I really hope at some point we do, in fact have Nuremberg style trials for this administration (including Huckabee Sanders)…although we are not capable of doing it here. it would have to be at The Hague or some such, since we have allowed our own rule of law to degrade to the point that institutionalized torture and preposterous financial fraud (2001-2008) cannot be even investigated. much less prosecuted.

I don’t know whether or not the effort to resurrect Comey’s reputation is because of worry that not doing so will negatively affect Mueller’s case, but it’s absolutely ridiculous and ultimately hurts the FBI rather than helping it. He was not defending the FBI’s reputation, he was not balancing scales, or in any way doing right by the agency. He was playing CYA, worried about the future of James Comey in the event that Hillary won and he found himself drug before the High Inquisitor over reports that he’d “sat on” information that might have tipped the election in Donny’s favor.
Worse, he was selective about his violation of the guidelines and procedures, keeping information about the Russia/Trump investigation secret even as he was leaking info to Congressional Republicans that he knew would in turn be leaked to the press. That alone should be enough to ensure that no matter how “right” he was to stand up to Donny, he was a Republican first and he was looking for his “team” over the future or reputation of the FBI.

Trump to Macron at Canada’s G7 Summit: “All Terrorists Are in Paris” - Report
According to the report, the US President got into debates about trade issues and immigration, and went as far as to reproach Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “Shinzo, you don’t have this problem, but I can send you 25 million Mexicans and you’ll be out of office very soon,” Trump allegedly said Abe.
Attendees were also taken back by what he reportedly told France’s President Emmanuel Macron amid discussions about counter-terrorism and Iran. “You must know about this Emmanuel because all the terrorists are in Paris,” Trump told Macron, according to the WSJ.
The US President also reportedly took aim at European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who criticized Trump for his tariff policy. He called the top European official a “brutal killer” for the way the European Union treats the US tech giants

One occasionally hears the story of the overly attached girlfriend. She is something of an urban legend. Such a person can become really vicious if she becomes an ex-girlfriend.
Quebec clarinetist awarded $350K after ex-girlfriend sabotages career opportunity (CBC)
Eric Abramovitz was on his way up when his then-girlfriend sabotaged a unique opportunity that could have propelled his career further and faster.
A gifted clarinetist who had been playing since he was seven years old, he won the Canadian Music Competition six times and performed with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the McGill Symphony Orchestra.
So when Abramovitz, who grew up in Quebec and was studying music at McGill University at the time, was accepted into a prestigious — and highly selective — music program in California in 2014, it could have been the opportunity of a lifetime.
Except he never received his acceptance letter, after his then-girlfriend intercepted and then deleted the email telling him he’d gotten in.
Now, an Ontario Superior Court judge has awarded Abramovitz $350,000 in damages after it found that his former partner, Jennifer Lee, had cost him a “unique opportunity” through her interference in his career as a professional musician.

Y’all may be pleased to learn that our younger friends to the north are leading the way worldwide in becoming less religious:
So, a short-haired dog story. It’s kinda like a shaggy dog story but shorter…
When we got Harvey as a puppy he ate soft puppy chow and he had a hard time with the transition to dry kibble so we made a game of it. We threw the kibble out across the floor and he hunted down the pieces to our praise, and ate them. Flash forward 6 years, I put his food down for him. He has rituals that he must follow, I don’t know why, it’s a dog thing. First I must sit down so he can come over and thank me for his dinner. He has an innate ‘Emily Post’ sense of etiquette. He then runs to his bowl and grabs a mouthful of kibble and runs into the center of the room and flings his mouthful of food out across the carpet just so he can hunt them down like he learned as a puppy. Once he’s done that a couple times he can chow down.
There is, however, a very strong relationship between religiosity and population growth:

Don’t know how many of you have seen the long-running show Grand Designs, but its Australian version presents some pretty wacky ideas.
I’m constantly reminded around here about how well built the pre-WWII houses are compared to the houses from the 1970’s onward.
And the past couple of decades of San Diego area housing has really pushed the faux-item boundary, with all sorts of cheap and useless appellations to houses to give the impression of things-that-used-to-be-meaningful but today are just pretentious imitations.
There is much to be said about the badness of the Madison-Ave driven society, where advertising tricks based on feeding egos have overtaken other ideals, but nowhere is there more long term damage than to the built environment post WWII.
The McMansion Hell blog is so poignant exactly because we all recognize the foolishness of American wanna-be-rich vanity. It’s all so obvious, yet countless numbers of our fellow Americans in the real estate business keep going overboard with pushing bad products, bad designs, bad economics (irresponsible loans, etc.)
This is the America that brought about Trump.
I keep repeating myself - Trump is the symptom, not the cause.
Getting back to Grand Designs and showcase construction: I am struck about how the looks of a property have been elevated over all other aesthetics.
It is so rare to be presented a design and construction about how a house:
1) sounds;
2) feels;
3) smells.
All that matters is looks.
When I watch these shows I wonder how many times I would stub my toes, hit my shin, bump my head, or slip on a marble floor (onto which a bathtub has been placed. for example.)
When these showcases are presented at the end of the show, fully furnished, I see stereo speakers misplaced, television sets in awkward viewing positions, landscapes totally ignored (or worse, destroyed in the process of building someone’s vanity project.)
re: #28 freetoken
Trump is representative of the faux cultivé . Just take a look at the way he decorates his homes. He fits right in with the McMansion spirit, but with a bigger budget to fuck things up with.
Well, it’s 4:45 and the sun is coming up. Time for me to hit the rack.
A sting of OAG videos is definitely one of the stranger things I’ve seen in my time here.

