To be blunt and a bit radical, I think the true movement conservative view on women and rape is that any inadequately chaperoned woman should be subject to rape by sufficiently powerful men.

After all, this is exactly how things were for most of recorded history, and progress away from that point of view has been both fitful and woefully incomplete.

My voice is new here, but I have lurked for quite a while—I don’t want what I say to come across as a lecture. Today has been gut-wrenching for a lot of us and people will rant and vent in different ways—it’s all fine with me. Some of us have personal histories that make today’s decision particularly devastating. Please, we need to stick together—people can pull back and gather strength and come back when you’re ready, rant, scream, cry, give advice, sound the alarm, but right now, let each person work through their pain in their own way. Just be there. That’s all.

Unfortunately, the reality won’t matter. It never matters, it never did matter. The narrative will be ‘Democrats shoot themselves in the foot by endorsing lying slut to cover up their failures’, and the cannons will fire from all sides. And it’ll just ensure that Dems are seen as the ones to blame, per always. Because that’s the only thing that seems to matter in American Politics: no matter what sins the GOP commits, it’s always the Democrats fault somehow and they deserves nothing but punishment and scorn.

And per always, it will work because that’s the only thing the media will run with.

The powers that be always despise any show of resistance. So making resistance out to have been entirely useless after every resistance effort that doesn’t succeed is an integral part of their plans for absolute domination.

The ten thousand funerals for the Occupy movement conducted by the media remain the best recent example of this.

the plain honest truth is that if there hadn’t been any protestors or even this kabuki of “fact finding” then all that would have happened is that this shit-stain of a human being would have been confirmed two weeks prior.

That’s it… two weeks, now the GOP has to try and blame everyfuckingbody else because we showed them to be the same vindictive cruel pricks that they have always been but are now allowed to say this shit out in public, versus behind closed doors when the booze comes out.

All it has done has woke more people up to the moneyed cabal of remorseless amoral fucks that are doing everything they can to stay in power, no matter the method or what/who they have to screw over to get there.

2 weeks later, it’s “If Democrats hadn’t made all these sexual assault allegations, then we might have been able to defeat this nomination! The fence-sitters might have changed their votes if not for the way Democrats went about this! If there hadn’t been all these wild demonstrations and inappropriate actions, those votes might have been ‘No’s’!”

Consider, for a moment, how much power a billionaire really has in the US. Some simple examples:

1) Anyone who works for a living can be ruined economically by the billionaire, anonymously.

2) Anyone of ordinary means can be driven out of house and home by the billionaire, also anonymously.

3) Anyone of ordinary means can be murdered or raped under orders from the billionaire, also anonymously.

By and large these things don’t happen, primarily because there’s no money in it for the billionaire, and secondarily because the required dirty work would have to be done by underlings who might then be a threat to the billionaire or nuisances that need to be silenced.

Personally I don’t think any private citizen should have that kind of power, no matter how decent they might be as people. It is certainly a problem to have this kind of power in the hands of the sociopaths that infest the GOP donor class.

This is what I’ve been saying, and what others said at the time - Trump’s mocking of Dr. Ford made it okay for Republicans, who had hitherto been vacillating among several positions which at least allowed for Kavanaugh to be guilty, to decide Kavanaugh was 100% innocent. They didn’t have that certainty even after Kavanaugh’s tantrum on Thursday, but by Wednesday they’d gone all in on innocence.

I think it’s less us, who are extremely keyed in to the political sausage making and everything, and more the general coverage, which has….done remarkably to enable this shit and pretend it’s something normal, and even when it taps into a would-be blockbuster like Trump’s tax fraud shit in the NYT a few days ago, it doesn’t settle because they move on to the next thing like the last atrocity was nothing special.

Of course, part of the reason is that we have a political media desperate to treat Trump’s America as the only America that matters and bent on erasure of everything else except to treat it as the antagonist to the heroic ‘Real America’.

DCCC chair: 60 Dem House candidates raised over $1 million in third quarter

Sixty House Democratic candidates broke the $1 million mark in fundraising from July through September, a whopping total fueling the party’s campaign to retake the House in November.

