Of course, Trump and his GOP enablers will completely ignore any legitimate financial issues caused by Congress mandating that the USPS fully fund 75 years of retirement costs over a decade not awfully long ago (and keep it funded for a rolling 75 years out, taking money away from their operating budget) in a quite-obvious ploy to weaken it, to the benefit of private-sector shippers like UPS and FedEx.

Bring it……there are few things in the world as closely looked at as the USPS.
Jeff Bezos could pay every cable company in the country to take Fox News off their listings. He could maybe buy Fox with his pocket change.
It’s popular in society, long has, to complain about the Post Office.
This is exactly why Trump is picking on them.
He’s exploiting built-in mythologies to carry on his intimidation tactics.
FWIW, I went to the local post office the other day to mail my taxes. No line, no wait, just pay the postage and go. Now I have tracking numbers, should I want to follow the envelopes.
It’s easy, not really that expensive, and convenient.
But that’s not the story Trump is using. He’s railing about the USPS because people have complained about it for a century.
And he does this to justify two things: 1) his targeting of Amazon, owners of WaPo, and 2) so his know-nothing base believe that Trump is actually doing something.

I had to have a hole repaired in my roof last week. For the last couple of weeks here in Middle GA, we’ve had some high winds. I wasn’t really worried about it——until it rained last week, I stepped out of my bedroom into the hallway and saw water on the tiles. I had been mopping earlier that evening, but I know I didn’t leave that much water on the floor. I mopped the water up, thinking that maybe Penelope had spilled some water from pushing her bowl from one room to another. Nope. That wasn’t it. A few days later, it rained again and I see more water in the same spot. I knew then there was something wrong with my roof, and I couldn’t believe it because it’s a new roof! Guy came out and discovered that a part of a pine tree had broken off and knocked a pizza pan size hole in the roof. I’ve had about seven trees removed from the property so far, and now I’m thinking I need to remove a few more.

“Drought-pocalypse in west Texas. A dust storm rolls over Odessa, Texas last week.”
Don’t dare call it a haboob. I remember some Arizona citizens freaking out when a weather guy used that term to refer to a dust storm there a few years ago. “We don’t want nothing to do with them Mooslims, call it by it’s American name——dust storm” seemed to be the preferred response at the time.

The study of ancient astronomy is now a growing scientific discipline, and it turns out our ancient ancestors were no dummies. They could do stuff like predict solar eclipses (useful to control the masses with portents of doom), line up buildings on the cardinal points, and so on. All without the help of mysterious aliens who came and then disappeared forever.
But the idea was a great concept for Stargate, the movie.

We’re swinging from around 85F this afternoon (outside cleaning out an old shed of my father’s. Probably hadn’t been opened in 7 or 8 years. Eek.) to the 40s during the day on Monday, low in the 20s. All of the trees and shrubs around here are going to be unhappy. They are supposed to spray the field right in front of my house on Monday. I hope they get it done and don’t get a lot of wind drift. We had the field in hay, and didn’t spray. I’m going to miss the grass and the birds, dragonflies and bats. Sigh.
So, here’s how package delivery works at my university. Every single time. I teach for 2 -4 hours, go home, take off my shoes, get ready to relax, and a text comes to inform me my package has arrived at the absolute farthest pickup point on campus. It’s a good 15 minute walk.
And today it’s raining.
OTOH it’s computer stuff, so I will {grumble grumble} put my boots back on and trudge through the rain to fetch my goodies.
I can almost guarantee another text will arrive once I return home to tell me another parcel has arrived at a different pickup location. That’s happened, too.
Anyway, BBIAB.

An evolution of the Shaggy God Story
A shaggy God story is a minor science fiction genre characterized by an attempt to explain Biblical concepts with science fiction tropes. The term was coined by writer and critic Brian W. Aldiss in a pseudonymous column in the October 1965 issue of New Worlds.
“The shaggy god story is the bane of magazine editors, who get approximately one story a week set in a garden of Eden spelt Ee-Duhn.”

Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer has signed legislation that will increase the penalties for making hoax emergency calls when they lead to the injuries or deaths of others.

