A Music Video Like No Other: Anna Meredith, “Paramour”

YouTube

I literally couldn’t tear my eyes away from this video until it finished. Amazing piece of work on every level. And there are a lot of levels.

Anna Meredith announces her eagerly anticipated second studio album, FIBS, due for release on 25 October via Moshi Moshi: https://www.plctrmm.to/FIBS

The album is heralded by the release of ‘Paramour’, its first single and spectacular accompanying single-take video, featuring 1200 pieces of LEGO track, and a song that forbids you from turning away - its sweeps, jerks and wrong turns pinning your ears to the speakers whilst heading for warp speed at a blistering 176 BPM before rounding the journey out with an (utterly unexpected) tuba-led half-time rock-out.

See her live around the UK in February 2020 - tickets on-sale on now at http://www.annameredith.com:
3rd - LEEDS, Belgrave Music Hall
4th - MANCHESTER, Gorilla
5th - LONDON, EartH
6th - BRISTOL, Trinity
8th - GLASGOW, Art School
9th - COVENTRY, Arts Centre
10th - BRIGHTON, Old Market

Directed by Ewan Jones Morris
Lego Master Builder, Gary Davis
Produced by Rachel McWhinney
Additional props by Chloe Lamford
Graded by Conner Coolbear at Electric Theatre Collective

Think about Rage Furby’s (ex-ish) wife.

But, you could show that photo to people who want to back Miller.

On a different topic, I am increasingly surprised at the amount of free video online, of previously broadcast/cable shows.

For example, Tubi. Lots of stuff there. And there are other providers too. All apparently legal.

As if Youtube already doesn’t have more than I could watch.

No wonder networks are so desperate to hook people into their own over-the-top services.

And speaking of NASCAR, its popularity has really declined substantially.

Trump is mining the old folk and those who want a nostalgia world, that includes big gas guzzling cars.

When I was younger, I liked to watch Nascar as a family bonding experience. It was part of the shared experience of being white and Southern (or in my case, white and descended from Southerners). Now, it’s like Nascar is like the secular version of evangelical churches—they’ve hitched their wagon to Donald Trump and it’s disgusting. Plus I fucking DO NOT GET their playoff system. If you make it too complicated that a university educated person can’t understand it without a spreadsheet and calculator, it’s no fun.

That said, the number of cars that got wrecked yesterday in the Xfinity race was *amazing*. And the cars pretty much *fell apart*. My brother said the cars’ exteriors are now being made of fiberglass. Apparently if you don’t align the hoods JUST RIGHT, they can just peel away and lead to wrecks…

I’m a motorsports fan and NASCAR has bored me for a while. I don’t have cable and I can’t watch most of the races (Or it rains at the track and I don’t get to watch anyway.)

I’m waiting for IndyCar and F1 seasons, but I’ll probably not get to watch many races this year.

My father had a friend who owned some cars on a local circuit in central Illinois. He and my brother used to go and enjoy it very much. My mother and I just figured it was cars going around in circles, and somebody might get hurt, and it cost money. IOW, stupid.

I used to know a nazi-skinhead who would only date Jewish girls. And when I say girls, i mean he was like 30 years old dating 14 year-olds going through their “rebellious” stage.

For some people, dating people you loath is a perverse turn on. I have absolutely no problem believing that dynamic is what’s going on with Miller. Or Chuck C. Johnson, for that matter.

BENGHAZI !!!

The Trump administration has zeroed out of the State Department budget a request from a nonprofit entity set up in honor of J. Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador killed in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012 terrorist attacks.

The agency’s fiscal 2021 budget proposal cuts $420 million from its educational and cultural programs, including $5 million for the Stevens Initiative, an organization created to memorialize the late ambassador’s dedication to cultivating international exchanges.

This appears to be at least the third time that dedicated funding for the program has been removed by Trump’s budget officials. For the past two years, Congress has restored it.

