It’s a Trump Christmas: “All Alone, Poor Me”

As the stock market takes another precipitous dive, our so-called president is spending Christmas Eve day posting one rage-tweet after another, culminating in… this.

Words fail me.

Trump’s gone off the deep end, even by his own standards.
The markets are tanking precisely because of Trump’s actions and Mnuchin’s “calming” message to banks.

Trump’s a saboteur, and his base is cheering it on.
The GOP owns this. All of this. They enabled. They are complicit.

Because they are very vocal snowflakes with a huge media presence, who traffic in lies and deception about every report that doesn’t cater to their views

Good thread on Justice Roberts over at Dkos

But as much as I enjoy the occasional thread there these days, I find the ‘nothing short of evisceration’ attitude of some people hard to take…I get it…I used to be like that myself twenty years ago. I just don’t have the patience for it anymore.

Would the market still have tanked if no one leaked the Trump rage against Powell? Mnuchin would not have made his public comments nor have been talking to the banks.

What’s really weird (and I don’t know if I am reading too much into this) but at 2:03p ET, Bloomberg (and a couple of other outlets aren’t showing a DJIA figure later that 1:20 (when it was 21,792 - down 653).

I’m old enough to remember when a “late tape” meant serious market selloff/Black-Friday-level disaster. Thought that was back when there was an actual (paper) “tape” - and even a few million shares of volume would cause it to run late…..

HFT holds stocks for milliseconds. There have been upticks throughout the day and this can take advantage of it. These traders can manipulate the entire market.

Along with the problems of expected exponential growth in “investments”, the increased face value of assets means everything will eventually go up.

The base already believes that the drop in the market is all due to the blue wave in November. Remember for them it’s the Schumer Shutdown, not the Trump Shutdown. My brother even explained to me that the 2008 stock market crash was due to Democrats and helping the undeserving poor get mortgages, rather then the malfeasance of banks.

Stephen Moore, one of the guys with Navarro who gives Trump advice, just said on CNN “Trump’s absolutely right; the sell-off began with the latest rate hike, so the Fed is to blame.” There may in fact be something to this, but he refused to admit that Trump is exacerbating the situation with his reckless tweets. The base will believe that.

Regarding the equities markets crashing…

I’ve notice the past few months that the real estate market in San Diego county’s higher priced areas has been rather cold.

Certain highly desirable neighborhoods for young couples are still hot - the two salaried professionals are still buying in the older parts of town with walkable neighborhoods.

But the McMansion market, as well as the real mansion market, are cold.

I strongly suspect that people with money are / have been hoarding, ready for a correction.

It’s poor joe-sixpaks who, with their meager retirement funds, that have been holding up the market.

The higher priced real estate around the county presented a lot of good deals immediately post-2008 Great recession. In 2016 prices had recovered pretty much and there were still plenty of sales in the pricier neighborhoods. The past 6 months or so the asking prices have been too high (e.g., what was $2M a few years ago the ask is now $4M), and I’ve recently seen a lot of price cuts.

My belief is that rich people generally are ahead of the curve - not that they are that smart but they pay the smart people to make smart decisions for them.

It’s the poor working stiff who gets trampled upon.

Christmas Eve dinner is a lot of work, but I couldn’t miss having friends and family together, enjoying each other’s company as well as the best food I can put on the table.
So, if I don’t get back here, a very Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it. And lovely day to everyone regardless of what is celebrated.

Old joke. Stop me if you heard it.

Police were called to a home last week where a local musician was found beaten to death. His wife admitted to the crime. She also admitted to beating him with guitars from his collection of vintage guitars. When she appeared in court this morning for her hearing the judge asked her; “First offender?”
She answered………………

Trump’s gone off the deep end, even by his own standards.
The markets are tanking precisely because of Trump’s actions and Mnuchin’s “calming” message to banks.

Trump’s a saboteur, and his base is cheering it on.
The GOP owns this. All of this. They enabled. They are complicit.

This is dark and repeats a lot of what I say in general, but I’m going to stand by it.

This is a narcissist who’s succeeding because he has slotted himself into an existing incredibly unhealthy, narcissistic cultural movement. Like when an already fringe religious group gets a new charismatic leader, except on a massive scale facilitated by new instantaneous media.

