There are a lot of churches where I live, but thank God there are no megachurches anywhere nearby.

I am also happy my Pastor has been extremely on point with the COVID precautions. We’ve been doing online services for the past three Sundays now. That’s how I know I picked a good church.

By the way, I was always taught the whole “God will multiply your blessings” thing was meant as: “If you work hard and with purpose and you live out your faith well in your daily life, God will reward you for it.”

Not that he would magically make more of something out of thin air.

Religious groups of any denomination are a public health threat when they ignore the public health experts warning to avoid group settings.

This is what caused an outbreak in South Korea - thousands of cases tied to a single church gathering.

We will see the same here in the states. We have seen it with Jewish celebrations (New Rochelle bar mitzvah) being an initial outbreak point, and we’ll see it with Christian gatherings too (cue Liberty U in about a week to 10 days), and we’ll see it with these megachurches that ignore the expert warnings to not hold public gatherings.

The Orthodox Jewish community in Bergen county was on the vanguard telling everyone to stay home and avoid going to shul and to not even attend funerals or shiva calls due to the dangers. Even still there are other communities where they were still holding weddings w/more than 50 people, which is just nuts.

And of course, there are state leaders who think nothing wrong with any of these gatherings.

That’s why when Dr. Brix says that 200,000 dead is if everything goes perfectly, you know damned well it’s going to be much worse than that since nothing has gone perfectly to date and nothing will so long as Trump continues to botch the federal response and leads from behind.

I was talking with colleagues in India, and they were on a total lockdown. No one outside at all except for limited hours to get food and health-related issues. Police enforcement (there are videos of Indian police clobbering people who are out with no excuse). Only one person allowed out any any time for said food/health related trips. No nonessential travel.

All of that would be useful here, but we still have states doing nothing, all while cases are active in their states. This guarantees a worse outcome, especially since we aren’t doing nearly enough testing.

Even if we started doing 45 minute testing tomorrow, it’s not going to be enough to bend the curve.

The article said that the MegaChurch livestreams so there’s no need to hold services in person. The only real reason for continuing in person services at this time is that they probably pass the plate to collect funds and if the service is online, they will lose that opportunity.

Certainly many parishioners may not be computer literate and so therefore would be deprived of religious observances — but the church should be placing the lives of the congregants first, if they actually cared about them.

It starts with Religious Persecution and ends with the the Mandatory 666 vaccine!!!

Hadn’t realized that Florida had yet implemented a stay at home/social distancing order. Saw something today that the governor had made an announcement of some kind but it sounded more like a recommendation.

Or was this in violation of a County order?

It will, and the answer to that charge is that they’re not being stopped because they’re a church. Plenty of churches are having online service. Now, we know that there are areas that don’t have the infrastructure for that, but I doubt those places contain a megachurch.

I really don’t understand the end game with the right’s endless hyping of chloroquine. Is it really as simple as them thinking it’ll make Trump look good if he happened to guess which treatment was best?

In Trump’s Sacred Realm of Dream Reality (the one he has been drifting through for more than three years now), he would be the visionary who recommended an quick, cheap and easily available cure to the Covid scourge, and then send us all back to work to set the economy booming again.

This is why, as much as AOC seemed all in on Bernie, she still seemed like someone worth backing because she actually understands politics in a way that some of her colleagues don’t. Incrementalism isn’t a sin, it’s an understanding that you can’t get everything you want all at once, and half a pie is better than no pie at all. Yes, complacency is dangerous, but then so is purity politics. Accept what you can get and keep pushing for the rest so that it can be a reality later. Don’t stomp your feet if you can’t get 100% all at once and demand that the road to getting even part of what you want be torn down and dug up.

AOC has a future ahead of her, which is a lot more than can be said of the folks remaining on the Bern It Down train.

Yeah, some people read the whole “loaves and fishes” thing and their inherent desires & magical thinking kicked in, and well, things got out of hand from there.

