Repost but I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I read about the rise of the Third Reich too. There’s a terrific book I just read earlier this winter called Winter about these two German brothers. One joins the NSDAP and the other becomes Anti-Nazi. You know that going in but you don’t know which brother goes which way until the middle of the novel.

What makes a man choose humanity over evil in a critical situation? What makes a man choose evil? My grandpa would tell me it’s money but there are certain things in this world that go beyond dollars and cents.

The GOP’s had months to address CHIP, instead chose to waste time on trying to take healthcare away from millions and giving the rich another major cash infusion. We’re not buying that they suddenly give a damn about reauthorizing it.

I believe in so-called political correctness. Not because everyone is a delicate snowflake, but because as Maya Angelou put it, when we know better, we do better. When someone tells you that a term or phrase is more accurate/less hurtful than the one you’re using, you now know better. So why not do better? How does it hurt you to NOT hurt another person? Your refusal to adjust your vocabulary in the name of not being an asshole kind of makes YOU the snowflake.

If they don’t like what the media and Hollywood are doing, maybe it’s up to them to do a better job recruiting. Hollywood and the Media aren’t supposed to write DOD’s script for them. And honestly the administration loses any credibility to complain when they try to keep certain people from serving in the armed forces.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the western Iowa area represented by King fares if Drumpf tries to end NAFTA. A big bunch of their corn goes to Mexico in order to offset the things that Mexico is exporting to the U.S. I suspect they want that wall built and the trade deal upended right up until they see their corn price drop as their major market dries up. Then? Blame Obama? It would be good for Mexican farmers, though, their small farmers were wiped out in part by NAFTA.

They’ll blame Obama because King and Trump will. The only way King leaves that seat is if he dies, gets deemed not racist enough, or is stupid enough to think he can be something more.

he’s focusing on privacy i think. from the article:

… if they voluntarily start giving up information about their employees or access to their employees in ways that contradict our new California laws, they subject themselves to actions by my office,” he said

He added that the state would issue “formal guidance” to employers regarding a law that went into effect on January 1, called the Immigrant Worker Protection Act, which California Gov. Jerry Brown signed in October last year. The law prohibits employers from voluntarily providing ICE with confidential information about their employees and requires them to ask ICE for a warrant prior to any inspection. It also requires employers to post notice of any immigration inspection 72 hours before it takes place, and prohibits them from “reverifying the employment eligibility of a current employee” unless compelled by law.

If you read the article, California passed laws pertaining to employers providing information to ICE. I don’t know why they passed the law, but they did. They are saying that employers who BREAK that law will be prosecuted. Not for “cooperating” but for violating.

This is what living in a state run by Democrats is like.

California sets a new record for lowest unemployment rate

Riding a wave of seasonal hiring and robust employment in multiple sectors, California’s unemployment rate fell to a record low 4.3 percent in December.

The state Employment Development Department said Friday that the jobless rate last month plunged to 4.3 percent, with a robust 52,700 jobs added to California payrolls. The statewide unemployment rate was 4.6 percent in November.

EDD said December’s unemployment rate was the lowest since it began keeping records in 1976.

California has gained a total of nearly 2.8 million jobs since the economic expansion began in February 2010.

The thousand yard stare, shell shock, PTSD, the idea that “war changes you”… we’ve know these risks for more than a century.

Our military and our veterans have become a political football because of certain party that says they respect and honor “the troops” but fuck them over time and again. And by both parties being too fucking scared to revisit the 2001 AUMF that much of the military is still acting under.

Can’t imagine why people don’t want to sign up.

Yeah I’m afraid of violence happening because FNC and Trump himself have convinced them that Mueller is a vindicitive partisan out to get Trump even though Mueller actually has more Republican bonafidies than Trump does. Shutdowns Are Part of the GOP Brand. Of Course They Get the Blame.

government shutdowns are part of the Republican brand.

It is true that in this case, Democrats do have this lever to pull: the GOP’s need for 60 votes. But even that is the consequence of decisions they made to jam through their wildly unpopular tax bill. The larger reality is that Republicans control the White House, the House, and the Senate. Truth be told, because of earlier bad acts, they control the judiciary. They control everything. If you control everything, you are responsible for what happens. This is a basic reality of life. Blaming Democrats is the legislative/partisan equivalent of kicking the dog when something goes wrong in the house. The GOP controls everything. Of course, they’re responsible.

