Colbert From Home: Dictator Fanboy Donald Trump Gets His Wish as Military Vehicles Roll Down the Streets of Washington

The President’s use of military tactics against peaceful demonstrators is worrisome in so many ways, not least of which is the message it sends to local police departments, urging confrontation and domination instead of de-escalation. #Colbert #StephenAtHome #Monologue

I’ll be honest here. I really think a lot of people underestimated Biden as being the best to beat Trump. He wasn’t my first choice but with the way things turned out, I’m happy that he’s our nominee. Because it’s not just Joe. It’s about who he will have on his team and it’s whose opinions he will value too.

Abso-friggin’-lutely. One of the big flaws with this year’s Dem primary race was (IMO) the obsession with personalities (and the BernieBro cult, but I digress), and the pigeonholing of ideological issue-flogging.There was a studied ignoring of political process and partisan structure in how the governing of this country actually operates. By everybody but Joe Biden, who has spent his life studying and operating within those structures. A huge flaw and drawback for the “revolutionaries”, who can only see “politics as usual” and tend to fall - in mirror-image of the Trumpsters- into Great Man idealizations; but (as it has turned out) what I hope will be a tremendous asset in managing post-Trump America.
Will a President Joe Biden fight hammer-and-tongs for a left-wing agenda? Probably certainly not. Will a President Biden stand in the way of (discourage/obstruct/veto) any progressive legislation a D Congress might send him? Probably not, either: and the latter
- the way things are supposed to work in the US - is probably about as best as we are going to able to do.
Still a VAST improvement over the Incompetence Fascism of Trump and the GOP.

re: #661 KGxvi

It is much more interesting. I’m also not surprised that farmers as business owners make more than the median worker. That’s pretty much the way it goes in any industry. Partners at big firms make more than their associates, partners at small firms make more than their associates (and often times, more than the associates at big firms).

The history of how the land and wealth were acquired is despicable, to say the least. The question is, how do we change things for the better? I’m not sure “creating a whole bunch of much smaller farmers” is necessarily the best answer - could we even treat farmers as monopolies? And if we did,how would we break them up?

A very big part of the problem seems to be the over reliance on corn. That is probably something we should address by reducing corn subsidies and promoting diversification of production.

No amount of fencing is going to give Trump what he wants. I wouldn’t be surprised that, within the next few weeks, Trump simply relocates to Mar-a-lago. He talks about it as the Southern White House. I could see him making some sort of proclamation that makes it “official” and scampers off to FL.

I used to like him too; I started reading him well after he turned against the war and enjoyed reading him during the Obama years. But he was a terrible person in the 90’s when he promoted the racist text “The Bell Curve”. It was not until he abandoned his blog that I realized that, despite his fondness for Obama, he retained his elitist and racist views.

I think I first came across him in the mid/late 90s in the early days of Hardball, and probably started reading his blog sometime around 2000. Back then, he was willing/able to engage with his readers - we even traded emails a few times, and he posted a few of my emails along the way. I think he was right when he “retired” from blogging a few years ago - paying that much attention to that much stuff can break your brain.

So the last paragraph from the NY Times Morning News article “Trump’s Rough Patch”, delivered to my IPhone, written by David Leonhardt, states:

There are still almost five months until Election Day. A lot can change in that time. And Trump is a talented politician, with an unusual ability to shape the national debate. Right now, though, he is struggling.

It is so infuriating that they refuse to see their pivotal role in allowing this to happen. It is the MSM who created him and eagerly let him dominate them, with their despicable handling of the 2016 campaign — their willingness to pound Hillary with her emails while overlooking and ignoring his substantial flaws. And now they are trying to do this again in the 2020 election. Shame on you, NY Times. And shame on you for publishing Cotton’s outrageous column.

I liked him for a while too because he was a gay activist. I even bought a book he wrote defending same-sex marriage. Then I couldn’t finish the book because it was uninteresting as hell with strange logic. Then I found out he was continuing to have unprotected sex after becoming hiv positive. Then he spent a week posting stories from women about their needed abortions and decided at the end of the week that they should still not be legal. Then there were a million other reasons. He’s a self-centered dick.

