I know what you mean. There’s a lot wrong with Moore but this really the tip of the iceberg. He opposed all the amendments post Bill of Rights, he thinks the slavery era was a great time, he violated twice his oath on the Supreme Court of Alabama, etc. That this is even close is depressing and I’m sorry Alabama lizards but it says a lot about Alabama because Doug Jones is the kind of man every state should be sending to office.

But also the American religious right, Roy Moore dating high school girls in his early 30’s is no big deal and those girls should have felt honored to have him want them. I genuinely feel that the religious right is the most poisonous and disgusting force in American politics and I blame Reagan, the Bushes, the GOP as a whole, and now Trump for pandering to them. They have to look at the bigger picture: by expelling Moore, they could present the image of still having some shreds of moral decency, and in two years, their base will vote for for the Republican senate appointee nonetheless.

That’s a good point; if the Alabama base will vote for Moore, they’ll pretty much vote for anyone.
The proposed change in the law wouldn’t come into effect until after the turn of the year, so timing would be crucial; they need to keep Moore on just long enough, say until mid-January or so, then give him the boot. Governor Ivey could then appoint someone to fill the seat until 2020.
I do wonder how Moore’s supporters would react. Personally, I think they’d be livid, but then again, it’s enough time between early next year and November 2020 for tempers to cool.

It just occurred to me after reading that Cracked article. Rather than wager in the casinos, Donnie bets bigly on extravagant projects intending to outdo the experts at their own game, and win big. And like a gambler with an addiction, he screws up each time. If it weren’t for his real estate to leverage, his quasi-famous name, and his knack of licensing it for others to make money from, he’d be on Skid Row.

It’s a close match. From the WIkipedia entry:
William “Willy” Loman: The salesman. He is 62 years old and unstable, insecure, and self-deluded. Willy tends to re-imagine events from the past as if they are real. I don’t know if it has been published as a book.
Here is a great TV version done back in the 80s with Dustin Hoffman as Willy Loman (“low”man as in down the pecking order), John Malkovich as son Biff, and Kate Reid as Willy’s wife.

Arrest in notorious 1980 slaying of Antioch teen Suzanne Bombardier
Antioch police announced Monday that they have arrested a suspect in the 1980 kidnapping and killing of a teenager whose story briefly jolted the nation and roiled a quiet East Bay suburb.
Mitchell Lynn Bacom, 63, of Antioch was arrested just before 5 p.m. Monday for allegedly kidnapping 14-year-old Suzanne Bombardier while she was babysitting her nieces on a summer night 37 years ago and killing her.
Police detained Bacom outside of his home on the 300 block of West Madill Street in Antioch. Bacom was an acquaintance of the Bombardier family at the time the crime was committed, police said, without disclosing further details.
This is the California Antioch.

It was troubling to hear on Chris Hayes last night that Macron has funded top US climate scientists, who have now relocated to France. It’s good for the world that their work will continue but it’s bad for the United States for us to lose their technical expertise.
Although I do support the Trump initiative to build a base on the Moon and from there go to Mars, how are we going to accomplish that without funding? The tax legislation will guarantee we won’t have the financial resources. And how will we manage if our top scientists are likely to be recruited by countries who look to the future, instead of wanting a return to the 1950’s?

Three villages in Changbai County and two cities in the northeastern border province of Jilin, have been designated for the camps, according to the document from China Mobile. The document appeared last week on Weibo, a microblogging site.
The camps are an unusual, albeit tacit, admission by China that instability in North Korea is increasingly likely, and that refugees could swarm across the Tumen River, a narrow ribbon of water that divides the two countries.
[…]
The areas designated for the refugee camps were on state-owned land, and temporary housing had already been constructed at several sites, according to a local businessman who requested anonymity for fear of angering the local government.
Three county villages were named in the document as locations for the camps. The cities of Tumen and Hunchun will also house refugees, according to the businessman.
Tumen and Hunchun have for 20 years received defectors, who have managed to escape from North Korea into China. Many of those defectors travel on to Southeast Asia and eventually to South Korea.
[…]
Last week, the Jilin Daily, a provincial newspaper, advised residents on how to react in case of a nuclear explosion or radioactive fallout.
The advice included washing off radioactive dust from exposed body parts and shoes, and taking iodine tablets. The article noted that when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945, more than 70,000 people were killed. Modern weapons are many times more powerful.
[…]
“It is highly possible that there is a conflict between North Korea and the United States now,” said Zhang Liangui, a professor of international strategic research at the Communist Party’s Central Party School. “What China does here is to be prepared for any kind of situation happening on the Korean Peninsula.”
In another sign of increased tensions, South Korea said on Monday that it would join the United States and Japan for a drill to practice tracking missiles launched from North Korean submarines.

