She Who Must Be Obeyed has been associated with a Latin American duo/trio for over thirty years. In the last decade they have been investigating the influence of Ladino culture, Jewish/Spanish, on South American music. Turns out that the biggest Ladino influence was on tango. Piazzola incorporated Jewish Ladino wedding music into tango.

We are all the better for it. Not surprising that the fiddle player is a lovely Jewish girl.

More from the story. THIS GUY IS A WACKO AND SHOULD NOT BE TEACHING ENGLISH. Whatever happened to the days of reading Wordsworth and Flannery O’Connor and Malcolm X?

Approached in his classroom after the publication of this story, Belmore said: “I think I only have one response to give you. It’s a question and it’s three words. Who is Q?”

Asked how QAnon is pertinent to his English composition class, Belmore responded, “Who is Q?” He added that he plans to inform campus security that this reporter showed up in his classroom.

One student said Belmore brought up QAnon while discussing the syllabus for his class. Then he showed the video.

“Afterwards, [Belmore] just kept talking about how there are a bunch of criminals and they’re going to get caught now that Trump is the president,” the student said, adding, “Belmore believes that Q is actually JFK Jr. and he just faked his death.”

I still remember Bircher high school teachers who said that LBJ had JFK executed because JFK was going to expose the Council on Foreign Relations as the shadow Bolshevik government of the US. Oh and the evils of fluoride, Social Security and especially Medicare as well.

And then there were the college professors who were so far right they fell into the Constitutional Party (Pennsylvania’s affiliate of George Wallace’s AIP). They kept the mimeograph machine smoking with handbills saying Ford’s pick of Rockefeller as VP was proof he was going to surrender to the Russians…

Bernie’s campaign could basically be summed up as “It’s my turn!”

He can’t claim that he’s the best positioned to beat Trump, because the polls show he’s not.

He can’t claim that he’s the only “true” progressive in the race, because Warren is out there showing that you can be progressive but also likable.

He can’t claim to be working for “the working class” because Biden has that corner of the market covered.

So he’s left letting his surrogates go around, acting like a bunch of low-rent thugs by beating up on anybody who criticizes him in print while pushing a retread of “The Establishment is trying to sabotage him!”

So, in cinematic news, it looks like the upcoming Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, will be Rated R.

According to the director Todd Phillips, this particular take on the Joker takes its cue from two earlier films by Martin Scorsese: The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. Robert De Niro has a role in this film as well.

The Joker as a combination of Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin? Yeah, I’m 100% down with that and I’m confident that if anyone could pull that off, it’d be Joaquin Phoenix.

JOKER Official Trailer (2019) Joaquin Phoenix, DC Movie HD

“I used to think that my life was a tragedy. But now I realize….it’s a comedy”.

Phoenix’s delivery on that line sent a chill down my spine. If the movie is as good as the trailer (knock on wood) then Joker could end up as one of the greatest comic-book films of all time.

“We need to deal with this very dangerous idea that says being pro-Jewish means you have to be pro-Israeli or being pro-Israeli means you’re automatically pro-Jewish & you’re immunized from the charge of anti-Semitsm. Lots of anti-Semites support Israel & Netanyahu.”

That requires nuance.

Something that was abandoned long ago in the shouting match that passes for modern political discourse.

To understand these nuances requires education, background knowledge and a sense of history, something that was also abandoned in the course of budget cuts in the wake of tax cuts to encourage Job Creators to stimulate the economy…

We really paved the way for this sort of demagoguery.

From what I can gather, Joker seems to be more along the lines of a character study, charting one man’s descent into madness - and becoming one of the most iconic pop culture supervillains in the process.

If they’ve cribbed a bit from Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, both of which are outstanding character studies of a man on a downward spiral, it should be a damn solid film. And Joaquin Phoenix is very good at bringing life to disturbed cinematic characters (much like De Niro).

Rupert Pupkin was one of De Niro’s best roles (along with Travis Bickle) and for me at least, The King of Comedy is criminally underappreciated.

The King of Comedy was, in some ways, eerily prescient about celebrity worship and the dark undertones and consquences that are associated with it. The film was made in the pre-social media era, but I can easily picture Pupkin as a Twitter or Facebook stalker, obsessed with being famous. And ironically, becoming famous for his desperate criminal activities, as in the film.

David Koch, the billionaire industrialist and conservative activist, has reportedly died.

Sources close to the family confirmed the 79-year-old Koch, who retired from the privately owned Koch Industries last year, passed away, according to New Yorker reporter Jane Mayer.

