I dunno. I can easily see the tactics being used backfiring especially since there’s Cruz on tape talking about global domination and DWIs aren’t exactly career killers.

Well. Bragging about sexual assault, and not getting STDs while he avoided Vietnam wasn’t disqualifying for Trump. I doubt global domination and DWI talk will be disqualifying for Cruz.

We’ve won a whole lot of close races this year, and come really close in other places we shouldn’t have. It’ll just take work. Right now, Beto’s doing exactly what he needs to do, going around the state talking to people.

HappyWarrior  Aug 29, 2018 • 6:01:20pm

For someone who complains about fake news, he’s awfully fond of using the media to justify his bs. And btw, Donnie, FNC ratings are down. I guess it’s more profitable for them to whine about HRC or Obama than to apologize for you.

I dream of a brighter day,
When Trump has gone away,
And we can stand as one to say;
“We’re proud of the U.S.A!”

Black and brown and white,
Fighting for what is right,
No hate or fear in sight,
This country: A guiding light.

Where justice reigns once more,
the felons booted out the door.
And everyone, rich and poor,
Has a future to explore.

We will honor those who fought,
And we will gladly take their spot,
Protesting, stirring up the pot,
And rid our nation of the rot.

In a brilliant, glowing wave,
America, we’ve come to save.
For liberty, the pain we gave.
We the many, the proud, the brave.

——————————————

Fight on, my friends. Fight on.

Thinking about the “monkey it up” comment. Here’s the deal: I’m going to pretend for just a little while that while he’d heard the phrase, he’d never put much stock into it. What he should do is come out and say “I’d heard that phrase, and found out today that it’s connotations have no place in 21st century America. I apologize for saying it, and I will be learning not to use it.”

Don’t worry, I’m not holding my breath.

Another thing I’ve noticed that’s big on YouTube is reaction videos, where one or more people record their first viewing of a video or listening to a song. One of the more interesting things to see is the reaction of black British citizens to “This is America,” and subsequently my reaction to theirs. They don’t have the context that even us white Americans have - the news, our neighbors, Twitter, here, etc. - so, for a lot of them, they don’t quite understand what is going on in the video. They know there’s more meaning than the can be gotten by just watching it.

From the NPR article of the dipshit nurse who said even after she saw how serious measles is, but antivaxxers are still “correct in their convictions” (funny how antivax works exactly like a religion, you have to deny scientific discovery):

Another screenshot shows her saying she considered “swabbing his mouth” to bring a live measles sample home to her child.

That would be a Federal offense (transporting biohazard material without a license) along with battery (inducing an infectious disease knowingly in a child).

This nurse doesn’t need to be fired: She needs to lose her license and be blackballed. Let her suck on her convictions in the unemployment line.

Any bets on whether Facebook has banned this group? (I’m betting “no”) The group is still active, simply named “Tea Party”
facebook.com

There is a whole lot of derp on that page. It has about 95,000 members.

UPDATE: Rep. Ron DeSantis has quit the Facebook group that trafficked in racist and offensive slurs, following American Ledger’s reporting on Wednesday. - 8:54 PM

Ron DeSantis, the Trump-endorsed congressman who won Tuesday’s GOP primary for Florida governor, is an administrator on an active Facebook group where conservatives share racist, conspiratorial and incendiary posts about a litany of targets, including black Americans and South Africans, the “deep state,” survivors of February’s massacre at a Florida high school, immigrants, Muslims and, in recent days, John McCain.

DeSantis was listed as one of the group’s 52 administrators and moderators as of Wednesday. His involvement in the group was first noted by a researcher for Media Matters for America on Tuesday.

DeSantis’s campaign was already defending the congressman from accusations of racial insensitivity after his primary victory.

Been binge watching GoT. Never really got into it before. It seemed to me, and still strikes me, as just an attempt to get as many naked bodies on screen as possible, as HBO knows sex sells. That was one of the early calling cards of HBO.

Anyway, most of the stories in GoT are very filled with tropes, and the show is full of covert racism.

