A suggestion Charles: Under your Fun menu, provide a link to a page that contains all, or say, the last 30, of the music videos you put at the top of your pages.

What is the protocol for hanging around an old thread to see final postings and responses when a new thread opens?

Trump tweets about ‘merit-based immigration’.

To my way of thinking, somebody traveling hundreds of miles, a lot of it on foot, risking everything, spending all their money just to come here to build a better life has a lot of fucking merit.

I usually keep the old thread open until the new one reaches 100 comments.
And don’t consider a previous thread “dead” until about then because people will still be commenting there.

But that’s just me.

This isn’t Twitter trying to make things right and objective. It’s Twitter reacting to constituencies optimizing profit and social balance.

It’s quite apparent Twitter is still a social media platform that is still getting gamed and it’s not in control of it’s platform.

Or it is and it’s merely showing amelioration to all parties.

Mississippi resident here. Unfortunately you can’t blame this one entirely on Trump. What happened is spillways along the Mississippi river had to be opened to send water downriver and prevent flooding. All that freshwater pouring into the Gulf fucks up the salinity, which makes it easier for bacteria to grow.

It’s playing hell with the local seafood industry too.

There is a chunk of land in north eastern Wisconsin controlled by the Posse Commitatus nutjobs. Every election they would send a big manilla envelope with the “Results” from their “county” to the state elections board. We wouldn’t even open it, just filed them away for a decade before trashing them. I imagine that they treat these reports in a similar manner as the nutjobs are not worth the trouble for anything else.

I have submitted another appeal to Twitter, I figure what can it hurt? I did some Googling of the message that I received and it’s a standard form reply, and people have had their accounts restored even after receiving that threat that “further appeals will not be monitored.”

I was polite & contrite & promised not to cyberpunch any more nazis. At least not any blue-checked ones.

I’m still not sure what I did to get suspended in the first place but I think it probably might have something to do with triggering some spamtrap.

Greater Cincinnati International Airport (Delta, Southwest, American, United, OneJet, Frontier, Air Canada) is a nightmare but probably best for flight specials.

prior to the “Recent Unpleasantness” aka Civil War, my farm was a huge staging area for the Underground Railroad.
There was a thriving community here, loads more people than are here now (even including current population for probably 10 miles in diameter).
Tramp through the woods and you can still find remnants of where houses were, if you know what to look for.

There was a thriving community here, loads more people than are here now (even including current population for probably 10 miles in diameter).
Tramp through the woods and you can still find remnants of where houses were, if you know what to look for.
Should things really go to shit, lizards are welcome here. Any and all skills are welcome. If you don’t think you have a skill, trust me…you do.

If the instructions are in Japanese I can translate. That’s about it.

North Korea’s approach is string Trump along with nonsensical photo ops that Trump craves, but gives nothing substantive in return for parity with the US. No denuclearization. No end to missile testing/development. Nothing.

Iran could follow that along, and the end result is a nuclear Iran and a nuclear North Korea that add to destabilization of key regions of the world.

Evangelical Pastor: Democrats Have Created An ‘Imaginary God’

Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress is claiming that the Democratic Party is a “godless” organization that promotes policies that are “completely antithetical to the Christian faith.”

Jeffress, a longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, warned evangelicals at a conference in Washington, D.C., this weekend not to be “fooled” when Democratic 2020 presidential candidates talk about their faith.

“When they talk about God, they are not talking about the real God — the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God who revealed Himself in the Bible,” Jeffress said Saturday, according to The Christian Post. “These liberal Democrats are talking about an imaginary God they have created in their own minds: a god who loves abortion and hates Israel.”

First Baptist Church (Dallas), a Southern Baptist mega-church.

Those Southern Baptists. The group explicitly formed to oppose emancipation of slaves, then promote Jim Crow, then segregated schools right up to the present day.

This constant harping of “Democrats aren’t real Christians” seems to have a racist undertone to it, since the overwhelming majority of African-Americans are both Christian, and vote for Democrats.

Maybe I’m off here, but that particular phrasing by preachers who claim “Democrats aren’t real Christians” for decades has always come off to me as a racist statement.

