Today in FCC news.
1) The FCC just repealed a 42-year-old rule blocking broadcast media mergers
2) Sorry, poor people: The FCC is coming after your broadband plans
3) Another vote today will make it easier for telcos to shut off old copper networks even when they don’t replace the networks with fiber or other equivalent service. This could leave consumers with only mobile service instead of wired phone and Internet access.
And that’s just today.
The cops thought otherwise:
This is actually a fairly common belief among Texas students, especially those from the rural gentry.

I just had the displeasure of trying to order POTS service (which this residence had a decade or so ago) and was told by AT&T that they could not provide it to me “at this time”.
So now it’s off to write a letter to my state’s Public Services Commission asking them to look into this issue - if I had POTS once before, they should deliver me POTS now for fucks sake….

Maybe because Luther can’t prove that he wasn’t involved, especially going up against the now-POtuS, the full weight of the US government, and his propaganda arm; without something conclusive and irrefutable like video, Campbell would be ripped to shreds.
If there were video, it’d been out way before now, perhaps during the campaign; it would have been a KO.

They DON’T believe it. It’s the lie as shibboleth again, a identify friend or foe signal designed to provoke a response. They know he’s a liar, and they don’t care because they’re all liars who lie to advance a very specific agenda marked by white christian atavism. The first goal in telling the lie is to hear if it is accepted and to then know the other person isn’t part of the secular or liberal “other.” Trump’s “honesty” works especially well in this regard because it’s SO demonstrably counterfactual that to let such a contention slide requires a deliberately conscious buy-in on the part of the person hearing it.

They weren’t forced to listen to this — they gravitated to it because many are racist to the core and they want to believe that the problem was the “other” — those of different races, ethnicity, religion. This is nothing new: Slavery - Jim Crow - anit-Semitism - Fascism - Nazism all existed before the modern age of mass entertainment, before Fox News, the Koch Brothers, the Mercers. There have been darker days in our lifetime. In the 1960’s our cities were burning and we were in a hopeless conflict in VietNam. The worst sin is despair since it allows evil to conquer — and last week’s election shows that we can have hope.

As bad as all that propaganda is, I wonder how much of the problem boils down to our brains simply not having evolved to deal with the world we’ve created. Wow, it looks like Remington is totally boned.
Following the spate of mass shootings over the last several months, it has become clear that Congress and the Trump Administration have no plans to enact new gun control regulations. That might be welcome news for gun enthusiasts, but it’s actually a bad omen for gun manufacturers.
Indeed, this morning, Remington Outdoor disclosed a dramatic plunge in earnings for the third quarter of 2017. Adjusted EBITDA fell by 78% year-over-year to $7.4 million, on net sales of $154 million, down 30%.
The “Trump Slump” in gun sales has had a punishing effect on the stocks of US-based firearms manufacturers. Publicly-traded Sturm Ruger & Co and American Outdoor Brands have shed 27% and 43% in market capitalization, respectively, since mid-June, as consumer urgency to stockpile has receded under the unified Republican-led administration and Congress.
But the stakes are arguably higher for Remington, since its highly levered balance sheet means it has a much smaller cash flow buffer to help absorb declines. Remington, also known as Freedom Group and taken private by Cerberus Capital Management in 2007 for $370 million, is likely to burn cash this year thanks to its high interest costs. That in turn will make it difficult to refinance its debtload, which has ballooned to $964 million and is scheduled to mature across 2019 and 2020.
I’m glad Remington is suffering now, in 2007 they bought Marlin and in 2011 they shut down production in North Haven Connecticut and moved it to Kentucky. Remington fired all the old union machinists without realizing that the true manufacturing settings and specs had all been kept in their heads and had purposefully never been written down, which resulted in fucking up the entire line of what had previously been the best lever action rifles a person could buy.