The first part of this interview with Chuck Todd really struck me because of how it shows how kind and decent a man Joe Biden is, especially when he talks about Hunter, and especially about the rupture of his friendship with Lindsey Graham. He isn’t my first, second, or even third choice for the Dem nomination (1, he’s too moderate for my tastes and 2) his statement that Trump is an aberration, and that there are good Republicans out there who will work with him and bring the country together is nuts), but he is a good and honorable man, and he would be a welcome change in the White House after the monstrous indecency of Trump.

Pressure grows on Downing Street to sack controversial adviser Andrew Sabisky

The Prime Minister has been urged to remove a new adviser who went on record to support the ‘forced sterilisation of people he considers not worthy.’

[…]

Writing on the website of the PM’s chief aide in 2014 he said: “One way to get around the problems of unplanned pregnancies creating a permanent underclass would be to legally enforce universal uptake of long-term contraception at the onset of puberty.

“Vaccination laws give it a precedent, I would argue.”

Mr Sabisky also tweeted “women’s sport is more comparable to the Paralympics than it is to men’s”.

There is a problem in Hulu doesn’t have episodes 1-200 from the first season, and is missing everything after episode 290.

For Valentines Day, she ordered the complete 131-DVD set from Dan Curtis Productions (the producer of the show), but it hasn’t arrived here yet.

The DVDs come in a coffin-shaped display box, along with DVDs interviewing the actors and a blooper reel, along with a documentary about the show.

I think she ordered it more for herself than me. /s

I’m concerned about the anti-intellectual strain of extreme conservatism. In authoritarian regimes, they tend to round up the intelligentsia (usually defined as college-educated, but in some cases bizarre criteria such as wearing glasses in Cambodia).

In the USA now, they could do it by rounding up people who belong to high-IQ societies, so they can get those who didn’t go to college. Seize those lists and you have the address of every such person in the USA.

Steve Silberman’s book Neurotribes goes into the history of eugenics related to autism. People considered autism to be a mental illness and autistic people were treated accordingly with commitment to asylums, medical experiments, forced sterilization and basic torture. It’s a great book but the history part is sad and disgusting.

Hmmm. It does look like they have the whole original series, the reboot series (we’ve seen that already), but not the movies nor the audio drama (which continues the story after the original series ends in 1971).

It turns out there are conventions of fans for the show every year (it was on the air longer than “Star Trek” and has far more episodes), either in Los Angeles or New York annually. Actors from the original series still show up like many other fan conventions, even though the show went off the air fifty years ago (god I feel old).

That has a long history, I assume it stems from a certain inferiority complex regarding Europe. Americans saw that they were culturally and technologically more advanced than we were, but insisted that they were morally degenerate and we had remained virtuous and pure because we were not corrupted by their effete brand of culture and intellectualism.

It took the shock of the Cold War and Sputnik to get us to start putting emphasis on education, but that was directed at certain specific goals, and a lot of that was abandoned starting with Reagan and his budget cuts, and continues to this day with Trump and Betsy DeVos.

Yikes. I looked up the book on Wikipedia [the font of all human ken, citation needed]. The section on Hans Asperger was pilloried by a few book reviewers as apologia for the Nazi régime.

Dr. Manuel Casanova has also written against Silberman’s perspective that Hans Asperger, one of the first autism researchers, should be forgiven for his involvement in the Nazi regime. “Contrary to Mr. Silberman,” Casanova wrote in response, “I do not defend or condone [Asperger’s] murderous actions.”

NeuroTribes (Wikipedia)

Edith Scheffer, a modern European history scholar, wrote in 2018 that Asperger cooperated with the Nazi regime, including sending children to the Spiegelgrund clinic which participated in the euthanasia program. Scheffer wrote a book further elaborating on her research called Asperger’s Children: The Origins of Autism in Nazi Vienna (2018).

Another scholar and historian from the Medical University of Vienna, Herwig Czech concluded in a 2017 article in the journal Molecular Autism, which was published in April 2018:

Asperger managed to accommodate himself to the Nazi regime and was rewarded for his affirmations of loyalty with career opportunities. He joined several organizations affiliated with the NSDAP (although not the Nazi party itself), publicly legitimized race hygiene policies including forced sterilizations and, on several occasions, actively cooperated with the child ‘euthanasia’ program.