Perfectly consistent — students shouldn’t be concerned about school shootings and we shouldn’t be concerned about police brutality and police murdering civilians and we shouldn’t be worried about minority workers who are dying from Covid 19 because they were forced to work for our comfort. He took his time and checked everything even my shopping list. He was about to ask for a price lookup when he realized it was a cell phone battery with a post-it note on it. At least I got my items and a basket discount (I accumulated enough points) and went home. The paper products are coming back slowly and Lysol spray is not there. Yeah meanwhile Q continues with the Democrats torturing “mole children” for their adrenochrome. Not one peep about the caged kids from Q. Not one peep.

A documentary on Swedish public service TV, “Att rädda ett barn” (“Saving a child”) is making the waves on this side of the pond. Long story short, a mother lost custody after totally unfounded allegations about pedophilia against the father. In the last of the three parts of the docu, Q-esque individuals make an entrance, alleging a worldwide pedophile conspiracy, pedophiles having infiltrated the top echelons of society, you know the drill…
Anyways, an organization to look out for as they spread that crap:

Drew Brees has apologized for his commnets from the interview yesterday.

Drew Brees: ‘Completely missed the mark’ in comments on flag

In an Instagram post Thursday, Brees said he was apologizing to his friends, teammates, New Orleans, the black community, the NFL community and “anyone I hurt with my comments yesterday.”

“In an attempt to talk about respect, unity, and solidarity centered around the American flag and the national anthem, I made comments that were insensitive and completely missed the mark on the issues we are facing right now as a country,” Brees wrote. “They lacked awareness and any type of compassion or empathy. Instead, those words have become divisive and hurtful and have misled people into believing that somehow I am an enemy. This could not be further from the truth, and is not an accurate reflection of my heart or my character.”

None of the other coaches are doing it but they’re retweeting him everywhere.

His Twitter account is his but it has the name of his school and program all over it. Well, he got an email from his principal telling him he could not be political on a school account. He told her it’s a personal account, he will take nothing down, stop posting, or in any way back down. He told me, “She can take it to HR. I don’t give a fuck. It stays.”

He just got a call from her. “I didn’t realize it’s a personal account that happens to be full of references to the school. Now I can tell parents to shut up. You have the right to say anything you want on a personal account. Just don’t speak on behalf of the school. People are going nuts.”

Not only that, but it directly put a lot of black NYT employees, journos, columnists, etc. at risk, by not just approving of, but demanding an escalation of the kind of heavy handed police and military presence that’s already seeing countless numbers of journalists covering the protests in harms way, as well as at risk of death, not even counting the civilian protestors that will be violently suppressed at all.

It’s using the argument of free speech to promote a screed demanding the absolute suppression of free speech, among other constitutional violations. And if you take AG Sulzberger’s word on it, they explicitly endorse editorials by editing and publishing them. They’re openly defending the piece as’ “accurate” and ”good faith”.

That’s what was so maddening about his comments yesterday. Historically, Brees was pretty upfront with his support regarding civil rights and was fully supportive of his teammates taking a knee in protest of police brutality.

As has been said before, a decade of goodwill can be ruined by a single senseless statement, and he very likely lost a lot of support from a city that embraced him, which will take significant time to rebuild.

I’m hoping that his teammates have a good talk with him. I don’t think he’s an awful person but I do think he showed he was very tone deaf and I hope for his sake he can learn that this was never about the military at all and it really came off clueless of him to pull that stuff.

Read the whole post. He took full ownership of it.

Brees concluded his post by expressing his dismay over how his words have affected people.

“I am sick about the way my comments were perceived yesterday, but I take full responsibility and accountability,” Brees wrote. “I recognize that I should do less talking and more listening … and when the black community is talking about their pain, we all need to listen.

“For that, I am very sorry and I ask your forgiveness.”

….”5. Bull Connor 2.0

Barr and his jowls. Mean lying cuss. Sheltering in place behind a G-d we are sure will not want him. He is playing Bull Connor for the camera. Tom Cotton is the new John C. Calhoun. 45 is Nixon in 68. How much reading do you have to do on your way to the protest to understand this hellish moment?

I am watching them hurt Washingtonians-I am screaming at the TV. 45 comes out. Gold Glory and G-dless. A TV ad shoots up the next day-crisp and clean, a totalitarian fantasy.

The sisters text me and write me-they know I am prey. They are too-but I can’t say that-I vow to die a martyr before they are disrespected. The brothers call. We want to go to war but we are past our warrior days but not quiet aged.

The white and non-Black friends call and text-they worry that I may be in my own bunker, the walls closing in.

I don’t know what to say really-so I wrote this.”

