Feral hogs in Texas attacked and killed a woman outside a home
A Texas woman was found dead after pre-dawn attack by a group of feral hogs outside a home, the Chambers County sheriff said.
Christine Rollins, a 59-year old caregiver to an elderly couple in Anahuac, failed to show up at her normal time on Sunday, the sheriff’s office said. The 84-year-old homeowner found her lying in the front yard between her car and the house.
Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said in a news conference Monday that “multiple hogs” assaulted Rollins when she arrived at work, likely between 6 and 6:30 a.m., when it was still dark outside.
“In my 35 years, I will tell you it’s one of the worst things I’ve ever seen,” Hawthorne told reporters.

Youtube seems to be really upping the commercials, at least on videos the channel owner have designated that they want monetized.
Some of the vids I’m watching the past couple of days, on youtube channels I’ve viewed before, are giving me a couple of advertisements every 5 minutes or so. The adverts are the short ones (5 or 10 seconds), but damn, they interrupt the program so much it is now onerous.
And of course the channels that choose to not monetize will be shuffled off the search results by the Youtube search engine.

This is getting to be more and more like a science fiction “nature’s revenge” monster movie every day. Game wardens and state troopers hunt them with machine guns and from helicopters, the state has authorized the use of poison and lethal traps, and they are considering explosives. There are a million licensed hunters in Texas who can go after them with no limit and no season. Yet the hogs still multiply and expand their range every day. They are the toughest and smartest game animals in the world, and increasingly dangerous. I’ve noticed that they seem to be losing their fear of humans and are harder and harder to simply frighten away.

That looks like Shin Godzilla’s first form (not shown in the 2016 movie).
On a completely different subject, the large religious university in eastern Idaho that told students Medicaid did not count for insurance, but boy howdy, their really bad insurance offered by the university itself (which doesn’t meet ACA standards) does, reverses course and “apologizes for community turmoil.” It took the New York Times writing a piece headlined “University to Students on Medicaid: Buy Private Coverage, or Drop Out” to get BYU Idaho’s attention.
REXBURG — Brigham Young University-Idaho has reversed its decision to reject Medicaid as a waiver to its Student Health Plan.
The university issued a statement and an apology for the turmoil the decision caused in a campus-wide email Monday night. University spokesman Brett Crandall confirmed the email, but declined to comment further.
“We have decided that Medicaid, as it has in previous years, will meet the health coverage requirement at BYU-Idaho,” the email says.
The email goes on to say that because of its limited capacity and scope of services, the Student Health Center will continue not serving as a Medicaid service provider.
“The well-being of our students and their families is very important to us,” the notice said. “We are grateful for the feedback we have received from our campus community and for the input of the local medical community. We apologize for the turmoil caused by our earlier decision.”
This was a particular slam because Idaho is expanding Medicaid and many poor young families which go to BYU Idaho will likely qualify for the expansion. It’s still unclear why BYU Idaho was being such shitheels about it, unless they really expected people to sign up for their truly shitty health insurance.

On a related note, if you have the possibility to take this years flu jab, please do. I has sampled this years flu, and found out the following equation:
psoriaticArthritis + flu = OW
This one goes for your muscles and joints pretty well, and is a sneaky bastard. First you get the nose drip and and a day later the throat ache, then you feel better, only to find out it followed you to the dark alley and knocked you over after yet another day. And I am still recovering from that virus (a little weak and tired, but mostly fine).

I know, right? Like, the floor in my apartment has ever so slight give, so if the Ibuprofen happened to have worn off entirely and mom walked across the floor… Every damn step of hers felt something akin to someone pressing on a bruise, only in every muscle and joint.
And I experienced the joys of pneumonia as a complication of a flu a little over three years ago. And then a left-sided pleural empyema (fluid in the bag which contains the lung, I had 500 ml-ish) as a complication of the pneumonia, which sent me to the hospital for 12 days. Endured 2 chest drains and 5 or 6 PVC’s and a grand total of 51 days of penicillin either IV or orally (Mental note: IV Penicillin G, a.k.a. Everything is either the greatest ever or the worst. Examples of the former include the economy, military, etc under him and the latter how he’s been treated. This guy isn’t insightful at all. In the end, I think the whistleblower might have refrained if Trump had not been so blatantly heavy-handed about the quid pro quo with Ukraine.
He could have easily built some layers of deniability into it, simply asking Ukraine to step up its investigations of corruption and perhaps mentioning that the Bidens might be worth looking into, etc, but he just just lean on Zelinsky like a mafia heavy.
Professional diplomats could not just sit idly by and watch him make such a mockery of diplomacy and so egregiously abuse his influence.