Hans Asperger (Wikipedia)

From the beginning of that article:

Johann “Hans” Friedrich Karl Asperger (/ˈæspɜːrɡər/, German: [hans ˈʔaspɛɐ̯ɡɐ]; 18 February 1906 - 21 October 1980) was an Austrian pediatrician, eugenicist, medical theorist, and medical professor. He is best known for his early studies on mental disorders, specifically in children. His work was largely unnoticed during his lifetime except for a few accolades in Vienna, and his studies on psychological disorders acquired world renown only posthumously. He wrote over 300 publications, mostly concerning a condition he termed autistic psychopathy (AP).

There was a resurgence of interest in his work beginning in the 1980s, and due to his earlier work on autism spectrum disorders, Asperger syndrome (AS), was named after him. Both Asperger’s original pediatric diagnosis of AP and the eponymous diagnosis of AS that was named after him several decades later have been controversial. He was involved highly in the Nazi regime and was appointed to his high position over other Jewish doctors and because he was against the Jewish people.

Not a very nice guy.

Amazon Prime has the 1966 episodes under a separate title: Dark Shadows, Beginnings.

Hulu has 1966 episodes, but only beginning at Episode 201.

When “Dark Shadows” launched, it was a Gothic Romance soap opera. It didn’t do well in daytime ratings, and the supernatural arc of the story was added starting with Episode 201.

According to various accounts on the Internet, the reason the show was cancelled was due to a disconnect between sponsors of the show and viewers of the show.

Soap operas were primarily financed by domestic product companies, and tobacco companies. When the show took off with its supernatural arc, it became hugely popular with teenagers and pre-teens, who didn’t buy domestic products like dishsoap.

That wasn’t a problem for the show until the US Government banned cigarette advertising on television on 1 April 1970. With that, the show became unprofitable.

Well, I can’t say as I haven’t read the book nor did I know the man.

I can read what was written about him, including Dr. Asperger joining pro-Nazi groups in Austria and sending children to Aktion T-4 murder sites. That’s pretty much undisputed.

Hans Asperger, National Socialism, and “race hygiene” in Nazi-era Vienna (from the peer-reviewed journal “Molecular Autism”, goes to StartPage because LGF thinks the link is a telephone number and won’t reproduce it)

Pioneering autism doctor Hans Asperger sent disabled children to be killed by Nazis, new study claims (The Independent)

Experts say that the history had to be found and made public - but caution that it should cause no distress to anyone who identifies with the syndrome that took his name.

The issue is not he was able to define autism in children (which he called Autistic Psychosis, renamed Autism Disorder), but what he did with his research.

That’s why it was removed from the DSM-V and added to the broader category of Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2013: The American Psychiatric Association really didn’t want a disorder and diagnosis named after a Nazi eugenicist.

It truly is a spectrum. When I’m talking what I know a good amount, I can come off confident and knowledgeable but get me flustered than my stutter comes out and frustration. I haven’t read this particular author’s work but I very much doubt he’s a Nazi sympathizer. When ASD disorders first started getting researched, I believe Dr. Asperger was seen as someone who got it and described people like me, your son, and millions of others to a tee. In fact, I remember reading that he was apparently not that different from the young men he researched as a child. They call people like me and your son “Little Professors”, I’ve had people that don’t know me very well say I should be a teacher of history. I’m always flattered as I deeply admire teachers but I think people don’t understand autism while it definitely has a role in why I have a genuine passion for history, I have a crippling shyness around strangers and it would be really hard for me to have to grade people that I would be getting to personally know. I like talking to people about history but I don’t like the idea of having to grade them. I understand obviously that grading is necessary to academia but it’s not for me.

This mother should call the ACLU on this incident…

A North Carolina mother is blasting law enforcement officers for their violent treatment of her son outside an emergency room during a mental health crisis. The teen is expected in court today facing four charges from the incident, including felony malicious conduct.