“He came in close, put his bare feet on top of mine so I could not move, leaned his body against me, and began quick, discreet thrust back and forth against my body. I felt his penis on my hip through his thin pajamas,” Lysette says.
Lysette pushed Tambor away and “rolled my eyes.” Billings was not present for this alleged incident, and several crewmembers were nearby “but they were focused on their jobs. It was discreet. If you were behind Jeffrey you might have thought he was giving me a hug.”
The actress, who is transgender, is the second on the Transparent payroll to come forward with allegations that Tambor, 73, has subjected them to sexual harassment, sexual assault and generally abusive behavior on the set of the critically adored series.
The first accuser, Van Barnes, is a trans woman who worked as Tambor’s personal assistant, and whose allegations have led to an internal investigation by Amazon Studios. She has previously appeared on E!’s I Am Cait.

Wow, it looks like Remington is totally boned.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump’s busy tweeting about Franken’s groping, but is silent over Moore’s sexual assaults on minors.
It figures. Trump wont go after a fellow sex predator, especially one of the same political persuasion.
It’s the New GOP Testament: 13th Commandment - Thou Shalt Not Attack a Fellow GOP Sex Predator.
If you’re a Republican calling for Franken to resign you better be doing the same for Trump. In fact, you elected Trump to WH knowing he was a sex predator.
— lawhawk (@lawhawk) November 17, 2017
But GOP plays by different rules than everyone else. They’ll support sex predators and child molesters while demanding harsh penalties when Democrats do far less.
— lawhawk (@lawhawk) November 17, 2017
The GOP doesn’t care about the double standards or the hypocrisy. They just want the power and ability to gut the safety net while shifting the burdens on to those least able to endure them.
I know I sound like a broken record here, but the tax scheme the GOP is trying to ram through is the typical GOP vaporware/malware combination we’ve seen from the GOP for years. GOP tax policy is voodoo economics, and their current version takes both Trumpcare and mixes it with the trickle down bullshit to give the worst possible outcomes to all but the richest of Americans.
So while Pence and Trump claim that this is a huge tax break for all Americans, the fact that everyone but the richest of Americans has to do math to see if they come out ahead is telling that you have no idea if you’ll be seeing a tax break or a hike.
Complicating matters is the attempt to include Trumpcare in the tax scheme, so that someone might see a physical tax cut, but ends up paying far more because their health benefits have been gutted.
The GOP sees this as a feature, not a bug.
They’re more than willing to eliminate tax breaks the middle class relies on, while creating new tax breaks for stuff like owning a private aircraft.
The GOP isn’t even trying to obscure its agenda.
This is straight up redistribution of wealth to the richest of Americans while all the burdens flow the other way.

