Trump Starts the Week With a Torrent of Fear-Mongering and Gaslighting

The malevolent toad squatting in the White House awoke bright and early today and uncorked the following series of garbled, dishonest and racist tweets; even for him this is quite a torrent of idiocy and bad craziness.

I won’t even bother pointing out the numerous lies in this appalling, embarrassing stream of unconsciousness, because why bother? By now, everyone knows Trump is living in his own universe, and most of the conservative movement is there with him.

Ohhhkay, then. Ladies and gentlemen, the president of the United States.

And then, there’s this.

Trump is the most obvious actor in the current idiocracy.

But he is not alone.

Often we complain about Fox News, but they are not even the majority of the problem, in regards to fear-mongering and gaslighting.

Do any of you ever hear the USA Radio Network news? It’s often the “news” that is played on AM radio stations, or even some of the bigger podcast-collector streams. It’s often a whitewashing of the truth. For those who don’t know, that “news” service is owned by the despicable Patrick Brown: en.wikipedia.org.)

Example - this noon that “news” is running a story about Trump’s approval rising to 50%. (It’s a Rasmussen poll.) Same “news” also runs a story about the stock market tanking today, blaming it on China putting tariffs on various American goods, without at all mentioning that China is only doing this in reaction to Trump putting on tariffs first. Same “news” also runs a short audio outtake of Trump blaming Demoncrats for DACA not being pushed forward, completely without context.

This is what America hears when they listen to radio or streams.

The blow-up last week over Sinclair’s dictate to local news folk regarding calling other news outlets fake is just the latest in a very long list of Sinclair badness.

Trump is the result, not the cause, of this state of America.

well if those ICE agents weren’t so busy deporting people that have been living, working and serving in our military, maybe they could find a way to “shut down” these caravans of border illegals from entering the country…

what I need is for the elections in 2018 to happen and then the trials to begin on these traitors. Then we can put quid pro quo to Vlad and his minions as well.

Do they not realize that they aren’t going to bring in businesses from bigger states? California supposedly has a terrible tax structure, yet we’re the 6th largest economy in the world. They can’t compete with us. Or with New York. Or even with Texas and Florida. Mostly because those are places that have cities where people want to live.

Kentucky isn’t going to attract businesses unless they have an educated workforce.

Amazon might build a distribution center, which is manual labor intensive (and requires a handful of educated managers to oversee the team there), but you’re not going to get Amazon to build HQ2 there no matter how much money you throw at them if they can’t get enough qualified technologists.

Screw the schools and you screw your economy.

Just ask Oklahoma and every other state that cuts their education budgets while claiming teachers are overpaid pansies (oh, and while you’re underpaid, here’s a gun because you need to now function as SWAT too).

Okay. The Jews have disappointed me. I mean, is there a St. Mauritius? No? A Belize? I don’t know. We gotta have — there’s gotta be something else going on here! How about an Asian ethnic holiday? Is there one? You know, a Saint Jin Tao Wow? Chinese New Year? All right, we can do that … I mean, what is with all of these ethnic holidays? I mean how about an American Day? How about were all the same kind of day?”

That’s true, too. An issue is that the model used to attract Amazon to build a distribution center in Lexington and Toyota a plant in Georgetown was to grant massive tax incentives. They want moderately-well educated workers, but more important that they be young and have some dexterity.

There was some talk about that a few years ago, where the GOP tried to extend whiteness to include Mexicans. Bush’s overtures were part of that. The problem is, Latinos refused to give up their culture - language, heritage, religion, etc. - to become white.

Getting back to the topic of how science, in particular genetics/genomics, is a nexus of conflict in the ideological war of us-vs-them:

A recent preprint about a new technique to determine archaic admixture, without having access to preserved ancient skeletons, shows how the noxious are drawn to these sort of things.

First, the research:

Recovering signals of ghost archaic admixture in the genomes of present-day Africans

Analyses of Neanderthal and Denisovan genomes have characterized multiple interbreeding events between archaic and modern human populations. While several studies have suggested the presence of deeply diverged lineages in present-day African populations, we lack methods to precisely characterize these introgression events without access to reference archaic genomes. We present a novel reference-free method that combines diverse population genetic summary statistics to identify segments of archaic ancestry in present-day individuals. Using this method, we find that ~7.97±0.6% of the genetic ancestry from the West African Yoruba population traces its origin to an unidentified, archaic population (FDR ≤20%). We find several loci that harbor archaic ancestry at elevated frequencies and that the archaic ancestry in the Yoruba is reduced near selectively constrained regions of the genome suggesting that archaic admixture has had a systematic impact on the fitness of modern human populations both within and outside of Africa.