This is hurting the nation because its non-compliant. Trump is doing it because ultimately people only matter to the extent they service his gratification needs, and doesn’t even care if his supporters are hurt…indeed, hurting his supporters because they have “failed” to facilitate his demands perfectly is added value. The “base” that support him have accepted a cultural premise that perfectly mirrors narcissism—only their needs matters, others exist to service their whims, it is an attack when others do not prioritize those whims so all harm is justified retaliation—and will go along with this.

Some of the people around Trump are saboteurs and profiteers—Mitch McConnell knows exactly what he’s doing and has a long-term plan, most of his cabinet are basic goons with basic “grab shit” goon instincts—but Trump has no deeper level than demanding compliance, punishing noncompliance, and avoiding shame.

Saboteurs attempt to obtain a specific end; abusers are flailing about trying to regain an internal equilibrium by destroying shit until they subjectively feel back in control. Whenever it seems like a bargain has been set, or someone “reasonable” has reined in the abuse and the abuser…it’s an illusion. This is a thing we’ve seen in history before: “smart” cynical men thinking they can put a yoke on cruel, irrational individuals (and movements) for their ends. This is a thing we see in the demimonde of abuse…by clergy, by parents, by policemen…every day.

Which is why this is scarier than economic sabotage…though, various gods help us, we are certainly festooned with vulture capitalists…there is no pattern to the escalation of Trump (or his followers), and de-escalation through appeasement does not guarantee the size, shape, or timing of the next round of abuse.

Of course, tearing institutions down is far simpler than reconstructing them. We could be in the midst of Humpty-Dumpty but I am going to reject that dark possibility, at least for now. GC does a service. Besides the facts that they fuck their employees and hire people as techs who can’t find their ass with both hands and they drive smaller shops under, well…
It is what it is and the guitar manufacturers, Gibson as #1 have fucked smaller stores.
Mom and pops get my dime, and used online.
I could go on and on, but GC is not the entire issue.
Pawn shops were my music stores as a kid, but I was in Philly and it was what it was.
At least GC lets you see what shit they sell online up front and the chance to hold it.
IMHO the industry is saturated with shit even though there are gems to be found.
You have to start somewhere, and GC gives that opportunity.
IMHO.
My experiences have taught me that price does not matter only how it feels in your hands and through YOUR amp.
It’s a tone quest. Never to be done. I can tell high end from cheap, and I have tinnitus.
You will hear in a band mix, on tape.
And ultimately it is your hands.

I truly dread going to Guitar Center, and it’s the stop of absolute last resort for me. I’ve bought PA gear there, but that’s about it. Haven’t bought a guitar from them in probably 10 years.

I truly dread going to Guitar Center, and it’s the stop of absolute last resort for me. I’ve bought PA gear there, but that’s about it. Haven’t bought a guitar from them in probably 10 years.

Besides, I’d rather have used gear than new nowadays, and there are way better places to buy used gear than GC.

But you have the luxury of being around a major metropolitan area. Enough money flowing to keep the small shops up.
I would never buy a used guitar from GC.
I got deals on pedals. Never saw a decent price on a used amp there.
Just for shits and giggles I took my Fender 60 watt Super Sonic amp to the Harrisburg Pa location 5-6 years ago. Said I wanted to know how much they would give me for it. It’s mint. With a cover.
I walked it into the store and the manager looked at it and said he would be right back.
I’m guessing he looked at ebay or corporate criteria…..
Came back out and told me I could get $350 for it.
I told him that was a great price. If I was a junkie and the amp was hot.
I would never buy a new Gibson.
Yes I know what you mean.

Why are the base cheering this on? They have as much to lose if the economy tanks. I’m sure quite a few of them have retirement accounts which depend on a stable stock market.

this is a variant of asking “why are stupid people stupid?” If stupid people were capable of understanding why their lives are completely shattered, they wouldn’t be stupid people.

Only way trump will win another election is with republican assistance via - voter suppression and election fraud. They are getting in lots of practice.

What we witnessed last month were efforts so blatant that a House seat remains open because the NC GOP don’t know how to seat their guy without it being absolutely clear they stole the election.

I’ve got cash ready to go, but I’m waiting. The good news is I own Berkshire Hathaway stock, and Buffet will be buying with both hands. If you want the steal of the century, look at JNJ. They’re down something like 50 dollars a share from where I bought them, on a story that their talc has asbestos in it. Even if it turns out to be true, their liability isn’t going to be 100 billion dollars.

