is the rightful President.
Media Hack: Yes. The Sword. Mr. Vice President, what do you have to say about the sword?
Vice President: What does the sword have to do with…
Media Hack: This just in. President McCrazy has carpet bombed a remote section of the Iraqi desert. More than a dozen B-52s took part and hundreds of thousands of pounds of ordiance were dropped. We have footage. Look at those massively beautiful explosions. I may need a new pair of pants.
Mr. Vice President, I think we can agree that regardless of the circumstances of his election, that President McCrazy became President of the entire country today.
Vice President: Are you brain damaged?
Media Hack: Look at that awesome devastation. It’s huge. That’s all we have time for today. I need to go smoke a cigarette. I’d like to thank the Vice President and Kelly Ann Conway for joining me. God bless the USA and God bless President McCrazy.
I’m not here as often as I had been in the past and am now just finding out we have lost a dear friend. I never met Curious Lurker in person, but considered her a companion in this world. I am saddened. If there is a heaven or a paradise, may your table be full, Aminah.
To all, peace. Love one another, in the end it’s all we have.

All the right wingers are orgasmic over the use of firepower, ignoring that the use of the weapon may not have gotten the results intended.
If your intended target is 800 IS fighters, and you hit 36, that’s less than 5%.
In fact, that’d be a failing rate, which should make military commanders consider whether there were more practical weapons or methods of dealing with the threat at this time.
re: #153 lawhawk
Don’t encourage them, they’re likely to use nukes so they can get them all in one blow.
All it takes is one idiot in the White House and they’ll all act like morons.
….but think of President Trump as the Martin Luther King of health care,” Lord argued. “When I was a kid, President Kennedy didn’t want to introduce the civil rights bill because he said it wasn’t popular, he didn’t have the votes for it, etc. Dr. King kept putting people in the streets in harm’s way to put the pressure on so that the bill would be introduced.”
Lord is not predicting that “random overprivileged white guys in MAGA hats will engage in civil disobedience” to fight healthcare. Rather, Lord suggests that Trump is a great leader who pushes for reform at the risk of getting people hurt like MLK did.
The difference is that MLK inspired people to volunteer to march even at great personal risk. Trump is threatening to hurt people who have not volunteered by messing up their health coverage. Like United Airlines, Trump is volunteering unwilling victims. That is not how any of this works. The verb volunteer is not transitive. You cannot volunteer others.
We cannot let ourselves be tricked by this verbal slight of hand. MLK’s volunteers and Trump’s victims are not analogous just because in both cases people get hurt.

How can they expect any kind of accuracy in the body count (especially so soon) when such a bomb would have completely obliterated any corpses for a rather large radius? Sure we might only find a few corpses in the tunnels but there could still be a lot of dead people that will never be findable.
I was reading up on the Battle of Tora Bora in light of the usage of the MOAB. I found this interesting:
Tora Bora was variously described by the western media to be an impregnable cave fortress housing 2000 men complete with a hospital, a hydroelectric power plant, offices, a hotel, arms and ammunition stores, roads large enough to drive a tank into, and elaborate tunnel and ventilation systems.[30] Both the British and American press published elaborate plans of the base. When presented with such plans in an NBC interview on Meet the Press, Donald Rumsfeld, the US Secretary of Defense, said, “This is serious business, there’s not one of those, there are many of those”.[31][32][33]
When Tora Bora was eventually captured by the U.S., British and Afghan troops, no traces of the supposed ‘fortress’ were found despite painstaking searches in the surrounding areas. Tora Bora turned out to be a system of small natural caves housing at most, 200 fighters. While arms and ammunition stores were found, there were no traces of the advanced facilities claimed to exist.[33][34]
In an interview published by the Public Broadcasting Service, a Staff Sergeant from the U.S. Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) 572, who had been in the Battle of Tora Bora described the caves:
“Again, with the caves, they weren’t these crazy mazes or labyrinths of caves that they described. Most of them were natural caves. Some were supported with some pieces of wood maybe about the size of a 10-foot by 24-foot room, at the largest. They weren’t real big. I know they made a spectacle out of that, and how are we going to be able to get into them? We worried about that too, because we see all these reports. Then it turns out, when you actually go up there, there’s really just small bunkers, and a lot of different ammo storage is up there. - Jeff, Staff Sgt. ODA 572[35]
Tora Bora might be best remembered by the videos of B-52s bombing mountain ranges.

Well, if this is all a bizarre form of “entertainment” for Trump to tickle the fancy of his followers and the media, etc., then I would expect them to use entertainment promoter forms of counting attendance figures as a substitute for casualties in this MOAB bombing.
This was a full house…a sell out…no tickets left…standing room only. Everyone enjoyed the show, the crowd and the promoter are happy.
In other words…the actual figures are never released. The promoter though wants you to know you missed out on a big one so the next time the show is in town you will be sure not to miss it. Heck, everyone else but you was there!

Gillespie used the immigration question to draw a contrast with Northam and Perriello.
“The fact is, Ralph Northam and Tom Perriello, running on the Democrat side, support the establishment of sanctuary cities in the commonwealth of Virginia,” Gillespie said, adding that the Democrats also favor driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants and discounted, in-state tuition for immigrants’ children.
“Sanctuary cities” are cities that don’t do the federal government’s work for free. Prince William County racked up millions of dollars in unreimbursed overtime for its jail because of Corey Stewart’s bullshit.

