Wyoming numbers. (Apparently there is no one at LGF who lives in Wyoming, so I’ll keep up since I’m downwind of them.)

Total cases: 715 (+14)
Hospitalised: 68 (+1)
Recovered: 496
Deaths: 7 (no change)
All counties but one (Weston) have cases.
Largest age group: 19-29
Second-largest age group: 40-49
Native-Americans make up 32% of cases but 2.4% of the state population
Largest county: Fremont (ski-country), second-largest Laramie (seat, largest city, and state capital: Cheyenne)

Well, there’s also the wingnut “constitutional” sheriff of Weld County, Colorado just south of me. Your state has way more wingnuts than mine apparently.

It’s a six-year-old link on a little dinky newspaper. The website did go through a major overhaul after it was purchased by a local media conglomerate a couple of years ago, so a lot of older stories are probably memory holed. I’ll see if I can find the original article and change the link.

I did get this article though on a search of the newspaper:

In continued defiance of health orders, Shooters Grill takes dining outside (Glenwood Springs, Colo. Post Independent)

After a cease and desist letter, a temporary restraining order and being told by Garfield County Public Health not to serve customers on the premise, Shooters Grill owner Lauren Beobert decided to take it outside.

Dining, that is.

With most businesses continuing to adhere to public health orders from local and state governments and minimal vehicle traffic on Third Street Thursday morning, Boebert set up tables on the sidewalk and parking spaces outside of her downtown Rifle restaurant and began serving breakfast to customers.

“I’ve been patient, followed all of the proper channels, and provided service in a safe and responsible manner using the same guidelines as neighboring Mesa County restaurants. When that wasn’t good enough for our local officials, they issued a cease and desist,” Boebert said in a statement Thursday. “The fact remains that my staff needs their paychecks, so this morning I moved my tables out onto the city street and opened back up for business.”

Thank goodness my county sheriff has more to do than post to Facebook and grandstand against public health orders.

Despite me living in Conservatopia, everyone is complying with public health orders from the state here. The sheriff’s department has little to do besides what they normally do: wrangle loose cattle (and llamas on the llama farm about a mile west of me) from the county roads.

Aw hell naw. I’ve only been to Rifle once, and that seems like once too many.

I have (rarely) seen people here open-carry a firearm. They fit into three groups: Hunters in the field, the very occasional rancher or farmer in the general store with a varmint gun holstered, or the county sheriff or deputy.

Even the gun shop owner never did the open carry thing except when he was hunting.

Well, we just got hammered by a thunderstorm complex that wandered in from the east (not in any prediction by the NWS whatsoever). 1.4” of rain and massive cloud to ground lightning strikes. Very local to the downtown area. Completely random.

Meanwhile the predicted squall line is approaching from the west, and it looks REALLY nasty. Hopefully the Black Swan from the east will break up the squall line from the west, having taken some of the energy out of the system in this immediate area.

National Police Week concludes today with National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day in which law enforcement agencies across the country pay tribute to officers who have fallen in the line of duty. This week has also marked the official addition of Trooper Jerry Smith’s name to both the Nebraska and National Law Enforcement Memorials.

“This is a tough week for our entire NSP family, but it’s been made especially difficult because remembrance ceremonies have been cancelled due to COVID-19 circumstances,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “While we can’t gather together today to remember Jerry, we are united in appreciation for his life of service. We ask all Nebraskans to keep his family in your thoughts today.”

Trooper Smith was killed a few months ago when a man turned left in front of him on US-26 at the cemetery in Bridgeport. That driver was also killed. The collision was nearly head-on. The speed limit in the area is 65 mph.

I have carried a covered shotgun or rifle numerous times in my life into a retail establishment, just because it is stupid to leave a weapon in your vehicle of choice. The risk of theft is just too risky.

But then, I was always taught by my Marine father that if you don’t always have control of your weapon, then you don’t deserve to posses a weapon.

gusty winds from portions of southern Florida and the northwestern
Bahamas northeastward over the adjacent Atlantic waters. Gradual
development is still expected, and the system is likely to become a
tropical or subtropical depression or storm on Saturday while it
passes the northwestern Bahamas and moves north-northeastward over
the Atlantic waters east of Florida. Later in the weekend and early
next week, the system is expected to move generally northeastward

The editor of my regional newspaper goes full-metal wingnut whilst admitting that the press is under attack for being “enemies of the people.”