I’ll avoid digging into the whole medieval trade in indulgences thing, but yeah, the “live out your faith well in your daily life” thing seems to be sadly lacking in the MAGAchurches. How is it that yelling really loud about Jesus in an aggressive way is taken to be a good thing? It’s like religious faith is equivalent to a school pep rally or something.

Now Monday afternoon and I haven’t heard anything. Will probably email the manager back soon since I fill no particular compulsion to haul this box a couple of blocks and have to leave it outside another building.

There’s a reason most people don’t have that option. They can’t care for a loved one properly. They don’t have the skill or ability to do so.

Or it’s not a safe situation at home.

Or they lack the equipment or space to have them at home properly.

But that they’re warning to take people home if possible is a value signal that it’s going to get dire quickly.

NJ: 37 new deaths & 3,347 new cases in past day; death toll now 198; 16,636 cases statewide

NYC: 1st minor dies from coronavirus in NYC, death toll climbs to 790, citywide cases now 36,221

And Macy’s is furloughing 130,000 workers.

If you thought last week’s unemployment stats were crapulent, you aint seen nothing yet.

All of this could have been mitigated/minimized with Trump following the very protocols his predecessor put together and that the public health experts demanded.

He ignored them and instead took the advice of know nothings like Jared and a law professor who has zero experience in public health or medicine.

furlough - another word for layoff which is another word for fired

we’re looking at unemployment worse than the depression.

figure 30-50% of all open to the street businesses (ie retail, food, etc) not reopening.

rental real estate ownership is gonna be a bear.
there’s not gonna be new businesses needing all that retail space.
many malls never even recovered from ‘09. they’re gonna be wastelands.
there will be no market to sell to
or any need to build another new one

maybe turn into affordable housing of some kind.

Italy reported its lowest new cases in 12 days, so hopefully that is a sign that their lockdown is working.

Spain reports their lowest new cases in 8 days, likewise hopefully indicates their lockdown is working.

I am noticing a huge disparity in the quality of shows broadcasting from home. CBS this morning was super high quality video and audio, like they sent professional equipment to people’s homes, If they didn’t tell you they were working from home you could have assumed they were on a set, where The View it seems like a crappy Zoom meeting with laptop web cams and microphones.

You’d think these people all being fairly wealthy could afford to set up a decent home system at least as good as your typical youtuber. Or maybe the studio could hook them up for decent home broadcasting.

I think it’s totally valid to question who gets ventilators when we run out, if they have been going to church/Trump rallies/beaches/ignoring Shelter in Place orders or not.

Not sure if it’s practical, having doctors check their social media feeds and whatnot to see if they’ve been naughty or nice. Not sure if we’ll get their, but the consideration should be made if it gets dire.

‘Murica:

Armed neighbors in Maine chopped down a tree to block a man and his roommates from leaving their house out of fear that they had the coronavirus

Residents of a small island in Maine took the coronavirus quarantine matters into their own hands, and potentially broke the law in the process.

Sheriff’s deputies in Vinalhaven, an island town of about 1,100 people, arrived after a man found a downed tree blocking the driveway to a home he shared with two roommates.

“While investigating the downed tree, a neighbor started yelling at him and a group of people showed up and began to gather around,” the Knox County sheriff’s office said in a press release seen by Business Insider, adding that the man told officials that several neighbors displayed guns.

“Believing the group may be there to harm him, [he] fled to his residence and told his roommates what he had found. The trio decided to stay put in the residence, utilized a VHF radio to hail the Coast Guard for assistance, they had no other means of communication, and utilized their drone to keep an eye on the group until law enforcement could arrive to help them,” the statement added.

It turns out the neighbors’ fears over the spread of the novel coronavirus were misinformed, despite the fact that the homes’ occupants were driving vehicles with New Jersey license plates.

It’s not based on ideology, it’s based on behavior and response to orders handed out by government in the best interest of public safety. If you reject those safety measures and increase risk and only seems fair that when choices are made, your own choices are considered.

