gotta say I’m am increasingly tired of this media double-standard. A Dem announces a game plan to deal with a problem, hey, you have to show your work (and to be honest, I’m okay with that) and let people examine it and ask questions and chew on it in public…
A GOP statement, never receives the same scrutiny and all statements are initially accepted at face face as if we haven’t experienced DECADES of bad faith, hairsplitting, context free bullshit being trotted out that falls apart like decayed doilies at the briefest of skeptical glances and yet, the lie gets publicized first, scrutiny free and it’s up to the Dems to do all the work showing that its more empty platitudes and policy by fairy dust.
Trump says he’s been tested… the show the results, he says his docs has signed off and we get a letter with no signature… and we’re gish-galloped into the next lie into the queue.
Sorry Cheeto, you pulled out, so we made alternate plans. No flip flops, no do-overs.

The “Deal Maker” has not figured out that he’s negotiating with himself…and losing.
Biden doesn’t need another debate, but Trump needs it badly and it shows. So his long-favored tactic of threatening to get up and leave the table unless he gets what he wants on his terms is not going to work this time. The Commission actually showing a spine for once and refusing to compromise people’s health in face of Trump temper-tantrum has left him with no leverage.
Hence why they’re trying this cheesy-as-fuck “BIDEN’S AFRAID TO DEBATE!!!” attack, which nobody but the rubes are buying by this point. Biden’s made clear that he’s willing to debate next week, but it will not be in-person or even in the same zip code. Donny’s efforts to try to spin this as a refusal to debate on Biden’s part are fucking pathetic.

Some good info here from The Economist - they’re looking at excess deaths in countries where the COVID-19 pandemic has hit:
This is an interesting little tidbit:
Outside western Europe and the Americas, only a handful of places release data about excess deaths. No such information exists for large swathes of Africa and Asia, where most civil registries only produce annual statistics after a considerable delay, and certificates for many deaths are never issued at all. Among countries where we have found national data on excess deaths, the biggest difference from official statistics has been in Russia—which recorded about 83,000 more fatalities than usual between April and July, compared with an official covid-19 toll of 14,000.
Yikes.

It’s pretty clear by now that the “October Surprise” that he was hoping Barr would deliver was announcing that Biden was either under criminal investigation or even that he was being indicted for criminal acts while he was VP. It wouldn’t matter that the investigation was going nowhere or that the charges would never stick, all he wanted was a repeat of the Comey letter that (he hoped) would do enough damage to help him make up the difference at the polls.

Security flaw left ‘smart’ chastity sex toy users at risk of permanent lock-in (Goes to Tech Crunch)
U.K.-based security firm Pen Test Partners said the flaw in the Qiui Cellmate internet-connected chastity lock, billed as the “world’s first app controlled chastity device,” could have allowed anyone to remotely and permanently lock in the user’s penis.
The Cellmate chastity lock works by allowing a trusted partner to remotely lock and unlock the chamber over Bluetooth using a mobile app. That app communicates with the lock using an API. But that API was left open and without a password, allowing anyone to take complete control of any user’s device.
Because the chamber was designed to lock with a metal ring underneath the user’s penis, the researchers said it may require the intervention of a heavy-duty bolt cutter or an angle grinder to free the user.

The thing that keeps killing me about these sorts of stories is how easy it is to do basic security these days. Like, seriously, it’s built in as a feature on literally every modern software framework. Maybe in the olden days, before OAuth2 standardization, there were excuses for being lazy, but nowadays you have to basically try to make things insecure. No excuses - I will continue to hold shoddy software firms to account for these failures.

The Grand Old Party’s position of power has relied on the majority of old white men. They are no longer the voting majority.
If I had supported him over The Wall, I would also be disappointed at what a poor job he has done on it so far. No planning commission, no design studies, no legal or environmental impact statements, no proposed budget or timetable.

My dad is a wingnut now. Ridiculously so. His parents were both staunch union members. My grandma was one of the first women to be a union steward at Anchor Hocking In Lancaster, OH. Dad worked for US Steel when I was a little kid until he was laid off about the time the auto industry began closing plants across OH and the rest of the Rust Belt. This was early in that process, it started slow and then spread like wildfire a few years later. That job bought my parents their first house, nice cars and the ability to be upwardly mobile. He hates unions now and thinks AARP is a liberal commie group. He’s got a reverse mortgage on the new huge house they bought a couple years ago, and my parents think Glenn Beck is a reliable source of news. I never understood their need to have a 4 or 5 bedroom house when no one but them lives there. Let’s just say that even if I had a relationship with my parents(we haven’t spoken in a year), there is no inheritance coming my way.
It was a few years after dad lost that union job that he started with the Amway/end times Christianity/ vote Republican crap that screwed my family up more than it was to start with.