He almost gets who is actually making those accusations. Almost.

I’ve called him out in E-mail before, and in a letter they actually published in the paper where I directly called him out for being blinded by conservative religion ideology (I’m amazed they printed it).

BRAD STAMAN: Moving forward we must guard our freedoms (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald opinion page).

The column is quite disjointed: He does not establish a single theme and stick to it.

Growing up in the 1970s and ’80s, our biggest fear was the Russians and our own government. With the push of a button, either side could wipe out the world as we knew it with the start and quick end of a nuclear war.

The Russians were the bad guys and our government was the good guys, as long as they didn’t overstep. As long as Uncle Sam kept out of our personal lives, our business and held to the rules of the game, the Constitution including the Bill of Rights, things were good.

Perhaps he lived in a different Seventies and Eighties than I did.

Today, the Russians, aren’t as scary, in fact saying you are a Communist will not get you run out of the country as we ourselves evolve more and more into a socialist county.

Did you forget they still have nukes? They invaded Ukraine in two places? They’re threatening our allies? That we’ve always been a hybrid socialist-capitalist country?

Our enemy, though many would say it is a nasty little bug, is actually ourselves.
[clip]
If we turn to our government for everything, how much of our freedoms are we willing to give up?

BINGO!

You ready to give up that socialist stimulus cheque undermining your freedom? The one I won’t see for another century or so? No? Not willing to put your money where your mouth is?

On Sunday, the church I attend will have its first service together in the building we call our church home since early March. However, how we come together is being guided by the state; in one door, out another, six feet apart, no handshakes, no socializing, etc.

Yes, because the state has to protect anti-science Christians from themselves (and the rest of us).

We have already been taught to be “politically correct” with our speech. Political correctness has died down some, but many still use words like “hate speech” and are willing to outlaw such speech. However, what defines “hate speech?” Or better yet, who will define “hate speech?”

Derp. I dare you, go out and start yelling ni*CLANG at the top of your lungs and find out what hate speech is. How about those “rootless cosmopolitans.” Wanna throw that one out there? Maybe some Yellow Peril while your at it, or some slurs against our Native population?

The press is under attack from the top down. Branded with a scarlet J reporters are called “enemies of the people,” and their work thrown aside as “fake.”

And you almost get it. Almost. Who’s throwing “fake” out there?

Then there is the “peaceably assemble,” which today is not playing out with marches, but in businesses wanting to reopen. However, our Uncle is saying where, when and how many can assemble. In some areas, local governments have closed businesses that dared defy the orders and business owners have even been arrested.

Businesses are not protected under the First Amendment. And the Supreme Court has ruled numerous times when or where people can assemble for all sorts of things. Can I gather up the ten liberals or so in the Panhandle and stage a protest in the office of the Star-Herald in Scottsbluff? No? Why do you hate my freedoms, man?

Are you trying to argue public health orders are unconstitutional? Because you own a small-town newspaper and a whole bunch of courts throughout the entirety of the Republic have disagreed with your opinion.

Freedom is not easy, nor is it always safe, but in our country the freedom to make these decisions are key in who we are as Americans.

Freedom does not equal dipshit or selfish bastard either.

More at the link.

Much to the surprise of pretty much no one….

J.C. Penney, reeling from a one-two punch of the department store industry’s struggles and the coronavirus pandemic, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Friday.

The company, which had racked up an unsustainable amount of debt in recent years, plans to close an unspecified number of stores permanently in a bid to survive bankruptcy. The retailer had 845 stores at the end of 2019, according to real estate data source CoStar Portfolio Strategy.

The bankruptcy filing comes after several years of declining sales and strategic missteps as J.C. Penney careened from one reinvention strategy to another.

Billy Barr Put a Firearms Prosecutor in Charge of Reviewing a Counterintelligence Investigation (goes to emptywheel)

I suppose a firearms prosecutor in theory knows all the laws or knows where to find what’s legal and what’s not. In the same way an ophthalmologist should be able to diagnose pleurisy.