Koch took over as president of Koch Engineering in 1979, and became co-owner of Koch Industries four years later with his older brother, Charles Koch.

He was ranked the 11th-wealthiest person in the world upon his retirement, with an estimated net worth of $51 billion, and both he and his brother donated much of their fortune to conservative political candidates and causes.

China said Friday that it will impose new tariffs on $75 billion worth of U.S. goods and resume duties on American autos.

Chinese State Council said it decided to slap tariffs ranging from 5% to 10% on $75 billion U.S. goods, in two batches effective on Sep. 1 and Dec. 15.

It also said a 25% tariff will be imposed on U.S. cars and a 5% on auto parts and components, which will go into effect on Dec.15. China had paused these tariffs in April.

Stock futures tumbled following the announcement.

You’re talking about missingmoney.com for abandoned property searches?

Every state has their own website searches as well. Once you put in the name you’re searching for, it will return possible accounts that may be in that person’s name. You can then file a claim with the state directly. Most of the states have either the Secretary of State, State Treasurer, or Department of Revenue administering the unclaimed property being held for apparent owners until the dormancy periods run.

re: #76 Dr Lizardo

Trump’s busy claiming that he’s winning this trade war and that it’s easy.

He’s busy claiming he’s got over 50% approval (he doesn’t). He hasn’t be above water since he took office. Majority of the nation disapproved.

There’s one group of people who support Trump: uneducated white folks (aka the know nothing Fox misinformed masses).

Meanwhile, even as the recession looms, right wingers are trying to claim that Trump’s doing everything he can to prevent a looming recession. That’s bulkshit to be sure.

Trade wars can hasten a recession because everyone looks for shelter and to reduce their exposures to added costs. They reduce expenditures, reduce inventories, or shift purchasing. Meanwhile, farmers are getting slammed again, because they don’t have easy ways to change purchasers when they focus sales to China. North Dakota is truly fucked in this manner (it’s harder for them to get food to market on the East Coast or South as most of their shipments head to Washington and then on to China and Asia).

Everything Trump’s doing is speeding up a recession, and the know nothings and sycophants advising Trump aren’t helping. Attacking Powell and trying to eliminate the independence of the Fed only destabilizes things further.

It’s as though they’re purposefully trying to sabotage the government and economy.

Sounds eerily similar to what Herbert Hoover did in the wake of the 1929 Crash. He started piling on tariffs (when he signed the Smoot-Hawley Act into law in 1930) and it only exacerbated an already dangerously shaky economic situation.

My understanding is that Smoot-Hawley was pretty much the final nail in the coffin.

Holy shit. I have like $1000 showing.

I tried to claim something from IL before and they were like Nah.

I’m not holding my breath here.

I did a search via one of these about two years ago. Found five things under my name and recovered about $500 that way. (Not sure it was the one with this link, but it essentially linked me to a state site to search and then make the claim through.)

Tin-foil hat time: Maybe this is how the GOP can get rid of Trump.

“Hey, Donald, yeah…..you need to get out there and start telling your supporters it’s time to cut Social Security and Medicare because it’s costing too much and we’ve gotta trim the fat.”

Well, I’m sure that the President and his Administration ARE working quite hard in the face of repeated news about an expected recession….

And I’m equally sure that their main efforts are going to be exerted on a massive PR effort to shift the blame for any economic downturn onto somebody - anybody - else (Obama, the Chinese, Democrats, Europeans, Antifa, etc.): rather than admit the least flaw in the Trump/GOP economic “plan”.

Which effort our national disgrace of a President is likely to promote in his usual manner - probably via another windy address to a tame MAGA rally in the boondocks “Heartland” -

1. Misstate/exaggerate (or outright lie about) rosy economic conditions.
2. Loudly bitch about not getting credit for said rosiness.
3. Equally loudly: dump on any/all critics.
4. Preemptively blame-shift (as above) should said rosiness fade.
5. Repeat points 1-4 .
6. Make sure the audience departs absolutely convinced that any and all economic problems the country might face are due entirely to the evil machinations of Donald Trump’s critics/”enemies”, and only President MAGA can save the nation….

And then choke on that sigh once they realize that the best case scenario if Donny loses is that the Dem who wins does so by such a thin margin that they’ve little to no coattails. Otherwise, they may very well lose the Senate, which may embolden the Senate Dems enough to consider shitting on Mitch’s lawn by finally taking an axe to the filibuster.