In surveillance video of the scene, which happened in December in Lincolnton, outside Charlotte, security guards are seen tackling the teenager. At another point, a sheriff’s deputy punches him in the head while he’s handcuffed, reports correspondent Don Dahler.

His mother, Jessica Long, told CBS’ Charlotte affiliate WBTV that security officers and law enforcement escalated the situation instead of helping her son, who’s been treated for mental illness in the past. “They did the worst; they made it worse,” Long said.

The shocking video shows the moments Long’s 16-year-old son, Hayden, was tackled to the ground and punched twice in the head. “They just immediately went for full-blown physical force,” said Long. “And these were big guys, and my son’s, what, maybe 120 pounds.”

Thurmond was just the beginning. Pretty much every Southern Republican that ran in the Civil Rights Movement was a disgruntled Democrat running to the right of the Democrats on Civil Rights. These weren’t Rockefeller Republicans or George Romney Republicans. These were people who were longtime Democrats that hated that the Democrats really starting under Truman started being a pro civil rights party.

The great grandparents of the modern day yellow dog Republican in the deep South were yellow dog Democrats. The irony is for all the right’s contempt of so called identity politics is that their entire political success in the South on a federal level is due to it. Goldwater whether you want to label him a bigot or not for opposing CRA-1964 definitely caused more people to trust the Republican party on a federal level in the South. The question we need to ask is why and how that spread. I think Reagan’s the one that perfected it though.

I say this with no data to back it up, but I don’t think anything has changed but the reporting/social media. Used to be you would MAYBE hear about a story like this if it was local and in any given town this probably doesn’t happen all that often. I would say that we have come to stress quantity over quality, force over persuasion, and shooting first over asking questions later ever

they look at every situation as if it must be instantly de-escalated - as if every situation would necessarily escalate.
as if every child in school who acts out is instantly going to get massively violent
or someone who’s taken to the ER for treatment because something’s obviouisly wrong is now a criminal because he cant/wont comply…

doesnt meant the hospital staff isnt at some kind of risk. just that doctors and nurses and teachers and admins used to do this years ago without the need or aid of actual police. also doesnt mean some of those situations in the past might have been over their heads. after all we didnt used to metal detect before walking into a school.

but overall imo the police in these situations are treating everyone as a potential criminal and not the special needs student, or stressed patient that they are. which again, is why they are in the building this is happening in.

Was merely stating that the police misconduct did not start because of Trump. BLM and the reformist prosecutors/sheriffs movement is a response to decades of shit like this rather than Trump. Trump’s ascendancy meanwhile I think is also related to this since he responded with unquestioned support for LEO that get in trouble for misconduct and yes he has encouraged more abuse.

I meant to be able to lodge a criminal complaint in the first place. I’m saying that without the video and just Rodney King’s word, it’s unlikely it even goes to trial. You’re right. Even with the video, they were still acquitted which is why this is an ongoing theme.

Correct, what I was saying that without the video, I don’t even think Rodney King would have been able to file a criminal complaint even if there was visual evidence of him having been beaten and eyewitness testimony but the video tape made an indictment at least possible. The problem I think is so much of our country has an almost saint likel view of the cops. And I get that to an extent. We all properly remember the heroics of the NYPD on 9/11 in responding at Ground Zero and those guys do deserve our eternal thanks and help as they still deal with the aftermath of that. However, there still needs to be accountability. We can acknowledge cops have stressful jobs and still acknowledge that it shouldn’t be lawful or proper police behavior to beat unarmed suspects or shoot to kill people who are clearly not armed.

Has law enforcement training changed in some way? Is there some emphasis on establishing and enforcing a position of physical superiority immediately and perhaps not taking account of the situation and perhaps de-escalating the situation via some other method?