They’ve been doing that as long as the Evangelical movement has existed. And Catholics bashed all Protestants. And various Protestant groups have bashed each other.

An alternative explanation for the decline of religious belief worldwide (not just in the USA) is “the Internet is where religion goes to die.” Their false or unproven assertions can be fact-checked in near-real time.

And anti-Muslim, and anti-Catholic, and anti-LDS. He condemed the Mormon Church as a cult back in 2011. Mitt Romney asked him to retract that statement; Jefferies never did.

The previous pastor of the church was no better:

[Dr.] W. A. Criswell, in a discussion of racial integration, stated that he expressed astonishment at the cowardice of ministers “whose forebears [sic] and predecessors were martyrs and were burned at the stake”, but who themselves refuse to speak up about “this thing of integration”. True ministers, he argued, must passionately resist government mandated desegregation because it is “a denial of all that we believe in”.

What I’ve always wondered is what caused the Philistines to leave Caphtor (maybe Crete)? Was it some natural disaster? Was it all just part of the Late Bronze Age Collapse? Or just the natural ebb and flow of migration in that period?

Back around 1969 there was public discussion regarding a huge earthquake in California. One theory was that California would slide into the Pacific Ocean.

Around the same time there was a Science Fiction story about a future United States with a huge inland sea. At the end of the story, I realized that it was talking about a future where California didn’t slide into the ocean after an earthquake; The rest of the US did.

Anyway, among other artifacts from that period was a song.

So… from the ash heap of history, I present:

Shango - “Day After Day (It’s Slippin’ Away)”

Western Interior Seaway (Wikipedia)

The Western Interior Seaway (also called the Cretaceous Seaway, the Niobraran Sea, the North American Inland Sea, and the Western Interior Sea) was a large inland sea that existed during the mid- to late Cretaceous period as well as the very early Paleogene, splitting the continent of North America into two landmasses, Laramidia to the west and Appalachia to the east. The ancient sea stretched from the Gulf of Mexico and through the middle of the modern-day countries of the United States and Canada, meeting with the Arctic Ocean to the north. At its largest, it was 2,500 feet (760 m) deep, 600 miles (970 km) wide and over 2,000 miles (3,200 km) long.

We were underwater at that time, which is why folks occasionally dig up marine fossils here.

Thing is, Obama did not inflame hatred like Trump has

If people did not want to visit the WH under President Obama - he let it go. He welcomed those who came & did not speak ill of any who stayed away. He made it an event for the team - but trump makes it an event for himself.

Republicans endlessly stoked racist hatred of Obama and it paid off in 2010 when they got the House back. Then they turned the Obama hatred up to 11 on their 24/7 Bullshit Machine that fired up the Teabaggers who hijacked the party.

This essay is hilarious.

IHOP to Psychosis (goes to Public Seminar)

A recent series of ads by International House of Pancakes has been widely ridiculed. Despite their success in erasing the “Pancake” at the root of their identity through the widely used acronym IHOP, the brand seemed frustrated at its inability to untether itself from the unyielding association with pancakes carried by the “P”. The first widely mocked attempt had IHOP fully abandoning the P to become IHOB. The switch from P to B hoped to sever the pancake association once and for all in order to make way for a world of burgers. No doubt the switch from P to B also signaled an intention to offer IHOP/IHOB as a suitable destination for all times of the day.

So hapless was this attempted rebranding that IHOB quickly became IHOP in short order. One would have thought they had learned their lesson, but a new campaign emerged that amazingly doubled down on the losing strategy of the prior failed rebranding. Only this time IHOP confusingly teased the new campaign by asking consumers to guess what the P of IHOP stands for. Um pancakes? Well, it turns out that the P now indeed does stand for pancakes but the twist is that “pancakes” are no longer pancakes. IHOP is introducing Angus Beef Pancakes into its menu. The surprise is that the pancakes are actually burgers, only now they are designated as pancakes. To add to the confusion, the pancakes-formerly-known-as-burgers includes a hamburger (in the traditional sense) with a pancake (in the traditional sense) in the middle.