However, one of its redeeming qualities is that the videography at times strives to be more than just the usual TV filler:

or…

the 1958 TV show could be that the scriptwriter was a Woody Guthrie fan, and knew that Woody had written an anti-Trump song a few years before (about Donald’s dad Fred)… and Fred was already famous at least in New York.

and the 1990 comic — Donald was already a “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous” famous person, Ronald Reagan had parlayed celebrity into the presidency, and Donald had given a few Larry King interviews musing about maybe running for president some day.

then again, maybe you’re right. Maybe it’s foreshocks. Or we’re living in a computer simulation that deliberately inserted clues earlier in the game.

That’s the basic gist of it, yes. You remember the “Wreck of the Titan: Or futility”, a.k.a. “Futility” (which was the original title) written in 1898 by Morgan Robertson? It usually takes that form, uncanny coincidences. And there is said to be a relationship with the magnitude of the trauma of the event to the temporal distance to the pre-echo and number of pre-echos (tho in this instance, the cartoon may be using the TV series as a template).

Another name can be Synchronicity.

Trump…such a manager, the best…but he likes chaos too.

It was never going to work…too many bought the bullshit.

I used to work for a company where that was our daily life. HURRY! WRITE THIS! GET IT DONE!

Then…

STOP THAT! WE NEED TO DO THIS. HURRY! WRITE THIS! GET IT DONE!

The thing is, Sessions is executing the Trump agenda, the only problem from Trump’s pov is he won’t fire Mueller and shut down the Russia investigation. Something I noticed in terms of yet more GOP hypocrisy. Remember how the Right went crazy about Bill Clinton spending a few minutes talking to Loretta Lynn because they were sure he was telling her to stop the investigation of Hillary’s emails? The Trump Cult has certainly made it worse, but a lot of hatred for McCain already existed on the Tea Party Right. McCain’s obvious disdain for Trump has only heightened it.

1. If Manchin were the Democratic nominee in 2020, it would be the most radical socialist presidential campaign the GOP has ever seen.
2. How is a Senator from Texas going to be seen as socialist, other than being a Democrat?

That said, Beto at the top of the ticket, making Texas a battleground state, would be huge. Not that I know enough about his leadership style to know if he would be a good candidate.

He’s off to a flying start this morning.

He’s already had 9 tweets this morning. And it’s the same incessant yapping.

Why?

Because Papadopoulos accepted the plea deal after his wife spent weeks claiming that he was going to back out.

Because Trumpworld’s chaos continues to be the big suck.

Because Trump knows that Mueller has receipts on everything Trump’s doing.

Because Trump can’t bully Sessions out of the AG (and slagging Sessions for not being an Ivy Leaguer is hilarious when considering that Trump always claims that he hires the best people; THE BEST!).

Because Trump is being the tangerine toddler he’s been since before he launched his campaign in 2016.

Because not everyone in journalism is knuckling under his incessant attacks.

Because truth will out (but the damage is being done).

That seems rather odd, but until it is made a fact I’m not going to believe it. Though you do have to wonder how so many came into contact with it.

They had to use Narcan on some of the people affected.

Along with that occurring there were reports that 4 people on the south side of Columbus died of overdoses in a 10 hour period Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning. They suspect they all received the same fentanyl batch.

Ohio seems to be having a real bad problem with fentanyl.

Well, this IS the “Mainstream Media”, whose default settings for political commentary are inevitably “GOP”. Facile talking-points about how Democrats are (always) “out-of-touch” or “extremist” are their stock go-to cliches every time Dems look like they’re going to make gains. Anywhere.
Of course, if the Democratic Party really had its act together, we would be seeing a big pushback against this glib nonsense from Party hierarchy: pointing out the obvious: that the policies and programs Democrats run on and support actually ARE the “mainstream” - and popular - and that its is the Republicans who have veered off the rails (because they have been paid to).
Key word above, though: “IF”….

My cousin Mark worked for Bell Labs which became Lucent after he left the Marine Corps. At one point his 401k was worth 750K. It was all locked into Lucent stock.