This “reached for his waistband” claim has appeared in a lot of police shootings recently. It is not a reason to shoot, the killers know perfectly well that men in particular will reflexively try to pull their pants up when they are taken by surprise. I saw this many times when I was a police officer, and never shot anyone. It is an excuse, a power-tripping fad among killer cops. It is akin to the spate of shootings of harmless little dogs we saw a while back, a fad that continues in many brutality-oriented cop shops. It is an expression of brutal, un-mitigated power. I would like to see a national, indeed, global, boycott of communities that allow this barbarism. Hit these savages and their backward-ass fascist employers where it hurts, in their profits.

In this case, the officer was working on the knowledge that he had: A murder had been committed and the person swatted was holding two people in a kidnapping.
With the calls saying the guy had murdered someone (even though they were later shown false), that sort of indicates to me that such a person (a murderer) would kill again.
The article also says that both the police and the citizens’ review board will go over the incident to see if he followed police protocols and if those protocols are sufficient.
The asshole who made the hoax calls has been arrested and charged with manslaughter (essentially using the police as a murder weapon).
More arrests on such swatting incidents and perhaps that sort of thing will decline.
The city of Mesa Arizona is self insured. They are going to take a huge financial hit over the barbaric police murder of Daniel Shaver. I don’t know about Wichita’s liability arrangements but there will no doubt be a big payout over the swatting murder and they, too, should take the hit themselves.
One thing that should be on the agenda for the next Democratic Congress: A requirement that government entities self insure against misconduct by their police officers and other employees. No more splitting the cost of fascism with other, more enlightened communities. Reforms in use of force standards should be on the agenda in every state. In truth, these reforms would be a rollback of changes that were only recently adopted as part of the militarization of police and that essentially legalize murder and mayhem by police.

They have already decided not to charge him. It is significant that the officers who were closer and had a better view did not shoot. My point is that reaching toward a waistband is not an adequate justification, especially when your own weapon is drawn and aimed. When I was a deputy the standard was to draw at an alarming move and shoot if, and only if, a weapon was displayed. The protocols do need some revision, or, more accurately, a reversal of recent revisions that allow this hair trigger mentality.
re: #218 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel
That was on our village board agenda some months ago (self-insurance). We are no longer self-insured; we are now part of a pool of municipalities in the state which insures municipalities in lawsuits. (There was some complaint about premiums in town, but those were quashed with “one payout and we’re bankrupt.”)
We don’t have police here, though we are considering reviving the post of village marshal (an unarmed position).

If “already” is defined as “four months after the shooting.”
The man who made the hoax call was arrested the day after the shooting.
theguardian.com
The Guardian writes in their article from December 30 that he came to the door and was told to put his hands in the air, where he then allegedly reached for his waist and the police officer shot him.
I admit I am having difficulty with this, because police officers aren’t robots who all behave exactly the same way faced with the same situation (at least until we get RoboCop). Two officers didn’t shoot, one did. All three were facing a murder/hostage situation.
I am glad they swiftly arrested the person who used the police as a murder weapon.

This could be resolved with a population based statutory limit on payouts and, of course, by limiting the self insurance requirement to misconduct.