The NYT published a story yesterday that will be very handy for the amicus that Emmet Sullivan appointed in the Mike Flynn case, John Gleeson. It describes two pieces of evidence that St. Louis US Attorney Jeffrey Jensen (whom Barr ordered to conduct a review of Flynn’s prosecution) and Timothy Shea (whose name was on the motion to dismiss asking Sullivan to dismiss the case) failed to account for in their motion.

Most notably, prosecutors interviewed Bill Priestap two days before the motion to dismiss, on May 5. Priestap’s notes have been portrayed by Flynn’s team as proof that the FBI tried to entrap Flynn. In the interview, Priestap disputed the interpretation of the notes that had already been released a week earlier.

Yeah, reading between the lines, it’s obvious that Barr just grabbed a random flunky and asked her to put her name on a report saying that there was nothing illegal in or about Flynn’s phone call. I’m sure he emphasized that he didn’t need her to dig too deep into the whole mess, just do a cursory exam of the evidence on hand and give her opinion on whether or not the FBI had reason to question Flynn.

The White House is flailing. Trump probably senses he’s likely in deep shit and he’ll do anything to distract potential voters.

If the situation gets worse, I imagine they’ll become increasingly frantic and hysterical. Trump knows the only thing keeping him from being indicted in a New York state courtroom is the office of the presidency. And if he loses that, then it’s game over. The other day, I saw Biden saying he would not pardon Trump….which was good to hear; I hope he sticks to that statement*. The criminal justice system needs to be allowed to run its course when it comes to Trump.

* the only way Trump could secure a pardon (if he loses this November) is for him to resign before 20 January 2021 and have Pence (as a caretaker POTUS) issue a blanket pardon while Trump flies off to Mar-a-Lago. BTW, that’s a scenario I could see happening…..Trump as Nixon Mk.II, so to speak.

They’ll try. On the bright side, owing to their colossal incompetence, they’ll fail miserably as they have with virtually everything else.

I think Trump will piss and moan to high heaven if he loses - but then, he’ll call it quits, have caretaker President Pence issue a blanket pardon, hop it to Mar-a-Lago and then use his Florida residency to fight extradition to wherever he may be looking at charges. For Trump, that’s really the easiest way out.

I attended University of Arizona in Tucson, near Davis-Mounthan airbase. I used to watch planes starting and landing all the time.

During the Falklands War, I started noticing a lot more KC-135s, the airborne tanker variant of the 707, passing overhead.

As far as I know there was no US involvement in Black Buck, it was all done with British Victor tankers (which didn’t have the range, so needed refueling themselves). It took 11 Victors to get one Vulcan to the Falklands and back to Ascension.

Given your last paragraph (and various unhelpful US reactions at the time) maybe the KC135’s were refueling the Fuerza Aérea Argentina? //

Donald Trump has been the worst president this country has even had,” he stated. “I don’t say that hyperbolically — he is. But he is a consequential president. He has brought this country, in three short years, to a place of weakness that is simply unimaginable if you are pondering where we are today from the day where Barack Obama left office.”

This is a moment of unparalleled national humiliation, of weakness when you listen to the president,” he continued. “There are the musing of an imbecile, an idiot. And I don’t use those words to name-call, I use them because they are the precise words in the English language to describe his behavior, his comportment, his actions. We’ve never seen a level of incompetence, a level of ineptitude so staggering on a daily basis from anybody on the history of the country

5) External firm comes in and talks to internal source since they are the experts on the local conditions.
6) External firm essentially reports same as #2, collects their money, and goes home. Possibly after also making recommendations that might get them, or a related contracting firm, some additional business.

Which still doesn’t protect him from New York State.

Charlie Pierce sent out something this morning that hit me as being exactly right:

Recently, in trying to get a grip on what the context of the upcoming national election might be, I came upon a psychological phenomenon called “derealization,” a dissociative disorder the symptoms of which include:

• Distorted perception of time, space, and size of things around you.
• Feeling of unreality from the world around you, as if in a dream or trance.
• Feeling as if everything is foggy, fuzzy, or warped.
• Sense of being disconnected from those around you as if you’re trapped in a bubble.
• Thoughts of going crazy or being very ill.

Well, more than that was exactly right, but this hit the bullseye as far as I can see, both literally now and “for as far as I can see.” Pardon if the grammar is not up to post-coffee standards.