Disclosures for Public Health Activities (Goes to the Department of Health and Human Services)
Background
The HIPAA Privacy Rule recognizes the legitimate need for public health authorities and others responsible for ensuring public health and safety to have access to protected health information to carry out their public health mission. The Rule also recognizes that public health reports made by covered entities are an important means of identifying threats to the health and safety of the public at large, as well as individuals. Accordingly, the Rule permits covered entities to disclose protected health information without authorization for specified public health purposes.

Chastity belts for men or women are way more expensive as well. Inexpensive ones are north of $200, usually in fixed sizes (therefore they don’t fit well).
Like corsets, chastity belts need to be measured and fitted for the individual for wear longer than a few minutes for fun times, which means lots of money.

On a lighter note, an article in today’s local paper was about towns in NH struggling with lawbreakers who put political signs high up on utility poles. Of course, dig into the article and it is exlusively Trump/Pence signs. It is Barr who has been working overtime to get him dictatorial powers, because Barr has always believed there are no limits on Republican executives. And another Trump term will guarantee that everyone working in the DOJ is dedicated to the same objective. I have to believe that the only reason Barr has failed to issue an official report charging Obama, Biden, Hillary, etc. with crimes is that the Durham team still has sufficient adherence to the rule of law that they believe they need real evidence before officially making such allegations. Dr. Conley knows Trump has a highly contagious potentially lethal disease. How could he state that Trump is sufficiently healthy to resume rallies this weekend without losing his medical license?
One internet source medical.mit.edu states:
the CDC recommends that you remain isolated for at least 10 days after your symptoms first appeared AND at least three days (72 hours) after recovery.
What does “recovery” mean? According to the CDC, it means that you’ve gone three days without a fever, and without the use of fever-reducing medications, and that your other symptoms, such as cough or shortness of breath, have shown progressive improvement or have gone away completely. In other words, if you’re fever free and improving for two days but start running a fever again or coughing more, that 72-hour countdown clock gets reset, and you’ll need to start counting down those three days again as soon as you’re once more fever free and otherwise improving.
According to another source health.harvard.edu.:
Most people with coronavirus who have symptoms will no longer be contagious by 10 days after symptoms resolve. People who test positive for the virus but never develop symptoms over the following 10 days after testing are probably no longer contagious, but again there are documented exceptions. So some experts are still recommending 14 days of isolation.
There is no way that Trump meets either of those criteria to safely resume in-person rallies this weekend.

Entirely predictable. We knew Russia and other authoritarian countries would try to suppress the counts of those dying from covid19, but excess mortality doesn’t lie. You count the bodies, compare to prior years, and the difference is what is the pandemic wrought.
We’ve got excess mortality in the US that pushes the death toll from covid19 to above 250,000, when we’re looking at an official death toll of about 216,000. We have GOP governors who’ve tried to suppress the death toll to claim that they did a better job of handling the pandemic than Democrats, but they can’t hide the numbers dying overall.

On a lighter note, an article in today’s local paper was about towns in NH struggling with lawbreakers who put political signs high up on utility poles. Of course, dig into the article and it is exlusively Trump/Pence signs. Towns don’t want to take them down, they say, for fear of favoritism and because the poles belong to Eversource power and Consolidated communications. The companies don’t want to spend money sending crews all over the place. Either way, it is against the law. But as usual in the age of Trump, because no one will do anything about it, they just proliferate.
Can’t someone just shoot them down? It’s NH.

Pete’s in a sorta hard spot for a next career step. Maybe he can leverage up into a House seat, but it’s somewhat hard for a D in Indiana. Very little chance for Gov or Senate. But I really don’t want him going for Prez without real experience at the national level.

That’s the thing I’ve learned about leadership. A real leader is bottum up, empowered to lead by the supporters, a reciprocity.
As opposed to a cult, which is entirely focused on the leader. Sub-leaders are judged by fealty to the leader and embodiment of the leader’s ideals. Top down.
The best leaders empower and bring out the best of their supporters. I see that in Joe. But even better, I see it in Kamala too.