I dunno. I think the idea he cared about nepotism and corruption from the start was laughable. He again though provides the rope though. Trump and Putin are double teaming Europe to act as independent countries instead of a union. This is totally coordinated. EU should start negotiating individual trade agreements with US states. Give US same back.
Someone from Europe needs to say “We have studied US history. It was the attempt by the British to negotiate with each US state individually that showed how weak the Articles of Confederation were, and that they needed to stand together in order to truly withstand outside interference.”

The challenge the next Democrat faces is prioritizing cleaning up Trump’s messes. He/she won’t be able to clean all them up and I guess what upsets me is time and time again a Democratic President has a difficult time pursuing an agenda since it’s cleaning up old messes. Carter had to restore faith in the Oval Office after Watergate, Clinton had to clean up the stupidity that was Reaganomics, & Obama had to fix the country’s image after Bush abroad. Republicans often make messes and Democrats get stuck cleaning them up and then the electorate is either too impatient or gets amnesia about the causes of these messes.

You can go back to the world wars. Putin knows of the tribalism that caused WWI/II. Trump if he knows Sarajevo if at all is probably because he got a property there but does he know anything of the ugly nationalism that fueled two bloody wars and indirectly the Cold War and war on terrorism? Nope.

I had my annual flu shot yesterday! My arm was itchy and now it’s kinda tender around the injection but flu sucks harder so this vaccine will kick its ass.

But some some weird reason when I brought her in last night she was growling a bit and acting quite aggressively, at least towards me. Once, when I picked her up, she took a swipe at me which is something she RARELY does. She still didn’t bother the dogs or tear up anything in the house. GOP leaders in the Kentucky legislature are pushing a bill that would effectively remove Democratic Gov.-elect Andy Beshear’s control over the state’s Department of Transportation, the latest move in an accelerating trend of Republicans stripping power from Democratic governors before they can take office. The legislation would limit the governor to nominating a transportation secretary from a list chosen by a new a board whose nine members would be selected by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and local government associations, with those members subject to a veto by the Republican-run legislature. Lawmakers would also have veto power over Beshear’s nominee, making this the only cabinet position in the state requiring Senate confirmation.

As more impeachment polls come in, they’re undermining the Republican talking point that the numbers are moving against Democrats: 49% support impeaching and removing President Trump while 44% do not.
and
A new CNN poll finds 53% of Americans think that President Trump had used his office improperly, up from 49% in October, and 56% said Trump’s attempts to persuade Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter was more for personal benefit than to root out corruption.

i’ve been thinking about this for a little while and i think it’s time to start being more accurate regarding the senate ‘acquitting’, etc.
i’m using your comment as a springboard, but not pointing at you.
A senate ‘verdict’ is not ‘guilty / not guilty’ or worse any sense of ‘innocent / exoneration’.
the senate will vote to:
- remove from office or not
- and/ or disqualify from holding another future office
there is nothing more and nothing less.
there is no ‘acquittal’.
if the house votes by majority, the president is impeached. period. full stop.
for all time.
it doesnt go away. ever.
he will always be a member of a small and ignominious bunch.
further, by my math, if the house votes before 1/30/20, trump gets the record for fastest presidential impeachment from inauguration (ousting johnson)

They were using the Germans for war material to prosecute a war against the people who invaded them and stole their territory. Not sure that’s going to work on a “national” level - no matter what level of “blue wave” sweeps DC after the 2020 election, the last session of the 116th Congress that will be meeting will still have a Democratic-controlled House (with Nancy Pelosi still Speaker), and barring (God forbid) a “red wave” election, the same in the first session of the 117th (from 1/3/21). So the GOP’s capacity for fucking things up past-election is likely to be limited.
Though I’m sure Trump will do his best to leave as much of a mess behind as he can (mass pardons are likely to be the least of it).
Tim Miller: “According to a report by MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle, Bolton said that he believes there is a ‘personal or business relationship dictating Trump’s position on Turkey.’”“Wait what? The president’s former national security advisor suggested that the commander-in-chief made life or death national security decisions because of an active conflict of interest related to his business?”
“Even by the standards of Trumpian corruption, this is holy-motherforking-shirtballs level stuff.”*
“Bolton’s accusation, if accurate, would amount to the biggest scandal in the American presidency in half a century: The most senior security staffer, a man with unparalleled access to the president, believes that Trump acted in a way that is indistinguishable from double-dealing despots the world over.”