The full PDF of the preprint is here.

It’s a fascinating aspect of human evolution that has only come to light in the era of genomics and affordable methods of doing full genome sequencing.

As not unexpected, there are plenty of those who want to misuse these kind of discoveries to push their own bigotry. On that link to the bioRXiv there is a section showing tweets that reference the post, and sure enough we find these:

That twitter profile is run by what looks to be a strong Hindu-national who constantly tweets anti-Muslim and occasional anti-Christian stuff. Also his claim about “Home-Erectus” is false - the preprint does not state this, and the tweeter’s formulation of “Homo-Erectus” is also non-taxonomic.

Going down into the next level of Twitter Hell, we find this person:

That twitter account is full of the usual ugly with which we often encounter. And btw, his claim about “non human” is not what the preprint says. “Human” is a broad category that now includes the Neanderthals, Denisovans, and also whatever archaic population is in the genomes studied. And his spelling of “Non-Sapian” is also in error. The correct spelling is “sapiens”, lower case and with an e.

Bigots tend to be ignorant.

And every bigot’s favorite smart man (in their eyes), Steve Sailer, chimes in:

Is 8% of West African Yoruban DNA from a “Ghost Archaic” Species?

… where one can find all sorts of stupid and ugly manifesting itself in the comments.

Why do so many people - and it is not just Americans or “white” folk, which is why the first tweet I linked is from an Indian - have such an attraction to misusing this science?

Well, they do. Bigots are bigots because that is what they are. I’m sure we could get some psychologists who work in child development to come up with various reasons, but in the end the bigots are bigots.

My contention is that as a society we have to get to the point where we accept that humanity is a diverse population, the diversity itself a key reason why as a species we have been so successful in outliving all our close relatives, and have taken over the planet.

This gets me back to the kerfuffle over David Reich’s letters in the NYT. Reich takes on the likes of Sailer and Charles Murray in the book, I am told as I have not read it. Reich’s point is that we humans really do differ in our DNA, by ancestral groups, and we ought not to try and run from that discovery.

It becomes very hard to do so (to not run from this field of discovery), when clearly so many people (such as those who I linked above) really want to misuse the information.

The problem is that Latino/Hispanic is an ethnicity rather than a race (both social constructs, yes) that allows more people in. So Cameron Diaz, George Lopez, and David Ortiz all get to be Latino but only Cameron gets to be white.

Wait… I thought if you put more money in the economy that means more people would spend money, meaning sellers could raise prices due to higher demand, which is, in effect… inflation.

Also, I didn’t realize that 2009 was basically a deflationary year, but apparently it was. Oh, and inflation seems to be ticking up the last couple of years.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Peter Navarro is one of Trump’s leading economic advisers. And there’s no economic theory in which what he said makes any sense.

Inflation ticking up - yep. It’s been running too low for a decade. People hate inflation when they buy stuff, but they love it when they look at their mortgage payments as a percentage of their income.

Inflation is discriminatory.

It benefits those who are wealthy enough to own assets whose value will be part of the inflator.

However, the poor, i.e., those without such assets, find themselves with even less.

Kind of amazing, really.

Over time, inflation reduces the real value of your debt, as well as your payments on that debt. Thus, moderate inflation has some benefits, assuming it’s real, wage-and-price inflation.

That’s good for debtors. Not so good for creditors. So, if your income or wealth depend on people owing you money, inflation negatively impacts your real income or wealth.

A brilliant self-own by conservatives.

Paul Joseph Watson (henchman of the Stupidest Man on the Internet) took that Borg-like Sinclair clip from Deadspin and put it on Gateway Pundit.

He pointed out the eerie similarity of the broadcast, then claimed it was a leftist broadcast company funded by the International JOOOOOOOO George Soros.

Sinclair stations around the country along with conservative blogs and radio stations are now being attacked by conservatives for pushing a “leftist agenda.”