Former National Security Officials: the “unmasking” list could be bad news for Mike Flynn
“This is a long list of names of people across disparate areas of government who independently felt” incidents involving Flynn were problematic, said one former official.
by Abigail Tracy, Vanity Fair

Former FBI counterintelligence agent Asha Rangappa posits that to the contrary of the Trumpian line, the volume of unmasking requests related to Flynn’s behavior, is a bad look for him—not the Obama administration. “This does not help Flynn,” she told me. “This is a long list of names of people across disparate areas of government who independently felt that the intelligence reports they were reading were so alarming that they needed to know—without knowing, by the way, who it was beforehand—[who] the person was that was engaging in that communication or activity.” Driving this point home, Rangappa asked of Grenell, “Why not go ahead and disclose the underlying intelligence report?” In other words, if the Trumpian line of attack is that these Obama officials were acting inappropriately and without cause, make that case. Of course, conspiracy theories don’t thrive in context. And transparency has never been the currency of Trumpworld; details be damned.

112
retired cynic  May 16, 2020 • 7:22:08am

re: #111 retired cynic

The ending:

But Barr and Grenell effectively struck two pieces of flint together to create smoke, if not fire. Devoid of context or explanation, the unmasking list is already being deployed by allies of the president to paint Flynn as a victim of Trump’s political enemies. And the motion to dismiss the charges against Flynn—never mind his guilty plea—buttresses the narrative that the Russia investigation was a hoax; the charges were trumped up from the start. And Trump’s allies continue to say the quiet part out loud. Two campaign officials told the Washington Post that the effort is designed to tarnish the president’s top rival, Biden, and Obama, the former vice president’s top surrogate. And the president’s congressional allies haven’t even attempted to hide their hands from the public. “We sort of have the smoking gun because we now have the declassified document with Joe Biden’s name on it,” Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky said.

Doss reiterated to me, “On its face there’s nothing in that list that suggests anything improper was done.” For Trump, however, that is not the point.

I was remembering it incorrectly. Still no coffee. Still feeding critters but had to sit down. The bluebird was in the trees, but down on a branch where I could see it clearly from the porch. There is a bluebird nest I put up years ago, but it hasn’t been used before. Maybe this is the year!

Bird crowds are beginning to scale down on the thistle seed, and so it is time to put out some of the dried critters. I find it SO hard to keep the raccoons out of the peanut butter/suet bars. They come out during broad daylight and claw them down, no matter if I grease the pole or not. We have been doing weekly patches on the feed shed, as they have chewed their way in through the roof (patched, then replaced), and then under the eaves (blocked), and finally (I hope), under the door — patched. And the squirrels have chewed under eave holes and are romping in the attic. The skunk and the ground hog are becoming more bold by the day. Good thing I enjoy the wild critters, ‘cuz I sure have ‘em.

Every nominee will be attacked for being chosen only because they are a woman. And each one of the potential candidates will be further attacked for some special thing: Harris because she’s black, etc. I refuse to do anything but be angry at the people doing the attacking. I will not give into “Oh, but what about this?” And Duckworth can take care of herself.

Yep they’re going to find fault with whoever. My first choice is Harris for VP but there’s a lot of great women being considered and I’m glad Duckworth is one of them. We shouldn’t be afraid. This is a referendum on Trump and Pence.

Had something like that. They tore it down, broke it, and ate the goodies. Got another. They tore it down and took it into the woods and I never found it. Starting hanging them and bringing them in as soon as the birds were done in early evening. So the raccoons started going after them in daylight. And those slabs aren’t cheap!

Still, I’ll see about getting that, and giving it a try. Maybe it’s stout enough to deter the beasts!

True Trumpsters — which include now almost the entire GOP presence in the House and Senate — see Fauci as a villain. On FB, memes and videos demonize him on a regular basis. The infamous Plandemic (which I never viewed) certainly portrays him as such. If you don’t worship and praise Trump or if you dare to contradict him, you must be destroyed regardless of anything meritorious in your history.

From 2017: The Enablers, by Sarah Ellison in Vanity Fair.

Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Mike Pence, John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Reince Priebus. Gives examples of each showing their disdain and horror of DJT, and then going along, for power.