Well, losing the Executive Branch to the Dems is also going to free up the DoJ from obstructing getting to the bottom of the interference from the Russians and their NRA puppets. Fox and friends will spin it constantly as a witch hunt, but a lot of dirt will come out of that hole regarding corruption and politicians selling out to foreign powers for personal gain. Which, in the long run, pretty much ruins the GOP wrapping themselves in the flag.

Unfortunately, even the most optimistic scenarios I’ve seen so far* only point to at best a 52-48 Dem Senate for the next Congress: which frankly, IMO, isn’t enough to circumvent serious GOP obstructionism - especially if Moscow Mitch gets returned** (and stays as Leader). Although assuming also a (D) President and House, one has to wonder just how much obstructionism the public is willing to put up with, and how much pressure they (i.e. liberals, moderates, non-ideologues, sane folk) are going to be able to put on recalcitrant Rs. In too many states, I’m afraid it won’t be near enough to counteract the pressure from Wingnuttia, but I have a feeling that the flaws in the Senate GOP’s “roadblock” strategy are finally starting to show - a bit.

Ilhan and Rashida both have criticisms of Israel and Israeli policies towards Palestinians.

That is not the same as Trump explicitly making anti-Semitic comments about Jews, dual loyalty anti-Semitic tropes, and equating goddamned Nazis with the people protesting them.

These are not the same. No matter how much the right wing extremists want to, they aren’t the same.

Not supporting everything Israel does doesn’t mean you’re anti-Semitic. Jews don’t agree on what Israel is doing. Not agreeing with Bibi or Trump on Israel doesn’t make you anti-Semitic.

Questioning the loyalty of Jews who don’t support Israel and Trump is an explicit callback to anti-Semitic tropes.

And that doesn’t begin to capture the anti-Semitic stuff Trump has said in tweets, meetings, and on video.

Others accepted it willingly because Israel is in such a precarious position. Still others seek out this kind of support because of the business opportunities it brings (travel/tourism, etc). My brother and I have been going around in circles about this. On the one hand, the trailers look GREAT. On the other hand, it’s the DC Universe. But Robert DeNiro is in it! But it’s DC! Etc., etc. We’re going to wait for reviews.

Memphis Slim - Mother Earth

From the 444 A.D. funeral eulogy of Patriarch Cyrillus, who apparently was despised even by his own co-religionists, as this was reputedly said by one of the Bishops of Alexandria:

“At last this odious man is dead. His departure causes his survivors to rejoice, but is bound to distress the dead. They will not be long in becoming fed up with him and sending him back to us. Therefore, place a very heavy stone on his tomb so that we will not run the risk of seeing him again, even as a ghost.”

I think people are just going to have to think about that more than they have. “If you don’t like that the GOP is planning on cutting all funding for special education, then maybe you shouldn’t vote for them.” (In quotes so that you know it’s not meant to be directed at you.)

My daily warning: The real problem is that you can get a majority in the Senate through states representing less than 20% of the population. This is a poison that will destroy us — a large majority of the population can support these programs, but thanks to the Constitution, this does not matter at all in the Senate. Indeed, theoretically only 10% of the total population could have voted for these miscreants but they are in charge. And in the House, thanks to gerrymandering, theoretically you can have a minority of the population (not 10% — maybe about 31%) running the institution, even if there isn’t voter suppression.

re: #145 Hecuba’s daughter

Since the GOP controlled the Senate, there was nothing Obama could do to get Garland confirmed. It wasn’t the filibuster that stopped the appointment, it was Moscow Mitch.

The Democrats had the House for only two years — so most legislation was doomed after that. But you are right about the public option.

I am terrified though of what happens when the GOP controls all branches of the government again without a filibuster — the evil they will accomplish is breathtaking in scope.

Either elections have consequences, or we live with a Congress in which no laws pass except the limited provisions of reconciliation bills. There are limits imposed by the voters on what even Republicans can pass. ACA repeal wasn’t stopped by the filibuster, but outraged voters calling their Congressmen and saying no.

And therefore it will be even more important for people to understand how their Senators will vote, because it will probably only take 5% more to reach a filibuster proof majority.

The Senate has a built-in mechanism for slowing things down: Only 1/3 of the senators are elected every two years.

I get tha tpeople are afraid of what the GOP might do. But it also makes it impossible for Democrats to do anything, which only helps the GOP.