The Democrats want two things: a resolution of the Dreamers issue and a reinstatement of CHIP. These are not new demands for programs. They were things that existed and then President Trump broke them. In the case of CHIP, it just didn’t get done. There was no positive argument for killing CHIP or resistance to the program. It was simply allowed to expire. Once it expired, Republicans started demanding things in exchange to bring it back. Trump definitely ran against DACA. But he broke it and has been all over the map in saying he either wants it back or doesn’t.

there’s a bit more at the link and it’s fairly straightforward and sober imo

Then again, we already see that places like the NYT are damn sure on the ‘both sides same thing’ train already, and we have talking heads like CNN’s Dana Bash who bend over backwards to ensure that everything Trump does is somehow treated as the epitome of presidential, up to and including laying any and all blame at the Dems feet.

Really? Who’s saying that other than FNC and Breitbart? They’re going to spin for Trump either way. Who gives a shit about them. What I want to know is how the Johnny on the street is going to respond to it. And I guarantee you he’s likely not to buy that spin for the simple reason he’ll see that Trump and his party control both houses of Congress and refused to act on DACA, a very popular idea.

Given that cult media can make people believe up is down and left is right, I don’t know that I would be so confident that average people on the street will believe things just because they happen to be real and true. History would suggest that average Americans will in fact buy any spin that FOX cares to put out.

I wonder what it will mean when Mueller makes it clear Trump’s long history of shady activity enabled by very wealthy unscrupulous and dangerous thugs? Will we just put an asterisk next to his presidency or will it actually endanger him…..

Well, the connections are already asterisk-worthy, but the possibility of serious danger is very real. Could be absolutely explosive, or what I like to call the Capone solution — nail the bastard for anything; tax evasion would do; laundering dirty money would do; collusion with a foreign power to spend foreign money in elections would do; or, my favorite, paying off a former lover with campaign funds (we don’t know how the cash got into the account that paid her).

We would not need a Mueller investigation if we did not have a GOP majority Congress that is not about to do anything about obvious and egregious violations of the Emoluments clause, blatant conflicts of interest and obstruction of justice.

Facebook is for news like who your homies are hanging with and where, what they had for lunch/dinner, whose kids and pets are the cutest and which jokes are the stupidest.

I have never looked on it as a source of news about politics or world events.

I’m wondering how much of that is bot-traffic as well, but…yeah. No fucking surprise, GOP line is swallowed without much fucking work. They don’t even have to do work it seems like, the country is conditioned to accept GOP bad faith as the most sincere of good faith, and Dem good faith as the most cynical of bad faith. Certainly. And they may be able to stop Mueller’s team bringing charges. There is a decent chance that the Capone solution will come from Schneiderman or someone else, but at least partly based an information Mueller gathered.

I just got back from buying some bookshelves at Ikea. I figured I at least wanted to be organized when everything goes to hell tonight.

After waiting 20 minutes in the checkout line, I found out that one of the $3 item in my bag was a ‘display’ item so I had to leave everything at the counter and figure out how to get back to the right department and get a new one. Once I found the department, I couldn’t remember which of two very similar items I needed to get. I grabbed one of each, and then tried to figure out the shortcut route back to checkout (there wasn’t one).

I did manage to get out of Ikea only spending $25 more than I’d planned. You have to be so disciplined in that store.

In the Silicon Valley area at least there is a very real housing crisis going on where people who are not software developers are having a very hard time finding any kind of affordable housing in a reasonable commute range.

Teachers, janitors, food service workers, etc. - they all need someplace to live and are increasingly priced out of the Bay Area.

In CA it is $10.50 an hour, Google tells me. Some places have set it higher than that (SF is $13) but …a two bedroom apartment is going to run you a minimum of $2k a month in the South Bay. SF is far, far, faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar worse.

Almost every drug in that list were either painkillers or sedatives, with the exception of the citalopram (AKA Celexa), which is for depression (which is a side effect of some of those other drugs).