Kirsten Hunter said her 3-year-old son, Aksel, was forcefully catheterized at the Avera hospital in Pierre in late February after her boyfriend failed a urine analysis. Authorities wanted to have her and her two children tested to see if they also had drugs in their system.
Pierre police officers and a Department of Social Services employee showed up at her home and said if her kids couldn’t produce urine, they would be taken from her. Hunter said her son isn’t potty-trained. So while she and her 5-year-old daughter were able to provide a urine sample, her young son couldn’t.
He was held down and forcibly catheterized by nurses.

It took me a while to find this, but it’s the criminal complaint against Jumana Nagarwala, who is accused of performing female genital mutilation on young girls in Michigan. What stood out for me is how on page 8-9, victim 2 (aged 7) said she’d left one of her winter gloves in the office where the genital mutilation was performed on February 4. The affidavit goes on to state that a search warrant was executed on April 10 and the glove was found—it had the girl’s name on it. I wonder if the girl hid the glove or if the place is so poorly kept up that a glove could remain there for two months. 0_o

Does this idiot not understand the section “reserved” for minority students to get extra assistance was most likely set up because the White students probably historcally refused to help the minority students with their class problems?
I get the feeling she could have easily gotten regular tutoring, or asked other classmates for help. She probably knew that, but went and tried it knowing she would be refused so she could cry about it.
So she claims she was discriminated against for being White.
Grrrrrr. White people created the problems, governments and schools tried to help the minority students and a White student complains they can’t be a part of group that wouldn’t have been needed if there would never been historic discrimination.
I bet she did nothing to make sure there was no need for a special group and worked hard to make sure all those minority students were accepted by all the White students.
She fits in with DeVos and her stupid remarks about Black colleges being exclusive. It probably got her the position as DOE Civil Rights head.
I bet she has a Black friend too. No problem, all race problems are fixed.
I took a break from the news for awhile for own health. I started getting hypertension. I can’t afford daily stress like this.
So I look in today and the front page of the Daily Beast is weighing limited strikes on North Korea that would destroy his nuke program but not go so far as to produce a situation where “Kim’s paranoia might spill out of control.”
This is fucking insanity. North Korea has 10,000 artillery pieces on the border, and Seoul is only 35 miles from the bulk of them. They can rain down thousands of artillery shells per hour on a city with 12,000,000 people.
That doesn’t even count the nuke missile strikes they have promised on Japan.
Not to mention the sarin and tabun nerve agent shells…
Trump is a bully who cannot back down and Kim is a paranoid sociopath who would be killed in a putsch if he backed down.
I’m frightened. I haven’t been this afraid of a war in Korea since 1993. We are one paranoid miscalculation from the bloodiest day in human history.

I know there’s not a lot of love around here for Andrew Sullivan, but at his best, I quite like him. His latest column, though, is not his best. Bashing Hillary some more (with zero distinction between her shortcomings as a campaigner and her overwhelming excellence as an actual leader and thinker). Then an incredibly shallow and Bill O’Reilly-esque meditation on race, about the United fiasco and why race couldn’t possibly have been a factor. Just painful.

I live in that city, so imagine how I feel. Effing around with Syria is one thing, but Trump’s idiocy could really go off the rails in East Asia. Once those dominoes start falling, there’s no way that moron could keep up with the chaos that would be unleashed.

She’s very selective in her views of who needs protection and who doesn’t:
…she arranged for several of Bill Clinton’s accusers to attend a presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Jackson sat with the women in the front of the audience. A few days before the debate, Jackson established Their Lives Foundation. In registration documents, she described two of its purposes as “giving public voice to victims of women who abuse positions of power” and “advocating for and against candidates for political office.”
Less than a week after the debate, Jackson posted on Facebook that her foundation “supports all victims of power abusers,” but labeled Trump’s accusers “fake victims.”
Yeah, what a great choice to head the civil rights office. Spit.

Manhunt suspect Joseph Jakubowski nabbed in western Wisconsin
…A nationwide search was launched last week for Jakubowski, 32, who is suspected of stealing firearms from a Janesville gun shop, including an automatic weapon, and threatening to use them on public officials or a school.
The FBI offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to Jakubowski’s location.
Investigators have said Jakubowski mailed a 161-page manifesto to President Donald Trump that contains extensive, rambling screeds against the government and religion. While there are no specific targets listed, he does suggest he’s willing to carry out violent acts. Officials have said Jakubowski doesn’t affiliate himself with any particular political party in the manifesto.
An unnamed associate recorded Jakubowski mailing the manifesto on the afternoon of April 4. A few hours later, Jakubowski broke into a Janesville weapons store, stole 18 guns, then set his car on fire, authorities have said.
Link to part of manifesto.

re: #233 FormerDirtDart
Trump’s busy pushing the GOP agenda, and the Amtrak cuts are just more of the same.
However, that map doesn’t appear accurate based on the article. The article says that the NEC is going to be unaffected by the cuts, which are to long distance lines. Yet, it shows both the DC-NY and the NY-Boston routes getting cuts.
The article also notes one of the biggest problems for Amtrak is shared lines with freight, and those freight trains take precedence, so Amtrak gets hit with significant delays, which add up on long haul train routes, like say the Lake Shore Limited, or the CA to Chicago or Texas destinations.
Watch localities rise against this nuttiness, and GOPers will have to defend the loss of train routes, that generated revenues for businesses in affected cities.