Thirty of those candidates exceeded $2 million raised last quarter, while eight of them brought in more than $3 million over that period. Three of those $3 million candidates have already announced their third-quarter fundraising: Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot who’s challenging Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.); Josh Harder, a venture capitalist challenging Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.); and Andrew Janz, an attorney running against Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.).

Anecdotes are not data, and it doesn’t mean a goddamned thing especially in this political shithole that is Texas, but:

I saw my first Ted Cruz 2018 yard sign today. By contrast, I’ve been seeing Beto yard signs and bumper stickers for months. As I notice myself noticing these things, I have tried to be conspicuously aware of the fact that I hate the shit out of Ted Cruz, and I have thus endeavored to keep an honest account of my own observations, in hopes of detecting confirmation bias. I am reasonably sure that my observations match reality. But I could be wrong.

Maybe this is good news, but I must also consider the following:

Maybe being a Ted Cruz supporter is very much like being a shit-porn fetishist. Maybe, like shit porn, Ted Cruz is the horrific, disgusting, stomach-churning depravity you want and yearn for more than anything else, specifically because it’s so unthinkably awful. For obvious reasons, you wouldn’t really want to advertise these thoughts to your neighbors, nor to the pharmacist who fills your prescriptions.

Ted didn’t put up any signs in 2012; his campaign just didn’t feel the need to. I understand he started out that way this time, but I think they’ve put a few out because of all the Beto signs.

In my little part of Texas, I have my sign out. A couple of streets over, one house has a Beto sign, and the house next to it has a Cruz one. Normally, I would wonder which appeared first, but I’m pretty sure Beto’s did.

That last one was definitely cutting it close. I heard the tsunami was moving around 500 mph out at sea before it reached the shore. Even as it moved over the land, it was still moving pretty damn fast. Not a good time to stall the engine in your car.

That part of Indonesia is relatively isolated and quite poor. Getting relief supplies and assistance to those people (at least 60,000 homeless the last I heard) is a major problem.

re: #140 wheat-dogg

I mean, you saw how fast the car tore out of there, and the water was hot on his heels. That wave had to be rolling along that roadway probably in excess of 40 mph. Water moves a lot faster than people think - hence the number of people that get swept away in flash floods here in the US every year.

As I read other descriptions of Mr. Johnson here, I frequently came across the term that his is a “rigid empiricist.” The idea that someone would write his posts or assert his positions with evidence (regardless where the chips fell) appealed to me greatly.

I never heard of the letter at all of Mr. Johnson debunked accusing President Bush somehow avoiding military service until I found that article here (nor for that matter, I never heard the claim about President Bush at all).

After I’d read that article and how he discovered the letter was a fake and alerted others, though I am no fan of President Bush, I appreciated the work he put in to show a baseless smear against him. It doesn’t help liberals to lie about conservatives. That thorough debunking was pretty much what convinced me Mr. Johnson was interested in the truth, not ideology.

So now y’all are stuck with me (unless he pitches me off his Website).

You may already be registered to vote in these states

I’m sad about the Kavanaugh confirmation. Of course, we fight. I’m just old enough to remember when there were no gay, let alone transgender rights. I was seven when the CRA was first passed, and nine and ten when the Voting Rights Act and the Immigration reform act was passed. Who told you the fight was over? It’s never over unless we say it is.

It’s easy to bash elderly Democratic leadership. They grew up politically in the shadow of the losses by McGovern, Carter, and Dukakis when it seemed the Republicans were this juggernaut that was unstoppable. Even the Clinton wins didn’t really move them out of the crouch. The old Dem politics didn’t work very well and relying on unions no longer worked. It took until 2000 and that fight to even get the DNC out of a rat-infested building, until 2004 to begin progressive media infrastructure of any kind, and Dean to start organizing beyond a few states. Obama taught us how to canvass, how to phonebank, how to organize on our own. The fact that there is even a Resistance with skills is due to him and Dean, people who had never internalized the fear of another “MCGovern” moment.

There is a reason conservatives on school boards weakened or eliminated civics courses.