I definitely oppose limits on tort cases.
Let’s say for the sake of argument you put a population-based limit on torts. I’ll just pick a figure out of the air ($10) per person in the population.
In my town, the maximum you could be paid would be $1,280. In Chicago that would be (from the last census) $26,955,980.
I would definitely want my family to be able to sue in Chicago if I was killed rather than here in that case.
re: #221 Anymouse 🌹
If “already” is defined as “four months after the shooting.”
I used “already” in response to this:
The article also says that both the police and the citizens’ review board will go over the incident to see if he followed police protocols and if those protocols are sufficient.
re: #224 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel
I used “already” in response to this:
The shooting was on Dec. 28. The district attorney’s decision was yesterday.
As for the review, they should do that.
The family is suing (if I read the article correctly, both the officer and the City of Wichita) for a violation of his civil rights. I’m not a lawyer, but my understanding the bar to clear in a civil suit is lower than a criminal case.
I’m not clear on the usage of “already.” Maybe I’m too tired waiting for the snowstorm.
And here I am back again. My package was a second-hand Lenovo office desktop, which I intend to use as a mining computer. I already had a graphics card from my old place (kept the card, left the computer behind) but after unpacking the tower I discovered its power supply does not have a 6-pin power connector for the graphics card. I also realized I don’t have a VGA cable to check the computer out before I swap out the P/S. The desktop does not have an HDMI port and my display did not come with a VGA cable, so now I need to order a new P/S and scrounge around the office for a VGA cable. Or — dog forbid — buy one at the campus store.
The tower powers up and gives me a single beep, so I know it’s OK. Just need the extra parts to make it functional.
Another example of penny-wise and pound-foolish. The unit only cost me $90. A new P/S will probably run about the same. {Sigh}

Seattle Will Defend Kshama Sawant in Defamation Suit Brought by Police Officers (Seattle Times)
Councilwoman Kshama Sawant (Socialist Alternative) stated she thought a particular police shooting was a murder.
She is also being sued by a landlord for calling him a slumlord.
The city will defend Seattle Councilmember Kshama Sawant in the defamation lawsuit brought against her by two Seattle police officers, Council President Bruce Harrell decided.
In that lawsuit, Officers Scott Miller and Michael Spaulding claim they were defamed when she falsely declared they had committed a “brutal murder” in last year’s fatal shooting of Che Taylor — an allegation not supported by a later inquest jury.
By city charter, Harrell had to decide if Sawant made the alleged statement “within the course and scope of employment.” He concluded it was.
The city already is representing Sawant in a second defamation lawsuit, this one brought by Carl Haglund, a landlord who took issue with Sawant referring to him “as a ‘slumlord’ and as a ‘notorious slumlord.’”

Joe Groshong, an assistant city attorney and the city’s torts section director, has said that “I wouldn’t be surprised if total litigation costs exceeded $300,000” in both lawsuits.

Some straight people in the UK are wearing their pride in the form of a pin which partially resembles the LGBT rainbow flag.
The redundantly described “Straight Heterosexual Pride Wavy Gold Plated Flag Pin Badge” sells for £4.50 on Amazon UK, offered by a company called “1000 Pins” which also sells a variety of LGBT themed adornments.
Of course, social media is not having any of it and critics have taken to their platforms to denounce the accessory mocking its lack of color compared to its rainbow counterpart.
“Straight Satisfaction is seemingly as beige as most straight folks’s personalities,” wrote one Twitter user according to the UK LGBT publication Gay Star News.
“The irony of a straight pride flag being an eye shadow palette,” Ken, another Twitter user quipped.
“Why does the straight pride flag look like a Sephora ‘eye shadow for beginners’ sampler?”
“If I saw someone wearing that I’d assume they really like bacon or something.”
Even straight allies are taking offense to the pin.
“As a straight person I would like to apologize for this abomination,” one said.

The Rev. Bill Hybels is resigning as chief pastor of the 25,000 member megachurch, Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago.

Hybels had previously called the allegations against him “flat-out lies.” He also had said that the multiyear effort by former senior leaders of the church to push for an independent investigation was nothing but “collusion.”
Yeah, that collusion stuff is a nifty new word.
And then there’s the other men in the church.
Jim Tofilon said he believes Hybels was a victim of the #MeToo bandwagon.
“It’s very destructive,” said Tofilon, who has attended the church since 1991. “It worked. It destroyed an old man’s life. Nothing good came out of it. I hope people making the accusations feel satisfied.”

