Those women are from the WWE. It was probably from when he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. The Bella Twins (the two on either end of the photo) clearly look like they don’t want to be there.

The federal government has been advising a beach town on the Jersey Shore on plans to build a pier and start a ferry service that would speed New Yorkers to the doorstep of a resort co-owned by Jared Kushner.

Kushner’s seaside resort sits right next to the proposed pier, which places the federal government in the awkward position of helping steer a project that would benefit President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser. Sadly, Lucha Underground has gone through some major issues, which is sad since I really loved the first season, and the second season, while it had some problems, was still pretty damn good.

ROH I’ve fallen off of, and I just can’t stay up long enough to watch New Japan live.

That said, NXT is still knocking it out of the park on a regular basis lately.

When our classes’ National Honor Society and other class flotsam, like me as class president, went to DC as a student trip the guys all rode a bus to some Army base that was right there in the DC area.

But I cannot remember the name. It was cool in a strange way for the times.

We got our own barracks and had breakfast in the mess hall. What could be better than that for a bunch of Catholic high school boys in 1972? The time of tricky Dicky and Vietnam…and hard rock.

I remember we were signing CSN&Y’s “Ohio” on the bus on the way to DC from Ohio.

The girls in our class stayed at some school dorm or something. That was a three-night stay with uncle Sam, Thursday through Saturday. We were all 1 1/2 months from graduation.

Saw this story earlier today but couldn’t post it. The Trump justice department is suing a nursing home for requiring a nursing assistant to get a flu shot against her “religious beliefs”. She doesn’t even belong to a church. Her body is the temple. This is complete bullcrap that the government is supporting this woman in her suit. Read the article.

Barnell Williams didn’t want a flu shot.

But the nursing home where she worked forced her to get one, she alleges, even after she explained that the vaccine went against her religious beliefs. Her body, Williams allegedly told her employer, is a holy temple, and the Bible prohibits her from putting foreign substances into it.

On Tuesday, the federal government sued Wisconsin’s Ozaukee County, claiming that Williams faced religious discrimination in 2016 when the county-owned nursing home, Lasata Care Center, mandated she get a flu shot to continue working there. Williams, a certified nursing assistant, had worked at the nursing home from December 2015 to June 2017, according to the lawsuit.

A lot of music sellers/consumers already see CDs as a modern version of wax cylinders.

Even though digital is on the upswing, physical is still performing relatively well on a global basis — if not in the U.S. market, where CD sales were down 18.5 percent last year. But things are about to get worse here, if some of the noise coming out of the big-box retailers comes to fruition.

Best Buy has just told music suppliers that it will pull CDs from its stores come July 1. At one point, Best Buy was the most powerful music merchandiser in the U.S., but nowadays it’s a shadow of its former self, with a reduced and shoddy offering of CDs. Sources suggest that the company’s CD business is nowadays only generating about $40 million annually. While it says it’s planning to pull out CDs, Best Buy will continue to carry vinyl for the next two years, keeping a commitment it made to vendors. The vinyl will now be merchandised with the turntables, sources suggest.

If we had a sane President, it would actually be rather cool to have an official commemoration of the 100th in DC. Biplanes and period uniforms, presented (by volunteers) with honor and respect, for an audience of as many military families as can fit. Displays of some of the planes and cannons on the White House Lawn; a military band playing the relevant music; things for the kids to do. An event with the President as merely the host for people who deserve the honor.

Coordinate with exhibits at the Smithsonian for the public. Heck, you could do a SHORT parade down the Mall with the re-enactors in full regalia. But the focus would be the anniversary, not the aggrandizement.

Yeah. I know. That’s one really big IF…

I was about to jokingly ask if they were gonna have ships in the parade, but I remembered when they have the Army Navy game in Philadelphia, and at times when the President was in town to award to Presidential Medal of Freedom on the Fourth of July, the Navy would dock a destroyer or a couple frigates at Penn’s Landing in Center City. They said it was for recruitment and showing the flag, but a relative of mine said they were there on business, to provide anti-aircraft protection. He said it’s easier to have a ship run up from VA than to truck in a SAM battery, and far less ominous.