In other news - is it possible to be too big an asshole for Fox News? Apparently so.
Kiss frontman Gene Simmons—until this week, a favorite guest on Fox News and Fox Business Network programs, which couldn’t get enough of his supposedly outrageous rock-star antics mixed with conservative politics—has been banned for life from the right-leaning cable channels.
Fox finally had enough of Simmons after he crudely insulted female Fox staffers, taunted them and exposed his chest, and otherwise behaved like the “demon” character he plays onstage. Management was not amused, and Simmons’s photograph was promptly posted Wednesday at the security entrance of the company’s Manhattan headquarters along with a “do-not-admit” advisory.
Simmons’s publicist didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jebus man, you have it bad.
If you were a general facing an invasion, I’m thinking you would gather the troops on the ships and abandon the country before they got totally ashore so you can fight them.
How the hell did The British manage to not keep this country?
What the hell do you think is being done? Writing Congress isn’t going to work forever, writing the FCC isn’t doing a bit of good, blathering on websites isn’t going to do any good. I’ve got wonderfully specific plans for how to save the country, and every time I mention ‘em here, everyone yells about the use of railroad spikes, crowbars, and pushpins.
The fact is we have no plans at all for how to fix this beyond “1. Write Congress; 2. (a miracle occurs); 3. America is saved.” Stopgap measures cannot work forever, and pollyanna optimism is only going to get innocent people killed or enslaved.
And abandoning the country is something else we should be making serious plans for. We won’t be able to save many, but we should try to save those who are worth saving. I want my family and friends and favorite writers/artists/musicians to escape before it’s too late, even if I can’t go with them. But we don’t even consider that because we’re too arrogant/stupid/suicidal to consider how bad things are going to get.
I swan, I don’t know what’s wrong with some of y’all.
I’ll make an observation about this moment in time.
Although the guys who know what they’re doing, like Harvey Weinstein, are a big problem and need to be dealt with harshly, I think another, maybe more important outcome will be if women can tell men openly, “That’s not okay. It made me feel degraded.” And for men to be able to say, “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize I was doing that. Thanks for telling me. I’ll try not to do it again.”
Looking back on years of working in an industry which very much believed “We’re different! Women in biotech are tough! They don’t mind the jokes!”, I wonder how many more women would be in leadership roles in this business if they hadn’t just gotten the shits of dealing with puerile coworkers and found another line of work.
And I also believe that most men are well meaning, and if we realized the feelings we’re engendering we’d be more circumspect.
This is why details are important.
This is an opinion piece by a Larry O’Conner.***
MediaITE - MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt ‘Reports’ Franken Was ‘Not Actually Groping’ Leeann Tweeden
As the breaking story of Al Franken’s lewd behavior toward Leeann Tweeden during a USO tour in 2006 was developing Thursday, MSNBC’s Capitol Hill Correspondent Kasie Hunt reported to viewers that Franken was “not actually groping” Tweeden in the famous photo that shook the political and media landscape. (Newsbusters)
KASIE HUNT: We are starting to see some immediate reaction to this on Capitol Hill to those allegations and you covered what she had to say pretty well. In a nutshell, she said she was on this USO tour that Al Franken wrote — he was a comedian then, not a Senator — wrote into the script that he should kiss her. Tried to get her to rehearse it. It was uncomfortable. She avoided him after that. Then he took a picture, which his office now says was of a joke, that showed him potentially — not actually groping, but mock-groping her while she was asleep.
Not only is this “reporting” inaccurate, Hunt seems to present a political argument that even Franken is not making in his own defense.
“Potentially — not actually groping, but mock-groping” is how Hunt, the reporter delivered the news. How does she know this? What facts have been presented to support this? I mean, I suppose it could turn out this was “potentially — not actually groping, but mock-groping” but no one has presented that argument as of now, except, of course, MSNBC’s Capitol Hill Correspondent Kasie Hunt.
Even worse, Hunt also characterized Tweeden’s description of the direct physical assault that culminated with Franken forcing his tongue into her mouth against her will in a completely inaccurate way.
Hunt reported that Tweeden claims Franken “wrote into the script that he should kiss her. Tried to get her to rehearse it. It was uncomfortable.” Was it uncomfortable?
Let’s please take a moment to read exactly how Tweeden described this incident:
He repeated that actors really need to rehearse everything and that we must practice the kiss. I said ‘OK’ so he would stop badgering me. We did the line leading up to the kiss and then he came at me, put his hand on the back of my head, mashed his lips against mine and aggressively stuck his tongue in my mouth.
I immediately pushed him away with both of my hands against his chest and told him if he ever did that to me again I wouldn’t be so nice about it the next time.
I walked away. All I could think about was getting to a bathroom as fast as possible to rinse the taste of him out of my mouth.
I felt disgusted and violated.
But if someone only watched MSNBC in the middle of the day Thursday and relied on their Capitol Hill Correspondent to report the news of this story, they wouldn’t know those details. They’d think that Tweeden felt “uncomfortable” after Franken forced himself on her, held her from the back of the head, and forced his tongue into her mouth.
This all happened on the same day MSNBC’s John Heilemann called Fox News a “totally corrupt enterprise that has nothing to do with journalism or principle and everything to do with advancing an ideological agenda.” He said that on MSNBC, the same network that featured Kasie Hunt’s reporting - not actual reporting but mock-reporting.
This is an opinion piece. The views expressed in this article are those of just the author.