Sadly, that shows how much reach Mr. Hoft has. Hilariously, it shows that no bubble, no bubble, you’re the bubble.

Wingnuts So Mad George Soros Made Sinclair Spread Conservative Propaganda (goes to Wonkette), more at the link:

After Deadspin published the video, Infowars troll Paul Joseph Watson (the one who is always pathetically trying to claim that being conservative is “punk rock” now) published on his own Twitter feed with literally zero contextual information.

He was swiftly credited with creating the video himself by Gateway Pundit — home of Stupidest Man On The Internet, Jim Hoft.

FRANKFORT—House and Senate Republicans unveiled the most significant changes to Kentucky’s tax code in more than a decade Monday in attempts to provide funding in a tight budget year.

The full bill is not yet available to the public.
House Speaker Pro Tempore David Osborne and House Majority Leader Jonathan Shell declined to speak to the Herald-Leader.

“The whole way this was done is unconscionable,” said Rep. Jim Wayne, D-Louisville. “It’s heavy handed, it’s done by an elite and it’s done behind closed doors without any opportunity for the public to voice opinions or to vet these ideas.”

The Senate passed the budget and tax bill after hours of discussion on Monday afternoon. The tax bill passed without the support of seven Republicans, while only two Republicans voted against the budget.

Third Woman Sues to Void Secrecy Pact Linked to Donald Trump (Bloomberg Business Week), more at the link:

A former employee of President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign team is seeking to nullify a non-disclosure agreement, saying it potentially put her on the hook to pay $1.5 million because she sued the organization for discrimination and harassment.

Jessica Denson, a Los Angeles-based actress, is the third woman who has sought to void a secrecy agreement involving Trump; the adult film star Stormy Daniels sued to block a pact that she alleges forced her to keep quiet about a sexual encounter with Trump, and former Playboy model, Karen McDougal, sued the parent company of the National Enquirer to void a deal that she says forced her to stay silent about an affair she had with him.

Denson says she joined Trump’s campaign in August 2016 and oversaw phone banks and Hispanic outreach for the campaign. She sued in November seeking $25 million in damages, claiming her superiors on the campaign defamed her, harassed her and discriminated against her. The Trump campaign responded by attempting to move the lawsuit to arbitration, where it submitted a claim for $1.5 million saying Denson breached the confidentiality and non-disparagement obligations of the non-disclosure agreement.

President Trump Announces Plans to Build Monument Commemorating the War on Christmas (goes to the Secular Coalition for America), more:

Today, the Trump Administration unveiled plans to construct a monument hailing the end of the War on Christmas. The new memorial will make good on President Trump’s promise to bring about a peaceful resolution to the nearly 20-year contrived conflict.

“President Trump is proud to declare victory in the War on Christmas,” said a White House spokesman, who repeatedly asked that their name not be used. “No longer will the celebration of Christmas be restricted to private homes, multiple 24/7 radio stations, non-stop television specials, Christmas themed commercials interrupting those television specials, decorations in every major retail outlet, proclamations from elected officials, and a federal holiday. Now that the War on Christmas is over, this cherished religious holiday can finally get the recognition it deserves. The President believes his victory in the War on Christmas will be among the greatest achievements of his presidency.”

At the consecration ceremony for the new monument, President Trump is expected to issue an official proclamation establishing that “Christmas” will now refer to the entire period of time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

Hey, do y’all remember when Fox News Sunday had their “Obama watch” showing how long it had been since Obama promised them an interview?

Chris Wallace must have some important questions for Barack Obama. After all, the “Fox News Sunday” host has had 769 days to dream them up.

Obama to Appear on ‘Fox News Sunday’.

Five weeks after Mr. Wallace introduced “Obama Watch,” a weekly countdown clock marking the number of days since he said Mr. Obama had committed to an interview, the Fox News Channel announced Thursday that the Democratic presidential candidate would appear on its Sunday morning public affairs show this weekend.

Well, I am thinking all the networks other than Fox should do the same sort of thing. When was the last time Trump gave a nonFOX television interview? Was it the Lester Holt interview almost a year ago? Why are the networks letting him get away with this?

Also when was the last time he gave a solo press conference?

Hell, Obama let Bill fuckin O’Reilly interview him during super bowl. TWICE!

Getting back to DNA and the discomfort modern science has in its disruptive quality, Nature ran an article last week about this and also a short editorial.