If there are so many liver transplants to go around and you chose to keep drinking and not get help quitting, the ethics board will def take that into consideration.

It’s silly. The average hospital has people wandering in and out all the time. They are visiting, have an appointment in some specialty department, whatever. This has nothing to do with how many patients are being treated in the hospital. The fact that no one is wandering in or out, or walking down the street is because of hospitals prohibiting visitors and cancelling appointments and things generally being on lockdown.

According to a local doctor:

— the death rate doubling time in Calif slowed to 5 days (more reliable than cases, which depends on testing)
— in San Mateo county, it slowed to 1-2 wks, only 1 death in 4 days. Curve Flattening is happening.
— Of note, in USA doubling remains at 3 days (for many reasons, but largely due to delays in responses such as shelter in place, and disbelief/disinterest of policymakers and citizens. Bay Area led the country in response, so we are seeing results first too).

This seems consistent with data I’ve seen, but I haven’t bothered to run the numbers myself. It’s early days yet, but but I think we’re doing it right.
Of course, what this means is fewer people have gotten sick and there is a large pool of people who can get it as soon as we relax the stay home orders, but I’d like to think someone is working on how to get things up and moving again without a large second wave of covid.

Here in San Diego we have 515 cases, far fewer per 100k population than many counties in the South. We’ve been under lockdown since the governor gave the issue.

Only today did DeSantis give a lockdown order, and that for only a few counties in the southeast part of his state.

And the hospitals they are taking pictures of probably are quite. Their quite because they are in areas that have YET to be hit hard by the COVID-19 virus. Hospitals are not doing electives.
Hospitals are not accepting any visitors except under specific circumstances.
ERs are being cleared out of non-emergency cases (diverted to urgent care centers). Waiting rooms are being cleared.

Why?

Because the same hospitals are overrun by covid19 cases swamping ICUs and staff to the point where they’re converting other parts of the hospitals into covid19 units.

But sure, post a picture of a waiting room with zero context.

Woke up this morning to checked Facebook and noticed all my conservative family members and friends are posting how the hospitals are empty and there’s “no crisis at the ER.” I checked Twitter and see they got their disinformation from the usual right wing sources.

if this is a ‘hoax’ it would have to be the largest, best coordinated ‘conspiracy’ of all times - involving multiple governments at all levels around the world. coordination with hospitals, thousands of health care workers, governors, the royal family, and on and on.

millions of people will have volunteered to lose their jobs, businesses, etc and every single one keeping their collective mouths shut

WFH moment of the month:

While on a zoom conference on my phone I received a phone call from a local area code. Since my wife has had a lot of medical issues recently I answered putting my Zoom conference on hold. Some guy says, “Did you just call me?”. I course I simply said “No”. The result was a stream of hate about how I was a m***f*** liar. Well, I lost it and launched into a profanity laden stream of anger directed at this guy. Then I realized he had hung up. Uh oh. So my next question was “Did you guys hear that”. There was pause…then a tentative “yes”.

I am still embarrassed days later.

Deceptive though, as easily happens when there is exponential growth plus a long time between inception of virus and resolution. 70% of the total outstanding cases are mild and most of those will probably remain so. The number will settle down to a much lower rate. The question is what % of serious/critical cases will survive. If it’s 90%, then the mortality rate would still be an unacceptably high 5%, but that is due to the massive undercounting of total cases. We will have to wait and see when they can do a retrospective study and determine what percentage of population was actually infected.

And we’re already at +700x Benghazi that we all know the GOP were fixated on as a crime or malfeasance requiring multiple hearings.

The horrible thing here is that we need hearings on Trump’s abject failures, but that would imperil those who’d be holding them (and those who’d testify) because of the health crisis entirely of Trump’s doing.

A company in Oklahoma:

One of the few positive things about the Coronavirus pandemic is that it shows us just how greedy, heartless and merciless some corporations can truly be.