Every good Terry Pratchett novel contains a well hidden lead-you-down-the-garden-path sort of pun that makes you want to chuck it at the wall and break its spine for not seeing it coming.
The only person who outdoes that is Jasper Fforde, who sets things up so that you want to rip the wall out and throw it at the book…

- The possibility of recordings made by Cohen between him and Trump.
- The story that the National Enquirer spiked about Trump’s love child coming out…..and paid $30K to do so.
- Cohen possibly taking the Fifth.
- Story that Mueller has proof that Trump tried to influence grand jury witnesses.
Lord almighty, Trump’s gotta be foaming at the mouth and chewing his mattress.
Oh, and here’s a link to the last point, that Trump may have tried to influence GJ witnesses.
“Three sources familiar with the investigation said the findings Mueller has collected on Trump’s attempts to obstruct justice include: His intent to fire former FBI Director James Comey; his role in the crafting of a misleading public statement on the nature of a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between his son and Russians; Trump’s dangling of pardons before grand jury witnesses who might testify against him.”
It’s gonna be looooong summer.

Found this article interesting:
The only place in America where women earn more than men? Puerto Rico
Women make less than men in every US state — and almost every part of the world. In the US, this has been attributed to factors like career choices and the demands of motherhood.
However, in Puerto Rico, the wage gap is every so slightly flipped.
According to the US Census Bureau, the median salary for women in Puerto Rico was $24,486 in 2016, the most recent year for which such data is available. The median salary for men was $23,711. This amounts to about a 3% difference in pay.
There are some other factors that the raw data doesn’t show. At the end of the article:
However, the same study also points to situations that reflect the same career inequities faced by other American women. For instance, they found the wage gap in Puerto Rico sometimes favored men when factors like education and number of children were matched up between men and women.

My experience at a 3-day conference there a couple of years ago (walking around quite a bit) was that homelessness is the real problem. If you’re going to be homeless, do it where it’s warm.
There’s your number for the America First types: 80% of the benefits of the tax cuts will go to foreign entities.

I don’t know why you would assume that the party knows this. There’s not much of an indication that any of the people involved have any understanding of economics, law, history, medicine, governance, etc. even if they have degrees/careers in the field. They regurgitate the talking points they’re fed and fall back on their shitty truisms when those don’t fit the situation and then pass the legislation demanded by their monetary backers.

Do we have any other record of a President referring to anyone in a public statement as a “slime ball”?
Of course, this is why they voted for him, he speaks their language.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.
Comey’s book is making the rounds, which of course means that Trumpworld deflectors are set on overkill (because Trump doesn’t do any half measures when it comes to lying, bullying, bloviating, or projecting).

But before that, he was railing on about the border wall and San Diego.
The wall isn’t in San Diego. It’s miles to the South and it’s been there for years. Stop lying. The bulk of the wall built is in CA and Tx near urban areas.
— lawhawk (@lawhawk) April 13, 2018
Trump’s bitching about border crossings and safety, except that crossings are at multiyear lows; note too where the fence already exists. Trump’s trying to take credit for a wall that’s already built. pic.twitter.com/xqN2RKkZaE

The San Diego district has about 60 miles of wall already built. About 4 miles does not have a wall. Crossings are at or near lows over the past two decades. He’s doing anything and everything to deflect from the oncoming storm.
Oh, and he’s apparently going to pardon Scooter Libby, which is a leading indicator of how he’s going to go out of his way to try and pardon everything else in Trumpworld despite the sheer volume of criminality he surrounds himself with on a daily basis.

Here’s the first one from 2017.
I’m on Black-Chin overload here in CenTex. 3 feeders haggled over all day.
Morning.
So, I see our Chief Slimeball had the nerve to call Comey a slimeball. And then to go right to his stupid border wall BS.
A play to his base right off.
He’s pissed and scrambling. The only thing he knows is to play to his base when he is in a mood. A base full of slimeballs.
I so hope today is a day when he completely explodes. He just needs that one extra little thing to push his fat ass over the edge.
Please someone give him a wafer thin mint.
I will, however, take a nice leak about someone in the gang turning witness and blabing to Mueller. That might just be all he needs to rage out and melt down.