Donald Trump will suffer his own grim fate in the eyes of historians, but it will come with an asterisk: he is a profoundly damaged human being with no true understanding of his capacities, his emotions, his ignorance, his job, or the fundamentals of human decency.

His enablers will get no asterisk. They will be treated with the special contempt reserved for those who acted knowingly and cravenly, with eyes wide open.

There were some anti-lockdown protests in Hyde Park, London. (There was similar in Glasgow, but only a handful of people.)

And the result of these protests in London? Currently trending on UK Twitter: “I AM A FREE” and “I AM NOT MAN”- based on this protestor’s sign.

If you don’t know, this sign is meant to be a reference to a famous line from the 1960s allegorical TV drama “The Prisoner”. Only done in the wrong order. And further messed up by inept typographical skills. It should read “I am not a number, I’m a free man!”. (2:49 into this clip.)

Indeed, I think if he loses, he immediately goes to Mar-A-Lago to spite Biden. Which means that Biden will have no assistance in making a transition and will have to wing it as he goes. Sure, Uncle Joe will have more help than anyone in getting started. Meanwhile, Trump underslings will also scatter to the four winds, knowing that as of January 20, whatever immunity they may have will be gone, and they need to get legal assistance or qualify for a federal pension, being unemployable in the real world.

Go in there and get the White House stewards to count and track the silverware. Trump flunkies will steal anything that isn’t nailed down and probably try to pawn it.

Trump will leave Pence holding the bag for the rest of what’s left of his term. He doesn’t care about Pence, nor trust him either, which is why there won’t be a pardon offered. He’s accept one, but he’d rather pardon himself than that. He considers Pence a patsy at best, a flunky at worst.

Indeed, Pence is going to be the tragic figure in all of this. He would have been better off just resigning as Governor of Indiana He’s never going to be President, be elected to the Senate, or nominated for President. If he had resigned as Governor and just sat it out, he might have some role to play in a post-Trump Republican Party. He will leave with nothing, not even book offers or a media position. Nobody cares what he has to say about anything, or sees him as a future leader.

That’s why they are drawing money from the re-election fund for condos and luxury goods, spending more time trying to sell Trump tschotkes than trying to make an affirmative case for Trump’s re-election (before the pandemic, there was a weak case).

White Supremacists Built a Website to Doxx Interracial Couples — and It’s Going to Be Hard to Take Down (Vice, long article)

TL;DR, the Website seeks to find as many interracial couples as possible where a white woman is married to a non-white man, then harass the woman (on- or off-line).

The were kicked off several providers, until they moved to a service in Russia.

Security service Cloudflare (which provides protection against such things as DDOS attacks and provides their service) refuses to withdraw their service, citing libertarian free speech principles.

Cloudflare did kick the white supremacists off from the Charlottesville rally, but only after Heather Heyer was murdered. (They’d received many complaints as they were organising their hate-rally.) They also kicked off Stormfront after reporting showed many murders attached to that site.

There’s not much that can be done with the Russian service, but the only way Cloudflare is going to straighten up is if people boycott them and use other services. We already know that won’t happen, even murder is not enough to get people to quit using Cloudflare.

It’s going to be interesting to watch the infighting in the GOP after Trump. They still refuse to acknowledge the nation’s changing demographics. That’s why Biden will be competitive in Texas. And if Texas turns so much as purple I think the GOP should worry greatly about their long term prospects. The Trump Years aren’t going to be fondly looked back at.

Why do you think so many people who hav to have certain and expensive medications on a regular basis make trips to Canada? It is the same medication but a heck of a lot cheaper.

There was a program sponsored by the state of MN back around 2003 that allowed us (I can’t remember if it was just state employees or everyone) to order drugs from Canada through the mail. I sent in my order, and about a month later I got a letter from the Dept. of Homeland Security telling me that my meds had been seized at the border as illegal.

I talked with the state people in charge of the program. They were surprised and suggested that I just order them again through the program.

They were seized again and this time I got a letter from DHS much quicker than the first one, which implied to me that the DHS now had a file of my activities already in place. I never got resolution on why the program was working for some but not for me.

The tighter the corner Trump is pressed into, the more extreme the reaction is going to be.