Then Carly Fiorina came in and looted not only Mark’s 401k, she also looted the health care financial reserve.

Mark wound up with nothing but his Social Security and Medicare.

Florida voted for Trump and has twice elected a criminal for governor and may now elect this same criminal for Senator. Voting an outright racist in for governor would seem to be in keeping with the current trend in Florida.

Hopefully the Parkland student activities can help turn that in Gillum’s favor.

MsJ  Aug 30, 2018 • 7:53:56am

After all, Trump and his own lawyers have repeatedly argued that Trump cannot commit obstruction of justice by definition. As that memo from Trump’s team put it, Trump is the “chief law enforcement officer,” and as such, anything he does toward the investigation “could neither constitutionally nor legally constitute obstruction,” meaning that “he could, if he wished, terminate the inquiry.” If so, firing Comey over the Russia probe would not constitute obstruction, either.

But Trump’s lawyers have now concluded that Mueller likely does not agree with this. Politico reports that Trump has been privately lobbying GOP senators to support him if he fires Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Previously, Trump’s lawyers had advised him that this could add to an obstruction case, since he’d be doing this to install a loyalist who would protect him from the probe. But now, Politico reports, his lawyers have changed their minds:

They have come to believe, however, that if Mueller wants to build an obstruction case around Sessions, he has the fodder he needs in the form of a January 2018 New York Times report indicating that the president instructed White House counsel Don McGahn to prevent Sessions from recusing himself — and that Trump aides have talked with Mueller about the episode.

The drumbeat of presidential tweets denigrating Sessions as “weak” and calling on him to “stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now” have also shaped the view among the president’s legal team. They have come to believe that if Mueller wants to build a case that the president has intimidated his attorney general, he can do so given the voluminous public record created by the president — and that firing Sessions won’t change much.

This dovetails with reporting that indicates Mueller has closely examined Trump’s conduct toward Sessions — conduct that already took place — as possible obstruction.

333
dangerman  Aug 30, 2018 • 8:35:24am

my thought today on why, as a remedy, impeachment of a president is not practical

It takes a long time to build a case. - this one’s been going on almost since the inauguration

Separate and either parallel to or after the investigation, it also takes time to build the necessary political will in the house and / or senate

The window is 4 years, not eight. he has to win reelection. 8 is not guaranteed

by the time the case comes up, if at all, it’s likely in the third year, or so.

How much ‘damage’ has been done by then. policies, regulations, appointments, foreign policy (some of which is likely irreversible — judges)

Watergate took 2 years from break in to resignation

and like watergate, russiagate is also about influencing the presidential election
so in that situation — a president “illegally” taking the office - even with a not quite complicit congress, he could run roughshod and game the system for 2-3 years

sure there are still other reasons to impeach
standing for rule of law
setting precedent so it doesnt happen again
and all that

“My position is as public as it gets on offshore drilling. Offshore gas is a real possibility. (But) I have said and continue to say that as long as the coast of South Carolina is universally solidified in opposition … I will stand with them, although I believe there is some actual benefit to going offshore and seeing what’s possible. Fortunately or unfortunately, my constituents disagree with me. As a public servant, this is not a legal, ethical or moral issue. I have sided with my constituents.”

Around Reagan we started seeing a decline in unions and in the quality of public education. We stopped teaching Civics, we taught science but not the Scientific Method, likewise with history.

And nobody is teaching our kids about modern media and how to use them, when to trust them. Russia was quick to take advantage of that.

Interesting thoughts. I think Reagan is a big part of the genesis that led us to the world of 2018 because I think Reagan was the first nationally successful national R politician to really play off the resentments of Whites about advances in civil rights. Nixon too but I think Reagan was more successful because Reagan unlike Nixon has a consensus more positive legacy. Historians I think wrongly don’t see Reagan as stroking the fires of resentment like they do with Nixon.