That aside, you cannot make a person accept any duty, civic or otherwise. You can convince them why it is necessary (my argument of jury duty previously), including an appeal to self-interest.

If you don’t exercise your civic duty, be aware others will. What they want may be inimical to everything you believe or stand for.

About the only reason I can see for a nationwide alert would be for a nuclear attack, so I would know before they sent the message anyway. (All the ICBMs around me.)

As I understand the law for other alerts (such as Amber alerts or weather warnings), they have to be targeted within a certain area of the telephone number. Since mine is from Oklahoma, they would be useless to me.

We have to get away from the idea that media have to be even handed in their treatment of controversy. “Both-siderism” is unnatural and, in fact, the idea did not exist until the late 19th century, when the great wire services found themselves providing content for newspapers with a huge diversity of opinions and positions. The wire services enforced balance as a necessity of business, and society has accepted it to the point that it has mutated into some kind of ethical standard. News sources do have to be truthful and honest, but “both sides equal” is often the actual enemy of genuine ethical principles and should not be enshrined right alongside them.

Speaking of unbalanced commentary, the stainless heroes of the Cornell Big Red will meet the justly despised Harvard Crimson in a football match this afternoon at Schoelkopf field on the Cornell campus. The latter is a strangely beautiful facility with unique crescent-shaped stands topped by a sinuously curved colonnade and located on just one side of the field. This game is not as big a deal to the national football racket as it would have been 100 years ago, but it is still important to students and alumni. With any luck the loathesome Harvardians can be sent back to their barnyard in a richly deserved state of advanced butthurt.

Let’s be blunt, our political parties are waging a “cold” civil war… And as ⁦@amyewalter⁩ argues so well, each side rationalizes their bad behavior by pointing to the bad behavior of their “opponent”. The incentive structure punishes moderation

- it is one thing to point out the bad behavior of their opponent, as democrats do

- it is quite another to believe with righteous indignation that only their opponent is, and can be capable of acting despicably. As only the republicans do.

Democrats ran Al Franken out of office because of allegations that largely were uncorroborated or relied upon women coming forward years after the act to make allegations that they could not prove beyond their own word.

Meanwhile, Republicans are prepared to elevate a judge who has faced far worse allegations and had women come forward with corroborating witnesses.

In the eyes of the media, only the Democrats are wrong for “playing politics,” while Republicans were totally right to want a “sexual predator” run out of the Senate.

But I worry that some are setting themselves up for another disappointment, assuming that the current momentum is unstoppable and the “blue wave” will lead to a mandate that the DNC can trade upon going forward. As if Tuesday is Election Day, when in reality we’re 3 weeks away in which virtually anything could happen.

I’m not happy about the likelihood of Kavanaugh being on the Supreme Court. On the other hand, we were going to get a conservative Justice, so perhaps a damaged one might be better than one of the others with a shiny clean bill of health? It is possible that Justice Roberts will move a bit more to the center to protect the Court’s reputation.

Meanwhile, I’ve been interested in the reactions to Murkowski saying she’ll vote “present” so Daines could stay for his daughter’s wedding (they couldn’t just vote on Sunday?)
I thought it was a nice gesture, a few liberals think she’s weaseling out. What surprises me is the fury with which it is being greeted at FR. “It’s a trick!!!” Apparently she needs to be voted out over allowing another senator to attend an important family event (and he should just skip it apparently.) I don’t see how this would enable the rejection of Kavanaugh if she changed from “present” to “no” without a whole lot of other things happening that could happen just as well without that 1/2 of a vote.

I still think the big media is driven by dollar bills and they go for the easiest way to get them. That seems to be by not choosing a side and hyping the conflict between them.

Trump was way more controversial than Clinton. Even everyone saying they were covering him too much was probably seen by media as a good thing. In a way I think they see a ton of negative comments about Trump as fertile ground to be mined. If millions are complaining well then they much be watching.

I think the last two weeks were a great example. Democrats created a fairly big stir over Kavanaugh so we got to see and hear a lot about the Democrats.

Now that Kavanaugh is elected, we are back seeing the Republicans again. They are the winners and they pissed off the Democrats. Controversy.