I think Says Who Cohen is saying a whole lot in trying to prevent what the Feds found in their searches.
Not a lawyer, but doesn’t Cohen trying to prevent them using the evidence sort of say to the Feds and maybe even to the judges that what they asked for in the searches and were granted is probably what they got and Cohen knows it?
I hope the judges rule the search was legit and for the Feds to proceed.
Maybe that is the little thin mint I just mentioned that pushes Trumpy over the edge.
We might be getting to the real tipping point here. Just days away. Last night on MSNBC several people seemed to be saying Mueller is close to buttoning up his case and ready to report. He doesn’t even seem to need Trump to testify.
Maybe Trump not testifying is the cherry on top of obstruction. Trump and his lawyers were all brave about “bring it on…there was no collusion.” Now, they are running from all that. The bravado is gone. The reality is now here.

It’s worth remembering that GOP politicians, at this point, are Trumpers - they watch FOX just like everyone else, they consume the same media, and thus they belong to the same cult. They think exactly the same as the people the NYT interviews on their Cletus safaris, and have been elected to office in the FOX era. They believe in the deep state conspiracies. The only difference between them and David Jungerman (a case I have been following closely for personal reasons) is that Jungerman was willing to murder personally, rather than through policy.

Not surprising a family connection like that might go unnoticed/unmentioned: assuming we’re roughly the same generation
(?born mid-20thC ?), our “grandfather’s sister” might have lived c. ?? 1880-1950 ?? - long-enough-ago (and in Palestine, too) that an American branch of the family might well get “disconnected” from the others. Still fascinating, though.

Make him millions over the years and hear nothing, but short him a hundred today and tomorrow he takes to Twitter to slime you.
Trump has no redeeming values as a human. It is just too bad so many people were not aware of this prior to him winning even the GOP nomination.
And speaking of that…how bad does your party have to be to have 16 potential candidates stomped by Trump?

I’m wrapping up my trip to Louisville and I think I accomplished a number of things. Hidden is a recap on how we got to this place.
C.J. Mahaney and the Sovereign Grace Ministries (now Churches) stands accused of covering up child sexual abuse from the 1980s to relatively recently. The organization had an investigation, but it was essentially conducted by friends of SGM/SGC and was a whitewash. There had also been a lawsuit, but it had been dismissed in 2016 due to statute of limitations issues. (Maryland only allows for suits of this type within 3 years of when the victims turn 18.) Very recently, Rachael Denhollander (the face of the hundreds of victims of Olympics gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar) took on C.J. Mahaney and published her assessment on the situation. It was very embarrassing for Mahaney and forced him to have to pull out of “Together For The Gospel 2018.” I had already made reservations and bought tickets to come here to Louisville to picket T4G18, and decided still to come even though Mahaney had dropped out, because his good buddy (and fellow pastor) Bob Kauflin was leading the music, and there were going to be other SGC pastors there.
The picketing went well, I only had to face a tiny bit of overt hostility from attendees. I captured some of it on my GoPro and will likely post it once I get home. More important to me is that I got some answers out of the bigwigs in Sovereign Grace and I was told they were not going to have another investigation. I think this is going to be a HUGE problem for them, based on a number of conversations I’ve had with attendees who stopped to talk to me.

I am really interested, in a perverse sort of way, how they will respond if/when Trump follows their lead and goes ahead with The Saturday Night Massacre II: The Stupidening.
They have to know that it would be the end for Trump just as it was for Nixon. There’s no more an obvious sign of obstruction of justice and abuse of power than shutting down an investigation into your own alleged misdeeds.
If/when Trump gets impeached and the upcoming reports and evidence get released, I suspect a whole lot of “wow, I didn’t think it was this bad, we had no idea, who could have known?” spin.

If/when Trump gets impeached and the upcoming reports and evidence get released, I suspect a whole lot of “wow, I didn’t think it was this bad, we had no idea, who could have known?” spin.
re: #463 PhillyPretzel
Is this the first inkling of something much bigger? Or the first sign of all heck breaking loose? I know it is the start of something but I cannot put my finger on it.
It’s so hard to tell honestly. I think he’s just going on the record because of all the talk about the official GOP and team Trump strategy to discredit him and the investigation. I’m prepared for all hell to break loose this weekend though. It is Friday the 13th afterall!