God, my dad was like that. I miss him, but he generally apologized only to smooth things over. Never was really about any introspective review of what he actually said.

And to ping off of my white privilege comment above: Fucking Brees lives with black teammates for four months a year, a good chunk of whom most likely have had some sort of shitty encounters with cops.

The hubris and privilege it takes to shit on why Kapernick was protesting and not expect blowback is breathtaking.

Murkowski is just doing her usual fence straddling. She’s “safe” for 4 more years.

AK Sen Dan Sullivan (R-Trump) is the one up for re-election. I think he can be beat since he is really stuck kissing trump’s patootie. If the Lincoln Project could throw a couple of ads up here about 1-2 weeks before the election he could be beat.

Alaska is considered an R state but in reality the voters are 1/3 D, 1/3 R, an 1/3 independent or not declared. Sullivan did replace a D (Begich) 5 years ago, so D’s can win up here.

No preference yet. In the House race it looks like:

Incumbent US Rep. Don Young has two Republican primary challengers, and three people have registered for the Democratic primary, including nonpartisan candidate Alyse Galvin, who lost to Young in the 2018 general election.

This is a tough race to predict. Everyone knows Young is worthless in the House but they still vote for him. Maybe the overall built-up anger over the R’s in general will lead to his demise.

Every Receipt Proving Candace Owens Is A Con Artist Who Is Following The Money

Owens now calls the NAACP “one of the worst groups for Black people,” even though the organization helped her win a racial discrimination lawsuit. In 2007, she accused some white boys of racially harassing and threatening to kill her. Owens claimed the boys were the son of then-Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy, Connecticut’s former governor. Because of the NAACP, Owens’ family received a settlement of $37,500 from Stamford Public Schools.

She’s just like every other conservative out there that uses race politics. She’s “anti identity politics” until it’s her. This isn’t someone like Michael Steele or Condi Rice who has different political views than most of their fellow African Americans. This is a grifting, Nazi apologist who says the worst things about other African Americans to make her white audience feel they’re not racist.

The flag is less important than what it means. We’re of course proud of my cousin who seventy five years ago helped put the American flag on Iwo Jima but it’s pride in how he, a man not born in the US and scarred by previous combat experiences led Marines in one of the bloodiest battles in history.

I know they are as meaningful as total yards in a football game, but I just looked up the national polling for the presidential election. I was unaware until now that with the exception of 2 polls listed, Trump has never led Biden nationally in 2020. In fact, if you go back to November 2019, there’s only four polls in which Trump leads nationally. And only a handful of times does he get above 45%.

I think the only people Trump has ever “trusted” are family. Because he knows, running a family business (as shady as it is), that they know their fortunes are tied to him. The Trump brand has been about Donald since at least the early 80s when he forced his way into the New York tabloid scene.

Hillary consistently led Trump. It doesn’t mean anything significant, given the Electoral College and how early it is in the campaign. Remember the MSM will pull out all the stops to defeat Biden. Remember, technically a candidate could win 65% of the popular vote and still lose the election, even with voter suppression.

re: #9 FormerDirtDart 🍕🐀 No Capt’n😷Trips

I saw the video when it was hitting Twitter a couple weeks ago, and my gut reaction was this looked like a hillbilly hunting video. Three dumb fucks, all pumped up with guns and testosterone, chased this unarmed kid, actually drove him to a spot, where the pickup truck was waiting to corner him and shoot him. It’s no different than a dog flushes birds out in the open, to be shot. All they were missing was bellowing hounds and a tree for him to run and hide in (“treed”).

I think the kid thought flight wasn’t working, so he made his last stand, and those greasy fucks shot him. He was obviously trying to run until he couldn’t run any more, up to that point.

And their buddy that was flushing the kid out in the open of course videoed the whole thing, just like a stupid deer hunt or bass fishing episode for some stupidass show that airs commercials for Protect the Harvest and every other backasswards right wing cause.

This is what klukkers jerk off to. It was a snuff film.

Damn. Too bad he couldn’t find his spine in February.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) blasted senators on the Judiciary Committee on Thursday for what he said was “grandstanding for the cameras” at a hearing to review former special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

“It’s bullshit the way people grandstand for cameras in here,” Sasse told the committee. “The reality is if we didn’t have cameras in this room, the discussion would be different. The Senate doesn’t work. It doesn’t diffuse the partisan tensions that are leading the country toward dissolution.”