Wherever and from whoever Petty got his scripts from, drug interactions like that are not rare and seems to be getting more prevalent amongst performers/musicians that get older, hurt more, and can’t sleep because of the pain (also see MJ and Prince), but still have (or want) to tour.

Republicans are aware that they can use this as a hostage situation indefinitely. It’s a really complex issue with a lot of thorny bits. Pricing is set to a large degree on demand. There’s not a whole lot of buildable land left in the Bay Area, honestly - switching to higher density is probably a big requirement, but that means giving up the single family home out of the “American dream” so it’s a tough sell. Then you need to be able to cope with the traffic load of the increased density which we’re already doing a shitty job with traffic.

And that’s before we get into things like Prop 13 and the impact that’s had on prices and services.

And here is where Minnesota, despite a high average cost of living, has an advantage. The places where the homes are the most expensive are actually out away from the city, on the lake shores. Good housing for working-class people is actually available for a reasonable price and within range of a high density of employers.

mr. klys shifted his schedule for years to avoid rush hour; he only started taking public transit this past year because the parking in downtown was horrid and is sticking with it because it’s more pleasant, even if it takes a little longer. But it does take a job with flexible hours (or a flexible boss) and for far too many people that just isn’t a reality.

The Bay Area has a lot going for it, but it also has its share of drawbacks. Some are starting to wear faster than others.

But it does take a job with flexible hours (or a flexible boss) and for far too many people that just isn’t a reality.

The Bay Area has a lot going for it, but it also has its share of drawbacks. Some are starting to wear faster than others.

For over a decade, my dad used to commute from the southeast (Indiana) suburbs of Chicago to the North Side where he worked. He wound up leaving the house at like 3:30 AM in order to get to work at a reasonable hour, and also to be able to leave early enough in the afternoon to arrive before us kids had to go to bed.

it’s arrived at by averaging a silicon valley entrepreneur’s two million dollar house with a normal person’s $200 k house and coming up with an “average” house costing one million one hundred thousand

voila! a person with a normal income can’t afford to live there!

Median’s still pretty fucking expensive.

Still, you can’t really base ‘poverty’ on the idea that nobody who lives in Colusa County can afford to live in San Francisco.

I’ve been bitten by a new collecting bug, 1939 New York World’s Fair(“The World of Tomorrow”) memorabilia:

GM Futurama Program.

Unused World’s Fair postcard:

Best part is that these items are relatively cheap ($5.00 and $3.50 respectively, including shipping). This is because millions of people went to the Fair, almost all of them brought something back, and collector interest in this subject is still a little soft relative to the volume of available material.

When I bough my house in NE Philly I got it for $59,000. Recently I heard a neighbor sold their house for $ 155,000. And that is for a row house with a small yard in the front and a strip of grass in the back.

A majority of voters oppose shutting down the government over Democratic demands that a budget deal include provisions to shield from deportation illegal immigrants who came to the country as children, according to the latest Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll.

When voters are asked whether they “favor or oppose Democrats voting to shut the government down” if the funding measure does not restore work permits for those protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, 58 percent said they oppose a shutdown.

And here is where Minnesota, despite a high average cost of living, has an advantage. The places where the homes are the most expensive are actually out away from the city, on the lake shores. Good housing for working-class people is actually available for a reasonable price and within range of a high density of employers.

Affordable housing for a blue collar incomes has all but disappeared in St. Paul. It’s become a bit of a metro wide crisis. I know I’ve been looking at unassisted senior housing and the rental rates are brutal. I may need to stay in my 130 year old house.

Like yeah, I sometimes post before I think. A lot of people do that in face to face communication. I take my time thinking more in face to face because I’m more shy and introverted but online I can let out. I just don’t know why you have to school me over a fairly innocent observation. And yeah maybe it was ignorant to think that he would have good memories after what happened with the Feds that day but he still interacted with a lot more American civilians than the average Cuban of his age will have which I just wondered about his perspective now as a 25 year old man.

Speaking face-to-face is way more complicated, especially for those on the spectrum, because you’ve got too much input that has to be analyzed that’s outside the simple words of the conversation. When I’m speaking to others in person, I often feel like my brain is on speed to stay ahead of the conversation in real time.

Typing, there’s only the words, and my fingers run a bit slower than my brain, so I can ensure I’m saying what I mean.