You’re overlooking the obvious plan—doing the classical Democratic election thing, but doing it better. The Trump victory can be seen as an inevitable outcome of disengaging large numbers of people from the process that got us to 2008. If we learn from that, the setback is temporary. If we don’t, the only alternative is revolution and technology has put us beyond the age of romantic revolution.

Recall George Carlin’s quote: ‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.’
Now combine that with an electoral system that that gives the stupid half a majority of the electoral vote and you have Trump in a nutshell…
You know what gives me hope?
There was a piece I saw on TV the other day that I can’t find that had a panel of Trump voters asked how they feel about Trump now. Every one of them had some pretty pointed criticisms of Trump and the GOP and how they felt bad they voted for him.
Do a You Tube search on Trump Voter Regret. There are a lot of voters expressing regret. But most of the videos are at best two months old. The one I saw the other day was new and even more critical and full of conflicted people.
There will be more and more, especially as they learn what the GOP is doing to them with the ‘tax reform.’
What was it, 170,000 votes that turned the election? I’m thinking there are already 500,000 that realized they fucked up spread over three states.
Yeah. This is what gives me hope…rose colored glasses and all.
People make mistakes. Then they hopefully learn. I am not going to abandon them. I am going to try to help them learn. As many as I can…away from here.

They’re colluding with the Russians, the Chinese, and other enemies of the US. They’re working to prevent the “wrong” people from voting, to destroy the mission of the FCC, and the FDA.
But mainly they’re working to enrich the Trumps and everyone like them at the expense of everyone else. They’re doing this every single day, seven days a week, and most of it never gets noticed or reported by the MSM.

Modern democracy requires a literate and educated electorate. When that goes downhill, democracy suffers. And as long as education is not seen as an investment in society but as an overhead cost that is to be kept to a minimum, then things will continue to go downhill

A Panama tower carries Trump’s name and ties to organized crime
When Ivanka Trump flew here in 2006 to push her family’s latest business project — an oceanfront steel and glass tower called the Trump Ocean Club International Hotel and Tower, shaped like a sail and designed to be one of the tallest buildings in Latin America — a Brazilian real estate salesman named Alexandre Ventura Nogueira says he was ready with a sales pitch.
[…]
“The agreement was, I had a week to sell 100 units,” Ventura said in a recent interview with NBC News. “I said, ‘I’m going to do better, I’m going to sell without telling (the buyers) the price.”
Ventura did sell the initial units, and later hundreds more. He is now a fugitive. In May 2009, Ventura was arrested in Panama for real estate fraud, unrelated to the Trump project. Mauricio Ceballos, a former financial crimes prosecutor in Panama who investigated Ventura, said that dozens of complaints against Ventura crossed his desk accusing him of double- and triple-selling apartments, both at the Trump Ocean Club and other developments.
Ventura eventually fled Panama while out on bail. He denied having defrauded his clients but admitted to NBC News that he has participated in money laundering on behalf of corrupt Panamanian politicians, unrelated to the building project.

The power of democracy has never been to elect good government. Trump is only the worst of a long line of terrible people that have been democratically elected the world over.
The power of democracy is to get rid of bad government. It lies in the peaceful transfer of power and the ability to get rid of corrupt and evil people without resorting to force of arms. The most dangerous thing about the current regime is not the evil things they do on a daily basis, despite how awful they are. It is the willingness of Bannon and those like him to end the rule of law and deconstruct the state; to declare themselves above the law and prevent any transfer of power.
It is not a coincidence that Putin is heavily associated with this regime. The Russian style of dictatorship with sham elections is their short term goal. Note the ‘short term’ part of that - that is their goal within the timeframe of the Trump presidency. Bannon believes that the American people and the centres of power in America are ready to accept it, not in ten years, not in five years, but today.

By Andrew Kaczynski and Chris Massie, CNN
“…Moore’s wife, Kayla Moore, who has served as the president of the foundation since 2013, also shared the video on her personal Facebook and on the wall of the Friends of Roy Moore Facebook group the same day the foundation shared the video.
Opening and closing to ominous music, the video itself presents a version of the widespread but baseless conspiracy theory that Obama, a Christian, is secretly a Muslim. The video shows the then-President praising the historical legacy of the Islamic faith and the contributions of Muslims to the United States and American culture, while displaying text asking if he had ever praised America or Christianity in “similar glowing words.”