115% of Trump’s China Tariff Revenue Goes to Paying Angry Farmers (goes to the Council on Foreign Relations, with analysis and charts of tariffs and payments).

In a primarily agricultural area, such as those where Backwoods Sleuth (hi!) or I live, agriculture is the premier industry.

Even those who do not work in agriculture depend on it, whether they are farm workers, school teachers, or shopkeepers.

Shoveling money at farmers will not revive an economy deliberately sabotaged through tariffs.

While precisely none of my income comes from agriculture-related business, if the local market closes its doors due to the sharp downturn of business, then I have to spend it outside my local area (whether Internet or traveling to a larger city). The money I put into my economy goes away from my local area, never to be seen again.

I make a point of shopping locally, though that might cost more and take more time. I value being able to pop into the little general store in my town when I need something, whether it’s gasoline, lotto tickets, bread, milk, or cigarettes.

If that store closed, the next one is a thirty-two mile round trip. Suddenly I’m going to spend less (though I consider those stores “local” in the sense they are still in my county).

If I have to go to Scottsbluff or Cheyenne to do my shopping, or take it to the Internet, that money never winds up in local hands.

And if they slip that citizenship question on the Website, I’d bet you can’t get past it leaving it blank to complete the census.

We will be doing the paper form, thanks. If they go full Andrew Jackson “let him enforce it” on the question, it’s a simple matter to skip that question.

In the meantime, if wingnuts want to boycott the census entirely (it seems that every ten years they want to boycott it over something), well, that reduces a whole host of federal programs for them in their states (and counting for House districts).

Two unimportant things at Chez Tumbleweed:

1) My wife yesterday found how the birds got into our attic. It seems the last tornado which hit our house took off about a two-foot section of a single slat of our wooden siding just under the eave of the roof on the north side of our house. (The siding is original to the house.) It left a hole about 4” x 2 feet, which is more than enough space for birds to get in. When the baby birds get out of there, we’ll close it off and get them out of our attic.

2) Drinking Tab and Sailor Jerry is a very strange taste.

I kinda went into the weeds on a twitter thread about Epstein and I probably shouldn’t have. I am a rape and violence survivor and my brain went somewhere that triggered some serious anxiety. So why not share? 🤷‍♀️

Epstein is just one rich pig who built himself a system to feed his sickness. His web is probably huge due to the amount of time that has passed and planning it took. And the number of people involved. And he’s ONE DUDE. How many more are there like him? Trump’s sketchy as hell modeling and pageant history is probably its own web of Awful. No way is Epstein some anomaly. This shit ALWAYS has deep and disgusting layers that get hidden, sometimes forever.

I’ve always had this “issue” of being “hyper sensitive” to the suffering of other people. Empathy sucks sometimes. Throw in PTSD, anxiety and depression and you might imagine it can be tough on those of us who fight hard every day to hang on and “tough it out”. Right now I can literally FEEL the hate and hostility roaming at large, much of it directed at women. The depth and scope of that hate takes my breath away at times, literally. I honestly am just over most humans right now. Not all of us, but my list of Awesome is getting smaller. Which sucks.

I wish I had better words to communicate all this but it’s just exhausting and overwhelming sometimes. My own little piece of the world is crumbling away and our country is eating itself alive from the inside out. Are we going to have to completely lose everything and deteriorate into chaos and shit? Is that necessary? Because working hard and doing your best (even if that best isn’t spectacular compared to others) isn’t a guarantee of shit. It means nothing to others how hard you work or how much integrity you have. We’ve become mostly a nation of self absorbed jerks. Maybe we have this fate coming, but honestly I don’t think most of us are awful. It’s just that Awful seems to rule the day. Besides beating the shit out of all the Awful(which is gonna require full time shifts, people) and going full vendetta, I mean what is there to do? All the shit I was taught about being good and working hard just does not seem anything but naive and quaint right now.

One additional thing I am picking up is, where did all of Epstein’s money come from? “Hedge Fund Manager” seems to be a throw away excuse. One thing I have learned in the past 2-3 years is, the rich move money around with ease. Epstein’s trafficking may have been an income stream on its own.