In other words, things are all out of whack, but that is what the media apparently wants to focus on.

Dollar making doesn’t appear to be about being right or doing the right thing for the big media. That probably doesn’t get the eyes they need.

But that’s the thing: they do consistently choose sides. They continue to keep doing so, they continue to give GOP far more facetime and ink, and continually give them the benefit of the doubt, time and time again, and when they do report on their misdeeds, they memoryhole them a week after if not days after. Dems almost never get space except to slam them for what liars they have to be and how much Real America hates them, and any misdeeds reported dog those Dems even months beyond when they bow out of politics because of course Dems would be the only ones to pay a political price for ever screwing up, ever.

It’s gone beyond simple dollars at this point: they continue to privilege conservatives and Republicans because they’ve internalized the ‘liberal media’ bullshit and feel they must do extra hippie-punching to make up for their original sins.

Even focus on Dems during Kavanaugh was almost wholly negative and treating Dems with disdain and suspicion for daring to question a nominee like it was the first time a SC nom was politicized ever.

Perhaps we might consider meeting in the middle on realism, as in talking about what we can achieve rather while acknowledging the limits inherent in the system. We’re not impeaching anyone, we’re not going to get any major legislation passed, and we’re going to face a whole lot of resistance to any investigations that are run. If Trump gets another spot on the SCOTUS bench, we’re even less likely now to stop him from filling it. And between now and 2020, every move we make is going to draw criticism from the media who are invested in Donny getting another term.

She is weaseling out. Whether Daines is there or not should not affect her personal view on Kavanaugh. The “present” vote is to not throw the vote against Republicans by voting “no.” It is not a position of courage, it is a position to try and still claim moral high ground (I didn’t vote yes).

Geez, even in my little village board, where I know every single person in town and taking a stand could have me ousted in November because every last person knows how I vote, I have never abstained on any vote except one where the village board is paying me for expenses I incurred.

As an uber-liberal in a very conservative town, I have a lot more courage to vote “no” than she does. She is trying to preserve that Native Alaskan support without taking a stand at all.

I don’t think that’s why.

I think it’s because the head of the news division, the network president, and the board of whatever larger company sees the channel as a minor property within their larger corporate structure, are super-conservative tax-cuts-uber-alles wingers.

The on-air staff and show producers and everybody else, no matter how liberal they may be as individuals, will lose their jobs if they put on a show that reflects their own actual views.

CNN has to answer to Time-Warner, who needs the FCC and FTC to be on their side for cable and internet regulation. CBS answers to Sumner Redstone, a wall street mega financier. NBC is owned by Comcast (cable) and GE (military contracts). ABC is part of Disney, whose foreign distribution (and IP protection) depends on the same foreign policy that protects Exxon and Apple.

The news division isn’t a big revenue source; their job is to not cause problems for the parent company.

Bill Mitchell is spinning agitprop. He would never do such a thing himself.

What propagandists like him and others are trying to do is the same sort of thing O’Reilly did to Dr. Tiller, constantly spinning up wingnuts with his “baby-killer” nonsense, until one went over the edge and shot him in his church.

Bill is too much of a coward to stand up for his convictions.

And all the derp on that thread: “Snopes is not credible.” Posts of the George Soros 60 Minutes edited to make him appear as if he called for the overthrow of the country. How dare an immigrant meddle in US politics. Posting the photo of an actual Nazi war criminal convicted of crimes against humanity. One thing you’ll hear from the Right, if you talk about the majority of Americans wanting to do something about guns is, “Rights should not be subject to majority vote!”

Another thing you’ll hear from the Right is that rights like marriage equality should not be recognized via SCOTUS rulings, but rather wait for legislation to grant them.

Funny about that.

Claiming Soros (a Hungarian Jew) would somehow be acceptable as an SS officer at age 14.

Facts really do have a liberal bias, especially when you reject them, which is why I compare conservatism to a religion.

Bill would mess up that carefully crafted head of hair if he actually got involved in a clash.

It is never too late, as such. However, once past the point where violence becomes an appropriate response, the longer you wait to start, the greater the amount of violence needed to succeed.