Correct
Moore’s again attacking the women who have accused him of abusing them. Moore’s wife then comes out and attacks these women again, trotting out another bunch of women who claim to vouch for Moore’s character.
Yeah, doesn’t take away from any of these women’s claims - not that AL GOPers give a shit. Nothing in the accusers’ stories have been rebutted or found inconsistent with what we know about Moore to date.
That there are other women who haven’t been abused/harassed doesn’t mean a goddamned thing.

What if Trump is Rick Sanchez and this whole thing is a setup to separate Ivanka and Jared? It’s not like Rick wouldn’t wipe out an entire planet to do it.
It strikes me that the timeline window is shrinking rapidly…
if the “tax reform” bill dies in the Senate, then the GOP dismantling of the US for their co-owners, Russian and the Conservative Rich is slowed considerably, which means that the domestic end of the stool will fail (the deplorables, the wealthy and the Russians each comprising a leg) and the whole thing topples over because Mueller and the investigations will end this administration, the GOP and their media empire.
Putin still wins because it will take decades to repair what was once built and the trust that was lost. That takes time and a commitment of leaders to actually want to fix things and what get fixed first? the Supreme Court? the voting rights? pay equality? tax codes? guns? the government agencies themselves?
so many tasks and all of them a priority… and this doesn’t even take into account that Putin wont stop and who’s to say that the Chinese and any number of other potential players, (the Isrealis, The Indians, The Saudis, The Iranians, etc) don’t also buy themselves into the great game.
going to be an incredible next 360 days…
LA radio station: We tipped off ‘news partners’ before publishing Franken allegations
A Los Angeles radio station is pushing back on reports that former Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone appeared to know sexual misconduct allegations involving Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) were coming hours before they were made public.
In a statement Friday, KABC said a “very small group” of employees discussed the best day for host Leeann Tweeden to come forward with her account of being forcibly kissed and groped by Franken in 2006.
re: #95 Bubblehead II
Ummm, given all the discussion that has gone on here today about sexual harassment, that comment is, shall we say to put it mildly, a bit tone deaf. Ah fuck it. Why the fuck did you think it’s O.K to post such a misogynistic piece of crap like that? Here of all places?
OK, first I request no one jump down my throat here, just trying to learn so I don’t make the same mistake again. I’m watching a video, I see someone who is wearing what looks to me to be uncomfortably tight to the point of restricting circulation pants. It makes me think of the scene in Dazed and Confused where the one girl has to have her friend help her zip up her jeans with a pair of pliers, thus the comment.
Now I see people commenting on how people are dressed all day long here on LGF, suits too big, ties too long, heels are too high, seams aren’t straight, looks like a Bond villain, looks like that shirt just came out of a hamper etc.
Am I just not allowed to comment on how a woman is dressed at all? I can assure you if Stephen Colbert decided to wear skinny jeans to do his show people would be commenting. So where was I out of bounds?
re: #304 piratedan
If the tax bill dies, the ramifications will be pretty extreme.
We already know that if Republicans can’t get it done, they’ll lose most if not all of their big donors. Without that flow of cash, every single Republican will be a potential targeting via primary and third-party opposition, which will only serve to split the vote if Democrats are organized enough to get people to the polls.
And if the tax bill fails, it’s almost certain that Trump’s support in Congress will evaporate pretty quickly. It’s the only reason they’re keeping quiet and letting him be the asshole that he is. Take away the promise of all that campaign cash, and they have no reason whatsoever to keep his crazy old ass around. Impeachment then becomes a real possibility, even without a Dem majority in the House.
This is why they’re so desperate to get the tax bill signed into law - they could be facing extinction as a party if it doesn’t happen.