“Ninety percent of our committees are about people trolling for soundbites,” the senator added. “That’s what actually happens. Some of us have other work to do. People can troll for soundbites whenever they want.” Video at Raw Story

I’m using a half bottle of hand sanitizer that expired in 2015 that I spiked with some 91% iso alchohol that expired in 2016. I shouldn’t try to answer your question.

DeBlasio is disorganized, inefficient, often late to meetings and ceremonies. 355
lawhawk  Jun 4, 2020 • 3:14:25pm

re: #351 sagehen

It’s a bit more complicated than that. NYC doesn’t have home rule to do a lot of things, despite being 40% of the population and far more than that as far as the state’s economy goes. Cuomo controls the MTA, which means transit falls to Cuomo, as does the Port Authority (which controls the airports and a bunch of bridges and tunnels to/from NJ into NYC). If Cuomo doesn’t want transit projects, it throttles what the city can do, especially around subways. DeBlasio set out to do universal pre-k and ending stop and frisk, and he did those, but has been mediocre at best beyond that.

Before covid19, Cuomo was mediocre as well, but better than DeBlasio. Since, DeBlasio has been even worse and Cuomo occasionally shows that he’s got authoritarian instincts too.

And the protests/riots reveal once again that Cuomo isn’t above pandering to the cops and the police unions, instead of trying to get rid of bad cops, bad laws, and improving the situation but he’s much better at triangulating than DeBlasio, who I always thought was a poor choice for mayor and a single issue guy.

And to all of that, one has to add the traditional rivalry between the NYC political structures and the NYS ones - the City is dependent on the State for both revenue and political cooperation on a lot of shit, and Andy Cuomo definitely has ideas as to who the top Democrat in the state ought to be. Plus, as a kicker, DeBlasio didn’t kiss the NYPD’s blue ass strongly enough from the get-go, and they’ve given him the Lindsay/Dinkins treatment.
Fundamentally, the guy has turned out to be a lackluster and ineffective Executive. And the pandemic/recession/unrest has just magnified this.

Except, for whatever reason, Mike Bloomberg. He managed to serve three terms (the last undeservedly, but never mind) without generating the enormous ill-will De Blasio seems to have. It sucks, but there isn’t much you can do. It’s her dog and if she wants it back, barring evidence of abuse, you can’t really deny her.

Does the video with her choking it, on top of her postings of all the other “accidents” the dog has had since she adopted it count?

Great speech. Thanks for posting that.

This is the image I use in my class to drive home the point of the deliberate nature of lynching and how it was used for social control.

Except, for whatever reason, Mike Bloomberg. He managed to serve three terms (the last undeservedly, but never mind) without generating the enormous ill-will De Blasio seems to have. Of course, being richer than fuck certainly didn’t hurt (since he wasn’t beholden to anyone) - but while nobody liked him much, nobody really hated him much either.
Which, in NYC is about as positive as you’re gonna get……

Bloomberg was. widely criticized for overly aggressive policing at the 2004 RNC, and for stop-and-frisk.

But as counterweight, his 10-year-plan to turn every inch of waterfront into public parks, and expand programming at the parks, plus bike lanes and making buildings more energy efficient, and his impeccable handling of hurricane Sandy and several blizzards and increasing city income tax and property tax… liberals have plenty to like about him too.

The flag is less important than what it means. We’re of course proud of my cousin who seventy five years ago helped put the American flag on Iwo Jima but it’s pride in how he, a man not born in the US and scarred by previous combat experiences led Marines in one of the bloodiest battles in history.

This is pretty much my take about the flag:

How to revive the rural economy—breaking up the huge agribusinesses—is something I have thought about as well. Two things that I think would help is universal income and rural broadband.

Basically, we need more people earning a living in the country. It’s not that there aren’t people who want to live in the middle of nowhere, it’s that they can’t—the jobs aren’t there. The commute is ridiculous and wfh isn’t an option, because the internet is impossibly slow, assuming that it is available. Internet in the country, more people in the country, more service jobs in the country.

The reason that the small family farms are becoming rarer is because it it hard to risk your family’s well being on the vagaries of the weather and the markets. Larger farms/companies have more assets that they can use to smooth out downturns. If a farmer did not have to worry that a drought would mean the kids didn’t have clothes for school in the fall, they could stay small.

Medicare for all would also help, just not as much as the other two, imho. The family would not lose the farm (probably to a corporation) because someone became ill.