First the editorial:

On the use and abuse of ancient DNA

History might, as historian Arnold Toynbee allegedly said, be one damned thing after another, but historians and archaeologists spend a lot of their time trying to put those things into the right order. Assistance from science over the decades has been transformative, but not without difficulty: it took years for some archaeologists to be won over by radiocarbon dating.

Now, historians and archaeologists are grappling with a new scientific technique. As we discuss in a News Feature, the genetic study of ancient DNA is exploding, and the findings are posing several problems. One is a need for geneticists, archaeologists, historians and anthropologists to understand exactly how their skills and insights complement each other’s. It is clear, for example, that although genetics has useful things to say about the sweep of population history, the more conventional disciplines provide essential context.

[…]

And the article:

Divided by DNA: The uneasy relationship between archaeology and ancient genomics

Genomics has been disruptive to archeology but I think the biggest effect has been in that genomics is deepening the divide between cultural anthropologists and physical anthropologists.

This sort of echoes their recent conflict on whether anthropology ought to be part of a science body (like biology or physics) or not (e.g., “liberal arts”, like historians.)

Anyway, the churn will continue and given America’s current social experiment in idiocracy I’m not sure a great deal will be integrated into the larger public, from these ivory-tower discussions.

Which is true, I suppose, of all fields that require large technical expertise.

The problem of science writing was highlighted in a recent NYT article: At 12, His Science Video Went Viral. At 14, He Fears He Was Too Rude.

Marco Zozaya in March near his home in Mexico. He aspires to be a science communicator like Neil deGrasse Tyson, but faces the conundrum of internet audiences and algorithms that may prefer drama over scientific information.

We’ve often lamented here how science discoveries get misconstrued.

This problem is going to get worse as time goes on because (assuming Trump is not successful is terminating modernity) in each field of expertise the amount of discoveries increases as long as we have the ability to archive what has been previously discovered.

This means someone new to a field has a higher mountain to climb, when they start at the basics and want to know what is the cutting edge in the field.

The website Hogg Watch (hoggwatch.com) was registered on March 24 and is connected to naturalnews.com, which is run by Mike Adams. According to domain search service WHOIS, a site called Hogg Watch was registered on March 24. The site shares the Disqus shortname (a kind of ID for using the Disqus service) “naturalnews” with naturalnews.com, according to analytic tool Trendolizer. Gizmodo noted that Mike Adams is “the self-declared ‘Health Ranger’ behind questionably reliable pseudoscience site Natural News,” a site that has pushed fake news and conspiracy theories.

Adams was recently booted from YouTube. Gizmodo noted that Adams’ YouTube channel had been banned “for violating YouTube’s Community Guidelines.” Adams had pushed claims that mass shootings were often false flags, including that there was going to be a “massive false flag attack planned to stop Trump” in 2016. Adams has blamed the Southern Poverty Law Center for the YouTube ban and claimed it was in part due to him interviewing someone who denied the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School was real.

I wonder if local news viewership has been ideologically sorted?

I wonder too… I suspect it has to some extent, but local TV viewership is probably driven more by other programming than any local news content.

Sinclair runs mostly junk or old reruns, or did in the past, but as it has grown has offered more content.

I see people are reacting to Fox News co-president coming out in support of Ingraham, said co-president blathering on about censorship.

But my question to those who complain about Fox News is this: Do you watch the regular, OTA Fox TV network? How about the Fox Sports channels?

Because the money goes to all the same people.

So if some aspirin company pulls their ads from Laura’s show, but still pays Fox the same amount of money and their adverts show up on some other Fox show, does it really make a difference?

Murdoch doesn’t care what his viewers believe anymore than what his on-air personalities do. He just cares about taking in money.

Eh, yes and no. If the local baseball/basketball/hockey team plays on a Fox Sports channel, chances are part of that money goes to the team, at least indirectly (Fox Sports agreed to pay some amount of money to the team to broadcast their games, based in part on expected ratings, which in turn drive the ad rates they can charge). Same with Fox OTA, not every show on Fox broadcast is produced by Fox’s production company - so that money is going, again, in directly, at least in part to the production company and the people who worked on the show. Fox News Channel, however, is all in house, much more of that ad money goes to FNC and its employees (like Ingraham).