re: #212 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
should it come to that point, ti will be too late, just as it was too late in 1861
Arguably it is already too late and that we’re simply going through the motions of the Code Blue crash cart team to the corpse of the 1st Republic.
The real question is will there be a coup by those who want to establish a 2nd Republic now or if the coup will come from the right and create the kind of neo-feudal corporate based kingdom out of Cyberpunk SF? After which the question is how long the interregnum be? A generation? A century? Permanent?
At this point, these are just thoughts and hopefully all wrong. Today’s results and how they’re responded to by both sides will tell the real tale.
re: #213 Hecuba’s daughter
And that’s what we are becoming - a kleptocracy ruled by a kakistocracy.
The only western Mars expedition that might happen will be by Elon Musk.
Really though, the moon base & martian colony will both be achieved by the PRC without any help from the west.

In Birmingham they love the Gov’nor, boo-hoo-hoo
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you, tell the truthBasically, you can still love your country or state even if it elected a bad person. Also, that people in Alabama don’t like to be told what to do but there were still things about the state worth loving.
That’s how I see it anyway.
Fun fact: Birmingham was actually the least supportive part of the state for George Wallace. Which is why Interstate 65 went nearly to Birmingham, then resumed north of Birmingham.

Oh, it’s the Clintons: “Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked…”
Let’s go through this one more time.
We have a very unpopular president who was elected by a fluke of our electoral system, not by popular vote, but also do to some apathy by those who are a lot more awake now. We’re not really sitting at the edge of the 1860s or 1930s Germany.
As for the election today, who put money down on Alabama being close after Sessions was put in as AG? It is Alabama. They’re already prone to electing people who go after their daughters; Moore got elected as judge twice, once after being thrown out of office. If he wins, what is really different? Not the Senate, and not Alabama.
Almost every district here in Texas is getting a Democrat on the ballot. I don’t expect most of them to win, but that is a game changer, and, if it’s being repeated everywhere else in the country, is a huge game changer.
Please don’t get caught in the LGF bubble and talk yourselves into a political depression.

Rove is still an evil genius for the “forged” Air National Guard docs.
I read an article on Bannon, I did not know that he made his reputation and fortune as a TV producer by owning a piece of Seinfeld, which netted him tens of millions of dollars, whereupon he decided to launch a career in political journalism.
That had nothing to do with “TV producing”, it was part of his banking work. While at Goldman, he helped finance/broker the sale of rerun-syndication rights, getting a share of the deal instead of cash payment.

Why is this not shocking in the least? Democracy in its Third World best.
Daily Kos summarizes Trump’s list of people exonerating him of sexual assault:
And on Tuesday, Sanders sent her list of eyewitnesses to Think Progress. It will surprise no one to learn that much like Trump, the list is a bad joke.
There’s Katie Blair, who disputes the claim of Samantha Holvey, who says that Trump “personally inspected each of the contestants” at the 2006 Miss USA pageant. Blair wasn’t in the 2006 Miss USA pageant.
Melissa Young is eyewitness number two against Samantha Holvey, with the White House describing her as “someone who ‘Also Competed In The 2005 Miss USA Pageant.’” Except Samantha Holvey didn’t compete in the 2005 Miss USA Pageant.
And eyewitness number three is Anthony Gilberthorpe, a confirmed liar, who “claimed to be an eyewitness disputing the account of Jessica Leeds, who says Trump groped her on an airplane in 1980.” Gilberthorpe said that he perfectly remembers watching Trump and Leeds on an airplane 37 years ago, that nothing happened AND that Leeds, “then in her 30s, confided in him (an 18-year-old stranger) that she wanted to marry Trump.”
And there you have it. The eyewitnesses who totally back up Donald Trump’s claims that he’s not a vile, disgusting pig and serial sexual assaulter.

Today is erection, er, election day for Roy Moore. It could be the best day of his life since that frag failed to go off under his bed in ‘Nam, or the worst since an irate father chased him out of ‘Bama and forced him to hide out in Australia.
Alabama voters should be reminded that Roy was an MP company commander. He has admitted to discovering a child brothel that was catering to American servicemen. He had it within his power to raid the place, shut it down and rescue the victims. That the notoriously moralistic Bible thumper did not do so speaks volumes about this real values.

re: #312 Belafon
Consider how much Republicans have had to spend to try to get Moore elected. Yeah, he has his issues, but it should be a safe Republican seat. His issues have made this a tossup, but it wouldn’t be if the GOP wasn’t messed up.
Now, think about the panic Republicans are having if their big donors say “nope” to giving them money. They don’t have the small donor base the Democrats do. This is why they’re willing to cut off their own noses for their donors.
And it is costing them two ways; money and reputation.
No doubt about it, this is a costly election for the Republicans.