Sessions is, and has always been, someone who thinks his religion should permit him and others practicing that religion to make religious-based choices, even if those choices harm others or restrict their constitutional rights. Same sex relationships are very common in Pakistan and often not thought of as a sign of homosexuality. In many ways this is a non binary culture - in terms of gender, sexuality, and faith. Religiously observant transgender sex workers who live by exacting a spiritual tax, is a good example of this.
Known as Khwaaja Sarai (or disparagingly and more commonly as ‘Hijra’) they trace their lineage at least as far back as being an important part of the Mughal royal court and administration. The community has an ancient custom of adopting newcomers into guru and disciple relationships. Financial and social rights and responsibilities flow both ways in an interdependent, although sometimes exploitative ‘family’ system.

Let’s say I’ve enlisted in the army and am assigned to a combat zone. The army will have all sorts of shots for me to take, no matter where I’m going. Should I be allowed to refuse them, even though I enlisted voluntarily? After all, even if everyone else in my unit has taken the shots and presumably won’t get sick, if I go down with malaria or dengue fever or whatever in a dangerous situation, I endanger them too.

Or, back to nursing, should a Jain nurse be allowed to refuse to give beef or chicken broth to a patient? Should a Christian Scientist nurse be allowed to refuse to start a blood transfusion on a patient? Should a Muslim be allowed to refuse … ah, hell, it doesn’t matter what a Muslim or a Christian Scientist or a Jain believes, you won’t see this AG fighting for them in court. I’m no fan of the New York Times, but they can be useful in holding people’s feet to the fire.

Back in January, the Times, along with other news outlets, ran the story of a young woman who was coerced into performing a blowjob on her youth pastor back 20 years ago. The youth pastor is now “teaching pastor” at a wannabe megachurch in Memphis. He gave a stiff “apology” on January 7 during a church service; the church later deep-sixed the video.

Here’s an article that came out at the time:

A pastor admitted a past ‘sexual incident’ with a teen, saying he was ‘deeply sorry.’ His congregation gave him a standing ovation.

Also it doesn’t help with denying the truth of it that Cohen paid $130K to shut her up at the same time that Trump was promising he was innocent and would sue all of his other accusers. Abortion is the closest thing modern evangelicals have that’s close to a moral absolute and a cultural touchstone. It’s the one thing they can’t allow themselves to be publicly seen condoning.

I think that if Trump came out and laughed on stage about having had a few kids aborted in his younger days, as part of his personal Vietnam, evangelical support wouldn’t drop more than a percentage point.

We know it’s not really about abortion. You’re right in that they can’t publicly condone it, but as long as the person doing it has the right attitude of subjugation towards women and minorities, it must be excused.

So, last month TOR books gave away the first book of the insanely long Wheel Of Time series. The library system had the rest available as ebooks as well. I read half of the 14 books before I completely began getting tired of the drag, the inanities of the plot and how derivative it was and just read a few bits up to the ending which was enormously underwhelming. There was enough story for, perhaps, three books and the writing made me excruciatingly grateful that I didn’t spend a dime on them.

It’s supposed to be set 3000 years after a war that physically altered the contents of the earth… yeah… OTOH a book to three book series on that war would have probably been far more interesting than the drudgery of this one.

I’m a fast reader & I enjoy most genre fiction. This was worth what I paid for it but only just barely. Grade? C - Worth it if you have nothing better to read & hey, at least it’s not as hideous as Battlefield Earth or anything from Ayn Rand or her acolytes.

But there is a difference between WoT or Shannara and their blatant ripoffs vs something exquisite like Bujold’s Vorkosigan books or John M Ford’s The Dragon Waiting. That last is probably the single finest work of fantasy written since 1980. Bar none.

There is a niche market for fantasy series that go on and on forever. Maybe when I was younger I could have justified wasting my time reading them, or maybe my tastes have changed in the intervening half-century, but now I can’t stand them. OTOH I have enjoyed watching Game of Thrones on the telly, but reading the books is a real slog for me. Martin has embellished his story with so much intricate detail — costumes, genealogies, cuisine, back stories, customs — that the details obscure the plot. Some fans want that kind of world-creation, so they can feel like they are part of the fictional universe. Me, I want the story to progress, and Martin is already well known as a writer who takes 100,000 words to get two important characters to finally meet each other to move the plot along.