I think it started under Reagan, but things really started to go sideways after 1995 and the election of the Newt Gingrich Congress. Pre-Newt, we could always count on the systems and processes of government to somewhat alleviate the worst impulses of politicians and parties.
However, after ‘95, we had one of the two parties in our two-party system not only throw out the whole notion of negotiation and compromise, but enshrine (and revel in) making those “worst impulses” the entire basis of their political “appeal”. Well, that, and pure power.

Yeah Newt. Newt definitely brought down the legislative process.

They really thought that they were going to so dominate the government that they had no need to show anything but contempt for the Democrats, they have never really recovered from that.

re: #364 Jay C

I think it started under Reagan, but things really started to go sideways after 1995 and the election of the Newt Gingrich Congress. Pre-Newt, we could always count on the systems and processes of government to somewhat alleviate the worst impulses of politicians and parties.
However, after ‘95, we had one of the two parties in our two-party system not only throw out the whole notion of negotiation and compromise, but enshrine (and revel in) making those “worst impulses” the entire basis of their political “appeal”. Well, that, and pure power.

I think the 1930’s version was thoroughly discredited by WWII and the Nazi’s. All the adult men of that generation saw with their own eyes, and everybody else saw photos and film, what the camps and survivors looked like, the Nuremberg trials, etc.

Then in what we like to call the Civil Rights Era (more accurately known as the early television era, because Civil Rights activists had been pushing these same issues for generations already), non-Southern Americans saw on their nightly news what had previously been abstractions and theoretical ideas they’d until then been able to choose not to know about — and it looked way too Nazi for anyone’s comfort.

The Right wing had to start all over really during the Vietnam era and shortly after, and build from there. It took eliminating the draft to separate middle-class and poor whites from all the other liberal interest groups.

The 80s were of course “yuppie” times…when former hippies decided to go against all that love piece and sharing and become conspicuous consumers.

Breaking up unions was another signal of not working together and every man for himself.

Sam Young, a Houston businessman and former Mormon bishop, has been leading a protest against one-on-one interviews by bishops of children and youth. In some cases, these interviews have included sexually explicit questions (such as, “do you masturbate? have you had sexual intercourse? what position? did you enjoy it?” and I wish I was lying but you can see reports here at protectldschildren.org).

Yesterday Sam was given a letter inviting him to his excommunication on September 9. The reasons for the excommunication is that a) he has encouraged people to vote against church leadership and he has b) encouraged more than one public action against the church. That would be the march he had in late March, and then the 23 day fast across from Temple Square in Salt Lake City to try and get the leadership to change their minds about these interviews.

Here’s a story from the Salt Lake Tribune: sltrib.com

I’d just note this is the same organization whose newish leader, Russell M. Nelson, made a big deal two weeks ago about how the name of the church was not Mormon church or LDS church, but “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” on first mention, and “The Church” or “The Church of Jesus Christ” in subsequent mentions. Nelson said he was impressed by “The Lord” to put great emphasis on this. But not on asking kids sexually explicit questions in one on one interviews???!?!?!!?

I personally hope this turns into a Streisand Effect for the church formerly known as Mormon.

I think when looking at what changed in America it is easy to blame politicians.

But remember we elect the politicians. They are put there by the citizens. If we don’t like what they do we vote them out.

So, since the 50s, all the politicians we want to use as changing points got away with what they did because the citizens allowed them and didn’t stop them.

The collective “we” are the problem. We are doing this to ourselves.

Why?

Well, Wendell may be closest to it because he mentioned civics/history teaching. That may be why so many people are disconnected from politics. They do not understand the actual basis of democracy.

Add greed in it, and all working together starts to go away. We (the collective) have not helped our democracy because we do not respect it.

Use it or lose it.

After the bacon is about 3/4 of the way to crispy, you drain some of the grease off and add 1/2 a shot of bourbon mixed with 1/4 cup of brown sugar and a couple of tablespoons of water. Pour over the bacon and finish cooking. You’re welcome.

I haven’t had a chance to read through the whole page, but I wanted to add my suspicions about the story of passport revocations. I think it’s a voter suppression policy. If people think the govt will revoke their passports and citizenship, they may be afraid to show up at the voting booth.