Reasons why, if the Democrats win the Senate, they should vote statehood for D.C. and P.R. at least, to get poc more representation. I would give several other islands statehood as well; climate change is an existential threat to them right now.

re: #128 Dr Lizardo

So far, the only one DC has really gotten right was Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (though for me, the ending of that was a bit over-the-top, but overall a DC film done right, well-written, well-directed and perfectly cast).

The Dark knight series was pretty good. I thought Wonder Woman was pretty over rated. It was an ok movie for DC but DC has set the bar so low for that it doesn’t say much. Ares was such a boring villain, the whole movie was dark and not in a good gritty batman sort of way, but just sort of grey. A lot of the action was quite good, but the final boss fight scene was bad.

Jaoquin Phoenix is fantastic, but the problem I had watching the trailer was that it looked like a great twisted character, but not really the Joker to me.

Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy doesn’t even seem - to me - as DC. They exist outside the DC cinematic universe.

When I watched The Dark Knight, I completely forgot I was watching a Batman movie. That’s largely owing to Heath Ledger’s masterclass portrayal of the Joker.

DC tends to be so hit and miss.

Dark Knight Trilogy - Awesome
Wonder Woman - Awesome
Batman vs. Superman - entertaining but disappointing
Justice League - disappointing
Suicide Squad - diappointing
Aquaman - Fun, but way too much overreliance on crazy CGI visuals and less emphasis on story.

Trump reminds me, in some sense, of the titular character in H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Quest of Iranon”.

Iranon is this golden-haired youth who’s always singing songs of Aira, the city of his childhood, where he was a prince.

Finally, after many, many years, years in which he’s never aged so much as a single day, Iranan encounters an old shepherd and asks him if he knows of Aira. The shepherd tells him that he’s heard of it, because when he was a child, there was a beggar’s boy who was always talking about it. This boy, who thought he was a prince, was laughed at by everyone and finally ran away.

With the truth revealed, that Aira was nothing more than a figment of his imagination, Iranon loses his eternal youth. Now suddenly a frail and elderly man, Iranon wanders into the quicksands to his death.

Trump’s like that. When reality finally catches up to him, he’ll age 50 years in a week as his entire world collapses in ruins around him.

Daily movements in the stock market mean nothing — especially those on the order of this drop. I would agree it might signal a problem if there were a 22% drop in a single day as in 1987, (though that one was basically caused by “portfolio insurance”, a computerized algorithm designed to “limit” losses.) It’s only the percentage drop that matters not the dollar drop. It’s meaningless right now — and by tomorrow Trump will have gone on to some new outrage and this rant will be forgotten.

They don’t really want to actually deter illegal immigration. Not in the sense of actually preventing it. The thing they want to deter is the presumption of humanity toward brown people in general. They want to make it clear we’re animals to be detained, restrained, and exterminated, not human beings to be treated with actual rights.

The Joker in the comics has taken many forms over the years, from a serial killer in the golden age, to a trickster in the silver age to something in between now. Nicholson was clearly the trickster Joker and Heath was more the homicidal maniac Joker. The problem with this new Joker is that it is a new character, in none of the origin stories was the Joker ever actually a clown.

That’s actually taken from the comics. One of the big things about the Joker is, unlike almost every other comic book character, he’s never had a solidly defined origin. Instead he merely comes up with more and more elaborate and ever changing stories about his creation. This is also referenced in The Dark Knight with the constantly changing story of how he got his scars.

I don’t think Biden gets it. Not sure any Democrat does, but they better learn. You are not just running a country, you are fighting against 20 years of right wing propaganda. This is not going to change overnight.

re: #219 Eclectic Cyborg

That’s actually taken from the comics. One of the big things about the Joker is, unlike almost every other comic book character, he’s never had a solidly defined origin. Instead he merely comes up with more and more elaborate and ever changing stories about his creation. This is also referenced in The Dark Knight with the constantly changing story of how he got his scars.

Even Killing Joke has him admit that he doesn’t really remember his actual origin (leaving the assumption that the story’s version of it might be fake too), and that he prefers it that way. As he put it “If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be Multiple Choice!”

It’s also yet another thing about the Joker that for all his chaos fetishism, anarchic trappings, and claims that he just ‘does things’, he’s a consummate schemer and plotter himself, that everything he does has a purpose, even if the purpose is to further the chaos he so enjoys. He wants everyone in on the joke, even if they don’t realize it.

re: #192 Hecuba’s daughter

Daily movements in the stock market mean nothing — especially those on the order of this drop. I would agree it might signal a problem if there were a 22% drop in a single day as in 1987, (though that one was basically caused by “portfolio insurance”, a computerized algorithm designed to “limit” losses.) It’s only the percentage drop that matters not the dollar drop. It’s meaningless right now — and by tomorrow Trump will have gone on to some new outrage and this rant will be forgotten.