The project time for these remakes is completely unrealistic. Some are supposed to be 48-hour makeovers, while others are supposed to be done within a week. What real-world home improvement project has such crazy deadlines?
re: #32 wheat-dogg
Most of US television shows aimed at the “home” are more about people watching and fantasizing rather than actually doing, which is why so few of these shows discuss techniques in details.
The quick-flip mentality goes with the cheap-fix time-frame.
So, what happened to Michael Cohen’s court case yesterday?
Wasn’t there a deadline of yesterday for filing privilege claims against the documents seized? There doesn’t seem to be any news at all other than Mr Cohen communicating through friends that he would very much like a plea deal.
For those of us who are into classical music, we lost another great conductor: Gennady Rozhdestvensky.
With the USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra he recorded all the symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich, Alexander Glazunov, Anton Bruckner, Alfred Schnittke, and Arthur Honegger. He also performed all the symphonies of Ralph Vaughan Williams in Leningrad in the late 1980s. Those have been released, by the Melodiya label, in a complete CD box set in April 2014.
He conducted many of the world’s greatest orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Meanwhile, Chinese media are openly mocking Trump.
Chinese media have mocked US President Donald Trump over plans to impose 25% tariffs on $50bn worth of Chinese goods, saying “wise men build bridges but fools build walls”.
Mr Trump announced the tariffs on Friday, accusing Beijing of intellectual copyright theft.
China retaliated, saying it would impose an additional 25% tariff on 659 US goods worth $50bn.
Stock markets fell after the announcements amid fear of a trade war.
The US had earlier warned that it will impose even more tariffs should China retaliate.

… [Taylor] Wilson, a Missouri man who lives with his parents, boarded a cross-country Amtrak train in October with a backpack full of weapons and a plan to run the train off the tracks. While passing through rural Nebraska, Wilson allegedly pulled the train’s emergency brake, leaving it stranded on the tracks at 2 a.m.
While Amtrak staff swept the train, Wilson allegedly burst into the control room and took a place in the engineer’s seat, where a staffer found him “playing with the controls.”
“What are you going to do, shoot me?” Wilson allegedly asked the Amtrak staff who confronted him. “I’m the conductor, bitch.”
Amtrak staff pinned Wilson to the floor, while Wilson reached for the waistband of his pants, according to the criminal complaint. Police took more than an hour to respond to the rural scene. When deputies searched Wilson, he attempted to claim a bulge in his pocket was “my dick,” according to a criminal complaint. The bulge was actually one of two fully loaded guns Wilson was carrying on him, one of which was in the waistband he’d allegedly attempted to reach during the struggle…
One of Wilson’s associates told investigators that Wilson had been acting strangely since at least June, after joining an “‘alt right’ Neo-Nazi group that he had found researching white supremacy forums online,” according to the criminal complaint. The associate told police that Wilson had expressed an interest in “killing black people” and had claimed to have been part of a group that pasted “Whites Only” signs in local businesses.
In August 2017, Wilson had marched at Unite the Right, a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Wilson was also involved in a road rage incident in May 2016, during which he allegedly pulled a gun on a black woman, according to the criminal complaint…

In an earlier thread, someone posted that Nunes said an FBI agent told him about the Weiner laptop in September 2016. I think there were people in the FBI who were planning to leak this right before the election and Comey mistakenly believed it was better for it to come from him; otherwise the agents would really undermine the credibility of the FBI.
I think it’s hilarious how Law and Order and just follow the law types get concerned when it’s their person in trouble. Manafort was in fact getting time to spend with his family until he decided to obstruct the investigation. There are unfortunately plenty of people, none who the right gives two fucks about who are still in jails without being so much as charged with crimes.. The right’s sickness is who they want us to feel sorry for. A friend was telling me that some hack form the Heritage Foundation wanted us to feel empathy for Trump because he became President so unprepared for the job. No one forced Trump to run for the highest office in the land. Now let’s look at the people who the right never feels bad for;- families fleeing war zones or gangland nightmares. They feel sorry for anti-gay business owners who flaunt that they discriminate against getting called out but never the LGBT parent who fears telling their parent their sexual or gender identity lest they be disowned or sent to a reparative therapy center.