This is awful, but the number of people delivered by midwives in S TX isn’t that large. It’s just more low-hanging fruit, I think.

Here’s Betty Cracker’s take (from balloon-juice):
I think it’s related to soon-to-be former White House Counsel McGahn. In the reports about McGahn spending 30 hours talking to the Mueller team, it came out that Trump’s legal team wasn’t aware of the extent of McGahn’s cooperation with Mueller. I’m not a lawyer, but I find it astonishing that Trump’s attorneys weren’t extensively debriefing McGahn after each session with Mueller. But apparently, they weren’t.

So, in the wake of that report, I’m guessing the Trump lawyers belatedly debriefed McGahn and learned that Mueller was especially interested in Trump’s rationale for dispatching Comey as confessed to Holt. Hence the absurd claim from Trump this morning that the video was edited.

OMG, but people on eBay are idiots. I’m looking at this watch that’s up for auction. It’s from the last run of the last railroad-grade pocket watch that Elgin made in the US. It’s not particularly valuable for your average collector, but I want one. Mind you, that run had 22,000 watches in it, so there are plenty of them out there…

Anyway, it was just listed yesterday, so it has most of a week till the auction closes. Two idiots already ran the price up to $143, because they’re idiots.

So what we can deduce here is that s***s put in a bid of $100 yesterday at 3:43 PM. He’s got high bid, which would show up as about $38, because of Amazon’s system.

Then r***0 gets on, and starts bidding up in $3 increments, trying to top s***s’s bid. Takes him 11 bids to get there.

Then two more bidders knock him out, with c***t becoming top bidder with $141, which would show up as about $110. So d***8 starts doing the same stupid thing as r***0 - bidding up in small increments till he tops c***t by a couple bucks.

And this is all wasted time, because I have set a snipe well above that which will only be place 3 seconds before the end. And I’m not the only one, I guarantee it.2-5 bids will come in the last 4 seconds, and unless someone puts in a REALLY HIGH bid before that, one of us will win it.

So, why do idiots do this? Do they think if they outbid this one guy, they’ve won it? FIVE DAYS before it closes? All they do is run up the price, but since I and the other snipers have already determined our maximum and set our snipes, the run up in the price is largely meaningless.

Idiots.

Glass-Steagall repeal really hit us when they further deregulated the financial industry.

Before Glass-Steagall was repealed, LTCM almost succeeded in bringing down the entire world economy. I am not an expert on financial deregulation but it wouldn’t be surprising if due to technological changes, this Glass-Steagall may have been increasingly outmoded and its repeal may not have had a great impact on financial systems. Hamilton is an extraordinary show. And that song is hilarious (and apt given that Harry is a direct descendant of King George).

Whether I bid early or late, I always put in the highest price I am willing to pay and look away. I don’t check again until the auction is over.

If you do it through the eBay GUI, it just drives the prices up in real time. Get something like AuctionSniper and use that. The prices stay low and you will likely get what you want if you put in a reasonable price.

I bid what I will most pay and then allow extra cycles (like 2x) for it to increase by like $5 a cycle. I have won almost every bid I created without paying out the nose.

You can front a band and run for office. You can pierce your nose, be a bartender, a teacher, a stay at home parent; wear a dress or rip your jeans - none of this disqualifies you from advancing the fight for healthcare, education, housing, and justice.

obvious to everyone,

based on the current President Unindicted Co=conspirator, you can do a lot more than those things:

go bankrupt
get sued for discrimination and lose
get sued, and lose
not pay your bills
say pu$$ygate stuff
say nasty and hateful things about vets, women, poc, mexicans, judges, on and on

Oklahoma shares borders with Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.

Which borders are the ones Stitt will be tough on?

this should be the equivalent response to any campaign that’s not an actual ‘border’ state. and forget that 100 mile, coastal zone bullshit.

rhode island? delaware? really?

I haven’t actually had a problem doing it the old fashioned way (not a big user of ebay).

As I’ve said. It’s teh same lame endorsement for everyone. They love our vets, the escond amendment, and are tough on borders even if they’re not anywhere near international borders.