The D.C. Wolves and Fake News Media are reading far too much into people being forced by Courts to testify before Congress. I am fighting for future Presidents and the Office of the President. Other than that, I would actually like people to testify. Don McGahn’s respected….

Now for a word from one of my favorite series creators:
3) In the gap between election and inauguration, Russia invades Ukraine. Trump doesn’t object, calling Ukraine an enemy of the American people
4) During the invasion Russia “finds” documents “proving” Ukraine hacked the 2016 *and* the 2020 elections to favor the Democrat— J. Michael Straczynski (@straczynski) November 26, 2019
7) Regardless of whether or not Trump is successful at getting the 2020 results set aside, he has driven a stake through the heart of the American democratic and electoral system. If he stays, the nation is divided; if the Democrat goes in, s/he is considered by many illegitimate

Many consider Trump an illegitimate President, but also are not rioting in the streets or creating an armed insurrection.
Russia is an economic world power with more than TEN TIMES the population of Ukraine. They also have a President who happens to be a former intelligence officer.
Now, who do YOU think would more easily be able to pull off a wide scope hack of the 2016 election?

Because a healthy sow can have a huge farrow, the population will grow rapidly. And our modern treatment of the landscape gives the swine plenty of food. And we no longer have natural predators, which in the case of swine (back in Eurasia) would be large felids or pack of wolves.
Even a pack of wolves would have a problem with full-grown feral hogs. They are little tanks. Innards protected, low to the ground, nimble and intelligent.
There is a reason our Medieval forefathers hunted them from atop armored horses. Using 12-foot spears.
On the other hand, they ARE tasty.

Well actually, the issue (minor as it is) is in not so much as to what her place /description in our relationship is. She has been and will always be my Wife. After 34 years of marriage, that is not going to change (her words). It’s how do we now describe MY place in the relationship. Obviously, I can no longer be her “husband” and calling me her “wife” will get your head ripped off. We have more or less settled on partner for the time being.
All that being said, labels suck.

No, they are not stupid nor gullible. They are evil.
They are evil specifically because they believe in and fight for white supremacism.
Dershowitz is fucking insane.
Alan Dershowitz appears to have jumped on the “chosen one” bandwagon.
During a Monday night interview on Fox News host Laura Ingraham’s show, Dershowitz weighed in on a federal judge’s ruling that President Trump cannot block former White House Counsel Don McGahn from complying with a congressional subpoena.
After sarcastically saying that “the big winner is Uber, because McGahn will have to get into his car, he’s gonna have to go over to the Capitol, raise his hand, take an oath, and then he can invoke privilege,” Dershowitz argued that the ruling “has no substantive impact.”
Dershowitz then railed against U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson of Washington whose decision is a boost for Democrats as they move forward with their impeachment inquiry into Trump.
“The judge went out of her way to say I’m not ruling on the issues of privilege, all I’m saying is he has to show up,” Dershowitz said, before arguing that “she went nuts talking about how the President’s not a king.”
“Of course the President’s not the king. The President’s far more powerful than the king,” Dershowitz said, echoing Trump’s August remark when he said that he was the “chosen one” meant to fix the U.S. economy and trade relations. “The President has the power that kings have never had.”

The worst of the Michigan redistricting attempts got beaten back in court. J. Michael was prescient with some of his B5 storylines and commentary about human nature.
The original Babylon 5 seasons are basically a how-to guide recognize fascism. Along with some really nice dialogue and monologue:
“Every day, here and at home, we are warned about the enemy. But who is the enemy? Is it the alien? Well, we are all alien to one another. Is it the one who believes differently than we do? No, oh no, my friends. The enemy is fear. The enemy is ignorance. The enemy is the one who tells you that you must hate that which is different. Because, in the end, that hate will turn on you. And that same hate will destroy you.”