Warrior Cop training, and its accompanying narrative of how police are always under threat and must respond lethally without hesitation. But more generally, the culture of law enforcement and the culture of firearm ownership have both hardened up their worldviews in which rapid, decisive violence is heroic and the world is filled with people who are a priori greater threats—guess who—that merit immediate violence. It’s not really new, it’s in line with old racist tropes about violence, but the internet has created safe spaces for cops with a certain orientation towards violence to get together and generate a shared just-so story of why they’re the Really Good Guys precisely because they beat people down. There’s also the pseudo-academic legitimization of violence…for pay, since the ideas are sold in seminars…which provides a shared lexicon and set of tropes for why this makes sense.

Mind you, that’s not the whole picture, because institutions like schools are participating in this idea that there’s no de-escalation. They might not take it to lethal force, but restraining and isolating children hard and fast is on the rise.

The problem I think is so much of our country has an almost saint likel view of the cops…. We can acknowledge cops have stressful jobs and still acknowledge that it shouldn’t be lawful or proper police behavior to beat unarmed suspects or shoot to kill people who are clearly not armed.

The issue we saw in Ferguson (and many other places) is that most any DA needs to work with the local police to obtain indictments and convictions, therefore, they are hesitate to indict or convict policemen.

We need a system of outside prosecutors to counteract this clear conflict of interest.

re: #149 Joe Bacon 🌹

This made me cry. I am always worried about my son and the cops. He’s got really long hair, a beard(he looks like a Viking, lol) and he’s autistic. It wouldn’t take much for a southern red neck cop to decide he was an addict or criminal and we know how the story goes. He’s had traffic citations before and the cops were cool, one even figured out he was on the spectrum and gave him his card. Turns out the officer’s kid is on the spectrum as well and is about the same age. Luck. That’s all it was.

If this was my kid, eighty fucking shades of HELL would be raised. Someone would pay and some heads would roll. And how do you even begin to undo the damage? All this shit for what? I’m livid and it’s not even my kid.

then the guy doubled down and kruse brought receipts:

That guy is using a common, D’Souza-tested tactic - first you deny that the Southern Democrats became the Southern Republicans to get someone to respond.

Next you say, “Name one Dixiecrat besides Strom Thurmond who became Republican!”

Because the Dixiecrats were in 1948, and the Southern Strategy really didn’t start till 20 years later, a lot of the old Dixiecrats in Congress or in state governments stayed Democrats for the seniority and committee assignments. But they were succeeded in office by younger men who HAD switched parties - Trent Lott, for example.

Including, oddly enough, the old dislike of Eastern Europeans. As I understand it, there’s a fair amount of discrimination against Poles in the UK.

While a lot of their American counterparts who are descendants of Eastern Europeans engage in the same nativism. My mom has a lot of cousins who are big Trumpers.

I got into a discussion on FB, with a libertarian-type conservative who’s an IRL friend of New Mexico Bro (aka My Idiot Brother), who is generally able to discuss things respectfully. It was about the Electoral College and that old “We’re a republic not a democracy” wheeze.

One of his friends who joined the discussion posted something from an old Army manual, defining Republic and Democracy. I looked up the original manual, and HOLY HELL! is it racist! It’s about “How To Be A Good Citizen”, but it’s from 1928, and the intro warns that, up until 30 years previous, the US had been mostly populated with good Anglo Saxon stock, who had self-governing traditions, but that more recently immigrants had been coming from Eastern Europe, where there were no such traditions, and this was a DANGER!! to the republic!!

I scanned it. There was almost no mention of blacks, or slavery, or the civil war. It was as if America was entirely - and solely - made up of white people.

It was taken out of circulation in 1932, apparently, and mostly recalled and destroyed. But it give you some idea of the world back then. This was only a few years after “Black Wall Street” was erased in Tulsa.

It’s disturbing that this is still out there, still being quoted by otherwise intelligent people.

Who says it’s a cult?

This just goes to show a dominance of the Troll Culture that defines the right wing now and this evidence that they are happy and comfortable to troll each other with over the top signs like this.

We are under the control of the Troll Culture based on rabidly malignant Narcissism. Trump is the result of this, but it has been building its base solidifying the right wing for years. Trump will also be the victim of his own trolling if/when the economy shits the bed and our enormous Federal Credit Card comes due.