As I get older I appreciate the old adage of taking care of oneself.

There are many in society, and they build organizations (like churches) which sell this or that idea of what we should (or shouldn’t) do, but frankly I find most of these things useless. This probably is somewhat marxist of me, but I find religion to exist mostly to keep the masses busy and placid in light of the injustices of the powerful.

The rotten cabinet, on Judd Legum’s Popular Information popular.info

[Current Labor Secretary Alex] Acosta personally negotiated the plea deal with one of Epstein’s lawyers and agreed to keep the terms secret from Epstein’s victims. In a 2011 letter to the media, Acosta suggested he gave Epstein a favorable deal because he was intimidated by Epstein’s team of “legal superstars.”

What followed was a year-long assault on the prosecution and the prosecutors. I use the word assault intentionally, as the defense in this case was more aggressive than any which I, or prosecutors in my office, had previously encountered. Mr. Epstein hired an army of legal superstars: Harvard Professor Alan Dershowitz, former Judge and then Pepperdine Law Dean Kenneth Starr, former Deputy Assistant to the President and then Kirkland & Ellis Partner Jay Lefkowitz, and several others…

The defense strategy was not limited to legal issues. Defense counsel investigated individual prosecutors and their families, looking for personal peccadilloes that may provide a basis for disqualification.

But asked about the case in his 2017 nomination hearing to be Secretary of Labor, Acosta said the outcome was “a point of pride.”

After the federal court’s ruling in February, Acosta said that his actions were “approved by departmental leadership and followed departmental procedures” and declined further comment, citing the ongoing litigation.

LOL.

And the “Obamaphone” argument was actually against the Universal Service Fund in 1996 (a tax assessed to telephone owners). Amongst other things it was to support rural connectivity and provide the final push for 911 service (for example, my town got 911 in 2012 paid for from that fund).

Since 1985 the law has allowed for a “Lifeline” service (a $10 subsidy for first landlines, then cellphone service, then Internet service for people below 135% of the poverty line, more in extremely remote places such as Alaskan native villages). That is the part of the USF which is attacked as “Obamaphones.” (It’s really an attack on the tax.)

No actual phones were given out. (Funny that, anti-tax conservatives lied.)

Hmm. As a Jewish woman, it would seem she’s ignoring the Jewish Psalms.

As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. Psalm 18:30

The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. Psalm 19:7

If the Law is perfect, and Donald Trump is not mentioned there, then she’s trying to change the Law as promulgated by God.

I don’t specifically know how Judaism treats that, but most religions would call it blasphemy.

Around the same time there was a Science Fiction story about a future United States with a huge inland sea. At the end of the story, I realized that it was talking about a future where California didn’t slide into the ocean after an earthquake; The rest of the US did.

Anyway, among other artifacts from that period was a song.

re: #273 NO SMOCKING GUN!

The Old and New Testament speak directly against what Trump and the GOP are doing right now.

Everything from their inhumane treatment of people seeking asylum and a better life in the US to their awful treatment of women and minorities.

The Bible speaks against such things. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of their irredeemable nature and inhospitality towards travelers and migrants.

Trump brings out the worst in people, and he surrounds himself with the worst sort of people - criminals, cronies, and sycophants who tell him what he wants to hear, not what he needs to hear (I know, I’m a broken record, but it’s still indisputably true). He doesn’t think he’s breaking the law because others did it (it’s still breaking the law if others broke the law - and in most cases, it’s his deflection/lies that he’s broken the law and trying to gin up an excuse for the criminal acts).

We see it with his hypocrisy and lies around systematically hiring undocumented workers at his golf resorts. He’s ultimately responsible for the hiring and payroll. He was fine profiting from undocumented workers getting paid a fraction of what the jobs/roles entailed. It’s okay when he breaks the law, but not when others do it.

His is the GOP mindset - fuck you, I got mine.

re: #288 lawhawk

I can leave the Bible part out and just say that Donald Trump and the GOP are doing the opposite of what moral people would do.