And, I don’t know the exact details of Fox’s corporate structure, but I’m guessing there’s multiple subsidiaries within the empire so if one subsidiary under performs the others, perhaps that will spur some change in the under performing business.

re: #139 KGxvi

But my point is, Fox News will never “underperform” because it was already created to cater to a particular demographic.

And it is not that demographic who pressured Bayer et. al. to drop their ads from Ingraham’s show.

Those advertisers who are dropping their ads are doing nothing more than theatre.

Fox will just move advertisers from other time slots to Ingraham’s.

Then the holes left for adverts on those other shows will get filled by those very same companies who left Ingraham’s show.

Beware of theatre as a substitute for real change.

The Fox co-president’s letter is evidence that the message that the boycotters are wanting really did not in the end get through.

Because if it did, said co-president wouldn’t have turned around and used it as a marketing tool.

We’ve been down this road before, with Fox News (and its spinoffs like the the Fox Business channel.)

People have tried boycotts before. This or that company pulls ads for a while.

And what happens?

Fox goes even more over the edge, which is why they are so in the tank for helping Trump turn the US into a fascist state.

Death by a thousand cuts. Trump cares nothing about The People and their healthcare needs. All he cares about is destroying anything associated with Obama. He is a sick, cruel, ignorant bully.

It’s the entire Republican party that falls in this category, except some aren’t ignorant — just evil

Well, as we saw with O’Rielly, it ended with his show being gone. Same could happen to Ingraham after her surprise one week vacation (same thing that O’Rielly did). The next step in this process is getting companies to wait to buy ad time until we see what replaces the bad. If the bad is replaced by equally bad, or worse, then you’re right it does nothing.

If O’Reilly kept bringing in ad money while that was happening, they would have kept him on air with some mealymouthed line about due process and second chances and personal matters. But the advertisers bailed on his show. Like Harvey Weinstein, it was no longer just a matter of his sexual harassment exploits being part of the expected costs, it was actively costing the company money.

Put another way, did Fox’s executive use the dismissal of O’Reilly as a marketing tool? No, not really. Because in the case of O’Reilly, Bill really did cost Fox some money.

Fox apparently thinks it can now make money from the whole Ingraham thing.

Isn’t Fox News the tool that is damaging, not some of their other networks?

In other words…eye on the target. IMO.

If Fox sticks to standard comic and dramatic programming and sports what is the issue if they make money that way? That isn’t what the students are out to achieve.

If Fox is forced to make a change in Fox News for the better, all the better. That would make the boycotts effective.

I just can’t believe that anymore. The GOP’s manic hold on every last shred of power they continue to possess makes any thought that they will ever again be a party of principle and law ridiculous. Trump is just the first recipient of this total abdication, but you can be sure that any Republican holding the office going forward will receive the same protection from their loyal cronies in the legislature.

I was thinking more in the contemporary or future sense. Reagan and Bush were smart enough not to start a war with a private entity, which is pretty much what Trump is doing. And the GOP is going to go along with it because they want to knock Bezos (and, through him, WAPO) down a peg.

Fox is trying to save face. They would never admit to anything hurting them.

If anything goes on it will be behind the scenes and on the downlow. Same way they booted O’Reilly. They want to keep up appearances of not worrying, we got this. It will hold their viewers.

You are making some judgement based on a few days. Let it play out a bit more for a real study.

What trump is too stupid to understand is that FedEx and UPS also handle Amazon shipments. Plus, FedEx and UPS also use the USPS to deliver packages to the more sparsely parts of the Country where the USPS is required to serve but is unprofitable for FedEx and UPS to deliver just a package or two.

Many times I’ve had the USPS deliver packages which began their journey via FedEx or UPS. The strangest part is that FedEx and UPS do have shipping offices here.

When I order something from Amazon, it comes directly via the USPS (no FedEx or UPS as they won’t deliver here). Our tiny village post office is also profitable for the USPS (as my wife and the gun shop owner here demonstrated when the USPS tried to shut it down).

Trump’s a man who bought into the wingnut talking points about how a president enjoys total power to do whatever he chooses and thus when something doesn’t happen then it’s due to his choice rather than constraints upon the office. So when he got into office and discovered that he couldn’t order anything he wanted to happen, he decided the problem was simply one that Congress could “fix.” After years of accusing the DNC of various acts against the Constitution, we’re seeing proof positive that wingnuts haven’t the first fucking clue what the document actually says.