Death rates from suicide, drug overdoses, liver disease and dozens of other causes have been rising over the past decade for young and middle-aged adults, driving down overall life expectancy in the United States for three consecutive years, according to a strikingly bleak study published Tuesday that looked at the past six decades of mortality data.
The report, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, was immediately hailed by outside researchers for its comprehensive treatment of a still-enigmatic trend: the reversal of historical patterns in longevity.
The United States, despite massive expenditures on health care, has seen increasing mortality and falling life expectancy for people ages 25 to 64, who should be in the prime of their lives, while other wealthy nations have generally experienced continued progress in extending longevity. Although earlier research emphasized rising mortality among non-Hispanic whites, the broad trend detailed in this study cuts across gender, racial and ethnic lines. By age group, the highest relative jump in death rates from 2010 to 2017 — 29 percent — has been among people ages 25 to 34.

I know he has fallen out of favor, but this is one of my favorite Woody Allen gags:
Banksters, peasants, and Kim Jong Un’s grandpa: A parable for our times.
When Kim Il Sung’s communist army invaded the South in 1950, they initially met with great success. The ill-equipped and corruption-ridden southern army disintegrated, while MacArthur’s hastily assembled UN army was rushed from Japan. Unfortunately, Mac’s forces were also unprepared, thanks to the abominable staff work of his sycophantic subordinates. They were soon pushed into a small pocket around the port of Pusan (now rendered as Busan) and a desperate battle ensued.
In the meantime, the communists set about creating a peoples’ state in the newly won territory. First order of business when they entered a village was to eliminate supporters of the former regime. Kim was brutal but he was not an idiot, so this was not universally applied. Those regime holdovers who seemed likely to be useful could escape the firing squads, with the result that a few policemen, teachers, local administrators and even a handful of priests were spared.
There was one group that was eradicated without exception, though. All bankers and money-lenders were shot out of hand, their assets confiscated and their ledgers consigned to a bonfire in the village square. This initially made the communists very popular with the peasants, for South Korea had no usury laws and the peasants had been held in ruinous debt for their entire lives. This popularity faded quickly when the communists started confiscating food and drafting men to be fed into the napalm- fueled inferno at the front. The lesson was not lost, though, when the communist army was routed after the Inchon landing and fled back north. It took a while, for a few bankers had managed to survive, but their influence had been drastically reduced. The South eventually instituted fair banking and lending practices and the peasants prospered.
It’s hard to prove a connection and there are many other factors involved, but these events took place less than an average lifetime ago, within my lifetime in fact. In that time, South Korea has gone from backward third-world hellhole to one of the most advanced and prosperous countries in the world.

Yeah, I remember that guy and the hog thing from him. Of course, you don’t absolutely have to have a detachable mag rifle for hog hunting. Anything .30-30 and above will do. However, large packs of feral hogs are dangerous and destructive, and clearance efforts probably require a degree of firepower that you do not see with other animals. State game officers are using full auto machine guns from what I understand, and explosives are being considered as well.

I know, we’ve been out there on Thanksgiving Eve while they blow them up. They look even bigger when you’re standing next to them.
And no balloons is going to seriously cut down the running time of the parade, which means the talking heads are going to end up commenting on each others’ overcoats and earmuffs and whatever else it’ll take to fill up the time until the dog show comes on.
Best thing about deep-frying a turkey? The Red Cross will bring you donuts and blankets after the fire.

I’ve never been to the balloon filling activities before the parade, but I’ve been to the parade as a kid - a very neat experience. I haven’t been there as an adult, and I can’t stand the parade coverage on tv. It’s nearly always awful.
No balloons? Then spend more time on the marching bands that work so hard to get there.
Expect the talking heads to make the parade coverage more insufferable if the balloons don’t fly.

I like that. Conventional wisdom was that it first took mass protests to get Syngman Rhee out of power in 1959, and then it took the authoritarian regime of Park Chung Hee to make everyone fall into line with promises that soon enough everyone’s boat would rise. When that didn’t happen evenly, it took the KCIA to remove Park through assassination. They went through a lot to get to democracy in the early 1990s; they don’t like corruption (though of course it still happens).