I seem to remember unlimited whining about Obama’s “insufficient” preparation for the job.
A constitutional law professor, 8 years in a state legislature, 4 years as senator… “the presidency is no place for on-the-job training!!” said the half-term governor of a state with smaller population than most congressional districts. They thought her being mayor of her state’s 4th largest city was “sufficient” — a mayor who had to hire a city manager because she couldn’t do it. A city with fewer constituents, fewer staff (and smaller, simpler budget) than the head of the tenants’ association at my home manages as a part-time volunteer gig.

It was smaller than my hometown is. I always said Re: Biden and Palin, Biden entered public life while my Dad’s father was still in public life and Palin first got elected statewide when I started voting. Exactly. He’s made no fucking effort. Maybe if he didn’t go to his safe space at Mar a Lago, maybe if he learned to take criticism like an adult but nope.

At this rate, your “occasional hobby” is going to become a full-time job. That’s the magnitude of the deep shit that these guys are finding themselves in. It’s like stepping into a river, looking upstream, and seeing a flash flood roaring around the bend…
re: #60 Belafon
A reporter yesterday asked Trump why he lies so much. Trump didn’t answer.
I’m hoping asking Trump directly about lying and asking his lackeys why he lies becomes a thing.
Just like “her emails” was just about all the media could say about Hillary all during the election process, they can easily jump on the bandwagon of “Trump lies.”
I know our media often sucks at how they go about framing their questions…one thing they will do is gang up unrelentingly on a theme and ride it hard.
Let’s hope this week is the beginning of the Trump Lies story.

Steve Cortes has one of those punchable faces that gets more punchable as he lies and lies.
But he has the name Cortes…so that makes him an authority of “Mexicans*” right?

Trump voices admiration and envy of Kim Jong Un, underscoring his respect for autocrats
Autocrat might be how one describes a fer less violent dictatorship. It sure wildly understates the violence and criminality that comes from the NK regime.
NK’s reputation is so bad…
Yesterday when I cashed a check at a bank, I asked for large bills as I was just going to deposit elsewhere. The bills did not want to pass through the counting machine. The thing just hung up on each bill. So I smile at the teller and manager then I ask-“Are those the new North Korean release?” The manager gasped a little then laughed out loud.
Teller asks why I don’t just deposit the check, and I remind them how vulnerable the SWIFT system is, and it runs at a snails pace compared to ATM transactions.

…Does Derpowitz even know how the criminal justice system works? Accused criminals are held pending trial if they’re a flight risk or a risk for committing additional crimes in the interim. That’s how the bail process is supposed to work. You pay a fine, you get to go free until your trial, but if you fuck up, they revoke your bail and you’re back in the can. And then they’re really not nice because they tend to frown on that.

Cohen successfully deflected questions from the press about if he was going to cooperate with prosecutors, avoiding them without a glance.
A pair of New Yorkers, though, were not so easy to ignore.
“Good luck, Mr. Cohen,” one guy shouted out to Cohen, prompting Cohen to thank him.
Then another guy shouted this: “Hey! It’s that guy that’s going to jail.”

“After 25 years as the editorial cartoonist for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, I was fired on Thursday.
I blame Donald Trump.
Well, sort of.
I should’ve seen it coming. When I had lunch with my new boss a few months ago, he informed me that the paper’s publisher believed that the editorial cartoonist was akin to an editorial writer, and that his views should reflect the philosophy of the newspaper.
That was a new one to me.
I was trained in a tradition in which editorial cartoonists are the live wires of a publication — as one former colleague put it, the “constant irritant.” Our job is to provoke readers in a way words alone can’t. Cartoonists are not illustrators for a publisher’s politics.”
“…After so many years of punch lines and caricatures, skewering mayors and mullahs, the new regime at The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette decided that The Donald trumped satire when it came to its editorial pages.
This has been my dream job. It makes the experience of buying a coffee or checking out at a grocery store a thrill. I go to pay and the person looks at my credit card, sees my name, asks me if I’m the Rob Rogers and then tells me about a particular cartoon he or she loved. The outpouring of support I have received in recent days from the people of this city, including its mayor, has been overwhelming and uplifting.
The paper may have taken an eraser to my cartoons. But I plan to be at my drawing table every day of this presidency.”