I mentioned earlier that if current trends continue, the GOP just might see it in their interest to derail the entire electoral process and turn it into such a clusterfuck full of irregularities and claims of fraud and manipulation that it produces no verifiable results, at which point they can claim victory.

Could be some sort of weird name resolution issue. If you open a command prompt(windows) or terminal session(OSX) and ping pokerstars.com does it resolve to an ip address? If not you may want to try hard coding your dns to something like 8.8.8.8(googles public dns). If it does resolve to an ip but just can’t reach that address then it may be a routing issue with your isp which unfortunately not much you can do about. Possibly using a vpn solution like expressvpn or ipvanish would route you around it. I’d say check your AV to see if it is blocking anything, but if it works on your hotspot, that likely has nothing to do with it.

Also could just try rebooting your router.

Stunning Poll: Almost Half of All Americans Think God Will Protect Them From Getting Coronavirus Mediatite)

A stunningly high percentage of Americans say that they believe God will protect them from contracting the coronavirus, according to a new poll.

In a new survey conducted by University of Chicago Divinity School and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, an overwhelming majority of 82 percent of Americans said that they believe in God, and of those believers, large majorities said that the coronavirus pandemic is a message from God, and that God will protect them at least “somewhat” from the disease.

That majority is 55%. While Evangelicals are overwhelmingly convinced of this, all Christian faiths have large percentages which believe the same.

Keeps me convinced my atheist butt should stay away from Christians until this passes.

there really is no contesting “the outcome”
that’s like the 30th step

for any ‘result’ to flip, there has to be an evidence based, substantive argument of irregularity made at a county or precinct level

and it has to be in a precinct where the contested result is so close that a challenge could flip it

and there have to be enough of those successful challenges to then flip an entire state that was already razor thin (yes razor thin did happen in ‘16)

and for that to work the EC vote has to be razor thin already as well

theoretical? ok maybe
possible? not really
likely. no

the R’s dont control enough precincts and states to bury enough votes (ie absentees)

could the votes be hacked electronically? absolutely.
that’s different than contesting the result / outcome.

About 30 yards apart both parties pretending the other wasnt there
(We were there first)

During Joint Task Force Andrew, I accidentally videobombed President GHW Bush and candidate Bill Clinton. (On the same day, I think.) I had shit to do and they were there to fuck up our air traffic plan with their VIP flights.

The kids did get to see me on the TV, though.

He was worried about the real voice of the Libertarian Party getting nominated, a nugget of gold high on cocaine and with an AR. Or maybe Trumpvis pardoning Joe Exotic after all. And btw the Greens are expected to struggle getting on the ballot in a few key states.

Rando comment

As long as the republicans hold power in Wisconsin or anywhere else, the pandemic will continue far beyond the point where it might have been effectively tamped down had there not been bald faced, weaponized resistance to the only strategies that have proven effective in mitigating the rapid spread of the virus; strategies that have been repeatedly endorsed and emphasized by Trump’s own pandemic response team.

The republican party is the party of death

re: #172 Barefoot Grin

I turned a corner at University of Illinois-Chicago in a hallway leading to my sister’s graduation for masters in social work and this big dude coming the other way almost ran me over. He smiled and apologized. Later, in the ceremony I turned around to see that he was just sitting behind me. My sister asked, “did you see Phil Jackson sitting behind you?” I didn’t know who that was. Anyway, Phil’s wife was my sister’s classmate and got her degree at the same time.

My late husband and I were dining at a small restaurant in a strip mall on Elm Place in Highland Park and Phil Jackson was seated at a nearby table. My sister saw Rodman in bathrobe and slippers at Bakers Square in Deerfield, near the Berto Center where the Bulls practiced.

A Christian is speaking to the nation to inspire graduates who are having to deal with a world no one could imagine a year ago and they are letting their hate show.

One of the stories I remember reading a little while ago was when DT went to pick up Jr and found him drunk. DT slapped Jr and told him to get a suit on and get down to the limo. In my view that is one of many things that helped me choose HRC.

The question I have, for myself as well as others, is do I let the retro-atavists alone on my Facebook timeline, or do I interact with them.

I finally decided that I should intermittently interact with them.

Some have unfriended me in the Trump era. Some have not.