No one seeking help (asylum) would be thrown in prisons by moral people.
No one seeking a “more perfect Union” would try to undermine its principles.
No one would treat more than half of the populace (women and minorities) as unequal to white men.
No one would lie to enrich themselves (the Tax Scams of Reagan, the Bushes, and Trump).

Conservatism by its nature seeks to maintain the status quo. For the overwhelming majority of humanity, that was aristocracy on top, serfs on the bottom. It was only the Enlightenment breaking free of the shackles of religion and aristocracy which declared “all people’s rights are worth something.”

Our nation has often fallen short of that lofty position, but it has always striven to attain it. Conservatism throughout the nation’s history has sought to return to an aristocracy and serfs.

Conservatism is the ideology which longs for a new Dark Age, where the “correct” people have rights and the lives of the rest only matter to the extent the aristocracy needs them to maintain power.

Gaining and maintaining power is always the goal of conservatism, in all times and all nations, to maintain the status quo of the “right” people ruling.

re: #294 NO SMOCKING GUN!

I think that’s accurate. The SDNY is investigating crimes beyond what the Florida prosecutors dealt with, and there’s no statute of limitation on child sex trafficking charges, which means that if SDNY is going after Epstein and those he conspired with to get underage children to perform sex acts, those other people are in legal jeopardy and there’s no deal to protect them.

SDNY could get reined in by Barr, but that’d raise still more obstruction charges against Trump and Barr (who said he’d recuse from acting re: Epstein since Barr was a member of the law firm Kirkland and Ellis that repped Epstein).

I hope Epstein goes down hard for this - and there’s minimum mandatory sentencing on child sex trafficking charges - 10-15 years per count.

There’s also the possibility that the indictment/charging sheet provides other names or alludes to other persons, which could other famous/powerful people. They all should go down. Don’t care if it’s Dershowitz, Clinton, or Trump. They engaged in child sex trafficking and related criminal acts? Prison. Throw away the key.

How exactly is this “held to account” process supposed to work?

Courts and laws. A jury of their disgusted peers as the lurid details of trafficking minors for a lurid crypto-currency are laid out to a juror mom or dad with a daughter or son.

Gaining and maintaining power is always the goal of conservatism, in all times and all nations, to maintain the status quo of the “right” people ruling.

There are a handful of cynical people at the top trying to maintain power and exploiting not only the fear, hatred, bigotry and xenophobia of the masses, but also exploiting their other ideals, corrupting nationalism, religion and sense of duty and civic pride and co-opting to their own power-grabbing ends.

I figure it’s Democrats saying “We will want even Democrats convicted if some are found to have taken advantage of Epstein’s ‘services’.” I don’t mind Democrats saying it, but it’s not going to buy any points with anyone.

David Vitter was thrown under a bus by Democrats when his information came out.

OK, might have misread this tweet, and misunderstood what he means by “connected”. Obviously anyone aware of his particular activities or in anyway involved in them should, and it sounds like they will, be held accountable.

Might have misunderstood him to suggest that anyone who knew or worked with Epstein should be held to account. Obviously not everyone, and I suspect most of his acquaintances had little idea what all he was involved with.

Sasse Statemnt on Epstein Ruling (Goes to the US Senate page of Ben Sasse, NE-R)

“Jeffrey Epstein is a monster and his victims deserve justice,” said Senator Sasse. “I’m relieved that the court agrees that it was wrong to hide this child rapist’s pathetically soft deal from his victims, in violation of federal law. The fact that it’s taken this long to get this far is heartbreaking and infuriating. The Department of Justice should use this opportunity to reopen its non-prosecution agreement so that Epstein and anyone else who abused these children are held accountable.”

Gee, Senator, you voted to confirm Alex Acosta as Labor Secretary.

Either you didn’t do your homework (in which case you shouldn’t be in politics), you didn’t care (in which case you shouldn’t be in politics), or you knew (which puts you in the “monster” camp).

The Epstein indictment is out… and there’s just two charges: conspiracy to engage in child sex trafficking, and child sex trafficking.