Failure of tax deform, which looks likely, means the Republicans are useless to everyone except the deplorables, who themselves are useless.
Looks like Trump appears useless to Putin now, because he can’t get much of anything done for the Kremlin. The Russian government thinks that every country operates like they do, and institutions are always just shams, so they look bewildered about why Trump can’t just lock up his enemies and ignore his adversaries. Veselnitskaya (the Russian lawyer) and Kislyak (the ambassador) seem to be tossing Trump publicly under the bus, and I’m guessing Moscow thinks Pence or Mueller are planning a coup and they could get in good with the new guy.

Similarly, Trump doesn’t understand that he cannot run the US government like his businesses, where his word is the final word and he can’t summarily dismiss people like he did on TV. I think he’ll learn that in a hurry if the tax bill doesn’t go through.

Well, time to cut the blather. I have some things to do outside trying to wrap up my outside dormer rebuild on This Old House.
Not to mention the people who probably regret voting for Gary Johnson and Jill Stein.
Aspersions on his asparagus!
re: #238 Skip Intro
They’re succeeding in the dark recesses by appointing cabinet members to destroy what they’re supposed to protecting, appointing incompetent hack RWNJ attorneys to lifetime positions on the bench, gutting our connections with what were once our allies, they’re using the Heartland Institute to dismantle all activities aimed at planning for climate change, let alone trying to do something to stop it.
That’s what they’re doing and they’re damned good at it. If anyone here has a realistic idea how to stop this I’d sure like to hear about it.
We use the courts to battle the illegal stuff, then work to win back Congress in 2018, then the White House in 2020. And a big part of that is winning as many local elections as possible, so Democrats have a government role in protecting voter rights and redistricting after the 2020 census.
Because I wasn’t pay attention, I missed the release of Your Name on dvd. It came out the 7th. I bought a copy online this morning - I actually work up and thought “Did it come out yet?” - through Best Buy so I can pick it up at the local store after work.

I see on FB that Jim Wright spent a lot of words (but then, when doesn’t he?) trying to dispel the notion that we can tell from the photo that Franken didn’t actually grope Tweeden. “The camera only catches an instant, we don’t know what happened in the seconds before and after, etc.”
Here’s the thing - Tweeden only asserts that he groped her in her sleep based on the picture. She didn’t say she woke up to find his hands on her. She specifically states that the only way she knew about it was seeing the picture later. Unless she’s an amazingly deep sleeper, in an upright position in an airplane in mid flight, I’m pretty sure any actual contact would have awakened her.
We’ve all agreed that it’s an unfunny, degrading joke, but like writing on somebody’s face while they sleep, it only works - the extent it works at all - if they stay asleep. That’s why he’s posed with his hands hovering above her chest, and why you wouldn’t actually grab.
Now, if Tweeden said, “I woke up to find his hands on my breasts”, that would be a WHOLE ‘nother matter. But that’s not the accusation.

I get that and that is why I am asking because it seemed to bother a number of people and I’d rather not stumble in to it again. Just saying it was tone deaf doesn’t help me understand why because to me it seemed pretty innocent. What exactly was bothersome so I don’t do it again?

re: #335 Dave In Austin

Let me start by saying that I find trophy hunting hard to defend at all, and really hard to defend as a pastime for rich fucks to prove their manliness.
That said, a number of poor nations in Africa have populations of animals that need to be managed, because they have human populations that need to live, to grow food, etc. and wildlife populations cannot grow beyond certain limits without negative consequences. At the same time, these countries don’t have much money.
So, they have a resource for which people will pay, and a need for cash. Trophy hunting addresses both. If we want to end trophy hunting, we need to come up with some equally lucrative way for these countries to use these resources, and not merely tell them they have to stay poor because we like elephants and lions.

My read is that commenting on women’s clothing, particularly in a way that seems sexual (which how tight the pants are is generally regarded as), is going to be a landmine and is better off avoided. You might have done a little better if you’d included the movie reference in the first post, but I don’t know.
I get why you’re asking and I wish I had better guidance to give you. I think the most I can say is the initial comment perhaps came across as more sexual than you intended because of the wording you chose and the events over the past day.
