John Oliver Dives Into Legal Immigration [VIDEO]

John Oliver explains how our legal immigration system works, and how it often doesn’t.
Get in line.
The line is nearly 30 years old. That is, if you got on the line now, they’re taking cases that were first ingested into the system more than 30 years ago. This is no way to run an immigration process. Clean up the backlog and that means devote resources to get those visas processed, green cards issued, and naturalize those in the system.
It doesn’t mean shut it all down to nonwhites, which is exactly what Trump and the GOP wants. They have framed this as merely waiting in line, but when you create a line that is 30 years long, and there’s no sign anyone will ever get to immigrate from nonwhite countries in any reflection of the numbers that would want to come here, “getting in line” is a dodge for the reality that the GOP wants to preserve white power in the country for as long as possible.
re: #1 lawhawk
Shutting it down to non-whites is the “moderate” position among the white wing. Deep down, most of them really want zero immigration.

Just not letting anyone else in would result in negative migration - there are (and sit down, this might come as a shock to some) people born in the US who decide to go live elsewhere in the world… and not just as a political stunt because their preferred presidential candidate lost.
But yes, the furthest reaches of the white wing would want to kick out naturalized or even natural born citizens who don’t pass the paper bag test.

Buildings that are co-ops, the building as a whole pays property tax (an expense which figures into each owner-tenant’s monthly maintenance fees). But sometimes there’s property tax abatements for one reason or another, and the refund is sent to the Corporation. Which is then supposed to pro-rate the shares and distribute them to tenants.
The abatements on my apartment that I can remember off-hand were from when we did environmental things the city wanted to encourage, half the cost of these green improvements was knocked off our property tax on the theory that we were helping save the city from having to construct more steam and water and electric infrastructure.

It is difficult to think of a worse character in literature than the OT God. Ironically, the only real contender may be the NT God, with this novel business of eternal torment in Hell for the thought crime of non-belief.

The Greek Gods were shitbirds to the Greeks and mostly irrelevant to outsiders. Ditto for the Aztec gods etc.
This business of universal salvation (and its dark side, universal damnation) didn’t really exist until Christianity.
The Muslim-American mayor of Prospect Park, New Jersey, was harassed and wrongfully detained by Customs and Border Protection after flying into John F. Kennedy International Airport last month, saying that agents asked him if he knew any terrorists during the nearly three hours he was held.Mayor Mohamed Khairullah and his family had actually been vacationing in Turkey and were returning home to Prospect Park when the CBP agent’s questions went from standard—“like about where he traveled from and who he visited,” CNN said—to downright offensive and discriminatory, asking Khairullah “did you meet with any terrorists?”
…
CBP’s treatment of Khairullah was “a clear case of profiling,” said Ahmed Mohamed, litigation director for the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “He gets treated as if he was a terrorist in this situation. That’s conduct that should be unacceptable to every single American in this country.”

The House of Saud will be delighted to get us involved in their conflict and have our military die for them — we are just their hired guns. But as I keep saying — maybe naively — this is not the Trump way; he won’t be starting a new conflict that would produce significant American casualties. Yes — he will misjudge the situation, like he misjudges everything except the gullibility and racism of much of the American public — but actual conflict, now that Bolton is gone, seems increasingly unlikely.

He won’t get us involved in another war, because that would be long and messy and hurt his reelection chances. You are so right. Our Trumpster brother keeps on praising his negotiating skills which he honed as a brilliant real estate developer. Our brother is in sales and thinks of Trump as a perfect model of how to get your opponent to agree to your conditions to close a deal. But it’s not just Trumpsters who have this attitude. A small business owner friend who loved Bernie in 2016 (and voted for Hillary in the general) has repeatedly described Trump as typical of many of the business owners he knows — boastful, arrogant, and confident in their skills, regardless of the reality of the situation.
The security guards at the Abqaiq refinery reportedly tried to shoot down the drones using small arms fire, which tells me:
1. They were not flying that fast, there was enough time for guys with rifles to try to engage.
2. The Saudis never thought to install point defense weapons systems around a piece of key infrastructure prone to secondary explosions.

If this is indeed the “Saudis’ 9/11”, then we know for certain who the bad guys are…
re: #180 Blind Frog Belly White
I think this really is one of the keys to understanding Trump. We worry about him starting a war because he’s a saber-rattling clown, but really, he’s afraid of war because it’s real. Parades, bragging about how much you’re spending on the military, having your picture taken with soldiers - none of that is REAL. It’s all show. Soldiers dying, cities bombed, children killed and displayed on network TV - that shit is REAL. And if the enemy doesn’t just fold, and it drags on and on….
I mean, Iran is a big country, with 81 Million people, more than 3 times as many as Iraq. And we didn’t just kick the shit out of them ten years prior, like we had with Iraq. And though the government might not be all that popular with the average Iranian citizen, you can just dambetcha it will become super popular the moment we start lobbing bombs at them. Plus, they fought Saddam at his strongest to a standstill.
Trump’s fear of the effect a long, drawn out war would have on his popularity will, I hope and expect, keep him from launching a war, though like Venezuela, he’s likely to back down close to the last minute.
re: #69 jaunte
Presumably Pompeo is heading for the UN to lie to everyone there because - Iran needs to be obliterated by US bombs. Some Democrats are worried that if they impeach Trump & Kavanaugh, they’ll alienate centrist voters who don’t give a shit about women being sexually assaulted and raped.

OK, even leaving aside for a moment that this is a Republican Senator who’s tweeting (and therefore “making sense” rarely, if ever, enters the picture) - how TF would the Green New Deal “increase our reliance on foreign sources”? Does Sen. Gardner imagine that we would be paying a royalty for sunlight? Buying wind from China?? A “federal ban on fracking” - ecologically beneficial as it might be - might (probably would): assuming of course, that (fossil-fuel) energy demand might not fall under a GND: but that’s another issue.

Genetic genealogy has been such a game changer in the hunt for serial killers and rapists. Think we are in a golden age for solving these cases. We really need to make funds available to go back and review all of the cold cases with unknown DNA available.

I would like to see satisfactory DNA check as one of the requirements for gun ownership thus necessitating a vast increase in the ability to do those tests. Maybe then we could handle all those untested rape-kits.
An explosion rocked a Russian research facility known for housing the smallpox virus
An explosion Monday caused a fire at the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology, a biological research facility in Siberia known for being one of the two centers in the world housing samples of live smallpox virus. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta is the only other place known to maintain live samples of the deadly pathogen.

One thing that separates Trump from, say Biden and my mom, is that he has to restrain himself from being full blown racist. My mom’s racism is more like “that was racist. I didn’t know that, that’s how I was raised. I’ll try not to do it again.”