I had two great M&P stores by me that both got driven out since I moved to this town. Much rather would have given them my dough than GC, and I did until they closed their doors.

It’s worth it to me to drive into Brooklyn or Manhattan to find used stuff, because the surviving M&P stores don’t really carry anything I’d even want to play. And as bad as GC is, Sam Ash ain’t a whole lot better. And I’ll sell through Craig’s List before I’ll even consider trying to sell something to GC. By the time they were done I wouldn’t even make back the cost of gas to get there.

On real estate markets:

In the last conservative economic Dumpster fire (2008), my wife and I decided to move from Oklahoma. She’d bought her house there before I met her, but draconian driving laws were being implemented by Mary Fallin and her wingnut legislature which would have imposed too high a medical cost on us to stay within the state. (Oklahoma now has a very high percentage of uninsured and unlicensed motorists.)

She’d purchased her home for cash, and we sold it to move to Nebraska. She got less than 50% of what she paid for it.

My wife (as my girlfriend) bought me a 1961 Gibson SG for $125 in 1972 and it had a small crack at the neck. The G string would never be true. Never knew until I let it go what it was.

Posted this image in the past. This is my Tradition Tele-Like baby.

I had my friend and sometimes client at German Village Music Haus here in Columbus where I bought it help me make it Tele original-like as close as possible. He put in the brass saddles. the single ply special cut pick guard and the Seymour-Duncan double stack bridge pick-up.

Plays like a dream. And it has a nice quiet roar due to the pickup. He set the string height and intonation and it stays in tune or if the weather changes it drops a quarter step in the heat and goes up a quarter step in the cold (of my basement studio). All strings react exactly the same in whatever condition.

I have another of the same guitars rock stock from Tradition with a the same natural ash body color with a tortoise shell pickguard and rosewood fretboard.

Damn nice guitars for the price and the necks are better than some newer Fender necks.

Free Scotch review as a Christmas present for Lizards:

Talisker Storm NAS (Skye)

Basically a light-peaty version of the standard Talisker 10.

Negatives: marketing, mainly: “NAS” is said to stand for “No Age Statement” - it says “Single Malt” on the label, so I’m guessing the “NAS” dodge means it’s a blend of (one hopes) Talisker malts of varying ages. And, presumably, peat flavors. Also, the descriptions
in its PR tend towards the vague (even by Scotch-marketing standards): so it’s hard to tell (by description) just what you’re getting. It is cheaper than Talisker 18, though, so there’s that…

Positives: what you get is a very decent light-smoke Scotch: The peat flavor rides on top of the whiskey for a change, and lingers just a bit as it goes down: there’s a very light touch of varnish on the finish, and not much after-peat: which is a positive to me, anyway.

Bottom line: worth a try. If you have $60 or so to spare, that is…

Cheers!

Then I went to Didio’s (a famous Italian restaurant) and had their spaghetti (Which they made in house). Hey that was a lot better than Chef Boyardee. And their ravioli had ground short ribs.

When I was a kid Mom would “do Italian” once a week opening a can of Chef Boyardee ravioli. She’d “do Chinese” once a week with a can of LaChoy or Chun King Chicken or Beef Chow Mein, Minute Rice and canned LaChoy/Chun King Chow Mein noodles.

Then I went to Didio’s (a famous Italian restaurant) and had their spaghetti (Which they made in house). Hey that was a lot better than Chef Boyardee. And their ravioli had ground short ribs.

Oh and on my 13th birthday I went to a real Chinese restaurant the Bamboo Tea Garden in Bellevue. Egg Foo Yung, Shrimp in Lobster Sauce, Broccoli Beef. Sure wan’t La Choy!

Just ordered a Canadian pizza and deep fried ‘shrooms. Fuck the diet.

I gave my wife a sketch we made together at our second wedding anniversary, of our “dream house” fantasy. She didn’t know I’d saved it for 31 years, so it was a big hit. (We might be able to build some parts of the house if Trump doesn’t kill my entire retirement).

I was trying to remember if I ever really believed in Santa Claus as a kid. Our chimney was sealed off. Asked Dad how Santa would get in. Dad and Mom never gave an accurate answer.

And then my sister told me to look under Mom and Dad’s bed where they hid presents…

The first time I was aware (age 5) there was something coming to give me presents around the end of the year, my family was living in the Hague, and it was Sinterklaas, on the 5th of December, and you got from him what would fit in a wooden shoe, or if you were disobedient you got coal. My parents added a second set of presents on the 25th which were much more substantial and gratifying, so my sister and I knew early on the good stuff was coming from our parents.