The conspiracy means one or more other people are going to get arrested as part of this. The indictment does indicated that Epstein, his associates, or employees paid girls to find other girls to engage in sex acts for Epstein. That’s a broad group of people, and could lead to any number of prominent people. At least three employees are specifically identified as Employee-1 (NY), and Employee-2 and Employee-3 (FL) whose actions furthered the criminal acts, with phone calls on behalf of Epstein or other affirmative actions.

Three minor victims are identified in the filing.

I was just in the Epstein threads too. There seems to be such a huge trove of evidence and so many threads of contact and corruption. It is overwhelming.

One additional thing I am picking up is, where did all of Epstein’s money come from? “Hedge Fund Manager” seems to be a throw away excuse. One thing I have learned in the past 2-3 years is, the rich move money around with ease. Epstein’s trafficking may have been an income stream on its own.

Young girls (and boys) are very expensive. I would be confident in saying that this would be not just an income stream but a major one.

And Mom is right…this is one person (serving many). This is not an exception to the rule. And when rich people are involved, they can buy and sell the rest of us at will.

And how to decide whether a symptom represents something serious that requires immediate attention or is just a minor ailment that will resolve itself in the next day. Or to buy into the disgraceful notion that the level of necessary treatment a person receives depends on their assets: it is one thing to say that non-essential amenities (e.g. the television in the hospital room) may be superior for those who can afford it but the actual treatment should be based on health needs and not income. Every effort to undermine the ACA revolves around telling poor people to die because they cannot afford treatment from their own pocketbooks.

here’s my summary Re us and Iran boiled down from my reading of this morning’s news

- we (actually trump himself) unilaterally withdrew from the deal
- Iran started enriching uranium. going over the limit of a deal that no longer exists (at least for us)

so what brilliant strategy awaits us?

- negotiate a new deal? would look a lot like the last deal (a la nafta 2) though he’d lie to his base. Why would Iran bother? they couldnt possibly trust him.

- more sanctions? what the hell is left that’s not already sanctioned? he’s even going after individuals in government

- war! (and, you know, screw congress). sure drones wouldnt put americans in danger (ahem) immediately. But Iran’s not stupid - they could *easily* have something blown up here. I don’t even want to game that one out.

foreign policy *is* looking at the board 20 moves into the future. well the future just smacked him in the puss.

he’s got no good options, and he did this to himself.

p.s. that ABC news poll, that’s got him “up to 44% approval”. dont waste any energy on it. if you do, note that trump loses to the top 5 dems (including mayor pete!), and is running even with “generic socialist”

I saved a bee today!!! I noticed one in the rose of Sharon outside the kitchen window that looked like it was about to die, perched on a closed flower. So I got a spoon, put some sugar and a little water in it, got the bee to crawl on it and get a drink. He fell out once and landed on his back, so we tried again. A couple minutes later he was able to fly away.

…..
————————

here’s my summary Re us and Iran boiled down from my reading of this morning’s news

1. Polls are worthless at such an early point in the campaign. They just serve to distract from the issues. They are also pretty much worthless later in the campaign when the voters are more familiar with the candidates.
2. Iran can just follow the NK strategy: write Trump a beautiful letter, fête him in Tehran, acclaim his brilliance, and continue developing their weaponry. Trump will willingly accede to any request they make as long as they accompany it with praise for him and especially if they allow him to build a hotel.

It is so much fun to remind them that “no one knows the time” and that the whole rapture silliness is a new heresy less than 200 years old anyway. Pre-tribulation rapture theology was popularized extensively in the 1830s by John Nelson Darby and the Plymouth Brethren - just another bunch of grifters.

brilliant constitutional lawyer is alleging there was no crime so no prosecutor should have been appointed

- mueller was special counsel, not ‘prosecutor’

- how do you know there’s ‘no crime’ if you don’t investigate?

twaddle

twaddle

One might think that 39 indictments, half a dozen guilty pleas, 2 people who already served sentences, 2 more people currently in jail and 3 more awaiting sentencing (plus several awaiting trial)….

would be proof on its face that in fact, there were crimes.

But what do I know? IANAL.