Rosenstein might be, but it’s not the same thing as is.
Isn’t Rosenstein the prerequisite to Mueller? Like you cant take Obstruction 102 without taking 101 first.
Yes, that Joe diGenova

Do we have any other record of a President referring to anyone in a public statement as a “slime ball”?
Of course, this is why they voted for him, he speaks their language.
Yep, he speaks dipshit.
Has anyone asked Trump or SHS about the fact that Libby was convicted of the very things he accuses Comey of? Asking for a friend.

Trump’s pardoned Arpaio despite not having gone through the requisite time period to review and now Libby.
Presidential pardons are absolute, so no one can do anything about it.
Thing is, Trump’s signaling to his cronies that he will pardon his loyalists and people who conspire against the nation and undermine national security if they are doing it for the right people.
This is the signaling that the rest of Trumpworld is looking for - that Trump will pardon those who are up to their eyeballs in criminality around Trump because they’re Trump toadys.
With today’s paradon, this better be a wake up call to every relevant state AG to start preparing investigations/charges.

re: #470 JordanRules
Isn’t Rosenstein the prerequisite to Mueller? Like you cant take Obstruction 102 without taking 101 first.
Rosenstein has the sole discretion to fire Mueller, as I understand the regulations, but only for good cause. There’s an argument to be made that that regulation violates the constitution and the notion that political appointees serve at the pleasure of the president (assuming the special counsel is a political appointee). This takes us to Andrew Johnson impeachment territory.
The problem is, if Trump fires Rosenstein, he can’t name an acting deputy attorney general - he can only do that if there’s a resignation (same reason he can’t really fire Sessions). Instead, oversight of the Mueller investigation would fall to the Solicitor General as next in line within the DOJ hierarchy. That was the endpoint of the Nixon Saturday Night Massacre. The other way it could go, is rather than firing Mueller the replacement could simply restrain the investigation.
That last part gets complicated because according to Maddow last night, there’s reporting that Mueller’s team is just about ready to issue a report on the obstruction of justice part of the investigation. That report goes to Rosenstein and then he has to determine what happens with it - he could send it to Congress for potential impeachment proceedings, he could release it to the public, he could direct Mueller to issue indictments (including against the president), or he could put it in a drawer.
Trump, as he has been from day one, is trapped on this investigation.

Great review of parts of the process. My search just failed me and my memory may be also. But a couple weeks ago I thought I read that there was a provision about majority AND minority congressional intelligence leaders getting to see the report if the special counsel has recommended charges so the AG could only put it in a drawer if there is no there, there.
I don’t think I will ever understand this country.
Overall, the polls found voters in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia to be optimistic about the economy, amenable to immigration, approving of same-sex marriage and open to paying higher taxes to fund education and infrastructure.
At the same time, the polls found Southerners to be deeply distrustful of the federal government (only 2 percent said they “just about always” believe Washington will do what’s right), opposed to the removal of Confederate monuments from public areas, and committed to the GOP.

Cory Maye did that; he spent 10 years on death row before Radley Balko made it a big public kerfuffle and got a bunch of new hearings; eventually, the 1st degree murder conviction turned into manslaughter, sentenced to time served.

I hadn’t heard of “Q” except for the obvious Star Trek character. Well…it’s a real thing on the right…
As Paris Martineau explained in New York Magazine, QAnon was born last October, when someone claiming to have “Q” level security clearance started a cryptic thread on 4chan, the online message board and troll playground. It was titled, “The Calm Before the Storm,” a phrase Trump had recently used. Q posted hints, some in the form of questions, ostensibly meant to help clued-in Trump supporters understand what was really going on in Washington beneath the facade of chaos and incompetence. (“What is military intelligence? Why go around the 3 letter agencies?”)
From these clues, a sprawling community on message boards, YouTube videos and Twitter accounts has elaborated an enormous, ever-mutating fantasy narrative about the Trump presidency. In the QAnon reality, Trump only pretended to collude with Russia in order to create a pretext for the hiring of Robert Mueller, the special counsel, who is actually working with Trump to take down an inconceivably evil and powerful network of coup-plotters and child sex traffickers that includes Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and George Soros.