When I was in college, one of the History profs was a big Civil War buff. He got a group of students together every year, “The Army Of The Cussewago*”. We were each assigned a field commander’s After Action Reports to study, and to try to understand their part of the battle and put it in the context of the battle as a whole. Then, in the spring, we’d pile into a bunch of cars and head down to Virginia, around Culpepper. The battles of Fredericksburg in 1862, Chancellorville in 1863, Spotsylvania in 1864, and The Wilderness in 1865 were all fought on overlapping areas, and at that time in the late 1970s, a lot of it was still farmland and woods, undeveloped. The trenchlines and lunettes for artillery were still in evidence. Indeed, some of the lunettes were still as high as 4-5 feet! We saw one of the first zigzag trenches, which had to be reinvented in WWI. Every day, walking trenchlines and putting parts of each battle in the context of the terrain. And every night, we all took advantage of Virginia’s then-18 drinking age…
The point of all that, is that so much of the war was fought over the same ground repeatedly that the story you relate is not that hard to believe.

So, I brought home this antique tablecloth from my mother’s house. It belonged to my grandmother and is at least 100 years old. We spread it on the table for the Passover seder.
During the seder, my grandkids were bored, as kids tend to be. Suddenly my granddaughter (age 11) blurted out “There are naked people in the tablecloth!”
Well sure enough, we looked, and images of nude people were embroidered into the lace design.

I need to read more on the Civil War. Personally, I’m most interested in reading about immigrant groups especially the Irish and Germans.
One of the great advantages the North had in the war was not only that it started out with millions more able bodied men, but that it could also recruit new soldiers from immigrants coming from Europe, and eventually the North also could start to arm African-Americans, including the South’s own workforce. Based on the 1860 census, the seceding states only had a little over a million white men between the ages of 15-40 to begin with, while the free states had over four million.

Yeah the later battles around Richmond had an eerie resemblance to trench warfare in WWI. I remember hearing that when I learned about Cold Harbor. That sounds like a lot of fun. I really need to make it back up to Gettysburg again. I haven’t been since I Was a kid.

I don’t think we have any multi-generational heir looms unfortunately. My cousin has something that’s been in her mom’s family for generations though. They can trace their family back all the way to William the Conqueror. Makes me feel like a novice since I can “only” trace my surname back 8 generations to the late 1500’s. It’s pretty neat though. The earliest person with a full name and surname in my family line pretty much has my name but in German of course.

That’s one of the reasons our prof. preferred the Virginia battlefields. They weren’t spoiled by tourism.
You can still see evidence of trenchlines in some places at Gettysburg, but they’re only just subtle, unnatural furrows now, rather than clearly apparent. Look North of the Pennsylvania monument, near the 1st Minnesota Volunteers monument.

Yeah. When we last were there in 1979, there was a brand new condo development very close to the zigzag trench. Which means its probably gone now.
Gettysburg is spared that, but at the expense of having only one direction to grow in - East along Rt. 30. The Park Service owns everything else in all directions.

As a kid growing up there, we had a very jaundiced view of tourism and tourists - Bullet Diggers, we called them. For most of the year, the battlefield roads were great shortcuts to avoid going through town. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, those roads would be choked with station wagons full of Bullet Diggers, stopping at every damned one of the 3000+ monuments, including the markers for the right and left flanks of each regiment that fought there.

Or crooked as hell (or incompetent and crooked)
For the past few years, I’ve sat in New Orleans high school classrooms watching students debate the fairest way for government to raise revenue. They role-play — first as management consultants advising legislators; then as lawmakers, weighing what to tax: property vs. sales vs. income. Are there limits on what or who can be taxed? Is a flat tax or a progressive rate structure fairer? Sometimes their discussions are heated. These teenagers, however, have an edge that many adults don’t: basic tax literacy. Guided by Tulane law students, the high schoolers explore different philosophies and methods of taxation through TaxJazz, a program I began in 2013. Students who take the week-long course study issues of fairness and technical matters such as bases and rate structures. They examine key concepts such as the difference between marginal rates (the percentage of tax paid on the last dollar of income) and effective rates (the average percentage of tax paid). They learn that narrower tax bases, such as sales tax, need higher rates than broader bases, such as income taxes, to raise equivalent amounts of revenue. They discover that changing the method of taxation increases how much some taxpayers owe and decreases that amount for others.
If more people knew what these students know, we’d have a far more reasonable tax debate and better tax laws.

re: #378 Timothy Watson
I’m glad to see that these students are learning something useful.
However, the underlying notion that factual knowledge of taxation realities would improve the politics of taxation is farcical — Republicans are impervious to both reality and reason on this point.