I wonder if the death rate is attached to the current fentanyl/heroin epidemic.
Some of that is the result of the opioid epidemic (the gateway being drugs prescribed by licensed physicians who believed the pharmaceuticals when they said drugs like oxycontin were not addictive, even though there wasn’t any research to that point).
Some of it is the result of reversing expansion of health coverage to millions of Americans - and health coverage in states that refused to expand coverage under the ACA lag in all manner of health outcome metrics, including life expectancy.
Overall gun violence has dropped, but is still far higher in the US than elsewhere in the developed world.

Russia is an economic world power with more than TEN TIMES the population of Ukraine. They also have a President who happens to be a former intelligence officer.
Now, who do YOU think would more easily be able to pull off a wide scope hack of the 2016 election?
//
Russia is a world power because of its military and vast supply of nuclear weapons; but it’s not an economic power. Indeed, its economy is a disaster — other than oil and military weapons, it has nothing of interest to provide to the world. Its life expectancy is in the bottom quartile among all nations. The only way it can succeed is by bringing down the rest of the world — and it’s doing a good job on that with the United States
Regarding the airspace violation:
- White House lockdown was lifted after 20 minutes.
- FAA reports it was a small aircraft that committed the violation, the plane was escorted out of restricted airspace by fighter jets
So, most likely a pilot who screwed up his navigating somehow.

Russia ranks 11 or 12 by GDP. It’s GDP is roughly equivalent to the size of New York’s GDP. The US GDP is $21 trillion. Russia? $1.6. NY has $1.7 trillion in GDP.
New York’s GDP is surpassed only by CA and TX, at $3 and $1.8 trillion, respectively.
But for nukes and active military spending, plus ongoing disinformation campaigns, Russia would be an afterthought in the global economy.

True, but as a military semi-superpower (still smarting from the dissolution of its former “empire”) Russia’s size is pretty much the problem. Too big to be a second-tier Power, but not big enough for the “major leagues”. And then there are those nukes…..

The only reason it ranks as high as 11 or 12 is due to petrodollars. Other than that, it has no real economy. It is a basket case — but one that can blow up the world and destroy everything around it. It is a nation with so much potential but it’s been plagued by incompetent leadership through much of its existence. I’ve always thought that if Trotsky had won the power struggle, the situation might have been different, but who knows?

It’s 11th in nominal GDP and 6th in PPP GDP. But per capita it is 60th and 49th respectively. And that’s with the 9th largest population in the world (about half the US population).

Today would probably be a good day to mute any berniebros you might follow on the twitters:
Former President Barack Obama, who has so far taken a neutral position publicly on the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, privately indicated he would speak up to stop Bernie Sanders from becoming the party’s nominee should the Vermont senator make significant gains, Politico reported Tuesday.
Politico’s Ryan Lizza, who spoke to several of Obama’s advisers, wrote that the former president sees his role in the Democratic primary process as “providing guardrails” to make sure it doesn’t get “too ugly” and “to unite the party when the nominee is clear.”
Obama’s not wrong. But it’s going to be a bitchfest on line.

Parque Chamizal, Ciudad Juárez
Three interactive stations on each side of the border will control powerful searchlight beams using a small dial wheel. When lights from any two stations are directed at each other, microphones and speakers automatically switch-on to allow participants to talk with one another, creating cross-border conversations.
The project is curated by Kerry Doyle and León de la Rosa, with programming direction by Edgar Picazo. While a diverse schedule of invited guests will open the installation each evening, everybody is welcome to participate for free.

re: #369 DangerMan (misuser of the sarc tag)
A vaccine costs a fraction of an illness like malaria or cancer, which is generally not spread person to person.
If you can vaccinate a population against cancer or malaria, you’d see a major improvement in other health outcomes, life expectancy, and health funds can be directed at other ailments. You’d also see economic improvements as less time is spent hospitalized/caring for those who are sick, and the emotional toll of getting sick or watching a loved one sickened or dying from these diseases.
HPV vaccine prevents not only HPV but a variety of cancers. In the US, Gardasil prevents infection from HPV 16 and 18, which account for 70% of cervical cancers as well as five additional cancer-causing types (31, 33, 45, 52, and 58) that together account for 10 to 20% of cervical cancers. So, you can prevent 80-90% of cervical cancers, prevent several other kinds of cancer, and these people think it’s not worth it?
Fuck that. Anyone who knows anyone who has had cancer knows that they’d all give whatever they could to avoid getting cancer. A vaccine? I’d take it to avoid the chance I would get a disease as horrible as that.