I understand the sentiment. But my point was that this was one of the good ones (and I know some will say there are none). It’s a little church of mostly older folks—no one in the choir was younger than 50 I’ll bet—who host the town’s food bank, promote LGBTQ inclusion (and invite worshippers to substitute their own pronouns for the masculine nomenclature of the Bible so that God does not have to be a man), hosts an African immigrant community’s services, and tonight delivered a message of love rather than exclusion. I think I’ll go back.

URGENT COMMUNIQUE FROM GRINCH AND SCROOGE SUPREME WORLD HEADQUARTERS
From: Cthulhu
Subject: “War on Christmas”

It is my sad duty to report that our efforts to intercept the “Red Elf” Santa Claus and his propaganda sleigh have once again been frustrated by the illegal, unconstitutional intervention of NORAD, a federally funded agency that has no business facilitating the religiously motivated bribery of children.
The news is equally bleak elsewhere. On the commerce front, even the grinchiest of business enterprises, Walmart, will close for the day. The only bright spot is that the Salvation Army’s infantry, the notorious “bell ringers,” have finally been forced to retreat back to their lairs with loot in hand.
Lord Cthulhu wishes you a happy and nutritious solstice and renews Its standing invitation to the daily banquet at our headquarters under the Greenland icecap.

re: #331 Anymouse 🌹

You never met my ex-wife then.

There are, of course, different strands of Presbyterian. We were the country club variety. Pay others to do good acts. That being said, it wasn’t that way when my grandparents joined. It was a shade removed from Methodist, but pretty earthy. But it is a university town. In my childhood we had Nobel Laureates as members. As an adult, some of my peers went off the deep end trying to take the church to the extreme end of the Presbyterians. They ended up leaving and building a church and school outside of town. Now my parents’ church is a diverse place. There are some problems. Some of the African immigrant members are homophobic and have faced a ultimatum. They will likely leave. But it’s a pretty vibrant place whose members do some good stuff.

I don’t like going to church. But I have no trouble acknowledging the good things that this spiritual community has offered to my parents. And me, to be honest, as a side effect. When my parents die, they are in their 90s and 80s, there will be a tremendous amount of support from their faith community for us and for widow or widower. I don’t have that.

The sad thing is I can remember as a kid that most churches did have a “Jesus Loves You” policy. Yes there were Birch Churches that were hate generators but they were few. Then the Hunt Brothers, Scaife and the Koch’s pumped cash into generating the Religious Right sponsoring Anita Bryant to utter hate against gays and lesbians. Then Phyllis Schlafly spread her hatred of the ERA and Francis Schaeffer spread the pro-life message. Church after church got infected with the Religious Right and “Jesus Loves You” turned into “Jesus Hates Queers, Abortion, Democrats, Liberals” and that message now uttered by the overwhelming majority of churches has driven people out of churches and they will never go back.

How are you doing now? I worry about you sometimes.

I sold my bike shop. That was a stroke of luck, or extremely good planning that I didn’t even know I was doing. I sold it to a guy that I hired when he was right out of high school 20 years ago. He worked for me for 5 years. Then he got married and had two good real jobs, so he could afford to throw a little money away on a bike shop. He’s still married, and she can support him if it doesn’t work out. He’s already doing better than I was.

If you want to worry about me, this is the lingering side effect of my being hit by a car. Not fatal, not painful, not getting worse, so I am adjusting OK. Retirement helps.

I don’t worry about you much, just a minor bit of concern. I see you on the tweet box sometimes.

re: #241 Jay C

Cheers!

I’m an island single-malt guy, Talisker is on my meh list. And I went to the distillery when I was on Skye. Nice folks, and all, but they don’t make anything that challenges Highland Park, Jura, or several of the Islay’s. Second least favorite is Bowmore.

I’m an island single-malt guy, Talisker is on my meh list. And I went to the distillery when I was on sky. Nice folks, and all, but they don’t make anything that challenges Highland Park, Jura, or several of the Islay’s. Second least favorite is Bowmore.

Funny: Talisker is one of the few distilleries I’ve been to as well. Agree with you about the Skye malts: few are really bad, but if you’re going to go for the smoke. the folks on Islay have it all beat. Though there’s still plenty of taste-testing left (one hopes)