Shamefully, I’ve either not heard of Bell or have forgotten. On the plus side, I now have a new court case to teach in my US history course, and we’re just coming up on the 1920s this week.

The case permitted eugenic sterilisation to prohibit criminality, immorality, poverty, and feeblemindedness (epilepsy).

The African-American woman in question (Buck) became pregnant at a very young age. She was put in a Virginia home for the feebleminded, claiming she was incorrigibly immoral. Bell was the prosecutor who took the case to the Supreme Court on behalf of Virginia, arguing “three generations of imbeciles is enough.” The case was decided 8-1 in the majority, with Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes writing the majority decision.

It was later discovered the defence attorney had connections with the feebleminded home in Virginia and threw the case (making the prosecution’s arguments), and that Buck had actually been on her school’s honour roll.

The most egregious part of the case was that her family had gone on vacation, leaving Buck in the hands of relatives who raped her (thus the pregnancy). They were ashamed so they had her institutionalised to prevent discovery of the rape by a relative.

Three generations of women in the family were then ordered sterilised.

Buck v Bell was used to justify laws across the country for sterilisations against people’s will, usually the poor, minorities, mentally ill, and epileptics.

The case has not been overturned.

This was still being done here in NC up into the 1970s.

Debra Blackmon was about to turn 14 in January 1972, when two social workers came to her home.

Court and medical documents offer some details about what happened that day. Blackmon was “severely retarded,” they note, and had “psychic problems” that made her difficult to manage during menstruation.

Her parents were counseled during the visit, and it was deemed in Blackmon’s best interest that she be sterilized.

Blackmon is among the more than 7,000 people in North Carolina — many poor, many African-American, many disabled — who were sterilized between 1929 and 1976 in one of the country’s most aggressive eugenics programs.

I teach at basically a community college in the Seattle area (although they’ve dropped “community” from their name). We’re on the quarter system and last week was week three. In addition, I’ve been out a couple of days with the plague. My classes are mostly populated with high school juniors and seniors participating in Washington state’s Running Start Program. That said, I’ve not noticed much edginess, and I’ve not specifically talked to them about Kavanaugh. I’m only an adjunct and try to be more convert with my politics so that some conservative student doesn’t complain, and the college stops giving me classes. It’s not that the students can’t figure out that I’m liberal based on the material I choose to teach. My 20th century course is basically a course on the civil rights movement starting in the late 19th century.

According to Wikipedia, the last time Buck v Bell was cited in a case was in 2001. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals noted that abuse of women forcibly submitted for sterilisation could be abused if the procedures outlined in Buck v Bell were not followed.

In Roe v Wade the case was cited by Justice Blackmum to argue a right to abortion is not unlimited.

In 1996 the case was cited claims of violations of the Eighth Amendment are made to argue as a last resort (the Eighth Amendment claim was brought up in Buck v Bell).

Well, having epilepsy myself, though I don’t see myself having any more children (I have one son), that case could still be used against both me and my son. Therefore I have somewhat of a personal stake here.

While eugenics was often promoted as “race betterment” or “social hygiene” in the past and today is generally discredited, it could still be brought back under the rubric of Buck v Bell if a state (or the federal government) so desired.

Canada doesn’t get off the hook here either: so-called “social hygiene” was also practiced in Alberta and British Columbia.

If you mean no vote no
If you mean yes vote Yes

The scheduling of the vote is arbitrary
The wedding is a meaningless distraction

McConnell is one of the truly great villains of American legislative history, and I think you have to go back to the Calhoun era to find someone who did this kind of damage. Of course, note how he uses “mob” to describe sexual assault survivors. This is something Rod Dreher and other conservatives use with regularity to denigrate and impugn any liberal gathering or movement.

The Democrats have such a great conspiracy going, regardless of whether the International Jew Soros or some other liberal boogeyman is paying people by the tens of thousands (millions in the Women’s and Science Marches), that every last one of us remains silent about the alleged conspiracy to pay people to protest.