For example, we have learned via the Ogle Mole Network that ImageNet Consulting - an Oklahoma City-based “Information Technology Solutions” firm that sells high-dollar copiers, scanners, and IT services to companies all across the country - wanted their remaining employees to forfeit a portion of their April paycheck that is equal to the amount they will receive from their government-issued Coronavirus stimulus payment.

Basically, ImageNet Consulting came up with a plan to pocket their employees’ stimulus checks!

The move came after the company had already conducted mass layoffs as a result of the pandemic. It was first kind of reported by KXAN out of Austin, which is home to an ImageNet Consulting branch.

San Diego County coronavirus cases surge past 500

San Diego County reported 31 new COVID-19 cases Sunday, bringing the total to 519. The death toll remained unchanged at seven.

The largest number of cases, 130, was among patients in the 30-39 age range, followed by 107 cases among 20- to 29-year-olds. Only four cases were patients 9 or younger, and 298 of the cases were males.

[…]

Interesting statistic. We’re a county full of retirees, but the young male crowd seems to be the hardest hit.

I’m reminded of those news stories of Navy sailors testing positive.

The young think they’re invincible. Even when I go to the grocery store I see young people walk together, not taking the hand wipes at the door, etc.

If you think that China is lying about covid19 and their containment - suppressing the total cases and death toll, but think Trump’s doing a great job here, you might be a Trumpist ignoring facts and logic, because Trump tried the China approach of lying and suppressing testing and minimizing the toll for as long as possible.

As it is, we’re still not testing nearly enough to get containment, and it’s likely that China still has cases despite claiming to have clamped down.

China’s malfeasance doesn’t affect Trump’s performance. He was briefed on this in January. He was briefed in February and downplayed it both times. He is responsible for slow rolling the response, and not using the WHO test, especially when the CDC version ended up having critical faults.

Every day of delay in aggressive testing meant the disease spread undetected, until it reached critical mass.

And now we’ve got a death toll that keeps growing by the day and Trumpists are treating 100,000 dead as a win.

Anything more than 1 is a fucking terrible loss. We couldn’t prevent all the deaths, but we could have prevented the scope and size of the death toll by taking the SK approach. That worked. We see the results. Trump led from the rear and states acted haphazardly and inconsistently - ignoring the experts and far too many delayed.

Dutch museum says van Gogh painting stolen in overnight raid

A painting by Dutch master Vincent van Gogh was stolen in an overnight smash-and-grab raid on a museum that was closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, police and the museum said Monday.

The Singer Laren museum east of Amsterdam said that “The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring 1884” by the Dutch master was taken in the early hours of Monday. By early afternoon, all that could be seen from the outside of the museum was a large white panel covering a door in the building’s glass facade.

Cuomo asks nurses and doctors in other areas not impacted to come to NY and help. When we are on the other side of the curve, NY will send our workers to your state.

As is being done in France — patients are transferred from stressed regions (Grande Est, Ile de France) to less heavily impacted regions (and neighbouring countries), simultaneously nurses and doctors volunteer to move to the stressed regions to help reduce the load.

But then, even if you think Emmanuel Macron is an insufferable git, he’s no Donald Trump.

And transferred to Germany where space is available, and supplies from there and Czech Republic and elsewhere are taken where they’re needed by NATO military airlift. There definitely could be better sharing, but there’s more going on than you’d think because they don’t call the TV camera crews in to make sure it hits all the propaganda sites (cough China, Russia cough).

Yup. I was reading that the French were using their TGV trains to transport multiple patients to hospitals in less affected areas instead of air flights or ambulances due to the ability to move gear, multiple patients, and with speed. It’s a great use of the infrastructure they have, and it can help spread the load.

Also, having medical help from other areas coming to NYC can help not only ease the load on NYC docs, but there’ll be knowledge transfers that work both ways to help recover people faster. And when the NYC crisis eases, those docs will be able to share their hard learned lessons elsewhere.

NYC has a volume of cases that few other places in the country can match in a normal day.