But that is how a wingnut thinks. If one tiny thing is wrong it is all wrong and must be dismissed.
Meanwhile Trump lies at every turn and that is fine and dandy…he’s just making a point and talks about things like they do.
You can’t defeat that dishonesty. You have to beat them at the voting booth and with facts that hopefully reach the people that can be reached so they too come to the voting booth.

Acosta asked: “Mr. President, what did you mean when you said that Kirsten Gillibrand would do anything for a campaign contribution?”
Good question! The president turned his head with a glare and proceeded to exit. No answer.
Later on, Acosta told CNN colleague Wolf Blitzer about how desperately the White House wanted to sidestep that uncomfortable encounter. “In the moments before I asked the president the question in the Roosevelt Room as he was signing the National Defense Authorization bill, the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, pulled me aside — this was prior to me asking that question of the president. And she warned me that if I asked the president a question at this pool spray, as we call them, that she could not promise that I would be allowed into a pool spray again,” said Acosta. “Wolf, this was a direct threat coming from the press secretary to me, warning me not to ask a question and, of course, I went ahead and asked the question anyway and the president did not respond. But Wolf, as you know, we don’t respond to threats, we’re not going to be intimidated.”

Google returns this recipe which seems close to the ones my (Slovak side) family used to make.
Potato Pancakes - Zemiakove placky
2 pounds/1 kg whole potatoes.
1 egg.
4-5 cloves of garlic.
1/2 tsp pepper.
1 tsp majoram - optional.
1 cup/240 ml milk.
6 tbs flour.
3/4 tsp salt.
Boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water until you can just pierce them with a fork. Drain and let them cool for a minute or two.
Peel the potatoes and grate them on a fine grater.
Add egg, smashed garlic, pepper, salt, majoran, milk and the flour. Batter should be a thick liquid.
Preheat a crepe pan or a nonstick pan to medium low heat. Grease it and add about a ladle’s worth of batter. Fry 4 minutes on each side.
Enjoy.

Tip. I have always been told you want ‘old’ potatoes. Ones that are slightly getting soft. Hard new potatoes do not work so well.
I don’t make them, just going on what I remember from and uncle that was excellent at it.

On a similar note, Charlie Chaplin put it this way:
Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost….
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.
From The Great Dictator.

And you know how Charlie Chaplin was treated by the U.S. Government in his later years.
He was part of the Un-American Activities Committee blacklist.
So for those that think this era of politics is messed up, just remember nothing is new under the sun.
This is from his Wiki Page under the sub heading of on of his last movies “Limelight.”
Chaplin decided to hold the world premiere of Limelight in London, since it was the setting of the film.[281] As he left Los Angeles, he expressed a premonition that he would not be returning.[282] At New York, he boarded the RMS Queen Elizabeth with his family on 18 September 1952.[283] The next day, attorney general James P. McGranery revoked Chaplin’s re-entry permit and stated that he would have to submit to an interview concerning his political views and moral behaviour in order to re-enter the US.[283] Although McGranery told the press that he had “a pretty good case against Chaplin”, Maland has concluded, on the basis of the FBI files that were released in the 1980s, that the US government had no real evidence to prevent Chaplin’s re-entry. It is likely that he would have gained entry if he had applied for it.[284] However, when Chaplin received a cablegram informing him of the news, he privately decided to cut his ties with the United States:
Whether I re-entered that unhappy country or not was of little consequence to me. I would like to have told them that the sooner I was rid of that hate-beleaguered atmosphere the better, that I was fed up of America’s insults and moral pomposity…[285]
Because all of his property remained in America, Chaplin refrained from saying anything negative about the incident to the press.[286] The scandal attracted vast attention,[287] but Chaplin and his film were warmly received in Europe.[283] In America, the hostility towards him continued, and, although it received some positive reviews, Limelight was subjected to a wide-scale boycott.[288] Reflecting on this, Maland writes that Chaplin’s fall, from an “unprecedented” level of popularity, “may be the most dramatic in the history of stardom in America”.[289]

Why were there two ballots there?