If even one such person went on FOX and presented evidence (like a letter with a cheque), the entire conservative media complex would be 24/7 nonstop displaying the hypocrisy of liberals.

Ayep. They continue to insist that any who protest against them or their policies are paid to do so, yet they can never show the receipts. They’ve tried in the past to show that protests are “paid” by putting out false advertisements for such, but never found any willing to bite. And their efforts to portray things like organizational support or transportation as such always falls flat, particularly when people point out that far-right groups do the exact same thing for their own protestors.

Two of those are acronyms describing the technology, the third refers to the name of the committee that adopted the standard. I’ve always wondered if that demonstrated a psychological difference in the people who named the systems.

I guess the question is this: is there a better Democrat that could win in West Virginia? If the answer is “no”, then supporting Manchin makes sense from this perspective: the most important thing is taking the role of Senate Majority Leader away from Mitch McConnell. So, if Manchin gets us to 51 Democrats, then yeah, support him. And as it stands right now, he’s going to be important to getting us to 51 Democrats.

The problem is that the Senate Majority Leader controls has complete control of the Senate calendar. It’s not like the House where there are mechanisms to bypass leadership. In the past, even if the Democrats had the majority, the leadership would bring bills to the floor if there was majority support for it, even if that majority was 45 Republicans and 10 Democrats. But McConnell has decided that he’s not going to allow anything even close to that sort of bipartisanship in the Senate.

Now, it’s possible that Manchin pulls a Jim Jeffords and switches parties to give Republicans control again if it ends up being 51-49. But we have recent history with a 50-50 Senate - the question is whether McConnell would go for something like what we had in the mid-aughts?

According to Wikipedia, the conservative estimate for the number of participants in the Women’s March on Washington is 500,000 people, most from outside DC.

If George Soros!!!!uno!!1!2!!dos!! was paying half those protestors (we’ll spot Republicans 50% dupes who would do it for free) only $10 a piece (to come from across the country, stay in hotels, eat in restaurants, &c), that means Mr. Soros would have had to come up with $2,500,000. If he paid by cheque, that would be 250,000 cheques deposited in banks across the country. If he paid cash, there had to be a distribution point for that money somewhere.

A bank clerk would be the only whistleblower required to expose a legal activity (paying someone to do something legal).

Or, using Occam’s Razor, they’re anti-Semites.

This is from 2 years ago but it is still probably the best article on the subject, beginning with the current role of Dominionist politicians like Ted Cruz and going on to a detailed synopsis of the movement’s origins, objectives, and structure.

DOMINIONISM RISING: A THEOCRATIC MOVEMENT HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

Meanwhile Cruz and other national pols comprise the tip of a very large, but hard to measure political iceberg. There are untold numbers of dominionist and dominionism-influenced politicians and public officials at all levels of government and who even after leaving office, shape our political discourse. Roy Moore, the elected Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, has been a rallying figure for dominionists of all stripes for the better part of two decades. Most recently, he has led efforts to exempt Alabama from federal court ordered compliance with marriage equality, citing his view of “God’s law.” Moore’s fellow Alabaman, Justice Tom Parker, has been on the court since 2004, and has employed theocratic legal theorist John Eidsmoe as his chief of staff. 15 Others at the top of recent American political life have included Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, Mike Huckabee, 16 and Newt Gingrich. 17 Other prominent elected officials in the dominionist camp include Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R-TX), 18 Gov. Sam Brownback (R-KS), 19 Sen. James Lankford (R-OK),20 and Rep. Steve King (R-IA). 21

Prominent politicians’ involvement in dominionism is certainly the most visible evidence of the movement’s advances over the past half-century, but it’s not the only result. Dominionism is a story not widely or well understood. Because this is so, it is important to know what dominionism is and where it came from, so we can see it more clearly and better understand its contemporary significance.

If you understand this movement, you will understand what is really happening in the Republican Party today and why Evangelicals are so ardent in their support for such an unlikely character as serial adulterer Donald Trump. They support him for the same reason the Russians do: He will destroy the concentrated power of the United States, particularly the Federal government. For Russians this will remove the main obstacle to their expansionist goals. For Dominionists, it will allow the rise of their decentralized theocracy, centered in local gentry as the privileged class.