The trading curbs/circuit breakers would prevent that kind of action.
NYSE sets three circuit breaker levels at levels of 7% (Level 1), 13% (Level 2) and 20% (Level 3). 20% drop would shut the market for the day. Level 1 and 2 bring trading halts

More important to look at percentage gains/drops than straight point losses.

The presidential hopeful still has work to do, and demanding she do what’s left is beyond reasonable.

Elizabeth Warren, apologizing to Native leaders on Monday, said, “I know I’ve made mistakes. I am sorry for harm I have caused.” For many people, that apology put the issue to rest.

But many Native advocates, myself included, were not satisfied. Warren still has work to do, and demanding she do what’s left is beyond reasonable. In all of her apologizing, Warren has never let go of her family story. After spending her entire adult life repeating a lie, I simply want Warren to tell the truth

At a meeting in San Francisco today, the committee determined that the state party had not followed a mandate issued in February to adopt new bylaws and hold a new election for party leadership.

The other day, I said that if Xi really wanted to bury the hatchet on all this, he should invite Trump to their big October 1st Revolution Day shinding in Beijing. Trump and Xi can stand side-by-side on the podium, reviewing the PLA, the tanks, the missiles, etc.

Then Xi can make some laughably small concession, and Trump will not only give Xi pretty much anything he wants, he’ll also throw Taiwan under the bus - and maybe throw in the US West Coast and Hawai’i for good measure.

This isn’t Ginsburg’s first brush with cancer. In September 1999, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. It was found incidentally when she had gone to the doctor for an abdominal infection. She underwent a sigmoid colectomy followed by “precautionary” chemotherapy and radiation treatments which began in October and finished in June 2000. According to Ginsburg, “Following the treatments, it is anticipated that I will require only routine examinations to assure my continuing good health.”

It was during one of those routine examinations, 10 years later, when her screening CT scan found a single lesion, measuring about 1 centimeter across, in the center of Ginsburg’s pancreas. She underwent surgery to remove the body and tail of the pancreas along with her spleen.

That was lung cancer, this is pancreatic. It is apparently now undetecable. But pancreatic cancer is never a good thing.

I know someone whose pancreatic cancer actually went into full remission, because he was one of the very rare and lucky ones who caught it early enough. Everyone at work started noticing his skin had a weird yellowish tinge to it, and prodded him to see a doctor, who ran all the right tests and caught it in the very early stages.

That had to have been a good 8 years ago by now, if not longer. He doesn’t work there anymore, but last I heard he was in good health with no signs of any relapse.

But again - that’s rare.

My wife hangs it one way, and I do the other way. We don’t argue over it or try to change it, it’s just a sign of who put it on.

Was that before or after you found out that he claims to have had personal contact with extra-terrestrials?

I realise it’s still quite a long time before the election, and that Kentucky is an ‘obviously’ Red state, but I hope someone runs some polling for the Senate election for Kentucky soon rather than later.

For the current governor race, the polling is in favour of Democrat Beshear with 48% to Republican Bevin’s 39% with some undecided and a few percent for the Libertarian.

McConnell has been deeply unpopular for a long time, and Amy McGrath seems a very strong opponent. It’s hard to imagine any scenario where the Senate race isn’t very very close, if not already in Amy’s favour.

Most Kentuckians do not like Bevin. Andy Beshear is extremely likeable and has been an excellent AG.
Almost no one here likes Mitch, and never have. He has never won an election by an overwhelming margin.

Hey. Saw you were in Austria. Nice. I’m still a pedal freak and even though I’m not quite sure what I’m doing I keep tabs on the Quest For Tone.
So there is a very interesting couple of pedals. Made in Latvia. I suspect you may be able to go to a music store and try one? What do I know? But this is very interesting and the one overdrive-distortion is something else.
GO FIND THEM AND TAKE A TEST DRIVE AND REPORT BACK TO ME. There will be no pay…
With the cleanest amp and then the most dirty one. At stage volumes if they allow.
Company name is The Plus Pedal.
No that’s not the name. That’s the pedal I want you to ride for about an hour with single coils and tell me what’s up.

Now check out the links, do not want to send too much.
Have fun. Insist on cold beer

Tuxedo Cat is capable of unrolling it either way. Which is why the toilet paper in the bathrooms is no longer put on the dispensers.