480 Justices would definitely be interesting.
Someone made a good argument on MSNBC for having a large number of judges on the SC and drawing from the pool for each case. No one would know the makeup of the court for their particular case, so there would be fewer cases that are pushed to the court in order to get a desired outcome. The court wouldn’t be so incredibly dependent on the health of any given judge. He made a good case for changing the court drastically.
If the Supreme Court believed Black people and women people were… people, I wouldn’t support court packing.

Not sure they could get past Meadows, Cruz and pence’s heads.
Hearing from some Trumper relatives in the last week. They’re freaked out, because their godlike hero is babbling “like a crackhead” and meanwhile, they keep seeing their economic situation crumble.
“It’s like he don’t care about us, and it was all just lies!” they whine.
There are a lot of Rust Belt blue-collar workers who are waking up to the fact that Trump’s idiotic trade war & tariffs have destroyed their lives. I paged this today:
Is it a collapse? All Trump critics and opponents are traumatized people, scarred by the horror of November 2016. But vigilance shouldn’t mean being afraid of our shadows. The average of national polls shows something approaching a collapse in the President’s standing over the last three weeks and especially over the last week. On September 19th, the FiveThirtyEight composite average gave Joe Biden a 6.6 percentage point lead over President Trump. By October 1st that number had swelled to 8.2 percentage points. Today it is 10.1 percentage points. These may not seem like big numbers. But in a race that has been on in earnest for a year and in an era of fierce and largely stable polarization it is a deep deterioration.Given the momentous events of the last ten days - the debate debacle followed by the President’s COVID diagnosis and his erratic behavior since returning to the White House - it’s been quite difficult to get a firm read of the polls.
Since returning to the White House? More like since the day he was born!

Crazy Nancy Pelosi is looking at the 25th Amendment in order to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris. The Dems want that to happen fast because Sleepy Joe is out of it!!!
We really need to ask the question and not just rhetorically or snarkily: What sort of drugs is he on?
Biden has made it clear that he is only going to serve on Term, the long-term plan is to have Harris replace him. I could dig that…

Is that tweet even real?
While recounting the latest WH insanity this morning, my wife asked the (obviously rhetorical) question: didn’t Trump ever take a Civics course in college?
To which my immediate response was that not only did Trump not take any Civics courses, but the guy he paid to take his tests probably didn’t, either….

“It’s like he don’t care about us, and it was all just lies!” they whine.
Yah think?
Honestly, having an independent commission with the power to invoke Section 4 of the 25th Amendment probably makes sense. Though, there are some potential hang ups.
Section 4 is really about the Wilson Scenario where the president has had a stroke or is in a coma and can’t really respond to the VP stepping up. In a scenario like we have now, the mechanisms in Section 4 are just asking for a constitutional crisis (if Pence and the cabinet could get the votes, Trump could dispute it, requiring a second vote (and assuming Trump doesn’t fire his entire cabinet before they take the second vote), and then it gets thrown to Congress).
So an independent commission is useful in our current state of affairs - but then there are issues of how they are appointed, whether they serve at the pleasure of the president, whether it’s a standing commission or some sort of specially called for commission (and who has the power to call them). Then there’s the issue of whether they’d have subpoena power or could somehow force the president to stand for an examination.
I’d suggest something like this - the VP, Speaker, or President Pro Tem of the Senate could have the power to call the commission to review the president’s condition. But, have the commission made up of the CJ of the Supreme Court and the Chief Judge of each of the Circuit Courts of Appeal - with subpoena power.

Catholic Priest Arrested After Having Sex on Church Altar with Two Dominatrices
Reverend Travis Clark, 37 of New Orleans was hosting an after-hours service that shocked parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church. The incident happened on September 30th when a witness, saw the lights on inside the church late at night and wanted to see what was happening. According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, Clark and two women had set up lighting and were recording their act on a cell phone camera. Clark was arrested for having sex in a public place and his cohorts, Mindy Dixon, 41, and Melissa Chang, 23 were also charged. Dixon, an adult film star, according to reports, posted on social media that she was heading to “defile a house of God” before her encounter with Reverend Clark. Clark also serves as a chaplain at a local Catholic high school. The Archdiocese of New Orleans said Clark has been suspended and Archbishop Greg Aymond performed a ritual cleansing of the altar.

