She Who Must Be Obeyed has been associated with a Latin American duo/trio for over thirty years. In the last decade they have been investigating the influence of Ladino culture, Jewish/Spanish, on South American music. Turns out that the biggest Ladino influence was on tango. Piazzola incorporated Jewish Ladino wedding music into tango.

We are all the better for it. Not surprising that the fiddle player is a lovely Jewish girl.

So, in cinematic news, it looks like the upcoming Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, will be Rated R.

According to the director Todd Phillips, this particular take on the Joker takes its cue from two earlier films by Martin Scorsese: The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. Robert De Niro has a role in this film as well.

The Joker as a combination of Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin? Yeah, I’m 100% down with that and I’m confident that if anyone could pull that off, it’d be Joaquin Phoenix.

From what I can gather, Joker seems to be more along the lines of a character study, charting one man’s descent into madness - and becoming one of the most iconic pop culture supervillains in the process.

If they’ve cribbed a bit from Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, both of which are outstanding character studies of a man on a downward spiral, it should be a damn solid film. And Joaquin Phoenix is very good at bringing life to disturbed cinematic characters (much like De Niro).

China said Friday that it will impose new tariffs on $75 billion worth of U.S. goods and resume duties on American autos.

Chinese State Council said it decided to slap tariffs ranging from 5% to 10% on $75 billion U.S. goods, in two batches effective on Sep. 1 and Dec. 15.

It also said a 25% tariff will be imposed on U.S. cars and a 5% on auto parts and components, which will go into effect on Dec.15. China had paused these tariffs in April.

Stock futures tumbled following the announcement.

I have an old Acer Aspire One netbook here that I completely converted over to Ubutnu OS a few weeks back. Totally wiped the hard drive and installed Ubuntu.

You’re talking about missingmoney.com for abandoned property searches?

Every state has their own website searches as well. Once you put in the name you’re searching for, it will return possible accounts that may be in that person’s name. You can then file a claim with the state directly. Most of the states have either the Secretary of State, State Treasurer, or Department of Revenue administering the unclaimed property being held for apparent owners until the dormancy periods run.

Meanwhile, even as the recession looms, right wingers are trying to claim that Trump’s doing everything he can to prevent a looming recession. That’s bulkshit to be sure.

Trade wars can hasten a recession because everyone looks for shelter and to reduce their exposures to added costs. They reduce expenditures, reduce inventories, or shift purchasing. Meanwhile, farmers are getting slammed again, because they don’t have easy ways to change purchasers when they focus sales to China. North Dakota is truly fucked in this manner (it’s harder for them to get food to market on the East Coast or South as most of their shipments head to Washington and then on to China and Asia).

Everything Trump’s doing is speeding up a recession, and the know nothings and sycophants advising Trump aren’t helping. Attacking Powell and trying to eliminate the independence of the Fed only destabilizes things further.

It’s as though they’re purposefully trying to sabotage the government and economy.

My understanding is that Smoot-Hawley was pretty much the final nail in the coffin.

Well, losing the Executive Branch to the Dems is also going to free up the DoJ from obstructing getting to the bottom of the interference from the Russians and their NRA puppets. Fox and friends will spin it constantly as a witch hunt, but a lot of dirt will come out of that hole regarding corruption and politicians selling out to foreign powers for personal gain. Which, in the long run, pretty much ruins the GOP wrapping themselves in the flag.

Unfortunately, even the most optimistic scenarios I’ve seen so far* only point to at best a 52-48 Dem Senate for the next Congress: which frankly, IMO, isn’t enough to circumvent serious GOP obstructionism - especially if Moscow Mitch gets returned** (and stays as Leader). Although assuming also a (D) President and House, one has to wonder just how much obstructionism the public is willing to put up with, and how much pressure they (i.e. liberals, moderates, non-ideologues, sane folk) are going to be able to put on recalcitrant Rs. In too many states, I’m afraid it won’t be near enough to counteract the pressure from Wingnuttia, but I have a feeling that the flaws in the Senate GOP’s “roadblock” strategy are finally starting to show - a bit.

The Joker as a combination of Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin? Yeah, I’m 100% down with that and I’m confident that if anyone could pull that off, it’d be Joaquin Phoenix.

Since the GOP controlled the Senate, there was nothing Obama could do to get Garland confirmed. It wasn’t the filibuster that stopped the appointment, it was Moscow Mitch.

The Democrats had the House for only two years — so most legislation was doomed after that. But you are right about the public option.

I am terrified though of what happens when the GOP controls all branches of the government again without a filibuster — the evil they will accomplish is breathtaking in scope.

Either elections have consequences, or we live with a Congress in which no laws pass except the limited provisions of reconciliation bills. There are limits imposed by the voters on what even Republicans can pass. ACA repeal wasn’t stopped by the filibuster, but outraged voters calling their Congressmen and saying no.

Meanwhile, farmers are getting slammed again, because they don’t have easy ways to change purchasers when they focus sales to China. North Dakota is truly fucked in this manner (it’s harder for them to get food to market on the East Coast or South as most of their shipments head to Washington and then on to China and Asia).

Everything Trump’s doing is speeding up a recession, and the know nothings and sycophants advising Trump aren’t helping. Attacking Powell and trying to eliminate the independence of the Fed only destabilizes things further.

It’s as though they’re purposefully trying to sabotage the government and economy.

From what I’ve read, this film seems to be influenced by Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke”, which has to be one of the most influential one-shot comics ever written. It influenced Tim Burton’s original Batman and it definitely influenced Heath Ledger’s take on the character.

This new film is an origin story flick, which could be interesting if done right. One thing I genuinely liked about Nolan’s perspective on the Joker is that in The Dark Knight, he has no background story at all - nothing. He’s a pure enigma.

From what I’ve read, this film seems to be influenced by Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke”, which has to be one of the most influential one-shot comics ever written. It influenced Tim Burton’s original Batman and it definitely influenced Heath Ledger’s take on the character.

This new film is an origin story flick, which could be interesting if done right. One thing I genuinely liked about Nolan’s perspective on the Joker is that in The Dark Knight, he has no background story at all - nothing. He’s a pure enigma.

Everyone in my family was told that my mom’s mom was part Blackfoot. My grandfather always called her “my

She underwent a sigmoid colectomy followed by “precautionary” chemotherapy and radiation treatments which began in October and finished in June 2000. According to Ginsburg, “Following the treatments, it is anticipated that I will require only routine examinations to assure my continuing good health.”

It was during one of those routine examinations, 10 years later, when her screening CT scan found a single lesion, measuring about 1 centimeter across, in the center of Ginsburg’s pancreas. She underwent surgery to remove the body and tail of the pancreas along with her spleen.

That was lung cancer, this is pancreatic. It is apparently now undetecable. But pancreatic cancer is never a good thing.

I know someone whose pancreatic cancer actually went into full remission, because he was one of the very rare and lucky ones who caught it early enough. Everyone at work started noticing his skin had a weird yellowish tinge to it, and prodded him to see a doctor, who ran all the right tests and caught it in the very early stages.

That had to have been a good 8 years ago by now, if not longer. He doesn’t work there anymore, but last I heard he was in good health with no signs of any relapse.

But again - that’s rare.

For the current governor race, the polling is in favour of Democrat Beshear with 48% to Republican Bevin’s 39% with some undecided and a few percent for the Libertarian.

McConnell has been deeply unpopular for a long time, and Amy McGrath seems a very strong opponent. It’s hard to imagine any scenario where the Senate race isn’t very very close, if not already in Amy’s favour.

Most Kentuckians do not like Bevin. Andy Beshear is extremely likeable and has been an excellent AG.