Lemmings:

Crowds of gawkers ignored New York’s social-distance regulations and packed the west side of Manhattan on Monday to watch a US Navy hospital ship arrive to give badly needed coronavirus aid.

The throngs of people stood shoulder to shoulder and took photos of the USNS Comfort as it pulled into Pier 90 near West 50th Street at about 10:40 a.m., photos of the scene show.

Some waved American flags and others huddled against one another at the fence of the pier. Meanwhile, joggers out for a morning run brushed past the onlookers.

At least a dozen NYPD cops stood by and initially did not disperse the bone-headed bystanders as they gathered and snapped cellphone photos of the ship pulling into the pier.

And the hospitals they are taking pictures of probably are quite. Their quite because they are in areas that have YET to be hit hard by the COVID-19 virus. Hell, St.Luke’s Magic Valley is taking COVID-19 patients from Blaine County to help ease their patient load because they have the beds available.

A bit late, but important…

Hospitals are closing all entrances except for 1 to allow screening of temperatures prior to entry. So, yes, entrances will be closed. My brother is an essential healthcare worker. This protocol was put in place 3 weeks ago for his safety and everyone else’s safety.

Tragic news to report on the health front:
Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State, noted war criminal and friend of Mao and the Shah or Iran, is still alive. He is 96.
Rest in peace, SOON.

I’ve often joked about Franco, Pinochet, Reagan and Thatcher being roommates in hell. For whatever reason, I never though Nixon deserved to be with them. But Kissinger? I will dance when he goes to his allies in hell.

Today’s case update says while we may be flattening the curve it’s not as flat as I’d like, although they caution that it includes some cases that were not reported over the last two days. But still, 202 new cases and 3 new deaths is not great news. (We are at 28 total deaths in the county now; I will say the death doubling rate hasn’t been awful, at least.)

We hadn’t broken 100 new cases in a day in the county.

Tonight marks two weeks since the shelter in place order started. Over two weeks for some of the intermediate steps they took though, like no gatherings over 1k and aiming for 6ft distance in things like restaurants, etc. Also over two weeks since a lot of the major tech companies switched to work from home.

Well, you gotta have traffic to make traffic stops: and if Baltimore is anything like NYC, the streets are likely to be pretty empty.

It is eerie walking around the City streets with virtually no vehicles on them: I went out grocery shopping this afternoon, and the mid-day traffic level was like 4:00am-on-a-holiday-weekend-before-a-blizzard light.

Vehicle and pedestrian traffic on my street seems to have increased during the shut down. My house is about two blocks from the paved trail system along the Mississippi River so there are a lot of walkers and bikers going by while I’m stuck at my work computer all day.

Nah, they had to stay open for spring break the same reason that our own beaches here in Va Beach were open until today: Tourism dollars. When your state relies upon a flat sales tax to fund its budget, welcoming thousands of potential plague rats to party on your beaches is seen as “better” than blowing a massive hole in next year’s budget.

I run …a lot… and there are definitely more people out doing physical activity right now. Which makes sense, because it’s one of the few things allowed to get out of the house, so long as you maintain your 6ft from others.

Because of that, I’m actually avoiding my normal multi-use trail because it’s harder to keep that personal space bubble when the trail is busy. There’s relatively less traffic on the normal roads and so far I’ve only been nearly hit once (today! DUDE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CROSSWALK WHEN YOU STOPPED AT THE STOP SIGN AND THEN YOU STARTED REVVING TO GO FORWARD WHEN I WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU WTF ahem.) so …there’s that.

Doing loops around the neighborhood isn’t the most fun but it’s better than in the backyard, so… (I have a 2.62 mile loop, which is extremely convenient for either half or full training, and then a 3.25 mile loop, which is great for a 5 or 10k.)

Got center-cut pork chops. Got scallions and garlic and the trinity if I want to chop that much. Have an idea that if I sear the veggies, set aside, sear the chops, then add onion soup and water for a finish in the oven I will get a veggie soup and meat all in one big iron pan.