you know, its the same old crap that I brought up at the beginning of the thread…
Dems must answer to calls of court packing….
Yet, to date, how many stories have been written about the GOP packing multiple levels of the judiciary with a great number of unqualified political appointments, some who have never set foot in a courtroom, much less as a judge. The fact that they denied filling positions when they were nominated by a Democratic administration, and their logic twisting argument for the highest court in the land, which is strangely malleable to suit their needs.
How many cycles are being spent on the current nominee, her position on everything from 2nd amendment interpretation to Roe vs. Wade… well what about labor rights? the ACA? environmental regulations? Native peoples? marijuana? white collar crime?
I wish Biden would turn those questions back on the Press… you want to deal in hypotheticals, based on an election that hasn’t happened yet and here you are ignoring what is going on RIGHT NOW?
When are you going to stop being a tool?

Well, I mean it’s Louisiana so they love to prosecute them some immorality. Also, I believe the Pastor may have hired these women to do this. Which would make it prostitution. Which I believe is illegal in Louisiana.
On a humorous note, one of the stories I read about this quoted a parishoner who was more upset about WHERE this happened than the fact that it happened.

I grew up being the centre of ridicule in school because I was saying and doing insensitive shit. Nobody knew about autism then. As a teenager I thought I was sociopathic because I never felt any real emotions, even when people died. Because I wanted to fit in, I spent most of my time copying how people interacted. I took responsibility for my own actions and my own emotions. I not only learned how to act empathetic, I developed real empathy. Trump’s parents took his autism and trained him to be a psychopath/sociopath.
If what I believe about him having autism is correct.
He may actually be psychopathic - he’s apparently charismatic, something I’ve never seen in autistics.

And a lot of people believed that shit too.

Right and I get equally pissed when people use the fact that Biden isn’t a fast speaker to make claims he’s got dementia. So much of online culture frustrates me because a lot of it is people speaking out of their ass on shit they don’t know a lot about.
Biden is a stutterer. He learned to focus differently to not stutter. Interrupting him changes his focus and makes it look like he’s having cognitive problems. They know that, but the unwashed mass of MAGAts don’t, which is what they’re relying on.

He really is just a giant Twitter troll when it comes down to it.

Yeeted from the church so hard he ends up in orbit?
I predict he will be a former man of the cloth soon. Not because of the act, but because of the appropriate ages of the others.

Yeah Christie planned to use that against him.
The old “someone hacked my twitter and sent that one tweet” story.
CSPAN is saying Steve Scully’s Twitter was hacked and that he never sent the tweet to Scaramucci.
This is not going to go well.
If he was indeed hacked, it should be very easy to prove. https://t.co/qVlou4mHt3— Yashar Ali 🐘 (@yashar) October 9, 2020

And now god is punishing christie. I don’t make the rules, I just really enjoy when they work out in my favor.

And just like before, learn nothing.
Republicans learn by doubling down and carving out more of the vitriolic base. The Cult of the White Man must be appeased at all costs.
After a defeat in a few weeks Republicans will pretend to “lick their wounds and re-strategize” but do nothing about changing their awful policies and awful worldview. They will go down in flames and follow their aging base to their graves. We are in for another 20 years of this shit- if the country can survive it.

Popping in to say that I hope everyone is hanging in there in these unsettling and trying times. I’m about a half-dozen threads behind and have missed the lizard commentariat. Over the past weeks, news has mostly been just headlines for me.
Politics aside, this past week was tough for me personally. Teddy dislocated his hip and they put a sling on it. During the follow-up visit on Wednesday, the surgeon recommended taking off the sling. She said the profession is divided on the benefits. So, they removed it and I got the call he was doing well and to come pick him up. By the time I got there and waited in the parking lot about 50 minutes, they called me to tell me that he popped the hip again and needed FHO surgery to fix it. He’s at the vet hospital now for the surgery. Teddy’s a trooper, but my nerves are frayed and my body is a bit sore carrying 40 lbs of dog up and down 3 flights of stairs a couple of times a day. He’ll be in the hospital overnight which gives me a mental break (constantly worrying if he’s in pain or will hurt himself more) as well as a day or so not to have to carry him up and down.
I’ve gotten behind in my online teaching so I’ll spend this afternoon catching up after taking a little break to do some housework this morning.
In case anyone’s interested, the lineup for tonight’s Boomers for Biden show—should be a fun way to spend happy hour.

Biden is against crabs, jousting, and a federal employees! A bad combination to be fighting against in the great state of Maryland!