Of course he is. This isn’t about failing retail businesses, it’s not about The Talking Yam’s concern about Americans’ economic well-being, and it’s not about the USPS. This is about The Talking Yam’s jealousy in regard to Bezos being wealthier than he is. Also the President can’t be sued personally for official acts and the Article 1 Section prohibition against Bills of Attainder only pertains to actual laws passed by Congress. Trump can do something so egregious, damaging and unfair that forces Bezos / Amazon to sue the government, and Trump is handing him lots of ammo to use in Court, but as long as Trump argues he’s acting as President his personal liability is basically nil.

All of which violate laws that I have to listen to every year at my government contractor job. The amount of money Bezos could win for bath faith attacks like that would allow him to open Amazon 2 as a competitor to Amazon.

That’s the way it worked two years ago, and for most of the country’s history. Now nothing works that way any more.

Trump is a dictator in everything but name now, and if he wants to personally destroy someone or some company there’s no one to stop him. And I mean No One.

Impeachment should be the only topic anyone is talking about in DC and the media now, but it isn’t. Because of that Trump can do anything he damn well pleases.

That’s a head scratcher at best.

What I am saying is that it is not unusual for heads of large corporations to be targets of politicians.

A variety of important information about breast cancer and breast cancer screenings has gone missing from the Department of Health and Human Services women’s health website. The Sunlight Foundation tracks changes to government sites and they published a report on the now-vanished information.

The “Breast Cancer” website and related pages were removed from within the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office on Women’s Health (OWH) website. While content about mammogram breast cancer screening remains, informational pages and factsheets about the disease, including symptoms, treatment, risk factors, and public no- or low-cost cancer screening programs, have been entirely removed and are no longer found elsewhere on the OWH site. Among the material removed is information about provisions of the Affordable Care Act that require coverage of no-cost breast cancer screenings for certain women, as well as links to a free cancer screening program administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The office did not proactively announce or explain the removals.

You sure you are not getting the political arm of the Kochs mixed up with the business of Amazon? Because they are not the same.

Sure the Democrats/liberals target the Kochs politics and it has caused many people to boycott their products. But I don’t know of an example a Democratic politician, with the power of an office, go after another political enemy’s business.

How many times has Obama threatened to pull contracts or to have them investigated for cause?

Obama never did it himself, that I can remember, of targeting a specific person.

But you will find other elected officials who make this or that corporate personality a target for their attention.

Trump’s DOJ to impose an ‘unprecedented’ quota on federal immigration judges: report (Raw Story)

There’s roughly 260 work days in 2018. We’re already 66 days into that and now Jefferson Beauregard is imposing this quota. Assuming 700 divided by the remaining 195 work days, these judges would each have to clear 4 cases a day to meet their quota before year’s end. Don’t be surprised if we start hearing more stories about summary judgments.

You can do that is PS if you want. Or get a 1.2 lens! Yikes $ But this is a 4.0 135 mm tilt shift Canon lens rental. I went long for a macro 4k video job this week, the effect actually favors wider focal lengths. What gets me is the “L” lens optics that make the blur so creamy. All I did in PS was keep it high key and reduce the vibrance/saturation. No crop at all. I just got the thing to get what some call specific perspective.

Interesting challenge. For me, I’d have to say miss because it’s a bit too pictorialist for my tastes. Compare Group F/64 (especially the Adams photo of an apple tree at the top of the article) for something a bit closer to what I’d like to see done.

Well done though and a bigger key is if it fits what you feel you were trying to do. Aesthetics is always an interesting mess :)

They don’t care. The Republicans will tell them that teachers are evil because they work for the government and hence sympathize with the liberals, dark-skinned, and Muslims. It makes no sense, but at this point the white people of those states couldn’t follow logic if they saw it.

I’m definitely in that school of thought, even though I have had only a handful of photos of what I’d consider to be technically perfect. I find framing the shot to be easy. It’s the timing to get the right light and the image just right with the focus and everything. That’s where I get hung up… and sometimes, it’s just because I’m on vacation and can’t spend hours trying to get the shot - wrong time of day, wrong light, too many people in shot, not enough people in shot, etc.