Sometimes pragmatism (voting for some Republican issues) means taking lumps to gain other goals. Had Clinton been elected, we wouldn’t even be having conversations about Kavanaugh and Manchin would probably have gone along with her picks.

If Manchin is replaced by Morrisey, I guarantee you there will be near 0% cooperation with the Senate Dems or a Democratic president should we get one in 2020.

It sucks, but perfect is the enemy of good.

In my own state, Jane Raybould (trying to replace Republicypher Deb Fischer) is not going to be near to the most liberal Democrat. She will be a far sight better than Sen. Fischer if she wins.

And if the vote were between Joe Manchin and someone who wouldn’t support the GOP agenda, that would be a real argument. But that’s not the vote in November: it’s between Manchin, who votes to preserve the ACA and against the GOP tax cut, and someone who will vote the GOP party line. Speaking of Molester McMallStalker, I totally misinterpreted what his defeat meant - namely, that trumpism wasn’t transferable. Nope, the Beer Keg Brett fiasco confirms it totally *is*, and the only reason it didn’t work in Moore’s case is because of black voters (women especially) turning out in numbers large enough to cancel out the trumpchumps.

Surely there’s got to be a qualified woman in that state somewhere? Pretty much. They would have “investigated” the matter, found no “corroborating evidence,” and could have called her a liar to her face without worry that the public would find out about any of it.

I have a feeling they had that letter all along, or knew the story from their own investigations and had already buried it.

And someone knew it was being buried and would never come out.

They letter finds it’s way to the Democrats and Feinstein brings it up and the Republicans are outraged that this being sprung on them at such a late date and it is slimy and political to do that.

Then it gets out to the public and now the fight is on…the Republicans were just pissed they couldn’t keep it buried.

Now they get Kavanaugh through and all is well, and they can now go and make their points gospel to the base because winners write the history and loser just need to shut up and suck it up.

No republican know even broaches the issue of character. No need. Now they can solidify the politics of the whole thing by blaming Democrats for turning it into sex, beer and white men privilege sliming a great guy.

It is now in the Bible…and some churches will be making money off the outrage tomorrow…just as Jesus would have wanted.

Melania must have spent considerable time getting just the right outfit for that African photoshoot.

Was this a political first lady story they were doing or was it for Glamour magazine?

No proof is positive proof there is a conspiracy

But no proof is positive proof that Kavanaugh was totally innocent.

How does that all work?

re: #384 Targetpractice

We sit here and bitch about how the GOP will do anything to retain power, and then we talk about how we’re willing to do anything to gain back that power. What a way to run a railroad.

You may be leaving out the facts here. It is West Virginia.

They voted heavily for Trump. That cannot be ignored, but it kinda seems you are ignoring it.

They could very easily vote for a Republican once their good friend Joe Manchin is no longer in the seat.

And why is Joe such a good friend to West Virginia? Because he is Joe Manchin the guy we are talking about. The package Joe brings sells in his state, so they keep him.

We can not like it, but they do…and they vote there. We do not.

What you are talking about would work better in a state like Ohio or any purple state. Right now that is not West Virginia.

re: #393 Anymouse 🌹

Part of politics is having the power to advance your agenda. If you don’t have that power, you don’t get your agenda or any part of it.

(snip)

I suppose we could put up the DNC platform and say “no one who can meet these planks A-Z need apply.”

Some of the BernieBros were agitating against Doug Jones, because he wouldn’t promise to push for $15 min wage, or Medicare-for-All. He just wasn’t progressive enough, “might as well have a Republican”.

Fuck those fucking purity ponies. They also opposed the Dem in that Georgia special election, that he lost by a very narrow margin.

And then Susan Sarandon is happy because “look at the energy the activists are bringing, look at the protests.” Because Gorsuch and Kavanaugh and babies in cages and sabotaging the ACA and the tax bill and the deportations and undercutting NATO and coddling Nazis and whatever the fuck else is next, well she’s willing to pay that price for the thrill of seeing big marches that she can jump in front of and pretend to be leading.