Right now, I’m trying out a thing: reading the first Altered Carbon novel in between watching the episodes in the series.

My dad was an ultra-conservative, family values, law & order guy, who used to believe that. But he was also an anesthesiologist, who’d taken call 2 or 3 days a week for 40 years. I got him onboard for marijuana legalization with just one question:

“In all your years in emergency rooms, how many marijuana overdoses have you seen, compared to how many cases of alcohol poisoning?”

I didn’t even have to persuade him about making/keeping abortion legal — he knew very well how many women had been brought into his ER, on their way to either the OR or the morgue, for “hemorrhage” or “infection”.

I decided to look at the actual text of the law Florida just passed:

(13) A person younger than 21 years of age may not purchase a firearm. The sale or transfer of a firearm to a person younger than 21 years of age may not be made or facilitated by a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer.

So 18 year olds will still be legally able to be gifted guns (even handguns) via private party transfers. Also, there’s still no requirement or enforcement mechanism for non-licensed (ie private party) sellers (even at a gun show) to ask for proof of age or identification when selling a firearm. The law only applies to underage buyers and licensed sellers.

A loophole wide enough to drive a convoy of hearses through.

grounded at Gatwick.
The premature lines in his face are a map of a hostile country,
The redness in his eyes a reminder that hollyberries are poison.
He goes inside to put on a look acceptable for Christmas Court;
As he slams the door it rattles like strafing jets.

Outside the Station proper, in the snow,
On a through track that’s used for milk and mail,
A wheezing saddle-tanker stops for breath;
A way-freight mixed, eight freight cars and caboose,
Two great ugly men on the back platform, talking with a third on
the ballast.
One, the conductor, parcels out the last of the coffee;
They drink. A joke about grails. They laugh.
When it’s gone, the trainman pretends to kick the big hobo off,
But the farewell hug spoils the act.
Now two men stand on the dirty snow,
The conductor waves a lantern and the train grinds on.
The ugly men start walking, the new arrival behind,
Singing “Wenceslas” off-key till the other says stop.
There are two horses waiting for them. Rather plain horses,
Considering. The men mount up.
By the roundhouse they pause,
And look at the locos, the water, the sand, and the coal,
The look for a long time at the turntable,
Until the one who is King says “It all seemed so simple, once,”
And the best knight in the world says “It is. We make it hard.”
They ride on, toward Camelot by the service road.

The sun is winter-low. Kay’s caravan is rolling.
He may not run a railroad, but he runs a tight ship;
By the time they unload in the Camelot courtyard,
The wassail will be hot and the goose will be crackling,
Banners snapping from their towers, fir logs on the fire, drawbridge
down,
And all that sackbut and psaltery stuff.
Blanchefleur is taking the children caroling tonight,
Percivale will lose to Merlin at chess,
The young knights will dally and the damsels dally back,
The old knights will play poker at a smaller Table Round.
And at the great glass station, motion goes on,
The extras, the milk trains, the varnish, the limiteds,
The _Pindar of Wakefield_, the _Lady of the Lake_,
The _Broceliande Local_, the _Fast Flying Briton_,
The nerves of the kingdom, the lines of exchange,
Running to a schedule as the world ought,
Ticking like a hot-fired hand-stoked heart,
The metal expression of the breaking of boundaries,
The boilers that turn raw fire into power,
The driving rods that put the power to use,
The turning wheels that make all places equal,
The knowledge that the train may stop but the line goes on;
The train may stop
But the line goes on.

Statistically speaking* 80% of the kids in my high school of 1200 students in the 1970s had smoked pot at least once. Heroin addiction was not a thing.

Statistically speaking, probably 95% of heroin addicts drank beer or some other form of booze before they ever tried marijuana, much less hard drugs. Close to 100% drank milk at one time or another. And a flat 100% drank water. Christ, those gateway drugs are everywhere.

I used to be very convinced that marijuana was a gateway drug….just say no, Nancy!

Then my best friend ended up with rheumatoid arthritis and pot deadened the pain. No opioids. I have seen the light.

It should be legal everywhere.