My sister is actually trying to figure this out - she’s in NY, parents are in NJ. Everyone has been doing the proper self-isolation thing, with minimal trips to the grocery store. She was going to go home for Palm Sunday and now, since she’s working from home, she could go for even longer. We’ve talked about it and judge the risk in either direction is low, because …everyone’s been self-isolating for at least two weeks. (Again, granted, not quite 100%, but it’s a lot better than nothing - and she hasn’t worked with any plague vectors children in over two weeks, so.)

BUT. Both states have stay-at-home orders. So. Legal to drive home to spend some time with the folks before heading back up to her apartment? Not sure.

Check what the state says the exceptions are, should be online. In MD (we just got the official with penalties lock down, before it was ‘suggested’) there is an exception for “care”.

I ended up digging into both states’ info and was surprised at how lenient NY’s order is (and also how hard it is to find the actual text). Nothing about staying at home, necessarily, just focusing on non-essential stuff closed, no non-essential gatherings, and practice at least 6ft physical separation.

NJ does allow travel to visit family.

So it looks like she should be okay to go home and visit for a few days, which will make my mom extremely happy.

re: #43 Khal Wimpo (not drinking damn fish tank cleaner)

You’d think that they’d be able to figure out putting a PayPal button or link onto the web page. Sheesh. Frictionless payment systems are pretty much what the modern web is built around.

Some churches (like Steven Anderson’s hate church over in Tempe) are banned from Paypal. Seriously.

I have been watching Calvinista Twitter wrap itself into knots today to justify not following government directives. It usually boils down to “forsake not the assembling of yourselves together.” The real problem is they don’t want to obey government orders, and when someone brings up Romans 13 (usually used as a hammer for obedience to the government) it’s “but we can’t forsakenotheassemblingofyourselvestogether.” The reality is these people, these hyper-Calvinist Reformed types are more anarchistic than anarchists. They don’t recognize any authority except their own. Even real anarchists (I follow a few on Twitter) are telling people to hunker down. These guys? They’re having church.

Our governor (Doug Ducey, AZ) issued an executive order for stay at home until April 30 but it’s essentially toothless.

Section 2e of his executive order 2020-18: “No person shall be required to provide documentation or proof of their activities to justify their activities under this order.”

It also does not update the essential businesses, so golf courses and salons are still essential, which is just incredible fuckery.

Some businesses are going out of the way to label themselves essential, and therefore require people to come to work or otherwise avoid being stopped.

Michaels is one company. Another is Restoration Hardware’s call center.

Joann Fabric is yet another.

A few are claiming that they are necessary because teachers and students might need resources. Sears claims that people might need tools or appliances.

If you keep expanding what people might need, there’s no quarantine/self-isolation to speak off.

The GOP are fine with that - and the body count will suffer. Americans will suffer.

Brix and her 200,000 if things go perfectly will turn out to be a wildly optimistic take as this disease takes a firm hold in the South and predominantly GOP states while spilling over into those states that are trying to be more diligent on testing and containment.

All the way back to Cotton Mather (of witch trial fame), when reading up on how to prevent a smallpox epidemic came across inoculation methods recommended by physicians in the Ottoman Empire.

He ordered a mass inoculation campaign across Massachusetts when a smallpox outbreak occurred in Boston; preachers across the state opposed him, saying it was God’s will. Mather threatened to arrest and jail preachers who opposed his order to physicians.

You brought me back to the early 1980’s when all the mills were closing down. Duquesne Steelworks closed in 1984. At its peak, it employed 9000 workers. Each employee had a family and kept 1-2 others in business through buying groceries, getting cars serviced, etc.

Lots of friends lost their jobs then. All they wanted to do was work at the mill like their father and grandfather, live in the neighborhood they grew up in, raise a family, maybe go to the neighborhood bar Saturday evening and see all their buddies from grade and high school. Mostly gone now.

The area is far different than it was 40 years ago. And there are an awful lot of Steelers stickers in the DC Region.
